Misused: Creator Chosen Casting

To-do list:

  • It was decided to expand the trope to include other creative figures such as directors and producers and remove the requirement that the casting choice be for an adaptation. Sandbox.Creator Chosen Casting is being used to rewrite the description to account for this.

    Original post
Note: This thread was proposed by MatthewWayne and Ayumi-chan.

Problem: Creator-Chosen Casting is supposed to be about casting choices that are made by a creator for an adaptation of their original work. However, the wick check shows that it's primarily being used for any instance of a director/showrunner picking somebody to star in their work, even if it's not an adaptation of anything, or if the actor wasn't chosen by the work's original creator for the adaptation.

Possible solutions:

  • Expand the trope to include other creative (directors, producers etc.) and remove the adaptation requirement.
  • Keep the old name and rewrite to make it about creatives (directors, producers etc.) choosing an actor to be casted in a role and rework the "original author of something chooses the cast for an adaptation" into its own trope.

Wick check:

Creator-Chosen Casting is about the original creator of a work (like the author of a book) choosing the cast for an adaptation. But some of the examples simply involve someone on any creative writing team choosing who plays/voices a part.

Side note: A good chunk of the examples were deleted after I finished the wick check.

Yeah, I wanted to get this TRS out there because there was someone trying to purge a lot of misused examples that I felt could be salvaged in some way.

I'm leaning more towards expanding personally, but both ideas are good options imo.

I've thought about this after initially holding off on voting, and I'm in favor of expanding. I don't think splitting is a good idea for something that has only 85 wicks, which is healthy on its own, but low enough that the fact that the wick check only picked up 13 wicks fitting the current adaptation-specific definition means splitting could potentially result in at least one of the two new pages being wick-starved.

I didn't know that, but the fact that whoever did it didn't bother waiting for the TRS thread to be made before dewicking ended up making things harder for us, which is mildly frustrating.

Edit: Since tracking those removed wicks would be time-consuming due to how many there were, maybe it would be worth just expanding Creator-Chosen Casting for now and then seeing if the removed wicks can be tracked down, and if that would raise the number for the narrower subtrope, it could be Yarded or taken to TLP.

IIRC this came up in ATT and the troper who reported it suspected that Paul A was removing examples as a means of preventing this trope from being TRSed. I don't know how true that is but it's still annoying.

Without looking at the misuse, I kinda feel like "director/showrunner chooses someone to play a role" is... kinda chairsy? Not to fall into the trap of ignoring No Trope Is Too Common (or, well, no trivia entry), but it's kind of expected that the director will have, at least, significant input in picking out the cast of their work. A creator favoring a particular actor playing a character in a different version of their work, though, possibly one the creator isn't otherwise directly involved in, that seems like a noteworthy phenomenon.

I suppose the broader trope could talk about an actor being targeted to play a role without an audition process, though that's pretty common too, or even a role being written with a particular actor in mind, though that might be getting into the territory of a different entry.

[up]Now that you mention that, maybe renaming without changing the definition would be preferable to the two original proposals.

[up][up] I dunno about that. There's a lot of moments where a director wants to pick somebody as their first choice, but the studio forces them to use someone else.

Thinking of expansion in another direction, when the original creator has a lot to say in how the adaptation is produced despite not being the director.

[up] That could work, but part of me's worried that it's going to attract God Never Said That due to them having the most creative control. Then again, if there are enough video interviews it might not be a problem.

[up][up] That's...not really expansion. That's how the trope is currently defined.

The big question is whether to include examples where a director/showrunner picks a very specific person to be in their work, and it goes through. Since those kinds of examples were the ones being purged by random users.

I think he meant re-casting prior to the adaptation airing, which is harder to pin down from a fan perspective. As Morgan said though it (the original definition) is a pretty chairsy concept, unless the creator allows someone else (like the composer) to choose stunt-doubles/extras in pivotal scenes. It's still a pretty big farce (as well as a random example I just put out there) and definitely not one I'm confident in, but under the right circumstances I don't the reductiveness of the trope across examples always has to be exactly the same.

[up] I really don't think it's chairsy (especially since it's Trivia, which can't really be chairsy by default). There's quite a number of productions where a creator wants to choose someone to be part of their production, but due to outside factors, they're unable to have them join. Whether it be scheduling conflicts, Executive Meddling, getting into an accident...it's not guaranteed that a director can get their first choice. With that in mind, I think the expansion idea is still fairly tropeworthy.
