    The Main Characters

Joker / Jack Jones

Voiced by: Ayumu Murase
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaitou_joker.jpg
"Welcome to the shining night!"

  • Alliterative Name: Jack Jones.
  • Anime Hair: His long hair manages to stick up, even when he was young.
  • Bare Your Midriff: In his JJ outfit during the band competition.
  • Big Eater: Why Hachi enjoys cooking for him. He especially loves curry.
  • Blinded by the Light: His "Straight Flash" attack.
  • Calling Your Attacks: "Straight Flash", "Emblem Fire", and "Shooting Star"
  • Coat, Hat, Mask: Part of his Kaito outfit, to look like a magician.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Subverted. Unless it involves people close to him, he gets something out of it or disagrees or agrees for a completely different reason , Joker usually doesn't go out of his way to help someone (unless he is prompted by Hachi). He isn't the type to side with the bad guy as well. See Villain Protagonist and Black and Grey Morality.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Before their death, he was shown to be very close with them, especially with his father.
  • Disguised in Drag: Via Image Gum, Joker has impersonated Kaneko.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Joker is averse to dipping sauce due to a prank played on him in childhood.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: When trying to save Rose, Clovers tries to shoot him but Rose deflects that attack, causing it to grase around the eye.
  • Heroic Comedic Sociopath: Joker shows a few shades of this. For example, Joker gleefully laughs as he sets off bombs he planted in Lucky Pyramid's home to cause him misfortune. He carries a full teeth grin as Lucky Pyramid screams in the background.
  • Phantom Thief: As the show title suggests
  • Power Trio: With Spade and Queen, when they work together.
  • Invincible Hero: Averted. While Joker has all the trappings of an invincible hero, he doesn’t always get the treasure, and occasionally even finds himself outwitted by his Worthy Opponent for the week.
  • In Harm's Way: He states in the manga that getting in tight spots is the reason why he enjoys his job.
  • Master of Disguise: Joker's Image Gum allows him to take on the appearance of anything he's seen before, including people and inanimate objects.
  • Playing Card Motifs: Joker, occasionally the Hearts suit.
  • Skewed Priorities: Often he gets upset at villains for the wrong reason, like them knocking out the audience because now who could he put on the show for?
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Curry.
  • Trojan Prisoner: Twice.
    • He and Hachi turn themselves in, because the prisoner facility that they were being sent to contains a valuable.
    • After he and Hachi switch places, he gets caught by the Kuma clan. This allowed him to closer to the artifact as the cell was near roof, while Kouga, is distracted by Hachi.
  • Villain Protagonist: ZigZagged. Unlike other kaito central characters, he doesn't have a noble reason for stealing and works as a kaito full-time. Not to mention he isn't very honest or nice. To most civilians and the police, he's a criminal. However, compared to other enemies like the Clover Faction and Shadow, he isn't the villain. His methods aren't meant to harm/injure anyone, he will fight for those he cares about, and has done some genuinely good things, such as working with Spade to save people stuck in burning building and letting the people on the island in "The Island of the Evil Scarlet God" have their long-lost Scarlet Heart back. He also grow up with the mentality that stealing is okay, so long that it is a challenge and warned in advance. See Black and Gray Morality on the main page.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Joker and Spade have this relationship.
  • Weapon of Choice: His cards.
  • Would Not Shoot a Civilian: Joker says in "The Island of the Evil Scarlet God" that "a phantom thief has no need of killing tools."
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: With cats, to Hachi's amusement. It was because he had been chased by Doubt in a ventilation system when he was young.

Hachi

Voiced by: Yumiko Kobayashi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/k_hachi.jpg

Joker's assistant, a ninja from the Kuma clan. He become's Joker's apprentice but often acts as his housekeeper.

  • Battle Butler / Ninja Maid: For Joker.
  • Butt-Monkey
  • Distress Ball: Often targeted as he is Joker's assistant (but sometimes his clumsiness often leads him there). This even gets referenced in the 3rd chapter:
Hachi: It's not like I want to!
  • Highly Visible Ninja: He is almost always seen in his blue ninja outfit (though, he does wear casual clothes if he needs act as a civilian).
  • Identical Grandson: He looks exactly like his great ancestor, Ichi, right down to his eyes and height. Oddly, none of his siblings have this resemblance.
  • The Klutz: To the point when he had a reputation of his ninja village and got picked on. Gets deconstructed when he and Joker get into a fight on how his clumsiness ruins the mission. This later becomes a trick to when he returns to the village, the ninjas capture Joker-disguised Hachi. Due to his reputation, they let their guard down while they get distracted by Hachi disguised as Joker, giving Joker an opening to steal the treasure.
  • The Millstone: Especially earlier in the series, he hindered Joker more than he helped him. This has been lampshaded a number of times in both the anime and manga. Over time, Hachi has become more competent and Joker has put more faith in him.
  • Morality Pet: For Joker, especially when his antihero qualities kick in.
  • Neat Freak: Being Joker's housekeeper seems to be his other job.
  • Playing Card Motifs: 8 of Hearts (as seen in the eye-catches), with the "8" fitting his name.
  • Technicolor Ninjas: Like the rest of his family, he wears a bright blue outfit.
  • Verbal Tic: He tends to end his sentences with "ssu", a shortened version of "desu".

Silver Heart

some caption needed
Voiced by: Bin Shimada

  • Arch-Enemy: Of Professor Clover.
  • Cool Old Guy: He is a kaito after all.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: One visible eye has rings in different shades of blue, and the pupil is also blue
  • High-Class Glass: Wears a monocle. It's on the same eye Professor Clover shot at when they were both agents
  • Parental Substitute: To Joker, Spade, and Queen.
  • Phantom Thief:
  • Light Is Not Good/Light Is Good: As a kaito, he falls to the former (though he would never purposely harm anyone in that state, making himself also the second). His being a secret agent falls into the later trope.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: When he was younger.
  • Man in White: His kaito outfit. It seems to be a modified version of his secret agent suit
  • Old Master: Though he's often the comic relief, he still lives up to his kaito reputation as he is quite clever and capable (such as driving a plane while critically injuries to save his students). It might help that he was a secret agent in the past. He is responsible for training Joker, Spade and Queen.
  • Playing Card Motifs: Ace of Hearts (as seen in the eye-catches).
  • Retired Badass: Before becoming a kaito, he was a very successful secret agent under the same name.
  • Tyke Bomb: When his parents died when he was a baby, and he gets taken in by a spy agency. He has been trained as one since then.

Voiced by: Hiro Shimono
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/king_spade.png
"I didn't trick you. You jumped to the conclusion by yourself."

  • Adorably Precocious Child: Before he met Joker. Justified as he looks after his adoptive parents' child, who is spoiled and mistreats him. He takes care of him because he felt in debt towards them.
  • Awesome Mc Coolname: His real name literally "King" (which works well with his code name).
  • Bishōnen
  • Calling Your Attacks
  • Compressed Hair: Spade, in his disguises, manages to tuck in his hair such that it looks like a bob cut.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Spade has pupils that are half-black/half-white and shaped like a spade, while the visible part of his irises are purple
  • Gag Haircut: Not noticeably, but part of his hair "crown" got chopped out when he got turned to stone and fell.
  • Ill Boy: Gets fainting/fever spells. It doesn't happen very often, though.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy
  • Parental Abandonment: His parents leave for a yacht trip with a hourglass artifact, promising to come back. However, the wait becomes so long that Spade had to leave home because he ran out of food (and almost died in the snow). It was revealed the Clover had killed his parents during the trip to steal the treasure
  • Phantom Thief: Was raised as one with Joker and Queen.
  • Play-Along Prisoner: It seems that he had the key the whole time but waited till Joker freed himself just to mess with him
  • Playing Card Motifs: King of Spades.
  • The Prankster: In his childhood, Spade was this and this trickster nature has flowed into his style of theft
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: He knew Dark Eye was a female, and an idol at that but didn't say anything since she doesn't seem to share
  • Weapon of Choice: His ice gun.

Dark Eye / Ai

Spade's main assistant. She is also a member of the pop idol Shuffle Sisters.

Shadow Joker / Cyan

See Clover Faction.

    The Police

Dogusaburō Oniyama

Voiced by: Naoki Tatsuta
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dokusaburou_oniyama.jpg
"You're so under arrest!"

The head of the police department's anti-phantom thief department and the secondary antagonist of the series.

  • Adaptational Wimp: Downplayed but he is a bit more collected and think things through in the manga compared to the anime. However, his role being much smaller in the original might have something to do with it.
  • Ascended Extra: He plays a much more important role in the TV show than in the manga.
  • Butt-Monkey: He gets the lower rope of things.
  • Flower Motif: His card eye catch is a flower card.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Is very quick to get angry, especially with Joker around.
  • In-Series Nickname: Part of his name "Oniyama" gets shortened to "Oni".
  • Parents as People: Though his job seems to tie him up with work, he's shown to love his family deeply, especially his daughter. When his daughter gets kidnapped in the anime and was told to come alone, he loses it. He starts losing his cool and starts making rash decisions he wouldn't normally do. Joker was the only one who could calm him down
  • Sympathetic Inspector Antagonist: Oniyama, to Joker. He even catches on to Shadow Joker’s Criminal Doppelgänger nature very quickly when he sees him doing things that the real Joker would not.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: When he had to work with Joker after his daughter gets kidnapped.
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: Downnplayed. In comparison to his 2 assistants (though he is close to Momo's height), he fits this.

One of Oniyama's two assistants. Also wishes to catch Joker with Momo and Oniyama.

  • Ascended Extra: She appears much more frequently in the show than in the manga.
  • Meganekko
  • Calling Your Attacks
  • Custom Uniform: In the anime, she wears a purple variant of the police uniform

    The Clover Faction

Professor Clover

Voiced by: Kosugi Juurouta
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/proffesor_clover.jpg
some caption text

The main antagonist of the series. His ambitions are in the dark but he'll use any means to achieve his goal. He seems to hold a grudge against Silver Heart. He is responsible for the death of Queen's and Spade's parents, and possibly Joker's..

  • Arch-Enemy: Of Silver Heart
  • Artificial Limbs: His right arm.
  • Bad Boss: He sacrifices his own underlings after he got full power from a girl that he forcefully controlled and doesn't give a damn if his underlings are died.
  • Dark Is Evil: Made it obvious due to his evil jester clown like outfit.
  • Evil Teacher: He isn't an actual teacher (as far as we know anyways), but dons a variation of a headmaster's outfit and referred to as Professor Clover. He's also the main antagonists of the series.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Silver Heart, While Silver Heart does actually care about his "children" that he raise as Phantom Thieves, however, Professor Clover doesn't show any care of his underlings.
  • Expressive Mask: His mask mimics his facial expressions.
  • The Heavy: Despite the nature of the show seems a bit episodic, he is by far the most overaching villain of the show and the source of conflict and also the reason why Joker and Shadow Joker ended up to be the way they are
  • Killed Off for Real: Meets his end at the hands of Joker and Cyan when the two melt him with sulfuric acid in the Season 2 finale.
  • Knight of Cerebus: He is responsible for the darkest moments that happens in the series and every time he appears, the series went south quickly
  • Manipulative Bastard: Tries to trick and use Queen by saying that Silver Heart killing her own parents (In which he succeed) and control a girl with time-bending power with his staff to get what he wants.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Seems to be his favourite method at getting back Silver Heart
  • Sadist Teacher: His outfit seems to be a variation of a headmaster's clothes and referred to as Professor (though he isn't an actual teacher). He does derive pleasure in harming his enemies, including Silver Heart and his apprentices.
  • The Sociopath: He will do anything to get the treasures he wants, even if it means killing people and sacrificing his own allies and he shows no empathy towards his own underlings after he sacrifices them to kill Joker's friends.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: Despite the majority of the show are lighthearted and mostly a comedic show, thanks to his sociopathic and sadistic nature, he is easily the most dangerous opponent for Joker and his friends.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Willingly dispose the girl who has a time bending power by pouring an acid on her once he had no further use to him and use her as a blackmail object so that Joker and Shadow Joker won't take her from his clutches

Clover's main assistant. She has the ability to turn into a cat.

Shadow Joker / Cyan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shadow_joker.jpg
some caption text
Voiced by: Saito Soma

He holds a grudge of something Joker did in the past. He only works for the Clover until his sister Rose revives.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: His hair is black in the manga and cyan in the anime.
  • Badass Biker: His main form of transportation when he's by himself
  • Calling Your Attacks: "Bloody Rain"
  • Compressed Hair: It's actually fairly long.
  • Criminal Doppelgänger: He purposely dressed himself so he would be mistaken for Joker and have his crimes blamed on him. His outfit does slightly differ as it is a purple version of Joker's outfit, has a bluish tint in his hair, and goes under the name 'Shadow Joker' once his diguised has been figured out
  • Expy: As an angsty, aloof, motorcycle-riding counterpart with an innocent female character that he's shown to care about a lot (not to mention is name and motifs), he bare of resemble to a certain hedgehog in another franchise. There are some notable differences in personality and it doesn't take too long for him to branch away
  • Parasol of Pain: His Weapon of Choice.

Rose

An unconscious girl at the Clover's lair, someone Shadow is seen to be deeply caring about. She is a witch with the ability to manipulate time. She is also Shadow's twin.

    Others

Mr. Kaneari

A rich man whose treasures (his or not) get targeted by Joker.

The Shuffle Sisters

A popular idol group of 3 sisters (Kira, Rei, and Ai).

President D

Voiced by: Daisuke Kishio

The president of the mysterious organization Devil Fang. He placed bounties on Joker, Queen and Spade, and has hired many bounty hunters to take them out.

  • Big Eater: In most his appearance he is either surrounded by food or in the midst of eating. Despite this he is surprisingly thin.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: His long plum-colored tresses and conspicuous eyelashes, along with his frilly-cuffed purple jacket and lilac cravat give him a very feminine appearance. His voice, however, is quite deep.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: He has a considerably deep voice.
  • Purple Is Powerful: He wears an entirely purple ensemble, and he is the head of a (presumably criminal) organization.
  • Rapunzel Hair: It contributes to his feminine appearance.

Akai Tsubasa (Phoenix)

A mysterious individual with supernatural powers who usually appears in the form of a teenage boy. He was sealed in a tomb for over 3000 years before Devil Fang accidentally released him.

  • Catchphrase: "I want to go home."
  • Challenge Seeker: He seems to get a thrill out of competing with Joker for treasures, especially once he realizes that Joker is actually a worthy opponent.
  • Comically Serious: He isn't a comedic character, but his reactions to various things (e.g. mabo tofu, his first time seeing a television) are frequently funny.
  • Lack of Empathy: Akai doesn't understand other character's emotions and relationships, in particular being confused by Joker's friendship/rivalry with Queen and Spade. He has no concern for when other characters are in danger (eg. when Joker is injured and being chased by a hungry shark; when Joker and his friends are shrunken and imprisoned in a cage) and even taunts and laughs at them. Unlike Joker, he doesn't appear to value life. He left Hachi, Dark Eye and Roko to be impaled in a trap (which backfired on him after the trap was cleared), threatened to feed a crew of pirates to a giant squid, and cheerfully wrapped Joker in an anchor and threw him overboard, along with his former ally/pet Hoshi and Hachi. At the same time, he isn't evil, just confused, naive and has no social skills.
  • Logical Weakness: As someone with an affinity for the element of fire, he hates water and can't swim.
  • Meaningful Name: His full name is Japanese for "red wing".
  • No Social Skills: His interactions with pretty much any other character make this clear. This is taken Up to Eleven when he confronts two guards and gets taken prisoner without realizing he's a prisoner the whole time.
  • The Phoenix: He is one, in his true form.
  • Rule of Three: Whenever he's asked a question, he always replies by listing three possible answers.
  • Sleepyhead: Even when he's awake, he's constantly yawning.
  • Wingding Eyes: He has cross-shaped pupils.
  • Clip Its Wings: Dr.Neo hires Sniper Genma to shoot off his left wing in order to capture him
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: He's been sealed away in a tomb for 3000 years, so naturally he is very confused about the modern world.

Hoshi (Acrux)

Voiced by: Atsumi Tanezaki

The “God-Beast” that Joker obtains as his 1,000th treasure.

  • Cartoon Creature: No one is sure what Hoshi is, but he is certainly cat-like. Joker even calls him a “pseudo-cat”.
  • Extreme Omnivore: His favorite food is treasure. In fact, the first treasure he is seen eating is the Crystal Skull Key.
  • Meaningful Name: His real name, Acrux, refers to the Alpha Crucis, the brightest star in the Southern Cross. Likewise, his nickname, Hoshi, is Japanese for "Star".
  • Pokémon Speak: Communicates by saying “Hoshi”. Much like Hodor, his real name (according to Akai) is Acrux, but is called Hoshi because that's all he says.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Treasure, much to Joker's frustration.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Even more so than Roko.

DJ Peacock

Voiced by: Masahito Yabe

A hyperactive announcer at the Underworld News Network who frequently reports on the exploits of Phantom Thieves (usually Joker).

  • Ascended Extra: He has a recurring role in the anime as a newscaster who reports on Joker, or whatever news is relevant to the plot at the moment, whereas he has a much more minor role in the manga.
  • Large Ham: He frequently shouts and puts his face right up to the camera during his reports.
  • Pimp Duds: He wears a bright yellow jacket with no shirt underneath, green pants, magenta shoes, a white feather boa, large gold earrings, and large gold and purple sunglasses.

    Manga Only

Nightmare

A phantom thief of Italy. Uses his masks to posses people and do his bidding.

Panta

A young boy who somehow finds himself getting involved in Joker’s adventures from time to time, sometimes alone and sometimes accompanied by his friends.
  • Butt-Monkey: He always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, whether he’s getting held up at a carnival, trapped in a haunted schoolhouse or wanders onto Joker’s airship.
  • Tagalong Kid: By circumstance, he ends up as this to Joker, usually to Joker’s annoyance.
