Twin Star Exorcists

    In General
  • Adaptation Species Change: In the manga, Rokuro is a human and Benio discovers she's a Kegare disguised as a human. In the anime, it's the other way around.
  • Adoptive Peer Parents: In the anime, Rokuro and Benio become little Sae's surrogate parents when they're only 16 years old.
  • Badass Family: Rokuro is the son of Abe no Seimei, the strongest exorcist to have ever lived. Benio is a distant descendant of Ashiya Doman, Abe no Seimei's rival, and her parents were competent exorcists. As the Twin Star Exorcists, Rokuro and Benio must fully awaken as Great Yang, the ultimate vessel of yang energy, and Great Yin, the ultimate vessel of yin energy. This way, Rokuro and Benio will conceive the most powerful exorcist who will possess the supreme powers of both yin and yang.
  • Battle Couple: The purpose of the Twin Star Exorcists is to be a married couple of exorcists that will raise a Badass Family to exterminate all Kegare. Rokuro and Benio have it more downplayed than expected because while both are strong exorcists of their own right, Benio tends to be Overshadowed by Awesome because of Rokuro's Kegare arm and some of the Twelve Guardians who team up with Rokuro. They can still form a powerful combination with the Resonance which boosts their attacks when they hold hands.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Rokuro and Benio fight quite often, but it's clear they feel attracted to each other and are just too stubborn to admit it.
  • Chastity Couple: By the second Time Skip, Rokuro and Benio get officially engaged after they have lived together for six years and the farthest they have gone is kissing. Even at their wedding night, neither of them feels ready to consummate their marriage and go to bed with their pajamas on.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: In her spin-off, Benio goes through her memories and finds out she briefly met Rokuro once when they were children.
  • From Roommates to Romance: Arima sets Rokuro and Benio up in a Bureaucratically Arranged Marriage and to make them become closer, forces them to become roommates by giving them their own house. After living together for two years, Rokuro and Benio come to love each other. Four years after, they're still living together and agree to get officially married.
  • The Gloves Come Off: They choose to keep their Super Mode hidden because releasing their full power means they'll be forced to get separated as Benio's Great Yin form can't live in the real world for a prolonged time. Early in the final arc, Sakanashi sends an invasion of Basara and casts a curse that summons a monster that would destroy the island if not destroyed. Seeing their regular power isn't enough, Benio unseals her yin power to unleash the power of Great Yin and Great Yang. They manage to destroy Sakanashi's monster in a few moments.
  • Happily Married: They have their official wedding ceremony in Chapter 85 and become a happy married couple.
  • Harmful to Minors: When they were still kids, Rokuro and Benio witnessed their loved ones dying in gruesome ways, leaving them understandably traumatized.
  • Heal the Cutie: Both Rokuro and Benio lived through traumatic events in their childhood where they lost their loved ones in a tragic way and this affected their personalities up to their teenage years. Rokuro completely withdrawn from exorcism after he was forced to kill his friends who were mutated into Kegare and Benio closed herself off emotionally from everyone to focus on avenging her parents after they were killed by a Kegare. Once they meet, Rokuro and Benio give each other the courage they need to overcome their pasts and find happiness with each other by falling in love.
  • Interspecies Romance: Benio is secretly a Kegare. She's meant to marry the human Rokuro and give birth to a Half-Human Hybrid who inherits the powers of yin and yang. Benio is able to accept the fact that she isn't human thanks to knowing that Rokuro will accept her no matter what. Later on, they officially become a couple and get married.
  • Kid Hero All Grown-Up: The series begins with both Rokuro and Benio being fourteen and later sixteen years old. After the second Time Skip, both are now twenty years old.
  • Let's Wait a While: Their wedding night ends with Rokuro and Benio sort of agreeing that they probably shouldn't have sex at least until the King of the Kegare is destroyed and their future child can be born in a peaceful world.
  • Light/Darkness Juxtaposition: The male Twin Star or Great Yang is the living embodiment of the yang energy or light-based powers that reside in humans. Meanwhile, the female Twin Star or Great Yin is the ultimate vessel of yin energy or darkness-based powers found in Kegare. Their child will be the most powerful exorcist due to inheriting the powers of yin and yang.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Other characters comment how Rokuro and Benio already argue like a married couple.
  • Long-Lived: Once they awaken their true forms, the Twin Star Exorcists gain a much longer lifespan than regular humans thanks to their vast spiritual power.
  • Male Might, Female Finesse: Rokuro smashes Kegare with one punch of his Power Fist, while Benio uses charms that increase her durability and speed in battle to make her so fast that she can't be seen by the normal eye.
  • Maligned Mixed Marriage: Defied. After Benio reveals herself as a Kegare in human form, some of the Twelve Guardians insist she should be executed as any other monstrous Kegare. Rokuro and Benio beg their fellow exorcists of the Tsuchimikado Island to accept their marriage and their unborn Half-Human Hybrid child. Thankfully, their closest friends, the head exorcist Arimori among them, side with them. Thanks to this, Rokuro and Benio can celebrate their wedding joyfully with their friends wishing them happiness.
  • Marked Change: When they enter their Super Modes, they get patterns all over their bodies.
  • Monster/Slayer Romance: A variation. Rokuro and Benio both start off as exorcists, but Benio eventually must be transformed into a Kegare so their child can use both yang and yin powers. Rokuro and Benio stay in love despite of this and Rokuro actually finds Benio's Kegare form to be very cute.
  • Official Couple: So official they're the title of the series and the premise consists of them becoming engaged so they give birth to The Chosen One.
  • One True Love: As the Twin Star Exorcists, Rokuro and Benio are literally destined for each other.
  • Opposites Attract: Rokuro is brash, loud and hot-headed, on the other hand, Benio is stoic, quiet and cool-headed. They're obviously made for each other.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: Rokuro and Benio at first are not happy with the idea that they are destined to marry and give birth to the Prophesied child. Eventually, they become closer and start to warm up to the idea.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: Their hair colors change to white when their Super Modes activate.
  • The Power of Love: Rokuro and Benio frequently gain strength by thinking about their feelings for each other.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Hot-Blooded and loud Rokuro is the Red Oni and the calm and reserved Benio is the Blue Oni.
  • Relationship Upgrade: In Chapter 72, Rokuro and Benio finally profess their love for each other, promise to never be apart ever again and share their Official Kiss.
  • Secret Legacy: The big reveal of the Twin Stars is that Rokuro and Benio are the last successors of Abe no Seimei and Ashiya Doman, respectively.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Rokuro loves no one but Benio, and vice versa.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: They're fated to meet, fall in love, and be separated after fully awakening as Great Yang and Great Yin because Great Yin will only be able to live in Magano once she can't hide her Kegare form anymore. To make it worse, unless Rokuro masters full control over Great Yang's power, Benio will be killed by Rokuro once she serves the purpose of giving birth to the prophesied child. Despite this, Rokuro and Benio are determined to Screw Destiny and achieve happiness together.
  • Super Mode: Both Twin Stars have access to a state where their powers increase to the maximum and their appearances change drastically. Neither Rokuro or Benio have entered these forms consciously, but when they transformed, Rokuro was able to briefly overpower Yuuto and Benio could handicap a Basara. It's notable that Rokuro's superpowered mode is bright and warm while Benio's is dark and scary. It's revealed later on that this happens when the Twin Stars channel the power of their progenitors; Abe no Seimei for Rokuro and Ashiya Doman for Benio. In these states, Rokuro and Benio become the living incarnations of yang and yin respectively.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: It's later revealed that, unlike other exorcists, the Twin Stars don't have guardian spirits. Instead, the true source of their power is within their bloodlines. Rokuro inherited yang energy from his mother, Abe no Seimei, and Benio inherited yin energy from her ancestor, Ashiya Doman.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Neither of the Twin Star Exocrists are human; Rokuro is an Artificial Human created by Abe no Seimei with the King of the Kegare from their combined bodies, and Benio is a Kegare disguised as a human until her yin power awakens. Abe no Seimei and Ashiya Doman created the male and female Twin Stars respectively in order for them to give birth to the Half-Human Hybrid who will defeat the King of the Kegare and allow Abe no Seimei to finally be free from her 1000-year long imprisonment. As expected, Rokuro and Benio are shocked when they learn about their true nature, but are able to come to terms with it because they love each other no matter what they are.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: When the series starts, Rokuro and Benio are both abrasive and moody teenagers who constantly get into fights with each other. By the time of the second Time Skip, Rokuro and Benio have grown into emotionally mature, considerate adults and they get along perfectly well after years of living together as a couple.
  • Willfully Weak:
    • After awakening as Great Yin, Benio refuses to use her yin powers because she would risk exposing herself as a Kegare to other exorcists and losing her happiness with Rokuro.
    • Likewise, Rokuro suppresses most of Great Yang's power after he absorbs it because he doesn't want to be separated from Benio.

A brash and headstrong boy who once swore he would cleanse all Kegare, but after surviving the "tragedy of Hinatsuki", he swore off exorcism altogether until he was put in an arranged marriage with Benio, forcing him to face his demons anew.

  • Accidental Pervert: Has happened a few times with Benio, such as him accidentally walking into her when she's dressing.
  • Adoptive Name Change: He was raised from infancy by a Kegare couple who called him Yoshihira. After they abandoned him and he was found by humans, he was renamed Rokuro Enmadou.
  • All-Loving Hero: Once he realizes the thousand-year war won't end as long as there's hatred between humans and Kegare, Rokuro starts searching for a solution that allows both sides to coexist in peace.
  • All or Nothing: Because of Rokuro's hot temper, he channels his power into strong but exhausting attacks that leave him vulnerable if his enemy survives. After the Time Skip, he's become disciplined enough to hold some power in reserve, so he can keep armor equipped.
  • Amnesiac Hero: Rokuro has no memories of his childhood before he arrived at the Hinatsuki Dorm.
  • Anti-Anti-Christ: In the anime, he learns he's the Cataclysm King, destined to Kill All Humans. With Suzu's encouragement, he decides to Screw Destiny.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Rokuro's right arm was eaten by his friend in Hinatsuki Dorm who had turned into a Kegare due to the result of Yuuto's experiment.
  • Artificial Family Member: His mother is Abe no Seimei, but due to being sealed away along with the King of the Kegare, she couldn't give birth to Rokuro in the natural way. Instead, Rokuro is Abe no Seimei's clone that she created herself by using the King of the Kegare as an incubator.
  • Artificial Human: It's eventually revealed Rokuro isn't a naturally born human. Instead, he was created out of Abe no Seimei's cells and spiritual power.
  • Badass Adorable: Especially when he was younger, but he still looks cute as a teenager and no less powerful for it.
  • Badass in Distress: At the start of the final battle against Sakanashi, Rokuro is captured and immobilized with yin Supernormal Bindings, making it difficult for him to escape despite being fully awakened as the Great Yang. His allies on the exorcist and Kegare sides join forces in order to rescue him.
  • Belated Love Epiphany: Rokuro comes to realize he's in love with Benio during their months-long separation after Benio is forced to stay behind while he travels to the Tsuchimikado Island.
  • Blood Knight: A downplayed example. He doesn't like violence so much as being able to vent his anger with Kegare by punching them. Once the events at Hinatsuki turned his anger inward, he fell into a Heroic BSoD and gave up exorcism for years.
  • Break the Haughty: Justified. He doesn’t understand, and underestimates, how hard the magano conditions are on the Tsuchimikado island, compared to the mainland, when he declares to the twelve houses that he’ll be the one to settle things with Yuuto, on said island, and comes off as arrogant as a result. So during his first magano mission he becomes painfully aware of how out of his league he was when dealing the magano atmosphere and the type of Kegare there seeing as he couldn’t do a thing and would’ve gotten killed if it weren’t for Tenma - who rubs it in his face later.
  • Broken Bird: Rokuro is constantly haunted by the memory of Hinatsuki because he was forced to kill his friends after they were turned to Kegare, and it clearly influences most of his actions in the present. He grows out of it after meeting Benio.
  • Bully Hunter: In the first episode of the anime, while Mayura is trying, and failing, to name anything that a girl would like about him, he spots a little boy being bullied by three thugs, each One Head Taller, refusing to return a snatched backpack. He immediately jumps into action to help the little glasses-wearing kid. Even though the performance was less than stellar, the result actually had the intended effect, ie the bullies fled, and the little boy got his backpack back, and showed genuine gratitude.
  • Child Prodigy: At only 12 years old, Rokuro was skilled enough as an exorcist to fight in a team of experienced adults.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Even if he wants nothing to do with being an exorcist, he can't help to jump into action every time he sees someone in trouble, especially children.
  • Classical Anti-Hero: Exorcism is pretty much the only thing he's good at, but his past traumas and insecurities make him reluctant from joining the fight. He gets better.
  • Clones Are People, Too: Although he's a clone of Abe no Seimei, Rokuro is his own person and everyone acknowledges him as such.
  • Cool Big Bro: Rokuro assumes the role of a carefree big brother figure to Arimori, Arima's neglected son.
  • Crisis of Faith: In the years following the Hinatsuki tragedy, he has become disillusioned with exorcism as a whole.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: The tragedy of Hinatsuki led to his disillusionment with exorcism... until he met Benio.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Rokuro was the Sole Survivor of the massacre of his entire dorm, later revealed that they had all been forcibly changed into Kegare and he was forced to exorcize them. Benio's twin brother was among them. Besides, he was also found in Magano, age around 6, with no memories at all.
  • The Defroster: Although Rokuro and Benio get along badly at the start, they bond after learning about each other's pasts and help each other overcome their traumas. Thanks to Rokuro's support and kindness towards her, the initially cold Benio smiles warmly at him and eventually falls in love with him.
  • Determinator: Not even punching a hole through his stomach can stop Rokuro from continue fighting.
  • Full-Name Basis: He initially calls Benio by her full name. She allows him to call her "Benio" quite early on in the manga, however.
  • Golden Super Mode: He gains one when fighting Yuuto allowing him to at least end the fight in a draw, it's not until after the two year time skip that he is able to willingly use it. This form is a manifestation of his link to Abe no Seimei.
  • Happily Adopted: A Kegare named Sutara and his wife Asuha adopted Rokuro in secret after Sutara couldn't bring himself to kill him. They raised Rokuro in the Outcast Valley until he turned six years old and they couldn't hide him anymore. Sutara and Asuha loved Rokuro like their own son and Rokuro was happy when he lived with them.
  • Henpecked Husband: After the first timeskip, the residents of the Seika Dorm comment on how Rokuro is completely under Benio's thumb even though they aren't officially married yet.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • He undergoes a major one in the backstory when his dorm mates at Hinatsuki are turned into Kegare, forcing Rokuro to exorcise them.
    • At the end of the first act of the final arc, Rokuro spends some days in low spirits inside a prison cell because of failing to keep his promise to Benio that she wouldn't need to expose her Great Yin form and leave him to go to Magano. He gets better thanks to Seigen hearing him out and giving him the push he needed to go get Benio back.
  • Horned Humanoid: His fully awakened Great Yang form has antler-like horns.
  • Hot-Blooded: He gets easily heated up in battle and likes to yell a lot.
  • Human Pack Mule: Sayo makes him carry all her shopping bags when she takes him with her to look around town.
  • I Am What I Am: After he learns the truth of his birth, Rokuro takes being an Artificial Human quite well. After all, he already knew the Twin Star Exorcists weren't normal and he still has it easy compared to Benio who isn't even human.
  • Idiot Hair: He has one strand of hair that stands out from the middle of his head.
  • Idiot Hero: He is utterly clueless in the grand scheme of Exorcist politics and the inner workings of the very group he formerly and eventually comes back to work for, even if he does keep what he learns in mind. Just about everything he does gets him berated and treated like a total moron. He's not totally hopeless, as he's actually more cleanly and arguably a better housekeeper than Benio at times, but he impulsively leaps head-first into numerous circumstances without looking first, which causes no small end of trouble for him.
  • Innocently Insensitive: When Mayura congratulates him for his official engagement to Benio, Rokuro cheerfully asks Mayura when she's going to find a romance for herself, completely oblivious to the fact that she's still pining after him. Rokuro then wonders why Mayura punches him in the face.
  • Insecure Love Interest: After he and Benio officially become a couple, Rokuro is overly self-conscious about Benio possibly thinking he's "lame" or "smelly".
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's rash, ill-tempered and rude, but a very good guy at heart.
  • Kill the Ones You Love: He was forced to kill his friends at Hinatsuki who were like family to him after Yuto turned them into Kegare.
  • Light Is Good: Rokuro is the ultimate vessel of yang energy and he's The Hero.
  • Like Parent, Like Spouse: His fiancée Benio looks like a taller, black-haired version of his mother Abe no Seimei.
  • Locked into Strangeness: After partially awakening as Great Yang, Rokuro's brown hair becomes white with two red strands.
  • More Teeth than the Osmond Family: He has shark-like teeth. Kamui calls him "the kid with fangs".
  • Moses in the Bulrushes: He was found by Seigen in Magano when he was six years old, with no memories at all, before he was sent to live at the Hinatsuki Dorm. It's later explained he was born in the Outcast Valley where nonviolent Basara hide. There, he was raised in secret by a Basara couple until his yang energy became too much to keep him hidden anymore and they were forced to abandon him.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In Chapter 104, Rokuro finally learns about his origins from Asuha, one of the Kegare who raised him. Then, he learns Asuha's husband, Sutara, was supposed to kill Rokuro as soon as he was born, but he spared him and raised him like his own son. Since Rokuro already killed Sutara during the Basara attack on the Tsuchimikado Island, he's horrified and grief-stricken as he realizes he killed his own adoptive father.
  • My Greatest Failure: For Rokuro, being unable to save his friends during the tragedy of Hinatsuki (he was actually forced to kill them). However, learning after two years that there was a way to save them really hit him hard.
  • The Nicknamer: Rokuro nicknamed Arima "Pervert Underwear Man" and Higano "Leg Fetish Bastard"... It's also likely that he was the one who nicknamed Atsushi and Shinnosuke (he calls them Acchan and Shichan). Eventually becomes a Brick Joke when he teams up with another, Tenma, and picks up the one he gave Itsuki Zeze, "Fatty-masa".
  • No Guy Wants an Amazon: He claims he doesn't like Benio's 'masculine' combat skill, though he has no problem fighting with alongside her. Given that this disgust is only mentioned when he's trying to dissuade other people from shipping them, it may be feigned. It should be noted that the occasions Rokuro finds Benio the most attractive is when she's being domestic and traditionally feminine.
  • Oblivious to Love: He's completely oblivious to Benio's and Mayura's love for him. Sayo makes it obvious enough, though. He's just embarrassed about that one. Even when Benio kisses him, he believes the lame excuse she comes up with out of embarrassment. He hasn't grown out of it when he turns 20 since he's still clueless to Mayura's repressed feelings for him, to her extreme frustration.
  • One-Hit Kill: His Power Fist can exorcise Kegare with a single punch.
  • Opposite-Sex Clone: Rather than being Abe no Seimei's son in the literal sense, Rokuro is her male clone that she created from her own cells and spiritual power.
  • Our Phlebotinum Child: He's Abe no Seimei's son born from her yang energy and modeled after Ashiya Doman, the man Abe no Seimei loved.
  • Patricide: Rokuro kills Sutara, his Kegare adoptive father who had joined the Basara's attack on the Tsuchimikado Island to kill Rokuro. Since Rokuro's memories had been erased, he doesn't find out about his relation to Sutara until he meets the latter's wife Asuha and he reacts as expected.
  • Porn Stash: In Episode 11 of the anime, Benio finds his porn magazines hidden in the back of one of his desk drawers. Benio was not amused.
  • Power Fist: He can turn his right arm into this.
  • Psychometry: After he fully awakens as the Great Yang, Rokuro can see memories by touching things and locations.
  • Raised by Orcs: He spent his early childhood being taken care of by a Kegare couple at the Outcast Valley in Magano. He wasn't aware of it because the couple erased his memories before they abandoned him.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He sports red eyes, and does get quite dangerous.
  • Refusal of the Call:
    • At the start of the series, Rokuro refuses to have anything to do with exorcism again because of his childhood trauma with the tragedy of Hinatsuki. He accepts to fight thanks to being reminded of his dream by Benio.
    • In the 20 year old arc, Rokuro has no intention of fulfilling his fate of awakening as Great Yang because he doesn't want Benio to be forced to live in Magano forever and leave him or for their child to be dragged into the battle against the King of the Kegare.
  • Silent Scapegoat: When Benio learns that Rokuro was the one who killed all the children in the Hinatsuki Tragedy, Rokuro admits to it without even trying to explain what exactly happened. This is because Benio is Yuuto's sister who doesn't realize her brother's true nature until it's too late, so Rokuro didn't dare to tell her Yuuto had turned the children into Kegare and used him as an Unwitting Pawn.
  • Sole Survivor: He's the only survivor from an attack by Kegare that killed eighteen of his fellow exorcist dorm mates.
  • Special Odd Hand: His right arm has the power to exorcise Kegare. He got it when Yuuto tried to turn him into a Kegare, but failed and instead replaced his right arm with that of a Kegare.
  • Stock Shōnen Hero: He fits the bill after he regains his resolve to be an exorcist. Hot-Blooded Determinator? Check. Aims to become one of the strongest? Check. Is powered by his feelings for his loved ones? Check. Gains allies through his spirit and feats? Check. Has greater abilities than others that make him special, including a Super Mode he has no conscious control of? Check.
  • Straight Man: Early in the series, Rokuro frequently points out the silliness of Benio's quirky behavior.
  • Stubborn Hair: According to the series' official website, Rokuro's Idiot Hair is a result of bed head that he can't fix.
  • Summon Magic: Having been taught by Arimori about how to use shikigami, Rokuro creates his very own based on Benio's character Ohagi Man. It's a variation as instead of having Ohagi Man fight for him, he transforms it into an armor for his arm in replacement for his temporarily sealed Kegare arm.
  • Super-Strength: Rokuro's charmed arm gives him incredible strength.
  • Survivor Guilt: The trauma of Hinatsuki initially made him lose all interest in exorcism, but he found renewed purpose after meeting Benio and finding out Yuuto is alive.
  • Telepathy: After absorbing Great Yang's power, Rokuro gains the ability to read people's minds.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: In the backstory, he is an ambitious young man who wants to live a good furure as an exorcist. However, the Hinatsuki incident causes him to become the cynical and ill-tempered man when he is introduced in the story.
  • Took a Level in Idealism: By the timeskip, Rokuro's far less cynical than he was at the start of the story; he is willing to live his purpose in life as an exorcist.
  • Understanding Boyfriend: As Benio had expected, Rokuro immediately accepts her transformation into a full-fledged Kegare, affirming his love for her will never change no matter what she becomes.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: His Power Fist allows him to one-shot Kegare that would usually take a whole team to defeat, but he also sucks at writing sutra and can barely maintain more than one enchanted equipment at a time. His training over the time skip rectifies this for the most part.
  • Unwanted Harem: Benio is his fiancée. Meanwhile, Mayura, Sayo, Shizuru and Suzu all want a piece of him.
  • Unwitting Pawn: For Yuuto when he turned Rokuro's friends into Kegare in the tragedy of Hinatsuki.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He and Yuuto were friends until the tragedy of Hinatsuki.
  • Wonder Child: Rokuro was raised by a Basara named Sutara who had the job to kill Abe no Seimei's sons right after they spawned from the King of the Kegare. However, he couldn't bring himself to kill the only baby who smiled at him. Since Sutara and his wife Asuha had no children of their own, they took care of Rokuro until he turned six and they erased his memories before abandoning him for humans to find him.
  • You Remind Me of X: Kengo thinks Rokuro might be able to help Kankuro overcome his trauma of being forced to kill the children he looked after since Rokuro went through a similar tragedy. Rokuro, however, doesn't believe Kankuro reminds him of himself, but of Seigen who was the adult having to shoulder with the guilt of failing to protect the children he felt responsible for.

A serious young girl out to destroy all Kegare and avenge her parents, who died protecting her. Upon meeting Rokuro, she has inspired him to return to being an exorcist.

  • Achilles in His Tent: In the middle of the final battle, Benio is unbrainwashed thanks to the efforts of Rokuro and her other friends, along with Subaru's sacrifice. However, Benio still refuses to wake up and instead stays sulking inside her subconscious, feeling bad about having hurt Rokuro and others while she was brainwashed. Yuuto has to possess her body to help Rokuro fight until Benio feels ready to get out of her funk and rejoin the battle.
  • A-Cup Angst: At first, she thought big breasts got in the way, but she starts growing jealous of Mayura's huge rack out of worry that Rokuro might believe in the Buxom Beauty Standard.
  • Action Girlfriend: Downplayed. Rokuro's life was never really normal to begin with, and he was actually quite powerful, but thanks to the tragedy of Hinatsuki, he was reluctant to fight until Benio enters his life and reminds him of what it means to be an exorcist.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Benio is a beautiful girl with straight black hair and white skin who is very popular among her peers, but is too cool and distant to befriend anyone until she meets Rokuro.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: Sakanashi's ultimate Evil Plan to destroy humanity has Benio at the center of it. First, he corrupts Benio to make her lose herself to the Great Yin's hatred for humanity. The next step is sacrificing all the humans of Japan and fusing their yang energy with Benio to create an articifial Yin-Yang Bomb that can destroy the King of the Kegare and cause the apocalypse for humanity in order to create a world ruled by evil Kegare.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Yuuto blows up her legs in an intense battle. Kamui immediately replaces them with Kegare legs.
  • Badass Adorable: She's fairly short, cute, but also a deadly fighter in her own right.
  • Battle Strip: She must take all her clothes off to change into her Great Yin Super Mode.
  • Betty and Veronica: In the early part of the manga, Benio plays the Veronica to Mayura's Betty. The series begins when Rokuro meets Benio and both are forced into a Bureaucratically Arranged Marriage because their baby is destined to save the world. At first, Rokuro and Benio do nothing but fight, but they soon develop feelings for each other. Rokuro's childhood friend Mayura has feelings for Rokuro too and grows jealous of his relationship with Benio. However, the Love Triangle doesn't last long because Mayura quickly becomes friends with Benio and she quietly gives up on Rokuro after understanding how much he needs Benio to be happy.
  • Big Brother Worship: Benio admired her older brother Yuuto, and greatly looked up to him. That was until her brother was revealed to be nothing but an evil monster.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In Chapter 72, Benio makes her long-awaited return by coming to the rescue of Rokuro when he's facing a swarm of Kegare by himself in the depths of Magano.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: When Sayo summons Benio's Guardian Spirit, the sclerae of Benio's eyes turns black, the iris yellow, and she becomes powerful and destructive like a Kegare.
  • Blood Knight: Benio really seems to enjoy fighting, to the point that she regularly enters Magano to fight Kegare instead of waiting for the ones already on earth to pop up. However, as of the second Time Skip, this trait seems to be dwindling as Benio mentions, and demonstrates, that she would now rather spend time peacefully with Rokuro instead of fighting all the time as they are very close to the huge changes that will be happening when Rokuro awakens as Great Yang.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Sakanashi brainwashes Benio with the power of the King of the Kegare. This causes Benio to become corrupted by the Great Yin and she joins Sakanashi's side to destroy humanity. She's returned to normal thanks to Subaru sacrificing herself to give Rokuro the chance to exorcise the corruption that made Benio lose control.
  • Broken Bird: Benio was much more cheerful before her parents were killed by Kamui. She gets over her trauma and opens up because of falling in love with Rokuro.
  • Brought Down to Badass: In chapter 32, after having her inner guardian called forth, Kuzonoha defeats it and Benio loses her spiritual powers. In spite of being unable to use any magic whatsoever at the time, she survives in Magano for five days, alone, with only a lunchbox.
  • The Bus Came Back: Benio spends over thirty chapters out of the main storyline after she loses her enchanted powers. Her comeback finally happens in Chapter 72 when she joins Rokuro in his rematch against Yuuto.
  • Cain and Abel: The Abel to Yuuto's Cain. She's the heroic younger sibling while her older twin brother is a major villain and has tried to kill her at least once.
  • Can't Catch Up: Rokuro starts stronger due to his Kegare arm, and every time she gets a power-up he gets one too, leaving her behind all over again.
  • Chainmail Bikini: As the Princess of the Kegare, Benio wears nothing but a skimpy bikini-like garment.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Even after losing her enchanted powers, Benio still jumps to save a kid from a Kegare.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: After the time skip, Benio acts very much like a jealous wife when she catches Rokuro "cheating" on her with Sayo. Benio admits to Sayo that seeing Rokuro with a member of the opposite sex makes her lose her mind.
  • Combat Tentacles: The Great Yin's corrupted form makes Benio grow tentacles from her neck and she uses them to attack her opponents.
  • Comically Missing the Point: An omake has Rokuro angrily denying that he wants to have a child with Benio and says that she'd probably be like a tuna in bed anyway.note  Benio immediately thinks of the positive characteristics of tuna and assumes Rokuro is praising her as a Determinator and Lightning Bruiser, causing a Luminescent Blush.
  • The Comically Serious: She tends to react to most of the comedic moments in the series with a straight look in her face.
  • Cool Mask: Her Enchanted Gear is called Izayoi Higan no Mai, which is a white fox mask that gets covered in markings when the spell is used on it.
  • Covered with Scars: Mayura sees Benio has scars all over her body from her frequent battles in Magano.
  • Covert Pervert: Benio is surprisingly prone to dirty thoughts.
  • Cute Monster Girl: After awakening as Great Yin, her true form is that of a gorgeous dark-skinned blonde with a horn on her head. Both Kaguya and Rokuro think Benio is the most beautiful Kegare they have ever seen.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: At only 8 years old, Benio witnessed the death of her parents who sacrificed themselves to protect her from Kamui.
  • Deal with the Devil: In order to fight again, Benio must form a pact with the most powerful Basara, Chinu, so she can fully awaken her yin powers as Great Yin in exchange of becoming a Kegare.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She's initially cold and hostile to Rokuro because she envies his power and doesn't get why he doesn't use it to fight Kegare. As they come to understand each other, Benio becomes nicer to Rokuro and falls in love with him. By the time she's a young adult, Benio has completely defrosted into a lovey-dovey soon-to-be bride who only wants to be by Rokuro's side. Rokuro even points this out and wonders when was that Benio's personality changed to such an extreme.
  • Demon of Human Origin: According to Chinu, Benio's humanity is just a "cocoon" before she fully awakens her yin powers as Great Yin. Benio eventually has to undergo a ritual that turns her into a full Kegare, basically becoming the same as the Basara.
  • Demoted to Satellite Love Interest: In the early part of the series, Benio acts as the Deuteragonist and Rokuro's Foil who has a tragic backstory that motivates her to exorcise all Kegare, which inspires Rokuro to rejoin the fight of exorcists. Starting from the first Time Skip, however, Benio's active participation in the plot is minimal due to the awakening of her yin powers leaving her out of commission for a very long time. While she's absent, her existence only serves to motivate Rokuro. Even after she finally rejoins the main cast, her role and motivations are mainly about her love for Rokuro and not wanting to be separated from him while he does have other stuff going on outside of their marriage.
  • Deuteragonist: Downplayed, bordering on subversion. Benio is the female half of the titular Twin Star Exorcists, but Rokuro notably eclipses her in terms of spotlight to the point Benio often seems to exist to motivate him more than anything. Even supporting characters like Mayura, Shimon and Tenma play bigger roles than Benio while she's absent for a chunk of the manga.
  • Discard and Draw: Early in the 16 year old arc, the clash between Benio's Enchanted Guardian and Kuzu-no-Ha causes Benio to lose her enchanted powers. In hopes of regaining her powers, Benio goes with Kamui to meet the first Basara Chinu, only to be told that it's impossible for Benio to use yang enchanted powers ever again. If she wants to rejoin the fight, she must awaken her hidden yin powers as Great Yin, but there's a horrible catch to this: Benio needs to stop being human and become a full-fledged Kegare.
  • Dramatic Ellipsis: Always speaks... with... ellipsis...
  • Dual Wielding: She fights with two charmed blades.
  • Eating Lunch Alone: At lunchtime, she likes to get away from everyone and go eat ohagi on the rooftop, by herself.
  • Enemy Within: After the second time skip, the Great Yin manifests as a corrupted entity that repeatedly tempts Benio to turn against humanity. Sakanashi's Mind Rape finally breaks Benio and causes the Great Yin to corrupt her.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Her reaction when she realizes that her brother is an evil monster to begin with.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: She was pretty popular among the female students of her old One-Gender School. And again in Rokuro's school after the timeskip.
  • Evil Costume Switch: When Sakanashi makes the Great Yin corrupt Benio, Kegare Benio's white Chainmail Bikini is replaced by a black Stripperiffic that's even more revealing.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: When she's corrupted by Sakanashi, Benio's irises and pupils are replaced with multiple concentric circles.
  • Eyepatch After Timeskip: After being separated from Rokuro for months, Benio returns wearing an eyepatch over her right eye.
  • Faux Action Girl:
    • Benio is said to be one of the strongest exorcists in Japan's mainland, supposedly being on par with Rokuro, but she doesn't have the performance to back up that statement. While she isn't necessarily incompetent or weak, Benio's major on-screen battles have her significantly outclassed by powerful enemies, like Yuuto and the Basara. It doesn't help that she often ends up incapacitated while Rokuro and other exorcists like Mayura handle the rest of the fight.
    • After the second Time Skip, this is more deliberate. Having already awakened as Great Yin, Benio should be way more powerful than any other exorcist excepting Rokuro's Great Yang form. However, Benio can't fight at her full strength without risking to expose herself as a Kegare, so she must considerably hold back which results in her ending up as a Damsel in Distress needing Rokuro to rescue her or she stands on the sidelines while Rokuro fights powerful Kegare.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: After the second Time Skip, Benio has become excellent Housewife material and Rokuro adores her food, especially the curry she cooks.
  • First Girl Wins: The first of the girls who fall in love with Rokuro introduced and the one destined to become his wife.
  • Foil: To her Arranged Marriage fiance, Rokuro. While the two of them went through nearly identical childhood trauma, coming from the same source, the trauma made her more determined to become the best exorcist the world has ever seen, yet broke Rokuro, and made him completely give up on his dream of being the strongest, until she shows up in his life and drags him back into it.
  • Forceful Kiss: In chapter 33, Benio surprises Rokuro with a kiss before he leaves to the Tsuchimikado Island. Since Benio did it without thinking, both are incredibly embarrassed and awkward afterwards.
  • Fragile Speedster: She's very fast and agile, but lacks physical strength and hasn't really shown much durability to speak of.
  • Freakiness Shame: Benio is horrified at learning that she's a Kegare in human disguise, thinking it makes her a monster like the Basara. After awakening as Great Yin, Benio is a little scared to tell Rokuro about her transformation. When she reveals her Great Yin form to him, the first thing Rokuro does is admire how beautiful she looks.
  • Friendless Background: Benio was so occupied with her duties as an exorcist that she never even tried to make friends at school despite the girls' clear intent of befriending her. Mayura soon becomes her First Friend.
  • Girliness Upgrade: She becomes much more traditionally feminine as an adult, now acting as Rokuro's ideal Housewife.
  • Hades Shaded: Her Superpowered Evil Side gives her dark skin.
  • Hair Color Dissonance: Her official hair color is black, although it sometimes looks closer to dark purple.
  • Hates Small Talk: She finds chatting bothersome and only speaks when it's very necessary.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • She's utterly shocked when she realizes that her brother wasn't what he seemed to be.
    • She takes a pretty big shock when Arima tells her she has lost her enchanted powers and therefore she isn't an exorcist anymore and can't go to the island with Rokuro. She locks herself in her room for days, completely trashes it while trying everything she can think of to draw out her powers again, and outright tells Baa-san that she wants to die.
    • According to chapter 37, losing her parents and being separated from her brother shook her up so bad, she couldn't even concentrate enough to form enchanted gear anymore.
  • Heroic RRoD: The first time Benio uses her brand-new Kegare legs against Yuuto, her body is incapable to withstand it for long due to lacking enough spiritual energy.
  • Hime Cut: She has blunt bangs, bra strap length sidelocks (chin-length as an adult), and mid-back length straight hair. She has this hairstyle to show her position as the head of the distinguished Adashino family and later, fiancée of the head of the new Enmadou household.
  • Horned Humanoid: Her Superpowered Evil Side has horns. She also gets a single horn on the right side of her head after becoming the Princess of the Kegare.
  • Human Disguise: After awakening as Great Yin, Benio is now a humanoid Kegare like the Basara, but Chinu taught her a technique that allows her to still look human by creating an illusion that makes others perceive her yin energy as yang energy. However, this technique will only be effective until Rokuro fully awakens as Great Yang and when that happens, Benio will stay in her Kegare form permanently.
  • Humanizing Tears: Given how composed and aggressive she normally is, the moments in which she cries are very moving.
  • Hunter Of Her Own Kind: Benio has been raised as an exorcist who has the job of exterminating all Kegare that prey on humans. She eventually discovers she's secretly a Kegare herself.
  • I Am What I Am: Benio decides she's fine to complete her transformation into the Princess of the Kegare because she's sure Rokuro will accept her no matter what she becomes.
  • I Didn't Mean to Turn You On: Played for Drama. Benio accidentally falls into a river of Magano and Kamui witnesses her getting wet and taking off her leggings. This leads to Kamui ripping off Benio's clothes out of unconscious sexual desires towards her.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Having suffered so much from being an exorcist and the Great Yin, Benio's deepest wish is getting away from the war between exorcists and Kegare to live a normal and peaceful life with Rokuro. Sakanashi uses this weakness to make the Great Yin corrupt Benio.
  • Important Hair Accessory: At the end of the 14-year-old arc, Benio changes her bobble hair ties for the flower-shaped hair pins Rokuro wins for her at a fair, symbolizing how she's growing out of her cold attitude thanks to her new romantic feelings for Rokuro. When she's an adult, she has stopped wearing hair accessories to make her look more mature.
  • Impoverished Patrician: Essentially everyone else in her clan is either dead or corrupted, so it was abandoned by the island's Decadent Court. Rokuro and Kinako vow to bring it Back from the Brink.
  • Inconsistent Coloring: Benio had blue eyes in early manga colorings, but the color was later changed to cyan.
  • Inhuman Eye Concealers: After her awakening as Great Yin, Benio wears an eyepatch to conceal her right Black Eye of Crazy so others don't find out she's a Kegare in Human Disguise.
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: In the first part of the final arc, Sakanashi sends several Basara to attack the island in order to force Benio to transform into Great Yin and follow them to Magano. Seeing people dying all around her and Rokuro pushing himself past his limits to fight alone, Benio unlocks the seal Chinu placed on her and permanently transforms into a Kegare. Afterwards, Benio begs Rokuro to forget about her and continue living as a human without her, as the Basara are willing to go to the extremes to use her Great Yin form for their plans. Of course, this doesn't work since Rokuro won't let the Basara take his wife away that easily.
  • It's Personal: She wants to avenge her parents' death, given they died protecting her.
  • It Was a Gift: The anime shows her bobble hair ties were a gift from her brother Yuuto. They are later replaced by a pair of hair pins given to her by Rokuro.
  • Kick Chick: After gaining Kegare legs, Benio fights almost exclusively with kicks.
  • Leg Focus: Several of her fanservice shots are centered around her legs. At one point, Kamui lost control of himself when he saw Benio take off her leggings.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Looks like her mother with her father's personality, including his love for ohagi.
  • Love Confessor: In Episode 44 of the anime, Benio finally admits to Mayura and Kinako that she's in love with Rokuro.
  • Love Epiphany: In chapter 33, Benio finally admits to herself that she is in love with Rokuro and kisses him.
  • Macguffin Super Person: The Basara invasion orchestrated by Sakanashi at the start of the final arc is actually a ploy to force Benio into releasing her Great Yin form and joining the Basara in Magano as Sakanashi's plan to "save the world" requires Great Yin's power.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: After fully awakening as Great Yin, Benio's human form now has a right eye with black sclera which she hides with an eyepatch.
  • Modesty Shorts: She wears spandex shorts under her Minidress of Power.
  • Ms. Exposition: She explains to Rokuro the exact functions of the powers and equipment for exorcism.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Benio has the highest number of nude and bath scenes out of any girl in the series.
  • Mystical White Hair: As Great Yin, she's a humanoid vessel of yin energy and this transformation changes her long black hair to white.
  • Neutral Female:
    • Both confrontations with Yuuto end with Rokuro and Yuuto having a fistfight while Benio does nothing but watch from the sidelines. The first time it was justified because her legs were injured, but not the second time.
    • Rokuro's fight against Kamui shortly after the second Time Skip has Benio once again standing on the sidelines as she watches the battle play out.
  • New Transfer Student: She transfers into Rokuro's class early in the story. Rokuro assumes Arima also had something to do with this coincidence.
  • Non-Human Lover Reveal: Benio is a dormant Kegare and later becomes a complete one. She didn't know about this herself until Chinu explained to her what being the female Twin Star really means. While shaken by this revelation, she's able to accept it thanks to her love for Rokuro and certainty that he will accept her for who she is and not what she is.
  • Ojou: Benio is the head of the distinguished Hondo-Adashino Family from Kyoto.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: After Kamui helps her several times, Benio promises to repay him by making sure he doesn't die until the day she exorcises him.
  • Out of Focus: Despite carrying the title of main heroine, Benio doesn't have much panel time in the 16-year-old arc because the loss of her enchanted powers forces Benio to stay behind when Rokuro travels to the Tsuchimikado Island. While she has a subplot going on about her quest to recover her powers, it takes a back seat to Rokuro's adventures on the island and Benio completely disappears from the manga for over thirty chapters. She finally returns to the spotlight near the end of the arc once she reunites with Rokuro.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Benio is a highly skilled exorcist of her own right, but it's hard for her to show it off when Rokuro has a Kegare arm that gives a One-Hit Kill. Eventually, even Mayura outshines her after the latter becomes the new host of Byakko.
  • Paint It Black: At the time of her big return, Benio has switched her white Cool Mask for a black one and her new exorcist gear is pure black too. This symbolizes the awakening of Benio's yin powers.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: She responds with extreme violence whenever she thinks Rokuro does or says something perverted, even if it's him simply walking in on her in the bathroom while half-asleep, and not being used to the fact that Benio pretty much forced her way into the house where he lives.
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: Benio's hair grows past her knees when she enters her Great Yin form.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: When Rokuro is forced to go into his Great Yang Super Mode by a mysterious new enemy, Benio begs Rokuro to return to normal and not leave her behind because she's terrified of losing her human form and having to stay in Magano for the rest of her life.
  • Present Absence: Benio stays absent throughout the entirety of the Tsuchimikado Island arc, but Rokuro is constantly thinking about her and she remains one of his biggest motivations for about everything he does.
  • The Quiet One: When Rokuro meets her, Benio doesn't say a word to him for a very long while. Even after she starts to open up, she doesn't say much unless she has to.
  • Raised by Humans: Benio is a unique case of a Kegare who was birthed and raised by human parents. Her Kegare nature was just dormant until it was time for her yin energy to awaken.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She has long black hair and pure white skin and she's found beautiful by anyone she meets.
  • Reincarnation: Benio is the latest reincarnation of Great Yin's soul that has been reincarnating in Ashiya Doman's bloodline for generations.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: To her dismay, Benio several times ends up exposed in embarrassing situations with Rokuro.
  • Rescue Romance: She begins to fall for Rokuro after he saves her from being killed by Kamui.
  • Resigned to the Call: Benio is very shocked and horrified when she's told by Chinu that the female Twin Star must become a Kegare in order for the Prophesied child to have both yang and yin powers. She still goes through the ritual to awaken her dormant yin powers since she can no longer use yang enchanted powers and she promised Rokuro to rejoin him in the battlefield.
  • The Sacred Darkness: Benio is the Great Yin, making her an embodiment of the yin energy that makes up the Kegare. However, her purpose is helping save the world by marrying the Great Yang and giving birth to a Yin-Yang Bomb who'll be able to destroy the King of the Kegare.
  • Sadistic Choice: When she was eight, a super strong Kegare gave her ten seconds to decide which one of her parents he should kill and which one he should save. She can't decide, and he asks her parents instead- their lives or Benio's. They say Benio with no hesitation whatsoever.
  • Secret Legacy: She's a distant descendant of Ashiya Doman, the creator of Kegare.
  • Sense Loss Sadness: Due to her permanent transformation into a Kegare, Benio loses her sense of taste. She cries as she realizes now she won't be able to taste the food she loved nor cook for Rokuro ever again.
  • She's Back: After her very long absence, Benio finally makes her return in the middle of Rokuro's climatic battle against Yuuto in the depths of Magano.
  • Shorttank: Early in the series, Benio is the headstrong and combative main heroine who butt heads with the main hero. She grows out of this over the course of two Time Skips as she becomes a lovely wife for Rokuro.
  • Shower of Angst: In Chapter 12, Benio takes a shower at the end of the day she met her brother again and discovered his true evil personality. She's obviously distressed about the whole deal.
  • Significant White Hair, Dark Skin: Benio's Superpowered Evil Side changes her appearance to give her white hair and dark skin, as her body is filled with yin energy like the Kegare.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Benio at first detests Rokuro because she thinks he's a coward with no sense of justice. After he saves her from Kamui and helps her overcome her past traumas, Benio sees the kind-hearted and noble guy Rokuro really is and she falls in love with him.
  • The Stoic: Benio rarely shows any emotion.
  • Stripperiffic: At the time of her comeback, Rokuro calls Benio out on showing up in a provocative exorcist gear with a skintight front that leaves almost nothing to the imagination. Chinu was the one who put her in it.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She looks a lot like her mother.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Her aloof and reserved personality leads her to be dismissive towards others, but she's still a compassionate person at heart. Once she develops feelings for Rokuro, there are moments in which she can drop the Ice Queen act to be sweet to him.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: When Sayo summoned Benio's Guardian Spirit, her appearance and power resembled a Kegare's. Said change allows her to fight evenly one-on-one against Higano and blow up his leg while she remained pretty much unscathed. As a reminder, it took herself and Rokuro using Resonance (which multiplies their power about 5~10 times) to blow up Kamui's, who is several times weaker.
  • Super-Speed: She usually fights by speeding around and hitting opponents before they can even register what's happening.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: Just like the most powerful Basara, Benio's Great Yin form has golden eyes.
  • Theme Naming: Benio's attacks all have dances in the name.
  • Through His Stomach: She asks Kinu to teach her how to cook to become more attractive in Rokuro's eyes. When they're adults, one of the things Rokuro loves the most about her is her cooking and Benio calls her secret ingredient love.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Benio is very violent and lacks many traditionally feminine skills such as cooking, which Rokuro teases her about. She still dresses and acts fairly girly.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: When she's first introduced, Benio is standoffish, emotionally repressed, and reclusive because of the childhood trauma of her parents' death. She comes out of her shell after falling in love with Rokuro. By the time she's an adult, she has become much more emotionally open and smiles often.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Really, really likes ohagis. In the anime, she wants to start a Ohagi-man anime. She says they're ready anytime and already has a theme song.
  • Transfer Student Uniforms: Benio is introduced wearing the school uniform of her old middle school in Kyoto. In the anime, she keeps wearing it when she transfers into Rokuro's school.
  • Trapped in Another World: This is her fate as Great Yin. Kegare can only spend a very limited amount of time outside Magano due to their yin bodies not being able to withstand the yang energy of the real world's atmosphere. Once Rokuro fully awakens as Great Yang, Benio will stay as a Kegare forever and she'll be forced to spend the rest of her life in Magano.
  • Trash of the Titans: When she and Rokuro are forced to live together, Rokuro complains Benio has her exorcism equipment and dirty clothes scattered everywhere around the house.
  • Tsundere: She gets flustered easily and beats the crap out of Rokuro when he's being rude or walks in on her in the bathroom. However, Benio has romantic feelings towards him, even if she attempts to deny them. By the end of the 16-year-old arc, she has completely outgrown this and is very open about her love for Rokuro. Her fits of anger are now reserved for when other women get too close to her fiancé.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: Played for Laughs. In her first appearance, she mooches food off of Rokuro and slaps his hand away when he tries to take some. What's worse is that her response to Rokuro rescuing her from a Kegare she has no chance against is to step on his foot and angrily lecture him.
  • Unknown Rival: To Rokuro. Once she witnesses his power as an exorcist, Benio insists on fighting him and surpassing him. Rokuro, for his part, doesn't have any interest in competing with Benio and he wants nothing to do with being an exorcist. This blows off quickly.
  • Was It All a Lie?: When Yuuto reveals how evil he truly is to her, Benio desperately asks if the kind brother of her memories who promised to avenge their parents together with her was a farce. Yuuto coldly answers that he never once cared about Benio and their parents nor considered them his family, calling Benio a failure of an exorcist and their parents some "bags of flesh".
  • Weak, but Skilled: She uses equipment sutras to give herself Power Armor and Super-Speed, but struggles against big tank enemies. Thanks to Kamui, this has changed somewhat, but she still seems weaker than Rokuro or even White Tiger!Mayura.
  • When She Smiles: In Chapter 18, Rokuro gives Benio a prize he won while they were hanging out by themselves in a local festival. After Benio smiles sweetly in response, he blushes profusely and thinks he'd like to make her smile more.
  • The Worf Effect: She's often the first one taken out in battle, as she usually gets the short end of the stick when the plot needs other characters to show off. Ths changes when her Superpowered Evil Side awakens.
  • You Are What You Hate: Like Rokuro, Benio hates Kegare for being evil monsters and her goal is to exterminate them all. She eventually discovers she's a living vessel of yin energy, making her a Kegare herself.
  • You Killed My Father: Her main goal is exorcising Kamui, the Kegare that killed her parents. She also wanted to avenge her brother, but turns out he's alive and he's not the kind brother Benio remembered.

Tsuchimikado Household

    Arima Tsuchimikado
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/arima_anime_design.png

Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa (Japanese), Matthew Mercer (English)

The leader of the exorcists of Japan.

  • Action Dad: As the head of the Tsuchimikado family, he's the strongest exorcist in the island and he has a son who aspires to become as powerful as him.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • In Chapter 30, he arrives to save Mayura when she's cornered by Kegare.
    • In Chapter 62, he comes to rescue Rokuro's squad from Shiromi.
  • Big Good: He holds the supreme authority over the exorcists of Japan that fight to purify evil Kegare that threaten humanity.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He's the chief exorcist, but has an eccentric and laid back demeanor. It gets lampshaded in the second chapter.
  • Childhood Friends: He has known Seigen, Narumi and Arata since middle school and is shown to have a bit of a soft spot for them. When Narumi dies, Arima mourns the loss of an old friend.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He acts like a goof most of the time so it's hard to take him seriously. We finally see him in action during the Basara attack during the mission to fight Yuuto. There, Arima shows off he's possibly stronger than the Twelve Guardians, except for maybe Tenma and Tatara.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: He's able to create shikigami replicates of himself that are about as powerful as him.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: Before his body completely shatters, he tells his son Arimori that he loves him.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted and justified. He doesn't even get yelled at for deliberately speaking ill of the victims at the tragedy of Hinatsuki, despite him claiming otherwise in his "apology" afterwards. This is likely due to the fact he negated the powers and abilities of both Benio and Rokuro simultaneously with a simple gesture, after driving both of them into a murderous frenzy and pitting them against each other. Rokuro may be Hot-Blooded, but he's not an idiot.
  • Final First Hug: After being fatally wounded defeating Sakanashi, Arimori lets his father know that he doesn't resent him for how cold he was and he still feels proud of him. Arima and Arimori share a depressing hug and say they love each other before Arima's body is Reduced to Dust.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: He sports glasses and seems to have little morality.
  • Go Out with a Smile: He gently smiles at his son before his body disintegrates.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Sakanashi cuts his body in half with a One-Hit Kill.
  • Horned Humanoid: After transforming himself into a Kegare, he has four horns growing from his head.
  • I Gave My Word: Everything he does is for the sake of keeping the promise he made to his dead wife and create a peaceful world where Arimori won't have to fight.
  • Jerkass: He isn't exactly the nicest guy, and is more than willing to use underhanded things to get what he wants. His riling up Rokuro before revealing he and Benio are the Twin Stars, by simply stating that his dead friends didn't deserve to live, is only scratching the surface. Though he does apologize, it's very clear that he'd trigger anyone again without remorse. He also treats his son terribly, even if it is to drive him away from the burden of the exorcist war.
  • Living on Borrowed Time: His body gets ripped in half by Sakanashi. Arima transforms himself into a Kegare to keep himself alive for a while longer and kill Sakanashi.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He has very long hair and a very attractive face.
  • Lord Country: He's the head of the Tsuchimikado household that rules over the Tsuchimikado Island.
  • The Mourning After: He never remarried after his wife died and her death greatly affected his personality.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: His Kegare form has three arms.
  • Naked People Are Funny: He's introduced in nothing but his underwear just for comedic effect.
  • Papa Wolf: When Arimori was born, Arima felt his entire purpose to live from then on was to protect his son. When Shiromi attacks Rokuro's squad of which Arimori is a member, Arima goes personally to kick the Basara's ass as repayment for hurting his son.
  • Parental Neglect: Arima is very callous towards his son Arimori, outright calling him a disappointment as an heir. The truth is Arima loves his son a lot and treated him coldly so Arimori wouldn't feel sad when he died.
  • Perpetual Smiler: At least in the anime rendition, it's very hard to tell how sincere he is at any given time because he's always smiling, regardless of the situation. He can be smiling with childish glee. He can be showing a smug or Psychotic Smirk. If he's being particularly vindictive or manipulative, he can sport a Slasher Smile. But he always has a smile on his face, even when he's claiming to be apologetic.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: The head exorcist is possibly the strongest exorcist in Japan.
  • Reduced to Dust: His body begins to crumble after his battle with Sakanashi and after a final conversation with Arimori and Rokuro, he turns to dust.
  • Sacrificial Lion: He dies taking down the second Basara Sakanashi in the climax of the Tsuchimikado Island arc.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: He wants Rokuro and Benio to marry so they can give birth to the Prophesied child.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Because of the drastic changes done to the anime storyline, Arima is still alive at the end of the anime. In the manga, he pulls a Suicide Attack to defeat Sakanashi.
  • Stepford Smiler: He isn't as happy-go-lucky as he makes others think he is.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: Arima has golden-yellow eyes and he's the Head Exorcist with the high-level enchanted powers to show it.
  • Taking You with Me: He finishes Sakanashi off by casting an explosion spell that also destroys most of his own body and he dies after a final moment with his son.
  • We Have Reserves: He notes that if Rokuro and Benio get killed, he can just wait for the next Twin Stars to be born.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: All he cares about is the Twin Stars having the Prophesied child, who will end a 1000 year war, other than that everything and everyone else is meaningless.
  • The Worf Effect: How can we tell Sakanashi's Unchain is uber-powerful? The Head Exorcist Arima gets ripped in half before he can even try anything against it.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Arima knew he was predestined to die in the battle of Magano known as the Singularity. He tried to avoid it so his son wouldn't have to fight, but he failed in the end.

    Arimori Tsuchimikado
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsuchimikado_arimori.jpg

Son of Arima Tsuchimikado.

  • Attractive Bent-Gender: Girls' clothes suit him a little too well.
  • Big Good: After the death of his father, Arimori becomes the new head of the Tsuchimikado household that rules over the exorcists of Japan.
  • The Chains of Commanding: After the second time skip, Arimori must deal with the pressure that comes with filling his father's shoes as the head exorcist. Particularly, he argues against the exorcists who expect him to take more ruthless decisions.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Rokuro needed to see Arimori naked to be entirely convinced he's a boy.
  • Family Theme Naming: Arimori, son of Arima.
  • Friendless Background: He looks so feminine that Rokuro can tell Arimori learned about summoning shikigami because he doesn't have friends.
  • Grade Skipper: He's so smart that he was accepted into the exorcist high school at 12 years old.
  • In-Series Nickname: About everyone but Rokuro calls him "Arisu" because the character for "mori" in his name can also be read as "su". This is also the Japanese pronunciation for "Alice".
  • Lonely Rich Kid: His father always keeps himself busy with work, the servants at his mansion only ever urge him to act as a dignified heir and his only source of companionship are his shikigami. He says he wants Rokuro to be his personal manservant, but he's really just looking for someone who actually listens to him.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: His hair is much longer after the second Time Skip and he has become even prettier than before.
  • Lord Country: He's the successor and later head of the Tsuchimikado household that rules over the Tsuchimikado Island.
  • Nice Guy: He acts a bit like a brat to Rokuro at first, but all he wanted was a bit of attention because his father neglects him. Once Rokuro befriends him, Arimori is a gentle and sweet-tempered boy.
  • Princely Young Man: Arimori is the only heir to the top exorcist house on Tsuchimikado Island and everyone but Rokuro treats him like royalty.
  • Shower Shy: He gets extremely flustered when taking a bath with Rokuro. Rokuro has to force him to take the towel off.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: After the second Time Skip, Rokuro points out Arimori has grown to look almost identical to his father, even wearing glasses like his father did.
  • Summon Magic: An expert in summoning shikigami.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: He inherited the golden-yellow eyes of his father and he's the successor to the family that leads the exorcists in the country.
  • Survivor Guilt: The attack of Sakanashi's Kegare army wipes out half of the island's population. Afterwards, Arimori blames himself completely for the disaster happening under his watch and feels like he didn't deserve to survive.
  • Teeny Weenie: Rokuro clears all doubts that Arimori is a boy when they take a bath together, but Rokuro says Arimori is still "smooth down there", to Arimori's annoyance.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: All he wants is to be acknowledged by his father.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: He wears a female exorcist gear during missions. The mangaka also likes to make drawings of Arimori wearing dresses just because he looks cute in them.
  • Young and in Charge: After the second Time Skip, Arimori is now the new ruler of the Tsuchimikado Island at 16 years old.

Adashino Household

    Yuuto Ijika
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuuto_anime_design_5.png

Voiced by: Ayumu Murase (Japanese), Vic Mignogna (English)

Yuuto is Benio's older twin brother. After their parents were killed by Kamui, the siblings were sent to live with different relatives, thus he doesn't have her same surname. Yuuto was taken into the Hinatsuki Dorm where he met Rokuro who became something between his best friend and rival. Both became Seigen's apprentices. It's soon revealed that Yuuto was the perpetrator behind the Tragedy of Hinatsuki as it was all an experiment where Yuuto tried to grant the other children the same power as Kegare, but only Rokuro and himself were successful while the other children were turned into Kegare and Rokuro had to kill them.

  • Adoptive Name Change: He was born Yuuto Adashino, but changed his surname to Ijika after his parents died and he was adopted by a branch family. Because of the different surname, Rokuro didn't know Yuuto is Benio's brother at first.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: After his ultimate defeat and death, Rokuro and Benio cry their eyes out in front of Yuuto's empty grave. No matter the unforgivable, hideous crimes he committed, Yuuto was still Rokuro's childhood friend and Benio's brother.
  • Aloof Big Brother: He states pretending to be a good brother for Benio was nothing but a source of stress and, once they reunite in Magano, declares he never once acknowledged her.
  • Ambition Is Evil: The main motive behind all his evil is seeking ways to become the ultimate exorcist by combining the power of yin and yang inside a human body.
  • Arch-Enemy: As Rokuro's Evil Former Friend and the perpetrator of the tragedy of Hinatsuki that caused Rokuro's trauma, Yuuto is Rokuro's most personal enemy.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: When he appears as a schoolgirl inside Rokuro's Mental World, Yuuto looks like Benio with lighter hair.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He was very nice to Benio, but states he was pretending all along. His rude behavior at Hinatsuki is the real thing.
  • Break Them by Talking: Does this to Benio in the form of a "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
Yuuto: What are you doing, Benio? I told you everything I was thinking. If you understand, can you hurry up and disappear?
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • He was an exorcist who Benio held in highest regard until she discovered that Yuuto caused the tragedy at Hinatsuki.
    • Yuuto became disgusted with the exorcists he once admired after he saw visions that showed him the exorcists making human experiments with Yin energy that resulted in the creation of Kegare.
  • Cain and Abel: He becomes his twin sister Benio's enemy after he reveals himself as evil to her. He's so cruel to her that he mocks her for being weak and blows up her legs.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Both his hair and eyes are blue when he's not using his powers.
  • The Dark Side Will Make You Forget: Originally, Yuuto started developing forbidden techniques of Yin energy because he wanted to obtain the power to protect his family. Eventually, however, his descent into madness made him forget the reason why he wanted power in the first place.
  • Death Seeker: What little is left of his original self is so broken that he really wants Rokuro and Benio to kill him.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: He's the biggest and most personal enemy of Rokuro throughout the 14-year-old and 16-year-old arcs. He dies after becoming exhausted from battling Rokuro, Tenma and Benio at the end of Part 2. Sakanashi then takes over as the following Final Boss.
  • Dying as Yourself: At the end of their rematch, Rokuro manages to punch Yuuto back to his senses, but it's too late because Yuuto's body has reached its limit. Before he disintegrates, Yuuto remembers he did care about Benio and talks to her like he did when they were children.
  • Enfant Terrible: When he was only 12, Yuuto tricked all the kids Hinatsuki Dorm and used them for an experiment that transformed them all into Kegare. Before that, he also killed the Ijika family shortly after they took him in.
  • Evil Former Friend: He was the closest to Rokuro out of the Hinatsuki orphans until Yuuto turned all the orphans, except for Rokuro, into Kegare.
  • Eye Colour Change: His eyes become yellow when he uses his powers, which is more noticeable.
  • Eyepatch of Power: He wears an eyepatch over his left eye.
  • Eye Scream: He plucked his own left eye out in exchange of becoming able to use yin energy.
  • Faux Affably Evil: When he meets Rokuro again, he smiles a lot... to Rokuro, at least, and repeatedly alludes to their former friendship. His crazed expression shows quite clearly that it's just a facade, however.
Yuuto: Isn't this the scene when you cry and joy and say "You were alive, Yuuto~"?
  • For the Evulz: His motivations when setting up the tragedy in Hiinatsuki Dormitory that ended up making his friend, Rokuro, traumatized.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: What caused him to start going insane was horrifying prophetic dreams that showed him an apocalyptic future where the King of the Kegare destroyed everything and humanity perished. When his parents were killed by Kamui, Yuuto saw this as a signal that the future he saw would come true, which made him desperate to find ways to become powerful. As he began studying forbidden techniques, he forgot why he wanted power in the first place and his mind was polluted to the core.
  • Harmful to Minors: When he was a little kid, he had hellish nightmares that showed him the worlds where the King of the Kegare destroyed everything. Witnessing such horrors at a young age and not finding a way to talk it with anyone made him into the psycho we know.
  • Hate at First Sight: Yuuto at first found Rokuro to be the pinnacle of the person that he hates the most. However, a strange feeling began to stir him like he almost met another version of himself.
  • The Heavy: Throughout the first half of the series, one of Rokuro's main motivations is to get revenge on Yuuto, who caused the Tragedy of Hinatsuki. Yuuto is the biggest villain in Part 1 and later shares the role with Sakanashi in Part 2.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After his death at the end of Part 2, Yuuto's soul is purified and he comes back as a spirit to help Rokuro several times. It culminates in him possessing Benio's body to team up with Rokuro in the final battle, since Benio is too depressed and mentally weak to fight at the moment.
  • How Dare You Die on Me!: His reaction to the death of his parents was reproaching about them just dropping dead and leaving him and Benio orphaned. Although, he did know that was a very crappy thing to think about his own parents.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Before he went completely crazy, Yuuto was shocked that he violently hit Benio when she was crying over the death of their parents.
  • Paradox Person: According to Arima, the female Twin Star never had a twin brother throughout the ever-repeating cycle of the exorcist history. This makes him think Yuuto's existence might be the key to break the cycle and take a different direction from the one predetermined.
  • Poor Communication Kills: He could have told his family, Rokuro or Seigen about his prophetic nightmares with the King of the Kegare and gotten himself allies to prevent that hellish future, but instead, Yuuto stayed suffering in silence and started experimenting with yin energy by transforming humans into Kegare.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: When using his powers, his hair apparently becomes a slightly lighter shade of blue. It's only visible on color pages, though.
  • Pre-Insanity Reveal: Yuuto wasn't always the power-hungry and bloodthirsty lunatic we know. Originally, he really was the kind brother Benio remembered until one day, he fell off a cliff and he started having nightmares of a future where the King of the Kegare wiped out humanity. After the death of his parents, his dreams showed him how the ancient exorcists created a forbidden technique that turned humans into Kegare and everything went downhill from there.
  • A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: He was also a student of Seigen, who is greatly regretful of having taught him without realizing Yuuto's evil ambitions.
  • Quit Your Whining:
    • After the death of their parents at hands of Kamui, Yuuto got annoyed with Benio spending all day crying about it and even hit her while telling her to stop being such a weak crybaby.
    • In chapter 127, he berates Benio for refusing to join the final battle despite knowing Rokuro and her friends need her help, just because she feels bad about letting Sakanashi brainwash her and attacking her allies as a result. Since Benio still doesn't want to stop sulking, Yuuto possesses her body to join the battle in her place.
  • Reduced to Dust: After Rokuro defeats him, Yuuto's body turns to dust right before Benio's eyes.
  • Soul Fragment: Yuuto dies at the end of his battle against Rokuro, Tenma, and Benio. However, a small piece of his soul is absorbed by Rokuro, thanks to the fragment of Great Yang's power that Sakanashi left in Yuuto. Once Great Yang's soul enters Rokuro's body, Yuuto lets Rokuro merge with the piece of his soul so he can challenge Great Yang's soul and control its power.
  • Spirit Advisor: After his death, Yuuto's spirit lingers inside of Rokuro, thanks to both of them absorbing the Great Yang, and appears to him to advise him when he's in big danger.
  • Split-Personality Takeover: The evil Yuuto Ijika was originally another personality the good Yuuto Adashino developed in his mental breakdown caused by his prophetic nightmares. Not being able to bear with the guilt of the atrocities his other personality committed, the original Yuuto is long gone and the only thing left is an insane monster.
  • Stepford Smiler: The insane variety. His smiles hide a very twisted and psychotic personality. When he was a child, he was the depressed variety. He smiled at Benio to pretend he was alright even though his prophetic nightmares were driving him to despair.
  • Tragic Villain: Yuuto was a good boy until he was in an accident that awakened the dark memories of Great Yin he shares with Benio. With the death of his parents and his mind being unable to endure the horrors his visions showed him, he went completely insane and ended up becoming the kind of evil he wanted to protect his sister from.
  • Two Siblings In One: In the final battle, Benio is left unconscious from having the Great Yin's corruption expelled from her body. Chinu tries to wake her up, but instead, Yuuto possesses his sister's body because she feels too guilty about having attacked Rokuro and her friends while she was brainwashed, forcing Yuuto to take control of her body in order to help Rokuro in the last fight.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: He was a gentle kid who truly cared for his twin sister until the day he almost died in an accident and the prophetic nightmares began, gradually making him go insane.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He does not take it well when Benio, whom he doesn't even consider a person, obtains the same power as him and Rokuro.
  • Walking Spoiler: His real identity, motivations, and relationships with the main characters are spoilers in themselves - just look at his entry!
  • We Can Rule Together: He attempts repeatedly to persuade Rokuro to join him as his Evil Minion.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: No one ever realized exactly how evil he was before he put his plan into motion, which resulted in the death of every children in the Hinatsuki Dorm except Rokuro and him. It also doubles as a side-effect of Power Dyes Your Hair, so his eyes are only yellow when he is being sneaky.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: He can merge the energies of yin and yang inside his body. After the second time skip, it's revealed that Yuuto was given a fragment of Great Yang's soul by Sakanashi, who wanted to do an experiment to see what would happen if a human being combined the powers of Great Yang and Great Yin.

    Kinako
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kinako_anime_design.png
Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama (Japanese), Joey Lotsko (English)

A fox-like familiar created by Benio when she was a child. After Benio had to move away from the Tsuchimikado Island because of the death of her parents, Kinako stayed behind and promised to guard the household until Benio returns. Because of Yuuto's crimes, all the Adashino retainers left until only Kinako was left. When the house is about to be demolished, Rokuro steps in and declares he will turn the abandoned Adashino House into his own Enmadou House.

  • Adaptational Comic Relief: In the anime, he exists for no purpose other than to be the Plucky Comic Relief. In the manga, he is a fully developed supporting character with his share of comedy, but also much more serious moments.
  • Artificial Family Member: Kinako is a shikigami created by Benio who called him part of her family and Kinako in return loves her very much.
  • Canon Immigrant: He first appeared in the anime as an original addition created by the original author. He eventually was included in the manga, but on the Tsuchimikado Island, as shikigami can't visually materialize otherwise in the manga-verse.
  • Cartoon Creature: It's not clear what his species is supposed to be, but he does look a bit fox-like. As explained in the manga, he is a type of shikigami called Kitsuneko, which is, as the name implies... a mix of cat and fox.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: He can tell Benio when Kegare are near in the anime.
  • Familiar: He is explicitly referred to as Benio's familiar in the anime.
  • Flaming Hair: He has a flame in place of a tail.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: He starts yelling and attacking people who isn't Benio, usually Rokuro, over every little thing that annoys him.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Every time he appears, he's praising Benio and labelling everyone else as inferior in comparison to her.
  • Hot in Human Form: Although it's only shown once, he has a transformation that turns him into a Long-Haired Pretty Boy.
  • I Will Wait for You: Ever since Benio left the Tsuchimikado Island after her parents' death, Kinako has been waiting for her return. Kinako desperately protected Benio's old house so she has a place to call home when she comes back.
  • Insult of Endearment: He calls Rokuro "Imp" as part of their Vitriolic Best Buds dynamic.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: He's this to Benio in the anime. In the manga, he would be Rokuro's.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: The author found a way to fuse cats and foxes in a single chibi!
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: During important emotional scenes, he is usually nowhere to be seen in the anime. Averted in the manga.
  • Team Pet: He becomes the pet of the Enmadou Household after Rokuro gains more followers.
  • Undying Loyalty: Kinako was the only member of the Adashino household who refused to leave after Yuuto's crimes caused everyone in the island to scorn their family name. Specifically, he's loyal to his creator Benio and desperately wants to make sure she has a place to call home when she finally returns to the island.
  • Vocal Dissonance: The voice of Roy would be the last thing you would expect to come out of a Ridiculously Cute Critter's mouth.

At 14 years old

Originally Mayura Otomi. As the granddaughter of the head of the Seika Dorm for exorcists, Mayura often went to play with the children of the Hinatsuki dorm and befriended Rokuro there. She shows concern over Rokuro going back to exorcism because she saw how badly traumatized he was by the Tragedy of Hinatsuki, but she accepts his decision. She also befriends Benio, although she's somewhat jealous of her budding romance with her childhood friend.

Although she lives as an ordinary person, Mayura's father is one of the Twelve Guardians. After being saved by Rokuro and Benio, Mayura gains the resolve to become an exorcist herself to help her friends. Two years later, Mayura inherits her father's shikigami Byakko. She joins Rokuro when he moves to the Tsuchimikado Island and is welcomed into her father's household. She becomes the new Amawaka family head and replaces her father as a member of the Twelve Guardians.
  • Accidental Pervert: She walks in on a naked Shimon while entering a gym locker room.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Mayura is introduced until the sixth chapter of the manga. In the anime, however, she appears near the start of the very first episode.
  • Barrier Warrior: Her ability with barriers far exceeds any other ability she has.
  • Battle Couple: With Shimon. After she masters control over the White Tiger, Mayura and Shimon prove to be an effective team in battle. Four years later, they're well on their way to becoming a romantic couple.
  • Beta Couple: With Shimon. As two of Rokuro's and Benio's closest friends, they're the other potential couple that gets the most focus in the manga. They even have a light novel dedicated to their relationship after Mayura moves to the Tsuchimikado Island.
  • Betty and Veronica: In the early part of the manga, Mayura plays the Betty to Benio's Veronica. Mayura is Rokuro's childhood friend with a long-held crush on him that he's completely oblivious of. She initially gets jealous of Rokuro's Tsundere arranged fiancée Benio, but the Love Triangle is abandoned early on because Mayura completely gives up on Rokuro once she understands she doesn't stand a chance against Benio.
  • Boob-Based Gag: Mayura's unusually large chest is a source of humor, such as hitting the high jump vault with them.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Benio expresses envy over Mayura's large breasts.
  • Can't Catch Up: Eventually she does start training to be an onmyouji, but by that time Rokuro and Benio have a lot more skill and power so Mayura ends up feeling inadequate at being unable to help her friends.
  • Childhood Friends: She has been friends with Rokuro since childhood, since she often went to play at Hinatsuki. She wanted a Childhood Friend Romance at first, but gives up on it because of Rokuro's love for Benio.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She gets jealous of Benio and Sayo when she sees them with Rokuro, and actually hits Rokuro upon learning that he lives together with Benio. Eventually, she accepts the fact that Rokuro loves Benio, but the moment she sees Suzu all over Rokuro, Mayura goes ballistic.
  • D-Cup Distress: Her ample bust size gets her uncomfortable stares from males and her chest feels heavy when she runs.
  • Declaration of Protection:
    • Mayura eventually decides that her reason to fight is to protect those she cares about. This is what makes her capable of hosting the White Tiger spirit, whose strength is based on protecting others.
    • She states this was her reason to come to the Tsuchimikado island, as her goal is coming into equal footing to Rokuro, so she can protect him, and feels unworthy to be the next head of Amawaka clan. Yuzuru, who harbored unrequited love for Seigen, told her it's okay to accept the position and use it as stepping stone for her goal, as her end goal is after all protecting, the goal of Amawaka clan and the Byakko himself.
  • Determinator: Her fight with Higano is terribly one sided, but Mayura still keeps standing up to him even after her power-up wore off.
  • Dude Magnet: As an adult, Mayura has attracted a few suitors who want her hand in marriage.
  • Expy: In terms of character design, she closely resembles Ichiko Sakura, the protagonist of the author's early manga Good Luck Girl!.
  • Face–Monster Turn: She gets turned into a fallen Kegare by Yuuto. Luckily, Rokuro and Benio undo the transformation with Resonance.
  • Fish out of Water: She has the power of an exorcist, which is not the same as actually living like them or understanding what they do. She prefers her ordinary school life.
  • The Gift: Mayura has a large amount of spiritual powers, but unlike Rokuro and Benio, she isn't an exorcist when the series begins. According to her father if he had raised her as an exorcist from the beginning even Benio would not be as strong as her. This gets downplayed after the first Time Skip; during her fight with Higano, he states that while her level of raw power is exceptional, it is only when compared to the mainland. On the island, people need to have her level of power at a minimum just to survive.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: She embarrassingly denies it when her father suggests she and Shimon should get married after Rokuro and Benio, claiming they're Just Friends.
  • Her Own Worst Enemy: Seigen and Shimon point out the one thing keeping Mayura from reaching her full potential as an exorcist is her self-doubt and lack of resolve.
  • Heroic Lineage: Her father is one of the most powerful exorcists on the planet.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: She manages to become an exorcist in a very short amount of time, but because she constantly compares herself to Rokuro and Benio, she feels she suffers from Can't Catch Up.
  • Hopeless Suitor: To Rokuro. Even though she doesn't want to give up easily, Rokuro only sees her as a friend and he's already destined to marry Benio. By the end of the 16 year old arc, Mayura has accepted Rokuro can only be happy with Benio, but she has yet to get him over even four years later. After Rokuro and Benio get married, Mayura starts to think Shimon is the man who can help her move on.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: She admits she will always harbor feelings for Rokuro, but all she wants is for him to be happy, even if it's with Benio instead of her.
  • Insecure Love Interest: She has a habit of unfavorably comparing herself to those who seek Rokuro's affection.
  • Instant Expert:
    • Zig-zagged, as she becomes an exorcist in an extremely short amount of time, but it is shown to be through a rigorous training regiment. Even after two years, she still has very little battle experience, and her father notes that she doesn't have much of a killer instinct.
    • She Discussed it with Byakko when he commented that her father's style was more refined. She tells him it's the first time, she won't equal her father anytime soon.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Her Kegare form has two normal arms and three monstrous arms growing out of her waist.
  • Nom de Mom: At the beginning, Mayura uses her mother's surname Otomi because her father left the family. However, unlike other examples, she doesn't resent her father. She does change her surname to Amawaka after succeeding Seigen as the family head.
  • Patient Childhood Love Interest: To Rokuro. At the beginning of the story, they have known each other for eight years, and it's implied that her crush on him dates all the way back to childhood. Once she sees how important Rokuro and Benio are to each other, however, Mayura quietly gives up on Rokuro and wishes him happiness with Benio.
  • Reluctant Warrior: She fights only because the threat is so great that she has to. This shows in her ability- which is diligently honed but nowhere near the level of her actual potential. This is what makes her capable of hosting the White Tiger spirit, whose strength is based on protecting others.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She eventually develops feelings for Shimon due to him being a good and supportive friend to her.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She looks identical to her mother, just younger and with shorter hair. As a young adult, there's no visual difference between her and her mother anymore.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Over the two-year time skip, she becomes a exorcist. She eventually gains the same power as her father, which allows her to go toe-to-toe with a Basara on her first mission.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: With Shimon. After the second Time Skip, even they have noticed their mutual attraction, but both get embarrassed and awkward when Mayura starts considering Shimon as a potential marriage partner.
  • Wacky Marriage Proposal: She gives a really awkward proposal to Shimon by asking him if he could help her forget about Rokuro. Shimon understands what she means, but gets too embarrassed to give an answer.
  • Wolverine Claws: After inheriting the power of the White Tiger from her father, Mayura gains huge claw-like weapons that covers her entire arm, and attacks by making large slashing attacks, which is capable of slicing apart rocks and the ground itself.

    Seigen Amawaka
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/seigen_anime_design.png

Voiced By: Jun'ichi Suwabe (Japanese), Doug Erholtz (English)

A powerful exorcist who is one of the Twelve Guardians. He is also the personal trainer of many exorcist including Rokuro, Ryougo, Yuuto, and Mayura. He is also Mayura's father.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the manga, his hair is black with green tips. In the anime, the colors are the same, but reversed.
  • An Arm and a Leg: He loses his right arm in his battle with Yuuto. This forces Seigen to step down from his position as one of the Twelve Guardians.
  • Berserk Button: In the chibi series, talking smack about Yukari is a good way to make him angry.
  • Breakout Character: He was given his own spin-off manga that details his past, especially how he met his wife.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Seigen, who is tormented by guilt for his past actions as an assassin, meets and falls in love with Yukari, the one who came to help Seigen after she sees his sad eyes in their first meeting.
  • Childhood Friends: He went to middle school with Arima, Narumi and Arata.
  • The Confidant: When Rokuro is going through a Heroic BSoD after Benio transforms into Great Yin and is taken away by the Basara, Seigen goes to see him. However, Seigen doesn't give him a pep talk like expected, but simply hears out Rokuro's troubles until Rokuro regains the will to fight in order to get Benio back.
  • Dirty Business: Back in his youth, he was a member of the "Ritsu", a special squad of exorcists who serve as guardians of Tsuchimikado Island, tasked with killing fellow exorcists infected with "Jugen Monoimi", a form of The Corruption that drives them mad. He's not too happy with such a position.
  • Disappeared Dad: He tries to be this, but his family understands why he stays away, and Mayura even says he will be welcome back when his job is done. After he is forced to retire, he begins living with Mayura and her mother again.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: He has small bags under his eyes, giving him the look of an insomniac. In fact, he is insomniac. His job as an assassin made him feel so guilty he could rarely get good sleeps in the night, according to Yuzuru.
  • Henpecked Husband: The author's sketches and the anime heavily implies this. Examples including when Rokuro goes complaining about what Benio is cooking to the inhabitants of Seiko Dormitory, he just told Rokuro to suck it up. Sketches where he and Yukari have an argument show that it would end with his face clawed. Of course it didn't go unlampshaded, and who did it didn't get away with it.
Rokuro: She keep making the same dish for the entire week! Can you believe that?!
Seigen: If you're a man, shut up and eat what's served on the table.
Ryougo: Listen to the experienced man, Rokuro!
Atsushi: Could it be... That he's henpecked?
  • Hitman with a Heart: In his younger days, he was the leader of a group of assassins that specialized in killing fellow exorcists that broke the law of the Tsuchimikado Island. Seigen hated it and felt so guilt over killing people that he had nightmares which caused his insomnia.
  • Idiot Hair: He has a cowlick that stands out from his head.
  • The Insomniac: He rarely sleeps because he feels more at ease staying awake than having nightmares about the people he killed.
  • Insult of Endearment: Seigen calls Rokuro "Shrimp", but given their relationship, it's likely meant as an affectionate nickname instead of an insult.
  • Intimate Healing: Invoked by Yukari when they go on their first honeymoon together as she wanted to get him to relax. When they get to the open air bath he awkwardly and embarrassingly tries to politely refuse her advances, however, Yukari won't have it.
Yukari: Now it's my turn...to give your body a thorough scrub(every inch from top to bottom).
Seigen: [looks away]...No thank you, I-
Yukari: Don't be shy~ after all tonight we skip the formalities❤.
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: The main reason why he divorces Yukari as he didn't want the dangers of his job to affect her and Mayura. Fortunately, Yukari doesn't take this hard.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He can be gruff and difficult, but he does care a lot about his students and daughter.
  • Longing Look: After first spending many days with Yukari on Tsuchimakado Island he later gives one to her as he watches her inspecting a flower.
  • My Greatest Failure: Seigen feels guilty over not noticing Yuuto's true evil nature earlier since the Hinatsuki Tragedy could have been prevented if he had done so.
  • Naked Freak-Out: Subverted. Unlike Yukari, who is freaking out when they go to the open air bath, he doesn't care in the slightest about being in his birthday suit in front of her. He instead teases Yukari's insecurities at the time by offering to wash her back as a joking payback for making him go on a honeymoon. He embarrassingly "regrets" this in the end when she takes charge and overcomes her initial insecurities.
  • Papa Wolf: It would not be the best idea to target Mayura when he is around.
  • Shower of Love: Played with. Instead of in the shower it's heavily implied that they do it in the open air bath.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: He has no patients for half-assed effort, you either do it or die. Even his own daughter is still subject to this when she starts training.
  • Stern Teacher: To the point most of his students are terrified of him.
  • The Worf Effect: What is the most obvious way to tell how powerful Yuuto has become? Seigen can't even leave a scratch on him even after getting serious.
  • Wolverine Claws: Using the power of the White Tiger, Seigen enchants his glove to turn it into a huge white claw.

    Yuzuru Amawaka
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuzuru_amawaka.jpg

An exorcist from the Amawaka House. She is Seigen Amawaka's cousin who is 5 years younger than him.

  • Blemished Beauty: She has a vertical scar going across her missing left eye, but is fairly attractive otherwise.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Even though she loved Seigen, she never stood a chance against Yukari.
  • Kissing Cousins: She had feelings for her older cousin Seigen, but she kept them in the bottom of her heart.
  • Satellite Character: We don't know much about her beyond her relation to Seigen and Mayura.

Ikaruga Household

    Shimon Ikaruga
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shimon_anime_design.png
At 16 years old
Click here to see him at 18 years old

Voiced By: Kaito Ishikawa (Japanese), Johnny Yong Bosch (English)

A child prodigy who despite only being 2 years older than Rokuro has attained a rank among the Twelve Guardians. He bears the name of Suzaku.

  • Accidental Pervert: In a side story, a naked Mayura clings to him after a shikigami interrupts her bath, to the embarrassment of both.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In the manga, Shimon is introduced after Rokuro and Benio's first battle against Yuuto. He gets to show up quite a bit earlier in the anime.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Tenma slices off his right leg during their tournament match.
  • Artificial Limbs: He replaces his missing right leg with a prosthetic.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Pretty good at figuring out how spells and techniques work, then using the knowledge to his advantage.
  • Battle Couple: With Mayura. They have lots of Ship Tease together and they often team up in battle after Mayura joins the Twelve Guardians. The two form a great combination.
  • Beta Couple: With Mayura. Since the first Time Skip, they have been build up as the second Official Couple in the manga. Their relationship growth is much slower than Rokuro and Benio's, but they have it easier because they don't have to worry about secret powers awakening and forcing them apart.
  • BFS: By using his talisman, Shimon changes his sword into a powerful giant red and yellow Flaming Sword that he uses to exorcise Kegare.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He's incredibly protective of his adoptive sister "Chiiko" and hopes to end the war with the Kegare so that the spirits that she houses will leave before their power kills the young girl.
  • Child Prodigy: Shimon has been called an exorcist genius from a young age. He mastered every exorcism technique at 11, was promoted to platoon leader at 12 and became one of the Twelve Guardians at 14.
  • Childhood Friends: Shimon has known Tenma since elementary school and he's the closest thing Tenma has to a friend.
  • The Comically Serious: He's so duty-driven that he can't have a sense of humor to save his life, or takes things way too seriously. Like his test fight with Rokuro, where he analyzes exactly what Roku did, only for the latter to say he totally got it wrong. Shimon takes this completely at face value in embarrassment. The one time he actually cracks a joke later in the series, it's with a completely straight face and has Mayura and Keiji freaking out.
  • Covered with Scars: When Mayura walks in on him naked, it's shown that he has scars all over his body.
  • Determinator: Shimon is just as stubborn as Rokuro. Even after his leg gets cut off, Shimon wanted to keep fighting Tenma in their tournament duel.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Shimon has Mayura and Rokuro hold onto him to fly out of the way of a pile of falling rubble. Mayura is scared of heights and asks him to put them down, so he looks at her by reflex... Only to realize her chest is pressing onto him. He reddens and starts sweating, and you can see his flight pattern getting all loopy before they crash. Whoops.
  • Drone Deployer: He can send small swords to attack his foes of which he is one hundred percent in control of.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Tenma mocks him by calling him "Birdmaru", which Shimon hates.
  • Flight: One of the few exorcist capable of real flight.
  • Handicapped Badass: Losing one leg doesn't stop him from pulling a Big Damn Heroes to save Mayura and co. from gigantic Kegare in the depths of Magano.
  • Happily Adopted: His adoptive father and siblings all love him very much and consider him a true part of the family.
  • Has a Type: A q&a on the official website reveals that Shimon's favorite type of girl is an intelligent, quiet, humble, and modest woman.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: He wears headphones to illustrate his aloof personality.
  • Improbable Age: Shimon is one of the strongest exorcists on the planet at only 18 years old.
  • Insecure Love Interest: He thinks a woman like Mayura, the powerful family head of an high-ranking family, is out of his league as he's just an adopted son from a very small branch family. He also knows Mayura had a crush on Rokuro for a long time and doubts he can take his place in her heart.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Shimon may not be the most pleasant guy when you first meet him, but he will give his all to protect his family and friends.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": Shimon doesn't even try to hide how much he admires Seigen, particularly in the anime where he keeps blushing from just having a conversation with Seigen.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: After the second Time Skip, he has let the back of his hair grow past his shoulders.
  • Long-Range Fighter: His fighting style consists in him staying flying up in the air as he fires enchanted swords at his opponents. If his opponent can somehow reach his body up in the air, Shimon is at a great disadvantage. He does try avoiding Crippling Overspecialization by creating a charm to wield a BFS, which his only close-range attack method so far.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He gets a lot of focus when Mayura walks on him in the bathroom, showing his chiseled chest and bare butt.
  • Naked First Impression: The first time he meets Mayura, she walks in on him changing after a bath.
  • Nephewism: Shimon was orphaned at three years old and his uncle, the head of the Ikaruga household, adopted him.
  • Razor Wings: Given Suzaku's wings are made of swords, they are this by default.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Shimon wears a purple scarf at all times, which helps him look cooler when he's destroying Kegare.
  • Second Love: After Rokuro marries Benio, Mayura admits to Shimon she's still having trouble completely getting over him. Shimon tells her he wants her to marry someone who can make her happy, so Mayura asks him to be the one who helps her forget about Rokuro.
  • Sleep Deprivation: Played for laughs. After they get stranded on one of the training islands, Shimon and Mayura end up sleeping next to each other in a shed. He's so nervous that he can barely get enough sleep every night while Mayura is sleeping soundly. He lampshades this himself.
Shimon: [sleeping face up, hands folded]...I can't sleep. I can't sleep...at all!!
  • Stern Teacher: He doesn't go easy on Mayura when training her, that's for sure. That said, he claims his training regime is a walk in the park compared to what Seigen put him and his other students through.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: He's very serious and cool, but has an obvious soft spot for those he cares about, mainly his adopted sister Sayo, and is kind to those who earn his respect such as Rokuro. He also grows particularly attached to Mayura.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: With Mayura. They develop an attraction to each other as they train together and support each other. After four years, they're somewhat aware of their mutual feelings, but get too flustered when the idea of becoming a couple comes up.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Tenma. They annoy and tease each other whenever they interact, but Shimon is one of the few people who can become a true friend to Tenma.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: One of Shimon's motives for becoming one of the best exorcists was to be acknowledged by his mentor Seigen. Shimon resents the fact that Seigen always paid more attention to Rokuro in the mainland.

    Sayo Ikaruga
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sayo_ikaruga.png

Shimon's younger sister, though actually cousin. She houses one of the most powerful spirits, the Kitsune Kuzu-no-Ha who mothered Abe no Seimei, as well as Kuzu-no-Ha's 48 retainers in her body.

  • Adorably Precocious Child: Sayo is only 11 years old but tends to act much older, especially around Rokuro.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Shimon calls her "Chiiko".
  • Animal Battle Aura: Combined with Shaping Your Attacks. After the second Time Skip, Sayo has gained enough control over Kuzu-no-Ha's power to manifest a giant Kitsune aura and use it to fight.
  • Bedmate Reveal: Sayo likes to sneak into Rokuro's bed, which leads to Benio and Mayura trying to beat him up.
  • The Cameo: She's briefly seen in the anime's "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue when Shimon returns home.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Sayo is at odds with Benio because the latter is the "wife" of her "prince" Rokuro.
  • Damsel in Distress: She gets captured by two Basara who intend to devour her spiritual power. This causes Rokuro, Benio, Shimon and Mayura to go on a rescue mission to save Sayo.
  • Fighting from the Inside: Sayo's consciousness resists Kuzu-no-Ha's possession to prevent the latter from killing Benio after Ashiya Doman is summoned by Sayo performing the Enchanted Guardian ritual.
  • Fille Fatale: She's very aggressive in her attempts to get in bed with Rokuro for an eleven-year-old.
  • Heroic Willpower: In Chapter 79, a Kegare casts a curse on Sayo that preys on her jealousy of Benio and resentment of her fate as Kuzu-no-Ha's host to push her into trying to kill Benio. Sayo manages to fight off the influence of the curse because she knows she isn't the type of person to blame and hurt others for her own misfortune.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Sayo has no chances of ever getting together with Rokuro because he only loves Benio.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Ever since she was a little child, she wanted to be free of being the vessel of Kuzu-no-Ha and live an ordinary life alongside her brother.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: After getting over her Clingy Jealous Girl tendencies, Sayo admits she knows that even if she had a chance with Rokuro, she would make him unhappy because of her short lifespan. Once she fights off a curse that makes her try to kill Benio, Sayo tearfully congratulates Benio for getting engaged to Rokuro and asks her to make him happy.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Hijirimaru stabs her right through the chest. Thankfully, she gets saved.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Sayo coughs up blood after performing the Ascertainment Ritual on Rokuro, which is the first sign of the fatal effects of being the vessel of Kuzu-no-Ha.
  • It Sucks to Be the Chosen One: Being the host of Kuzu-no-Ha means Sayo's body is incapable of housing that much spiritual power for long and she won't live past twenty. Sayo pointed out others called her a sacrifice to Kuzu-no-Ha.
  • Jerkass to One: She acts like a jerk around Benio because she's so jealous of the latter's engagement to Rokuro. Sayo is friendly enough towards everyone else, as seen in her interactions with her brothers, Mayura, and Arimori.
  • Kick the Dog: Sayo badmouths Benio in front of Rokuro and accuses her of wanting to marry the other Twin Star Exorcist just for the sake of restoring the Adashino's family name after they fell into disgrace because of Yuuto. Rokuro gets pissed at Sayo for this and even Shimon tells her she went too far.
  • Kimono Is Traditional: She wears a kimono when she's at the Ikaruga household.
  • Like Parent, Like Spouse: Or Like Brother, Like Spouse in her case. She apparently likes Rokuro's personality because he and her adopted brother Shimon share similar qualities.
  • Love Before First Sight: Sayo fell for Rokuro by seeing pictures of him through the two years before she officially met him in person.
  • Many Spirits Inside of One: Sayo's Enchanted Guardian is Kuzu-no-Ha, the Kitsune who was the mother of Abe no Seimei. In addition, the host of Kuzu-no-Ha also has to be the vessel of the forty-eight retainers who worship and protect Kuzu-no-Ha. Benio thinks no human would be able to withstand having that many powerful spirits inside their body.
  • The Nicknamer: Sayo calls Rokuro "Roku", Benio "Beni" and "Mayu" for Mayura.
  • Not Afraid to Die: She claims to the Basara that she isn't afraid to be killed by them because she will die in a few years anyway.
  • Possession Burnout: The spirits she houses are so powerful that they're killing her and it's unlikely she will live long enough to see her twentieth birthday.
  • Power Tattoo: She has tattoos all over her body to seal her immense spiritual power and keep it from destroying her.
  • Precocious Crush: She's 11 and has a big crush on Rokuro who is 16.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: She wears black tights with her casual dresses, which is fitting for the daughter of one of the most prominent exorcist clans.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: After the second timeskip, Sayo wears a scarf similar to Shimon's around her neck as part her exorcist gear.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: For her safety, Sayo was never allowed to leave the Ikaruga mansion until Arima sent her to the mainland to test the Twin Star Exorcists. Understandably, just walking around the town with Rokuro is like a dream come true for her.
  • Shipper on Deck: She supports ShimonxMayura.
  • Stark Naked Sorcery: During Rokuro's and Benio's Ascertainment Rituals, Sayo strips naked when she summons the Twin Star Exorcists' Enchanted Guardians, Abe no Seimei and Ashiya Doman.
  • Thinks Like a Romance Novel: According to Shimon, Sayo thinks of herself as an imprisoned princess and Rokuro is the prince who freed her by giving her the chance to travel to the mainland and see the outside world.
  • Took a Level in Badass: During the second Time Skip, Sayo spent three years going through exorcist training in order to develop better control over Kuzu-no-Ha's overwhelming power and make her body more suited for hosting so many spirits. Shimon is impressed that Sayo managed to become strong enough to participate in a battle at Magano in the span of a few years.
  • Yandere: Played around in Chapter 79. It's first Played for Laughs when her reaction to hearing about Rokuro's official engagement to Benio is having him kidnapped to then keep him Bound and Gagged, and threaten to pull a Murder-Suicide so she can be with Rokuro in the afterlife. Then, she falls under the influence of a curse that makes her want to seriously kill Benio for being the woman Rokuro loves. Ultimately, it's subverted as Sayo frees herself from the curse and accepts that only Benio can make Rokuro happy.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: All the hosts of Kuzu-no-Ha and her forty-eight retainers die young. Shimon speculates Sayo has only four to five years left to live unless he finds a way to get the guardians out of her body.

    Keiji Ikaruga
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/keiji_ikaruga.png

Shimon's and Sayo's older brother.

  • Big Brother Instinct: He's super pissed at Tenma for cutting off his little brother's leg.
  • Dual Wielding: He duel wields a pair of swords in combat.
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Gunki. They considered each other rivals and close friends. After Gabura kills Gunki, Keiji helps in Gabura's defeat to avenge Gunki.
  • Nice Guy: He's a very kind and good-natured guy without a single mean bone in his body.
  • Revenge: In the final battle, he helps Shizuru and Hibari finish off Gabura because he also wants to avenge Gunki's death at Gabura's hands.
  • Shipper on Deck: Like Sayo, Keiji supports Shimon's potential romance with Mayura.

Ioroi Household

    Narumi Ioroi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/narumi_anime_design.png

Voiced By: Masaya Takatsuka (Japanese), Kyle Hebert (English)

Patriarch of the Ioroi House and father of nine children. He represents Kochin of the Twelve Guardians.

  • Action Dad: He's one of the most powerful exorcists and the proud father of nine children.
  • Always with You: With his last breath, he promises his daughter he and her brothers will be watching over her.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parent: He spanks his daughter in front of everyone present for talking like a guy.
  • Badass Family: His exorcist squad is made of him and three of his children.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: He's loud, big, muscular and rowdy.
  • Bully Magnet: He was weak in spell power and body as a kid, which made him a target of bullying from other boys.
  • Childhood Friends: He was friends with Arima, Seigen and Arata in middle school.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: He can control the earth element with his own will with his Guardian Power.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: His wife thought they first met when Narumi drifted into her island when doing some training. When he asked her family to marry her, Narumi revealed he had met her once when they were children and he had actually come to her island to show her how big and strong he had become thanks to her encouragement.
  • Gentle Giant: He's one of the nicest Commanders and he towers over everyone.
  • Good Parents: He's a good and caring father to his nine children.
  • Happily Married: He loves his wife and children a lot.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Narumi is the tallest of the Twelve Guardians. Rokuro is surprised to see his wife is a tiny woman who barely reaches Narumi's waist.
  • I Got Bigger: He was very small when he was a child, but through a lot of training, he grew and now he towers over everyone.
  • Rescue Romance: His wife defended him from some bullies when they were children and he fell for her thanks to his words of encouragement.
  • Sacrificial Lion: He's the first of the Twelve Guardians to die just to make clear how much of a terrifying threat Gabura is.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: He's alive by the end of the anime storyline, but ends up dead in the manga.
  • Take Up My Sword: In his dying moments, he entrusts Kouchin to his daughter Shizuru and names her his successor in the Twelve Guardians.
  • Uptown Guy: Ioroi is one of the most influential families in the island and Narumi's wife Tamami was from a family without much spell power in one of the smaller islands.
  • Wanted a Gender-Conforming Child: He disapproves of his daughter Shizuru's tomboyish speech patterns and behavior.

    Shizuru Ioroi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shizuru_ioroi.png
At 17 years old
Click here to see her at 21 years old

The second daughter and fourth child of Narumi Ioroi. She eventually succeeds her father as Kochin of the Twelve Guardians.

  • Accidental Misnaming: Rokuro never gets her name right.
  • An Arm and a Leg: She loses her right forearm in the final fight against Gabura.
  • Berserk Button: Treating her like a woman is a quick way to piss her off.
  • Big Eater: She eats huge amounts of food.
  • Blemished Beauty: She has a large scar across her face, but still looks attractive.
  • The Cameo: She makes a brief appearance with her father in the anime's "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue.
  • Daddy's Girl: She greatly looks up to her father and decided to train to be an exorcist so she could fight by his side.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: After inheriting Kouchin from her father, Shizuru gains the ability to manipulate earth. In battle, she can create gigantic weapons or colossal golems out of the earth.
  • Embarrassing Rescue: Shizuru finds it humiliating to be saved by Rokuro during his first mission at the Tsuchimikado Island, because she believes the mainland's exorcists are naive weaklings.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She ties her hair up into a pair of twin-tails, just to make obvious she's a Tsundere.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Shizuru gains a small attraction towards Rokuro, but the girl meant to be with him is Benio. Since she always knew she never had a chance with him anyway, she quietly lets him go.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: She wants to be as strong as father and brothers so she can help them fight and people stop telling her to Stay in the Kitchen. This is what makes her the ideal candidate for hosting Kouchin due to the shikigami being empowered by the ambition to become stronger.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: She has eight siblings.
  • Rescue Romance: She develops a small crush on Rokuro after he saves her from a Kegare.
  • Scars Are Ugly: When her face was scarred during a battle against Kegare, Shizuru tried to convince herself it was a badge of honor, but she still cried when she saw her scar in the mirror. Her father and one of her older brothers also were distressed about her scarred face because girls with scars are seen as unattractive.
  • Sole Survivor: She was the only surviving member of her squad after they were wiped out by Gabura.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Despite the atrocities he committed, Shizuru can't help to feel sorry for Gabura after she discovers his tragic origins.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: She talks like a guy and hates to be treated like a woman. She still gets embarrassed and wonders what she should wear for her "date" with Rokuro that her brothers arranged for her.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She eventually becomes the new host of Kouchin and is able to fight Gabura on a more even ground with help from Sakura.
  • Tsundere: Harsh type. She's gruff and acts hostile towards Rokuro, calling him a weakling from the mainland. After he saves her, she blushes like crazy whenever he's around. But it's not like she likes him or anything!
  • You Killed My Father: She wants to kill Gabura to avenge her father and older brothers. In the final battle, she lands the finishing blow that finally kills Gabura.

Unomiya Household

    Tenma Unomiya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tenma_anime_design.png
At 17 years old
Click here to see him at 19 years old
Click here to see him at 23 years old

Voiced By: Hiro Shimono (Japanese), Michael Yurchak (English)

Patriarch of the Unomiya House. He bears the name of Kijin of the Twelve Guardians, noted to be "the most powerful" among them.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: According to Tenma, only Senri and the previous head of the Unomiya treated him normally. He even notes in the novel that, besides those two, the rest of his family didn’t treat him like a normal sibling. It comes to a head during the kijin ritual where they all decide to team up and kill him first because they didn't want to be a sacrifice for him as he already had so much potential and because they didn't really like him in the first place.
  • Animal Motifs: He was once portrayed as part squirrel in his chibi form when having a staring contest with Shimon.
  • Apathetic Student: He often came to school late or missed class because he wasn't interested in school.
  • An Arm and a Leg: He loses his left arm while shielding Rokuro from Yuuto's attack.
  • Artificial Limbs: After the second Time Skip, he has replaced his lost left leg with a prosthetic.
  • Badass Adorable: He shouldn't be underestimated for his girly appearance since he's the most powerful of the Twelve Guardians.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: This is the reason Tenma viewed his sister, Senri, so dearly as Shimon noticed. She was the only one, besides the previous Unomiya head, who treated him normally. However, when it turns out that it was an act.
  • Berserk Button: Downplayed and played for laughs. His reaction varies depending on the manga and anime but his chord is struck whenever someone mistakes him for a girl or being compared to looking like one either. Sukeno also has an extra of Tenma angrily yelling at the viewers who thought he was a girl while its downplayed in anime preview where he just tells Sae to shut up when she comments on his looks
Sae:Tenma, you're so cute, just like a girl!
    Tenma: [annoyed] Shut-up!
  • BFS: His main weapon in battle are large blades with the ability to grow to the size of a building.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves Rokuro from almost getting killed by a Kegare on his, Rokuro's, first mission in the magano realm at the island.
    • He does it again during the fight against Yuuto at the singularity point where he takes the blunt of Yuuto's blast in place of Rokuro.
  • Big Sister Worship: Despite his bad attitude, Tenma could never bring himself to go against anything his older sister Senri said. Her death affected him very badly because not only he killed her so he could inherit Kijin, she died blaming him for reducing her life to a sacrifice for his rise in power.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: His Mystic Gear replacea his lower right arm with a sword.
  • Born Winner: He was born with such great enchanted powers and natural abilities as an exorcist that he doesn't to cast spells to fight Kegare.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: While Tenma was a Child Prodigy and the strongest out of all the commanders, he hates training. According to his profile, it seems he'd rather just watch TV.
  • Broken Ace: Among the Twelve Guardians who are said to be the top exorcists, Tenma is labeled as the strongest with a latent power so great that talismans are useless to him. However, the cruel ritual he had to go through to inherit the most powerful shikigami left him with deep emotional scars and tortured by loneliness.
  • Celibate Hero: Justified. He always expected himself to die in battle, at the Singularity Point, so a relationship was the last thing on his mind plus the fact that he wasn't in the right place for a relationship either. It's later revealed, in a q&a, that he's only into dumplings/dango and powerful exorcists - most likely for fighting. Even when he first showed an implied physical attraction to Rokuro and Benio, after Rokuro reunites with Benio, it makes it clear that it's not his actual feelings that caused it but the feelings of all the yin stars lying dormant within him that are bursting with happiness that the twin stars are finally together.
Vol 20 - Question: What kind of person is Tenma attracted to?
Tenma: [answering] Huh? I'm into powerful exorcists and dango, and that's it.
  • Chick Magnet: Being head of the Unomiya's house and the strongest commander as well as good looks has gotten him many fangirls.
  • Child Prodigy: Even more so than Shimon. Tenma showed an incredible potential for exorcism from a very young age and he was able to fight Seigen to a draw at only seven years old.
  • Childhood Friends: He and Shimon went to elementary school together. While Tenma doesn't seem to consider himself Shimon's friend, Shimon is the person who puts the most effort in getting Tenma out of his isolation.
  • Comfort Food: Mitarashi Dango. Given his background its implied that dango is something that gives him genuine happiness despite his inner turmoil for all those years. It becomes a plot point in the future where he concludes that Mitarashi Dango is the number one on the list that he is fighting and living for.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: He didn't cut off Shimon's leg to be an asshole. Tenma had predicted Shimon would die during the mission to eliminate Yuuto. Since Shimon would never back down unless he was seriously injured, Tenma had no choice but to cripple him and ask him to watch over the Twin Star Exorcists in his place, since Tenma was fated to die in that battle too. Keiji is shocked Tenma went that far to make himself the bad guy in order to protect Shimon's life.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Given his power status and title as the strongest his battles with Kegare are this. This is averted with some battles with basaras and Yuuto.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: The Kijin ritual had his relatives, including his own sister, teaming up to kill him first, but he still ended up killing them all. Ever since then, Tenma has resigned himself to a painfully lonely existence where he can't bring himself to trust or get close to other people out of fear of losing them to betrayal and death again.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: In order to inherit the Kijin shikigami, candidates are automatically selected by a curse to fight to the death until only one survives. He ended up killng his sister figure who cursed him to forever be alone with her dying breath.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: The true identity of Kijin is the amalgamation of the past female Twin Stars that failed to give birth to the Prophesied child. This basically makes Tenma an artificial vessel of yin energy, which is why his powers are so overwhelmingly destructive. Despite this, Tenma is one of the good guys and becomes a very important ally to Rokuro.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: His face is so feminine-looking that Rokuro commented he would have mistaken Tenma for a girl if it wasn't for getting a Naked First Impression. Even then, when Rokuro finds out he and Tenma can use Resonance together, Rokuro jokes about Tenma being a second female Twin Star. Tenma punches him for that.
  • Exposition Beam: In chapter 36, he uses Telepathy to explain the creation of Magano to Rokuro.
  • Eye Scream: His left eye is injured while aiding Rokuro fight Yuuto.
  • Go Out with a Smile:
    • Subverted. Tenma expected to die when the singularity point came, during the battle with Yuuto, and subsequently protects Rokuro from a dangerous attack with a sad smile on his face, but he ends up surviving.
    • In chapter 127, Tenma really does die after using up all of his power to help kill Sakanashi. His soul appears to say goodbye to Shimon and Rokuro, smiling at them as he makes clear he has no regrets and is satisfied with his life despite his harsh childhood.
  • "Good Luck" Gesture: He gives a thumbs up to Fuguyo during her match with Miku after she winks at him. She has her heart stabbed out of her chest by the gesture while the rest of his fangirls aren't amused at her taking Tenma’s attention.
  • Hair Antennae: Exaggerated. He has about seven antennae sticking up from the top of his head. When he was a kid, he had a normal version with only two streaks of hair antennae. It's apparently a family trait.
  • Hair Intakes: His hair has a pair of intakes that vaguely look like cat ears.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Despite his apparent calm during his official manga appearances, at least two extras hint that he also has this. He seems to enjoy getting a rise out of Rokuro as well.
  • Hates Being Alone: He reflects on himself, in the Santen novel, where he acknowledges that he is very lonely and doesn't like to be alone.
  • Haughty "Hmph": When Senri interrupts the fight that was about to start between him and Shimon he begrudgingly stops and leaves much to Shimon’s surprise. Shimon takes note of how much Senri’s opinions mean to him to be able to get him to listen.
Senri: Stop it you two! Geez, you’re always fighting!
Shimon: Senri-san..
Tenma:[turns around and leaves] tch..
Shimon:[thinking] That guy... Senri-san's the one person he can't stand up against.
  • Hereditary Hairstyle: Implied. Sukeno states that the ahoge on Tenma's head is a result of bed hair. Interestingly enough, it seems that it is partly hereditary as well since the rest of his siblings and cousins all have separate strand(s)of hair sticking out from their head.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Tenma is left at the brink of death after the final battle against Sakanashi. He then uses the last bit of power he has left to create a barrier to protect Shimon, Mayura, Seigen and Arimori, giving up his life to allow them to escape safely from the Kegare lair.
  • High-Class Glass: After the second time skip, Tenma wears a monocle over his left eye.
  • Hope Is Scary:
    • When Shimon tells him that he'll be the strongest, and be at the top with him, and that he won't disappear (betray him or die) like the people in his past he rejects his notion with a howl as he is unable to accept it so easily given his past...
    • He later expressed these sentiments to Rokuro and telling him that he felt that everything was so hopeless to the point that he just wanted everything to end because he was too scared that nothing would change even if he wished for it.
Tenma: [to Rokuro] "I can't believe in anything...I don't want to believe in anything...not in exorcists...not in Tsuchimikado island"
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: He berates Rokuro for his unwillingness to cooperate with the twelve houses as well as his impatience, arrogance, and underestimation of the difficulty of the eventual Yuuto operation, however, Tenma himself is very arrogant, impatient, and has a bit of a loner mentality to those who know him. That said, he was right about Rokuro underestimating how hard the eventual confrontation will be considering that Magano on the island is nowhere near the same atmosphere as on the mainland. Rokuro finds out the hard way.
  • Improbable Age: He became the Unomiya family head when he was ten years old.
  • I Warned You: Takes great pleasure in laughing at Rokuro's helplessness during his first mission in Magano on the island seeing as he wanted Rokuro to stop getting ahead of himself in regards to the Yuuto Operation. He later rubs it in his face in the hospital.
Tenma:[before the Magano mission] Saying you'll "settle things things with Ijika Yuuto". You'll see how delusional you were to say that...
Tenma: [after the Magano mission] But you're seriously lame! You and Ijika Yuuto grew up together right? That guy's become a threat that every exorcist is watching out for. And yet, you couldn't do a single thing in Magano and almost died! I'm surprised you're able to say "I'm going to settle things with Ijika Yuuto" like that.
  • I Work Alone: Justified. He is extremely powerful and his huge attacks might get his comrades hurt so they stay out of the way. However, he has always had this mentality since he was a child. He even brushes off Shimon's attempts to work together in the novel. This eventually gets subverted when he chooses to work with Shimon, for the first time in Magano much to Seigen's surprise in the novel.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He acts arrogant and quite rude, also enjoying to make fun of people. All in all, Tenma is a great guy at heart.
  • Laughing Mad: After his family betrays him during the Kijin ritual, in which he ends up killing all of them, and with Senri cursing him to be alone, and showing that she doesn't care about him, he ends up breaking down horribly at the river with Shimon watching nearby.
  • Lightning Glare: When bumping heads with Shimon over who is watching Rokuro for his first exploration in the magano realm at the island they use this on eachother.
  • Lonely at the Top: He became the host of the strongest shikigami and the most powerful exorcist in the island by killing his own relatives in a There Can Be Only One ritual. His own sister told him as part of a Dying Curse that he's doomed to stand on the top forever alone and in pain with no one to understand him.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He has long hair that goes along his feminine looks. In the manga, he has cut it short after the first Time Skip. After the second Time Skip, however, his hair is long again and he ties it back in a ponytail.
  • Many Spirits Inside of One: The true identity of Tenma's shikigami Kijin is all the previous female Twin Stars that died in despair and agony.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: Originally, both his eyes were purple. His left eye turned green after he became the host of the strongest shikigami, Kijin that is the amalgamation of all the dead female Twin Stars that failed to become Great Yin.
  • Mr. Exposition: He takes the time to sneak into Rokuro's dream to show him the history of Abe no Seimei, the King of the Kegare and how Magano and the island were created.
  • Naked First Impression: First meets Rokuro in the bathhouse.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: He is too scared to make close connections and, as a result, cut himself off from people because he doesn't want to be betrayed like in the case of Senri and the rest of his family when it was revealed that they made a pact to kill him first in the Kijin ritual.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Played for laughs. During a team mission with Benio, Rokuro, and Shimon, to investigate a tower, he tries to destroy the tower with a huge attack from the outside only to find out that it barely has any effect as it has a strong barrier. This effectively alerts all the Kegare in the area of their presence which Shimon calls him out on. Rokuro then points out that his attack made a small hole in the tower which they can get through. Tenma then tries to play it off as his plan all along which they obviously don’t believe.
  • The Nicknamer: He has a nickname for everyone he knows. The nicknames he gave the main characters and Twelve Guardians are listed in a Q&A at one manga volume.
  • No Place for a Warrior: Tenma survives the first Singularity point against all the odds and for the first time in his life, he can experience a time of peace during the next four years. Yet, Tenma finds this newfound normalcy "bland" because he had always lived in a hell full of death and misery where his only expectation was dying in the battlefield during the Singularity.
  • One-Hit Kill: During the Kegare invasion he kills several large Kegare with one strike.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: His attacks are large in scale and pretty lethal. Its one of the main reasons why people from the unomiya house keep their distance from him when he fights as they could get caught in the attack or hinder his fighting capabilities.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Tenma is quite small for his age (19), even shorter than Rokuro, standing at 5'1". However he is the "most powerful" out of all the Twelve Guardians; easily splitting mountain in half with just a wave of his sword.
  • Powered by a Forsaken Child: His shikigami Kijin is powered by the curses of the Unomiya candidates Tenma killed before inheriting it. Furthermore, Kijin represents the curses fueled by the torment of all the dead female Twin Stars. Because of this, Kijin is the most powerful shikigami of the Guardians and her host Tenma is next to invincible. However, after the first Singularity Point, Tenma notices he can't feel the despair of the previous female Twin Stars anymore because the current Great Yin has found true love and happiness with Great Yang.
  • Raised as a Host: The children of the Unomiya family are trained and made kill each other until there is only one left to inherit Kijin, a shikigami that is actually the amalgamation of curses from the previous female Twin Stars that died before the Prophesied child could be born.
  • The Rival: He is this to Shimon ever since they were children.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: Whenever Tenma is fighting, he uses sound effects like 'whoosh!' or 'kapow!'. In the anime, he uses 'Blammo!' instead.
  • Seers: He has a prophecy spell which he uses to foresee the outcomes of the battles. This spell also predicted that Shimon would die in the Singularity point, which is why Tenma thought he had no choice but cut off his leg to keep him out of danger. After the second Time Skip, he states to have lost this power.
  • Sibling Murder: The Kodoku ritual that decides the next host of Kijin requires the winner to kill all the other candidates of the Unomiya family. The last one Tenma killed during the ritual was his older sister Senri.
  • Skinny Dipping: One of Sukeno's art features Tenma swimming in a lake at night in his birthday suit.
  • Smug Smiler: He's smiling almost constantly. In a distinctly smug manner. He also seems to like taunting Rokuro.
  • Snot Bubble: During the announcement ceremony of the Haredare games, Tenma is seen alongside the Twelve Commanders sleeping...while standing up sporting a comedic snot bubble and drool coming down from his mouth. Miku is not amused.
  • Storm of Blades: After the second Time Skip, Tenma has developed an attack based on Shimon's techniques where he splits his BFS into many smaller blades and throws them at his opponent.
  • Stubborn Hair: According to the series' official website, all of Tenma's Hair Antennae is a result of bed head that he can't fix. Strangely enough, this seems to be the same for the rest of his family.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: No sooner than his second introduction, he is shown eating more than seven boxes of mitarashi dango and making a deal with one of the Twelve Guardians to give him a total years worth of mitarashi dango in exchange for taking out a few Kegare. The author frequently draws many sketches of Tenma eating mitarashi dango on his twitter/pixiv page. After the second Time Skip, when Tenma is going through a brief existential crisis as he wonders what he wants to fight for, the first thing he thinks of is mitarashi dango.
  • Verbal Tic: He often says "hmmmm?" whenever he is talking.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Shimon. Their back and forth banter/rivalry has been the basis of their relationship since the beginning and, as of now, Tenma considers Shimon to be the second most important thing in his life as Shimon is one of his only true friends. Not that either of them would admit that they're friends.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • He defends Rokuro and calls out on Miku's actions toward Rokuro after she expected punishment for Rokuro's actions when he pinched one of her house members for trash-talking about Benio and her old house.
    • He is subject to this trope, when he snaps and slices off Shimon's leg. The entire stadium is horrified.
  • Worth Living For: Played for Laughs. As part of his Character Development to find his reason to live and fight again after the Singularity Point, in which he all but expected to die there, he concludes that DANGO is the number one thing in his life worth living and fighting for.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: After he became the host of Kijin at a young age, Arima foretold Tenma would die in a Heroic Sacrifice saving the Twin Star Exorcists during the great battle at Magano. Tenma decided that wasn't a bad way to die and didn't try to fight his fate. However, Tenma ends up surviving.

    Senri Unomiya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unomiya_senri.png

The older sister of Tenma. She died at the ritual that decides the next host of Kijin.

  • Broken Pedestal: It's shown that Tenma really respected and loved Senri. Shimon even noted that Senri was the only one that Tenma couldn't stand up against. This goes south during the Kodoku ritual where Senri's true colors are revealed in which she shows spite, bitterness, and envy towards Tenma.
  • Death of a Child: She died when she was merely twelve years old.
  • Dies Wide Open: She died with her eyes open.
  • Dying Curse: With her last breath, she condemned Tenma to spend the rest of his life isolated and unable to be understood by anyone.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wore her hair in pigtails that made her look very cute.
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal: She seemed like a sweet and loving sister to Tenma at first. The moment Tenma killed her during the Kodoku, however, Senri revealed how much she resented her younger brother because she always knew she was nothing but a sacrifice for him to become the strongest exorcist in the island. She spent her final moments taunting Tenma about how he would live tortured by loneliness and then would go to hell when he died. Tenma obviously didn't take it well when Senri revealed how she really felt about him.
  • Posthumous Character: She died when Tenma was a kid and only exists in the plot as a part of Tenma's backstory.
  • Successful Sibling Syndrome: Her little brother was the most skilled and talented out of the Kijin candidates. When Tenma killed her at the Kodoku, Senri expressed how she secretly harbored a grudge toward Tenma because she was in his shadow her entire life and then was killed by him so he could inherit the strongest shikigami.

    Subaru Mitejima
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/subaru_anime_design.png

Voiced By: Miyuki Sawashiro (Japanese), Kate Higgins (English)

Matriarch of the Mitejima House. She bears the name of Tenko of the Twelve Guardians.

  • Accent Adaptation: The English dub translates her Kansai accent into a speech pattern reminiscent of a traditional Southern Belle.
  • Action Girl: She's a member of a group formed by the most powerful exorcists in the world. In the anime, she is shown to be able to easily take down a horde of Kegare.

  • Eyes Always Shut: She almost always keeps her eyes closed.
  • Florence Nightingale Effect: Years ago, Subaru found a weakened and dismembered Gaja, who had escaped from her family's Kegare research facility. Even though it's illegal for exorcists to help Kegare, Subaru secretly took care of Gaja until his limbs grew back. As a result, Gaja fell in love with her and Subaru reciprocated his feelings, but they can't be together because they're human and Kegare.
  • Fond Memories That Could Have Been: In her fight to the death with the corrupted Benio, Subaru dreams of being married to Gaja and becoming pregnant with his child.
  • Guns Akimbo: She dual-wields a pair of guns that come out of her hand fan.
  • The Gunslinger: She uses several guns that come out of her hand fan in combat.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She dies when she activates a curse that forces Benio's corrupted inner self out of her body, in order to give Rokuro the chance to save Benio.

  • Improbable Age: Subaru became Tenko of the Twelve Guardians when she was only 15 years old.
  • Interrupted Suicide: In the final arc, Subaru attempts to pull a Taking You with Me to defeat the corrupted Benio with a curse that will only activate with Subaru's own death. Gaja stops her, but only on her first attempt.
  • Interspecies Romance: With Gaja. She's a human and he's a Kegare, yet they have feelings for each other.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Her Kariginu looks like a old-fashioned Western gown. It didn't stop her from being a powerful exorcist.
  • Last Kiss: She has her first and only kiss with Gaja right before she activates the curse that kills her.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Her hair nearly reaches the floor, enhancing her ladylike dressing style and behavior.
  • Mentor Archetype: She was Benio's teacher in exorcism and after the time skip, she also takes Mayura as her apprentice.
  • Monster/Slayer Romance: Despite being an exorcist, she fell in love with a Kegare named Gaja.
  • More Dakka: Subaru uses the power of Tenko to enchant the water in atmosphere and create tons of firearms, including machine guns and missile launchers. Her fighting style mainly consists on unleashing Bullet Hell and Macross Missile Massacre on her opponent.
  • No Guy Wants an Amazon: Despite being a Proper Lady, Yuzuru explained that she is still single because she is too powerful and causes men to back off from her.
  • Old Maid: She's 35, and still looking for a man for herself. Lampshaded when Mayura got to fight her in the Hadarae Castle Game and the members of Amawaka clan called her "lonely old hag".
  • Perpetual Smiler: She never stops smiling.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: In the anime, she's rarely seen without Tatara at her side, but there's not even the slightest hint that they're anything more than companions.
  • Rescue Romance: She fell in love with Gaja because he saved her when she was stranded in Magano and protected her from other Kegare that came to attack her.
  • Sadist Teacher: Mayura thinks Subaru makes her go through Training from Hell because she enjoys watching her suffer.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: In the past, she broke the law of the Tsuchimikado Island by saving the life of a badly injured Kegare, Gaja, because she felt guilty about the torture he was put through by the scientists of her family.
  • Shower of Angst: Subaru takes a Waterfall Shower while feeling frustrated and scornful at the exorcists' decision to team up with Kegare against Sakanashi's forces in the final battle, as a lot of bloodshed and suffering could have been avoided if they took that decision earlier.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She hasn't gotten married because she's only attracted to Gaja, but she can't marry him because fraternizing with Kegare is illegal.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: In Benio's flashback, she is seen complaining for the lack for good men in the world.
  • Skinship Grope: She goes out of her way to feel up Mayura's breasts during their fight.
  • Southern Belle: She invokes this image by wearing a white Pimped-Out Dress and a matching big sunhat.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: In the manga, Subaru loses her life in the final battle. The anime has her survive to the end.

  • Stern Teacher: According to Mayura, Subaru's Training from Hell is worse than Seigen's. She even calls Subaru a "Showa Spartan Factory Manager".
  • Stylish Sunhats: She wears a white sunhat decorated with a large pink bow, giving her the image of a high-class lady.
  • Tea Is Classy: In the anime, Subaru introduces herself to Rokuro as she drinks from a fancy teacup while sitting on his living room's sofa, which she decorated with roses just to make herself look even classier.

Hagusa Household

    Tatara
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tatara_anime_design.png
Click here to see his uncovered face

Voiced By: Takuma Terashima (Japanese), Nicolas Roye (English)

A mysterious and silent exorcist covering his face with a paper mask that displays emoticons. He belongs to the Hagusa House. He represents Toda of the Twelve Guardians.

  • Adaptational Comic Relief: He's almost purely a Plucky Comic Relief in the anime. While he has some comical moments in the manga as well, he's a far darker character, especially after his origins reveal the brutality of the Hagusa clan.
  • Adaptation Species Change: In the anime, he is revealed to be a shikigami. However, he is revealed to be a human-snake demon hybrid in the manga.
  • Anime Hair: His hair looks like wolf or fox ears.
  • Creepy Good: Kinako states that Tatara is the scariest of the Twelve Guardians. Even Sakanashi thinks Tatara's One-Winged Angel form looks even more evil than him.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He's a monstrous half-snake creature with deadly poison powers, but still counts as one of the heroes because he fights the Kegare alongside the exorcists.
  • Devilish Hair Horns: His hair takes the shape of two large horns at the top of his head, hinting at his demonic nature.
  • Elemental Weapon: He can create swords forged from condensed poison.
  • Expressive Accessory: His paper mask shows his emotions through emoticons.
  • Facial Markings: He has a flower-like mark on the middle of his forehead.
  • Familial Body Snatcher: In the past, when his body was badly injured in battle, Tatara took over the body of one of his half-siblings.
  • Fangs Are Evil: His fangs are long and sharp like a snake. While he's technically one of the heroes, he has a very sinister aura. He's later revealed to be a cannibal snake hybrid monster.
  • Fun Size: At the end of the anime, he's now as small as Kinako.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: He's the hybrid offspring of Mishaguji, a half-woman half-snake monster that the Hagusa clan created through barbaric human experiments. Since the Hagusa clan was forbidden from using Mishaguji for battle, they forced their men to breed with Mishaguji and after many years of failures, Tatara was born.
  • Hellish Pupils: He has creepy snake-like narrow pupils to reflect his demonic nature.
  • Hide Your Otherness: His face is often covered by a paper mask to hide his snake features.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: For hundreds of years, Tatara has devoured his own half-siblings that were given to him as offerings from the Hagusa clan.
  • Losing Your Head: After being decapitated by Sakanashi, Tatara still survives and re-attaches his head almost immediately.
  • Meaningful Name: The Hagusa clan named him Tatara, meaning "furnace," because they believed he was destined to fan the flames of revolution in the war against Kegare.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: His One-Winged Angel form has six arms.
  • Mystical White Hair: As hinted by his silver hair, Tatara is special even among the Twelve Guardians and has the most mystical origins among the high-ranked exorcists. He's later revealed to be an inhuman monster that was born of a female snake demon.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: He kills one of the exorcists who were cursed by Sakanashi. Then it turns out the curse would only activate when one of the cursed exorcists was killed. And this causes the cursed exorcists to become portals for Kegare to invade the island. Cue big Oh, Crap! moment.
  • Nothing Up My Sleeve: A variation. In battle, Tatara's sleeves transform into giant poisonous snakes.
  • One-Winged Angel: When Tatara releases his power in the final battle against Sakanashi, his body turns into a half-human, half-snake monster with six arms.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: In the anime, he's always in the company of Subaru and it's clear they're nothing but friends.
  • Poisonous Person: He has the ability to release a toxic gas that causes everything in the nearby area to decay. Anything and anyone that makes physical contact with Tatara melts like acid.
  • The Quiet One: He rarely speaks, making his character even more mysterious.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He's really a snake demon hybrid that has lived for centuries.
  • Snake People: He has scale-like skin and long fangs like a snake. His One-Winged Angel form turns the lower half of his body into that of a snake.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: He has snake-like features and his powers are associated with snakes, tying back into his dark and ominous nature. Later on, he's revealed to be an actual snake demon hybrid that has survived by devouring his own half-siblings for generations.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: In the final battle of the manga, Tatara sacrifices his life to weaken Sakanashi's ultimate form. The anime shows he's still alive at the end.
  • Sssssnaketalk: Whenever he speaks, he elongates the sounds of his words like the hissing of a snake.
  • Suicide Attack: In the final battle against Sakanashi, Tatara uses the Flying Serpent's Final Curse, resulting in his own death. While it fails to kill off Sakanashi with him, Tatara's final attack does manage to cause him critical damage.
  • Token Evil Teammate: He's one of the Twelve Guardians, but he and his clan specialize in assassinations, with their targets often being those who get close to uncovering the darkest secrets of the exorcist history, and have a long history of killing their own kin with messed up human experiments or letting Tatara devour them as offerings.
  • Token Non-Human: Both in the manga and anime, Tatara is the only one of the Twelve Guardians who isn't human.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He loves to eat bread crust as much as Benio loves ohagi.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: His hair is white and he's very sinister despite technically being on the side of the heroes. His true identity is a man-eating snake demon hybrid.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Sakanashi twists off his right arm, to stop him from using the charm that would destroy Yuuto's new body.
  • Childhood Friends: He was friends with Arima, Seigen and Narumi in middle school.
  • Eyes Always Shut: He keeps his eyes shut at all times and it doesn't give him trouble to see where he's going.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: His clan specializes in support enchantments that boost the physical and enchanted capacities of the exorcists. Arata can also use these enchantments to weaken his opponent, such as adding weight to their body to the point he could crush them to death.
  • Magic Enhancement: His power as Taijo is casting enchantments on his allies to increase their physical abilities and enchanted powers.
  • Otaku: He's a big fan of Magical Girl shows, even using them as a theme for his shikigami.
  • Summon Magic: He can control shikigami with the form of Magical Girl Warriors and have them fight for him.
  • Support Party Member: He has no combat abilities and his powers focus on enchantments that serve as support for allies who can fight.

Zeze Household

    Miku Zeze
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miku_anime_design.png

Voiced By: Yui Ogura (Japanese), Amanda Céline Miller (English)

Matriarch of the Zeze House. She represents Daion of the Twelve Guardians. Despite her childlike appearance, she's an adult and the oldest among the Twelve Guardians. She shares a mother-daughter bond with Sakura, her fellow Guardian.

  • A-Cup Angst: She isn't too happy with Sakura, who she met as an infant, now being bigger than her in every physical aspect, including the chest.
  • Action Mom: Miku is one of the Twelve Guardians and Sakura sees her as a mother figure.
  • Anime Hair: Her hair is styled into huge ringlets that are much more voluminous than her petite body.
  • Badass Adorable: Miku is one of the most powerful exorcist in the island while having the appearance of a life-sized doll.
  • Cleavage Window: Her Mystic Gear sports a heart-shaped hole in the middle of the chest.
  • Cool Crown: She wears a headband with a small coronet attached to the right side.
  • A Death in the Limelight: She dies in a Heroic Sacrifice following the few chapters that feature her backstory and mother-daughter relationship with Sakura.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Sakura embraces Miku as she gives out her last breath.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: Through the Clear Mirror Charm, Miku can turn her dolls into copies of herself to synchronize her attacks with them.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: She likes to dress in dark Lolita fashion, which complements her doll-like looks.
  • Expository Pronoun: She uses "washi" which is a first-person pronoun reserved for the elderly. This is an indication that she's a middle-aged woman despite looking like a kid.
  • Final First Hug: In her final moments, Miku fully expresses her motherly love for Sakura by letting her rest on her lap and telling her just how happy she was of having been able to raise her.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Although she's actually an adult, she still looks like a little girl and usually carries a stuffed animal in her arms. She also uses stuffed animals as weapons.
  • Go Out with a Smile: She dies smiling at her surrogate daughter Sakura.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Miku uses up her last bit of power to help Sakura and Shizuru defeat Gabura instead of healing herself. She dies from her injuries shortly after.
  • High-Class Gloves: Her personalized exorcist gear includes classy long gloves, probably to signify her status as a family head.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Despite her feelings for Tsubaki, she sincerely congratulated him when he announced his marriage to another woman.
  • Law of Inverse Fertility: She and her husband tried to conceive a child for almost ten years, but they were never able to.
  • Little Miss Badass: Miku is one of the Twelve Guardians and she has the body of a ten-year-old despite being in her mid-fifties.
  • Lonely Doll Girl: After her husband died, Miku stayed locked inside her bedroom making stuffed dolls she wanted to give to the baby she never had.
  • Magical Flutist: Miku controls her enchanted dolls by playing a flute.
  • Marionette Master: Her main power is to control dolls and use them as her weapons.
  • Mom Looks Like a Sister: While Miku is in her mid-fifties, she could pass off as the little sister of her adopted daughter Sakura.
  • The Mourning After:
    • In the manga, she was heartbroken by the death of her husband and never remarried.
    • In the anime, she never married because of her feelings for Tsubaki and after his death, she raised his daughter Sakura and swore to one day avenge him.
  • The Napoleon: She's so short that she looks like a child, but has the attitude of a grumpy middle-aged lady.
  • Older Than She Looks: Miku looks about ten, but she's actually the oldest of the Twelve Guardians at her mid-fifties.
  • Parental Substitute: She took it upon herself to raise and train Sakura after her father died. Since Miku was never able to conceive a child of her own, Sakura was like Miku's true daughter. When Miku dies, Sakura calls Miku her mother for the first and last time.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Her default facial expression is an aloof, disdainful frown. She only occasionally smiles at Sakura.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: When using her Mystic Gear, her hair becomes lighter.
  • Regal Ringlets: Exaggerated. She has four huge ringlets in the back. It represents her status as the family head of a powerful exorcist household.
  • Sacrificial Lion: She gets killed by Gabura after he kills Narumi to show off just how powerful and dangerous the third Basara is.
  • Showgirl Skirt: In her exorcist gear, she wears a skirt that's cut much shorter at the front, mainly for better mobility of her legs.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: In the anime, she rejected the many suitors who proposed marriage to her because she was only interested in Tsubaki, even though he chose to marry another woman.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She was attracted to Tsubaki, who was a good-natured and cheerful man. In the manga, before meeting Tsubaki, she also had a husband who was kind and loving to her.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: While Miku is alive by the end of the anime storyline, she dies in the manga after being fatally injured by Gabura.
  • Textile Work Is Feminine: She learned to make stuffed animals so her child would play with them, but she never managed to get pregnant.
  • Token Mini-Moe: She's the youngest-looking member of the Twelve Guardians, resembling a doll. Ironically, she's really the oldest member.
  • Tragic Keepsake: She kept the stuffed doll she modeled after Tsubaki when he was still alive.
  • Tsundere: She's very aloof and irritable, but she reveals a softer side around Sakura. Flashbacks show she was also too gruff to openly express her fondness for Tsubaki.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Her sharp eyes suit her aloof Tsundere character.
  • Unrequited Love Lasts Forever: Miku was in love with Tsubaki, but he didn't reciprocate her feelings and married another woman. Despite this, Miku never got over him and after his death, she became dedicated to training his daughter so they could avenge him together.
  • Vocal Dissonance: The anime gives her the mature voice of an adult woman that heavily contrasts her cutesy, doll-like appearance.

    Hibari Zeze
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hibari_zeze.jpg

Miku's successor as the Zeze family head and Daion of the Twelve Guardians.

  • An Arm and a Leg: He loses an arm in the final battle against Gabura. He dies from his injuries soon after.
  • Battle Baton: He wields a baton that he uses like a Magic Wand.
  • Bully Magnet: In his childhood, he was bullied by other kids from the Zeze branch families.
  • Coat Cape: Hibari wears a military coat like a cape.
  • Died Happily Ever After: When he dies, his spirit goes back to being a kid and reunites with Tsukumo, his father figure. They hold hands and happily Go into the Light together.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Subverted. He wears round glasses, but despite his antagonistic attitude towards his fellow exorcists, he's obe of the heroes and has a better side to him.
  • Fur and Loathing: His casual clothes come with a fur-lined coat and his personality is highly unpleasant to say the least.
  • Go Out with a Smile: He dies smiling as his spirit reunites with Tsukumo in the afterlife.
  • Happily Adopted: After his parents' death, he was adopted by an exorcist named Tsukumo who he loved like his real dad. Sadly, Tsukumo also died after being abandoned by some exorcists while fighting Kegare.
  • How Dare You Die on Me!: He screamed in anger and agony when he received the news of Tsukumo's death, being mad at Tsukumo for breaking his promise to never leave him alone.
  • Ineffectual Loner: He thinks he and Tsukumo are good enough to defeat Kegare on their own and don't need to cooperate in teamwork with the other Guardians. When facing the Basara Gabura, he quickly realizes he can't hope to win by himself. He's only saved by Shizuru and Sakura arriving to help him fight Gabura.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He comes off as an obnoxious asshole who thinks he's better than everyone and talks down to his fellow Commanders, but he's a heroic guy regardless. He fights to protect low-level exorcists from Kegare and cooperates with other Twelve Guardians in battle. He also can't stand those who abuse their power to trample over the weak.
  • Lonely Together: Tsukumo adopted Hibari after the latter's father died in Magano. Since Tsukumo lived alone too, he took Hibari in so both would keep each other company.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: The moment Benio confesses her true nature as Great Yin in front of the Twelve Guardians, Hibari immediately decides Benio must be killed as all Kegare are a threat that must be eliminated.
  • Social Darwinist: He believes only the strong ones can survive in Magano and the weak ones will naturally be killed by Kegare.
  • Van Helsing Hate Crimes: He insists Benio must be killed on the basis of her being a Kegare as he believes all Kegare must be exterminated by exorcists even though Benio is on the exorcists' side and the entire reason why she's a Kegare is to help destroy the King of the Kegare.
  • What You Are in the Dark: His adoptive father Tsukumo died in a battle against Kegare because a group of jerkish exorcists ran away and left him to die in their place. Hibari had the perfect chance to avenge Tsukumo by letting one of the jerks fall to his death. Despite still hating the jerk, Hibari saved him because he doesn't want to do anything that would disappoint Tsukumo.

    Tsukumo Zeze
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsukumo_zeze.jpg

Hibari's partner. Although he appears to be human, he's really a shikigami which Hibari based on his deceased adoptive father.

  • Doppelgänger Attack: Hibari can create clones of Tsukumo in battle.
  • Replacement Goldfish: He's a shikigami puppet based on Hibari's adoptive father who died while fighting Kegare.
  • Satellite Character: He only exists to serve as Hibari's partner and has no remarkable traits of his own.
  • Spiky Hair: He has a very spiky, messy hairstyle.
  • The Stoic: Unlike Hibari, Tsukumo keeps a composed facial expression at all times. Since he's a shikigami, he probably can't emote.
  • Sword and Sorcerer: He has this dynamic with Hibari in battle. Tsukumo equips himself with Instant Armor and wields a sword to attack Kegare while Hibari supports him from the side with spells that boost his attack power.

Sada Household

    Sakura Sada
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sakura_anime_design.png

Voiced By: Lynn (Japanese), Alex Cazares (English)

Matriarch of the Sada House. She represents Rikugo of the Twelve Guardians.

  • Adaptational Wimp: Sakura's fighting abilities are way less impressive in the anime than in the manga.
  • Alliterative Name: Sakura Sada.
  • Animal Motifs: She wears a cat-eared hat and her Mystic Gear has a feline motif.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Unlike other exorcists who use weapons and charms, Sakura specializes in fighting Kegare with her punches and kicks.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She asks the flat-chested Miku if she's jealous of her well-endowed figure.
  • Cast from Lifespan: Similar to Sayo, Sakura houses dozens of powerful Enchanted Guardians. Using their great power inevitably reduces her lifespan.
  • Close-Range Combatant: Out of all the exorcists in the manga, Sakura is the biggest close combat specialist and melee fighter.
  • Cool Helmet: Her Mystic Gear includes a helmet with two crests that are shaped like cat ears.
  • Dies Wide Open: She dies with her eyes open after Gabura mortally wounds her.
  • Expressive Accessory: The expression of her cat hat changes according to her mood and situation.
  • Expy: Her clothing and fighting style are based on those of Tanpopo from the author's earlier work Good Luck Girl!. Ironically, Sakura is Hot-Blooded and Tanpopo is The Stoic.
  • Happily Adopted: After being orphaned, she was left under the care of Miku and they became like true mother and daughter.
  • Hot-Blooded: She's loud, impulsive and extremely passionate at the time of a fight.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: In her second fight with Gabura, his punch goes through her body and Sakura loses half of her abdomen.
  • Leotard of Power: The battlesuit of her Mystic Gear is a leotard.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Before assuming care of Sakura, Miku was deeply depressed by her husband's death and her inability to have children. Sakura was like the daughter Miku never had and brought her back the will to live.
  • Many Spirits Inside of One: Instead of inheriting a single Spiritual Guardians, the head of the Sada house is the host of all the previous deceased family heads. As the 41st head, Sakura has 40 Spiritual Guardians.
  • No Indoor Voice: She has a tendency to shout most of her dialogue. It's a habit she got from her father.
  • Prehensile Tail: Her Mystic Gear has a tail which she can use as an extra limb to attack her enemy.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: Her fighting style consists of launching a furious assault of fists and kicks.
  • Sexy Cat Person: Her Mystic Gear is a skintight Leotard of Power with a cat theme.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: She wears a Qipao-inspired dress with a slit on both sides, showing off her long and slender legs. Besides fanservice, she's also a martial artist who often uses kicks in battle.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Her father had No Indoor Voice just like her.
  • Sinister Scythe: Her weapon in the anime is a scythe.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: In the anime, Sakura survives up to the end. In the manga, however, she's killed by Gabura.
  • Specs of Awesome: She wears big round glasses and is the strongest hand-to-hand fighter in the manga.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: In the middle of her final fight, Sakura sees Gabura's memories of his human mother. Even though she knows Gabura is the monster that killed her father and adoptive mother, Sakura ends up sympathizing with him so much that she spends her final moments comforting him as he cries... Right after he punched a hole through her, no less.
  • You Killed My Father: In both the manga and anime, she swore vengeance against the Basara that killed her father. In the manga, her mother figure Miku is killed by the same Basara.

    Tsubaki Sada
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsubaki_sada.png

Voiced By: Eiji Takeuchi (Japanese), Doug Erholtz (English)

The father of Sakura and an old friend of Miku. He was killed in action by a Basara.

  • Family Theme Naming: Combined with Floral Theme Naming. Tsubaki (Japanese name for camellia) and his daughter Sakura (Japanese name for cherry blossom) are named after flowers.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Compared to the anime, his death was more graphic in the manga, where he got his body ripped in half by Gabura.
  • Nice Guy: Although he only appears in short flashbacks, he seemed to be a kindhearted and friendly man who was a good friend to Miku and a loving father to Sakura.
  • No Indoor Voice: Like Sakura, he spoke extremely loudly, all the time.
  • Oblivious to Love: He didn't know Miku had deeper feelings than friendship for him.
  • Posthumous Character: He was killed by Gabura years before the story begins.
  • Second Love: In the manga, he helped Miku get over her depression after her husband died. She developed feelings for him as a result, but he didn't feel the same way and married someone else.
  • Shared Family Quirks: His daughter learned to shout out all of her lines by copying him.
  • Take Care of the Kids: Before he died, he asked Miku to take care of Sakura in his place.

Kasukami Household

    Cordelia Kasukami
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cordelia_anime_design.png

Voiced By: Kiyono Yasuno (Japanese), Abby Trott (Credited as Alicia Stratten) (English)

A girl with robotic limbs, belonging to the Kasukami House which uses robotics for exorcisms. She bears the name of Tenku of the Twelve Guardians.

  • Artificial Limbs: She has mechanical arms with 5 claws on the end.
  • Cuteness Proximity: She loves cute things.
  • Cyborg: After she was mortally injured by a Kegare, she had most of her body parts replaced with cybernetic enchanted armor.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Cordelia was originally a normal girl named Tsuyuko. It's implied she was abused at home until her father died in Magano and her mother died from illness. She was taken in by the Kasukami family, but that only meant being turned into a test subject for the human experiments that aimed to create a vessel for Tenku. She was fatally wounded during a Kegare attack and since the Kasukami didn't want to lose their only successful test subject, they replaced her missing limbs with robotic parts. The surgery caused damage to her brain, causing her to lose the ability to speak and lose most of her memory.
  • Emotionless Girl: Her facial expression and behavior are practically robotic. It's later revealed the Kasukami family made her this way through experiments as the vessel of Tenku needs to be rid of all emotions to have full control of the shikigami.
  • Friend to All Children: In the anime, she enjoys playing with children while taking a break from exorcism.
  • Girlish Pigtails: After the second time skip, she now ties her hair up in twintails.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: During the battle against Sakanashi, Cordelia gets incinerated by the blast from the Kegare Battleship, and dies in the explosion that follows. Her final attack still manages to stop the Kegare Battleship, which gives the exorcist army the chance to invade it and start their attack.
  • Hime Cut: She has blunt bangs, chin-length sidelocks, and classic length straight hair. Her hairstyle symbolizes her status as a high-ranking exorcist.
  • Humongous Mecha: Cordelia pilots a 30 meter robotic armor named Tengen Kuga.
  • Locked into Strangeness: Her hair was black when she was a child. It changed to lilac as a result of the body modifications done to her by the Kasukami clan to make her into a suitable vessel for Tenku.
  • Odd Name Out: Cordelia is the only exorcist with a Western name instead of a Japanese one.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: "Cordelia" is the name the Kasukami gave her after taking her in. Her real name is Tsuyuko.
  • Out of Focus: Out of the Twelve Guardians, Cordelia gets the least focus and characterization by far. Her backstory is only revealed until the final arc.
  • Robot Antennae: She has two speaker-like devices floating on the sides of her head, resembling antennae.
  • Robot Girl: She's a young girl who was modified into a Cyborg, having large robotic arms and Robot Antennae.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Cordelia is still at the end of the anime, but she dies at the start of the final battle in the manga.
  • The Stoic: Her facial expression never changes.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She acts emotionless like a machine. In the anime, she can smile around children.
  • Technicolor Eyes: She has pink eyes.
  • Token Robot: Unlike the other Twelve Guardians, Cordelia has robotic body parts because her exorcist clan specializes in Magitek.
  • Van Helsing Hate Crimes: She's one of the Guardians who agrees with Hibari in that they should kill Benio for no reason other than her being a Kegare, even though she has shown no signs of being evil or dangerous to humans.

    Shozan Saragi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shozan_saragi.png

The head of the Saragi family that serves as the leading retainers of the Kasukami family. He's notable for having a screw on his head.

  • An Arm and a Leg: He loses his right arm during the attack of Kegare in the final arc.
  • Childhood Friends: He was childhood friends with Cordelia/Tsuyuko before she was taken in by the Kasukami family and made the vessel of Tenku. There's also hints of Childhood Friend Romance between them, but now he's too tormented by guilt of letting the Kasukami turn her into a machine to let himself show his true feelings for her until he thinks he's going to die.
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: He's always seen wearing a labcoat, giving him a more scientific look than other exorcists.
  • My Greatest Failure: He feels remorse over letting the Kasukami clan use his only childhood friend as a test subject until she became little more than an emotionless machine.
  • Satellite Character: The limited amount of focus he gets is entirely dedicated to his relationship with Cordelia/Tsuyuko.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: He wears large, round glasses and leads a clan that specializes in the development of robotic enchanted armor.

Kegare

    In General
  • Become a Real Boy: Rokuro theorizes that the real reason why Kegare attack humans and absorb their spiritual energy is because Kegare subconsciously long to become humans.
  • Bishōnen Line: All the Basara originally looked like ugly monsters like the regular Kegare. The more spiritual energy they absorb, the more humanlike and attractive they become. Rokuro believes most Kegare look monstrous because they only absorb negative emotions, but once they manage to absorb positive emotions like love, they gain a more human-like appearance.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: Most of the Basara have a single eye with black sclerae.
  • Emotion Eater: They feed off negative emotions such as hatred, fear and despair.
  • Hades Shaded: Because they're beings composed of yin energy, Kegare have dark skin.
  • Made of Evil: They're made of yin energy.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: All the Basara have at least one golden-yellow eye.

    Kamui
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kamui_anime_design.png

Voiced by: Yuki Ono (Japanese), Ben Diskin (English)

The Kegare that killed Benio's parents. After taking their spiritual powers he evolved into a Basara, a powerful Kegare that has human like appearance and intelligence. He has become quite fixated with Benio, seeing her as having the potential to be a Worthy Opponent.

  • Arch-Enemy: Benio made her life goal to kill Kamui and avenge the death of her parents who sacrificed themselves to protect her from Kamui. Although, their relationship grows increasingly complicated as Benio is forced to ask for Kamui's help more than once and Kamui seems to be developing feelings of attraction towards Benio.
  • The Atoner: He eventually decides to fight for the sake of atoning for his past crimes, primarily protecting Benio even though she already said she won't forgive him for murdering her parents.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Without quite understanding it himself, Kamui develops affection for Benio because she was the first human to sincerely thank him for helping her by giving her Kegare legs.
  • Berserk Button: He eventually develops an intolerance to seeing Rokuro getting physically close to women who aren't Benio because he knows it will make Benio upset.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: His left eye. Bonus point for the iris being red.
  • Blood Knight: The narration literally calls him a battle freak, and he basically lets Benio and Rokuro go because they can put up a good fight. He, however, dislikes those who show off their strength, like Yuuto.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Subverted. When Benio sees him for the first time in six years, Kamui states that he doesn't remember killing her parents just like a human doesn't remember how many ants they have stepped on. After thinking about it, turns out Kamui does remember Benio's parents because they were the only people he saw perform a Heroic Sacrifice by let themselves be killed by him to save their daughter.
  • The Comically Serious: If you ignore the kind of situation he appears in, some of his lines are pretty funny.
Kamui:(ruffling through his pockets for his weapon) Umm, where did I put it? Ahh, here it is.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: After the second Time Skip, Kamui's feelings for Benio have caused him to develop a new level of dislike towards Rokuro and he outright challenges Rokuro to a fight with Benio as the prize.
  • Deal with the Devil: Offers one to Benio telling her that he will take her to the first Kegare ever created, Chinu, in hopes that Benio will be able to regain her power for the sole reason that she and Rokuro will be able to fight him again later.
  • Declaration of Protection: Kamui eventually resolves to protect Benio. This is partly caused by him absorbing her parents' protective instincts towards her and also because he might be falling in love with her.
  • Dynamic Entry: Every time he enters, he flashily kills Kegare attacking Benio. He has done this in every single of his in-story entrances so far. Every. Single. Time. Not that there's many of them, but still.
  • Enemy Mine: In the final arc, Kamui joins forces with Rokuro to stop Sakanashi's plan to create a world ruled by Kegare. However, he makes clear he still doesn't intend to get along with Rokuro nor does he want to protect humanity. He's only helping because both he and Rokuro want to save Benio from being used by Sakanashi.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Implied by Kamui's reaction after Benio thanked him for helping her. Seems like he didn't realize why she would want to thank him.
Benio: Be prepared... These fangs you've given me, one day, will come to defeat you.
Kamui: ...hah. If I can get a fun battle out of it, that's all I...
    Benio: But, thank you, Kamui...
    Kamui: You, what are you...
  • Evil Mentor: Downplayed... for now. He has become one of sorts to Benio, as both times she needed power, he showed up.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Kamui slowly changes from Benio's biggest enemy to her most dependable ally, even though he still claims he only helps her so she will be a strong opponent later on. He officially turns into a good guy in Benio's short spin-off.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Kamui has apparently developed feelings for Benio who only loves Rokuro and wants to exorcise Kamui to avenge her parents.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Eventually, Kamui's greatest wish changes from wanting to face strong exorcists to wanting love for himself, specifically Benio's love. He's extremely frustrated by knowing Benio's heart already belongs to Rokuro.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Once he finally gets that Benio won't ever have feelings for him, Kamui chooses to help Rokuro be together with Benio as that's the only way for Benio to be happy.
  • It Amused Me: Justifies most things he does as it being part of his hobby.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Very pretty face, his hair reaches his shoulders and he has very long eyelashes. It grew even longer in his Super Mode.
  • Love Redeems: Kamui ultimately realizes that Benio's happiness is more important to him than anything. Since a world ruled by Kegare won't make Benio happy, Kamui joins Rokuro's side to stop Sakanashi's plan to take over the world.
  • Near-Rape Experience: Downplayed. Kamui impulsively acts on instincts and rips Benio's clothes after he sees her take off her leggings. However, he never had the intention to rape her in the first place as he didn't know what he was doing. When he snaps out of it, he looks extremely confused by his own actions.
  • No Shirt, Long Jacket: Kamui wears a black tailcoat which is left opened to expose his torso.
  • No Social Skills: He has never interacted with humans aside from murdering them, which leads to the incredibly awkward way he acts around Benio during their journey to meet Chinu. For instance, he doesn't understand why Benio is uncomfortable when he, without a warning, stops to pee with her watching and more seriously, he rips off her clothes when he gets aroused by her wet body, leaving Benio terrified and in tears.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: During the Basara invasion at the start of the final arc, Kamui tells the other Basara that he won't allow anyone but himself to defeat Rokuro and warns them to stay out of their fight.
  • Please Kill Me if It Satisfies You: When begging the exorcists to join forces with the Kegare of Outcast Valley, Kamui offers them to kill him if that can satisfy their hatred, only asking that they save the Twin Star Exorcists from Sakanashi. Fortunately, Asuha convinces the exorcists to help peacefully.
  • Race-Name Basis: Before he told his name, humans referred to him as "Basara".
  • Sadistic Choice: Kamui enjoys driving exorcists to a corner by forcing them to choose between two cruel options with a Race Against the Clock. He usually offers two painful ways to kill them to see them in despair and other times, he offers them to spare them in exchange of killing a loved one to see them betray each other.
  • Shipping Torpedo: After the second Time Skip, Kamui actively tries to break Rokuro and Benio apart. His reasoning is that Rokuro won't ever be Benio's equal in power as long as he refuses to awaken as Great Yang and even if he does awaken, he and Benio won't be able to stay together since Benio will be forced to be trapped in Magano forever. However, Rokuro almost immediately figures out that Kamui just doesn't want to see Benio sad when she inevitably needs to be separated from Rokuro.
  • Significant White Hair, Dark Skin: Kamui has dark skin, as standard for Basara, and silvery hair. He's both the first Basara introduced and the first to make a Heel–Face Turn.
  • The Stoic: Rarely displays any emotion at all. Rokuro lampshades it.
Kamui: It's been a while since I've felt this sort of elation.
Rokuro: You don't look elated at all!
  • Super Mode: He gains one while defending Benio's Kegare unlocking ritual.
  • Villainous Crush: Although Kamui himself doesn't understand it, it has been shown that he, while traveling to Chinu with Benio, has developed an increasing attraction towards her because of her kindness and unfortunately, impusively, displays his new confusing emotions rather unkindly.
  • Villainous Rescue: Kills a bunch of Kegare who were attacking Benio. So far, he has technically done it every time he appeared. With the same person.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: Kamui has a hard time comprehending his growing feelings of romantic and sexual attraction towards Benio. At one point, this culminates in Kamui ripping off Benio's clothes without he himself understanding the meaning behind his actions.

    Hijirimaru
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hijirimaru.jpg

The fourth strongest Basara.

  • Badass and Child Duo: Prior to becoming a Basara, he used to be a gigantic Kegare and Higano was the size of a child.
  • Barbarian Long Hair: He has very long hair worn in twintails and despite his disgusting personality, he has a very good-looking face.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: He has the ability to control small rocks or dust particles, invisible to the human eye, with his fingertips.
  • Evil Duo: He doesn't go anywhere without Higano and they attack exorcists together. Hijirimaru is the wild and sadistic half of the duo.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: His eyes are covered by his bangs, only becoming visible after absorbing Higano's spiritual powers.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Played With. He ties up his hair in twintails, but completely lacks any personality traits of the trope. Bonus material made a joke with the author drawing Hijirimaru as a Tsundere girl to fit his hairstyle.
  • Maniac Tongue: He has his tongue sticking out almost all the time, which is sign that he's unhinged.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Just to make the point of how disgustingly sadistic he is, Hijirimaru tells Shimon he will spare his little sister Sayo if Shimon rapes her while Hijirimaru and Higano are watching. Even though Hijirimaru knew Shimon would never go so low to survive, that doesn't make his order any less repulsive.
  • Sadist: He gets the kicks from seeing humans suffering in despair, as he feeds off their anger and fear.
  • Villainous Friendship: Despite Hijirimaru's crude attitude, he and Higano are shown to truly be friends and they have been together since before they became Basara.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Downplayed, he doesn't bicker that much with Higano, but he does shout at him (mainly "shut up".) Higano doesn't reciprocate.
  • Wolverine Claws: His Impure Death Equip takes the form of two giant claws that cover the full length of his arms.

    Higano
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/higano.jpg

The third weakest Basara, always tagging along with Hijirimaru.

  • An Arm and a Leg: His left leg gets blown up in his clash with Benio's Super Mode.
  • Badass and Child Duo: He's been following the massively-stronger Hijirimaru for a long time. When they first met, Higano was a diminutive Kegare in contrast with Hijirimaru who was a giant.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: He dies in Hijirimaru's arms.
  • Evil Duo: Higano has been by Hijirimaru's side since before they became Basara and they attack exorcists together. Higano is the coolheaded and sensible half of the duo.
  • I Got Bigger: He was very small in his younger days as a regular Kegare and a new Basara. In the present, he's taller than Hijirimaru who instead shrank from a gigantic Kegare to a human-sized Basara.
  • Last Request: With his dying breath. Higano asks Hijirimaru to become the new King of the Kegare and free their race of the rotting wasteland that is Magano.
  • Morality Pet: Despite his sadistic personality, Hijirimaru does have a notable soft spot for Higano even if the latter isn't spared of his violence. Shiromi felt disappointed when he thought Higano had made Hijirimaru become weak.
  • Shoulder Teammate: In the past, the small Higano used to sit on the gigantic Hijirimaru's shoulder. After they became Basara, they became closer in size.
  • Villainous Valour: After being exhausted by facing Benio's Super Mode, Higano allows Hijirimaru to absorb his remaining spiritual power.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Hijirimaru, although it's a one-way thing.

    Chinu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chinu.png

The oldest Basara and the first Kegare ever created over a thousand years ago.

  • Benevolent Monsters: Chinu was once a murderous Kegare like any other, but somewhere along the way, she began to like human culture, especially their music. She acts very friendly with Benio and makes clear that she doesn't want Kegare to eradicate humanity because she wouldn't get to hear their music ever again.
  • Eccentric Mentor: She acts somewhat silly and takes enjoyment out of teasing Benio. Soon enough, she assumes the role of an unexpected guide as she teaches Benio what being the female Twin Star Exorcist really means. Afterwards, she sends Benio back to the battlefield in a Stripperiffic outfit for giggles.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: Benio never imagined the most powerful Basara would look like a very little girl.
  • Identical Stranger: Chinu looks like a dark-skinned Abe no Seimei. Turns out Chinu is the first Great Yin created by Ashiya Doman, who modeled her after Abe no Seimei.
  • Immortal Immaturity: Chinu has lived for over a thousand years, but she has the jovial attitude of a young girl and teases Benio about how she knows where human babies come from. She does show a more serious side when the situation calls for it.
  • Intrigued by Humanity: Chinu enjoys human culture and collects the remaining items of humans after other Kegare kill them.
  • Girlish Pigtails: After the second time skip, she's seen wearing pigtails.
  • Grand Theft Me: Her original body was destroyed by Sakanashi 800 years ago. However, her head was left intact and a low-level Kegare ate it, allowing Chinu to gain a new body, but losing her power as the Great Yin.
  • Missed the Call: Chinu was the original Great Yin who was supposed to give birth to the prophesied child 800 years ago. However, her lover Sakanashi wasn't going to give her away to the first Great Yang, and killed both Chinu and the Great Yang before they could meet each other.
  • Ms. Exposition: She explains Benio what exactly the Twin Star Exorcists are and how the Kegare came to be because of Ashiya Doman.
  • Older Alter Ego: When she performs the ritual to revive Benio, Chinu takes an adult form, which is her true appearance.
  • The Older Immortal: She's the oldest Basara with over 1,000 years of age.
  • Poor Communication Kills: 800 years ago, Chinu kept a secret that she was the Great Yin from her lover Sakanashi and started a Kegare family with him, eventually becoming the founders of the Outcast Valley. When she finally told Sakanashi about her fate of producing the prophesied child with the Great Yang and dying as a result, Sakanashi felt betrayed by her and didn't want to hear any of her excuses, killing both her and the Great Yang. Lampshaded by Chinu herself when she admits that if she and Sakanashi had just had a proper conversation, they could have avoided their tragedy and the King of the Kegare would have been exorcised centuries ago.
  • Really 700 Years Old: While she looks like a little girl, Chinu has lived for over a thousand years.
  • Retired Monster: She lost count of how many humans she killed in the past, but nowadays, she has no interest in fighting exorcists or hurting anyone. She only seeks to find items made by humans for her collection.
  • Robbing the Dead: She goes around Magano looking for human corpses and takes their possessions to add them to her collection. Benio is disgusted by this.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She has pink hair and a very friendly, cheerful disposition despite being a Kegare.
  • Seen It All: She has met the female Twin Star many times in the past since they all came to her seeking help to recover their powers. Chinu already saw all kinds of reactions when Great Yin learns her fate to become the Princess of the Kegare from going insane to committing suicide. This is why Chinu complimented Benio for being the only Great Yin who didn't have a Freak Out after learning the Awful Truth.
  • Stronger with Age: Subverted. As the first Kegare and Basara, Chinu is said to be the strongest of them all and ranked first, for her age. However, Kamui reveals that Chinu's spiritual power is equivalent to that of a low-level Kegare.
  • Token Mini-Moe: Chinu is the youngest-looking Basara, having the appearance of a very small girl. It's ironic given that she's in fact the oldest of them.
  • Wild Card: Unlike other Basara, Chinu is indifferent to the war between exorcists and Kegare. She did kill humans before, but eventually came to like human entertainment and chooses to stay out of the fight so she can focus on collecting items from dead humans.

    Kaguya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaguya_sousei.jpg

The sixth strongest Basara.

    Yuzuriha
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuzuriha.jpg

The tenth ranked Basara.

  • Alas, Poor Yorick: After the first Singularity, Yuzuriha is seen talking to Sakanashi's severed head that she's holding in her arms.
  • Animal Motifs: She wears a hoodie with rabbit ears and her Mystic Gear is an armor with a rabbit theme.
  • Combat Clairvoyance: She can use her power of foresight to predict Benio's attacks in their fight. However, she can't dodge when Benio moves too fast for her to foresee it.
  • Emotionless Girl: She never emotes.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Her hair is tied in twin braids.
  • Off with Her Head!: After her defeat, there's nothing left of her body but her head.
  • Sensor Character: She has great abilities to detect spell power.
  • Sycophantic Servant: She knows she doesn't have to be loyal to Sakanashi, but she prefers to be used by him and die for his goal than to live and die for nothing at all.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: She openly calls herself a hardcore masochist.
  • Walking Swimsuit Scene: She wears a one-piece swimsuit at all times.

    Shiromi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shiromi.jpg

The fifth strongest Basara.

  • Avenging the Villain: He attempts to kill Rokuro in order to take revenge for Hijirimaru, who Shiromi considered his brother-in-arms.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He's the most well-dressed Basara, wearing a white tailcoat jacket suit.
  • Classy Cane: He dresses like an English gentleman, even carrying a cane to complete the image.
  • Classy Cravat: His stylish suit comes with a white cravat tie and a blue rose on top.
  • Color Motif: His hair is white in the left half and black in the right. Back when he was a regular Kegare, half of his body was black and the other was white.
  • Combat Tentacles: Shiromi's Impure Death Equip transforms his limbs into octopus-like tentacles that can be stretched and hardened at will.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He's a pretty-looking man with waist-length hair tied back in a low ponytail.
  • Lovecraftian Superpower: He can turn his legs and arms into tentacles.
  • New Friend Envy: He saw Hijirimaru as his brother-in-arms, but stopped hanging out with him after Hijirimaru took Higano as his companion. He didn't really understand why he was so angry about it, but it's clear he was jealous that Hijirimaru had found himself a new Best Friend.
  • Signature Headgear: He wears a distinctive black top hat that has stitched two eyes and a mouth.
  • Speech Impediment: He stutters a lot in his speech.
  • What Is This Feeling?: Shiromi found himself getting annoyed when he saw how close Hijirimaru and Higano had become. He thought he was disappointed at Hijirimaru hanging out with a weakling, but just before he dies he begins to think there was another reason he never understood behind his irritation.

    Gabura
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gabura.png

The third strongest Basara. His risk level is SS due to being deemed the 'strongest' Basara the exorcists of Tsuchimikado Island have faced and fallen to.

  • Abusive Parents: His father performed a forbidden ritual on him to turn him into a Kegare and then his mother tried to kill him for being transformed into a hideous monster.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: After Shizuru kills him, she takes pity on him now that she knows his origins and comforts him by staying by his side in his final moments.
  • Ax-Crazy: Unlike other Basara who seek energy, Gabura murders humans because he thinks it's fun.
  • Baby Talk: He talks like a toddler despite being a senior Basara. It comes off as disturbing instead of cute. He speaks more normally after the timeskip, though.
  • Barbarian Long Hair: After the second Time Skip, his hair is much longer and now ties it back in a spiky ponytail.
  • Barefoot Loon: He's the most insane Basara and doesn't wear shoes.
  • Bloodbath Villain Origin: When he was just a boy, he was forcibly transformed into a Kegare by his father and his mother ordered the guards to kill him. Then, Gabura killed everyone in the room, including his own parents.
  • Braids of Action: His hairstyle includes braids on the sides after the second Time Skip and he's still one of the strongest Basara left.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Shizuru and Sakura come up with a technique that traps Gabura inside a secluded space that infuses his body with yang energy to significantly reduce his strength and slow down his movements and reaction time. Even though this gives Sakura the upper hand at first, Gabura manages to fight back and destroys the enclosure before casting multiple curses that would have killed all the exorcists nearby if Rokuro haven't intervened with his Great Yang power.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: When Shizuru finally gets her rematch against him after four years, Gabura doesn't even recognize her. Shizuru is pissed that Gabura doesn't seem to remember he brutally killed her father and brothers in front of her.
  • Cradle of Loneliness: He kills Sakura, the only human who ever showed him sympathy. Afterwards, Gabura is seen hugging her dead body, even when it starts rotting.
  • Demon of Human Origin: Unlike other Basara, Gabura was born as a human, but became a Kegare as a result of his father performing a forbidden ritual on him.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Shizuru kills him and tells him he'll go to hell for his sins, but Gabura at least appreciates that he wasn't alone in his final moments and smiles at his killer.
  • Facial Horror: When he was a younger Kegare, he had a large tumor over his left eye and said tumor had two more faces on it.
  • Given Name Reveal: As revealed by Hibari, Gabura's real name is Ariyuki Tsuchimikado.
  • Graceful Loser: After Shizuru finally kills him, Gabura asks her name and tells her he enjoyed their fight.
  • Guinea Pig Family: His own father used him as a guinea pig for an experimental forbidden ritual that turned humans into Kegare.
  • Hero Killer: In his first appearance, he kills two Twelve Guardians, Narumi and Miku. Four years later, he kills Sakura too.
  • Immortal Immaturity: He's one of the oldest Basara, making him at least a few hundred years old. However, his behavior is closer to that of a toddler.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: In the final battle, Shizuru stabs Keiji's sword through Gabura's chest, killing him for good.
  • Laughing Mad: He's prone to laughing like a lunatic when he's "playing" with exorcists.
  • No Body Left Behind: His body disintegrates into small pieces and vanishes after Shizuru kills him.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: He has the mentality of a three-year-old and his favorite play is brutally murdering people.
  • Rasputinian Death: Keiji cuts off his arms and Shizuru blows up his head with a punch, yet that's not enough to kill him as he regenerates his head by absorbing yin energy. He's then pierced by Shizuru's rock spikes, hit by a Combination Attack from Hibari and Keiji, and finally stabbed with Keiji's sword by Shizuru, with the last attack killing Gabura for good.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: He shouts out "bang bang", "pew pew", "crackle crackle", and "boom" when attacking exorcists with his Impure Death Equip.
  • Self-Made Orphan: He killed his own parents after he got turned into a Kegare by his father's experiments.
  • Significant White Hair, Dark Skin: Gabura stands out among the dark-skinned Basara for being the only one with pure white hair. He's one of the most powerful Basara, but what's really unique about him is that he's the only known Basara to have originally been human.
  • Social Darwinist: He believes it's natural for him to kill humans. After all, the weak exist to be crushed by the strong are fated to die, according to him.
  • Stepford Smiler: Insane variety. His cheerful smile is part of his murderous Psychopathic Manchild nature.
  • Super-Scream: His scream can make his enemy's ears bleed.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: He had forgotten his childhood as a human because of the trauma of his mother trying to kill him after his father turned him into a Kegare. His memories returned during the Kegare invasion to the Tsuchimikado Island, after seeing a human parent and child reminds him of himself and his mother.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Long ago, he was a normal and good kid, until his father turned him into a Kegare and his mother tried to kill him. As a result, he turned into the insane and murderous monster he is today.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: His hair is white and he's possibly the most bloodthirsty of all the Basaras.

    Sakanashi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sakanashi.jpg

The second ranked Basara and the de facto leader of the Basara.

  • Back from the Dead: Four years after he and Arima killed each other, Sakanashi has been resurrected in a younger body.
  • Batman Gambit: Realizing that neither of the Twin Star Exorcists were human, with one of them being an outright Kegare, he planned to have all of the Exorcists alienate them. He would do this by revealing the truth of what they were to the wider Exorcist community, by forcing them to reveal their true forms. He succeed in this with the Basara attack on Tsuchimikado Island. By doing this he ensured that no Exorcist could ever officially support the Twin Star Exorcists in their destiny which would transition to the final stage of his plan; the complete annihilation of all life on Earth.
  • Big Bad: After the Tournament Arc, it gradually becomes clear Sakanashi is the main villain who acts as the leader of the Basara and instigator of big Kegare attacks on the Tsuchimikado Island that cause thousands of deaths for the exorcists.
  • Chosen Conception Partner: Long ago, Chinu asked Sakanashi to have sex with her, just to test out whether Kegare were able to reproduce naturally like humans. They eventually had several children and their descendants are the Kegare living on the Outcast Valley.
  • Energy Absorption: In the final battle, Sakanashi regains the technique Unchain, allowing him to absorb the exorcists' yang energy into himself and once again activate his Golden Super Mode.
  • Evil Plan: His ultimate plan is using Yuuto's cloned body to absorb the Twin Star Exorcists' power and create his own artificial Taizan Fukun that will give him the power to destroy humanity and rule over the Kegare, but Benio stops him when she destroys Yuuto's clone. He then plans to become the Taizan Fukun himself, driving the exorcists to stop him.
  • Fountain of Youth: After the second time skip, Sakanashi has the body of a kid after coming back to life. He regains his adult form in the final battle.
  • Golden Super Mode: The Yin-Yang Bomb technique Unchain transforms him into a form where his entire body is colored gold.
  • The Heavy: He shares with Yuuto and eventually overtakes this after Yuuto dies. Due to the King of the Kegare being currently sealed, Sakanashi is the strongest Kegare on the enemy side. His plans result in many deaths for the exorcists of Tsuchimikado Island and the final arc makes him into the main villain.
  • Heroic Willpower: A villainous example. In the final battle, the King of the Kegare briefly possesses Sakanashi's body, but he's able to regain control of himself and suppress the King of the Kegare, forcing it back to its seal.
  • Hero Killer: He manages to kill the Head Exorcist Arima.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: His bangs cover his right eye, signaling his manipulative and sinister nature.
  • Love Makes You Evil: When his lover Chinu revealed she was destined to produce the prophesied child with the Great Yang, Sakanashi brutally killed Chinu and the Great Yang, and he spent the next centuries trying to come up with a plan to destroy the King of the Kegare and take over the human world so only Kegare rule the Earth.
  • Manipulative Bastard: It's stated he rarely gets his hands dirty and instead uses other Basara to do the work for him.
  • Marked Change: His Golden Super Mode gives him marks in the face.
  • Mind Rape: He summons the power of the King of the Kegare to trap Benio in an illusion where her human feelings are replaced by the Great Yin's negative emotions and hatred for humanity. This causes Benio's mind to break and she's fully corrupted by the Great Yin.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: He wants the King of the Kegare gone as much as the exorcists do, since his goal is to create a world where he rules over all the Kegare and humanity is driven to extinction. The King of the Kegare will exterminate all life, both human and Kegare, if it gets released, which is counterproductive for Sakanashi's own Evil Plan.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He's said to be about as old as Chinu, making him around 1,000 years old.
  • Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can: Sakanashi is really a living container of Great Yang's soul. Once he's killed by Arima, Great Yang's soul is freed and enters Rokuro's body four years later.
  • Take Over the World: His goal is to eradicate humanity and conquer the world to make it into a paradise only for Kegare.
  • Villain Respect: He comes to recognize Arima as the greatest and most powerful exorcist he has ever known during their battle and genuinely laments they could have been friends if both were Kegare.
  • Yandere: As soon as he found out Chinu was going to be forced to leave him and produce the prophesied child with the Great Yang, Sakanashi went mad from anger and jealousy, not being able to stand being forced to give Chinu away to another man. In retaliation for what he saw as Chinu betraying him, he beheaded her and killed the Great Yang.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: His technique Unchain literally means Yin-Yang Annihilation. With this, he obtains a form that holds the ultimate power of yin and yang. He can do this because he stole Great Yang's soul from the Outcast Valley. He temporarily loses the power when the Great Yang's fragment is assimilated by Rokuro, but Sakanashi suddenly regains it in the final battle.

    Gaja (Unmarked Spoilers)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gaja_color.png

The fourth ranked Basara. He has a past history with Subaru Mitejima.

  • Above the Influence: He protected Subaru when she was weakened and stranded in Magano. She offered Rescue Sex to him in return, but he turned her down because he thought he would be taking advantage of her.
  • Always Save the Girl: He declares that if he had to choose between saving the human world or Subaru, he would choose Subaru without question.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: He teams up with Subaru against Benio's corrupted form.
  • Bitch Slap: When a nude Subaru tried to seduce him, Gaja rejected her with a slap to the face, feeling offended at Subaru apparently thinking he saved her only to get something in return.
  • Escaped from the Lab: He was one of the Kegare captured and experimented on by the Mitejima family. After a horde of Shinja Kegare destroyed the facility, Subaru found a dismembered Gaja. She nursed him until he regenerated his limbs and was able to escape.
  • Hey, You!: Subaru is midly annoyed with Gaja because he never calls her by her name, instead just saying "you" or "hey" when addressing her. He finally says Subaru's name when he confesses his feelings for her.
  • Ignore the Fanservice: After he saved her from dying at Magano, Subaru stripped naked in front of Gaja and offered her body to him. He blatantly rejected her with a Bitch Slap because he didn't want to have sex with Subaru when he thought she would only do it because she "owned" it to him.
  • I Owe You My Life: When he was missing his limbs and barely alive, Subaru nursed him until his limbs regenerated. In return, he saved Subaru when she became stranded in Magano and killed all the other Kegare that came to kill her while she was recovering from her injuries. He also helps Subaru when she fights the corrupted Benio because he's forever grateful to her for saving his life.
  • I Will Find You: Before Subaru dies, Gaja promises to find her again after she's reborn.
  • Interspecies Romance: With Subaru. He's a Kegare and she's a human, yet they have feelings for each other.
  • Love at First Sight: He has loved Subaru since the first time he saw her.
  • Magnetism Manipulation: His Magnetic Corpse ability enables him to control magnetic fields. He can magnetize the iron in objects and even in people's blood to bend the forces of attraction and repulsion to his will.
  • Monster/Slayer Romance: He's a Kegare who has mutual feelings for Subaru, an exorcist.
  • Reluctant Warrior: He really doesn't like fighting, but will do it in order to live.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Subaru. They're on enemy sides since Subaru is an exorcist and Gaja is a Kegare. They do eventually admit they love each other, but only moments before Subaru sacrifices her life to purify Benio's corrupted state.
  • Two-Faced: He had the left half of his face horribly burned by the scientists at the Mitejima facility.

    Suzu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suzu_twin_star_exorcists.png

Voiced By: Yuki Wakai (Japanese), Erica Lindbeck (English)

A female Basara that appears in the anime and in later stages of the manga.

  • Adaptational Weapon Swap: In the manga, Suzu primarily uses a biwa-like instrument to generate sound blasts. In the anime, her weapon is her hair, which can turn into scythes.
  • Canon Immigrant: She was one of the anime-original Basara until she was introduced in the manga after the second Time Skip.
  • Evil Is Hammy: In the anime, she bursts into heavy metal songs and dancing for the hell of it.

  • Girlish Pigtails: She ties her hair up in twintails.
  • Girl Posse: She has three Shinja Kegare that seemingly follow her everywhere with a stereo.
  • Hopeless Suitor: She's infatuated with Rokuro, but he's loyal to his wife Benio.
  • Hot Wings: In the anime, she's able to create fire wings on her back.
  • Interspecies Romance: Rokuro being the first human she has ever met sparks her interest in him.
  • It Amused Me: She admits her only motivation for anything is stopping herself from getting bored. She guides Rokuro and Kamui to the hidden Kegare village because Rokuro's plan to create peace between humans and Kegare sounds interesting to her, although she personally doesn't care what happens to either side.
  • It's Personal: In the final battle, Suzu is the only one who wants to kill the corrupted Benio out of hatred, since Benio killed Suzu's Shinja Kegare friends.
  • Laughably Evil: Her random and eccentric behavior makes her the most amusing Basara in the anime.
  • Love at First Sight: She immediately develops a crush on Rokuro during their first meeting.
  • Maniac Tongue: She sure likes to keep sticking out her tongue for no reason other than to look crazy.
  • Musical Assassin: She unleashes sound waves with her guitar.
  • Prehensile Hair: In the anime, she uses Impure Death Equip to transform the ends of her twin tails into scythes that can slice her targets in pieces.
  • Revenge: She wants to kill Benio as revenge for the corrupted Benio killing her Shinja Kegare friends.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She's a pinkhead with an energetic and fun-loving personality. Like Chinu, she's a rare Kegare who isn't hostile to humans and becomes an ally to Rokuro.
  • Rotten Rock & Roll:
    • Whenever she appears in the anime, she's bursting into heavy metal songs and breakdancing.
    • In the manga, the exorcists first find her while she's performing a rock concert to an "audience" of dead Kegare.
  • The Runaway: In the manga, she's actually one of the many Kegare born in Outcast Valley. She ran away from home because she was bored and disgusted by her fellow Kegare's cowardly way of living in hiding.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: She strips in front of Rokuro when they need to dive into a swamp and takes the chance to tease him, much to Rokuro's and Kamui's dismay.
  • Super-Hearing: She could hear Rokuro's and Mayura's exorcist squad approaching in Magano even though she was playing a very loud rock concert.
  • Walking Swimsuit Scene: She goes around in a bikini top.
  • Wild Card: She doesn't give a damn about humans or Kegare. She only sides with people who are doing something that she finds amusing.

    Beru (Unmarked Spoilers)

One of the Kegare who join Sakanashi's army after the second time skip. Like Suzu, she was born and raised in Outcast Valley.

  • Heel–Face Turn: She joined Sakanashi's Kegare army and participated in the attack on Tsuchimikado Island, resulting in the death of countless humans. After she meets Benio, Beru realizes the Twin Star Exorcists can create a world where humans and Kegare can coexist in peace, causing her to turn against Sakanashi and team up with the exorcists to stop him.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Beru has a large body and wears a bulky armor. When she takes off her helmet, she's revealed to be a woman, causing some surprised reactions.

    Asuha (Unmarked Spoilers)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/asuha_vol28.png

A Basara that lives in the Outcast Valley village. She's the wife of Sutara and the adoptive mother of Rokuro.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: She kneels down in front of the exorcists and begs them to join forces with Outcast Valley in order to save her adoptive son from Sakanashi.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: She and Sutara were forced to abandon Rokuro in Magano because hiding him in Outcast Valley was getting more difficult as he grew older. If Rokuro was discovered, he would have been killed by the Basara of their village, like the rest of Abe no Seimei's sons/clones.
  • Interspecies Adoption: Despite being Kegare, she and Sutara raised the human Rokuro in hiding during the latter's early childhood.
  • Motherly Side Plait: She's the adoptive mother to Rokuro and is pregnant with Sutara's biological child. She wears her hair over her right shoulder, as mothers typically do in anime and manga.
  • Parental Substitute: She helped raise Rokuro until he turned six years old.

Voiced by: Tomoaki Maeno (Japanese), Todd Haberkorn (English)

Rokuro's friend and fellow exorcist, who often acts as a surrogate big brother.

  • Action Dad: After the second Time Skip, he's now a proud father with a newborn son and continues his job as an exorcist fighting Kegare in the mainland. Although, he does feel upset that he missed his son's birth because he was out on a mission.
  • Adoptive Peer Parent: Ryougo is the closest thing to an adoptive father Rokuro has despite being only eleven years older than him.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His entire family was killed by a Kegare when he was just a child.
  • Happily Married: After the second Time Skip, he and Haruka are a happy married couple with a newborn son.
  • Official Couple: In the anime, he starts dating a fellow exorcist named Haruka and they eventually get engaged.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: An above average exorcist, but he pales when compared to the likes of Rokuro and Benio.
  • Parental Substitute: After Rokuro was brought to the Hinatsuki Dorm, Ryougo was made responsible of looking after all of Rokuro's needs, from bathing him to reading him bedtime stories. Zenkichi lampshaded Ryougo was more like a father figure than an older brother figure to Rokuro.

The daughter of Zenkichi, mother of Mayura, and the wife of Seigen. She is also a plant physiologist and currently lives in the mainland.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the manga, Yukari's hair color is blonde-green like Mayura. The anime, however, makes her hair lime green.
  • Amicable Exes: She doesn't bear any ill will towards her ex-husband because she understands he left the family wishing to keep her and their daughter safe. They eventually remarry after Seigen is removed from the position of the Twelve guardians.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: As Seigen states, she is scarier than a Kegare.
  • Berserk Button: Don't doubt Mayura's exorcists abilities. Seigen learned this the hard way.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Seigen, who is tormented by guilt for his past actions as an assassin, meets and falls in love with Yukari, the one who came to help Seigen after she sees his sad eyes in their first meeting.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Like her daughter, Yukari has large breasts. Seeing Yukari in a swimsuit caused envy in the flat-chested Saki.
  • Double Entendre: She won't have it when Seigen, embarrassingly, tries to refuse her plan to give him a "thorough scrub" and tells him that they have to "skip the formalities".
Yukari Don't be shy~ After all, tonight we skip the formalities"❤.
  • Eyes Always Shut: According to an extra, she never opens her eyes unless it's the night of the full moon, where her power surpasses Seigen's, or something serious is going on.
  • Fear of Thunder: According to her character profile, she hates lightning/thunder.
  • First Love: She's Seigen's first and only love.
  • Intimate Healing: Invoked by Yukari. Yukari and Seigen go on their first honeymoon, as Yukari wanted Seigen to take a break from his exorcist duties since he was feeling down. At the end, after a deep conversation, while they are in the open air bath she decides to give him a "thorough scrub".
Yukari: Now it's my turn...to give your body a thorough scrub(every inch from top to bottom).
Seigen: [looks away]...No thank you, I-
Yukari: Don't be shy~ after all tonight we skip the formalities❤.
  • Knuckle Cracking: When discussing with Yukari about Mayura's move to Tsuchimikado island Seigen expresses doubt about Mayura's abilities and her progress which causes Yukari to do this - telling Seigen to look her in the eyes.
  • Lap Pillow: In the novel, she gives one to Seigen after he passes out from Narumi's volleyball attack. Fortunately, because of Yukari's actions and presence, he was able to get a proper sleep without nightmares for the first time in years.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: In the chibi series, Shinnosuke wonders why Seigen and Yukari divorced and he concludes that Yukari must've had an affair, much to the extreme anger and denial of Seigen who overhears this.
  • Naked Freak-Out: Yukari internally freaks out when she goes to the open air bath with Seigen on their honeymoon. She gets over it at the end much.
  • Perpetual Smiler: She is always seen smiling.
  • Sexual Euphemism: "Tonight we skip the formalities" is what Yukari says as she is implying to Seigen that they will do the deed.
  • Shower of Love: Played with. While not in a shower it's heavily implied that they do it in the open air bath on their honeymoon.
  • Understanding Boyfriend: Gender-Inverted. Yukari is Seigen's wife and when he chooses to divorce her given his life as an exorcist Mayura reveals that they both understand that he is doing it to protect them.

Characters from 1,000 Years Ago

    Abe no Seimei
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/abe_no_seimei_sousei_manga.png

The most powerful exorcist to have ever existed. Everyone believes the child of the Twin Star Exorcists will be the reincarnation of Abe no Seimei, but the truth is Seimei is still alive at the lowest depths of Magano and has been keeping the King of the Kegare sealed for over a thousand years.

  • Adapted Out: She's excluded from the anime storyline, which features a different male Abe no Seimei.
  • The Ageless: According to Tenma, Abe no Seimei's body hasn't aged ever since she turned herself into the prison of the King of the Kegare over 1,000 years ago.
  • Badass Adorable: It's a surprise that the strongest exorcist who ever lived was a small girl cute as a button.
  • Barrier Maiden: She turned her own body into a cage for the King of the Kegare in order to prevent it from destroying the world.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Flashbacks show Abe no Seimei was a total sweetheart, but she showed a scary side to those that made her angry.
  • Compressed Hair: She somehow managed to fit her impressively long hair into a tall hat.
  • Doting Parent: When she finally properly meets Rokuro, the first thing she does is gushing about how handsome her son is.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: The characters are often surprised to find out the legendary exorcist Abe no Seimei was actually a little girl.
  • Explosive Breeder: She incubated multiple sons in the body of the King of the Kegare. The Basara of Outcast Valley stayed in the same place for a thousand years because all of Abe no Seimei's sons end up in their village. Even though they kept killing the babies, more came soon after.
  • The Gift: She had extremely powerful enchanted powers from birth.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: As in the popular myth, Abe no Seimei is half-kitsune which is the source of her immense spiritual power.
  • Hime Cut: She has blunt bangs, hip-length sidelocks and straight hair so long that it reaches the floor. She's also a high-ranking onmyouji of the Heian period.
  • Historical Gender Flip: Abe no Seimei is historically a man, but this manga's version is a girl who disguised herself as a boy.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: She's so small that she barely reaches Doman's waist.
  • Improbable Age: She became the greatest exorcist in history when she was merely a preteen girl.
  • Lady of War: Ashiya Doman commented how Abe no Seimei looked like she was gracefully dancing when tearing a horde of demons apart.
  • Little Miss Badass: The most powerful exorcist in history, capable of using unlimited enchanted powers and control over a thousand shikigami, was a cute little girl.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: She's revealed to be Rokuro's birth mother. More specifically, she created Rokuro's soul from her yang energy and made his body from her own cells by using the King of the Kegare as an incubator.
  • One-Woman Army: She could effortlessly defeat a large group of demons by herself.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: While her body was fused with the King of the Kegare, thousands of Abe no Seimei's sons were killed by Basara right after birth, as a way of preventing the Twin Star Exorcists from meeting. Some of her sons did manage to get past the Basara and meet the female Twin Star, but they still died before the Prophesied child could be born.
  • Perpetual Smiler: She always has a cheerful smile in her face.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: She was seriously pissed off when Doman peeped at her when she was taking a bath.
  • Raised as the Opposite Gender: Because of the extremely powerful enchanted powers she had from birth, Abe no Seimei/Haruko was raised as a man in order to become an exorcist. Only her family, her teachers and her rival Ashiya Doman knew she was a girl.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Abe no Seimei is currently over 1,000 years old despite still having the appearance of a small girl.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Flashbacks portray her as a benevolent and kindhearted girl with bright pink hair.
  • Single Sex Offspring: For the last thousand years, Abe no Seimei has spawned thousands of sons created from her yang energy. All of her children are male because they're potential male Twin Star Exorcists while the female one is born within Ashiya Doman's bloodline.
  • Supernaturally Young Parent: She's apparently Rokuro's birth mother despite looking like a little girl younger than him. This is because her body hasn't aged in over 1,000 years due to being the prison for the King of the Kegare.
  • Sweet Polly Oliver: She disguised herself as a boy to undergo exorcist training from a young age.
  • Tears of Joy: She's moved to tears when Rokuro acknowledges her as his mother and thanks her for giving birth to him.
  • Truly Single Parent: She gave birth to Rokuro through her yang energy. She couldn't give birth in the natural way because her body is fused with King of the Kegare at the depths of Magano. Turns out she made thousands of babies before Rokuro, but only a handful of them weren't killed by Basara right after their birth.
  • World's Best Warrior: Abe no Seimei is said to be the most powerful exorcist to have ever existed.

    Ashiya Doman
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ashiya_doman_sousei_manga.jpg

The legendary archrival of Abe no Seimei.

  • Accidental Pervert: He found out Abe no Seimei is a girl when he accidentally peeped at her taking a bath at a river.
  • Amazon Chaser: When he witnessed Abe no Seimei singlehandedly annihilate a horde of demons, all he could think about was just how beautiful she looked.
  • Barbarian Long Hair: He has long, disheveled hair like a mane that makes him look like a bandit.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: He has eyes with black sclerae.
  • Doting Grandparent: He acts like an indulging grandpa when he meets his distant descendant Benio. The first thing he does when he sees Benio is hugging her and he credits her beauty to his genes.
  • Facial Markings: He has a distinctive tattoo on his left cheek.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: He's twice the size of Abe no Seimei, who is a very short girl.
  • Maker of Monsters: He experimented on the human bodies that were corrupted by the King of the Kegare and extracted their yin energy to try and create a being made of yin that could challenge the King of the Kegare. His failed prototypes are known as the Kegare that the current exorcists fight.
  • Perma-Stubble: He has a bit of stubble on his chin.
  • Secret-Keeper: He was the only person besides Abe no Seimei's family and masters who knew she was a girl posing as a guy. Abe no Seimei made him swear to never tell anyone about her gender or she would rip his testicles off.
  • Sweet on Polly Oliver: He felt attracted to Abe no Seimei even before he found out she was a girl. After he discovered the truth by accident, it took him no time to fall for her.
  • Tsundere: He insisted on treating Abe no Seimei as his rival, but he couldn't stop himself from blushing whenever he saw her beautiful smile.

A small girl around five years old that Rokuro and Benio find in Magano. She calls him "Papa".

  • Blank Slate: This is why she couldn't speak in the beginning: she learned everything she knows during her stay with Rokuro and Benio.
  • Canon Foreigner: Neither her nor the Ame-no-mihashira appear in the manga. However, like a number of anime-original characters, she was designed by the original author.
  • Daddy's Girl: She loves her "Papa" very much.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wears her hair in a pair of twin braids because they look cute in a little girl like her.
  • Happily Adopted: Though the crew initially intended to find her family, Rokuro and Benio end up taking care of her as parents would. It gets lampshaded multiple times. In the picture book she drew, she finally calls Benio "Mama".
  • Meaningful Name: Her names means "Small Branch". She's actually a branch of the Ame-no-mihashira.
  • Moe Anthropomorphism: She's not human. She's a branch that was broken off the Ame-no-mihashira, and took a human form as a result.
  • Our Phlebotinum Child: Despite being a branch from the Ame-no-mihashira, she confirms that Rokuro really is her father before disappearing.
  • Token Mini-Moe: She looks five years old, although the rest of the cast is at least ten years older.
