To-do list:

    Original post
Note: This thread was proposed by badtothebaritone.

This was split off from the Acceptable Targets TRS thread, so I did a separate wick check for this one.

Unacceptable Targets is a YMMV item about some people, works, etc. being in a status where making fun of them is frowned upon and doing so anyway will result in major backlash. However, the majority of examples read as something along the lines of "you can't make fun of this, or else", which only covers the first half of the trope. This is probably because that the name only indicates that part. Additionally, there's a lot of overlapping tropes.

My suggested course of action is to disambiguate between these tropes and possibly others, though "make a trope for fictional cases where characters make fun of an unacceptable target with or without facing backlash its own trope" was also suggested.

This thread's wick check:

Something being made fun of sparks backlash (16/51)
  1. YMMV.True Capitalist - Unacceptable Targets: On the October 25th, 2016 broadcast, where Teutonic Plague commented that he would slit a dog's throat if it ever attacked him. The trolls got so upset by this that they signed a successful petition to sign him off the show. While the trolls have no problem making dark jokes to get a rise out of Ghost, they've clearly shown their contempt for anyone that would sincerely harm an animal.
  2. Urban Dictionary - Pet the Dog: With a combination of Everyone Has Standards, their definitions for the word "suicide" are surprisingly sensitive and anyone who tries to make an incendiary definition gets immediately downvoted.
  3. Recap.Disenchantment S 2 E 2 Stairway To Hell - Kicked Out of Heaven: After waking up in Heaven, Elfo receives a message from Bean and Luci that he needs to go to Hell so they can bring him back to life. Initially, Elfo asks God to cast him to Hell, but He refuses since Elfo is far too good of a person. Then he tries being rude enough to get kicked out, but God easily sees through it... at least until Elfo makes a passing rude comment towards a severely mentally handicapped man, which gets him immediately and brutally thrown to Hell. Although, the ending of the episode reveals that this was God's plan all along.
  4. YMMV.Evil Diva - Broken Base: This occurred when the comic first changed artist, tone, and timeline. Some accepted the new turn, others complained. The division widened when the main protagonist was teleported directly into the clutches of a compulsive rapist named Tommy. Apparently, some fans will turn on a comic when the writer repeatedly puts a naive little girl in sexual situations and finally has her assaulted by an older man. Who knew?
  5. YMMV.High School High - Unacceptable Targets: While the film doesn't treat actual inner-city schools or gangland drama with derision, it was still an irreverent take on a film genre that was so deeply rooted in reality (Roger Ebert referred to the film's premise as "kicking its subjects when they're down") that simply making fun of it comes off as insensitive regardless, not helped by the fact that one of its more unfortunate tropes is played with little to no irony.
  6. Recap. The Office USSWE 4 Blackmail - Unacceptable Targets: An in-universe example. Oscar was offended when footage spliced from Milk into a video made by Creed for extortion.
  7. WesternAnimation.Censored Eleven - These racially-themed cartoons are not officially associated with the Censored Eleven, however, and exist in a class by themselves. (Which Is Witch is part of a group of 12 Bugs Bunny cartoons, including the Censored Eleven's All This and Rabbit Stew, that were pulled by Cartoon Network due to Bugs facing off against a villain who happens to be an unacceptable racial target).
  8. YMMV.Clone High - Unacceptable Targets: The show's portrayal of Gandhi has caused an uproar from Indians.
  9. Funny.Yakuza 3 - In one substory, Kiryu jumps to the defense of a woman getting harassed by thugs. Once he gets rid of the thugs, Kiryu realizes the woman he saved was a drag queen, who now had the hots for him, much to Kiryu's horror. What comes next is a chase sequence where Kiryu tries to desperately get away from his new admirer. Understandably, this substory was cut from the Remastered version.
  10. Role-Ending Misdemeanor.Advertising - The original iteration of the long-running Sonic Drive-in commercials with a duo eating in a car and having Seinfeldian Conversations featured a male-female couple played by actors Brian Huskey and Molly Erdman. Then a viewer saw Huskey in an Onion News Network video featuring a Black Comedy story about making Iraq more accessible to handicapped soldiers, which the viewer deemed Dude, Not Funny! since he ran a veterans blog and considered those in the military and veterans to be Unacceptable Targets. He angrily contacted Sonic. Even though Huskey already had a long career doing sometimes-edgy comedy even before the Sonic spots, Sonic decided they didn't want any controversy whatsoever and dropped both Huskey and Erdman. Luckily for Huskey, he would find success soon after as a writer and actor on Childrens Hospital. Erdman has gained notice as the creator of the humor website Catalog Living.
  11. Characters.Heavy Object Legitimacy Kingdom Military - Unacceptable Targets: Without her knowledge, the idol's agency made claims she was more beautiful than Princess Stavia. This ran afoul of lèse-majesté laws and ruined everyone involved.
  12. Trivia.Final Destination - Distanced from Current Events: The 9/11 reference in Final Destination 3 (a picture of one of the towers covered by a shadow of a plane), which was considered tasteless and offensive by critics, is removed from the TV version of the film.
  13. Funny.Team Four Star Dragon Ball Xenoverse - At one point, Grant mentions "gobblin'" in reference to the noise Puddin makes when doing the Meteor Crash, and Kirran goes full Overprotective Dad on him.
    Lani: Happy Turkey Month!
Grant: We're gonna be gobblin' aaaallll month here a-
    Kirran: NO SHE'S NOT!
    Lani: How dare you insinuate!
  14. OvershadowedByControversy.Western Animation - While regarded as a Cult Classic in its native North America, Clone High is infamous for the massive backlash in India due to the show's portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi as a raging, sex-obsessed party animal. As Gandhi is a highly revered figure in India for helping them gain independence from British rule, many Indian viewers found this extremely disrespectful, and the protests that sparked helped contribute to the show's abrupt cancellation. It should be noted, however, that the Gandhi in the show isn't actually Gandhi; he's a clone who cracked under the pressure to live up to Gandhi because he's so well-revered.
  15. Analysis. Some Of My Best Friends Are X - As indicated above, it is strongly associated with attempts to justify no longer accepted biases and prejudices ("Some of my best friends are..." women/gay/members of ethnic minorities/etc.).
  16. Series.Cold Case - Phony Veteran: The victim's wife's boyfriend in "Honor", who pretended to be the victim while he was a POW. Fellow Vietnam vet Stillman gives a guy a Tranquil Fury Moment of Awesome by telling him "you lie about being a race car driver or a brain surgeon, but never a POW".

Work explicitly refuses to make fun of someone (7/51)
  1. YMMV.Vinesauce Miitopia - Unacceptable Targets: When the game automatically assigned a Satoru Iwata Mii to an NPC, Vinny changed the character to Batman because he felt that having Iwata in that role would be in poor taste due to his death two years prior to the game's release (alongside the fact that he would become a boss). For this same reason, he decided against using a David Bowie Mii for the Pop Star class because of his death in 2016.
  2. Characters.Vinesauce Miitopia - Iwata was replaced by Batman due to the real Iwata's death two years prior to the game's release leading Vinny and viewers to consider keeping him to be in poor taste. Nobody in Neksdor notices anything different, not even his wife.
  3. Trivia.Vinesauce Miitopia - What Could Have Been: Vinny made some light casting changes during the series, generally with Miis based on real-life people. The Prickly Husband NPC role was originally filled by a Satoru Iwata Mii; since Iwata is considered a huge Unacceptable Target after his death, Vinny exchanged the Mii for Batman at the start of the sixth stream. This is also why Mike Stoklasa was replaced with LumberJahn after a single stream, as Vinny wasn't comfortable with having a "local" online personality in his main party, even if he didn't mean any harm by it.note
  4. YMMV.Mindless Self Indulgence - Crosses the Line Twice: Their lyrics are filled with brutality, sexuality, obscenity, and especially in their earlier works, slurs. The songs describe taboo topics, turn everything up to eleven and exceed all kinds of tolerable limits. "Panty Shot," "Faggot" and "Backmaskwarning" are popular examples for this. However, they've made it perfectly clear that it is not just offensive for the sake of being offensive, the shock value is deliberately too over-the-top to be genuinely offensive and and they punch up more often than kick down (check out Jimmy's literal soapbox rant about how LGBTQ+ or neurologically impared actors are snubbed for awards given to cishetero/neurotypical actors playing them in movies and TV). The booklet of Frankenstein Girls is practically their manifesto.
  5. YMMV.The Music Man - Unacceptable Targets: Meredith Willson personally wrote in copies of the libretto for amateur productions not to treat the Iowans' small-town quaintness with derision because, to them, it's not supposed to be ironic.
  6. YMMV.Monty Pythons Life Of Brian - Unacceptable Targets: Despite not being particularly religious themselves, the Pythons quickly came to the conclusion that there was nothing particularly worthy of mocking about Jesus and his teachings.
  7. YMMV.The Scathing Atheist - Unacceptable Targets: All three hosts are feminists and will tend to defend marginalized groups like women or LGBT folks. Noah has stated that he "always punches up."

Something is unacceptable to make fun of, but there's no backlash (14/15)
  1. Civvie 11 - Schmuck Bait: Civvie: "Oh, that? Well, Cancer Mouse, that's a [rapid fire Sound-Effect Bleep]. Katie, bleep some of that out, people will get super butthurt if I start making fun of [bleep]. invoked
  2. Flame Warriors - Unacceptable Targets: Invoked. Ents are longstanding, venerated, and not very active anymore, but engaging them is sure to earn the enmity of a lot of other warriors.
  3. The Schetch Pad - Author Avatar: Finn, all the way down to the stump he has in place of a left forearm. Martin stated it himself so that people didn't get the wrong idea.
  4. UsefulNotes.Censorship Systems - After World War II and the Chinese Civil War, when the country was still under one-party Kuomintang authoritarian rule, media in Taiwan were strictly managed by the Taiwan Garrison Command and regulated by the Publication Control Act. Any media that the censors thought promoted left-wing ideology, reflected Communist propaganda, corroded popular sentiments or endangered the physical and mental health of youth, etc. were also banned in the country. Also, any references made to the former Taiwanese leader Chiang Kai-shek in an unflattering manner were a big deal over there back then. In an twist of irony, use of the Taiwanese language (including in media) was also outlawed there.
  5. TheNostalgiaCritic.Tropes H To N - Jackass Genie: In his Kazaam review, the Critic wishes that the movie never existed. This ends up with him bashing Citizen Kane, much to the audience's displeasure.
  6. YMMV.El Chavo Del Ocho - Values Dissonance: Don Ramón killing Doña Florinda's cat just for thinking it was eating his fishes (and La Chilindrina tried the same in the remake) and El Chavo accidentally killing Quico's cat just to avoid to crash into Professor in the streets (and showing no remorse or sadness for that). Considering the modern times pets (especially cats and dogs) became Unacceptable Targets (although in both of cases their actions are viewed as wrong during these episodes; the latter one even hinges upon El Chavo being brought to trial for running over the cat).
  7. JustForFun.Trope Names For A Band - This Is My Side: Hard rock that insults Unacceptable Targets. Fans defend them by saying that if you're getting offended, just don't listen to their music.
  8. YMMV.Bee Movie - Unacceptable Targets: Some viewers were annoyed with the gag of Winnie the Pooh getting tranquilized, feeling it was hitting too close to childhood.
  9. YMMV.The Black Parade - Harsher in Hindsight: "Dead!" is a hilarious and upbeat song with many a clever insult to someone soon to be dead... you remember that the album is about a terminally ill cancer patient.
  10. Analysis.Dude Not Funny - Unacceptable Targets, because they are treated as too sacred and sensitive of a topic.
  11. Music.Drake: Freestyle Version: Around a quarter of the mixtape So Far Gone is freestyles, using songs by Jay-Z ("Ignorant Shit"), Kanye West ("Say You Will"), Lykke Li ("Little Bit"), Santogold ("Unstoppable") and Peter Bjorn and John ("Let's Call It Off"). note
  12. YMMV.Yotsuba - Almost the Trope Namer, due to her being a 5-year-old that is adorable and innocent in nature. Even in the darkest depths of the Internet, Yotsuba Is Off Limits.
  13. YMMV.The Joy Of Painting
    1. Friendly Fandoms: With those of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, as despite the differing target demographics, both have a soothing and healing tone to them and both feature an All-Loving Hero now practically worshipped as a god.
    2. Unacceptable Targets: Mocking Bob Ross is a bad idea. Everyone loves him. This is the result of a Popularity Polynomial; he was acceptable to mock during the Nineties and gained his universal popularity after his death.
  14. NationalStereotypes.Asia - Since the 1920s the world knows at least one historically important Turk: Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of modern Turkey and also modernizer of its culture and society. He is still seen as a hero by the Turkish population and someone who should not be criticized at all.

     Uncertain (3/51)
  1. YMMV.Guillermo Del Toros Pinocchio - Woolseyism: The Latin American Spanish dub offers a quite bizarre example: Pinocchio's "Fatherland March"'s lyrics in this version are more offensive in this version, as, while the original English lyrics used PG language which you normally hear from a child, the Spanish version of the song used more vulgar words to describe Mussolini, including calling him "a shitting geezer"note  in Spanish. The bizarre part comes with the fact that this is the only part of the whole film that the Latin Spanish dub of the film resorts on using any kind of profanity. Moreover, Guillermo del Toro himself was the one who gave the OK of that version, being Mexican himself and the dub was done in Mexico, so it's very likely the Spanish lyrics were originally intended for the English version as well, considering that he isn't afraid on using vulgar language in many of his previous films, but considering Pinoccio being a child, it's very likely he didn't for the original version.note
  2. YMMV.Mike Lu And Og - Unacceptable Targets: Word of God said that during the making of "The Three Amigas", while the male writers were making up jokes about Lu losing Mike to Hermione, the female writers said to them that such a situation is serious for a girl.
  3. Trivia.Rick And Morty S 1 E 7 Raising Gazorpazorp - What Could Have Been: When the writers realized that Dan Anderson was in his late 80's, they started getting cold feet about making fun of a harmless old guy. An alternative was to use Foxtrot creator Bill Amend, but the show's legal department told them they couldn't because he lives in Missouri. Ultimately they just decided to go with their first pick.

     Complaining (2/51)
  1. YMMV.The Garbage Pail Kids Movie - Unacceptable Targets: One of the people in the "State Home For The Ugly" has "too disabled" on his cage. How the hell did that get through?
  2. Sitcom Arch-Nemesis - Eminem's running gag of making sick and deliberately poorly researched jokes about Christopher Reeve led to Reeve threatening to beat him up on numerous songs.

Something is not made fun of (3/15)
  1. FinalFantasy.Tropes E To H - Fantastic Racism: Final Fantasy XIII has this to some extent. Nearly the entire population of Cocoon have been raised in fear of invasion from the underworld of Gran Pulse. The depictions of Pulse as an uninhabitable and hostile wasteland are embedded into the minds of every Cocoon citizen, even though there isn't any proof of this, nor is anyone allowed to prove or disprove these claims. Being branded a Pulse l'Cie is the equivalent of a death sentence — for the Pulse l'Cie, and everyone else in their vicinity suspected to be one. No matter what the Pulse l'Cie's alignment or Focus is, they are immediately generalized as an enemy of Cocoon, and the likelihood is that the Sanctum will do everything in their power to kill them before the end of their Focus. On the other hand, being a Sanctum l'Cie is perfectly fine.
  2. YMMV.Tim Story - Unacceptable Targets: After the release of Josh Trank's Fantastic Four (2015), many people looked back at Story's films and prefer to say kind things of his work.
  3. FantasticRacism.Video Games: Final Fantasy XIII has this to some extent.

     ZCE (4/51)
  1. YMMV.Epic Rap Battles Of History - Unacceptable Targets:
    1. Mr. Rogers, as Mr. T found out the hard way from the internet.
    2. This was the reason the series was hesitant for a long time to use Steve Irwin.
  2. TriumphantExample.U - Unacceptable Targets: The deceased in general ~ Gundamforce
  3. YMMV.Chick Tracts - Unacceptable Targets: Catholicism and Judaism.
  4. YMMV.Paymoney Wubby - Unacceptable Targets: Uncle Kenroy.

     Other (2/51)
  1. Values Dissonance - Unacceptable Targets: People and other subjects that one should never, ever mock or criticize, unless they're willing to face massive public backlash (or even worse consequences) against them. Related trope
  2. Universally Beloved Leader: When the adoration is enforced by others, it's Unacceptable Targets. Related trope

Wick check from the Acceptable Targets thread:

Unacceptable Targets use check

Creator decides or acknowledges X is not okay to target

  1. Author Vocabulary Calendar: Eminem's habit of making celebrity Take Thats is, by Word of God, because he just disses anyone whose name rhymes with something funny. This eventually led to a running joke of Slim's beef with "Christopher Reeves", in which Slim often pleads with the furious audience that it's not his fault Christopher's name rhymes with everything.
  2. videogamedunkey: "Goldeneye fuckin' sucks." (Dunkey's subscriber count instantly drops from 2.8 million to 15)
  3. Final Destination: Distanced from Current Events: The 9/11 reference in Final Destination 3 (a picture of one of the towers covered by a shadow of a plane), which was considered tasteless and offensive by critics, is removed from the TV version of the film.
  4. Vinesauce Miitopia: What Could Have Been: Vinny made some light casting changes during the series, generally with Miis based on real-life people.
  5. Quinton Reviews: Discussed, but averted in "That Time the World Ended". Quinton mentions that there is a sad aspect to The Mystery of the Crystal Skullsnote  that makes dunking on these people almost not fun, but he ultimately decided that stuff like "is this Atlantis?" is ridiculous enough that he can laugh at them.
  6. Hare Brush: The establishing shot of the mental hospital Elmer is committed to ("The Fruitcake Sanitarium: It's Full of Nuts") was cut, as per ABC's Standard and Practices rule at the time that prevents the mention and mocking of mental illness.
  7. Hamilton: Reportedly, the reason why "The Adams Administration" is so short is because the original version took a shot at Abigail Adams, which the audience did not seem to appreciate. Apparently, as soon as Lin saw the audience's reaction to the joke, he knew the song had to go.
  8. Mike, Lu & Og: Word of God said that during the making of "The Three Amigas", while the male writers were making up jokes about Lu losing Mike to Hermione, the female writers said to them that such a situation is serious for a girl.
  9. Red Dead Redemption: It may not be intentional, but Native Americans in this game exist mostly as cannon fodder; Nastas, the only named native in the game, dies in his 3rd mission, and the final enemy faction consists entirely of them (admittedly, they were being manipulated by a white man). This may be why the natives are portrayed as Unacceptable Targets in the sequel.
  10. The Bob Newhart Show: Bob was originally a psychiatrist when the show was pitched but Newhart was uncomfortable with the idea, he didn't think it was right to make fun of the truly mentally ill. It was at his behest that Bob was changed to an outpatient psychologist helping otherwise ordinary people through their problemsnote .

Audience saying it's not okay to target X

  1. Acceptable Political Targets:
    • In fact it can also be said that every single president even before JFK gets some form of backlash by those critical of the American political system. This could be due to possible Values Dissonance on the worldviews of the early presidents on slavery, treatment of Native Americans and their support of Manifest Destiny and the Monroe Doctrine. Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, and Woodrow Wilson have been hit the hardest by this. Only Washington, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt are unanimously considered Unacceptable Targets.
    • Though he is still very much an acceptable target among liberals and progressives, as far as mainstream conservatives are concerned, Ronald Reagan is practically an Unacceptable Target.
  2. Freestyle Version: * Around a quarter of Drake's mixtape So Far Gone is freestyles, using songs by Jay-Z ("Ignorant Shit"), Kanye West ("Say You Will"), Lykke Li ("Little Bit"), Santogold ("Unstoppable") and Peter Bjorn and John ("Let's Call It Off").note
  3. So Unfunny, It's Funny: Elements of this have always been part of Eminem's schtick, ranging from totally undeserved insult comedy hurled at Unacceptable Targets that is so abusive that all you can do is laugh, to howler puns and double-entendres which he explains, to him just improvising knowingly lame songs in one of his arsenal of silly mystery accents.
  4. Emily Bett Rickards: * Sacred Cow: Make no mistake, Felicity Smoak is far and away the most hated character in the Arrowverse for many reasons, but her actress Emily Bett Rickards is firmly off limits. She is seen as an outright saint in real life - she has raised money for charitable causes dedicated to fighting auto-immune diseases, sponsored a scholarship worth upwards of $250,000 out of her own pocket, is very nice and personable to her fans, and did "tons of research" when she discovered Felicity would become paralyzed. If anything, she is the most pitied out of everyone involved with the show since she's had to watch her character's reputation go down the drain through no fault of her own. It's basically one of the rules of being an Arrowverse viewer: you are not to say anything bad about Emily under any circumstances.
  5. Professional Wrestling: Most Smart marks/smarks do not tolerate the negative comments to the following people as they are considered Unacceptable Targets, especially if it's minor like "I don't this person".:
  6. Western Animation J To R: It's big in China, it even comes to the terms of being untouchable, (though it has slightly more leeway with its parodies) as proven by Chinese video streaming website Billibilli's "Creative Treaty" that includes the rule that forbids mature videos that can attract young kids and peoples, it even includes the creepypasta version of Peppa Pig character as an example!
  7. Asia: Since the 1920s the world knows at least one historically important Turk: Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of modern Turkey and also modernizer of its culture and society. He is still seen as a hero by the Turkish population and someone who should not be criticized at all.
  8. Live-Action TV (Other): Fred Rogers, God of Completely Respected Figures and Those Who Cannot be Mocked (Mister Rogers) as a Demigod in the Hall of Positive Reaction (House of Popularity)
  9. Western Animation: * Clone High was met with mediocre reviews and low ratings when it premiered back in 2002 due to its serialized format, cheap animation style, and Audience-Alienating Premise (Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist clones of historical figures enact parodies of teen dramas). These, along with massive backlash in India against its portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi, led to the series being cancelled after a single season. In the years since, the show has come to be a Cult Classic that is now considered one of the best animated series of the 2000s due to having a quirky sense of humor with clever history-themed jokes and being a serialized series that was legitimately good at parodying high school dramas.
  10. Bee Movie: Some viewers were annoyed with the gag of Winnie the Pooh getting tranquilized, feeling it was hitting too close to childhood.
  11. Cards Against Humanity: The game was originally launched under the philosophy that there were none, but this stance has changed, as the creators have removed cards such as "Date Rape" and "Passable Transvestites" from newer sets (cards about Holocaust victims, among other topics, remain intact). Interestingly, the 19-year-old trans gentleman who protested the "Passable Transvestites" card has since recanted, saying that it was not okay for him to single out just transgender people as an Unacceptable Target, and he never meant for his post to go viral.
  12. Chernobyl Diaries: Many critics pointed out that using a real-life tragedy like the Chernobyl disaster as the basis for a trashy zombie flick was in very poor taste. The UK-based Chernobyl Children's Lifeline charity even outright called the film "disgusting".
  13. Clone High: The show's portrayal of Gandhi has caused an uproar from Indians.
  14. Derry Girls: He Really Can Act: Tommy Tiernan has developed haters in The New '10s for aspects of his routine that involved mocking people with Down Syndrome, remarks towards Jewish people and the Holocaust that were in very poor taste, a weak defense where he claimed "Irish people aren't racist; they're just having the craic" and from people who don't think his energetic style of comedy is funny. Here he plays the Only Sane Man to perfection, many finding his performance as Gerry funny.
  15. Etika:
    • Etika had become this as soon as he went missing. People who have made clown memes and treating his disappearance like it wasn't a big deal have been slaughtered by comments talking about how unfunny and mean-spirited their words are. And following his passing, those same people who made clown memes or just mocked Etika's passing were torched hard.
    • Next to the clown crowd are a segment of the K-Pop crowd (whether just trolls or legitimate), who have added Etika to their list of recently deceased celebrities to mock by saying they should have "stanned" certain K-Pop acts or that these celebrities never stood a chance against their favorite K-Pop stars, with most times it done deliberately by spamming the same repetitive clips of those same artists. Suffice to say, K-Pop fans and Etika fans are not on good terms because of it.
  16. High School High: While the film doesn't treat actual inner-city schools or gangland drama with derision, it was still an irreverent take on a film genre that was so deeply rooted in reality (Roger Ebert referred to the film's premise as "kicking its subjects when they're down") that simply making fun of it comes off as insensitive regardless, not helped by the fact that one of its more unfortunate tropes is played with little to no irony.
  17. In the Company of Men: A bet between two white-collar workers involving the emotional destruction of an innocent woman as Revenge by Proxy... and that woman is also deaf.
  18. Mister Rogers' Neighborhood: The Internet has some very raunchy places, but try to make fun of this man and the Hive Mind will eat you alive.
  19. My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: Fluttershy has been considered this both in-universe and out. With the latter, characters in the show who have slighted her will gain the wrath of the fanbase, most notably with Gilda in her debut episode, Fluttershy's pet Angel (Especially in the episode "Putting Your Hoof Down") and Pinkie Pie in the episode "Filli Vanilli".
  20. Ren And Stimpy AP C1x 02 Ren Seeks Help The fact that Ren is torturing innocent animals is enough to upset many viewers, especially since these scenes are Played for Laughs, albeit extremely dark laughs.
  21. Steamboat Willie: Mickey and Minnie's animal abuse drew ire from some viewers, who found animal abuse to be something that should never be played for humor.
  22. The Blockbuster Buster: One likely reason for the particularly strong backlash against his Into the Woods review was that you cannot complain about Stephen Sondheim songs as lightly and uncritically as he did.
  23. The King Amuses Himself: This play's Historical Villain Upgrade of King François I of France is what led the play to be banned after a single performance. In Verdi's own adaptation, the King was demoted to an Italian provincial duke, a far more Acceptable Target at the time.
  24. The Walking Dead (2010): Laurie Holden. Andrea gets a lot of flak from the fandom, but her actress from all appearances is off-limits. Unlike with Sarah Wayne Callies and Josh McDermitt, fans never displaced any of their hate for Andrea onto Laurie Holden. It's common knowledge that she was contracted for seven seasons and had no intention to leave the show. If anything, a lot of people view her as a victim of bad screenwriting, and still praise her for trying to play Andrea as honestly as possible.
  25. Wadanohara: Notice how this game is devoid of Rule 34? While its obscurity has some part in it, it's the fact that Wadanohara is implied to be a rape victim that makes fans very uncomfortable with the idea of sexualizing the character or the game. This trope was made clear when Mogeko drew a NSFW picture of Wadanohara and Sal; it incited a backlash and damaged the relationship between Mogeko and their fans.
  26. Yotsuba&!: Unacceptable Targets: Almost the Trope Namer, due to her being a 5-year-old that is adorable and innocent in nature. Even in the darkest depths of the Internet, Yotsuba Is Off Limits.

Other uses, unclear

  1. Creativity Leash: index
  2. Never Speak Ill of the Dead: See also
  3. Universally Beloved Leader: Contrast 0% Approval Rating. An adventurer (not a ruler) treated this way has a 100% Heroism Rating. When the adoration is enforced by others, it's Unacceptable Targets.
  4. Dorkly Originals: He even manages to stop the Hulk, who doesn't use metal whatsoever, by daring him to attack an elderly Holocaust survivor.
  5. Better Call Saul: Other Characters: In-Universe. Bauer attempts to use his status as a serviceman to try and intimidate Jimmy into showing some respect and taking his order to pull the commercial. It doesn't work on Jimmy, who is utterly unfazed by his empty threats and then dismisses him from the office with a patently insincere "Thank you for your service!"
  6. Unwind: In-Universe. Grace is "low-cortical" (intellectually disabled) and apparently parts pirates won't unwind people like her.
  7. Joker Game: He Who Must Not Be Seen: It's very obvious that the portraits were Emperor Hirohito. But his face wasn't shown because it's taboo to have him and his family portrayed in Japanese media unless it's for historical, educational, or informative purposes.
  8. The Office USSWE 4 Blackmail: An in-universe example. Oscar was offended when footage spliced from Milk into a video made by Creed for extortion.
  9. Advertising: The original iteration of the long-running Sonic Drive-in commercials with a duo eating in a car and having Seinfeldian Conversations featured a male-female couple played by actors Brian Huskey and Molly Erdman.
  10. Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction: * Every Episode Ending: Jonathan Frakes always delivered a pun at the end of every story with a grin, which always related to the story's theme or subject matter. The only time he didn't do this was in the case of a woman and her daughter being reunited with the woman's long-lost mother, a Holocaust survivor.
    • Speculative, could be in the "Creator decides/acknowledges" section
  11. Ziwe: Extreme Doormat: A huge point of the humor. Pretty much all of the Iconic Guests would easily No-Sell Ziwe's boorish behavior and attempts to race bait them if they were willing to stand up to her and argue back like a normal person would. But they're celebrities, this is a talk show, and Ziwe is a black woman, so instead they just let her walk all over them.
  12. ThanksKilling: "Oh please, Ali. Your legs are harder to shut than the JonBenet Ramsey case." The others react like it's the greatest joke ever.
  13. The Iron Teeth: Herad is against killing women and children.
    • misuse
  14. Zelda's Honor: Its debatable if the exploitation of the Kokiri was a necessary evil for the villains to proceed with their plans. Some of the abuse on them can be quite shocking.

Paging ~badtothebaritone to the thread. Anyway, I'll wait for more feedback before saying anything myself.

Edit: Well, I found the original wick check from the Acceptable Targets thread. Pretty sure Tabs did that one.

I could see this being a disambiguation.

I'm leaning toward disambiguating as well, or maybe turning it into an index for tropes and Audience Reactions about targets that are considered unacceptable, similarly to how we turned Acceptable Targets into an index.

I was wondering if this would work as an index. [tup] to that for now, unless a convincing argument is made otherwise.

After thinking about it a bit more, I think I've changed my mind on disambiguating and would prefer turning it into an index if we turn it into a list of tropes, between Acceptable Targets already getting that treatment and the fact that I'm not sure if we already have an index for the opposite of Acceptable Targets. (I feel like I might have brought up turning this into an index in Acceptable Targets' thread, but I'm not positive.)

[tup] on turning it into an index. Going over it now, it's pretty fucking weird reading over some of the real-life people listed, especially with some of the more recent criticisms and reappraisals of figures like Gandhi and Mother Teresa.

Calling in favor of turning this into an index for tropes about targets that are considered off-limits, such as Sacred Cow, He Panned It, Now He Sucks!, Dude, Not Funny!, and other tropes, similarly to how Acceptable Targets was turned into an index for targets that aren't considered off-limits.

Any pages to list other than those three?

[up]That might work. Since this is becoming an index and not a supertrope, what's listed doesn't always have to involve unacceptable targets, but I can see how Humor Dissonance could depending on the target of the joke (such as if the joke in the work is about someone or something audiences think shouldn't be joked about).

Finally got around to turning the page into an index. It's not that long right now, but feel free to add more.

220 wicks to remove, which isn't much.

Edit: Dewicked the Unacceptable Target redirect and cut it, and now we're down to an even 200.

Trope Repair Shop: Unacceptable Targets
14th Apr '23 12:01:43 AM

Crown Description:

Unacceptable Targets is a YMMV item about some people, works, etc. being in a status where making fun of them is frowned upon and doing so anyway will result in major backlash. However, the majority of examples read as something along the lines of "you can't make fun of this, or else", which only covers the first half of the trope. This is probably because that the name only indicates that part. Additionally, there's a lot of overlapping tropes. What should be done with Unacceptable Targets?
