Needs Help (Real Life section crowner 19 Feb 2023): Make Me Wanna Shout

Go To

To-do list:

  • The trope refers to the use of super-powered screams as attacks. Remove any examples that don't fit that definition, or move them to Make Some Noise (this trope's supertrope) if they fit that trope instead.
    • Remove misuse from the on-page examples and subpages. Cut any subpages that end up becoming too short.
    • Move correct wicks to the new name and remove misuse

    Original post
The name of the trope seems to imply this is a superpower involving loud voices used for attacks. The opening description vaguely suggests that but states other powers (Ex. First sentence is "The power of sound.", states "Characters who have super-powerful screams or other sound-based superpowers...", Laconic description is "Sound-based Elemental Powers.") Did the Make Me Wanna Shout Wick Check and found that the largest use was Super Scream Attacks, which makes up 45.61%. However, the other categories combines make up 54.39%, so if Super Scream Attacks is the correct usage, then only about half of the wicks checked are correct.

Wick Check results

Super Scream Attacks: 52/114 or 45.61%

Generic Sound Powers: 16/114 or 14.04%

Just Loud Sounds: 3/114 or 2.63%

Sonic Energy: 5/114 or 4.39%

Just Loud Screams: 13/114 or 11.40%

ZCE: 25/114 or 21.93%

My Proposal: Make Me Wanna Shout should specifically refer to Superpowered Scream Attacks (or at least scream attacks). Any sound power that doesn't use the voice or is offensive should go to Make Some Noise, which I heard was created to be a supertrope to this one. After that the examples that do not involve voices should be moved to Make Some Noise.

Made six folders for how the tropes are described on the pages. (Used My Judgement)

Main description seems to be about scream attacks, but vaguely hints at other sound powers. (Ex. First sentence is "The power of sound.", a writing that states "Characters who have super-powerful screams or other sound-based superpowers...", Laconic description is "Sound-based Elemental Powers.") I think this trope should only cover sounds that come from voices. Other sound attacks should go on Make Some Noise.

Largest individual percentage are in fact super scream attacks making up 45.61%. The remaining wick categories combined make up 54.39%, the largest category of them being no context. I think the trope description should specifically be about super scream attacks (or at least attacks with using screams and voices) rather than just any loud sounds.

Super Scream Attacks are for super powered screams/shouts/roars/voices used for attacks.

Generic Sound Powers are just regular powers, should really be in Make Some Noise.

Just Loud Sounds are sounds that come from devices or something other than a voice, should also be in Make Some Noise.

Sonic Energy is sound formed into sonic energy rathe than screams, should be in Make Some Noise.

Just Loud Screams are for loud screams that are exaggerated in the story, portrayed as cartoonish and not really attacks.

No Context: Not enough context is given in the description, or assumes the reader is familiar with the work.

[up][up]I honestly thought that was the definition, Black Canary's cry and the thuum from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim being archetypical examples.

Maybe a rename might help clarify what the trope's supposed to be about? Super-Scream does sound more descriptive of the main idea than the current name (and easier to type to boot).

I imagine the lack of a "sonic attack" trope caused a lot of tropers to just default to using Make Me Wanna Shout for a long time. There are 10+ years of difference between both tropes.

Regardless, [tup] for the suggestion and rename. Superpowered Scream Attack on its own works, but we use variants like Super Scream Attack / Super-Scream / Superpowered Scream / Scream Attack / Super-Scream.

I agree with renaming to Super-Scream (or maybe Superpowered Scream). The current name being a dialogue-based title that doesn't clearly indicate that it's an ability-related trope doesn't help.

I also tagged the page.

Agree with the rename, but I'm not sure we need to yard the other sound based powers.

There's also Glass-Shattering Sound for sounds so loud they break glass.

We can move examples to these pages if they fit.

Also Sonic Scream is a redirect to Make Me Wanna Shout with 34 wicks on it. We could just make that the new name and move wicks accordingly.

In addition to what amathieu posted about how we probably don't need to Yard anything, I'm wondering if we should redirect the name Make Me Wanna Shout to Make Some Noise if we rename the former, instead of redirecting it to the new name.

Huh. I guess the misuse is due to the supertrope page Make Some Noise not existing for years. I assume Make Me Wanna Shout's misuse are all fairly old, but maybe we're past just doing cleanup. Sonic Scream "sounds" fine. As does Super-Scream, or any of the other proposed names.

It kind of sounds like Make Me Wanna Shout isn't completely clear about it being about using one's voice for attacks (particularly with the misleading Laconic), but since 52/114 wicks involving vocal attacks means renaming Make Me Wanna Shout and moving other examples elsewhere (or deleting them if there is no elsewhere to move them to) is doable, it sounds like we could rewrite Make Me Wanna Shout's description to clarify the distinction along with renaming it.

Edit: The TLP link wasn't there when I first posted this. The original draft makes it clear that vocal attacks were the intention and anything else came about due to a combination of Trope Decay and Missing Supertrope Syndrome, so I stand by what I originally said about clarifying the description and renaming.

Crown Description:

Since Make Me Wanna Shout (to be renamed to Super Scream) is focused on supernatural sound abilities, should the references to Real Life be removed from the description, the trope made NRLEP, and the real life page cut entirely? Similar treatment was given to other Elemental Powers tropes.

Vote up to forbid real life examples; vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add this trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:

  • 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
