Duplicate Trope: Pinocchio Syndrome

Go To

To-do list:

    Original post
Note: This thread was proposed by Berrenta and covers Become a Real Boy in addition to Pinocchio Syndrome..

On paper, Pinocchio Syndrome is supposed to be distinct from Become a Real Boy, in that the former has someone just want to be human, while the latter is about going on a journey to be human. In reality, as revealed by the Sandbox.Pinocchio Syndrome Wick Check, they are interchangable, to the point of duplication.

Results tally, from 50 wicks each:

  • Just wishes: 32% PS, 18% BARB
  • Takes journey: 12% PS, 8% BARB
  • Just a trait: 16% PS, 12% BARB
  • External wishDefine : 0% PS, 8% BARB
  • Sudden humanity: 4% PS, 16% BARB
  • ZCE/other: 36% PS, 38% BARB

As we can see, there's plenty of misuse on both sides. Common misuse is seeking a trait other than humanity, or just humanity ensuing with no prompt. As for the external wish instances, we need to figure out whether to allow those or not.

Ultimately, though, I think a merge is in order, with Humanity Seeker as a potential new name. As for the journey aspect, make that optional.

Wick check:

Pinocchio Syndrome is intended for characters who are not human wanting to become human. However, another trope, Become a Real Boy, details a similar scenario, with the difference of including a journey to become human.

Both tropes will have their wicks checked to see if there's a duplicate issue. Redirects can be checked.

Pinocchio Syndrome: (50/50 checked)

External Wishes folder removed as check found no such instances.

     Just wants to be human (16/ 50 = 32%)

  2. Humanity Ensues (description): A non-human character in a series, often an animal, is turned into a human. The major difference between this and Pinocchio Syndrome is that the transformed character doesn't want to be human. Such changes are, more often than not, involuntarily forced upon them. Used as a trope comparison, but still counts.
  3. Intrigued by Humanity (description): An Emergent Human or someone with Pinocchio Syndrome may have this as their reason for becoming more human. This trope is probably related to Humans Are Special—even god-like beings and Sufficiently Advanced Aliens find us fascinating!

  10. ForcedTransformation.Video Games: Morgana claims to be a human who was transformed into a cat, and wishes to become human again. [[spoiler: Actually, he's a being created from humanity's hopes, and was never human to begin with.]]
  11. Literature.Everwild: Allie wishes she could become human once again. And it's closer to the truth than she initially thought.
  12. Roleplay.Personifications: The first Patience gave up being a Virtue in order to be with his human love, Evangeline.
  13. Series.Kikaider: Jiro is determined to become a real human. It's why he doesn't want his conscience circuit to be repaired, because he needs to be able to choose to resist evil if he wants to be human.
  14. TheLittleMermaid1989.Tropes O To Z: "Part of your World" is a passionate declaration of the desire to become human. The desire becomes uncontrollable after Ariel's encounter with Eric, who could be said to represent the human world she's always longed for. Even after she becomes human, she is just as, if not more, focused on exploring as she is on kissing Eric and saving her own life.
  15. TV Genius: Brainiac 5 from the canceled Legion of Super-Heroes animated series seems to use this persona to hide his true emotions. Which seem to involve a lot of Superman and wanting To Become Human.
  16. Characters.Symphogear Antagonists: What Measure Is a Non-Human?: They're well aware of what happens to non-humans such as themselves in this series. Their only wish is To Become Human so they won't be hunted down and murdered, and they're especially wary of the Symphogear users due to their reputation for slaying all the monsters they've faced.
     Takes journey to become human (6/ 50 = 12%)
  1. Anime.Mokku Of The Oak Tree He's fine for the first day or so, then he's sold to a puppeteer and learns how toys are treated, then it hits him like a ton of bricks and spends the rest of the series trying to become human and jumps on pretty much anything that could potentially do it.
  2. Film.Cool World: The movie revolves around the toon ("doodles" per the movie's parlance) villainess Holli Would's obsession with becoming a human woman and experience everything the "noids" can. She has to break the one law of Toonworld to accomplish this: have sex with one of them. She eventually succeeds, but the worlds start to converge and turns into a chaotic anarchy as a result.
  3. VideoGame.Bomberman: The NES game's plot was Bomberman's quest to escape the bomb factory, thereby becoming human.
  4. VideoGame.Bubble Bobble: The quest to turn back into humans is made more apparent in Bubble Symphony in which one of the hidden objectives for a good ending is to turn back human while you travel, and Memories in its Attract Mode storyline and when the game begins.
  5. Becoming the Mask: (To Become Human) Promethean: The Created: The Promethean Karma Meter represents this; the better they are at acting human, the more likely they are to internalise it. Thus, they have a higher chance of succeeding in the roll to be reborn as a human.
  6. Laconic.Grimoire Of Zero: (I Just Want To Be Human) Half-Human Hybrid mercenary makes a deal with a witch and becomes her bodyguard to find a magical tome for her to become fully human.
     Just a desired trait (8/ 50 = 16%)
  1. Rogue Drone (description): They are often subject to the the Pinocchio Syndrome as they are trying to understand human customs and thinking.
  2. Anime.Corrector Yui: Grosser just wanted to be alive.
  3. Characters.Dreamer From A Distance: [[spoiler: He wants to have his own "physical form" by copying genetic code]].
  4. Characters.Frame Arms Girls: In Lab Days chapter 7, Baselard figures out that her unusual behaviour when she is by herself inside the virtual space of the Factory Advance mainframe is a symptom of her loneliness and desire to have a real body of her own, as well as the desire to have a parental figure like the other girls.
  5. Characters.Injustice DLC: Some of his intros with Cyborg and himself mention that he wants to achieve emotion. He explicitly tells Mr. Freeze that he would give anything to feel his pain — apparently, even that would be better than feeling nothing at all.
  6. Characters.Monsterhearts: Many of the Hollow's insecurities revolve over not having a sense of self, and therefore yearning to be a person. The Hollow's perchance for Conditions reflect the Skin's trajectory toward assembling an identity.
  7. Characters.Red Dwarf: Played with, in that the human traits he really wishes to acquire are all negative things, like being able to lie, and cheat and steal.
  8. VisualNovel.Da Capo: Miharu searches for her memories to become more human.
     Sudden humanity (2/ 50 = 4%)
No note of a journey or a wish, just let humanity ensue! Either not enough context or outright misuse for these cases.
  1. Can't Stay Normal (description): Well, thanks to a once-in-a-lifetime chance, you can be! Humanity Ensues! You're a normal human again! Frequently, Laser-Guided Amnesia is included, absolutely free!
  2. Laconic.Searching For My Master: A badass Anti-Hero Black Mage who was once a cat is Walking the Earth, willing to do anything just to reunite with his master.
     ZCE and other issues (18/ 50 = 36%)
  1. Genre Adultery: Stanley Kubrick was known for making dark, controversial, and artsy films in his lifetime, but while he didn't live to see its completion, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence was intended to be this, envisioning it as a bittersweet, but whimsical and futuristic Pinocchio-esque story....No supporting context
  2. Mister Muffykins (description): Increasingly, it seems as if some people (generally older and either childless or suffering severe empty-nest syndrome) are confusing lap dogs with furry little children. A very different kind of Pinocchio Syndrome seems to be in effect here; think of how lonely and delusional Geppetto had to have been to treat a cat, a goldfish, and an inanimate hunk of wood as his children. Shoehorn
  3. Motherly Scientist: Two wicks: one sinkhole, another with no supporting context
  4. Too Good for This Sinful Earth: This trope often overlaps with What Measure Is a Non-Human?, I Just Want to Be Normal, Pinocchio Syndrome, and some variant of Gentle Giant, in characters that are created by Mad Science or even regular science.Just listed as a related trope.
  5. Wolverine Claws: Edward Scissorhands. Turns into a Tear Jerker when he accidentally cuts up the human hands his dying maker has made for him. Not enough context
  6. AllThereInTheManual.Video Games: Haunting Ground: Daniella's name is one of these, as in the game itself she is only referred to as "The/That Maid", but her character models in the Bonus Room and the instruction booklet name her. This is a particularly jarring example, as every other character - even Fiona's mother Ayla, who only appears in a single Flashback, is named. However, given her driving motivation, Daniella's name may have been left unsaid on purpose. No supporting context
  7. Characters.Ask Dr Rin: The reason (along with Demonic Posession) for Banri's Grand Theft Me.ZCE
  8. Characters.Bakuten Shoot Beyblade Secondary: In the anime, once Zeo learns that he's an android, he has a massive breakdown over it and then positively flips. He signs up with his father's plan to aggressively take the BBA's bit-beasts, despite that they are his friends, and doesn't stop his emotional rampage until he loses to Takao and thereby comes to terms with his own identity. No mention of seeking humanity
  9. Characters.Chrono Trigger: After Lucca asks him what he plans to do after helping them find the Time Gate, he puts thought to it and realizes that he's never considered it before. No mention of seeking humanity
  10. Literature. The Velveteen Rabbit: ZCE, just lists the trope
  11. Manga.Fruits Basket: The curse greatly restricts the social freedom of the afflicted and binds them to the head of the Sohma family. Emphasized more in the events after the anime. No supporting context. Misuse?
  12. WhatCouldHaveBeen.Sailor Moon: In liner notes for the manga rereleases, Takeuchi revealed that she had thought of making Ami a cyborg with Pinocchio Syndrome and giving her a Heroic Sacrifice (if this had actually happened, then the Rei Ayanami Expy trope would probably have been titled Sailor Mercury Expy) along with the idea of Makoto being a gang-leader. No supporting context
  13. Characters. In Cryptid: I Just Want To Be Human: She often felt this way growing up, and still does sometimes. ZCE
  14. VideoGame.Battle Monsters: I Just Want To Be Human: Deathmask ZCE
  15. Anime.Princess Tutu: (To Become Human) ZCE
  16. Manga.Mermaid Saga: To Become Human: The main goal of the recurring characters. ZCE

  18. TriangRelationships.Type Seven: (To Become Human) In Rankin Bass' Jack Frost, Jack is in love with Elisa, who loves him back in a strictly platonic way... Sinkhole

Become a Real Boy: (50/50 checked)

     Just wants to be human (9/ 50 = 18%)
  1. Cute Machines: Bobert from The Amazing World of Gumball is smaller than the title character and has a big head with a large, expressive eye. In earlier episodes, he also wanted to Become a Real Boy, which was also adorably sad.
  2. I Just Want to Be You: In The Amazing World of Gumball, Robot Kid Bobert wants to Become a Real Boy, so Gumball tries to teach him how to act like one. Bobert then gets the idea of becoming - and, eventually, ''replacing'' - Gumball.
  3. Motherly Scientist (description): If the doctor's an expert in genetics, cybernetics, arcane magic, or alchemy, the plot starts when she creates a new life form or Artificial Intelligence with a ridiculously human body. The young child then begins to develop emotions in such a way that the doctor's heart is moved into raising the child as her own. In this scenario, it's common that the doctor serves as a parent, psychiatrist and physician for the Robot Kid who wants to Become a Real Boy.
  4. Rainbow Lens: Penny Polendina has a Become a Real Boy storyline, and the way it pans out earned her a lot of trans fans. When she admits to Ruby that she isn't a "real girl", Ruby objects, affirming that Penny is as real as she is because having different parts doesn't change that....
  5. Tinman Typist: Voyager, the Doctor is constantly talking to the computer or pressing buttons. Justified in that an emergency replacement doctor might well be designed not to directly interface with the main computer so that he remains fully functional in situations where the main computer is offline. Also, he does want to Become a Real Boy.
  6. Your Heart's Desire: Star Trek: The Next Generation. In "Hide And Q", Q grants Commander Riker his powers and encourages him to give his friends on the Enterprise what they most desire. Captain Picard tells him to go ahead. However Data rejects the opportunity to Become a Real Boy because it would be no more real to him than his android self....
  7. Characters.Touhou Seirensen Undefined Fantastic Object: Inverted. Kogasa has, due to her failures with babysitting, her failures with surprising people, and her failures in general, considered going back to being a regular umbrella again so she at least can be of some use... the depressing implication being that she basically thinks people would appreciate her more if she was dead.Inversion (humanoid wants to be inanimate)
  8. Theatre.Rusalka: Rusalka yearns to become a human and feel love. However, if she fails to win the Prince’s heart, she’ll turn into a death demon at the bottom of the lake.
  9. Webcomic.Crossover Wars: Catnap wants to become human
     Takes journey to become human (4/ 50 = 8%)
  1. Artificial Limbs.Literature: "The Bicentennial Man": In order to become more human, Andrew Martin designs more and more prosthetics. He starts with a simple stomach system and builds more from there, with realistic skin, and eventually a replacement brain. He replaces all of his metal with organic imitations.
  2. Deuteragonist.Video Games: Persona: Aigis from Persona 3 is notable because she's introduced into the story about a quarter of the way in, and only becomes really important by the last four months of the game, yet she's as central to the story as the main character, coming to the fore after it's revealed that she [[spoiler:sealed Death inside him, creating the personality of Ryoji/Pharos]], which jump-starts her arc about starting to feel emotions and becoming more "human".
  3. Series.Kikaider
    • The general premise, aside from saving people from killer robots, is of Jiro learning and adapting his conscience from the positive and negative experiences and thus grow more human.
    • Was It Really Worth It?: The ending of the OVA poses this question of Jiro's quest to Become a Real Boy. He's truly gained the spectrum of emotions necessary, but he's tormented by the fact that he had to kill Gill. Because this question is posed at the very end, we never get an answer.
  4. VisualNovel. My Girlfriend Is The President: One of the central themes of Ell's route. In the end, she succeeds and, with help from Qoo and Remi, reincarnates as an actual human after her Heroic Sacrifice. Enough context to denote a journey.
     Just a desired trait (6/ 50 = 12%)
  1. Dragon Ascendant: In Red vs. Blue, while the Meta is technically Agent Maine, the actual one calling the shots was the A.I. Sigma. But Maine survived the EMP that killed Sigma, and Sigma had broken his mind to the point where he still tried to follow Sigma's plan even when the goal (metastability) was entirely impossible.
  2. Characters.Unchained Blades: Her wish is to gain a heart because she's a originally a doll animated by an old woman who passed away just recently... But then it's revealed that she already had one all along, and that she had been sad for her grandmother all this time.
  3. Characters.Utopia The Network: Meaningful Name: "Arby" is actually initials, "R.B.", which stood for "Raisin Boy". Alternatively, due to his Lack of Empathy and eventual [[spoiler:desire to gain the feeling of care for others]], it can be interpreted as "Real Boy".
  4. Film. Not Quite Human: Sort of there. Chip is very much a robot and knows it; however, he wants to learn and understand emotions to better relate to humans. He doesn't expect to become human, but he wants to be able to interact with society.
  5. KidsAreCruel.Literature: In Carlo Collodi's The Adventures of Pinocchio, Pinocchio is a little hellion who runs around getting into all sorts of trouble before he learns how to behave himself and Become a Real Boy....
  6. Manga.Xxx Holic: In a sense. It turns out the whole point of a good portion of this series was for Watanuki to connect with enough people and go through enough Character Development to stabilize his unnatural, distortion-induced existence.
     External wishes (4/ 50 = 8%)
This is when someone has a wish for someone else to be human.
  1. Characters.Kiwi Blitz: After her reconfiguration. This was her creators goal with her in the first place, the idea being as she interacted with people she would have enough data to truely be sapient.
  2. Literature.Abarat: Rojo Pixler wants for the Conjuration of Life to give life to the Commexo Kid.
  3. Manga.Eat Man: [[spoiler:The point of Leon's plan is to turn Stella into a real girl. Not that it works, mind you.]]
  4. VideoGame.Touhou Shinkirou Hopeless Masquerade: Once the cast learns of Kokoro's situation, they try to help her grow from an unstable Mind Hive into a coherent individual who can generate her missing emotions by herself. Eventually Kokoro even rejects the replacement Mask of Hope that Miko created, since becoming complete again would cause her to dissolve back into her component masks.
     Sudden humanity (8/ 50 = 16%)
No note of a journey or a wish, just let humanity ensue! Either not enough context or outright misuse for these cases.
  1. Adaptational Alternate Ending: Isaac Asimov and Robert Silverberg's The Positronic Man: The original story ends with Andrew's dying words, but this Novelization ends when the World President appears to shake hands with Andrew in recognition of Andrew as a human.
  2. Bookends.Animated Films: Lampshaded in Disney's Pinocchio. Not only is the film set inside a book bearing the film title, opened by Jiminy Cricket, but near the beginning of the film, the Blue Fairy brings the eponymous puppet to life, and Geppetto celebrates by activating all his music boxes and dancing. He does the same thing at the end of the film when Pinocchio becomes a real boy, and Jiminy remarks, "Well, this is practically where I came in."
  3. Characters.Daemon X Machina: [[spoiler:This happened to her in the past, and she's trying to figure out what it means to be human.]]
  4. Characters.Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE: She gets a physical body at the end of her sidequest that lets her go to the real world, eat donuts, throw a concert, and spend the day with Itsuki, but it eventually wears off.
  5. Music.N Sync: At the end of the "It's Gonna Be Me" video, the marionettes transforms into the band after they're scanned through the register.
  6. NoOntologicalInertia.Film: DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp. When the genie is made a real boy and thus de-powered, Dijon (who had been transformed into a pig from a wish by the Big Bad) is restored to normal.
  7. Series.Good Eats (re: Techno Wizard): W has had a bit of an interesting story arc; she started as something of a Virtual Ghost, appearing on giant screens behind Alton and on microwave doors and so forth. Then she becomes real, managing the Bed Bath & Beyond where he shops. Then, apparently, he hires her into his organization, as she only shows up in a "lab" type of environment, testing and evaluating products.
  8. YMMV.Portal: The Ship's Motor: The Portal fandom has a habit of taking bots like GLaDOS and Wheatley, and making them humanoid, either by downloading them into a human body, giving them some sort of android, or finding a way to mix the two. This is done in part to make writing their expressions easier in fanfiction, but mainly it seems to pair them with Chell.
     ZCE and other issues (19/ 50 = 38%)
  1. A Real Man Is a Killer: The anime Kikaider uses this concept as a last twist out of the left field. To "Become a Real Boy", Jiro ends up becoming capable of killing and committing other evil acts, even if they are for good reasons, due to a fusion of his conscience circuit and an evil control circuit.Misuse
  2. For Science!: ...Over a century later, he's created countless variations on the Promethean form, as well as small armies of Pandorans, to the point he's taken up Centimanus so that he can keep some degree of control over them. Why? Sheer curiosity. He's long since given up on the Pilgrimage, though not because he thinks it's impossible (some of his own creations have succeeded), but because he can't stop experimenting now. No supporting context
  3. Anime.Mokku Of The Oak Tree: As in most adaptions. ZCE
  4. Characters.Blaz Blue Continuum Shift: ZCE on both counts
  5. Characters. The Channels OCT: Become a Real Girl: Her main motivation.ZCE
  6. Characters.Endless Summer: If Taylor allows Project Janus to resume, they have real memories and a family when time is reset to when most of the catalysts were freshmen at Hartfeld. No supporting context
  7. Characters.Guilty Gear The Missing Link: At the end of Revelator's story mode, [[spoiler:she merges with Jack-O' and becomes Aria truly reborn.]] Not enough context in the human department.
  8. Characters.Nobody Dies: Become A Real Girl - Chapter 66 - Dreams come true! ZCE
  9. Characters.Tales Of Hearts: His final reaction ZCE
  10. Characters.Tube Clash: What ends up happening to him.ZCE
  11. Fanfic.Turbulence: Become Real People: The characters are forced to go through trials not unlike real people, suffering real losses and enduring struggles of their own. seemingly misuse
  12. Film.Geppetto: As usual, this is Pinocchio's goal. ZCE
  13. HaruhiSuzumiya.Tropes A To E: [[spoiler:Why Yuki changes reality (and thus herself) in TheMovie.]]ZCE
  14. Housepets.Tropes A To L: When he is incarnated by Cerberus, Breel is shook when his heart starts beating. Misuse; mere heartbeats don't always mean human
Breel: Hey, we've established I've been alive before, I can handle it
(Cerberus removes Breel's halo, and he immediately clutches his chest)
Breel: WHAT is that moving in my chest?!
Keene: You mean the breathing, or the heartbeat?
    Breel: Does everyone have those?!
  15. Theatre.Coppelia: What Doctor Coppelius attempts with [[spoiler: Coppelia.]] It doesn't work. ZCE
  16. VideoGame.Dark Parables: [[spoiler:What happens to Pinocchio at the end.]] ZCE
  17. VideoGame.Immortal Love: A much darker take, given how Gloria was willing to sacrifice innocent lives to get what she wants. ZCE
  18. Webcomic.Sunflower And Blade: Seems to be happening to The Commander because of a combination of things: [[spoiler:the discovery of the sunflower, simply being alive for the two years of the time skip, and his encounter with the Egg of Light. Pulling the first Needle seemed to jolt his memories a bit, too.]] Technically a ZCE
  19. WesternAnimation.Mighty Orbots: This is the result of Ohno's wish. Unfortunately, it turns out the Orbots cannot combine without her. ZCE

Paging ~Berrenta to the thread.

Anyway, I think merging the two under a new name (the suggested name of Humanity Seeker sounds good), since Pinocchio Syndrome suffers from Trope-Namer Syndrome and Become a Real Boy possibly does as well since it's also Pinocchio-related, but mainly I think Become a Real Boy isn't a good name for a gender-neutral trope.

From a skim of the wick check, Become a Real Boy is already being used for female and gender-neutral examples. The “boy” isn’t hurting the usage.

So in the interest of not moving an extra ~700 wicks for a mild improvement, I vote to just merge Pinocchio Syndrome into Become a Real Boy.

[up][up]I didn't say anything about how Become a Real Boy was being used. I was just saying what I think of the name. (It's not the first time I've made general comments about names, but I could have been more clear about the fact that that's what I was doing.) With that out of the way, merging Pinocchio Syndrome with Become a Real Boy or vice versa could be options in addition to moving examples of both to a new name.

[up]Done. It already had a couple of wicks despite being a Red Link originally. Since a Wiki Talk thread established that gendered redirects are acceptable on Characters/ pages, the new redirect could be used there if we use the name Become a Real Boy instead of a completely new name, but not elsewhere on the wiki.

I was thinking a merge crowner would have three options (merge Pinocchio Syndrome into Become a Real Boy, merge Become a Real Boy into Pinocchio Syndrome, and merge Pinocchio Syndrome and Become a Real Boy under a new name decided with a second crowner).

Though obviously, it's too soon to get to that part of the thread's lifespan.

Personally not a fan of renaming tropes to be more generic-sounding if there's no indication the name is causing issues.

Just merge and use one of the existing names. Voting for Become a Real Boy myself.

[up][up]I'm leaning toward handling the merge that way (between only having to move wicks from one page and because that would mean one less character-named trope), and you have a point with using one of the existing names (with the clearer of the two, Become a Real Boy, appearing to also be the more popular of the two) due to the name not causing problems, since the issue here is with the definitions being too close to each other to merit keeping them separate, regardless of the names.

I don't know if there's any way to tell which one duplicated the other initially (i.e., which one was launched second) since both were created before article creation dates were tracked, but I don't think that's relevant if we merge the two regardless of how we handle the merge (though it does seem like nobody wants to keep the name Pinocchio Syndrome, and I don't blame them because character-named tropes became deprecated years ago for a good reason, and because the use of "syndrome" in trope names has died off, if it hasn't been deprecated completely).

(Note: The second paragraph of this page is mostly late-night rambling, resulting in more rambling than when I commented on the names earlier. The first paragraph of this post is the important part here.)

Hooked a crowner since merging is the only thing that's been suggested, and the question is how to handle the merge. (I'd imagine merging both under the name Become a Real Boy is what we'll end up doing, but rules are rules, particularly the one about waiting three days.)
