YMMV / Honkai Impact 3rd

Go To

  • Adorkable: While mostly serious, Sakura is not totally safe from messing up adorably, like when she made sushi by mistake when it was intended to be a rice ball.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
    • Is Rita's very noticeable crush on the Captain actually genuine, or simply a ploy to deceive him to her own ends? There is evidence for either as while she does act noticeably more flirty and servile when speaking with the Captain than she does with the Valkyries, she has deceived and manipulated the protagonists and Captain in service to Otto’s plans.
    • Does Mei actually reciprocate Kiana's feelings towards her, or does she simply view her as a close friend? As of right now, the game doesn't really offer a definite answer either way. Even her actions in Chapter 15 can be debated both ways — she's either a desperate would-be lover who has just realized her love might either be dead or she's going to be taken to a lab never to be seen again, or she's a remoseful senpai who is devastated over not being there for her kohai. Or somewhere between both. Chapters 16 and 17 slowly uncover Mei's side of the relationship, culminating in the "Lament of the Fallen" video where she makes it (violently) clear that Kiana is the most important person in her life.
  • Alternate Self Shipping: Some fanworks started shipping Seele with her other self (best known to fans as Veliona).
  • Badass Decay: Bronya and Mei suffered the worst from this. Both lose battles constantly. This changed for Mei from Chapter 17 and on, but Bronya continues to lose battles which makes it like this for her. In Chapter 22, Herrscher of Sentience mocks her for her losses despite having the power of Herrscher of Reason.
  • Best Known for the Fanservice:
    • It's a huge game with a wide breadth of gameplay, but it's mostly known for anime boobs and backless outfits. This is furthered by the fact that some ads for it are nothing but skimpily dressed women posing for 15 seconds before a logo comes up. It's also quite common to hear fans trying out the game after seeing some artworks of the HI3 girls, notably Kiana and her Herrscher of the Void persona.
    • Ever since her debut, the fanbase's first impression of Elysia focused more on her attractive design and Fanservice appeal, to the point where the "SEGGS" meme became prevalent in the fandom because of her. This is intensified by her Battlesuit Trailer video wherein a Concept Artist of miHoYo mentioned "As for her clothes, we tightened them in some areas to show the curves of her thighs."
  • Bragging Rights Option: Using "F2P" characters/equipments to score high in the "Abyss" and Memorial Arena modes aren't unheard of, in large part because not everyone would get lucky enough in the gacha to get the high tier characters/equipments. But let's face it, you're definitely flexing when you use the base-B-rank Valkyries as your main attacker, like White Comet (Kiana), to get some decent scores. Granted, you would still need some good equipments (particularly the Dirac stigmata set) and supports for her, but watching her defeating the likes of Jizo Mitama and Tonatiuh is a spectacle of its own.
  • Broken Base:
    • The game being censored, namely the removal of the ability to touch the Valkyries on the main menu on the CN, KR and Global version has been a rather contentious issues within the game’s fanbase. Some people don’t mind not having the feature, while others swear off playing the Global version because of its removal.
    • About whether a certain "dead" character (Himeko) is truly dead or not, and whether bringing her back to the story is a good thing or not. One side wants her to come back; the way she appeared later as "cameo" in ch. 11-EX and 14 as an "image" in Kiana's mind brought much hype to her fans. The other side feels that she shouldn't come back because her "death" was the catalyst of Kiana's growth, and thus her death has a big meaning that her "return" would've made that meaning lose its weight. Much later, it is confirmed that Himeko is truly dead, but her "memories" returned once more in the story in order to give Kiana a much-needed resolve to keep going and gain enough will to turn the tides against the Herrscher of Domination before vanishing for good, and later our heroes gave her a more proper sendoff, leaving the fanbase in peace about her fate.
  • Cargo Ship: There's a meme trend which ships the A Post-Honkai Odyssey protagonist with money or paychecks. This stems from fans joking that he doesn't have any official romantic partner or significant other, so the thing that likely motivates him during missions is the fact that he's getting paid.
  • Common Knowledge:
    • There's a male avatar called the Captain who exists in the main story. This isn't true because unlike other Gacha Games, the main character is Kiana Kaslana. The Captain only exists in the limited-time events.
    • Although minor, some official translations are often misremembered. For instance, the series of open world maps taking place after the Time Skip are collectively called the "A Post-Honkai Odyssey" maps/modes, or "APHO" for short. However, many fans just remember them as "Post-Honkai Odyssey" or "PHO"; the article "A" is forgotten. This is mostly attributed to fans being aware of the common fan translations first, especially since the English versions of the game are behind the schedule of the China version when it comes to game updates and releases.
  • Complacent Gaming Syndrome:
    • The Infinity Abyss mode was practically dominated by Herrscher of the Void and Celestial Hymn, with a rotating third, due to them being a physical damage monster and the prime physical defense-debuffer support respectively. The introduction of Dirac Sea mode (an alternative to Infinity Abyss, which incorporates Weather of War) and, later, the Q-Singularis mode (which replaces the Abyss entirely) was an attempt to curb the complacency; now the two aren't always the best option while other battlesuits can get more screentime (although HOTV is still high tier in that regard). However, the introduction of Herrscher of Reason introduces a new syndrome of complacency, with this character being so powerful that a player with this character and her full set can basically ignore said Weather of War system with the exception of a weather which disfavors ice damage.
    • Carole's "uppercut cancel" exploit in Post-Honkai Odyssey, mixed with her ultimates, made her such a juggernaut that many top players would manage big scores in the Ruins by using only her, completely disregarding the dynamic character switch mechanics that the gameplay normally relies on. She broke the competitive balance so much that miHoYo had to fix the glitch in Version 4.0.
  • Continuity Lock-Out:
    • Events involving the Captain have their own continuity and will often reference the plot of previous events. The problem is that events go away after they end and can't be revisited unless they're specifically brought back, such as was done for "The Day You Vanished with the Stars" and "Rosemary's Floriograph", which means new players will often end up extremely confused at some developments that call back to old events.
    • Though they are not directly related, the initial chapters of Honkai Impact 3rd assume that players are familiar with Guns GirlZ setting and characters, leaving many new players wondering what's going on and what the characters are even talking about. This is somewhat rectified through the use of events and suplementary comics exploring important events and characters, with later story chapters also trying to explain things more clearly for those who were unable to play Guns GirlZ while the servers were up.
    • As Honkai Impact 3rd became older and received continuous updates or spin-offs, the lore became inevitably thicker and convoluted. Fortunately, miHoYo is aware of the possibility for Honkai newcomers to become confused if they haven't been up-to-date with everything; the official YouTube channel of the game uploads a series of "Honkai Chronicles" videos which aim to sufficiently summarize or condense the lore to make it easily understandable, though these tend to be a mix of Previously on… storytelling and character-specific lore, such as the "Herrscher of Reason" video which summarizes how the title got passed along from Welt Joyce, to Welt Yang, then to Bronya Zaychik.
  • Crazy Is Cool: This fits the Herrscher of Sentience perfectly. She's almost maniacal in her quest to end her Honkai, and she is the exact opposite of the usually calm Fu Hua, so many players like her for her unique attitude.
  • Creator's Pet: A good number of fans felt that Durandal was "overrated". Storywise she's seen as the best Valkyrie that Schicksal has, she's so immensely powerful that only Herrschers could rival her, and she has never suffered or lost her cool too much unlike the main characters. Gameplay-wise, her two S-rank battlesuits are considered very strong - and while miHoYo tends to create environments that favor the characters they want to "sell" so that they can be sold better, for Dea Anchora it comes off as too blatant: The "Rimestar" boss gets introduced in the "Abyss" modes and Memorial Arena as a PSY-type boss who's Weak to Fire. Dea Anchora is BIO-type, which counters PSY, and is fire-elemental; the only other suit of this property is Flame Sakitama (Sakura) and as an A-rank suit, she's much harder to work with. The fans felt that she's pushed too much for someone whose characteristic is widely seen as "uninteresting" at best; she doesn't have enough depth or development compared to the other playable characters (especially the "main" ones), even compared to her own subordinate Rita. Most of her depth comes from the Durandal visual novel, which is only available in Chinese and Japanese and isn't easily accessible to fans of other languages. miHoYo tried to bring out some of the novel's story in one of the web events prior to Version 4.4 to make fans understand a part of her backstory better, but it still left many people waiting and demanding for her true Character Development.
    • The events of the Kolosten Arc didn't do much to help her reputation, both gameplay wise and storywise. Not only is her latest battlesuit, Palatinus Equinox, an IMG-type (the only other one besides Raven at that point in time), but miHoYo would add another IMG-type boss to the Abyss modes and Memorial Arena shortly after her debut, essentially repeating what had occurred with Dea Anchora and the "Rimestar". Storywise, The Reveal of her true heritage only split the base further, with quite a few fans complaining that the twist only served to undermine Kiana's Character Development. Her subsequent power-up didn't help matters, as critics pointed out that it made her more powerful without putting her through the same ordeal that Kiana, Bronya, Mei, and some major characters had to be put through to earn their power.
  • Creator Worship: The miHoYo fans who have been sticking with the company way back its early days adore one of its founders, Forrest Wei Liu, for his openness in admitting that he loves anime and video games, like an otaku sticking with the company's tagline of "Tech Otakus Save The World". He also participated in some social media interactions, interviews, or has appeared as himself in some of their game's promos and ads, thus the fans saw him as a casual or relaxed person. The miHoYo fanbase has since called him "Da Wei" (大伟哥), or "Brother Wei", even up to Honkai Impact 3rd.
  • Cry for the Devil: Otto is made pitiable in the Kolosten arc (Chapters 26 to 28). He's revealed to be friendless in his past and unable to move on from his guilt which leads him unable to form meaningful connections in present, which makes his sacrifice sadder during "Thus Spoke Apocalypse".
  • Demonic Spiders:
    • Back in the Infinity Abyss days, the "scythe zombie" Elite Mooks were this. Their attacks not only deal substantial damage, they will bleed your character. However, they're also among the few mooks whose attacks can hit other mooks, and for good damage, too; using them to soften other mooks were a common tactic back then.
    • The "dual swords zombie" Elite Mook can evade your ranged attacks easily and has a quick, hard-to-react-to lunging slash attack. Not only that, if you try evading her normal melee attacks (the Three-Strike Combo), it won't trigger the Ultimate Evasion's main effect (although it can still trigger the side effects, if there are any). The only safe way of attacking her is by melee attacks.
    • The "crab Honkai Beasts" introduced in ch. 10 have heightened defenses thanks to their thick pincers. Unlike most other Shield Bearing Mooks, however, it's hard to actually go behind them; they basically know your tactic and thus their default movement is to strafe around you. Their attacks are fairly powerful, as well. Your best hope is to attack them with elemental attacks. Its Quantum version in ch. 11 onward, predictably, is even worse.
    • The "spider mecha" mooks will try to swarm you and then explode in your face, dealing high damage. Using melee-oriented Valkyries against them is risky.
    • The stronger Elite Mook version of the "cyborg zombie" mooks acts just like the normal versions at first... until it Turns Red, after which you can't turn it into a sitting duck "zombie" anymore (i.e it stays as a "Mecha" type). More importantly, it gains an AOE attack that deals multiple hits and does quite a lot of damage if you don't escape in time. Fortunately, it doesn't use its frontal shields anymore.
    • The "Honkai Emperor" Elite Mook is normally not much of a tricky enemy, but in Dirac Sea, if you encounter it as a "solo warrior", prepare for trouble as a "solo warrior's" attacks, if they damage you, will put you in a "tainted" state where your whole team's SP gets drained slowly and your attacks become weaker. This trait is already troublesome enough, but for most enemies it's possible to not let them attack as much as possible. For Emperor? Tough luck, as one of its attacks has it summon pink spikes that repeatedly tracks your position. Get hit once and you get tainted. Yamabuki Armor's Deflector Shield can block its attacks, but it's easy to get careless if you keep attacking it while it's doing said move; get hit enough times and the shield will break.
    • Also in Dirac Sea, the "Duo Elites" cluster (especially on the last floor) tend to be many players' roadblock. They tend to be sheer damage sponges no matter the "disturbance level" the current given Dirac Sea run has. Even if you know to kill each of the pair of Elite Mooks in close timings of each other, you may not be able to kill all the pairs in time before the health drain goes max and finishes you off.
    • The Elite Mook Mecha "Cyclone" carries around huge gatling gun on its shoulders, going into a mode where it becomes a turret whose tracking is just barely slower than your characters. Meaning once it goes in this mode, you need to haul it otherwise you'll be caught in a blaze of fire that'll most certainly wipe out any Valk even at full health. Worse yet, it has a Turns Red mode where it can't be interrupted or stunned, meaning it'll also just shoot a barrage of bullets whenever it feels like.
  • Difficulty Spike:
    • Chapter 4 is where things start to generally become harder, especially if you're trying to get the levels' medals.
    • Leveling up to 56, 70, and 81 raises the difficulty of Q-Singularis, Dirac Sea, and Memorial Arena.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • For a Posthumous Character with little screentime, Cecilia Schariac is quite popular, especially among fan artists. It helps that she's a beautiful and loving mother towards Kiana.
    • While Benares is already one of the more prominent Honkai Beasts of the game, her appearance as "Bella" only showed up in the Second Eruption comic. Despite that, she is rather popular with the fans, with multiple fan arts depicting her with Sirin, and many wanted her to make an appearance in the game proper. Sure enough, she finally appears in ch. 17 around the time of Benares' death, and Version 4.1 depicts her in the Benares: Awakening stigmata set, as well as turning her into an ELF.
    • Raven was a rather minor character initially, but her interactions with Mei, her soft spot for children, her heartbreaking backstory and generally fun personality (among… other things) made her a very popular character, to the point she won the "Idol Contest" event by a landslide (beating Ai-chan and Tesla) in all servers and eventually became playable in Version 5.2.
    • Susannah was a background character who only appeared in one comic and a small event in version 4.4, but her co-starring in an event with Li Sushang made her popularity skyrocket. Her shy and awkward but earnest and enthusiastic personality (and a healthy amount of Ship Tease with Sushang) quickly endeared her to the fandom to the point she became the first playable character released after the end of Part 1. The belly dancer design of her battlesuit only helped.
  • Epileptic Trees: Ever since "A Post-Honkai Odyssey" was released, a popular fan theory claims that Kiana is heavily implied to have sealed herself into the moon alongside 99% of the Honkai energy during the Time Skip. Aside from the fact that she has yet to appear in the "APHO" storyline, long-time miHoYo fans suggest that it all serves as a reference to the company's first game, Fly Me 2 The Moon (where the magical girl she's based from simply wants to fly to the moon). Others believe that it's a culmination of her heavy association with the moon, while a line from the "Moon Halo" theme song ("Turned into the moon that always tells the warmth and brightness of the sun") is treated as a Foreshadowing of this event. On the other hand, Kiana's fate is also foreshadowed at the end of Mei's Herrscher of Thunder tutorial video, where Kevin says that while Mei's decisiveness is most admirable, he wonders what choice Mei will make then if she finds out that even a sacrifice so dear couldn't reverse the ill fate of her "knight". Many players interpret his statement like this: no matter how hard Mei tries to keep Kiana safe from any danger, and even with all the assistance she provides to her like she did in the "Remaining Flames" and "Thus Spoke Apocalypse" arcs, little did Mei know that she is only delaying Kiana's inevitable fate, which leads to the possibility that Mei and Kiana will never see each other again despite the fact that the former is still waiting for her homecoming, along with her realization that the past choices she made back in Chapter 17 cost her precious time with Kiana; these regrets she will have to carry over for the rest of her life, which is shown in one of the conversation events with her in APHO Chapter 1 titled "Mei: Precious Memories".note
  • Estrogen Brigade: Despite having a lot of female playable characters, the game still managed to have a female fanbase because of its attractive male NPC characters such as Kevin Kaslana, Siegfried Kaslana, Otto Apocalypse, and Welt Yang. It was even more apparent with the arrival of the "A Post-Honkai Odyssey" chapters and "Elysian Realm" modes since they've brought a lot of Ho Yay implications and popular male-to-male pairings such as "Adam x Lyle" and "Kevin x Su".
  • Evil Is Cool:
    • The imposing and theatrical Herrscher of the Void is easily the most pivotal villain in the game by virtue of being the main character herself discovering the truth of her origins in the worst way possible and her darker self taking over, subsequently reveling in the devastation she causes. She's also a very powerful villain and playable character who can manipulate space to her whims, allowing her to cause mass destruction. Comparisons with her Badass Fingersnap to Thanos' are not lost on the audience, either.
    • The Herrscher of Sentience aka Fu Hua's awakened Shadow Knight is further proof that the Honkai get all the good shit. A Whip Sword that can cover the entire battlefield, a BFS that can double as a goddamn Hover Board, and a sickening Grin of Audacity, all add flair to one of the most interesting villains and a very powerful playable character.
  • Fandom-Enraging Misconception: Saying that this game is made by a Japanese company, when in fact, miHoYo is a Chinese company. This misconception is mostly seen after Genshin Impact became popular in 2020 since that game attracted new fans who never heard of miHoYo before, and mistook both Honkai and Genshin as Japanese-made games just because they have a similar Animesque art style.
  • Fandom Rivalry: When Punishing: Gray Raven came out, it was compared a lot to Honkai Impact 3rd because both games are Chinese 3D Action RPG titles. The rivalry happened when PG:R was thought to be a strong competitor in the genre that HI3 is popular in but with better visuals and interface. Meanwhile, fans of the latter claim that PG:R is just following the trend that HI3 had.
  • Fanon: The original ending of Gun GirlZ involves God Kiana killing the entire cast then executing a Cosmic Retcon. One popular Arc Welding fan theory is that said Cosmic Retcon created the Honkai Impact 3rd Alternate Universe.
  • Fanfic Fuel: The 8-year Time Skip that happens between the main game's storyline and the Post-Honkai Odyssey content is open to a lot of theorycrafting, speculations and questions. What exactly happened in those 8 years? What happened to the rest of the cast such as Kiana and Bronya? Further explanation with spoilers
  • Faux Symbolism:
    • "Stigmata" is also a term for scars/wounds that are similar in placement to those of Jesus Christ when he was crucified. A study showed that 80% of "stigmatists" (people who have stigmata) are women, which is (partly) the reason for this game's World of Action Girls. Here, Stigmata are Power Tattoos that draw upon the power of legendary figures through the (either natural or artificial) genetic information that cause the tattoos to appear. It helps that Schicksal (a religious organization) was the first to discover this phenomenon (at least, the first among the present civilization), and created "artificial Stigmata" in order to empower their Valkyries.
    • Siegfried is called "lone warrior" in his Stigmata set's Flavor Text. It's a reference to the einherjar (meaning "lone warrior"), Nordic warriors who died in battle and had their souls brought to Valhalla by the Valkryies. In particular, the story of how he ended up marrying Cecilia is almost a mirror to the story of Ring of the Nibelung, where the valkyrie Brynhildr fell in love for the hero Sigurd (of which "Siegfried" is a derivative name/character in the German adaptation of the story, Nibelungenlied).
    • The Herrscher of Thunder has a dragon named "Kurikara", her signature weapon is named "Key of Castigation", and one of her quotes is "the thunder shall purge all of your sins". They're loose allusions to Acala (aka Fudou Myouou), a high deity in Japanese Buddhism.
  • Fountain of Memes: The Protagonist of "A Post-Honkai Odyssey" (sometimes called "Adam") is a meme machine ever since his debut. Most of his dialogue options are selected by the player, so he's treated as a self-insert character whose personality can be determined by the fandom. In memes, he's either a harem protagonist, a Chaste Hero, someone obsessed with money, a "Giga Chad", a Covert Pervert, or a combination of these.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • With the other games made by miHoYo such as Fly Me 2 The Moon, Zombiegal Kawaii, Gun Girls Z, Genshin Impact and Tears of Themis.
    • With the Devil May Cry fandom, especially when it's found out that HI3 makes references to the DMC characters' movesets, and when miHoYo's co-founder confirmed the DMC games as gameplay inspirations for HI3. This shared playerbase is also the reason why the "A Post-Honkai Odyssey" mode, with its more DMC-esque jumping and enhanced air-to-air mechanics compared to the normal game, gets called "Honkai May Cry".
    • With Neon Genesis Evangelion fans, as there are HI3 players who noticed a lot of clear references and similarities to Eva (as detailed in the game's Shout-Out page). It got to the point where these players speculate the game itself being a homage to the Eva franchise, or that the writers and designers in miHoYo are also fans of that series. The overlapping fans eventually reached their glorious moment when the Version 4.5 update of Honkai Impact 3rd officially featured a crossover collaboration event with Evangelion, complete with a playable Asuka, and some Eva-themed event story, Stigmata, Weapon, and alternate outfits.
    • There's an overlapping playerbase with the Arknights fandom. Specifically, there are gamers who wanted to play a side game along with Arknights as their main game, and they ended up as HI3 fans as well. Vice-versa, others simply wanted to have another game to play while waiting for their Energy/Stamina resource to replenish here (Arknights' has a Sanity equivalent for it), which helps ease and shift away attention from the grind of either game. The shared fanbase has also cited the similar futuristic aesthetic and similar story themes of the games (e.g. the world being overrun with a fictional disease, with various factions dealing with it) as the reason why they still play both.
  • Gateway Series: For mobile gamers, Honkai Impact 3rd became the gateway title for 3D real-time Action RPG mobile games/gacha games, especially during the years when the gacha game market in Asia was still mostly known for being 2D-based and/or having Turn-Based RPG as their primary gameplay loop. As a result, newer 3D Action RPG gacha games tend to be compared to this game.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: In its native China, HI3 does well for itself, but it always faces a decent bit of competition and simple market density (alongside occasional challenges concerning its content) and it can go a bit all over the place in the rankings. In most other regions, while the game's well-received enough, it still faces struggles against many competitorsnote . It is in Southeast Asia where HI3 is one of the rulers of the roost. In SEA, HI3 is an absolute market mainstay, especially in the Android market (which is far larger there than Apple markets, thanks to devices being more widely available and less expensive)note . Part of this is simply down to language — thanks to the early popularity of the game in SE Asia (where it first launched with merely an English option), miHoYo commissioned, and now maintains, localizations of HI3 into Viet, Thai and Bahasa Indonesia. That HI3 not only got localized into these often-passed-over languages at all, but maintains its localization on pace with content updates, has won over a huge portion of the region's mobile gamers (and you are very likely, when searching social messaging services like Twitter, to encounter a lot of discussion of the game in Indonesian or Vietnamese). Thanks to these localization decisions, and the fact that so few titles really try to put in the same effort to be as accessible, HI3's strongest, most consistent non-domestic market is likely to remain SE Asia for a long time to come.
  • Goddamned Boss: Certain bosses have overbearing gimmicks that force you to build your team and strategy around it. If you can get them right, however, you can trivialize the challenge.
    • RPC-6626 proves to be an annoying opponent if beefed-up and/or fought on timed battles as this boss keeps distance, has hard to dodge homing missiles and lightning burst that paralyze you if you're hit, and when it goes midair, it is almost unreachable by anything your Valkyries can throw. It, however, has lower health than most other bosses to compensate; with a well-built PSY team, it can go down relatively quickly.
    • Jizo Mitama has a fixed pattern: it goes to its second phase when its 1st health bar is nearly depleted, then enters 3rd phase with depletion of its 2nd health bar, and 4th phase with the depletion of its 3rd health bar. The 2nd phase opens with it causing multiple explosions that track your position and leave Mana Burning patches on their wake, and then it becomes covered with a Deflector Shield that reduces any attack to 1 until you break it, where the boss becomes open to attacks. The real kicker, however, is its 3rd phasenote . Many strategy guides will try to give the players a way to avoid the 3rd phase, by dealing enough damage to it during its "large explosion" attack so that, when its HP reaches the last bar after that, it'll skip the 3rd phase and start the 4th. Oh, and by the way, it also heavily resists elemental damage.
    • The Shadow Knight (Fu Hua) boss has attacks that deal substantial damage, and she has a passive skill that lets her resist elemental damage. The unique thing about her is that she's one of the few bosses that can be launched up and juggled akin to a mook after her Armor Meter is broken, and while being juggled, her Armor Meter regeneration is delayed; you're going to need it because she has loads of HP and thus building a "shieldbreaker" team is a good way to beat her. The catch, however, is if she uses one of her skills that gives her a highly increased defense, making you deal only around 3-digit damage on her on average. This defensive buff can be dispelled by evading her attacks 3 times, but you have to be careful to not break her Armor Meter before you can dispel this buff, as the buff will make your attacks far less powerful even if you can juggle her, and more importantly, you have to wait until she regenerates it so she can attack again (and you can evade her).
    • The Deathly Doom boss in Memorial Arena can turn intangible to avoid your attacks, and she can attack by deploying "glowing towers" that act like turrets; you have to hit them a lot to destroy them. She's one of the few bosses that are vulnerable to freezing, paralysis and stun, and if her shield is broken, she can't turn intangible. The real "fun", however, is in the second phase: after you deplete her health bar, 3 copies of her appear. They may only have a single health bar each, but they're spread far apart and each of them can create their own glowing towers; the arena is going to be filled by dangers if you let them. If you want to end this phase quickly, you have to have a Valkyrie who can gather enemies around so that you can beat all of them at once.
    • Code XXI−The World, in Post-Honkai Odyssey, seems carefully designed to be as infuriating to fight as possible. It frequently creates shielded drones that cause an Interface Screw if you don't destroy them and will attack you while you're busy with said drones. It will occasionally send a gust of wind that blows you out of the arena into the Bottomless Pit if you're not careful. You have to break the armors on its four legs while dodging its constant barrage of attacks, and depleting its health takes quite a while. Oh, and the skill level recommended to fight it is 50, well above most players' level at the point it is introduced, which means it requires either a lengthy period of level-grinding, a heavy use of resurrection syringes or a lot of patience to be defeated the first time. The cherry on the cake is that you have to go through an unskippable cutscene before each try. With that said, it is still a big, slow target and his attack patterns aren't too hard to figure out if you're observant.
    • Huodou is tanky enough that one might not be able to deplete the health of both its forms before you run out of time. What raises it from a mere Damage-Sponge Boss to this, though, is that on entering its second form, it goes into a burning state with high damage reduction. If not disabled by filling a Rime Trauma gauge with ice damage, it will follow up with a powerful, hard-to-dodge multihit attack. It can do this multiple times.
  • Good Bad Bugs:
    • In the older days, there was a bug where, if Yamabuki Armor (Bronya) keeps using her laser when she activates her Ultimate Skill, she'll keep shooting without overheating the laser. While her SP will slowly deplete, the constant laser attack will fill her SP gauge; if she can hit a number of enemies at once with the laser, she can fill faster than the gauge can deplete. This was eventually patched out.
    • In Q-Singularis, it was possible to dodge each "quantum circle" twice in a row, allowing the players to fill the special skill gauge quickly from zero to full. This was so good of an exploit that in Version 3.6, the CN server closed Q-singularis for a while to fix it, so that only Dirac Sea was available. When 3.6 hit the other servers, the fix was already in place.
    • In the Open World stages, sometimes a lag may cause your character to fail to follow the terrain when they run down slopes. This will cause them to run in midair, which fans quickly turned into a gag. This is also referenced in the gag 4-koma.
    • In the events where "chibi lobby" is featured, glitching the chibi commands may cause the chibi to "jump" on top of the tall models, from poles to rooftops.
    • There's a glitch that allows you to play as Post-Honkai Odyssey characters in the normal story stages. The game may crash when you try to quit after that, however, so miHoYo strongly advised against using it until it was fixed.
    • In Post-Honkai Odyssey, those who are familiar with Distorted Real Impact would find something similar in Carole's "uppercut switch" glitch: When she performed her fully-charged Shoryuken, if you pressed both the attack button and either one of your partner buttons right when the first hit connected, it'd glitch the attack's hitbox, causing the uppercut to hit more times than intended and inflict double or triple the damage. This is largely how the top players in Ruins mode got their big scores before the bug was fixed.
    • In Post-Honkai Odyssey 2, it’s possible to explore a lot more of the map than initially planned by using a variety of jump tricks and cancels.
  • Good Bad Translation: Early in the game's life, the translation was... spotty, to say the least, partly owing to MiHoYo's significantly smaller team at the time, but one dubious translation quirk that has fondly stayed with long-time fans was the translation of Bronya's emotionally-detached Third-Person Person in dialogue as "The Bronya," even after they refined the game's English translation going forward.
Bronya (to Kiana): The Bronya is not a baby.
Bronya: The Bronya now owns MiHoYo.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • The dorm interaction between Mei and Herrscher of the Void has the former remark that Kiana is in her rebellious phase and the latter replying that "I hate the way you look at me! I'm not a problem child". Come "Lament of the Fallen" and the revelation of how far Mei is willing to go to deal with said "problem child", it's not so cute anymore.
    • In the Previous Era, that era's version of Himeko became the Herrscher of Flame, who turned Australia into a charred wasteland in a couple of hours. In late 2019, Australia suffered extensive wildfires that killed millions of animals and devastated large areas of the continent's bushlands.
  • He's Just Hiding: Some fans believe Himeko isn't dead after her final battle with Herrscher of the Void as her body was never found after that. Never mind that she was seen succumbing to both her wounds and Honkai energy in the end, and is implied to be falling from the sky afterward. It's eventually revealed by real Fu Hua in Chapter 20 that Himeko was missing in the Imaginary Space and hasn't been heard from since, leading to more speculation about her fate. Sadly, Chapter 25 fully confirmed that Himeko is gone for good, only her lingering consciousness remains inside the Gem of Haste and said consciousness eventually disappeared after the chapter ends.
  • High-Tier Scrappy:
    • A lot of players disliked Herrscher of Thunder for her ability to steamroll most bosses and levels effortlessly (with her full equipment at least) and supposedly ruining the competitive balance. It came from how she could work in environments, and/or against enemies, that didn't particularly favor her (such as against a PSY or attribute-less enemy, or in environments that don't strengthen PSY characters or lightning attacks) and could still score relatively high compared to characters that the particular stage favored.
    • Dea Anchora was hated for similar reasons, utterly outperforming every other fire valkyrie and making any fire-vulnerable boss a breeze without much effort, but with the added grief of being released as the same time as Herrscher of the Rimestar, a psy-type ice boss that "coincidentally" was a perfect match for DA. This was seen as an overly blatant attempt to force DA into the meta by fans; it doesn't help that Durandal isn't a particularly popular character to begin with.
  • Idiosyncratic Ship Naming: What does one call the ship of Durandal (Bianka Ataegina) and Rita Rossweisse? Durarita? Durita? Bianrita?
  • It Was His Sled: Himeko's death is very well-known plot of the game.
  • Launcher of a Thousand Ships:
    • Raiden Mei. Due to their interactions in the main story, she has been shipped a lot with Kiana Kaslana and Raven, with Kevin Kaslana being another option (since she looks exactly like his deceased love, Dr. MEI). Eventually, fanworks also started pairing her with Fu Hua. However, this trope has been in full force ever since her appearance in the "A Post-Honkai Odyssey" and "Elysian Realm" modes, which has extended her ships to include Bronya, "Adam" (the protagonist of "APHO"), Elysia, Mobius, and Aponia. It's also getting to the point where fans joke that the entire Flame-Chaser sims in the Elysian Realm are Raiden Mei's "harem".
    • The Protagonist of "A Post-Honkai Odyssey" is the first male playable character in this game which consists of many female characters. Because his earliest memes compare him to a typical harem anime protagonist, he's shipped with all of his fellow "APHO" teammates (Mei, Carole, Timido, Bronya, and Lyle). He's also been paired with Theresa just as she became the Overseer of Schicksal in the Time Skip.
  • Les Yay: It's expected when just about everyone in the cast are women, with several of them being romantically interested in the other. The examples are plenty enough to warrant a separate page.
  • LGBT Fanbase: Stemming from the above, combined with the game's story giving much attention to the relationship between the girls and the recurring themes of love, the game has quite the dedicated lesbian fanbase. It helps that a lack of contemporary male characters to ship the main cast with prevents the friction of Ship-to-Ship Combat its successor encounters.
  • Love to Hate: Otto garners such a reaction from fans since he's the root of most of the problems in the story, but causes them in such a masterfully controlled manner that people can't help but marvel in awe at his bastardry. Being voiced in Japanese by Akira Ishida, someone who's known for voicing attractive but manipulative assholes, helps in this respect.
  • Low-Tier Letdown:
    • The B-ranked battle suits (with the exception of Valkyrie Chariot) are generally seen as useless for any sort of end-game content. While they can get the player through any story content just fine, they're just too lacking in DPS or support capabilities to be of much help in Abyss or Memorial Arena, even with gacha gear. Though this is likely intentional, as they are the starting Valkyries, with players being intended to move on to more powerful Valkyries as they progress through the game.
    • Kallen's Sundenjaeger battlesuit is generally regarded as one of the weakest in the game. While she isn't a bad Valkyrie in and of herself, she's just too awkward to build many viable teams with her, due to the fact that she only has subpar support skills and DPS abilities. Her playstyle of sustained DPS on the field also doesn't fit well within the "burst damage" meta of the game, where Valkyries are rapidly switched in and out to gather/apply debuffs, use party buffs, use QTEs, and inflict huge bursts of damage. However, with the introduction of Starlit Astrologos and her ability to support even while off the field, Sudenjaeger has been buffed quite a bit, with it finally being possible to build teams around her, although it is doubtful she will ever be considered a meta Valkyrie.
    • Bronya's Dimension Breaker battlesuit, despite being S-rank, is considered the one Bronya battlesuit that doesn't have a single useful ability in the current metanote . Her DPS potential is nonexistent and her main support abilities consist in inflicting the "time lock" debuff on enemies, which most bosses are immune to anyway. Even her leader skills (accelerating SP regeneration and buffing the total damage of all-mech teams) are better handled by more polyvalent Valkyries or equipment. As such, most players see her as the one S battlesuit you don't want to get in the dorm supply.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Otto Apocalypse's centuries-long wish to undo the mistake that cost Kallen Kaslana's life is the catalyst for the evil deeds he commits throughout the main timeline. The charismatic and intelligent Schicksal Overseer prolongs humanity's war against the Honkai in order to draw out the source of their power that may provide him with the key to bringing back Kallen. Otto deceives and manipulates anyone he deems useful to him, even those he grows to genuinely care like Fu Hua, Theresa and Durandal. His machinations eventually turn allies against him and cause countless tragedies, up to the sacrifices and revelations that shape Kiana Kaslana into a true savior. Upon realizing that the world won't truly let him resurrect Kallen, Otto plans to use the Imaginary Tree to seemingly reset the timeline back to how it was before Kallen's death. When Kiana and Durandal confront and defeat him, Otto reveals that the battle allowed him to harness the power of their emotions so he can freely influence the Imaginary Tree and enact his true plan: to create a separate timeline in which Kallen will live. Otto then sacrifices his entire existence for it, content that this new timeline is untouched by his mistake.
  • Memetic Loser: Despite being one of the main characters, Kiana's crush and a powerful Valkyrie in her own right, Mei's tendency to fall Out of Focus as well as her... less-than-stellar track record when she did appearnote  made her the butt of many fans' jokes. It doesn't help that at least two of her four battlesuits (Crimson Impulse and Shadow Dash) were considered among the weakest in the game. Chapter 16 finally gave her some decent focus, however, and Chapter 17 introduced her Herrscher form in her full glory.
  • Moe:
    • Bronya and Theresa are considered the cutest out of all the Valkyries, by most people (in Theresa's case, that includes herself). Seele also is largely seen as the "cute younger sister figure" that inspires protective feelings in many fans.
    • And then comes E.L.F. (Equipment: Living Form), with their size being that of a 3 year old child, can you describe their cuteness?
    • Griseo is so innocent and adorable that even Möbius feels protective of her. Everything from her visual style to her animations (such as her dodge being a little hop with paint splashing at her feet) only adds to it. Her event in version 5.8 enhances the cuteness by telling the story in a style similar to a children’s picture book.
  • Never Live It Down: In the Azure Waters comic, Bronya is shown as licking Seele's tears off her face. Watching any reactor react to this scene shows how strange it was to some.
  • One True Threesome: Kiana and Mei are one of the most popular ships of the fandom, but with the release of the Herrscher of Sentience arc, Kiana and Fu Hua gained popularity due to their close interactions and Kiana's dedication to bringing her back home. So, shippers often resolve this conundrum by shipping the three together, which also works well due to Mei and Fu Hua's interactions in the Moon Shadow and Anti-Entropy Invasion comics.
  • Periphery Demographic: It's easy to realize that there is a dedicated part of the Honkai Impact fanbase that are also MikuMikuDance and 3D animation enthusiasts. As a proof, there's a ton of Honkai Impact MMD videos on YouTube and Bilibili.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name:
    • Kiana x Mei: Kiamei
    • Mei x Fu Hua: Meihua
    • Mei x Raven: Meiven
    • Bronya x Seele: Bronseele
    • Himeko x Fu Hua: Himehua
    • Kiana x Fu Hua: Fuki
    • Kiana x Fu Hua x Mei: Fukimei
    • Fu Hua x Herrscher of Sentience: Fufu
    • Durandal x Rita: Durarita
    • Elysia x Eden: Elyeden
    • Elysia x Mei: Elymei
    • Kevin x Su: Kevinsu
    • Adam x Lyle: Adamlyle
    • Li Sushang × Susannah: Sussus
  • Praising Shows You Don't Watch: When Genshin Impact became miHoYo's Breakthrough Hit since 2020, it also allowed new miHoYo fans to learn about Honkai Impact 3rd via online word-of-mouth, gaming articles detailing the prior game library of the company, recommended ads, or some Popcultural Osmosis. On video hosting sites like YouTube, there's a trend which involves new miHoYo fans reacting to just the fully animated cutscenes or trailers of HI3 even if they haven't played the game yet. They end up being amazed at what they're watching (specific points of praise mention the fight scenes and soundtrack) even if they admit not knowing much context or lore behind those scenes.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: As the story goes on character marches on, this is what happens to Otto. Initially, people disliked him or even hated him for his creepy obsession with Kallen, as depicted in the comics, and involving many of the main characters from the story in it. However, the story makes an effort to redeem him through retconning some of his actions. For example, in the comic, it's explicitly him who planned to release the Honkai beasts that resulted in Kallen's death, but in the main story, it's retconned as his sister influencing him. The entirety of chapters focusing on him like Chapter 26 to 28 are used to show his sympathetic backstory before he dies, and changing his motivation from resurrecting Kallen because of his love of her to resurrecting her because of the guilt he feels from indirectly causing her death. Nevertheless, some may not feel like he's been redeemed due to his past actions.
  • Sequel Displacement: As might be obvious from the title, yes, HI3 is the third game in the Honkai series. It was also, for many years, far and away the most successful and was the only one a large number of even dedicated fans had ever played (or had a chance to play). Honkai Gakuen 2/Guns GirlZ shut down its Global and South-East Asian servers in 2021note , and Zombiegal Kawaii/Honkai Gakuen 1 was made unavailable years prior, while HI3 became (as noted above) one of Asia's most successful mobile titles. It was only with the advent of Honkai: Star Rail that HI3, in turn, itself began to get eclipsed (especially where the anglosphere is concerned, as HI3 had never done nearly as well there as it had in Asia), and HSR itself still draws on HI3 most heavily for its series references.
  • Ship Mates: Kiana x Mei and Bronya x Seele are often this because of how they also follow the main story and don't conflict with each other.
  • She Really Can Act: Rie Kugimiya's performance as Kiana was generally contested by members of the fanbase, who felt that her performance did not evolve to match Kiana's Character Development. While many fans continue to express their preference for the CN voice-over, quite a few critics were won over by Kugimiya's performance in the Japanese dubs of "Shattered Samsara" and "Everlasting Flames" .
  • Shocking Moments: In the "Starfire Sonorant" online concert, miHoYo (through HOYO-MIX) plays live versions of their popular music, complete with vocals from the vocalized themes in the special short animations. They all bring nostalgia to the players who have gone through the story over the years, but it's otherwise nothing too surprising... up until, without warning, they showed trailers for a new chapter for the "A Post-Honkai Odyssey" mode, complete with a grown-up Bronya and a few new characters - and for an entirely new game: Honkai: Star Rail.
  • Signature Scene: The Herrscher of the Void taking over Kiana in Chapter 8, effortlessly defeating the Anti-Entropy mechs, while the epic song "Befall" plays over the background. The official Honkai Impact 3rd YouTube channel uploaded the animation as "Will of the Herrscher", and made it a YouTube ad for the game for a time; as of 2023, it has over 61 million views. Likewise, various gaming news websites used screenshots of this cutscene to showcase HI3 for gamers who were introduced to miHoYo because of Genshin Impact's prominence from 2020 onwards.
  • Starboarding: Otto has an unrequited love for Kallen which drives him to such lengths to resurrect her, but some may perceive his love as requited.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel:
    • The Dorms. Watching chibi versions of the characters doing cute things with an incredibly peaceful lullaby as a background music is probably a good way to cure depression and fatigue.
    • If the later parts of the main story feels too depressing for you, the spinoff comic and anime "Cooking with Valkyries" will help you ease your heart. With no shortage of endearingly heartwarming and funny scenes, on top of the mouth-wateringly tasty cooking scenes.
  • That One Attack:
    • Assaka has a lightning attack that slowly tracks your position and can deal up to 4 digit damage per hit (and your Valkyries' health are also at 4 digits), and also lasts a long time, during which it can also throw out its other attacks. The Memorial Arena version can throw out more of those lightnings at once. Due to this, the only BIO battlesuit that can safely fight it is Herrscher of the Void, as it's not only BIO-type, but also has powerful ranged attacks and quick movement.
    • It's common for guides for Benares in Memorial Arena fights (mainly at SS rank) to mention that it's better to bait it into turning into lightning form, as its other element forms have deadlier attacks. Two of them stand out: the fire form's flying fireball attacknote  and the ice form's tornado attacknote . In other modes like Dirac Sea or Q-Singularis, you'd be forced to fight either the fire or ice version of it.
  • That One Boss:
    • The Kallen boss is completely immune to elemental damage, so you have to bring physical damage dealers against her. Not to mention her restraining and impairing attacks and her Oath of Judah attack that deals heavy damage if you didn't evade it. Her Sakura Samsara version is even worse as she not only has truckloads of HP and hits much harder, she has to be defeated in a short time since, like other Sakura Samsara bosses, she will inflict fire damage over time once the timer reaches zero. Defeating her is near impossible through conventional means, though some Good Bad Bugs can be exploited to have the chance of defeating her.
    • MHT3-PAX is completely immune to Time Slow effects, and it has a thick front armor that greatly reduces its damage taken. It'll usually try to get to the edges of the arena, so that you can't attack it from the back (where it is more vulnerable); whenever it moves, it also moves very quickly so it's hard for your characters to catch up. It also has an attack (only after it goes to its 2nd phase) where it spins around while continuously firing its Wave-Motion Gun; only certain Invulnerable Attacks (most commonly an Ultimate Skill) can let you safely attack it. Note that after you get to its 2nd phase onward, it'll start attacking more aggressively, but also exposes its back more often (and opens the front armor to expose its weak point).
    • Husk - Nihilius has fast, relentless attacks and occasionally summons a time-warp dome that both slows you down and stops your SP regeneration for a while if you don’t get out of it. After a while, it will also summon a ghost clone that will copy its moves with a delay, making them even trickier to dodge, and can only be stopped by inflicting paralyze trauma. And once you deplete its health? It enters a second phase where you must either break the cogs of a giant clock one by one (in Abyss) or defeat an even faster clone (in Blockade) while its health slowly regenerates. Only then can you deal the final blow. Its only real weakness is that it is susceptible to the paralyze debuff, making the so-called "paralyze build"note  pretty effective against it.
    • Hephaestus is a Lightning Bruiser mech that gets even faster and more powerful in burst mode, can inflict burn and paralysis debuffs, and calls down jammers that prevent character switching within their area of effect. If attacked while a snowflake icon appears overhead, the burst mode will charge up even faster unless you freeze it. Just like MHT3-PAX, it is also immune to Time Slow. Even if you can manage to make it enter a vulnerable statenote , you'd only have a short window to deal bigger damage to it (around 10 seconds), after which it'll disappear for around 3-4 seconds and reappear at another point of the arena.
    • Herrscher of Thunder is a juggernaut as a playable character, but she isn’t any more of a slouch as a boss: she’ll often block your attacks, flash-step across the field, summon lightning clones (much like her older, Post-Honkai Odyssey self) and plain old lightning from the sky, and each hit you take fills a "blitzlock" gauge that will paralyze you for several seconds, leaving you open for a painful finisher. All in all, she won’t give you a second to catch your breath. Of course, her third and final phase has all of the above plus her dragon attacking you with its lightning breath from above, and she’s also (unsurprisingly) completely immune to lightning damage. There’s a reason this boss only appears in story mode and in special events.
    • Heimdall is a mecha boss that forces you to Do Well, But Not Perfect. In a game that encourages you to most of the time build teams to steamroll enemies with, Heimdall's main mechanic is to force you to not attack it too much in a short period of time. If you do, it literally Turns Red, turning into a Lightning Bruiser that zips around the arena dropping AOE puddles everywhere (though it enters this mode if you bring it down to about 50% HP regardless). The only way to get around this is to wait for Heimdall to put up a shield which you can break with an ability specifically marked as a Heavy Attack. After breaking its shield a few times, it enters a downed state where you can wail on it for several seconds.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Many players lamented that Wendy, the 4th Herrscher, only showed up in Chapters 3 to 4 and died in the latter. They wished to see more of her, particularly as she was stated to be a former Valkyrie.
    • As of recent story update, this happens to both Ana Schariac and Owl, the Herrscher of Ice and Herrscher of Earth respectively. Like Wendy, they only showed up in Chapter 18 and 19 and died in the latter. Unlike Wendy, there are several in-game files and story CGs in both chapters mostly dedicated on how close both Ana and Owl are, ever since the former rescued the latter, and as such, many players wished to see more of them. Unfortunately, the world isn't kind for both of them.
    • To a lesser extent, Hua(?). Fans expressed some liking towards this new take on Fu Hua for her Awesome Ego and rather childish personality, contrasting with the matured and worldly Fu Hua. In the end of ch. 22, Hua(?) decides to "leave" as she's embittered after losing to Kiana and Fu Hua and coming to terms with her real identity, Herrscher of Sentience. While she had it better than Wendy or Ana, the fans still lament that she doesn't stay for longer in the story, and wish that she'll appear again in the future. At least, she became playable as Herrscher of Sentience, and even appears in some limited time events.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • Storywise, Bronya was last seen at the end of Chapter 12, and Kiana at the end of ch. 17, and they are together again in Chapter 20. That chapter only gives token scenes of Bronya commenting that the current Kiana is different from the "Kiana Idiotka" she knew, as the chapter focuses more on them finding Fu Hua's memories. Prior to this chapter, a good number of fans wanted to see what has changed to the Hyperion crewnote  since their absence from the story, how they would react to Kiana and her situation, and how Kiana herself would react to them, among many other things; so they lamented the fact that they just went straight to the current plot. The only few hints of their activities are from Chapter 17's epilogue where the missing Kiana is found by the Hyperion crew, and the "files" in Mei's event in Version 4.1 where Kiana's said to be still grieving about Mei joining the World Serpent and how it affects everyone in the Hyperion.
    • Granted while it gets resolved in the main story chapters, the Schicksal HQ Open World story line ends abruptly with no real conclusion or segue into the main story chapters.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Honkai Impact 3rd's character models, animations, and particle effects stand out as being particularly top-notch, especially considering it's originally made for mobile phones and tablets and only received a PC port in late 2019. Then there are several action sequences sporadically released online, made in full-blown CGI animation and surpassing the fluidity of even some of the best actual anime studios!
  • The Woobie: All of the Valkyries could qualify as Woobies, but the following in particular definitely stand out as having the most tragic backstories out of all of them:
    • Bronya was raised to be a Child Soldier, only to be captured by her target and brought to an orphanage where numerous experiments were put on the children. She got bullied by one of the orphans there and later got pushed down the stairs, resulting in her being crippled. The closest thing she had to a close friend there was Seele, who became a victim of one of the experiments; in the process of trying to get to her, Bronya went through with the same experiment, which caused her to suffer brain damage and lose her emotions. While she eventually got prosthetics from Schicksal, she still occasionally has lingering feelings over her lost friend.
    • Sakura's younger sister was sacrificed by the very village she protected to "appease the gods". The villagers by and large showed no remorse whatsoever towards Sakura despite that, and were generally very rude and ungrateful to her. Even when she managed to find the closest thing to love and happiness in Kallen, she still ended up being possessed by a Herrscher due to her lingering negative emotions, and ended up having to be defeated and sealed by Kallen. For 500 years after that, she existed in a "stigmata world" where, due to the Herrscher's influence, she was forced to relieve her dark past countless times so that the beast could fully take over her body and consciousness. The events of Sakura Samsara, however, has her finally escape this fate, as (with Kiana's interference) the Herrscher is slain, making her free from her curse.
    • Kiana becomes this once it's revealed that unbeknownst to her, she's a clone of the real Kiana—and god knows what would happen if she ever figures out. Not to mention the string of tragedies and tribulations that she's gone through, both in the past and present, detailed in her character section.
    • Luna Kindred Theresa (Valkyrie Pledge's Awakening) may also count from what we see in her stand-alone story arc. Forced to live in solitude and only being able to survive on blood, she escapes from her place of holding. Unfortunately, she has a bad case of Horror Hunger and finds herself killing people by draining them of their blood, feeling horrified each time she does it. At the end of her arc, either you (the player) are forced to kill her, or she seemingly gives in to her blood lust.
    • Raven is shown to have had a very rough life. Her home country of Siberia was devastated during the Second Honkai War, forcing Raven and her brother to scavenge to survive. When it was discovered that she had Honkai resistance, she was taken by Gray Serpent, leaving her brother for dead in the ruined Siberia. She was forced to undergo rigorous training to become an assassin for the World Serpent. Even her attempts to secure a peaceful future for herself and her loved ones have proven futile, as her private island and villa have been destroyed by a Honkai eruption.
    • Fu Hua's whole backstory of coming from the wiped out Previous Era which she doesn't even remember and what led to her working under Otto. This is all detailed in her character section.
