General
The color kids are a group of ambiguously aged beings who help the Sprites mine the color crystals and apply color to Rainbow Land, a distant planet. Although they have a tendency towards getting kidnapped, or trapped, or somehow disabled, they can always count on their friend Rainbow Brite to save the day.
- Adaptation Name Change: Depending on which country your from, all of the color kids and their respective sprites have totally different names.
- Ambiguously Human: Besides Rainbow Brite, it's ambiguous if the Color Kids are actually human. Nothing is known of their backstories, they're abnormally short, they have unnatural hair colors, it's never mentioned if their names are nicknames or not, and it's implied they're older than they seem.
- Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Despite being named after their specific colors, all 7 (and later 8) color kids' outfits embody the color they represent.
- Demoted to Extra: Apart from Rainbow Brite and Red Butler, most of the Color Kids were reduced to this in the 2014 reboot.
- Kid Hero: They all look like children and protect Rainbow Land. One episode mentions that the Color Kids usually only call Rainbow for help dealing with problems if they're really serious, implying that they can handle problems like Murky and Lurky on their own most of the time.
- Minor Living Alone: There Are No Adults around to take care of them so they all live together.
- Only Six Faces: Barring their very different designs, in actuality, they all are the same height, face, and size, with only their hair and outfits distinguishing them. Subverted with Patty O' Green, who is slightly physically smaller than the rest.
- Painting the Frost on Windows: They are all in charge of the colors and things related to their respective colors.
- Pint-Sized Kid: They manage to be significantly shorter than the eleven-year-old Brian.
- Remember the New Guy?: Moonglow, Stormy, and Tickled Pink pop out of nowhere randomly one episode and it's never explained where they were before.
- Sixth Ranger: Moonglow, Stormy, and Tickled Pink are not officially Color Kids but they hang around them sometimes.
- Vague Age: Some lines imply they're Older Than They Look, maybe even Really 700 Years Old.
- World of Technicolor Hair: All of the kids (barring Rainbow, Stormy, and Moonglow) have hair that's a shade of their Color Theme.
Rainbow Brite
Voiced by: Bettina Bush (80's English), Sanae Miyuki (Japanese), Emily Osment (2014 reboot)
Although she may be small, her good deeds and the magic she performs with her powerful Color Belt, more than make up for her size! Although full of fun, Rainbow always makes sure her work comes first. She may be enjoying a merry game with her friends, but should a sun-drenched field of wheat be in danger of losing its beautiful yellow color, or a forest of green trees need its green leaves reviving, Rainbow is there in a thrice providing them with all the color they need. She does this by scattering lots of Star Sprinkles which turn magical in Rainbow's fingers. Rainbow lives in the Color Castle with her friends.
Born Wisp from planet Earth, she is chosen by the Sphere of Light to protect Rainbow Land from the King of Shadows and his nefarious plot to steal all color. Although she isn't one to back down from any challenge, Rainbow Brite takes on foes and friends alike as her main goal is to keep Rainbowland full of colors!
- Artistic Age: She could be anywhere from 6 to 12. Although her design varies over different continuities, her age is never actually confirmed/specified. Likewise, to appeal to a mass audience, her design takes cues from different ages, such as being short and chubby with cute hair, but also wearing a uniform of sorts and having mature opinions.
- Conveniently an Orphan: If she hadn't been an orphan she wouldn't have been able to save Rainbow Land.
- Determinator: Her main character trait in the original show, especially in the pilot where she enters Rainbow Land determined to save it no matter what it takes.
- Genki Girl: In the reboot.
- Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She has blonde hair (in contrast to Canary Yellow's light yellow hair). Rainbow is very sweet and heroic.
- Heartwarming Orphan: Prior to becoming Rainbow Brite, Wisp was an orphan.
- Hero with a Unique Name: She is the only Color Kid who is confirmed to be nicknamed. Her name was "Wisp" on Earth.
- Innocent Blue Eyes: She has soft blue eyes to go along with her blonde hair.
- The Leader: She is the leader of the Color Kids.
- Magical Girl: A rare western example.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: Her real name "Wisp" is only referenced in the pilot.
- Parental Abandonment: It's never explained thoroughly however her parents are dead.
- Plucky Girl: When she lands in Rainbow Land she makes it her mission to help return it to normal.
- Phrase Catcher: Coming from the empowered Color kids to Brian, 'Rainbow, help!' is uttered at least twice per episode.
- Rainbow Motif: Obviously. She wears rainbow colored clothes and has rainbow related powers.
- Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: While not as energetic as other examples, she's clearly more ready for action and emotional than the stoic, usually foul tempered Krys.
Red Butler
Voiced by: Mona Marshall (English, 80's), Cam Clarke (English, reboot)
Red Butler made his first appearance in "Peril in the Pits", along with many of the other original characters.
Red is an adventurous boy who is in charge of the red Star Sprinkles. He is often assisting the color kids and protecting Rainbow Land from Murky and Lurky. In typical hero fashion, with cape and a take charge attitude, his bravery can have its drawbacks as it often gets him into trouble. No fear, however, because the Color Kids and Sprites are always on hand to help and get him out of it, proving that every hero needs a helping hand.
Red is usually seen supervising and taking charge of difficult tasks around Rainbow Land, such as mining the color caves for crystals, to supervising their cut into Star Sprinkles.
- Badass Cape: Had one in the original cartoon.
- Catchphrase: "Don't tell me how to [X], I know all about [X]!"
- Fiery Redhead: He has a hotheaded, headstrong personality to go with his bright red hair. Heck, his first lines (apart from the scene explaining the Color Kids' plight) was "Is someone in this cave!? I know someone's here! I'LL FIGHT YOU!"
- The Leader: Among the Color Kids, otherwise he's Rainbow's Lancer.
- Number Two: More apparent in the reboot, where he's the one monitoring the situation and reporting directly to Rainbow.
- Punny Name: Red Butler = Rhett Butler.
- Those Two Guys: With the only other male color kid, Buddy Blue.
- Red Is Violent: While he represents the color red, he is also the quickest of the color kids to resort to violent tactics against Murky and Lurky.
Lala Orange
Voiced by: Robbie Lee (English)
Lala Orange is the little girl in charge of all things orange. She is very lady-like and romantic. Her biggest crush is Red Butler, and they are often seen together. Lala's name is French, and she wears a beret, which is often associated with French fashion.
- The Fashionista: She is quite into her appearance.
- Least Rhymable Word: Unlike the others her name isn't a Punny Name or a Meaningful Name.
- It may be a play on "duck à l'orange", a French dish consisting of roast duck and orange sauce.
- Puppy Love: She has a crush on Red Butler.
Canary Yellow
Voiced by: Mona Marshall (English, 80's), Alexandra Krosney (English, reboot)
Rainbow Brite's favorite Color Kid is Canary, because yellow is such a cheerful color! Canary always looks on the bright side, no matter how bad things seem, and she helps everyone to cheer up and smile again. Because she is so trusting, poor Canary Yellow is often caught by Murky Dismal, but Rainbow always rescues her. Canary Yellow's sprites work in the mines of the Yellow Plains to provide all the Star Sprinkles Rainbow Brite uses to make the yellow color needed in the world.
- Cheerful Child: She's the most perky of the Color Kids.
- Circus Brat: Dresses in an acrobat's leotard and is known for her gymnastics.
- Genki Girl: Although she's not as excitable as other examples, compared to the other girls, she's a cheerful ball of energy, though it's Depending on the Writer.
Patty O'Green
Voiced by: Mona Marshall (English, 80's), Mariana Flores (English, reboot)
Patty is very mischievous. She just loves playing jokes on everyone! But she has such a sweet nature that the others naturally forgive her. She is very proud of being in charge of the Green Grange section and does tend to boast a little. But when you think just how hard she and her sprites work, producing all the green needed in the world, well, she has every reason to be proud, doesn't she? Think how many leaves and blades of grass there are!
- The Baby of the Bunch: Her childish appearance, stemming from her bandaged legs, braided twin tails, bloomers, rounded face and generally younger attitude has her come across as this. Not to mention the fact that she is consistently chided by the other color kids and Rainbow for acting out and her immaturity.
- Born Lucky: She's known for being lucky.
- The Prankster: Patty loves playing pranks on others but keeps them lighthearted.
Buddy Blue
Voiced by: Pat Fraley (English, 80's), Evan Cooper (English, reboot)
Buddy and his blue sprites spend their days in the Blue Zone making sure there are enough blue Star Sprinkles for the blue sky, the waves of the sea and the blue flowers and all the blue things in the world.
But Buddy is also a great athlete. He loves health food, and he talks about it non-stop. He often organizes team events and other sports programs and sporting activities. The others do get a bit bored with all this, but they try not to show it as Buddy is a very lovable boy.
- Academic Athlete: He is the most athletic character and often talks about healthy eating.
- Lovable Jock: Although he can come off as pushy with his health kicks, Buddy Blue is still shown to be a good friend and helpful when he's needed.
- Verbal Tic: When he's excited or wound up he tends to refer to the other color guards as 'kid' or 'kids'.
Indigo Doll
Voiced by: Robbie Lee (English)
Indigo's ambition is to be a famous actress, and she spends her life 'on stage', rehearsing and reciting lines from famous plays, and wearing very imaginative costumes! She and her sprites in the Indigo Acres are rather dramatic and given to dreaming, and Indigo sees herself as a great artist full of drama and emotion. But she does make sure that there is a good supply of indigo Star Sprinkles.
- All There in the Manual: Her surname is only referenced in a coloring book. Otherwise she is called "Indigo".
- Girlish Pigtails: She wears her hair in pigtails.
- Large Ham: She's very into putting on a good performance, on and off the stage. So much so, that she wrote an entire play and only gave herself lines.
- Odd Name Out: Her first name is colour-related, not her surname.
- Token Minority: Depending on the source, she's either African-American or East Indian.
Shy Violet
Voiced by: Robbie Lee (English)
The Star Sprinkles which Shy Violet and her Sprites produce in the Violet Valley are the color of wisdom and knowledge Violet is a shy genius who spends most of her time reading and writing all about color. She can help Rainbow Brite solve almost any problem, however difficult, and everyone asks her advice because she is always right!
- Full-Name Basis: When not referred to as "Violet" she is called by her full name.
- Meaningful Name: She is shy and she has violet hair.
- Shrinking Violet: As her name suggests, she is quite shy.
- Smart People Wear Glasses: She has glasses, is the tech-savvy, and likes science.
- Token Minority: She's Asian-American.
- Wrench Wench: She has a knack for fixing things.
The Dark Princess
Voiced by: Rhonda Aldrich (movie) Molly Ringwald (2009 reboot)
Dark Princess: YES! DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM!?
The main villain of the movie, she is a spoiled princess with dark powers who seeks to steal the diamond planet Spectra, even though taking it would drain all color and life from the universe and eventually destroy it. Though her plan failed and her spaceship exploded, she returned in the final TV episode to menace Rainbow Land, enslaving the Sprites to dig up diamonds in an attempt to regain her lost powers. She is also the main villain of every reboot of the series.
- Amulet of Concentrated Awesome: Her magic jewel. When it's destroyed, her castle and army crumble into sand.
- And I Must Scream: She threatens to turn Rainbow Brite into a diamond to wear around her neck.
- Animal Motifs: She seems to have a thing for spiders.
- Bait the Dog: In the movie the Dark Princess frequently comforts her pet gemstone and promises she won't let Rainbow Brite or Kris hurt it. This goes out the window when she needs it for fuel, though.
- Big Bad: Of The Movie, the final episode of the TV show, and both reboots.
- Bratty Teenage Daughter: She acts like this, though there's no telling where her parents are, or how old she is.
- Breakout Villain: Originally the main villain of the movie, she returned for the final episode of the TV show and was the main villain of both reboots.
- Child Hater: She hates Rainbow Brite, Krys, and their friends.
- Companion Cube: Her large green jewel, which she treats like a pet, leads on a leash, and scolds for not 'walking' fast enough. She uses it for ship fuel once her engines fail at the last minute.
- Cool Chair: Standard for the brattiest Evil Overlord.
- Dark Is Evil: All there in her title.
- Entitled Bitch: Taken up to eleven: all she cares about is herself and wants Spectra even if the entire rest of the universe dies as a result.
- Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": She's only called The Princess or The Dark Princess, with no name given.
- Eviler than Thou: The most vile character in the series, and certainly worse than Murky. Not that that's hard.
- Evil Redhead: She's a villainous character with red hair.
- Excessive Evil Eyeshadow: The only character visibly wearing makeup, and the most evil.
- Greed: Her defining trait. The Dark Princess's favorite thing is diamonds, and she'll go to any lengths to get them.
- Human Aliens: She could pass for a human, but lives on a distant planet in a world where humans haven't invented space travel yet.
- Inconsistent Coloring: Her TV appearance added yellow streaks to her hair.
- It's All About Me: Her other defining trait. The Dark Princess cares only about herself and her wants.
- Omnicidal Maniac: She wants a shiny Cosmic Keystone and doesn't care (or perhaps believe) if getting it will destroy the universe.
- Power Crystal: She has magical abilities which depend on her having high quality gemstones on her person to use. The jewel she has in the movie was good enough to rival Rainbow's belt in power.
- Psychopathic Manchild: No telling how old she actually is but her behavior is on par with a spoiled three-year-old. The actual children in the setting are far more mature than she is.
- Royal Brat: She has no checks on her power and all her goals are absurdly petty.
- Sorcerous Overlord: She's a royal magic user, though we don't ever see her territory beyond her castle.
- Suicidal Cosmic Temper Tantrum: She decides to smash Spectra, which would destroy the universe, after obtaining it becomes impossible.
- Unexplained Recovery: She somehow survives her ship's explosion to menace Rainbowland in the final episode.
- Vain Sorceress: Implied. She never boasts of her beauty but loves her jewels, clothes, and other adornments.
- Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: It's a colorful kids show, and she's an evil tyrant who enslaves an entire race of cute little aliens to do her bidding and wants to steal Spectra even if it kills the entire population of the universe.
- Villainous Princess: The Dark Princess is a recurring villain of the franchise and perhaps the biggest enemy of the titular heroine and her team. In The Star Stealer, she is the greedy Big Bad who enslaves her people and is willing to destroy all existence just to get her hands on a diamond planet. She returns as the villain of the reboots as well.
Count Blogg
The Dark Princess's manservant, who obeys her every command. He assists her in enslaving the Sprites in the final TV episode.- Amazing Technicolor Population: He's a green humanoid with red eyes.
- Bodyguard Betrayal: Possibly. He personally oversaw the Princess's ship's construction and fueling. When it finally takes off, it seems there wasn't enough fuel to get far from the Princess's home planet at all.
- Fake Wizardry: In the show, he uses trickery to pretend he turned Twink into a frog to force the Sprites to obey, when in fact Twink was just bound and gagged.
- Yes-Man: He serves the Princess's every whim. Doesn't do enough of the heavy lifting to even qualify as The Dragon.
The King of Shadows
- Big Bad: For the 2-part TV special "The Beginning of Rainbow Land", and the comic book series.
- Dark Is Evil: He and his shadow powers are evil.
- In the Hood: He's depicted as an evil being in a cloak and hood.
- Killed Off for Real: He's defeated and destroyed for good at the start of the show and never reappears afterward.
- Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: Just like the Dark Princess, he is never used comically, and it’s clear he kept Murky and Lurky in line through fear.
- Would Hurt a Child: He tries to kill Wisp several times throughout the special.
- You Know the One: The people of Rainbow Land call him "The Evil One."
Murky Dismal
- Big Bad: He's the recurring enemy of the Color Kids.
- Dragon Ascendant: Was originally a minion of the King of Shadows. After the King's demise, he became the main villain himself.
- Freudian Excuse: As a child, he loved colors then one day he colored on the walls and his mother scolded him to clean it up, even if it took the rest of his life. This caused him to loathe colorful things.
- Gadgeteer Genius: His inventions may be weird, but they work, sometimes a little too well.
- Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: In the movie, his bumbling attempt to ally with the Dark Princess results in his spaceship crashing through her throne room and distracting her, allowing Rainbow to defeat her.
- Not-So-Harmless Villain: Murky has his moments, such as when he captured and tortured Moonglow with light. In the same episode, he nearly killed Rainbow by pushing her into a pit, and in the TV specials, he worked for the King of Shadows, and his own creation, the Monstromurk, nearly destroyed Rainbow Land.
- Really 700 Years Old: In one episode it's mentioned that he (and the King of Shadows?) last tried to use the Monstromurk to take over Rainbowland seven hundred years ago.
- Sinister Schnoz: He has a large nose.
- The Starscream: In the reboot he plans to betray the Dark Princess and rule Rainbow Land himself.
- Villain Team-Up: He's quick to ally with the Dark Princess, though he's not much help to her.
- Villain Song: He gets one called "The Pits" on the series official album with Lurky.
Lurky
- Affably Evil: He's pretty nice and can hardly even be called evil.
- The Ditz: He's pretty dim and silly.
- Dumb Muscle: He's big and he's not the smartest character by far.
- Minion with an F in Evil: He isn't that good at being an antagonist.
- Obliviously Evil: He is actually a pretty nice guy, he just doesn't seem to realize that what he's doing is wrong.
- Toxic Friend Influence: He's only a villain because he hangs around Murky.
- Villain Song: Again, he shares "The Pits" with Murky.
General
- Cartoon Creature: They are very small, mothlike creatures with fuzzy antennae and round, large eyes.
- Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Every sprite has a different color, as well as pun based name.
- Meaningful Name: If their name isn't punny, then it probably serves some deeper meaning in connection to its character.
- Punny Name: Like their owners, the color kids, their names are derived from color-based puns. See other installments of this trope for details.
- Only Six Faces: They all look incredibly similar, even for a species! The only way to differentate them is by color.
Twink
The white sprite, he follows Rainbow Brite, even if he is a little cowardly about it.- Adaptation Name Change: In the reboots he was renamed to "Twinkle" and "Mister Glitters".
- Cartoon Creature: He's a small, fluffy thing with antenna.
- Have a Gay Old Time: "Twink" is gay slang for a slim, attractive, youthful-looking gay man. Apparently, this was not common knowledge to toy executives in the 1980s, though the term was recorded as early as 1963. (This is probably the reason for the Adaptation Name Changes.)
- The Reveal: Twink isn't actually a naturally white sprite, rather, he was red (which explains his legs) and had the color forcefully removed from him by Murky and Lurky. This could explain why he's so cowardly.
Romeo
The Red Sprite, he's hot-headed and quick tempered, much like his owner.- Fiery Red Head: A literal example, as he is just a head with red hair.
- Meaningful Name: Romeo, the red sprite, is associated with romance as Red Butler is named for the leading man in an iconic romance film.
OJ
The orange sprite, she loves fashion almost as much as Lala Orange!- Adaptation Name Change: OJ was renamed to "Mango" in the extras for the DVD rerelease of Star Stealer and the wave of merchandise accompanying it.
- Punny Name: OJ, as in 'orange juice'. As well, they are the orange sprite.
Spark
- Punny Name: Spark, as in 'lightning bolt'.
Lucky
- Meaningful Name: As the green sprite, Lucky is associated with Irish culture and is mischievous and short, like a leprechaun.
Champ
The blue Sprite, he enjoys winning more than he does playing games.- Meaningful Name: While not exactly named for the color, Champ is in relation to Buddy Blue's love of sports and winning.
Hammy
The indigo sprite, Hammy has a very outgoing personality and love for the arts.- Meaningful Name: Like Champ, Hammy is named for their owner's personality. Indigo Doll is known for her extravagant personality.
IQ
The quietest sprite, IQ represents the color violet and has a love of knowledge.- Meaningful Name: Like Hammy and Champ, IQ is more so named after Shy Violet's genius quirk.
Dee Lite
The latecomer Dee Lite is the personal sprite and assistant of Tickled Pink, who she helps bring the sun out every morning!- Oddname Out: Unlike the other color sprites and Nite Sprite, Dee Lite's name does not reference anything or is a pun in any way.
Nite Sprite
- Non-Standard Character Design: Nite Sprite's antenna do not end in stars like the other sprites, theirs end in crescent moons.
Orin Sprite
- Expy: Of Yoda, as he is an old master who has been training the hot-headed boy hero Krys so that he can fight their greatest enemy.
- Meaningful Name: Being the only naturally white Sprite, Orin means "light, pale, pine tree, fair, or pale".
Starlite
- Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: His fur is white but his hair is rainbow-colored.
- Catchphrase: Saying that he is the "most magnificent horse in the universe".
- Cool Horse: He certainly believes so and constantly brags about it. He can fly and talk.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Not necessarily a "jerk" but very pompous, self-absorbed, and a braggart. But he'll endanger himself without a second thought to help Rainbow Brite.
- Locked into Strangeness: He originally had a white mane until Wisp became Rainbow Brite.
- Sapient Steed: In contrast to the other horses.
- Small Name, Big Ego: Starlite brags about his importance all the time
- Talking Animal: He can speak and has magical powers but otherwise seems like a normal enough horse.
Moonglow
Voiced by: Rhonda Aldrich (English)
- Casting a Shadow: Her powers deal consistently with nighttime.
- Invisibility: She involuntarily turns invisible when she's working hard enough.
- Logical Weakness: Since her powers involve controlling the night, bright light makes it difficult for her to use them, and daytime sunlight is mentioned as nullifying her power completely. Too much exposure to unnaturally bright light could supposedly even burn out her powers for good.
- Mystical White Hair: Originally she was intended to have white hair but this was changed to pink because it was thought she looked old.
- Night and Day Duo: With her nighttime and moon-themed powers, she is the moon sentinel to Rainbow's (or Tickled Pink's) sun.
- The Night Owl: Because she designs the night sky, she's rarely awake in the daytime and is mainly nocturnal.
- Only Six Faces: Having the same hair and face/body as Tickled Pink, their designs are noticeably similar but still different enough.
- Painting the Frost on Windows: She's in charge of designing the night sky. This means she is rarely awake during the daytime.
- Spell My Name With An S: One VHS wrote her name as "Moonglo".
- The Spock: Although she's not exactly 'cruel', out of the three Mattel girls she is clearly the most level-headed and composed, willing to do her job no matter what.
Stormy
Voiced by: Marissa Mendenhall (English)
- Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Her horse is dark purple with a light purple mane.
- Dark Is Not Evil: Stormy has the darkest color palette out of the heroes. She is moody and sometimes mean but not an antagonist. Subverted in the 2014 version, where she starts off as one.
- Green-Eyed Monster: She indicates in the movie that, despite how much she loves making bad weather, she wishes she could make things bright and colourful like the other kids.
- Hellish Horse: Subverted. Skydancer looks the part but is not bad.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She can be stubborn and moody, but ultimately she's a good and well-meaning person.
- The McCoy: The passionate, hot-blooded, and moody one of the Mattel girls, she is very persistent with her own wants before others.
- Minion Manipulated into Villainy: Stormy in the 2014 reboot is this to the dark princess, after being alienated by the other Color Kids because her powers aren't as conventional.
- Painting the Frost on Windows: Stormy controls the weather but especially loves the rain.
- Token Evil Teammate: Although not exactly evil, she is noticeably more antagonistic than the other Color Kids and Mattel girls.
Tickled Pink
voiced by: Rhonda Aldrich
- Adaptation Distillation: In her most basic form (her card appearances and movie debut) she too has an important cheek tattoo like Rainbow. However, come her TV and later appearances, it's gone without explanation. Although hers is meant to be just as significant (because she's also originally a human), it is waved off (some say as a temporary tattoo) and never reappears, and it isn't until the 2009 reboot does she gain prominence among Rainbow again.
- Dub Name Change: In Germany, she is known as Penny Popperpink.
- The Kirk: She's a nice girl and is the balance between Moonglow and Stormy's wildly different personalities.
- Night and Day Duo: Some sources indicate that while Moonglow is responsible for the beauty of the night, Pink is responsible for the day/dawn. This theory has since been disproved, as seen above.
- Painting the Frost on Windows: As mentioned above, sometimes she's mentioned as being responsible for the beauty of the daytime sky. Again, this is not her actual role.
Brian
voiced by: Scott Menville
- The Everyman: Is a bit of an Audience Surrogate, particularly for any boys that may or may not be in the audience.
- Free-Range Children: In the Monstromurk episode, he stays in Rainbow Land for literally hours, keeping night watch for the Color Kids and Rainbow Brite without mentioning his parents once.
- Legacy Character: The 2014 version of him is this for Krys.
- Muggle Best Friend: He is a normal boy who befriends Rainbow Brite.
- Portal Door: Rainbow gives him a key that allows him to turn any door he uses it on into a portal to Rainbow Land.
- Puppy Love: It's implied that he likes Rainbow. Notably, he gets jealous when she compliments Red Butler and seeks to impress her on a few occasions.
- Tagalong Kid: Even though they're all kids, when he tries to pitch in and help out the Color Kids, they're more than capable of handling their jobs without him. When he does find something to do, his lack of experience causes him to mess it up, to his shame. He eventually manages to prove himself, though.
Krys
Voiced by: David Mendenhall (English)
- Affirmative Action Girl: Gender Inverted. He's introduced as someone with a tenuous relation to the movie's Quest Giver and presumably to give Rainbow a male costar in the hopes of attracting some interest from little boys.
- Cool Horse: His mechanical steed is named On-X.
- Foil: To Wisp, as while they're both competent kid warriors of their respective planets, Wisp is a leader while Krys is a definite soldier. This understandably fuels his complex against Wisp, as he's shown to lack confidence and revert to petty gender stereotypes when Wisp outperforms him.
- The Ghost: The only reason we know he exists in the reboot is he's mentioned by Rainbow Brite.
- Hero of Another Story: Krys is called upon as the boy warrior of Spectra, and is personally sought out by the Legendary Orin Sprite to protect a dying planet with a special power that he can only use once he overcomes his personal demons. He is, however, the deuteragonist in this film.
- New Powers as the Plot Demands: The beams from his prism weapon can do pretty much whatever the writer thinks of at the moment.
- Only One Name: Although it's debatable, as his press kit for the movie refers to him as Krys Tal, but he's just known as Krys by Rainbow and the color kids.
- Politically Incorrect Hero: He's initially dismissive of Rainbow because of her gender. Gets over it later, at least partly because he's dependent on Rainbow to energize his Prism Weapon.
- Power Crystal: Uses a Prism that Rainbow gave him to power himself.
- Related in the Adaptation: He's stated to be Brian's father in the 2014 reboot.
- Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: The cynical but petty pessimist to Wisp's optimist and action-oriented personality.
- Straw Misogynist: A defining trait for his movie appearance, he's noticeably antagonistic towards Rainbow Brite for no reason except she's a girl.
- Taken For Crystal: His Prism fires a ray that encases its target in clear crystal, thus incapacitating them.
