Characters / Unicorn Overlord The Liberation Army

Go To

Led by Crown Prince Alain, tutored by the knight Josef, and supported by a handful of dedicated fighters, this band of clandestine freedom fighters hopes to return to the mainland and form an army from the many oppressed, ignored, and persecuted peoples of Galerius' new empire and avenge the fall of Queen Ilenia.

    In General
  • The Alliance: The vast majority of the game is spent growing the Liberation Army into this. By the end, it will consist of warriors and head of states from every corner of Fevrith. Is for that reason that, as the epilogue reveals, the Liberation Army will be forevermore remembered in history as the "Unicorn Alliance".
  • Blue Is Heroic: They use a blue crest by default, likely referencing the old Cornian crest.
  • La Résistance: Starts of as this; the game starts the player off with only an handful of fighters.
  • Rightful King Returns: The ultimate goal of the Liberation Army. They seek to cast down Galerius' Zenoiran Empire and reinstate Crown Prince Alain as the rightful ruler of Cornia.

    Alain

Class: Lord → High Lord
Crown prince of the fallen kingdom of Cornia, and son of its queen, Ilenia. After losing his mother at a young age amidst Cornian general Valmore's rebellion, he was ushered to the island of Palevia by the knight Josef, who taught him sword and strategy alike until the age of 17.
  • All Amazons Want Hercules: Inverted. Some of Alain's potential brides like Amalia and Berenice are Blood Knights and accomplished warriors; the former in particular is x1.5 his height. In fact, if Alain picks Amalia, she tells him he'll have to beat her in a fight if he wants her that badly.
  • All-Loving Hero: Downplayed, in that the player ultimately controls his actions and can choose to avoid it in many cases, but Alain has the opportunity to be incredibly kind, understanding, and forgiving towards surrendering enemies, and in many cases will be even without the player's input. This largely pays off; most of the people he spares join his rebellion out of gratitude, tying into the game's Central Theme of forgiveness and moving on rather than clinging to grudges and the wounds of the past.
  • Animal Motifs: Unicorns, naturally. On top of his default heraldry incorporating two of them, when he promotes, his armor gets a slight visual upgrade, sure, but he also mounts a lavishly decorated horse in armor that makes it resemble a unicorn. He also embodies the innocence, purity, and elusiveness of a unicorn, being almost tirelessly friendly and forgiving of his many enemies and allies alike, while simultaneously aloof regarding the feelings of his many suitors, at least until the player has him settle (or not, if he opts for a platonic maiden instead).
  • Anti-Cavalry: His unlockable active skill at Level 10, Cavalry Slayer, removes both active and passive point and inflicts Guard Seal if they are considered a cavalry unit. Ironically, he becomes a cavalry unit himself through his promotion.
  • Anti-Infantry: Upon promoting to High Lord, he deals double damage against infantry-type units, due to being a cavalry unit.
  • Bookworm: Like Travis, Alain is an avid reader. It also pops up in other rapport conversations like with Rosalinde who interrupts his reading to hit on him and he's too focused on his book to notice.
  • But Not Too Bi: Downplayed; While he can give the "Ring of the Maiden" to characters of either gender, the majority of his interactions with other male characters are platonic bromances and pledges of loyalty, with only a few involving romantic feelings, such as with Gilbert (who is ambiguous given he still marries Virginia even if given the ring by Alain), Lhinalago, and Fodoquia. He also doesn’t marry these male characters after the exchange, with them instead being referred to as his "partner" and keeping the romance aspect understated. The narrative tends to treat these choices as a “right hand man” decision.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: He repeatedly steps in the line of fire and takes blows aimed for his allies, getting injured or almost killed a few times for his trouble. Several times he's criticized for it, as his death would end the liberation army faster than than any of theirs.
  • Chick Magnet: Alain is strong, noble, handsome, and charismatic, all which gets a lot of attention from female characters. In the main story alone both Scarlett and Rosalinde openly express interest in him. If you include sidequests, this expands to include the likes of Melisandre (who outright offers to be his mistress). If you include rapports and marriageable characters, the number gets impressively big with many characters admitting they find him attractive, are falling for him, etc. in conversations with or about him. Should he have more than one rapport conversation with a female unit, the last one will usually feature him doing or saying something flirtatious or intimate enough to fluster her, with some having him all but confess romantic feelings that she is willing to return. Melisandre notably assumes he's going to have a large number of willing consorts in the future in addition to his actual wife (not that Alain himself necessarily has such intentions).
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: He's 17 and The Leader of the Liberation Army. While that always would be the case, the plan was to wait until he was a bit older before starting an open rebellion against Zenoira. However, the Empire's search for Scarlett made it so that the timetable had to be rushed.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Alain spent considerable time with a few of his potential marriage candidates during his youth, including Scarlett and Chloe. Averted with Lex, as while he can give him the "Ring of the Maiden," their relationship remains platonic.
  • Defend Command:
    • Alain starts with the Noble Guard passive skill, which both automatically guards against physickal attacks and grant himself a defense buff. It also grants himself an extra passive point, if his HP is below 50%.
    • At Level 5, Alain learns Luminous Cover, which allows him to cover an ally and grants the covered ally a defense buff.
  • Demonic Possession: Alcina intended to inflict this on him using the Zenoirans' dark magic, albeit using the late King Gerard's soul instead of one of their own. If you opt to execute Galerius instead of talk him down in the final story mission, he'll possess Alain and use him to establish an eternal Zenoira Empire.
  • Disappeared Dad: Alain's father is hardly brought up during the game. The only reference to him is Gailey offhandedly mentioning how Alain's father died some time before the events of ten years ago, implying that Alain's father died before Alain was old enough to remember him.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Alain can also end up romantically involved with several male characters. Male characters however tend to less openly hit on him during the main story, this being more limited to rapport conversations or entering covenants with them.
  • Experience Booster: His valor skill Royal Order increases the amount of experience earned by a targeted allied unit for one battle.
  • Expy: He has multiple characteristics very similar to that of several Lords in Fire Emblem:
  • Finishing Move: Several of his attacks offer extra benefits if they're used to eliminate a target, like Lean Edge's Life Drain or Spinning Edge refunding a point of AP.
  • Frontline General: He will fight with the rest of his army in the front - which is advisable, since he can block attacks with his shield.
  • Grow Old with Me: To Scarlett, if he chooses her to receive the Ring of the Maiden.
Alain: "Then stay with me, Scarlett. Until the day we both drift off into eternal slumber."
  • Harmful to Minors: Josef recounts to Virginia how by the time he and Alain reached Palevia, Alain was traumatized by what happened. He could hardly eat and has been distracted from his studies and training because he lost his entire family and home within that one single night. Fortunately, he slowly recovered from the trauma, thanks to his childhood friends.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Alain's default weapon is a sword.
  • Heroic Lineage: His mother, Queen Ilenia, and his grandfather, King Gerard, were both outstanding examples of Royals Who Actually Do Something. Alain hopes to live up to their legacy.
  • Hidden Depths: He has a deep appreciation for and interest in theater (though has had few chances to indulge this), practically jumping at the chance to practice with Morard in a play he puts on for children.
  • History Repeats:
    • In a rapport with Yahna, he steps in and takes a poisoned arrow meant for her. Thankfully she manages to save him and chews him out for putting his life on the line for her. They both note the irony that it's exactly how his grandfather, Gerard, died, with Alcina in Yahna's shoes.
    • Its mentioned that Gerard died after Ilenia was born, preventing her from really meeting him. Gailey implies that the same happened to Alain, mentioning how Ilenia's husband died.
  • Identical Grandson: He bears a striking resemblance to his grandfather Gerard, as seen in Alcina's flashback.
  • Interspecies Romance: Many of the non-human characters in Alain's army are potential marriage candidates.
  • Kissing Cousins: One of his potential marriage candidates is his older cousin, Virginia.
  • Life Drain: Alain's basic active skill, Lean Edge, heals him if his attack successfully hits the target and heals him more if he defeats the target.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Flashbacks show he greatly resembles his grandfather Gerard, with the only difference between them being the color of their armor. Like Gerard, he also risks his own life to save the life of his magic-wielding friend. The only difference is that whereas Alcina was unable to save Gerard's life from a poisoned arrow, Yahna is able to save Alain's.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: He starts with Noble Guard, a blocking skill that reduces incoming damage he takes and gives him PP if he's below 50% hit points (meaning he can keep blocking if he's injured). He rapidly learns Luminous Cover which lets him deflect attacks targeting allies.
  • Master of All: While primarily focused on physical attack and defense, Alain's base stats and growth means that essentially all his stats will be excellent and he can basically be used in any party setup. Even those which he isn't overly specialized in, such as Magical Attack, tend to be considerably higher than most non-magic focused characters. Fittingly, both of his growths are All-Rounder.
  • May–December Romance: Alain's relatively young compared to most of the cast, meaning several of the people he can get married to are older than he is. Perhaps the most blatant example of this is Yahna, whose precise age is never quite given but who was noted to be so old she was barely mobile before she restored her youth. Other notable examples include elven characters like Rosalinde and Eltolinde who similarly were adults during his childhood. Lesser examples include Berengaria and Monica, who are his elder by a few years.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: If he marries a female elf, which are either Rosalinde, Eltolinde, or Railanor. In his covenant scene with Rosalinde and Eltolinde, Alain acknowledges that his time with her will be short, but insist in loving her all the same.
  • Oblivious to Love: A recurring bit in his rapport conversations and some quest dialogue is that Alain seems to not notice when people are hitting on him, save for Melisandre who's so aggressive in her affections he's a bit unsettled.
  • One Head Taller: He is a head taller than some of his Love Interests, like Scarlett, Nina, and Yunifi. This is especially noticeable in their covenant scene, where the two stand close to each other.
  • Orphan's Plot Trinket: The Ring of the Unicorn, the only memento his mother was able to bestow him before the rise of the new Zenoiran empire. It has the power to dispel Mind Control and it becomes essential in the Liberation's effort to topple Galerius' rule. Interestingly, Alain only received the ring a decade or so after he lost his mother.
  • The Paladin: Has the general character of one and wields holy power via his ring. Gameplay wise, he’s like a World of Warcraft “Protection Paladin” placing emphasis on durability.
  • Protagonist Title: In the normal or good ending, Alain successfully retakes Cornia and defeats the Zenoiran Empire. The ending narration refers to him as the game's titular "Unicorn Overlord".
  • Rebel Leader: Of the Liberation Army.
  • Rescue Romance: Alain and Scarlett can only begin initiating their rapport conversation after she is rescued from the Zenoiran Empire, with their second rapport discusses how Alain felt lost and depressed without her by his side. Of course, the player can either subvert this trope by letting Alain pursue someone else and giving them the Ring of the Maiden, or play it straight by keeping the two together and giving her the Ring of the Maiden.
  • Secret-Keeper: Alain is the only person within the Liberation Army to learn that Scarlett is the daughter of Pontifex Arant a few days after she was rescued. No one else within the Liberation knew about it until they are closing in on Bisfaine Basilica, where Scarlett chooses to disclose her secret after Lex intuitively guesses her relationship with the Pontifex.
  • Self-Made Orphan: If he executes Galerius, he ends up killing Ilenia, who was used as Galerius's vessel. Galerius's disembodied soul even rubs it in his face that he killed his own mother, before possessing Alain.
  • Spin Attack: At Level 30 as a High Lord, he learns Spinning Edge, which allows him to deal damage to a row of enemies with 2 hit counts and 60 physickal potency. It also ignores half of the enemy's physickal defense and grant himself 1 PP if he defeats an enemy.
  • Sprint Shoes: Promoting Alain to his 2nd class, High Lord, gives him a horse. He can actually use the horse to move faster around the world map.

    Josef

Class: Paladin
A holy knight and former captain of the knights of the fallen kingdom of Cornia, he fled to Palevia with Alain ten years ago at Ilenia's behest. He has made great strides toward forming the Liberation Army ever since.
  • Crutch Character: Josef starts off at a vastly higher level compared to everyone else you can get in the start of the game, and with a Tier 2 class with 4 equipment slots, and more AP and PP. Most enemies will go down in one hit from him, and he can heal party members to ensure the rest of your team can survive. The downside is that he gets almost no EXP when he does fight, though due to the way the game works, he can serve as a good crutch for lower level formations to be helpful. As the player catches up, Josef becomes less impressive, and by the time he fights enemies around his level and starts getting experience again, the rest of the player's units will be on par with him already. His class, Paladin, is basically a slightly weaker version of the Sainted Knight, lacking the multi-target heal, and the ability to entirely block magic. This is subverted once he gets into the level 40 range, as by then he has gained a drastic increase to his stats, letting him be comparable to Alain.
  • Expy: Of Jagen from the first Fire Emblem, being an older man who escaped with a prince in exile. He even fulfills the gameplay role as he's a cavalry character that starts off powerful to ease the player into the game, but quickly falls off as the rest of the cast starts to surpass him.
  • Former Teen Rebel: Scarlett learns from an old friend of Josef, who retired to a priesthood at Palevia, that he used to be a troublemaker as a young man.
  • Mr. Exposition: Serves this role while explaining to Alain the basic game mechanics in the tutorial trailers for the game.
  • Old Retainer: Josef, the former captain of the Knights of Cornia who escaped with Alain, acts as his mentor and protector. Once the Liberation Army forms, he acts as something of an advisor to Alain.
  • The Paladin: High damage, high armor, high mobility, healing capabilities, and dedication to Alain's cause make him one of the most powerful and reliable characters in the early levels of the game. Gameplay wise he plays like a balanced paladin in contrast with the Radiant Knights, who aren't as powerful offensively, with a two hit Truestrike to cement his role as the more aggressive Radiant Knight counterpart.
  • Parental Substitute: In his Rapport with Alain, he briefly muses on how he's more or less the closest thing the Cornian prince has to a father figure after the king's death, though he quickly lambasts himself for thinking as he feels he isn't worthy of holding such a position.
  • Silver Fox: Josef has aged very gracefully for a man in exile.
  • That's an Order!: Josef is only willing to flee Cornia with Alain after being given a direct order by Queen Ilenia.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the Cornian Royal Family, particularly Ilenia and Alain.
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: In his basic ending, he becomes Alain’s personal blade.

    Scarlett
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scarlett_3.png
Voiced By: Hina Suguta (JP), Skyler Davenport (EN)
Class: Priestess → High Priestess
A priestess of the Palevian Orthodoxy who, after training tirelessly from a young age, now tends to the cathedral on the island of Palevia. In the end, she opts to leave the island and join Alain on his journey.
  • Abdicate the Throne: She gives the position of Pontifex to Sanatio so she can stay on Palevia, or with Alain as his queen if given the Ring of the Maiden.
  • Battle Ballgown: She wears gauntlets and eventually greaves but otherwise looks like she'd be just as at home in the temple as she does the battlefield, even when she promotes and adds a harness to reinforce the dress itself.
  • Betty and Veronica: Is the Betty alongside Rosalinde and Melisandre's Veronica, being the more traditionally feminine and girl next door type to Rosalinde's slyly flirtatious allure and Melisandre's aggressive tomboy.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Does not like it when other girls approach Alain with romantic intentions, with their final Rapport having her admitting to being jealous of how many other women in the army seem to be making advances on him.
  • Combat Medic: Her unique Priestess class allows her to both heal and use offensive magic in battle, something other healing classes are unable to do. This makes her effectively a combination of the Cleric and Witch classes in terms of being able to heal, attack, and provide support.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: Lex dreams that she's a terrible cook, where her attempt to follow one of Chloe's recipe causes a stench that makes Chloe pass out, and Alain flees when Lex tells him Scarlett cooked something, leaving Lex alone to taste it.
  • Damsel in Distress: The first act involves her being kidnapped by The Empire and Alain's efforts to rescue her.
  • Demonic Possession: Subjected to one in "Unicorn Overlord" if you went out of your way to avoid saving her. It's also heavily implied that Scarlett herself has become little more than an Empty Shell after she fulfilled her role in Galerius' plan.
  • Developers' Desired Date: While the player is free to pair Alain up with several characters of both genders, the game's writing pushes Scarlett as the default, or preferred choice. She's the first female character seen after the opening. The two share one on one scenes even outside rapport conversations (such as after her rescue where Alain is by her bedside). Unlike some of the other options, she's also not an optional character, meaning she has a continued involvement in the main plot. Also unlike other potential love interests, their rapport conversations start off as romantic from even the second level - with Alain admitting he could neither eat nor sleep while she was missing, and begging her to never leave him again. Scarlett's rapport conversations with other characters also make it clear she's got a crush on Alain.
  • Expy: Of Catiua from Tactics Ogre. First healer? Check. Only healer with offensive magic for most of the game? Check. Taken from the party? Check. Possibly unrecoverable? Also check. Her relationship with Alain is a reference to Celica's relationship with Alm in Fire Emblem Gaiden.
  • Form-Fitting Wardrobe: Her sweater clings very, very tightly to her chest.
  • Gainaxing: Scarlett's ample breasts bounce around in a lot of her animations.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: She enjoyed bug catching when she was younger and tries to show off her hobby to Virginia. Virginia is not amused.
  • Healer Signs On Early: Subverted. Scarlett possesses stronger healing magic than other classes and is one of the first units you have access to, making her helpful in the first proper level of the game. But she's then kidnapped after the very first mission of the game, and isn't available for several more encounters.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: The main difference between her Priestess class and the Cleric class is that Scarlett starts with "Holy Light", a weak magic attack (thus that ignores armor) that removes all active buffs on the targeted enemy, depicted as a pillar of light smiting the enemy.
  • King Incognito: She's the daughter of the Pontifex of the Palevian Orthodoxy. As the position is hereditary and her father is dead, she's effectively the next pontifex. This also makes her the target of Galerius, who required one with the blood of the Pontifex to break the seal on the Cornian Sanctuary to continue in his plans that were delayed by the death of the Pontifex.
  • Loves Me Not: In her rapport with Eltolinde, she is plucking off petals of Elheim flowers regarding Alain's reciprocity towards her. Eltolinde doesn't see the appeal of the game, since the flower used has even number of petals that will always give unfavorable outcomes. Eventually, Scarlett lets her try and see the appeal for herself, with Cornian flowers instead of the native Elheim ones. Of course, when Eltolinde chooses Alain as her object of affection, Scarlett is not happy about it.
  • The Medic: The first character with healing abilities to join Alain's cause, though her being kidnapped shortly after she appears means she isn't around for a while.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Downplayed due to her conservative wardrobe, but her outfit still accentuates her large breasts and they bounce around a lot.
  • The Red Mage: Scarlett is the only unit in the game capable of equipping both the normally attacking mage only conferral tomes and the accessories and staffs that are locked to support classes. This, coupled with her access to healing and attack magic, gives her a wider range of options than most other caster classes, which only do one or the other.
  • Regal Ringlets: She sports four curls on the back of her hair. Her regality comes from being the daughter of Pontifex Arant, the religious leader of the Palevian Orthodoxy in Albion.
  • Required Party Member: To leave Cornia for the other nations, it’s necessary to complete “The Priestess, Abducted” and get her back into your party; Scarlett has various degrees of significance to the plotlines (most notably Albion), so unless you want to enter the endgame severely underleveled (not to mention dooming her to death and yourself to the worst ending) you’ll be obliged to retrieve her first.
  • Sexy Sweater Girl: Scarlett wears a sweater that really accentuates her bust.
  • Status-Buff Dispel: Her semi-unique attack magic does Scratch Damage, but it can still be indirectly pretty lethal since it strips away all buffs.
  • White Magician Girl: Scarlett is a friendly and kind priestess of the Palevian Orthodoxy who specializes in healing and light magic. While her outfit is primarily red in color, it has white as a secondary color like the classical white magic image.

    Lex
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lex_3.png
Voiced By: Miyu Irino (JP), Stephen Fu (EN)
Class: Fighter → Vanguard
A childhood friend of Alain's, born on the island of Palevia to a local fisherman. After studying under Josef, he resolves to join the quest to liberate Fevrith.
  • Butt-Monkey: Acts before he thinks and has to be chastised by Chloe frequently.
  • Dumbass Has a Point:
    • Lex is generally not the sharpest sword in the armoury, especially in his interactions with Chloe who tends to be the voice of reason. But when she tells him he should treat Alain with more decorum, as not doing so may land him in trouble, Lex replies that Alain's already having to deal with so much change in his life, having to command an army and all that, that if his closest friend begins acting differently around him, that'd be far more upsetting, so it's better for Lex to not change anything. Chloe admits he's got a point.
    • Lex intuitively guesses that Scarlett is the daughter of Pontifex Arant by noticing how she and Alain has been behaving suspiciously ever since the Liberation Army first landed on Albion. At this point, only Alain knew about her relationship with the Pontifex since the day she was rescued. Realizing that he found out, Scarlett discloses her relationship with the Pontifex to the Liberation.
  • Fiery Redhead: Red haired and very eager to prove himself as a useful member of the Liberation Army.
  • Glorious Death: He wants nothing more or less than to die for Alain. Alain can talk him out of it by offering the Ring of the Maiden.
  • Hidden Depths: In his three-heart with Alain, he will explain his Newberry Award-winning backstory, in front of the grave of his beloved childhood dog.
  • Interclass Friendship: He's a son of a simple fisherman and the best friend of Alain, the crown prince of Cornia.
  • It Meant Something to Me: In the post-game, if he is chosen for the covenant. Unusually for the trope, he was the one laughing it off at first.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: He almost gets himself killed in the first skirmish with Zenoira, as he eagerly scouts ahead and tries to single-handedly fight the enemy to prove his worth. It gets him a firm scolding from Chloe, who agrees to Josef’s suggestion of sticking with Lex in order to keep a close eye and temper his impulsive rashness.
  • Lethal Chef: His cooking is infamously inedible, in particular his bread is a danger to one's teeth. Despite this he ponders opening a bakery after the war is over, due to him making one loaf out of ten attempts that actually turned out well.
  • Like Brother and Sister: With Chloe. Solidified in their three-heart rapport event, where they agree to not let their friendship change. When the ending rolls around, the two won't even end up in the same part of Fevrith unless Alain chooses Lex for the covenant.
  • Number Two: To Alain.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: An NPC will mention Lex jumped in a river to save someone from drowning. While in armor. And pulled it off.
  • Only Sane Man: In general, Lex has a few doses of common sense to make up for his lack of raw brainpower. He’s a bit exasperated by Alain's All-Loving Hero tendencies, most specifically when he offers to recruit Tatiana despite the morally-questionable things she was tangled up in.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Lex and Chloe have this dynamic. Lex is impulsive, emotional, and irreverent. Chloe is cool, collected, stoic, and follows court decorum. The two are also some of the few heroes to have in combat voice lines referencing one another when in the same squad (or even outside of it).
  • Walking the Earth: His normal ending has him leave Gran Corine to wander Fevrith.
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: His normal ending has him Walking the Earth as a roaming hero. It’s a generally happy ending for him as he regularly visits his friends.
  • Worth Living For: The terms of his ring covenant, if chosen, are to live by Alain's side, forever, instead of dying for him. Alain swears to fight in kind.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: According to Josef, and Alain in his covenant scene.

    Chloe
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chloe_42.png
Voiced By: Nao Tōyama (JP), Heather Gonzalez (EN)
Class: Soldier → Sergeant
Daughter of a friend of Josef. When she joined the Liberation Army, she became Josef's apprentice and studied martial arts and academics. While she maintains a courteous attitude toward Alain as her prince, she also counts herself as one of his good friends.
  • Anti-Cavalry: Chloe's polearm allows her to devastate not just front line cavalry, but any units taking cover directly behind the unit she attacks.
  • Babies Ever After: In the epilogue, if Chloe is chosen to receive the Ring of the Maiden, it is stated that she gives birth to "a beautiful girl - a princess who would be adored by all of Cornia's loyal citizens."
  • Chef of Iron: She's the Liberation army's main cook, and can kick as much ass as the rest of them.
  • Healer Signs On Early: Downplayed compared to Scarlett, since she also brings her longspear to bear, but she has a healing skill to patch up other members of her unit after combat. And unlike Scarlett, she sticks around after the first battle of the game.
  • Hopeless Suitor: How she sees herself. It's heavily implied in her Rapports with Alain and Scarlett that Chloe is in love with him, but feels she's unworthy of him and instead becomes Scarlett's Romantic Wingman.
  • I Am Not Pretty: A few of her Rapports mention she doesn't feel like she is very attractive when compared to others in the Liberation Army like Scarlett or Yahna, both of which argue that she is selling herself short.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Not believing herself worthy of Alain, she doesn’t pursue him and instead encourages Scarlett; she nonetheless serves at his side even if she’s not chosen. Alain giving her gifts makes her flustered, and if he does propose to Chloe she’s lost for words.
  • Jack of All Stats: Chloe's growths are the Guardian and Lucky, meaning her stats are fairly spread out and allow her to be solid at most things the Soldier class can do. The flipside is that she doesn't specialize in any particular stat beyond being decently accurate thanks to the combo of the two.
  • Like Brother and Sister: With Lex. Solidified in their three-heart rapport event, where they agree to not let their friendship change. When the ending rolls around, the two won't even end up in the same part of Fevrith unless Alain chooses Lex for the covenant.
  • Obliviously Beautiful: It's repeatedly suggested by her female friends that Chloe underestimates her own good looks and even sex appeal thanks to her neuroses.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Lex and Chloe have this dynamic. Lex is impulsive, emotional, and irreverent. Chloe is cool, collected, stoic, and follows court decorum. The two are also some of the few heroes to have in combat voice lines referencing one another when in the same squad.
  • Romantic Wingman: For Scarlett, towards Alain. In her three-heart rapport event with Alain, it's revealed to be because she feels she isn't worthy of pursuing him herself.
  • Spirited Young Lady: Chloe is much more obsessed with courtly decorum than Lex. She acts unfailingly polite and proper toward Alain in cutscenes while being a reliable fighter on the battlefield. Justified, as it's eventually revealed she's the daughter of a minor baron, and thus nobility.
  • Supreme Chef: Lex calls her the army's best chef. So much so he steals food when it’s her turn to cook. When Amalia upon recruitment warns them that she eats enough for five men, Chloe quips that she’s going to be even busier than before keeping everyone fed.
  • Tsundere: Mostly towards Lex. She's usually critical of him, but she blushes when he compliments her cooking or is otherwise pays attention towards her before rapidly pivoting back to being bossy.
  • Women Are Wiser: She often finds herself reining in the hot-headed Lex in and out of battle.

    Clive

Voiced By: Takuya Eguchi (JP), Alexander Gross (EN)
Class: Knight → Great Knight
A member of the Knights of the Ashen Blue. Knighted early in his career, he has been praised for his intelligence and bravery since he was a squire. He has used his talents to lay the groundwork for the Liberation Army as Josef's right-hand man.
  • Ascended Fanboy: As a child Clive looked up to Hodrick as a spear master. As a young man he now has the opportunity to fight alongside him.
  • Number Two: To Josef while they were starting up the Liberation Army. He also fills this role for Alain while traversing Cornia, helping clue in Alain as to the current situation, who some of the important figures are, and tends to appear in most cutscenes for levels taking place in Cornia.
  • Sole Survivor: Clive is the only survivor of his family, as when his father chose to stand against Galerius' take over, everyone in his family was executed in revenge for doing so, including his mother and sister.
  • Was It Really Worth It?: A few of his Rapports have him wondering if his choice to keep fighting Zenoria is worth it after having lost so much doing so, with characters like Josef supporting him and encouraging him to keep going.
  • Working with the Ex: Monica, his former fiancé whose family lost a lot of their land for his associations with the Liberation Army, can be recruited to the Liberation Army if her level is beaten. He'll apologize for how things turned out after the battle.

    Travis
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/travis_14.png
Voiced By: Daiki Yamashita (JP), Ben Balmaceda (EN)
Class: Thief → Rogue
A spy who works for the Cornian Liberation Army. He's been in this clandestine line of work for years with the Tricorn mercenary company, but when the Liberation Army is formed he joins the combat troops under Alain's command.
  • Blue Blood: He is actually the second child of Count Zechshelm, a noble from Drakenhold who died in the Zenorian invasion.
  • Badass Bookworm: Travis loves reading, likely thanks to his family's large collection. It has since been lost due to Zenoiran nastiness, but he hopes to rebuild it and indulge in it to his heart's content once the war is over.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Travis has a more prominent role in the Drakenhold storyline, due to his sister, Berengaria, being a major character in that region.
  • Fragile Speedster: Travis is likely to be the fastest unit the player has for a while, letting him attack first and dodge most attacks easily. His defenses are low however, so if the enemy is accurate enough to hit, or is an archer, he's likely to get almost one-shot without some defense measures to protect him. The game encourages using him as a front line dodge tank for this reason, as he can dodge most enemies easily.
  • Gay Option: Unlike most other male options for the Ring of the Maiden, Travis' interest in Alain is expressed even in other rapport skits, and he is noticeably disappointed should Alain decide against giving it to him after calling him out. If he is chosen, he has a very unambiguous confession scene during the final chapter, and will flirt openly in the Playable Epilogue.
  • Hidden Depths: His high literacy level and possessing a number of books (which became hard to obtain after Zenoira’s conquest) are early hints to his well-bred background.
  • Interclass Friendship: Despite his high education and status as a secret noble scion, Travis is very close with Bruno, a common mercenary.
  • The Smart Guy: Serves as the Liberation Army’s primary information broker and spy, and he’s also well-read and educated.
  • Super-Reflexes: Even though he has little defense, Travis makes an excellent first line shield character because of his ability to dodge multiple melee attacks per battle.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Has this relationship with Bruno.

    Hodrick

Class: Hoplite → Legionnaire
An old friend and comrade of Josef's and a retainer of Queen Ilenia, Hodrick stood beside her at the fall of Cornia to Galerius, buying time for Josef and Alain to escape to safety. After the Queen's downfall, he was forced to serve Galerius via dark magic until being defeated and saved by Alain and the Unicorn Ring.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Yahna calls him “little Hodrick”, even long after he’s grown to be not so small anymore.
  • The Atoner: While he’s not nearly as dramatic as his colleague Renault, Hodrick feels tremendous guilt for his part (however unwilling) in enforcing Zenoira’s oppressive reign on Fevrith.
  • The Big Guy: The only mandatory hoplite/legionnaire class character, Hodrick is one of the Liberation’s most experienced and dependable (and kindest) figures.
  • Blue Blood: He belongs to House Dupont, known for their spearmanship. According to Clive, his family have many techniques kept secret to their lineage, which Hodrick happily teaches him a few of his tricks.
  • Foil: To Gailey, as shown when they interact in the Elheim arc; both are spear-wielding infantrymen whose combat styles are team-based, and fought to the last against Valmore’s coup alongside Ilenia. While Hodrick is a frontliner who focuses on close-range and shields his allies, Gailey is a backline fighter who uses speed and long-range attacks. When Ilenia fell, Hodrick had to be brainwashed and was made into a blunt instrument of Zenoira, who was Alain’s first obstacle but would serve him and Cornia loyally henceforth; meanwhile Gailey defected out of self-preservation and became a callous, puppeteering general who was fought much later, and spurned any redemption out of spite because he cares nothing for Cornia without Ilenia.
  • Gentle Giant: He’s large, physically imposing and generally taciturn, but Hodrick is one of the most compassionate, supportive and caring men around. To the point he’s still haunted by the knowledge that for a decade his mighty body was used as a tool of Zenoiran oppression.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: With Alain who is decades his junior; he often took the time to play with the young prince before the invasion. He was on the opposite side of this with Yahna, back when she served at Gran Corinne.
  • Last Stand: Hodrick is present in Queen Ilenia's desperate defense against Galerius in the prologue.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: As a Hoplite, Hodrick has some of the highest armor stats of the game and his passive ability allows him to take hits for other soldiers, even though his spear attack is relatively weak.
  • Mighty Glacier: When promoted to Legionnaire; he’s still not fast and remains vulnerable to magick, but defensively he’s even stronger and hits harder than as a Hoplite.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After Alain uses the Unicorn Ring to dispel the magic controlling him, Hodrick realizes he has been serving Galerius, and is remorseful for having been forced to fight against not just his prince, but also innocent people.
  • Old Retainer: Downplayed as he's not as old as Josef, but was an adult when Alain was just a boy.
  • Overrated and Underleveled: In the prologue - level 41 Legionnaire. When recruited - level 2 Hoplite. Lampshaded in his first Rapport conversation with Josef, which explains this by injuries he sustained in the battle against Alain.
  • Starter Villain: He is the first boss you face in the opening scenario of the game. The fact that he once stood by Queen Ilenia in her last stand, only to now fight under Zenorian's banner alarms both Alain and Josef of his sudden shift in allegiance. This is to show how Galerius managed to control his thralls through magic, but also allow Alain to dispel said magic and free Hodrick from his control, gaining an ally.
  • Stone Wall: More or less, as a Hoplite; Hodrick’s initiative is poor, he’s vulnerable to magick and his physickal attack is solid yet unremarkable, but his physickal defence and ability to protect his allies makes him quite survivable.
