The Medical Association

    The Chemist/"Logan"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/male_and_female_logan.png
The default male and female appearances

The protagonist of the game, who is assigned to Moonbury Town by the Medical Association to cure Mayor Myer's daughter Rue at his request because Matheo's medicine didn't work on her. They get a chilly reception from the other residents at first, but they slowly gain their trust by working as the town doctor.

  • Alchemy Is Magic: They make potions out of magical ingredients gathered from Moonbury Island to cure their patients.
  • All-Loving Hero: It's their mission as a doctor to tend to everyone's well-being, even if some are reluctant to trust them. Victor even wonders if they're being kind because they're a Chemist or if that's what they really are.
  • Canon Name: While they can go by any name, their default name is Logan.
  • Character Customization: You can choose between the male or female version of the Chemist at the start of the game, and also customize their skin color, hair color, hairstyle, eye color, and clothing color. You can change their appearance any time at Silky Stitch Tailor's, which provides more color options for their hair, eyes, and clothes.
  • Determined Doctor: They'll travel to the farthest reaches of Moonbury Island just to gather ingredients for their curative potions, and will stop at nothing in researching the cure for new diseases.
  • Heroic Mime: They don't have dialogue and only emote during conversations.
  • Loved by All: Dr. Nestor hopes the Chemist can gain the trust of the residents by curing them and helping them with their problems. Over the course of the game, the pricklier residents like Derrek and Garret slowly warm up to the Chemist, and when the latter restores Moonbury's natural areas and clears up the misunderstanding between the town and the Medical Association, everyone lauds them for their accomplishments and officially considers them as a Moonbury resident.
  • Made of Iron: Besides being able to have their max HP upgraded at Hearts and Sparks, they don't get visibly injured by the monsters they fight to collect ingredients from them. Running out of stamina simply means they move slower and can't use their tools, while being KO'd just has the forest rangers returning them to their house and the Chemist oversleeping until 12PM. Additionally, they can still function with only 4 hours and 10 minutes of sleep since the latest they can go to bed is at 1:50AM and they wake up at 6AM every day.
  • The Rival: Matheo sees them as one because he's jealous that they can cure diseases that he can't, like Rue's long-term illness. He also sees them as a threat to his family's tradition of using all-natural cures and fears that he'll go out of business because of them.
  • Unnecessary Combat Roll: They can dodge-roll out of the way of monster attacks while fighting them to collect potion ingredients from them. It makes them temporarily invincible, but there's a short cooldown period before they can dodge-roll again.

    The Chemist's Dog/"Noxe"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/noxe.png

The Chemist's Old English sheepdog, who accompanies them to Moonbury. He can sniff out ingredients and track down residents for them.

  • Canine Companion: The Chemist brings him along to Moonbury, and he can help sniff out ingredients and residents once they build a bond with him.
  • Canine Confusion: He likes garlic, even if it's toxic to him in real lifenote .
  • Canon Name: While he can be named anything, his default name is Noxe.
  • Item Caddy: He can sniff out items buried in mounds if you bond with him well enough.

    Dr. Nestor
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dr_nestor.png

The head of the Medical Association. He assigns the Chemist to Moonbury not just to cure Rue, but also to try rekindling the town's trust in the Association after several environmental accidents on the island many years ago.

  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: As Head of the Medical Association, he's always seen wearing his lab coat over his clothes, unlike his employees, who dress casually.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He assigns the Chemist to Moonbury at the mayor's request to heal his daughter because Matheo's medicine couldn't. Nestor also trusts the Chemist to regain the town's faith in modern medicine after several environmental accidents on the island caused a rift between them and the Medical Association.

    Collin and Moira
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/collin_and_moira.png

Dr. Nestor's two assistants, who check on the Chemist's progress in rebuilding Moonbury's trust in the Medical Association. They give the Chemist exams to promote their badge so they can access more areas on the island.

  • Ambiguously Related: They look like Half-Identical Twins since they have the same white hair, wear the same outfits, and playfully banter with each other, but it's not confirmed if they're blood-related or not.
  • Can't Live with Them, Can't Live Without Them: The serious Moira can't stand the cheerful Collin's jokes, but her life would be boring without him around.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Collin's eyes are always closed in a way that conveys his cheerfulness without his mouth being visible in his sprite, contrasting Moira's open, stern-looking eyes.
  • The Nicknamer: Collin never refers to anyone by their real names and calls them other names just for fun, like "Corn Boy" for Ottmar and "Grizzly Guy" for Yorn.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Gender-inverted. Collin is a cheerful man who likes joking around, to Moira's exasperation since she takes her job as assistant at the Medical Association seriously.
  • Workaholic: Moira takes her job as assistant at the Medical Association so seriously, she works tirelessly for weeks and is determined to finish whatever projects she's started. As a result, Collin decides to tour Moonbury to encourage her to take a break with him, which Dr. Nestor agrees with.

  • Hidden Depths: He's a diligent, hardworking farmer with a deep, secret passion for books. He wishes to visit the Capital's library someday and is amazed when you let him have your copy of The Principle of Life. He also likes playing chess in his head. • Jabba Table Manners: According to Mercy, he eats like a "ravenous beast" at the dinner table.

However, his medicine fails to treat Rue's long-term illness, so Mayor Myer resorts to calling the Chemist over to cure her. Matheo gets jealous and distrustful of them because he cannot trust the Medical Association after they caused several environmental accidents on the island in the past.

  • The Aloner: He lives in a house farthest south of the outskirts of Moonbury Town and never visits the town itself except for certain events because of his dislike for you for being a Chemist. You have to actively seek him out if you want to bond with him.
  • Break the Haughty: Beneath his serious demeanor and pride for his work, Matheo is so clumsy that he drops his notes when being chased by a bear. Instead of thanking you for returning his notes to him the first time, he gets mad that they weren't intact. He finally swallows his pride when his medicine fails to cure a new plant disease spreading across Moonbury, so he reluctantly asks you for help in finding the cure.
  • I Work Alone: He refuses to let the Chemist help him find the cure for a new disease that's spreading around Moonbury because he distrusts them and is determined to discover an all-natural cure for it, in order to maintain his family's tradition of using natural remedies. He reluctantly turns to them when his medicine isn't working on the disease.
  • The Klutz: He always drops his notes whenever he gets chased by a bear, prompting the Chemist to pick them up for him.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: According to Myer, Matheo is a stubborn and proud Witch Doctor who sees you as his rival for curing people faster with your potions. He's also normally punctual, but in his third Friendship Event, he turns up late for his own meeting with you and the mayor because he had been compiling his notes about the new disease infecting the plants of Moonbury, which is too strong for his natural medicine to cure. So, he reluctantly turns to you to find the cure for it.
  • Witch Doctor: He is descended from a line of them and is determined to protect their sacred medical traditions of using only natural remedies. He doesn't trust the Chemist when they arrive at Moonbury Town and gets jealous when they successfully cure Rue with their potions.

  • Cannot Spit It Out: Despite being a self-proclaimed extrovert, he struggles with conveying what he actually wants to say. He also tends to downplay any problems he's having so as not to worry others, prompting them to point out what exactly it is.
  • Nice Guy: He's a kind young man who chats casually with the Chemist and does his best to fulfill his customers' orders.
  • True Craftsman: He's the only carpenter in Moonbury, but he's incredibly skilled in his craft. You can visit his workshop to buy furniture for your house and upgrades to your work area.
  • Workaholic: He's so dedicated to his carpentry that he pushes his strength to its limits just to perfect his woodwork. He ends up injuring himself in his Friendship Events and asks you to brew healing potions for him.

    Victor
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/victor_3.png

  • Forgets to Eat: In his third Friendship Event, he only realizes after talking to the Chemist that he forgot to eat his lunch and excuses to them that he'll take it now. According to Socellia, he often forgets his meals due to his dedication to his job as gravekeeper.
  • Hidden Depths: He may be creepy and mysterious, but he's a kindhearted man deep down. He's genuinely touched when the Chemist gives him a Grilled Tenderloin in his third Friendship Event. He also reveals that his communication with spirits isn't an act, but rather him just "being himself".

  • Friendly Pirate: She's a retired pirate who settled into Moonbury to run Primerose Sail, where you can buy fishing bait.
  • Pirate Girl: She claims to be a former pirate, and her hook hand is proof of that. She used to go on dangerous seafaring adventures with Ottmar, but they're now living a peaceful life running their fishing shop and café, respectively.

    Martha

  • Lethal Chef: She likes baking cookies, but her first few batches taste awful. She's been trying to improve her recipe since.
  • Nice Girl: She's the sweet, gentle waitress of Lazy Bowl Tavern who shows kindness to her customers and bakes her signature cookies for them.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In her third Friendship Event, she gets uncharacteristically mad at you and storms out of the tavern. It's because she believes that you're leaving Moonbury the following day and didn't bother to try her latest batch of cookies. It then turns out that she fell for Russo's prank, and she profusely apologizes for the misunderstanding.
  • Workaholic: Although she's kind towards her customers, she often neglects her health. Yorn urges her to get some rest when she gets a headache in her second Friendship Event.

  • Promoted to Love Interest: Became a romanceable character in the v1.4 update, adding another Friendship Event for her.
  • Redhead In Green: She's a redheaded blacksmith whose favorite color is green, so her mother asks the Chemist to make Runeheart a green smithing apron as her apology gift for lashing out at her.
  • Tomboy: She works proudly as a blacksmith, a traditionally masculine job, hates feminine clothes, and gets easily fired up when ticked off.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: She ties her hair in a ponytail to keep it out of the way of her smithing, which she's proud of.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: She's at odds with her mother because the latter's stern with her training to make her the successor to her smithing business. Runeheart's stubbornness isn't helping Opalheart either, and it culminates with them yelling at each other when Runeheart doesn't listen to Opalheart and ends up breaking the tool the former's forging. That's why Runeheart asks the Chemist for help in gathering materials to fix it and prove her worth to Opalheart. While Opalheart is proud that her daughter is reaching up to her standards, Runeheart confesses that she still didn't feel happy because she feels that she's being molded into her mother's image instead of developing her own style. Thankfully, the Chemist points out to her that she's good at mixing alloys, and this inspires her to specialize in them so she can forge her own identity.

Others

Willow Waters Bathhouse

    Olive
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/olive_2.png

  • Gilded Cage: She wishes to go out of Moonbury to explore the outside world because she finds her town boring, but she can't leave her job as the sole owner of the bathhouse. She eventually realizes how much the other residents rely on the bathhouse and are grateful for it, and she learns to be more thankful for the community for it and decides to stay after all.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: She normally eats whatever Cassandra cooks without comment, so when she asks her to make her sausage rolls, Cassandra find it suspicious. Olive then lies that it's either "her time of the month" or she's got a bad headache and can't cook the sausages herself, when she actually wants them to prepare Osman's surprise anniversary date for Cassandra.

    Cassandra
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cassandra_5.png

Olive's close friend and sole worker at the Bathhouse. Her husband Osman works at the Police Department down south, and she often gets anxious without him by her side.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Her husband calls her "Cas".
  • Dude Magnet: She was quite charming to the men in her youth, and even Yorn was smitten by her.
  • Happily Married: Despite her and Osman's struggles with working at different jobs, they're grateful to see each other after work.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Her long black hair adds to her feminine beauty. It's no wonder many men were attracted to her back in the day.
  • Nervous Wreck: She's afraid of telling Osman about her anxiety issues because she thinks that might distract him from his job, when that's what's been causing them in the first place. When the Chemist's potion for her anxiety wears off, they advice her to open up to Osman about it so he can help her calm down.
  • Supreme Chef: According to Osman, she used to deliver her cooking to her father before working at the bathhouse. Her meals became so popular with the other residents, she started cooking regularly for them.

  • Disappeared Dad: His father Oswald died before the events of the game, and Osman keeps one of his documents in his office since he plans to share his legacy in trying to clear Dr. Lewis's name regarding the accident at Glaze Iceberg to prove to Moonbury that the Medical Association can be trusted.
  • Happily Married: Despite his and Cassandra's struggles with working at different jobs, they're grateful to see each other after work.
  • Married to the Job: He's dedicated to his job, but beneath his Tough Leader Façade, he carries a heavy burden to the community and his family, especially Cassandra. He also used to drink to try escaping his problems, while Cassandra doesn't let him know how difficult working without him is because she thinks that might distract him from his duties. This is because Cassandra has anxiety issues and is afraid of telling Osman about it, but with the Chemist's help, Osman promises to spend more time with her to ease off her worries.
  • Workaholic: He's such a hardworking officer that he never takes a break from police duty. This ends up stressing him so much that he blows up in front of Dean and Derrek, prompting Cassandra to ask you to request the mayor to give Osman a day-off. Mayor Myer then realizes that he's been overworking Osman, so he reallocates some of his duties to Dean and Derrek so that Osman can have more time to relax.

    Dean
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dean_49.png

The older twin brother of Derrek and one of Osman's trusted employees. He likes eating snacks over doing police duty and is friendlier towards the Chemist than Derrek.

  • Professional Slacker: He's often seen sleeping on the bench when he's supposed to be working.
  • Successful Sibling Syndrome: He feels inferior to Derrek because Dean struggles to stay motivated to exercise and take his job responsibly like him. In Dean's second Friendship Event, he turns in his badge and runs away crying, but Derrek comforts him by assuring him that everyone makes mistakes, even Derrek himself, and he and the Chemist successfully convince him to return to the job.
  • Weight Woe: He has binge eating disorder and is struggling to lose weight for his job, so he asks the Chemist to make a weight loss potion for him. The Chemist also advises him to watch his diet and exercise regularly, and while there doesn't seem to be much progress, he slowly feels motivated to attain a healthy weight.

    Derrek
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/derrek.png

  • Fat and Skinny: He's skinny while Dean's fat.
  • Fitness Nut: He's obsessed with keeping himself fit for his job and is often seen lifting weights even while walking outside. This comes to a head when he ends up being late for work because he was so focused in trying to make 1,000 reps for the day, prompting the Chemist to gently remind him to manage his time and stop overexerting himself.
  • Jerk Jock: Contrasting his lazy but gentle brother, Derrek is often seen exercising for his job, but is distrustful of people from the Capital such as you, although he lets his guard down once he sees how capable you are in your field.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: Derrek is lean, competitive, and does exercise during his breaks, while Dean is fat, carefree, and prefers taking snacks over performing his duties

  • Definitely Just a Cold: While his family is fully aware of him being in a wheelchair after an accident, he refuses to accept that the injury is permanent and incurable. When the Chemist checks on him in his first Friendship Event, he tells them to tell his family that he's "fine", which they do despite knowing how grave his injury is. In reality, Garret had long accepted his injury and refuses to be "cured", but he only plays along to Mercy's attempts to treat him so as not to hurt her feelings.
  • Family Man: Being in a wheelchair doesn't stop him from tending to his ranch with Mercy and raising Lucke and Laura with her.
  • Happily Married: Despite the struggles he has with his disability, he certainly cares for Mercy as much as she cares for him.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Unlike his family's innocent light blue eyes, he has dark blue eyes that show how cold he is towards the Chemist.
  • Perpetual Frowner: The accident that forced him into a wheelchair a few years ago has left him always frowning.
  • Tragically Disabled Love Interest: Several years ago, he suffered an accident that permanently placed him in a wheelchair, and his wife is desperately doing everything she can to treat him. However, Garret had long accepted the fact that he'll never walk again, and after playing along to Mercy's wishes, he finally lashes out at her for trying to "cure" him. He's at least grateful that he's alive and that he still has his family, and Mercy learns to accept that his disability has become a part of him.

    Mercy
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mercy_32.png

The wife of Garret and mother of Lucke and Laura, who tends to the Farmhouse as a Housewife. She's always concerned about her children's wellbeing and trusts the Chemist to check on them.

  • Happily Married: Despite the struggles she has with coping with Garret's disability, Mercy certainly cares for him as much as he cares for her.
  • Housewife: While her husband tends to the farm, she stays indoors to cook meals for the family and raise the kids.
  • I Want Grandkids: She pesters Lucke to get married, to his frustration, and even asks you to make a weight gain potion for him because she believes he's too thin to get a date.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Her children take after her, inheriting her dark skin and hair and light blue eyes.
  • Tough Love: She seems to be a stern, no-nonsense housewife at first, but her strict discipline on her children comes from her genuine love for them.

    Laura
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/laura_4.png

Garret and Mercy's daughter and Lucke's younger sister. She's a sweet, innocent little girl who's best friends with Russo, the resident prankster kid.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nova_1.png

  • Tragic Keepsake: She keeps her late husband's plain brown wedding suit in her cabinet, which she repairs with the Chemist's help in her second Friendship Event.

    Hannah
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hannah_39.png

Nova's sole employee at the tailor shop, who struggles to work up to her high fashion standards. As a result, she suffers self-esteem issues and loses sleep at night.

  • Ambiguous Gender Identity: She has a masculine body, yet she wears makeup and has long hair. She also works as a fashion designer, a traditionally feminine job, and her pre-release description states that she's not comfortable enough in her body type to wear ladylike dresses. However, her gender identity is never remarked on by the other residents or the game's Lore Codex.
  • Chronic Self-Deprecation: She wishes to be a great fashion designer like her boss, but she feels that her own designs aren't good enough. When the Chemist tells Nova about her problem, she reveals that she had been taking Hannah's ideas and incorporating them in her next fashion design. With the Chemist's help, Nova makes the dress that Hannah had always wanted to design and shows it to her, making her more self-confident, and Nova starts selling the dresses while crediting Hannah.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: She's a fashion-focused woman with long platinum blonde hair with a blue streak on the fringe.

  • Disappeared Dad: His father, the previous mayor of Moonbury, is long dead by the start of the game.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Father: Rue wishes to visit the capital after being cured of her long-term illness, but Myer forbids it out of fear of losing his only daughter.
  • Following in Relative's Footsteps: He took after his father in running Moonbury Town, and the pocket watch the latter gave to him when Myer was a kid inspired him to strive to be a diligent leader like him.
  • Happily Married: He and Mariele certainly love each other as much as they love Moonbury.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: His portrait on the 1st floor (2nd floor in American English) of the town hall shows him as a dashing young man with brown hair and a short mustache.
  • Not So Above It All: He isn't above playing at the arcade late at night. He's also forgetful sometimes due to his age, like when he loses the pocket watch from his late father at either Willow Waters Bathhouse or Matheo's house and asks the Chemist to find it.
  • Quintessential British Gentleman: He has the appearance of a kindly British upperclassman. He has gray hair and a mustache, wears a top hat, monocle, and tuxedo, and walks around with a cane. He's a hardworking leader who ensures that Moonbury Town runs smoothly.

The vicar of the church who adopted Russo when he was a baby. She's a religious woman with a hidden passion for singing, and is highly skeptical of Victor's belief in ghosts.

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: She worships the gods of a Christianity-like religion and criticizes Victor's belief in spirits, yet she lives on an island where magical plants and animals are used for potion ingredients, which she slowly trusts the Chemist to use to cure her illnesses.
  • Hidden Depths: She has a hidden talent for singing, but isn't confident in her voice. She secretly practices on the cliff by Moonbury, but her sessions give rise to a scary urban legend.
  • Parental Substitute: She adopted Russo when he was a baby and is raising him like her own son at the Monastery.
  • Performance Anxiety: In her second Friendship Event, she runs out of the church after her failed recital. She asks the Chemist to check her throat, but while they don't find anything wrong with it, they still make a potion that they believe will improve her next performance. This time, her recital is well-received and she thanks the Chemist for it, but they tell her that it was just warm water (regardless of the ingredients you put in), and that she just needed to be more self-confident in her talent.

  • Bratty Half-Pint: He's a naughty little boy who likes pranking people and hates doing his homework. While he's a handful for Socellia, she still does her best to raise him.
  • Book Dumb: He hates homework, so he often sneaks out to play with Laura or at the arcade instead.
  • Doorstop Baby: He was dropped off at the church by his parents when he was a baby, and Socellia immediately took him in. Russo resents them for abandoning him in the first place, but is happy to have Socellia as his guardian.
  • Happily Adopted: He's happy living with his guardian at the Monastery.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Socellia enjoys seeing him and Laura get along like siblings, with Russo protecting her like a big brother.
  • Only Friend: He didn't have a lot of friends growing up, and Laura is his only playmate.
  • The Prankster: He's a mischievous little boy who likes pranking the other residents to get their attention. In his first Friendship Event, he pulls a Laxative Prank on the mayor by lying to you to make a purgative potion for Socellia's stomach problems.

Bubble used to have another white rabbit as a kid, which was a gift from her mother before she passed away. Conserving Cotton's species is what inspired Bubble to become a ranger.
