  • Americans Hate Tingle: Danika is not very liked in Spanish speaking countries for dub related issues (the Latin Spanish dub is disliked by many Spanish speakers for using the controversial and seldomly used gender-neutral "lenguaje inclusivo", and Danika is the one who uses it the most).
  • Accidental Innuendo:
    • An In-Universe example: Jameson telling Peter in a flashback to show the world his manhood. Peter is understandably mortified to hear that.
    • After Peter and Harry (who already have several Ho Yay moments) discover Harry's new powers, they head over to their office to test them and wreck the place in the process. When Norman shows up the next morning, Harry's excuse is that their late-night "experimenting" is to blame for the mess.
    • When Kraven gets choked by Spider-Man's symbiote tendrils at the end of his boss fight, he actually mutters "harder" during the moment. While in context, it's meant to be him wanting Spider-Man to kill him, that didn't stop fans from understandably interpreting it in a far kinkier light.
    • While the "Spidey shooting white fluid from his body" joke has already existed for years, the way the anti-venom symbiote powers can leave mooks stuck on walls almost entirely covered in massive amounts of white, slimy goop may amuse some dirty-minded players. Making this even better is that encounters with symbiotes can leave civilians engulfed inside the stuff.
  • Accidental Aesop: It's better to vent your anger than leave it bottled up. While Peter and MJ are unnecessarily cruel during their respective boss fights, they're able to receive some catharsis from what happened and the angry things they say. In particular, Peter and MJ are able to repair their relationship after Scream rants about how much supporting Peter has taken a toll on her, and MJ's able to quit the toxic environment of the Daily Bugle and devote her energy towards her podcast to tell the stories of New York.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Did Otto refuse to disclose the identity of the Spider-Men to Norman due to his bitter hatred of Norman and him wanting Norman to experience loss? Or is it because despite everything that happened in the first game, he still cares enough for Peter to protect his identity? Or is it both? A third possibility is that his degrading mind has actually forgotten who Spider-Man is as suggested in the first game's files on his illness.
    • Just how malevolent was the symbiote from the start?
      • Harry at the start was implied to have been wearing it for years with no negative effects to his personality, and Peter for a good while still appeared to be his normal self while bonded with it. The symbiote only started noticeably negatively affecting Peter's personality when he had to deal with the stress of saving Connors and Kraven's Hunters escalating their conflict. It was only when making contact with a piece of the meteorite that the symbiote truly became toxically possessive over Peter, leading to the possibility that the meteorite was the reason the symbiote became villainous. But if that's the case, why is the symbiote implied to have spoken to Harry using Emily's voice whilst in the tank?
      • Also, did the symbiote want Peter simply because it deemed him as a stronger host with more powers to assimilate? Or did it somehow assimilate Harry's friendship towards Peter and decided it wanted to become his new Best Friend, if not his Only Friend?
      • Finally, Was the Assimilator Plot at the end Venom manipulating Harry as a means to an end or was it the symbiote's twisted attempt to cure Harry and the world from its warped, negative emotion influenced perspective?
    • Did Martin Li know Peter was Spider-Man before he entered his mind, or did he put two and two together while he and Miles were in there and just roll with it?
  • Award Snub: While the game was nominated for seven awards at The Game Awards 2023note , it didn't win a single one. Many fans chalked this up to it being released in a year full of high quality games, resulting in it facing some incredibly fierce competition. Spider-Man (PS4) from 2018 also suffered the same fate as well.
  • Awesome Music:
    • John Paesano is back on scoring duties as per usual, and once again he delivers. Standouts include:
    • "Swing" by Earthgang, featuring Benji, is a fantastic fusion of rock and hip-hop, much like Peter and Miles's leitmotifs, alongside lyrics that convey the two's drives to protect New York and make references to Spider-Man lore.
    • An instrumental version of "Cigarette Daydreams" by Cage the Elephant perfectly captures the wistful and bittersweet nature of Peter and Harry's reunion.
  • Awesome Video Game Levels:
    • Make Your Own Choices features not only a mandatory visit to The Sanctum, but also has a fun chase against Black Cat while she's conjuring portals.
    • Don't Be Scared spices things up by having the player wreak havoc as Venom, and it climaxes with the final showdown with Kraven, providing some well needed Catharsis Factor after all the latter has done.
  • Badass Decay: Critics of the game have noted that, compared to his first game, Peter suffers from a noticeable drop in competence- with the story putting more focus on Peter, Miles and MJ as a team, Peter by himself suffers a lot more from The Worf Effect and fails to take out either Kraven or Venom by himself.
  • Base-Breaking Character: While Tony Todd's performance has been widely praised, the game's portrayal of Venom is polarizing. While many praise the fantastic writing, the portrayal of his deep-rooted conflict with Peter, as well as the legitimately frightening and utterly ruthless take on the character, seeing it as a return to form after a couple of divisive interpretations. However, many dislike the fact that he's presented with none of the sympathetic or redeeming qualities he usually has or his original non world ending villainous motives, being far closer in characterization to Knull or Dark Carnage instead and think that it makes him In Name Only as a result, as well as believing he should've had a bit more screentime to flesh him out more. And then there are those who are upset that his replacement host is Harry Osborn instead of Eddie Brock, some of which overlap with the second group.
  • Best Boss Ever: The game has four bosses that are not only contenders for "best boss in the game," but three of them are placed back-to-back in a succession of culminating tension and energy like nothing else.
    • The first is Miles' fight with Mr. Negative, with an energetic and frantic first half where both fighters are going all out against each other. Li fighting to survive, and Miles fighting for revenge. The second is a Battle in the Center of the Mind where Miles finally breaks out of his need for vengeance and overcomes his personal doubts, setting the stage for one of the fights soon to come. This is soon followed by...
    • Peter's duel with Kraven, where the Hunter is enraptured by Peter's horrifying transformation throughout, and is throwing all sorts of traps and weapons at him. Their large array of tools and willingness to abuse the Symbiote's weakness to noise creates a desperate brawl where even as you're driven to win, you're not fully on board with what might happen next. And then results of the player's victory boil over into...
    • The tragic, terrifying fight with Peter, where the original Amazing Spider-Man's demons are put on full display. Not only does the Dueling Player Characters scenario make for a challenging and frantic battle, but Miles' attempts to break through to Peter and his mentor's gradual return to himself elevate it from great, to transcendent.
    • The final battle between the Spider-Men and Venom. In this particular scenario, an intense, emotionally charged four-stage battle against a Humanoid Abomination ensues. The high stakes of the fight are not only for the fate of New York but also for the world, all while the objective of freeing Harry from the symbiote is being pursued. The battle takes place in a dramatic setting, at Pete and Harry's former high school and the ruined Emily-May Foundation, with the added effect of the rain. The battle was a testament to the skill of both sides, with the tide of the fight constantly changing and both sides fighting their hardest to win.
  • Broken Base:
    • The Scream boss fight. Fans have been split on whether it works or not ever since the game first released. Those who like it think that it's a very moving "I Know You Are in There Somewhere" Fight that's both scary and tearjerking due to Peter being on the reverse end of a Symbiote battle, especially as he has to fight someone he loves unconditionally. Meanwhile, detractors of the fight feel that it simply repeats what was already done with the Miles vs. Peter fight in a more tedious and less interesting way. The dialogue between Spider-Man and Scream in particular is a hot topic of debate, as some felt that seeing Scream rage about Peter's shortcomings such as paying the bills or losing jobs made it impossible to take her seriously, while others feel that the venting about mundane things that MJ has had to deal with regarding Peter made the fight feel even more emotionally charged, especially with Laura Bailey and Yuri Lowenthal's acting selling the moment.
    • While few people have admitted to liking Miles's Evolved Suit, the jury's out on exactly how bad it is. Some see it as a potentially cool costume that just suffers from a few design flaws (as evidenced by several fan recreations that do things like get rid of the exposed hair) while others see it as a trainwreck down to the most minute detail to the extent of ruining the final act and relentlessly mock it at every opportunity (the fact that it was revealed to literally be Product Placement also not helping). This was made somewhat moot after New Game Plus was added and allowed players to switch suits in the last mission, but the debate still pops up.
    • The Digital Deluxe suits. While some of them have their fans, many of them are regarded as tacky and out-of-character for Spider-Man, with some even claiming upon their reveal that they looked A.I. generated (which they weren't).
    • Depending on who you ask, Miles's arc is either the best part of the story with the strongest writing in the game, or wasted potential due to him having very few solo missions that actually impact the plot, with most of them existing solely to kick off sidequests.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal:
    • If you are a fan of the comics, then it wasn't hard to piece together that The Flame is actually Cletus Kasady. His red hair was the first give away. The second was the blood pattern on his shirt. The final clue was the drawing of a fire monster in his manifesto that strongly resembles Carnage.
    • For the Cultural Museum sidequest, it's not too hard to figure out that Darren is the one behind the robberies for the museum. He always happens to turn up just when something has gone wrong, which conveniently gives him a reason not to invest in the museum, and his attempts to be sympathetic reek with insincerity.
  • Catharsis Factor: Kraven outright murdering Scorpion with the stinger of his own tail weapon. After all the shit the latter pulled in this game and the last, to say he had it coming would be an understatement.
  • Common Knowledge:
    • Some fans were quick to assume that in the ending cutscene, Peter "retires" as Spider-Man, with Miles becoming the sole Spider-Man. While this is true to an extent, it's often exaggerated to him retiring from Spider-Man completely, when Peter makes it clear he's simply taking a break to focus more on his personal life. Even so, his break doesn't last long, as not only can you still switch to him in the postgame, but when you first do so at Queens, the first thing he says is that his "break" is over.
    • Mary Jane gets a surprising amount of flak for some of her stealth takedowns, with detractors complaining that she pulls off martial arts moves and physical feats against Hunters that someone her size shouldn't be capable of. This criticism ignores the fact that she mentions during the abandoned zoo level that she had training from Silver Sable herself and that every single one of her stealth takedown animations involve her "Sable Stingray."note
  • Complete Monster:
    • The Venom symbiote is an extraterrestrial entity that arrived on Earth in a spiral-marked meteor with the intent of conquering it for the Hive. Costing Curt Connors his arm when it tried to bond to him, it was captured by Oscorp and used as an experimental treatment for Harry Osborn's terminal illness. Deeming Spider-Man—Peter Parker—a superior host, it tries to abandon Harry to bond to Spidey several times before Harry willingly relinquishes it to save Peter's life. Making Peter increasingly aggressive even towards his loved ones, the symbiote takes over him while he sleeps and viciously attacks Kraven's Hunters before trying to kill Mary Jane when she attempts to shock Peter awake. Attempting to goad Peter into killing Kraven, the symbiote fully takes over Peter and tries to kill Miles Morales before being defeated. Rejected by Peter, the symbiote re-bonds to Harry and twists his dream of healing the world to further its own goals—gaslighting him by impersonating his late mother. Influencing—if not outright controlling—Harry as Venom, the symbiote causes him to brutally kill dozens of Oscorp's security forces and Kraven's Hunters; kill Kraven by devouring his head; infect Mary Jane Watson with the Scream symbiote out of spite at Peter; and use the spiral meteor to unleash a horde of symbiotes to conquer the Earth. When Peter refuses to join it and resists its attempts to forcibly corrupt him, the Venom symbiote fully takes over Harry and tries to kill Peter and his loved ones.
    • The Flame, aka, "Cletus Kasady" is the alias of a psychopathic cult leader who has a noted history of gathering followers—often by kidnapping and brainwashing innocent people, gaslighting them into believing he cares about them, using them to commit heinous acts of violence and destruction, and ultimately manipulating them into killing themselves both to dispose of them when they've outlived their usefulness and for his own sadistic amusement. As "the Flame", he seeks to bring about the Crimson Hour—burning the world down one city at a time—by having his current group of followers commit arson and plant explosives in areas where mass civilian casualties will occur, such as a hospital or apartment block. Taunting Yuri Watanabe over her failure to stop him from disposing of his previous cult, the Flame lures her and Spider-Man into several traps, tries to burn Spider-Man alive, and then steals a surviving sample of the Venom symbiote—declaring his intent to use it to bring about the Crimson Hour by becoming the embodiment of Carnage.
  • Continuity Lock-Out: Despite the 2 in its title, the story (especially the bits focusing on Miles) is next-to-impossible to fully understand beyond the basic developments if you dive in straight from the original and skip Miles Morales, even with the optional recap. Several characters introduced in the latter play major roles in both the main plot and side missions, certain ways the story advances are direct references to its narrative, and it skips over re-explaining several details players would miss (e.g. how Miles's suit was made, the nature of his electric powers, and why he feels the need to prove himself).
  • Crossover Ship: Some fans ended up shipping Peter Parker with Astarion from Baldur's Gate III thanks to a photo-edit of the two from RockRider that ended up getting retweeted by Yuri Lowenthal (Peter's VA), who jokingly stated that the two made out after the "photo" was taken.
  • Demonic Spiders:
    • The Robot Hunter Dogs, they attack much faster than most enemies, can break themselves out of your ground combos, following up with an even faster attack, and can set themselves prone to disable your abilities while the rest of the crowd hounds you. They also gain Super Armor while doing that. Assuming you're fighting the ones that are disabling your web shooters, the saving grace is that they are absolutely helpless in the air, allowing you to wail on them.
    • Hunter Brutes, particularly the ones with weapons. Save for being parried and your (Symbiote) abilities, they are almost invulnerable. Not only do they move quick for their size and have large health pools, but their big shields render it difficult to land hits on them without proper strategy, especially if you're surrounded by other enemies.
    • The Symbiote monsters. They hit like damn trucks! And durable to boot, even with upgraded damage. They all have Crush Attacks that are iffy to avoid at best. Good luck getting more than 3 hits in since they're the only grunt enemies that can gingerly escape your combos and air-cancel out of your air combos. They also come in packs, swarms at a time even. There are three special variants, distinguished by red, pink, and green respectively
      • The red grabber variant can yank you without warning into a rioting horde of fellow symbiotes, all likely attacking simultaneously whilst it charges its heavy attack.
      • The pink ranged variant, shooting goo out of its body means you technically can't disarm it. This is the least of your worries, it can produce medium sized glowing tentacles that can take out your entire health bar if they detonate. Try doing this while surviving the rest of the hoard
      • The green rushers. Good luck hitting these little shits at all. Try and they'll dodge and quickly counter attack before you can process a spider-sense indicator. Thankfully webbing takes them out in one shot.
      • Did we forget to mention the fourth variety? The Symbiote Behemoths are actual tanks. While the rest swarm you, they step in with heavy handed combos you must avoid at all costs, or they simply charge at you off-screen without warning, and you die.
  • Epileptic Trees: The absence of the "Nelson and Murdock, Attorneys at Law" sign on launch, combined with a developer teasing content related to Daredevil, set the fandom into a frenzy with theories about the DLC... and then the sign was added to the game in a post-launch patch, indicating that it was just a flub on the part of the developers.
  • Evil Is Cool:
    • This incarnation of Venom is being hailed by fans and critics alike as one of his most intimidating, scary and badass versions seen in media. The Juggernaut portrayal of Venom is capped off by what's considered a great performance by the Candyman himself, Tony Todd.
    • Kraven the Hunter manages to be one of this Spider-Man’s most cunning and badass foes. His Graceful Loser acceptance death also was rather positively received by fans and considered rather cool.
  • Fandom Rivalry:
  • Fanon: The game never addresses it, but a number of players assume that the decreased police involvement in the game resulted from Peter having a falling out with the NYPD after Yuri quit the force in The City That Never Sleeps, since she was pretty much the only reason why Spidey had any sort of partnership with the police in the first place.
  • Franchise Original Sin: One of the biggest points of contention that makes Miles' Evolved Suit so hated is that it incorporates real life Adidas sneakers. The Classic Miles suit from the spinoff also includes sneakers into the costume, but it was much more tolerable there since the shoes had a generic (possibly even homemade, in-universe) design that was so streamlined that it's hard to notice that they even are separate from the rest of the suit outside of photo mode.
  • Friendly Fandoms: In a similar vein to 2020's Doom Eternal/Animal Crossing: New Horizons and 2023's Barbenheimer relationships due to coming out on the same day, the game's release date coincides with that of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, leading to fans of both series to joyfully share their anticipation.
  • Game-Breaker: Miles' Mega Venom Blast supercharges his combat loop by giving him a powerful explosion that defeats most common enemies in one shot, recharges his Venom abilities, and completely fills his Focus, allowing him to immediately perform up to three Finishers. Using said Finishers and his Venom abilities will fully refill the Mega Venom Blast meter, letting him immediately do it again. There's a good reason he doesn't get it back until near the very end of the game. On New Game Plus, he has it the whole time, which can make most fights on even the highest difficulty borderline trivial if you're skilled enough.
  • Game-Breaking Bug: As cool as playing as Venom is, there are some bugs that can render the game Unwinnable by Design. Since he's not meant to be played for free-roam, Venom can glitch in certain situations, such as Hunter chases, and dashing on a building to get high ground, which can result him clipping through buildings.
  • Good Bad Bugs:
    • The Symbiote Nest missions can be cheesed by switching from a suit with normal webbing to one with black/symbiote webbing (or vice-versa) after the timer on the left side of the screen shows up. This somehow causes the timer to go down to zero, ending the mission instantly. This only works with Peter though.
    • Some players have reported instances of the Spider-Men turning into a floating cube. Yes, really. What makes it even funnier is that the exact cause of the bug still hasn't been discovered - all that is known about it is that it triggers when the suit textures fail to load. People were so amused by this glitch that within hours of it being patched, humorous declarations like "R.I.P. Spider-Cube" were being posted.
    • If you're in the middle of the story after getting the black suit but before doing sidequests with Wraith, Spider-Man becomes shiny as a result.
    • You can break through the boundaries of Venom's mission and run around the map, which has some hilariously amusing results. Just make sure to do it on a manual save, as doing this can break the game.
    • There's a newer version of the glitch where after make a manual save and after you defeat Kraven as Venom, once the cutscene fades to black, exit the game and return. You'll be Spider-Man, and once you open a side mission, abandon it immediately. Now you have a fully functional playable Venom who can go around fighting criminals in his own brutal way like old times.
    • Hopping on chairs near the abandoned building in Astoria will make Peter and Miles shoot up in the air, to the point that you can reach the map's maximum height. This can also cause them to go outside of the playable map and end up on the background parts of New York.
    • Prior to the New Game Plus update, the game didn't permit the player to change the time of day. However, a glitch involving the Mysterium challenges did allow the player to choose between evening and night. It's actually a godsend in the "good" of good bad bugs if you are eternally locked into fighting Symbiotes, Hunters, and Cultists, the three enemy factions that constantly show up post-game, entering the Mysteriums can actually reset the enemy pool so you can have all four factions to fight.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Jokes were made before the game's release about Spider-Man and Shocker recreating the infamous SHOCKER!!!! moment from Spider-Man: The Animated Series. Sadly, Shocker is one of Kraven's victims in his mad quest to die a good death, long before Peter bonds with the symbiote.
    • J. Jonah Jameson's another source of comedy in the first game (and Miles Morales), aside from his exaggerated vitriol towards Spider-Man, is his treatment towards Jared, where him being a Butt-Monkey is played for comedy. Come this game (where he is now back as Daily Bugle's Editor-in-Chief), and his treatment of employees isn't played for comedy; employees under him are continuously sacked and under the threat of being fired by him, to the point where even MJ isn't safe from this threat. This very toxic work environment puts a serious toll on MJ's psyche, and (while under the symbiote's control) factors greatly on how she is heavily affected under pressure, and how damaging it is to her mental health.
    • Black Cat's story to rescue her lover becomes this after Erica Lindbeck admitted that she recorded her final scene when her boyfriend, Billy Kametz, was hospitalized for his fatal battle with colon cancer. Her "thank you" towards Miles was even ad-libbed because of that.
  • He Really Can Act:
    • Yuri Lowenthal's ability to deliver an emotional performance through dialogue was never called into question, but Peter's screams of pain whenever the black suit is in the vicinity of a loud sound are so convincing that it practically sounds like Lowenthal was actually being tortured in the recording booth. He also does an incredible job depicting Peter's gradual corruption thanks to the Symbiote's influence, making his bubbling rage and hatred genuinely frightening after two games of his friendly and lighthearted personality we've seen in previous games.
    • Despite coming off the heels of the rather talented Scott Porter, Graham Phillips as Harry Osborn has been embraced by fans for nailing both the character's warm and gregarious personality when he's healthy, and also his jealous bitterness when his illness comes back. For someone whose main claim to fame was a live-action Ben 10 movie, Phillips really makes a hell of an impression in his first voice acting role.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Air currents, depicted as glowing rings, let Spidey to essentially fly. A superhero game where a hero in red and blue uniform flies through rings?
  • Ho Yay:
    • As is the norm, Harry and Peter’s relationship is ripe with it, even more than usual. The fact that one of the first things Harry does after his reunion with Pete is offering him a dream job has a grand romantic gesture and his giant “Welcome Peter” is reminiscent of a marriage proposal. Throughout the game, the pair are constantly throwing innuendo at each other that borders on flirting. The fact that Peter relationship with MJ has less passion and is more chaste than usual only makes the one with he has with Harry more noteworthy. It’s very strongly implied that Harry’s condition is the main reason Peter decides to take a break from being Spider-Man, something his surrogate mother’s death in the first game didn’t even do. Canonically, the last mission of the story is a post-game mission where Peter has to spread a plant hybrid Harry created that’s all but stated to be a Someone to Remember Him By.
    • Peter is very dedicated to saving Harry in the third act. He even flat-out says that he loves him after the final battle, and though it's supposed to be a Platonic Declaration of Love, the framing in conjunction with Harry's overall portrayal as this game's The Not-Love Interest causes it to come off otherwise.
    • Likewise, the Symbiote's tendency to be portrayed as a Yandere towards Peter carries over into this game, with Venom (influenced by an extreme version of Harry's feelings towards Peter, which carry their own Ho Yay) attempting to kill MJ by declaring that Peter no longer needs her and suggestively wrapping Peter's body in tentacles as he attempts to invade his body.
    • Kraven gets really excited during his fight with Venom because of his Blood Knight tendencies, and a lot of his lines during it heavily play up the Interplay of Sex and Violence.
Kraven: Yes! YES! You WILL be my final hunt! And I...shall be your first!
  • I Knew It!:
    • Many fans have predicted that the Symbiote black suit would be featured in this game due to the inclusion of Venom in the teaser trailer and the costume being one of Spidey's most iconic outfits. The PlayStation Showcase trailer would confirm the Black Suit's presence. Not just that, but many also predicted the Spider-Man 3 version of the Black Suit would appear as an unlockable suit, and sure enough, come the "Expanded Marvel's New York" trailer, they were right—albeit as an alternate costume for Spider-Man's regular suit rather than the symbiote.
    • In a similar vein, when posters for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse started releasing, fans noticed that in one of them, the Peter Parker from this game's continuity appeared with web wings as a part of his suit. Many speculated that this was minor Foreshadowing that they would be a mechanic in this game. Sure enough, Web Wings are a new way to get around the city.
    • Venom's identity was pretty vague other than Word of God saying that it wouldn't be Eddie Brock wearing the symbiote. This led many to declare that it must be Harry Osborn, since we see Norman using the symbiote to heal Harry in the stingers of the first two games. Come the game's release, and it turns out they were absolutely right.
Harry: We're going to heal the world.
      (later in the trailer...)
Venom: We're going to heal the world.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: C'mon, did you really think Peter would actually die of his injuries at the abandoned zoo? Especially since Harry had the symbiote on hand and Peter hadn't gotten his black suit yet by that point in the story. Some fans have questioned why even bother with the fake-out death at all, though it does lend a heroic, if tragic weight to Harry's decision to sacrifice his life-support and superpowers in one to save his best friend's life, despite knowing he'll quickly decline without it.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Sergei Kravinoff, better known as Kraven the Hunter, is determined to have a "worthy" death rather than succumbing to cancer. Reaching New York to find more dangerous game, Kraven has numerous Super Villains kidnapped by his Hunter Army so he can hunt them, constantly disappointed that none can kill him. Finally encountering Spider-Man in the Symbiote Costume, Kraven quickly figures out the alien's weakness and later kidnaps Miles to coerce Peter Parker into a fight. Almost succeeding in goading Spider-Man into killing him, when the Symbiote bonds with Harry Osborn to become Venom, Kraven finally gets his Last Hunt, calmly thanking Venom before finally having his worthy death.
  • Memetic Badass:
    • Mary Jane has quickly obtained this status thanks to her more action-focused gameplay compared to the first game and her being able to take down more powerful foes such as hunters and the symbiotes thanks to a customized stun gun. Many have quickly hyped her to be on the same level as John Wick.
    • Spider-Man the cat tanks an awful amount of punishment in the game whenever Miles suffers injuries in cutscenes. This is noticeable in New Game Plus when Sandman throws Miles in the Bodega suit several miles away, the cat looks no worse for wear despite being thrown through buildings and rooftops.
  • Memetic Loser:
    • The Hunters ended up being this for the fandom, due to them being unable to sense Mary Jane's presence, despite supposedly being trained paramilitary operatives, especially in every combat operation. While Sable Troops can be excused as Sable herself is delegated into becoming Norman's bodyguard (preventing her from properly vetting the troops under her), the Hunters, on the other hand, possess special forces level training (owing to their capacity for tracking targets, and their familiarization in jungle and urban warfare) but easily get blindsided by a civilian, who only received a crash-course training with Sable while in Symkaria.
    • Peter Parker has gained this reputation in certain circles, due to the fact that in this game he is more susceptible to suffering from The Worf Effect, or the fact that he needed help to defeat Kraven.
    • Mary Jane has become the subject of mockery amongst anime fans for being one of the few known fictional characters to fumble the iconic bike slide from AKIRA as she's being chased by symbiote-controlled Peter. The fact that only weeks later, another game pulls off a cleaner "AKIRA Slide", solidifies MJ's status as this even further.
    • Miles's Evolved Suit has become the target of never-ending mockery thanks to it looking unintentionally ridiculous to many fans from its colors, wearing "Adidas" sneakers, and having his hair exposed (which makes hiding his identity much harder). While some are willing to say that it looks good with some minor touchups, most fans were more than happy to roast its appearance.

  • Most Wonderful Sound: When Peter has the black suit (or tendril colors are set to black in the settings), certain powers like Symbiote Surge cause him to let out an angry, distorted, yet cathartic scream, which makes them feel that much more powerful.
  • Narm:
    • The fight between Miles and Peter is one of the most emotionally overwhelming moments in the game, but sometimes he'll do an extremely melodramatic cheer with his hands if you die, as if he just won a game of checkers. The contrast is so sudden that it's difficult not to find it funny, especially if it interrupts the serious dialogue.
    • The boss fight featuring Peter facing off against MJ-as-Scream is epic and action-packed... until the dialogue devolves into what sounds like a couple's counseling session gone off the rails, as the giant, raging, terrifyingly murderous alien symbiote complains that Peter can't hold down a job or pay his mortgage.
  • Narm Charm: While the fight with Scream does feel a bit like a bizarre therapy session for a strained couple's relationship stuffed into a video game, Peter's genuinely devastated and downright tearful tone as he apologizes to MJ for his shitty behavior while begging her to fight off the Scream symbiote's influence really sells the emotionally-charged stakes of the fight, and Scream's vindictive tone mixed with MJ's confusion over what's happening makes what's happening legitimately upsetting.
  • Older Than They Think:
  • Salvaged Gameplay Mechanic: Mary-Jane's stealth missions were heavily criticized in the first game for being very repetitive, due to being unable to fight back against enemies and being somewhat superfluous to the plot. In this game, her missions are far more action-packed and story relevant, with MJ being able to tase and shoot sonic blasts at enemies, and doing more impactful things for the story such as attempting to rescue Dr. Connors, confronting the Symbiote when it's taken control over Peter and fighting Venom's spawn in the climax.
  • Scrappy Mechanic:
    • While technically useful, the addition of the web wings has proven to be rather controversial among some of the fanbase due to how much better they are than web swinging for traversing most of the map. The wings' generous duration, the abundance of jet streams and updrafts, and the Spider-Men's mid-air jump abilities all allow the player to essentially fly indefinitely and make it more efficient in many instances to just glide using very few webs. Some feel this takes away from the most fun and unique part of the characters' gameplay and leads many to ignore the wings entirely.
    • Random crimes. In the first game, they were mandatory for map completion, and in Miles Morales, they were at least helpful for collecting tokens. With this game being a lot more generous with tokens, it doesn't take long for the player to lose incentive to do these tasks and just serve as an interruption.
  • Self-Imposed Challenge: Symbiote enemies are much harder to fight as Miles than as Peter, since Miles lacks any form of Anti-Venom attacks. Miles can use his evolved venom powers to give himself more breathing room, but they don't provide any damage buffs against the symbiotes so it's still a war of attrition.
  • Sequel Difficulty Spike:
    • Healing now requires a full bar of focus, and most bosses need two full focus bars to perform special moves on.
    • Some enemy attacks can only be blocked, and dodging simply gets you hurt.note  And there are other attacks that can only be dodged, and being anywhere near the attacker gets you killed.
    • While in the previous games health, damage and speed upgrades came naturally as you leveled up, here you need to craft them from parts you gain from side missions.
  • Spiritual Successor:
    • The black suit's combat making use of tendrils has drawn some comparisons to [PROTOTYPE].
    • The presence of Venom, combined with the ability to free roam in Queens may remind some of Ultimate Spider-Man (2005). The fact that Venom is playable (although in only one mission) is just icing on the cake.
    • The presence of Venom, Peter having a much more aggressive moveset while wearing the Symbiote, and the late game where Symbiotes start taking control of New York under Venom's lead brings to mind Spider-Man: Web of Shadows.
  • Tainted by the Preview:
    • The news that Eddie Brock would not be the host of the Venom symbiote in the game's continuity did not go over well with many within the Venom fandom and some general fans. The implication — and later confirmation — that Harry Osborn was the symbiote's host, while not unexpected as it was heavily foreshadowed in the stingers of the previous two games, was also poorly received due to continued disdain towards Harry having been Venom in Ultimate Spider-Man (2012).
    • The reveal that the estimated gameplay length of both the main story and 100% completion is roughly the same as the first game despite the greatly expanded map, twice the protagonists, and other features has lead to discontent amongst the fandom.
  • That One Boss:
    • When you finally get to fighting Kraven, he’s no joke. The first thing you will find in phase one is that he can simply air cancel out of your air combos. While the first phase is fine enough, he makes use of speedy-to-slow attack strings in the second phase. Various crush attacks, and a giant bell; Which stuns you in intervals of 1 second, efficiency making you fresh meat for him. Fail to crawl to the bell and web it up in time and he transitions into his more aggressive patterns. Such as a smoke bomb to reposition himself, aiming his sniper scope which takes a deceptively long time to fire, with a tight dodge window, and takes out enough health to effectively one-shot you if you took a small bit of damage beforehand. Or throwing an axe at you. Later into to fight he disappears and calls in those robotic dogs, which as mentioned earlier in the page, attack fast, have light Super Armor and can prone themselves to disable your abilities. He comes in later to attack in unison with them, and if you piss him off enough, he’ll ring that damn bell again!
    • Immediately after the above, you fight Black suit Peter. Mentally corrupted by the symbiote, angry that Miles wouldn’t let him kill Kraven. Like you might be. While he’s much more susceptible to combos. He has insane range. All the time. Various basic, crush, and heavy attacks at all ranges make it suicidal to stand or not trying to find a way to stun him (Such as the bell) Dance in the air too long and he has a crush attack with insane range and can tag you out whenever you are, legitimately one-shotting you. Chances are you didn’t even see the indicator as he prepped it.
  • That One Sidequest:
    • Gathering the Spider-Bots. While it's more tedious than difficult, the locations of the bots are at times pretty vague even with the visual cue indicating their vicinity, and some of them are in places you either wouldn't think to look or are difficult to reach. Also, they're spread apart from each other in the open world with no rhyme or reason and there's no waypoint on the map for them, meaning that for each one you just happen to stumble upon there's one you'll be swinging around aimlessly like a dumbass trying to find. Not to mention, there's no way to make them show up on your map and there's 42 of the flipping things. The only way to mitigate this is to wait until you can unlock the All Seeing ability so you can see them on the compass if you're near one, but you probably won't be able to afford it until well after the sidequest opens and the game doesn't tell you it can do that, so by the time you figure it out, you'll probably have looked up the locations to get the quest over with anyway.
    • By and large, the Mysteriums are much less challenging than the Taskmaster missions in the first game or the AR missions in Miles Morales, with the Bronze, Silver and Gold targets being more generous than what was previously seen (such as defeating thugs in around three to five minutes). The Mysterium in Harlem, Under Construction, is the noteworthy outlier. The main objective, like in most other locations, is to defeat twenty thugs in the shortest amount of time. But the Gold target time is widely seen as a touch too strict at exactly one minute. Clearing out that many enemies under that short a time takes a lot of practice and a bit of fortune, as not hitting half the quota by the timer’s halfway mark usually means failure. It’s best to go for Gold, or just the Mysterium itself, after investing in enough Damage Suit Tech and Gadget Upgrades, and acquiring the Mega Venom Blast with Miles, as these would make one’s life much easier.
    • While not exactly difficult, unlocking the Ultimate Level rewards on New Game Plus can be an extremely tedious task even with your prior supplies carrying over. Firstly, for the Golden Gadgets and additional Suit Mods, you're required to have an enormous amount of equipment for even a single one (including tech part counts in the thousands each). Second, Peter's additional symbiote suit styles only unlock one at a time as you level up, which wouldn't be too daunting if not for the fact that 1.) it takes a staggering 40,100 experience points to reach the next level and 2.) there's a total of 9note .
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • Fans quickly discovered that a majority of Peter's suits from the prior game didn't return. While there's a good number of reasons why that's the case, Miles having a pretty hefty number of returning suits and the majority of Pete's including some of the new ones being movie tie-ins hasn't helped the backlash. The most glaring omission to fans, surprisingly, is The Bombastic Bag-Man due to it being tied to the Venom story in the comics.
    • A more minor change, but some fans missed extra content like the in-game social media feed or the Daily Bugle newspaper headings, as their inclusion in the first game (first two games, in the case of the former) fleshed out the world, showcased the general public's reaction to Spider-Man and to the events of the story, and provided a home for a number of Easter Eggs as well as extra comedic moments. Here, the outside perspectives have been reduced to just the two podcast feeds, and the ability to replay those in-game has also been removed.
    • The Reveal of Harry Osborn becoming Venom. Despite being warned ahead of time, fans of Eddie Brock did not take it well. The same goes for the symbiote's characterization. While the presentation and expanded powerset of the monster have been warmly received, many feel the symbiote's redeeming qualities such as its genuine loyalty to certain hosts or its Redemption Quest from the comics being omitted was a mistake.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Kraven's killing of several major members of Spider-Man's Rogue Gallery, including half the Sinister Six, (most of them off-screen) has naturally caused this. It seems like such a waste that these iconic villains are just thrown aside in the sequel with almost no fanfare. A particular stand-out is Shocker, who, in a refreshing twist from their usual dynamic, seemed to have an almost friendly relationship with Spider-Man if the dialogue during his boss fight in the first game was any indication, yet he is unceremoniously killed off-screen and Peter never acknowledges his death. Another standout is Vulture who had already received criticism for being the least utilized of the Sinister Six in the first game.
    • Black Cat appears in one mission that has no impact on the plot whatsoever, and then doesn't show up or get mentioned again (due to going to Paris). It's the first time she and Miles directly interact and their screen time together shows they have a pretty good dynamic, so one wonders what could've been done had she stuck around and given more chances to interact with Miles. She also does not interact with Peter beyond giving him a tip on Tombstone's location despite their close relationship in the previous game, which is rather disappointing, as it would've been interesting to see how she reacts to him under the Symbiote.
    • After the build-up of her becoming Wraith in the DLC for the first game, it's somewhat disappointing to see Yuri Wantanabe relegated to a sidequest with little involvement with Peter's struggles with the symbiote. Given how Peter's actions under the symbiote's influence cause him to veer dangerously close to Wraith's own form of extreme vigilantism, one could imagine a further exploration of their relationship.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Harry only becomes Agent Venom for three missions worth of the story, of which there are only two he actually appears in. Not only do he and Peter establish a name for themselves and act as a genuine team when they first fight together, but there were a few hints suggesting that he would stick around a bit even after that, note  yet this possibility is quickly nixed in favor of Peter getting the Black Suit earlier. Had things taken a bit more time, there could've been a level or two with a trio of Spider-Men instead of a duo.
  • Unconventional Learning Experience: The Cultural Museum Sidequest ends with Miles exploring a museum with exhibits giving a short rundown of (mostly) real (if obscure) historical figures who had a hand in the Harlem Renaissance, or African-American music and poetry in general. Quite a reward for such a quest.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • It was a pleasant surprise to see Martin Li/Mr. Negative having a major role in the game, especially after his absence in the DLC of the first game and Miles Morales, which led to his conflict with Miles being thus far unaddressed.
    • While his existence in the game was leaked beforehand, the Launch Trailer reveals that the Sandman, last seen trapped in a vial Peter had webbed at Avengers Tower, has since broken free and makes a proper appearance.
    • Nobody could have expected Scream to appear, much less the fact she's Mary Jane exposed to the Symbiote.
    • Of all the spider characters to show up, very few were expecting Cindy Moon, otherwise known as Silk, to appear in the second post credits scene.
    • While many fans expected that Harry would likely end up being Venom, him beforehand being Agent Venom was quite a surprise.
    • Part of the main story involves Black Cat stealing the Wand of Wattomb from the Sanctum Sanctorum. And while he isn't directly seen, when Miles gets it back from her, Wong sends him a note thanking him for looking after the Sanctum while he and Doctor Strange were busy in Nepal.
  • Unnecessary Makeover: Miles' Evolved Suit has received criticism from fans for how over-designed and unintentionally dumb it looks, with the biggest criticisms going to the exposed hair, which many found ridiculous (unlike other cases like Pavitr Prabhakar or the Spider-Women), the colors, which are seen as gaudy, and the addition of things like a hood that isn’t even worn and "Adidas" sneakers, which are seen as needless and tacky additions that overcomplicate the outfit. A common claim is that while it would've been fine as an alternate costume, it should not have become his main suit, especially not over his iconic black and red costume. Beyond that, he first puts it on during an ongoing alien attack, implying he thought it was very important to change outfits (despite it not actually changing his abilities unlike a symbiote) to change into something he wanted to wear more. The only saving grace is that like most of the suits, you can swap it with something else immediately after it's unlocked.note
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: There's a reason this game is only available on PlayStation 5.
    • Insomniac refined their raytracing such that Spider-Man 2 doesn't feature the "Performance RT" mode from Remastered and Miles Morales, because raytracing is now the active regular Performance mode (just to a lesser degree than the Fidelity mode). This is especially impressive considering the use of raytracing on the rivers and oceans, which is never seen in the console space.
    • Like Insomniac's past few titles, this game includes a 40 FPS fidelity option on 120Hz compatible displays; while this affects the overall resolutionnote , it essentially combines both fidelity and performance modes together, resulting in the framerate feeling a lot smoother than 30 FPS doesnote , but without compromising any visual effects while rely on temporal data (including full ray-tracing).
    • While the SSD load times were impressive in the last two games on PlayStation 5, it's taken to a whole new level here with how the fast-travel works. Pick any position on the map screen, hold Triangle, and in the space of a second the camera swoops down onto the street (fading from the 3D map to the real New York) and Spider-Man swings / glides into frame for you to take control. A truly jaw-dropping feat of technical expertise and quite possibly the best fast travel system ever made (were it not for the fact that you need to do side-quests in that district to unlock it there first).
    • Speaking of, the devs also used raytracing on the windows to pull off 3D-modelled rooms behind the glass of every window of every building!
    • Insomniac also uses the portal window technology from Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart to pull off a fully convincing view through the Mysterium portals, with proper depth on the green smoke tunnel. This and the SSD load times are used to great effect in the Black Cat mission, where Miles chases her across various sections of New York and for a brief moment, Antarctica, thanks to a portal-making artifact.
  • WTH, Costuming Department?:
    • Miles's infamous Evolved Suit. As mentioned above, fans consider its color scheme tacky, the mask leaves Miles's hair out in the open and potentially exposes his identity, and he's wearing Adidas sneakers.
    • While the Anti-Venom suit is a really cool design, the game's visual style prioritizing a more slimy look for symbiotes makes the suit look like Peter coated himself with his, erm, other kind of web fluid...
