Hindsight Cleanup

Go To

The Hindsight tropes, Hilarious in Hindsight, Harsher in Hindsight, and Heartwarming in Hindsight, are among the most misused Audience Reaction tropes on this site. Many people don't understand that the tropes require more than just "This happened, so that happened", and end up adding examples which either lack connection or the substance that makes them funny/serious/not-so-funny/heartwarming. Some of them may be suited better for other tropes (ex: Life Imitates Art), while some may not belong on TV Tropes at all (such as ones involving politicians, due to Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment).

Please report any Hindsight example that you feel are questionable, and we'll analyze them to see if they are actually examples or not.

Remember that the Hindsight tropes are Audience Reactions. That means if an example under review discusses significant fan response pointing out the hindsight, the example can't be cut solely for being too tenuous for this thread.

    Common NOT in Hindsight examples
  • Creator's character/portrayal dies in work and then creator dies in real life, unless their fictional death is closely similar to their real one (such as Billy Bob Joe portraying a character who dies from pancreatic cancer, then Billy Bob dies from pancreatic cancer himself)
  • Mundane word related to something terrible (such as "corona" or "Epstein") unless there's more to the connection (such as someone named "Corona" having the flu)
  • Creator appears in work then becomes more controversial later on.
  • A common event (such as a typical natural disaster) happens in work, then happens in real life (unless they are closely similar, such as the event happening to the same area in both reality and fiction around the same time) For once, not everything related to disease has to do with COVID-19, not everything related to racism and Police Brutality has to do with George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, and not everything related to sexual abuse has to do with #MeToo.
  • A common/generic concept was used in this work and then later reused in that work (too loose for a connection, unless the concept is so unique it's identified with the work)
  • Two actors appear together then do so in another work
  • Hindsight examples involving recent events, due to them often being shoehorns. Specifically:
    • COVID-19 examples, before 75% of the population has returned to normal
    • George Floyd/2020 Black Lives Matter examples, before protests have declined
  • Examples which fall guilty of Older Than They Think, such as "Make X Great Again" slogans. Aside from violating the ROCEJ, this slogan has been in use since the 1940s.
  • Characters using slurs which are treated as annoying at worst in the work, but is now harsher due to how severe the slur is made now. Discrimination has always existed with that slur. (May qualify for Values Dissonance if work is at least 20 years old.)

Note: As of January 2022, "Funny Aneurysm" Moment is no longer separate from Harsher in Hindsight.
  • The former redirects to the latter and all wicks to the former (with the exception of ones on archive pages and the YMMV Redirects index) must either be moved to the latter (if they're valid) or removed (if they're invalid).
  • The subpages for the former are still accessible from this page. After a subpage for "Funny Aneurysm" Moment has been completely cleaned up, turn it into a redirect to the Harsher in Hindsight subpage for the same medium to preserve inbounds.

[up]I agree the last one doesn't sound like Hindsight, though I think it might be Fridge Logic instead. I additionally agree that all the others (sans the second entry) are Fan Myopia. Also, the third one (if I remember Madoka Magica well enough) and the fourth examples would be harsh rather than comedic if they weren't FM.

[up] I think the last one could actually be a Dub-Induced Plot Hole (though the 4Kids dub only did the first season so they never got to the season where they actually sell flowers.) I've only seen the Japanese version so I'm not sure if the line is explained in the dub why flowers don't pay the bills.

Some YMMV Pages where the only entry is a single Hindsight:

Diagnosis Murder S 7 E 1 The Roast

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: One of the characters mocks Tim Conrad for voicing a cartoon worm. That same year, Tim Conway would begin voicing one of his most famous roles, Barnacle Boy.
Actor shoehorn, Barnacle Boy isn't a worm

Only Fools And Horses S 7 E 08 Miami Twice Part Two Oh To Be In England

Go Princess Pretty Cure Ep 36

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The marine vet Minami meets is named Asuka.
Asuka is a common Japanese name, multiple characters in a series being named that isn't really notable

There Would Be No Second Chance

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: One of the stalkers in multi-ethnic team is called Snow Leopard, and he was a huge fan of Metro 2033 before the war. Several years later, the actual novel named Snow Leopard would come out in series, set in Tatarstan.
Since it seems this work was originally supposed to be in Metro 2033 Universe, the novel being named Snow Leopard may be an intentional reference

The Strange Revenge Of Lena Luthor

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Decades after this story was published, another Lena Luthor would become equally furious at her Supergirl for keeping secrets from her.
The writers of Supergirl were probably adapting that comic, making it an intentional refrence

Should all these entries be cut and their pages sent to the cutlist?

This was just added to the YMMV page for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Conflict of Interest:

  • The final villain being Carlo Luciano, becomes this as he's the first Ace Attorney fan villain to fake his death before Richard Gunner.

Isn't "villain Faking the Dead" too tenuous a similarity for Hindsight, even if it is a fan work of the same franchise? Also, and this is technically unrelated to Hindsight, but the entry also violates our "Don't add spoilers for completely separate works" rule by naming the Hidden Villain of a different work, even under a spoiler tag.

[up](x3) Besides what you said, I feel the first, third, and maybe the fourth are Fan Myopia.

[up]I feel that many works have an evil-doer decide to fake their death so I don't think that by itself is enough for a Hindsight example.

[up][up] It isn't even the first time an Ace Attorney villain faked their death. This was a plot point in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Trials and Tribulations, way back in 2004.

Regarding There Would be No Second Chance novel, mentioned above.

I messed up due to sketchy memory, and Metro 2033 novel was named White Snow Leopard, so it's certainly not a reference (just checked, and white snow leopard is the coat of arms of Tatarstan); especially since novels have next to zero in common. Plus, in Russian, "snow leopard" is one word, either "burs" or "irbis" (former may be accompanied by "snow"), so it's "snow burs" and "white burs".

But if that mistake is corrected, I'm not sure whether it would still qualify (are the similarities strong enough to count?). Even if it does get deleted, let it at least be for correct reason.

Sentai Page trio

    open/close all folders

    Kiramager
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Because of Juru's actor coming down with COVID-19 in late March, the two episode mini-arc that has Juru overworked to the point of collapsing out of exhaustion hits harder, especially the scenes of him recuperating in bed. Covid shoehorn, as he got sick due to working too hard, not due to any virus
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The previous series had Another Ghost's sister cast as the Pink Ranger. This time, we have Kamen Rider Specters sister cast as Pink. Fan Myopia (Rider Fan Myopia is very common on Sentai pages) and actor stuff too
    • The Yellow and Pink Rangers this time are a pro gamer and a doctor, respectively. There was a Kamen Rider who was both at once. Evidently, Emu's been getting careless with the Mighty Brothers XX Gashat. Fan Myopia and there have been rangers who were doctors and gamers before this series
    • Mabushina's name falls a letter short from the Big Bad villainess of a parody Sentai. Not hindsight, Akibaranger came first
    • In a previous show, we had the blue ranger calling the red ranger as his lord all the time. Kiramager's episode 3 has the positions reversed. Not Hindsight, Shinkenger came first
    • Due to the series title, many viewers made jokes about Mashin Chaser joining the show. This is now more hilarious that the mecha, King Express, is similar to the Ride Crosser in his seriesnote . Rider Fan Myopia
    • An alien leader from a far distant galaxy has somehow visited Earth a few times, just to handpick it as the place to send his child in the event of his demise and the death of his world - are we talking about Oradin or Jor-El? Not hindsight, Jor El existed well before Kiramager
    • Sena and her team are seen wearing SCRTC-branded gear from time to time in the early episodes. 20-or-so episodes later, we get Miki and Natsume making appearances in Episode 27 - with their original actors no less! As a bonus, the head writer came back for the episode! Not hindsight, Gekiranger came first, the SCRTC gear should be a Shout-Out instead
    • A Facebook post in early November joked that if Kiramager created a Golf Jamen, it would be the most powerful monster in existence.note  Lo and behold, the preview for #35 shows the MotW to be a golf-themed Jamenshi. Seems valid
      Comment: "TOEI WHAT THE FUCK"

    Gobusters
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Apparently the Magi Yellow outfit can promote its actor to gold status (before Hiroya Matsumoto/Tsubasa returned as Beet Buster, Nic Sampson/Chip returned as the Sentinel Knight.) actor
    • Go-Buster Oh didn't actually need Kamen Rider Fourze's Super Switches to execute a Rider Kick. Sentai/Rider Fan Myopia
    • In #17, Jin sends out a loud "Oh, shit". It was funny but then we remember this. Not hindsight, Magiranger came first
    • #21. Ryuji gets a handle on his "berserk" side by making it a part of himself. Not hindsight, Incredible Hulk came first
    • Since the 'exporting' of Super Sentai internationally under the name Power Rangers is old news by now in Japan, the whole premise of Rangers protecting their world's power supply (the whole Enetron shebang) may have been Toei's attempt to create literal Power Rangers. feels like a shoehorn
    • One old rumor before Go-Busters aired was that Gavan would be the teams mentor. Thirty episodes later, guess who appears? Well...Mind you, not the one we were thinking of.
    • In #33, the Powered Custom Super Mode involves an addon to the morpher that fuses our heroes bodily with their Buddyroid partners... kinda like CycloneJokerXtreme. As if reinforcing this, Red sticks to close-quarter combat (like CycloneJoker), Blue summons a girder that he uses like a staff (HeatMetal), and Yellow sticks with the shooting (LunaTrigger)! Sentai/Rider Fan Myopia
    • Ryuji was not the first blue ranger to have problems with overheating. Gosei Blue had in one episode too and, while Ryuji gets psychotic, Hyde gets HILARIOUS. Not Hindsight, Goseiger came first
    • The show's overall theme is about how perfection is overrated and that having no flaws can make something boring. Cue Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger's main protagonist Daigo Kiryu, an Ace who's so perfect, it's stated by Tessai that his one major flaw is that he has no flaws. Whether King subverts or exemplifies Go-Busters is up to the individual person to decide. unsure
    • Go-Busters being rife with references to Power Rangers, particularly "It's Morphin Time!", is hilarious when the source material for the franchise's progenitor appeared in Kyōryūger vs. Go-Busters. Feels like a shoehorn since Zyuranger was already part of the same franchise as Go Busters, and Zyuranger isn't the only former team in that movie
    • Mission 41 has a thief, who breaks into safes, wears disguises, leaves cards behind bragging about robbing, has jazzy music, can do martial arts, and tries to lure a monster out because she feels it's her job to not let it hurt civilians. Plus, she justifies thieving because she only steals from bad people. Sounds like a prototype for Lupinrangers. Phantom Thief is a common archtype
    • Mission 42 has a flying train that comes out of the sky whenever it feeels like it, and picks up people with a particular personality trait. Sounds a lot like a prototype of ToQger. feels like a shoehorn, there's other trains in other Sentai series
    • One of the movies for this series concerns an Alternate Universe version of the team called Doubutsu Sentai Go-Busters. It would only be a few years later that an actual Doubutsu Sentai started making the rounds. unsure
    • The controversy regarding the show being skipped in favor of adapting Kyoryuger as Power Rangers, after the announcement of Power Rangers Beast Morphers, which means that instead of being the first series since Dairanger not to be adapted, Go-Busters is now the first season to be adapted out of order. shoehorn, since now theres other unadapted pr series
    • Among all the Power Rangers references, fans compared the premise and villains to those of Power Rangers RPM in particular. Power Rangers Beast Morphers would not only feature cameos from RPM characters, but would be revealed to be a full blown Stealth Sequel in its final episodes, with Big Bad Evox being revealed to be a reincarnated Venjix. seems ok

    Zenkaiger
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In episode 21, Gege thinks of Flint fondly unlike his angered fellow Tozitend elites. His voice actor Tatsuhisa Suzuki was revealed to be cheating on his wife not long after this, which resulted in his going on hiatus and eventual retirement from Gege's role. actor does bad thing shoehorn, Gege did not cheat on his wife so doesn't apply
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • A Super Sentai show with a non-Red lead applies this to the Kyoryuger/ToQger Hand-Off sequence, in which ToQ #1 initially introduces himself to Kyoryu Red as a Pink before revealing himself as a natural Red. Those came first so not hindsight, also Zenkaiger isn't pink
    • After the heroic Kikainoids were unveiled, fans compared them to the Taros in Kamen Rider Den-O, due to being a quirky, color-coded, quartet that doesn't require any human actors, should the lead hero be unavailable. Then the Taros were confirmed to appear in Kamen Rider Saber + Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger Super Hero Senki. Rider/Sentai Fan Myopia
    • There's a notable Social Media Website user in the Tokusatsu fandom community who goes by the username GokaiOrange who, in spite of his name being a reference to the Gokaigers, has an avatar that looks like an orange Battle Japan. Now with this series, we have Twokaizer fighting against Stacaesar, the former of which looks like a golden Gokaiger, while the latter looks like an evil Battle Japan. Honestly one of the worst shoehorns I've ever seen, Fan Myopia in regards to this Twitter user since he only has 500 followers, neither Twokaizer and Stacaesar are orange, and Gokai Orange isn't evil like Stacaesar.
    • Episode 17 has the Over-Time fansubs twist Zenkai Juran and Zenkai Magine's Otsukare-san Vulcan!/"Good work-Sun Vulcan!" line into a Beatles reference with "Here comes the Sun Vulcan!", unknowingly foreshadowing that the following two episodes would actually have the show itself make blatant Beatles shout outs, with Great Renai Wald's Love Me Do attack in episode 18 and a beetle-based Wald attacking a group of victims doing the Abbey Road Crossing in episode 19. Unsure since this is troping a fansub and not the official work
    • Because of Spell My Name With An S prevalent in most Super Sentai, certain teams had fans insistently prefer to spell their titles with a "J" according to pronunciation despite their name officially starting with a "Z" (Such as "Jyuden" for Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger or "Jyuohger" for Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger). Here, one of the lead characters is explicitly named "Juran" with a "J"note , but Fan Nickname now dictates such should be spelt with a "Z" as "Zyuran" instead, to make his homage to Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger even more blatant. unsure, seems like troping the fandom and not the work
    • Episode 18 has the Zenkaigers reenact the ending of Jetman, a series written by Toshiki Inoue. Come the next season, Donbrothers, not only is Inoue the main writer for it, but it also acts as a semi-sequel TO Zenkaiger. Shoehorn since the show references all other past Sentai Seasons too, meaning that any Sentai writer who did the next series would be referenced

Elena Of Avalor feels like it's filled with actor stuff and Fan Myopia:

    open/close all folders

    Hilarious
  • In The Book of Life, Grandma Sanchez was voiced by Grey DeLisle while young Manolo had Emil Bastien Bouffard as his voice actor. Cut to the episode "Wizard In Training" for this series, which also has Spanish influence, where Olivia's older brother is voiced by Emil while Grey voices their mother. In essence, it's a similar dynamic aged slightly down.
    actor stuff
  • There's been a good amount of fanfiction that depicts Belle as a captain. Cut to the episode "Captain Turner Returns", in which Julie Nathanson, Belle's current voice actress, voices Naomi's mother, Captain Scarlett Turner.
    actor stuff
  • Eden Espinosa, the voice of Orizaba, was the actress of Elphaba, who had been compared to Idina Menzel's role of Elsa due to Eden being Idina's The Other Darrin as well as the similarities between Elphaba and Elsa. Eden later gets to play Cassandra, a character in Frozen's "sister" movie.
    actor stuff
  • In "The Island of Youth", Elena says to Esteban that he's her favorite cousin, to which he points out that he's her only cousin. Later in "Song of the Sirenas", we meet Cristobal, Elena's cousin from the other side of the family, but with what happens in the episode, Esteban might as well be her only cousin.
    unsure, havent seen this episode
  • In "A Spy In The Palace", Carla sings about wanting a palace. Well, much later, Myrna Velasco's character lives in a palace... or, well... high tower, which is close enough.
    actor stuff
  • Sofia the First is popular in Spain, where it just so happens that they have a queen named Sofia. Her eldest daughter's name? Elena. And part of Elena's extended name is Isabel.
    shoehorn
  • Gina Rodriguez voices Princess Marisa, whose mother is voiced by Rita Moreno, the original Carmen Sandiego. Guess where Gina Rodriguez ended up? For an added bonus, Gina Rodriguez was a fan of Rita Moreno and the original series growing up, so Rita portraying Gina's mother in this series makes it all the more awesome for being a dream come true and hilarious.
    actor stuff
  • Auli'i Cravalho playing Veronica, considering how often Elena and Moana are grouped together in marketing and the fandom, as well as Moana being the only Disney Princess who wasn't brought up at all during the run of Sofia the First.
    actor stuff
  • Complaints that Elena wasn't included in the Disney Princess scenes in Ralph Breaks the Internet soon turned the tables when Wreck-It Ralph fans were quick to jump at Elena of Avalor's claim of having the first Jewish Disney Princess, an honor that technically belonged to Vanellope first.
unsure, i dont think vanellope is jewish (just her actress)
  • "Norberg Peace Prize" aired the same day the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali for resolving border conflict with Eritea.
they probably did that on purpose
  • In Season 3, Elena basically gets the same powerset as Tiaa from Forbiden Fruit: The Tempation of Edward Cullen.
    Fan Myopia
  • Christian Lanz and Grey Griffin previously played husband and wife in a failing marriage in Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, which makes Esteban and Ash's connection via Victor and later their Enemy Mine alliance this.
    actor stuff
  • In She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Adora carries on the mantle of She-Ra from Mara, who is voiced by Zehra Fazal. At the time, her most well-known animated role was Halo from Young Justice, who has color-coded aura powers. Come Season 3 of Elena of Avalor, where Elena also gains color-coded magic powers.
    actor stuff and Fan Myopia
  • In 2018, someone asked James Monroe Iglehart if he currently played a character on Elena of Avalor. He answered no. Come late 2019 and he's announced to be in Season 3. Funnily, the way he worded his answer ("I'm only on Tangled for now.") may have been some sort of (unintentional) foreshadowing.
shoehorn, this is just “writer wasnt on the show when he said that, but later was hired” f
  • Sarah-Nicole Robles was the singing voice for Marisa, one of the few pointy-eared non-human Sirenas in a cast of mostly humans. Now, she's voicing Luz on The Owl House, where she's the token human in a cast of mostly pointy-eared witches.
    actor stuff
  • To Encanto, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and his other works:
    • Here, Stephanie Beatriz plays one of the show's last guest stars, Ixlan, a Maruvian warrior princess who wields magical gloves that emit lightning. In Encanto, Beatriz plays the main character, Maribel, who in early production was being considered as Disney's official Latina Disney Princess.
    actor stuff
    • Encanto also features Diane Guerrero as Mirabel's sister Isabela, who played the villainous sister Vestia in the show.
    actor stuff
    • Lin-Manuel Miranda being in the talks for a Disney animated movie about a Latin American princess (which later became Encanto) became this with how often Elena seems to be associated with Moana among the Disney Princess merchandise fandom.
feels like a shoehorn since encanto and elena are different series

    • Likewise, Auli'i Cravalho eventually guest-starred in the show as sailor Veronica, putting Naomi against Elena, which is also funny for the same reason above.
    actor stuff
    • Elena of Avalor featured guest stars from Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton and In the Heights, including Javier Muñoz, Olga Merediz, Anthony Ramos, and James Monroe Iglehart. Additionally, the show has at least two songs that were inspired by Hamilton.
    actor stuff
    • Elena has a tough grandmother named Luisa and a younger sister named Isabel, while Maribel has a tough big sister named Luisa and an older sister named Isabela.
feels like a shoehorn, the character have enough differences between each other
    • After gaining more magical powers from Takaína, Elena becomes associated with yellow butterflies and rainbows. In Encanto, the seemingly magicless Maribel is associated with both from the start. In fact, both are references to works by famed Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez, who used yellow butterflies as symbolism for hope and love.
entry directly mentioned they are both based on the same thing, they are intentional references
    • The show ends with Elena's signature dress becoming white and wearing a coronation dress colored blue, and Encanto has Maribel wearing white and blue clothes. One could see it as Passing the Torch.
shoehorn, the dresses look quite different
    • Some of the powers of the Madrigal family include Green Thumb and Weather Manipulation, which were also some of Elena's powers after she fell into Takaína.
these powers seem too common to call hindsight, fan myopia

I have two questions regarding the Vic Mignogna restriction.

1. Why does this restriction apply to Vic, and Vic alone? We don’t have this same restriction for, as an example, Kevin Spacey, someone accused of similar crimes and who has never faced trial.

2. Does the “before he is found innocent or guilty” part of the restriction relate to his 2019 court case? If it does, then it’s worth noting that Vic was never on trial, he was suing Funimation and several voice actors for defamation of character over the allegations, and he lost both the trial and his appeal, before being prohibited from appealing again.

When it's just allegations, it can get dicey, but once we get to court, there's no reason to pretend it isn't a real controversy (to put it lightly) that affects how you watch his work.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

YMMV.Quest For Camelot has this entry:

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Near the end of the "If I Didn't Have You" number, Devon and Cornwall briefly impersonate Sonny & Cher, Cornwall even sneaking in a quick few bars of "I've Got You Babe". A fairly harmless, if out-of-place, gag within a Disney Acid Sequence musical number full out Shout Outs but given Bono died in a skiing accident mere months before Quest for Camelot's theatrical release, it's in a bit of bad taste.
I personally think this entry is OK, but feel like wording it as "bad taste" is a bit complainy as it's hardly the creators' fault, so maybe replace it with "an uncomfortable coincidence"?

Yeah, i think it should be cut. Maybe if he was actually linked to the production, or if there was anything related during the movie (why is the fact that he died in a skiing accident relevant?). But as it is, this is just "This movie made a reference to a super famous dead celebrity." With the only difference is that it died recently.
