The Main Runners

    Sawyer Tomura

Sawyer Tomura

Codename: Gravity Master

Voiced by: Showtaro Morikubo
The Protagonist of the story. A bold young man from the Grey Area who honed his parkour skills for his courier job. When his younger brother is diagnosed with an asthma-like disease, he forcefully enters Run For Money in an attempt to secure the funds needed for them to move to a place with cleaner air.

His Warcry is Church Grim, which grants him werewolf like limb projections, enhancing his speed and strength and allowing him to jump further.

  • Big Brother Instinct: His main motivation is protecting his younger brother's well-being. He also quickly gets protective towards some of the children he encounters in the Run For Money.
  • Character Catchphrase: "I'm getting intense!"
  • Establishing Character Moment: Sawyer's first scene in the anime is him performing a dangerous parkour stunt just to reach the balcony of the costumer so he can deliver a package to them, all while speaking politely while handing it over. This establishes his personality as bold and risk-prone, but also kind and polite.
  • Hot-Blooded: Even when he is visibly nervous in particularly dangerous parts of the Run For Money, he often can't help it but be absolutely psyched for the challenge.
  • Le Parkour: One of the best acrobats among the contestants, with great agility and reflexes to booth.
  • Mundane Utility: Prior to entering Run For Money, Sawyer's only source of income was from his delivery work. However, as he was too poor to afford buying/renting a vehicle, he instead honed his parkour skills to increase his speed and mobility.
  • Nice Guy: Polite, affable, overall respectful towards elders and always compassionate towards children.
  • Vibrant Orange: An all-around Nice Guy with a preference for orange clothes.
  • Pinball Protagonist: None of Sawyer's actions disturb the societal status quo on the Moon in any way, nor is Sawyer in any way interested in fighting the Chronos Inc.

    Haru Tomura

Haru Tomura

Codename: Wise Seeker, Wonder Fox (as John Doe)

Voiced by: Yumiko Kobayashi
Sawyer's younger brother. Haru's illness kick starts the plot when Sawyer decides to enter Run For Money in order to enable the siblings to move to a less polluted area. Later on, Haru decides to join the game show himself...

His Warcry is Unicorn, which can give him insight on whatever problem he his.

  • Child Prodigy: Despite of his young age, he is rather skilled with computers and has a vast amount of knowledge about Earth's history.
  • Hollywood Hacking: Somehow hacks into Chronos Inc.'s system to contact Sawyer in the Shibuya arc and relay him an important clue for the mission at hand. Deconstructed later on when Harvest menages to locate him with little difficulty.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: He enters the third game under the alias John Doe wearing a fox mask with a voice concealer, yet wears the same clothes and it doesn't cover his hair.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Haru is a physically weak, but incredibly intelligent. Sawyer, who is nimble and almost Made of Iron, is instead street smart.
    Luna Nishinotoin

Luna Nishinotoin

Codename: Lucky Muse

Voiced by: Marina Inoue
An incredibly lucky girl from a wealthy family. She mostly joins the game show to prove her luck.

Her Warcry is Fairy, which gives her wings to allow her to fly.

  • Born Lucky: Has semi-regular moments of incredibly luck, but is not entirely reliant on it.
  • Nice Girl: No matter their status, Luna is polite and caring towards others.
  • Non-Idle Rich: Much to the frustration of her overprotective butler, Luna is not interested in just enjoying a leisure life in luxury.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Has pink hair is given the title of a muse.
  • Spoiled Sweet, Despite of her coddled up upbringing, Luna lacks any ill will towards the competitors from lower economic echelons.

    Morris Shoemaker

Morris Shoemaker

Codename: Mr. Perfect

Voiced by: Ryōtarō Okiayu
The charismatic, well-built and widely respected champion of Run For Money, who has successfully maintained a long wining streak in the show.
  • The Ace: Has the coveted combination of Lightning Bruiser + The Strategist + Mr. Fanservice, enabling him to not only repeatedly win the game show, but also maintain a well-respected public persona. He isn't declared to be Mr. Perfect for nothing.
  • Anonymous Benefactor: Despite winning the Shibuya storyline, Morris goes out of his way to anonymously deliver a portion of the reward money to the Tomura siblings, enabling Haru's recovery.
  • Big Good: Usually ends up as the informal leader of the Runners during missions.
  • Hunk: Has a pleasantly rugged face and a muscular physique which is only further emphasized by the outfit he wears in Run For Money.
  • Nice Guy: Never fails to be pleasant to other people while interacting with them. He also went out of his way to personally and directly help Sawyer and Haru to move to a less polluted area.
  • Smug Super: Subverted Trope. He is confident and hardly downplays his achievements. However, he never looks down on other competitors and is quick to complement his competition whenever they pull off some difficult escape or mission.
  • Spirited Competitor: In spite of his excellent track record, Morris has no issue in praising other players.

    Sigma Redwing/Phantom Thief Appolon

Sigma Redwing

Codename: Masked Duke

Voiced by: Kazuya Nakai
An enigmatic masked man known in the public as Phantom Thief Apollon, who steals precious items from the wealthy and secretly donates them to the poor. After he and Sawyer meet for the first time, they quickly develop a rivalry over their parkour skills. It is heavily implied that Sigma has a personal grudge against Chronos Inc.

His Warcry is Wraith, which gives him stretchy arms that allow him to attack from a distance or to use them like grappling hook to reach places.

  • The Ace: A dashing master acrobat, proficient with various weapons and a master thief.
  • Actor Allusion: Sigma/Appolon is not only an allusion to his voice actor's role as Zoro being a charismatic hunk with great physical abilities and swordsmanship skills, but also goes the extra mile of even mimicking Zoro's original inspiration Zorro by being a Lovable Rogue hiding his identity behind a masked alter ego. His title of 'Masked Duke' also references the original Zorro's status of a nobleman. Furthermore, his actions scenes are often accompanied by a distinctly Hispanic-coded leitmotif.
  • Character Catchphrase: Doubles with Badass Boast. "I won't even let you step on my shadow."
  • Combat Parkour: Aside of his acrobatics, Sigma is also well-versed in several weapons, especially swords, frequently combining both.
  • Dashing Hispanic: Has shades of this, thanks to the Zorro allusions, including his leitmotif which has elements of Hispanic music.
  • Just Like Robin Hood: As Phantom Thief Appolon, Sigma steals from the wealthy in the White Area and anonymously donates to the needy in the Gray Area.
  • Mr. Fanservice: A deceptively pretty-faced, muscular masked avenger, whose outfit regularly displays his sculpted chest. He also forms a fiery, yet respectable rivalry with The Protagonist.
  • Pretty Boy: Behind his mask is a very pretty face with delicate features.
  • The Reliable One: Although he has lone wolf tendencies, once Sigma actually teams up with somebody, he is guaranteed to produced positive results.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: In the 19th century London arc, one of the villains captures and unmasks him only to be smitten by Sigma's beautiful purple eyes.
    Rabi

Rabi

Codename: Rebellious Gamemaster

Voiced by: Shino Shimoji
A mysterious runaway Runner with a secret connecting her to her former home in another lunar colony known as "Colony A-3". In reality, Rabi is actually the Game Master of Colony A-3's RFM until a coup d'etat led by Makoto Rozuki robbed her of her status and is kept imprisoned before she barely managed to escape to Colony A-7, where she goes incognito as a costumed Runner known as Raccoon Dog Man until Makoto and his terrorist group known as Kairos initiate their devious plans on Colony A-7 in pursuit of something called "Enigma"...
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: She is her colony's Game Master, and even though she's starting her participation in Kairos' RFM, she has enough tenacity to take on the challenge in hopes of taking back control of her colony from Makoto.

Other Runners

Introduced in the Shibuya, 2023 storyline

    Penta Baccana

Penta Baccana

Codename: King of Debt

Voiced by: Daisuke Kishio
A perpetually unlucky, debt-ridden young man.

His Warcry is Slime, which allows him to change parts of his body into slime, allowing him to avoid attacks or slip though bindings.

  • Animal Motifs: The second ending theme gives him an association with mice/rats.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He's a Butt-Monkey and a coward, but when properly motivated, he's actually very clever and powerful, and Slime is a very versatile Warcry allowing him to escape danger and hide. And naturally, when he hears he gets a ton of money for eliminating other runners during one mission in the Egypt Arc, he manages to eliminate four of them before getting eliminated himself.
  • Born Unlucky: Penta would probably get Donald Duck's sympathy over this. He is prone to Amusing Injuries, has had several Yank the Dog's Chain moments and his few triumphs are more likely to be rendered useless before he can profit off of them than not.
  • Cosmic Plaything: It seems that the universe is bent on ensuring that Penta stays stuck in Perpetual Poverty.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: Was the only one to see through Mika Lelouch's facade.
  • Lovable Coward: Has shades of this. He will avoid confrontation if he can get away with it, and try to run for the abandon box whenever possible, but he somehow manages to toe the line where he comes off as likeable.
  • Pungeon Master: On reflex, tends to crack jokes and puns relevant to the predicament at hand.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Subverted. Despite of his purple hair, the narrative makes no attempt at depicting Penta as a heavyweight in the Run For Money.

  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite of their appearance, Racoon Dog Man is one of the most consistent runners in the show, and can improvise remarkably well when he or the other contestants need to avoid the Hunters.
  • Nice Guy: Never tries to manipulate the other runners and has repeatedly risked getting caught by the Hunters on a few occasions just to save the other runners.
  • The Reliable One: Just about one of the most efficient and reliable players in the show.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Much to everyone's shock in and out of universe.
  • The Voiceless: Doesn't speak, but is so expressive in every other way that he easily communicates his thoughts and emotions to the viewer.

    Mika Lelouch UNMARKED SPOILERS

Codename:

Voiced by: Yui Horie
A kind and helpful nurse who often gets paired up with Touma and Sigma. In truth, she's an imposter Serial Killer who killed the real Mika and took her place, showing her true colors near the end of the mission and tried to kill everyone.
  • Ax-Crazy: The most violent and unhinged runner to appear in the show so far.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: The tertiary antagonist of the London Arc.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Maintains a facade of kindness and sanity for most of the London Arc until she is exposed, leading to her dropping the act and showing the full extent of her malevolence.
  • Evil Is Easy: Her Warcry can be used for prolonged battles without causing her fatigue, and is powerful enough to repel the Hunters - a far cry from every other contestant. Of course, she an insane evildoer.
  • The Fake Cutie: She may look and act cute, but deep down inside she’s an insane psychopath.
  • Foreshadowing: There are several hints to her real nature before The Reveal:
    • In the 2nd ending theme, she is the only character whose back is fully turned to the viewer.
    • Throught the London Arc, every Warcry at least aesthetically reflects their user. If she really were the kindly nurse she pretended to be, her Warcry would be healing themed, or at least look pretty/cute. Instead, once she reveals her true colors her Warcry is nothing short of deranged and generally unsettling.
    • She does very little on-screen through the arc, despite being teamed-up with the likes of Sawyer and Sigma. The Reveal shows that many of the weird incidents that occured in the arc were done by her off-screen.
    • She meets up with Sawyer and Sigma at the train station shortly after Jotaro Sengoku was attacked and placed in a vagon.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Once she shows her true colors, she's the first runner in the anime who becomes a mission to eliminate due to the danger of her murdering the other runners, and is the first runner who can actually deal with Hunters, and she comes off an already harrowing mission against Medusa, and is a whole lot more dangerous overall.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: Her desire to wipe out the Runners indirectly benefits Ridley, but she is not allied with him.
  • Traitor Shot: Deconstructed. The first time Penta caught on to her real nature was when he caught a glimpse of her Psychotic Smirk.
  • Walking Spoiler: Her role in the London Arc and her broken Warcry are too much of a spoiler, yet it is next impossible to talk about her without bringing it up.

    Rango Mather

    Tarot Genmu

Codename:

Voiced by:
    Abram Gordo

Codename:

Voiced by: Hideo Ishikawa
    Nagi Nishinotoin

Codename:

Voiced by: Yukana
Luna's older sister. Unlike her younger sibling, Nagi has inexplicably bad luck that follows her everywhere she goes and it often affects other people. Her Warcry is Nemesis, a far too powerful goddess who can wreck entire islands.
  • Abel And Cain: Averted. While Luna didn't like the idea of Nagi joining the game, it was only out of concerns about her horrible bad luck making the already dangerous game even more chaotic.
  • Doom Magnet: Her bad luck causes some very unlikely bouts of misfortune everywhere she goes.
  • Power Incontinence: Nemesis is one of the most powerful Warcry yet seen...and Nagi has no way of controlling it's power causing it to break the entire Dueling islands and eventually cause them to sink.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Nagi has implausibly bad luck, while Luna is Born Lucky.
    Linsen

Chronos Incorporated

    Satoshi Tsukimura
Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa
A member of Chronos Inc. and the Game Master of Run For Money.

    Harvest
Voiced by: Yu Shimamura
An enigmatic woman and the secondary Game Master of Run For Money, mostly charged with scouting new participants for Run For Money.
  • Enigmatic Minion: Her past and her exact dynamic with Satoshi is unknown. It doesn't help that she is seldom publicly acknowledged to even exist by Chronos Inc.
  • Expy: She looks suspiciously similar to Arukenimon's human disguise.
  • Hot Witch: Her clothes look like a classic witch outfit, but she is quite pretty.

    The Hunters
The Series Mascot. A group of imposing, sharp-dressed humanoid robots who act as the basic threat for the runners in each game.
  • Anti-Villain: Their only goal is to capture runners. They will go out of their way to prioritize runners who are in life threatening situations and save them in order to prevent unneeded deaths in the game.
  • Bridal Carry: While the Hunters prefer to just poke or touch the contestants, on rare occassions they will resort to this.
  • Character in the Logo: Unusually for this trope, the silhouette of one of them is on the logo, rather than that of The Protagonist.
  • Character Tics: When they are first released into the game, as well as after ending the chase against one of the players (successful or not), they tend to fix their ties.
  • Cool Shades: Which conveniently obstruct their eyes.
  • Hunk: They all look like dashing, barrel-chested, no-nonsense professional men, with none of them having a Gonk face.
  • Mecha-Mooks: Played With. They're uncanny humanoid machines equipped with relative Super-Speed and Super-Strength, but unlike the more traditional take on the trope are NOT Cannon Fodder.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: The moment they see a player, they lock on them and relentlessly pursue them. Afterwards, however, they do have a tendency to fix their outfit.
  • Silent Antagonist: They never speak. Then again, Nothing Is Scarier...
  • Supernatural Sensitivity: Anytime a player activates a Warcry it will alert any nearby Hunters in order to give more risk to activating them.
  • Touch of Death: Downplayed. The Hunters can kick out any Runner out of the game just by touching them, after which they are caught in a sphere and launched out of the playing field, but the players are still physically alive. In fact, some Runners are saved from actual death mid-mission via being ejected by a Hunter at the last second.
  • Villainous Rescue: While all players dread getting caught by the Hunters, sometimes getting caught by them is a good thing: at least one participant's life is spared by getting caught by one of the Hunters. This gets taken to its Logical Extreme in the 19th century London Arc, where the Serial Killer who infiltrated to game fails to kill any of the other Runners because the Hunters reached the cornered Runners first in an Offscreen Moment of Awesome.

     The Narrator
Voiced by: Mark Ohkita

The bombastic, unseen commentator of the Show Within a Show.

    Professor Tanba
Voiced by: Katsuhisa Houki
Professor Tanba is the lead researcher in charge of developing the means by which humans can finally defeat Shibra and the key character of the Shibuya Arc.
  • Mad Scientist: Averted. While under a lot of stress and being partially driven by revenge, he firmly maintains his sanity and is respected as the only scientist capable of developing something that can actually harm Shibra.
  • Parental Substitute: With her parents dead, Suzu' only remaining parental figure is her grandpa.

Allies introduced in the Owari no Kuni storyline

    Gorota Owari
Voiced by: Shun Horie
The heir to the land of Owari.
  • Abel And Cain: Gorota is the Abel to his older brother Naruichika's Cain. Naruichika was so bitter about it that he willingly joined forces with Nobunaga and caused the late lord of Owari's death.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: At the end of the arc, he becomes the new lord of Owari.
  • Unexpected Successor: Decontructed. His older brother joins forces with Nobunaga purely out of spite after Gorota unexpectedly ends up chosen by their father as the heir.

Allies introduced in the 19th Century, London storyline

     Max Major
Voiced by: Daisuke Hirakawa
A police inspector and a key character whom the runners encounter in the London stage.
  • Badass Normal: Lacks any superpowers, but is decently skilled with his gun and has the courage to face supernatural entities.
  • Fair Cop: An ikemen member of the London police who acts as the main ally for the runners in the London Arc.
  • Friend on the Force: Becomes this for the runners, letting them assist him in solving the monster incidents across London.
  • Occult Detective: Downplayed. For the duration of the London arc, he works on a series of monster-related cases, but he notably lacks any of the usual familiarity with the occult that this trope comes with.
  • Tragic Bromance: Jack The Ripper killed his close friend shortly before the London arc started.

Allies introduced in the Egypt storyline

Antagonists of Story Synapse arcs

    Shibra
A bizarre Animalistic Abomination with the power to constantly evolve. It is the first antagonist faced in the story, threatening to destroy Shibuya, and then the rest of Earth.

     Oda Nobunaga
Voiced by: Rikiya Koyama

An infamous warlord from a distant era. Nobunaga returns from the dead and invades to land of Owari, seeking to seize the power that Gorota has for his own means.

    Professor Ridley Zebit
Voiced by: Kazuhiko Inoue

The Hidden Villain of the London Arc. An insane researcher who uses his scientific acumen to create a series of genetic experiments based on monsters from classical Greek myths and some Victorian era novels.

  • Back from the Dead: Brought back via the collaboration between Zamza and Anubis.
  • Large and in Charge: Even in his base form he has a rather tall body.
  • Nefarious Pharaoh: Exaggerated. A former pharaoh who has returned from the dead and now seeks to consume every and any powerful souls he can get his hands on, including the souls of the Egyptian deities.

Others

    Peko
Voiced by: Hiroko Emori
An elderly woman who is most often seen receiving deliveries via Sawyer.
  • Cool Old Lady: A lively elderly lady who occasionally helps the Tomura siblings.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: She is old and barely half of Sawyer's height.
  • Mrs. Exposition: One of her main purposes in the story is to sporadically reveal more details about the anime's lore.
    Luna's butler
Voiced by: Ryouichi Tanaka
An elderly caretaker of Luna who is adamantly against Luna's desire to compete in Run For Money.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Given how dangerous Run For Money can get, his concerns about Luna competing are understandable.
  • Foil: To Peko. They are both (grand)parental figures to the main competitors in Run For Money, but whereas Peko supports the Tomura siblings, the butler is a borderline Fantasy-Forbidding Parent.
  • Parental Substitute: With Luna's parents being conspiciosly absent, the butler seems to be the closest thing she has to a parental figure.

    Gustin Logan
A mysterious man that Sawyer meets shortly before the London game. He joins the game himself later in the Egypt Arc.
  • Artificial Limbs: Aside of having a prosthetic leg, his regular occupation is that of a prosthetics engineer. On the wall of his workshop he has a bunch of photos of his costumers, including the likes of Magical Homie.
  • Handicapped Badass: Despite already being in his late forties and having a prosthetic leg, he performs pretty well in the Egypt arc.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: As the former champion of Run For Money, Morris' teacher and as one of the people who participated in the development of the Cry Trigger and the Warcry system in the first place.
  • Living Legend: 20 years ago, he was the then-champion of Run For Money. That he came from the Gray Area only made it more notable.
  • Walking Spoiler: Anytime he appears, expect The Reveal and/or a Plot Twist.
