    In General
  • The Alliance: The human continent of Azesion functions as one, as the various humans kingdoms and nations formed one unified front against the demons during the Mythical Age, while maintaining their independence from each other, as they were able to work together for humanity's survival. This is contrast to the demons, who even in the midst of their battle against the humans, fought against each other for supremacy and to become the leader of Dilhade.
  • All Your Powers Combined: Their key advantage is the human spell, Asura, which allows armies and even regular citizens to concentrate their power into a single hero, giving them incredible offensive capability. It was designed primarily to counter the demon spell, Gyze, which instead shares the caster's power with their subordinates for defensive purposes. This was designed to work in conjunction with Aske, with would further strengthen the caster by infusing them with magic power generated from the hopes and desires of the people who believed in them. This allowed humans, who were originally magically inferior to demons to fight them on par.
  • Dying Race: According to Anos, humanity was in actual danger from going extinct due to the vast loss of human life during the Great War. Fortunately, humans were able to repopulate after the Great War ended, with their population far surpassing the population number from the Mythical Age.
  • Fantastic Racism: Humans despise demons, as they continuously fought each other during the Mythical Age. It would be easier to list the number of humans that weren't prejudiced against demons during the Mythical Age. However, this is notably averted during the Magical Age, as the lack of contact between the two races lessened the hatred to a great degree.
  • Humans Are Flawed: Despite most humans seeing themselves a benevolent race fighting against the Always Chaotic Evil demons, it was show that humans could be just as vile as they claimed that demons were, as showcased by Jerga's genocidal desire to exterminate demons even after the Great War ended. When Anos asserts to Hero Kanon that humans will begin fighting each other after purging the other races, Kanon doesn't dispute that humanity is faultless but he states his hope in their better nature.
  • Muggle Power: Even civilian humans who couldn't fight, contributed to the war effort via supplying their prayers and hopes to their warriors via Aske in order to strengthen them.
  • Super-Soldier: Heroes were this for humans, as they were far stronger and adept magic then regular human soldiers, as well as having the ability to wield holy swords.
  • We Are as Mayflies: Humans have the shortest life-span among the races of the world, as demons are Long-Lived, while spirits and gods are immortal and do not age at all. However, humans who are talented at Source Magic, can avert this to a degree, with them being able to reincarnate and live again in a new life. The most talented users can even transfer all of their memories and powers into their new vessel.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Barring exceptions such as the Heroes, most of humanity was physically and magically inferior to the demons, as the average demon possessed greater magic power then the average human. However, despite this, humanity was able to fight against the demon through a mix of subterfuge, greater numbers, and few unique spells such as Asura and Aske.

The Mythical Age

    Kanon

Hero Kanon

Hero of Legend

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hero_kanon.png

"It’s true. Humans do have their faults, but I want to believe in mankind. I want to believe in the kindness of humanity."

Voiced by: Ryōta Ōsaka (Japanese), Zach Aguilar (English)

The champion of humanity and their allies, Kanon was their ultimate weapon against the demons for his ability to wield his sacred blade, Evansmana, and his seven Sources, all but guaranteeing he would always revive and continue to fight.

  • All-Loving Hero: Despite Jerga indoctrinating him to hate demons, Kanon cares more about protecting people than seeking revenge on demons, which is why he's able to overcome his prejudices and make peace with Anos.
  • Always Someone Better:
    • Despite his mastery of magic, Anos himself admits that Kanon surpasses him in terms of Source magic, as he was noted to be most skilled user of it known in existence. Kanon was noted to retain all of his memories upon his repeated reincarnations and was able to inherit all of his previous abilities despite his reincarnated pureblood demon body not possessing a drop of his old blood.
    • He considers Shin Reglia to be this to him in terms of pure swordsmanship, despite the fact that Kanon had beaten him in a duel.
  • Broken Pedestal: A rare mutual one. After Jerga revealed his plans to continue the war until he fully killed Anos and destroyed the demons, Kanon pleaded with him to stop for the sake of those who would suffer due to the war. Jerga interpreted his objections as a betrayal and ordered his subordinates to kill him. After reviving and seeing what his mentor's actions would bring, Kanon lost faith in him and humans, opting to work with the demons to preserve the peace the Anos created.
  • Celibate Hero: Due to his duties as a Hero, Kanon didn't have much time for himself, let alone for romantic relationships. This actually factored into his skillset, as he couldn't use Teo Aske due to lacking a significant other to love, despite his own great mastery of magic.
  • The Chosen One: For humanity and their allies, largely due to his being able to wield his divine sword.
  • Death by Despair: Subverted. Eleonor believes he stopped reincarnating because of the despair of being killed by his own people, which is why no human in Azesion is his reincarnation. In reality, he chose to reincarnate exclusively as a demon because the demon leadership was more willing to listen to reason.
  • Determinator: Anos notes that damage to one's Source is so painful it's basically a Fate Worse than Death. Yet Kanon never gave up no matter how many times Anos destroyed his Sources.
  • From a Single Cell: Due to having Seven Sources, it's extremely difficult to kill him and keep him down for very long.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Anos had remarked that the peace that he created was possible because Kanon taught him the beauty of humanity and unintentionally convinced him that it was possible to end the Great War on peaceful terms. If not for Kanon's existence, it would be likely that Anos would have determined that peace was impossible and wiped out humanity.
  • The Hero: Kanon is the most widely known and renowned Hero in existence, as well as stated to be the most powerful among all Heroes.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: His weapon is the holy sword Evansmana, the Sword of Three Races, forged as a collaborative effort between the three races to slay the Demon King of Tyranny. It is considered the most powerful holy sword in existence, as it is one of the few things that could kill Anos permanently. It also possesses the unique power of being able to sever fate, which can be used in various ways.
  • Hope Bringer: Anos mentioned that Kanon had great charisma, which was able to rally and unify the thoughts of Humans and get them to believe in him wholeheartedly. This in turn fueled his power due to his skill and mastery over the Aske magic.
  • Humans Are Bastards: He comes to this conclusion when his own teacher, Jerga, murdered him in cold-blood for refusing to continue fighting the demon realm. While he doesn't develop a grudge or hatred for humanity, he does comes to the conclusion that he cannot expect humanity to try and strive for a peaceful coexistence with demons, which motivated him to reincarnate into a demon instead.
  • Ideal Hero: Kanon was considered the prime example of what a hero should be, as he was renowned for his strength, courage, and compassion. He showcased the ability to inspire others, was merciful to his enemies and was even respected by them in turn. Anos himself holds Kanon in the highest regard, as any attempt to besmirch his reputation is one of Anos' Berserk Buttons.
  • I'm Having Soul Pains: He has had his Sources destroyed and regenerated time and again, which Anos describes is far more painful than just a normal death.
  • It Sucks to Be the Chosen One: He may be an genuine All-Loving Hero who is chosen to save humanity and give them hope, but he eventually realized that he has no hope of his own and that his suffering will never end as long as the war goes on. He eventually finds hope when Anos proposes a way to end the conflict.
  • Logical Weakness: Despite his seven sources making him borderline un-killable in straight combat, there were ways to work around that advantage:
    • His advantage of having multiple sources could be nullified by magic spells and items that could directly affect sources and destroy them. However, given the high-level magic knowledge required to use such spells or the rarity of said items, the chances of encountering opponents with those capabilities would be limited to the highest tier of opponents. Unfortunately for him, Anos had the capability to destroy his sources via Vebdoz.
    • Just because he couldn't be killed, didn't mean that he couldn't be disabled in combat by other means such as sealing.
  • Magic Knight: While mostly known for his incredible swordsman skills, it is mentioned that Kanon is a master of magic, specializing in Holy Magic and Source Magic, as he was stated to be most skilled user of the latter in the world.
  • Man of Kryptonite: As the wielder of the legendary holy sword Evansmana, Kanon is one of the few characters that possesses the capability of permanently killing the Demon King Anos, as the sword was forged with the intent of slaying him. However, it is Played With, as while Kanon does have the capability of destroying Anos, the general power disparity between them makes that a highly difficult endeavour.
  • Master Swordsman: He's incredibly skilled with the sword, as he is considered humanity's greatest swordsman. His skill is such that he even managed to defeat Shin Reglia, who is considered demonkind's greatest swordsman and possibly the strongest swordsman in the world.
  • Only the Chosen May Wield: It is noted that Kanon's holy sword: Evansmana, can only be wielded by those that possess a cloudless and light-filled source, such as Kanon himself due to the sword itself choosing him as its wielder.
  • The Promise: His desire to keep his promise to Anos to be friends in 2,000 years was so strong, that even after his untimely death he continuously reincarnated as demons having a closer and closer involvement with the demon capital, eventually being born as the pure-blooded demon Lay, all so he could keep his promise to Anos.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: He was the leader of the Demon King Subjugation Army, as well as its most powerful member. It also invokes Asskicking Leads to Leadership, as he was ultimately selected for the position due to his ability to wield Evansmana.
  • Reluctant Warrior: Despite being humanity's greatest warrior and hero, Kanon disliked fighting and only fought to protect others, as others instilled the fact that many people will die if he didn't fought. Anos also noted that he tended to spare any demons who surrendered and showed them mercy.
  • Resurrective Immortality: Due to his seven Sources, even if Kanon's body would be fully destroyed, he could resurrect himself from just his sources. According to Anos, even he couldn't kill Kanon permanently, so Anos becomes sceptical when he hears that Kanon died at the hands of a human...
  • The Rival:
    • He is Anos' greatest enemy from the Mythical Age, and yet not the one driving the humans, spirits or gods to war with the demons. And indeed, when Anos says he wants to sacrifice himself to separate the realms and end the war, Kanon readily agrees to help and promises that if the two both reincarnate in 2,000 years, it'll be as friends.
    • To Shin Reglia, Anos' Dragon, as Kanon was the only person to ever defeat him in a swordsmanship duel.
  • Soul Power: Anos states that Kanon surpasses him in using Source magic. His skill with Source magic allows him to control how he'll reincarnate, which is how he reincarnated as Lay, a pure-blooded demon who can use holy swords.
  • Surpassed the Teacher: After joining the human armies in the war against the demons, he was initially weaker then his mentor Jerga. However, after training and experiencing numerous battles, he became far stronger then him, as he was the only human warrior capable of facing Anos in open combat.
  • Worthy Opponent: He is considered by demons to be this, as most of them respected his power and valour. This was especially notable in Anos, who considered Kanon the greatest hero, and Shin Reglia, who considered him one of the few people that could rival him with a sword.

    Jerga (Massive Unmarked Spoilers

Commander Jerga

Voiced by: Akio Ōtsuka (Japanese), John Snyder (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wounded_jerga.png
Jerga as a human
Click here to see Jerga as Holy Magic

Leader of the armies of humanity during the mythical age and the mentor of Kanon. He has a deep hatred for all demons after a group of demons killed his wife and daughter.

  • Abstract Apotheosis: He becomes the magic known as Demon Judgement Jerga, a spell designed solely to kill demons. He states that even if the current iteration of the spell were to be stopped by killing all humans in Azeshion, he could be cast again someday due to being part of the world's order. Evansmana is the only weapon that can remove him from the world's order.
  • Arc Villain: From the Hero Academy arc ( 3rd volume of the light novel and episodes 9-13 of the anime). Though he remains dormant for most of the arc, his influence on the students of the Hero Academy and Diego causes most of the problem of the arc, and he's eventually brought back during the climax to have one last battle with Anos and Lay.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Despite literally everything he did, he did it due to having lost his wife and daughter, and was so consumed by hate that he became Jerga. After Anos and Lay defeat Jerga, Anos decides to reincarnate him in the hopes that he'll be reunited with his wife and daughter.
  • Ax-Crazy: He is hellbent on killing every last demon, especially Anos. He fused part of his own Source into Aske to ensure that anyone who uses the spell would be brainwashed by his feelings of hatred, turning them just as murderously insane. Those under the effect of the spell will hear him repeatedly ranting about killing the demons and their leader. When he resurfaces as the spell Demon Judgement Jerga, he's so crazy that he wants to sacrifice his own people just to kill Anos.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: When Anos and Lay defeat his magic form, Jerga's last thoughts are revealed to be reminiscence of his wife and daughter.
  • Evil Mentor: He was the mentor of the hero Kanon, who constantly encouraged him to exterminate the demon race. He similarly orders Kanon's death after Kanon stands against his attempt to implement The Power of Hate taboo magic and Child Soldier hero academy to carry out his Revenge Before Reason ideals.
  • Freudian Excuse: Despises Anos and demons in general because demons killed his wife and daughter.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: When Jerga says he wants to kill all demons because demons killed his wife and daughter, Anos retorts that despite his desire to end the war, humans killed his mother.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Once Anos and Lay finally defeat him as Jerga, Anos returns the shell necklace he lost before he died, which gives him the chance of seeing his wife and daughter again in his next life, to which he smiles in content at finally being able to let go of his hatred and pass on.
  • Light Is Not Good: As a demon-slaying magic, he is considered holy and cannot be stopped by Kanon's Evansmana. He loses his holiness when Anos summons his castle and sword, allowing Evansmana to work on him.
  • Motive Decay: As the spell Demon Judgement Jerga, he wants nothing more than to destroy the demons for fighting against humanity... even if he needs to kill humanity to do so. Justified, as the spell contains all of his hatred, but none of his empathy or basically anything that made him human.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Despite claiming that Anos and the demons have to be killed for humanity's safety, he's willing to use Aske to drain the hopes of all the humans of Azeshion, resulting in their deaths. All he really cares about is satisfying his own personal grudge. This is because as the magic, Demon Judgement '''Jerga''', he inherited his human self's hatred while the more altruistic qualities went to Eleonore.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: After becoming the taboo magic Demon Judgement Jerga he wants to kill every demon in existence, even if it means sacrificing every human as well to do so.
  • One-Winged Angel: As the spell Jerga, he takes the form of a giant of light, and is powerful enough to force Anos to use his Source revival trick.
  • The Power of Hate: He really, really, really hates demons in general and the Demon King in particular. Before dying, he uses magic to imbue the spell Aske with part of his soul, forever tainting the spell with his hatred to the point that anyone who uses it starts Hearing Voices compelling them to hate and kill demons. Even the members of Anos's fan club, themselves demons, momentarily hear these hateful whispers after using Aske to share their power with Anos. In the finale of the Hero Academy arc, all of this hatred is given form as the spell Demon Judgement Jerga: a colossal, godlike magical projection whose sole goal is to exterminate all demons from the world, even if it's at the cost of those the real Jerga once sought to protect. To sum that up, his grudge was so powerful that it continued to live and grow on its own for 2000 years after its bearer's death, overshadowing everything else he may once have stood for. Now that is a lot of hate.
  • Saying Too Much: In the web and light novel, he displays knowledge about Anos' sword, Venuzdonoa, which Anos states he shouldn't have been able to learn. This hints that Jerga may have collaborated with someone outside of Azeshion.
  • Tautological Templar: He still thinks he's the righteous hero who's going to slay the demon lord, even as he plans on sacrificing all the humans in Azeshion to power himself up. He blames Anos for being responsible for his grudge and therefore "forcing" him to make these sacrifices in the first place. To him, any action performed to kill demons is good while anyone who opposes him, including Kanon, is evil.
  • Van Helsing Hate Crimes: Demons in this world have no particular inclination towards evil, and can be good or evil just as easily as humans. However, Jerga treats demons as Always Chaotic Evil and wants nothing more than to see them all obliterated.
  • Walking Spoiler: Is difficult to talk about him without mentioning he's the one who killed Kanon and established the Hero Academy as a plan to eradicate all demons, being as well responsible for the existence of Eleanore.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Casually orders all 10,000 Zeshias to self-destruct. Thankfully, Anos and co. were able to save all of them. There's also the part where he murdered his own student, Kanon, two thousand years ago just because he refused to cooperate with his genocidal plot.

Jerga Kanon Class

    In General

Jerga Kanon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jerga_kanon_ready_for_battle.png

The elite class of the Hero Academy, composed of various reincarnations from the Hero Kanon's seven Sources. They're named in honor of him and his mentor, Commander Jerga. In actuality, however, they are a part of a vast conspiracy by Commander Jerga.

  • Berserk Button: An easy way to piss them off is to imply that they aren't Kanon's reincarnations. Anos habitually presses it, which causes Raos to attack him.
  • Break the Haughty: What most of them suffered during the interschool training trip.
  • Blood Knight: They have shown to enjoy fighting, as seen when they defeated Revest's team. Even seeing Anos evaporate the lake they were fighting in wasn't enough to deter them, as they jumped at the chance to fight him, despite seeing his power up close.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • After the Dilhade/Azesion war and the revelation of Diego's crimes, the Hero Academy and Jerga Kanon lost the trust of the public due to being outed as fakes that were posing as Kanon's reincarnations. But unlike most versions, this has far reaching plot implications as the Heroes cannot use Aske properly if they cannot rally the populace to believe in them due to Aske needing the genuine trust of the people to strengthen themselves in battle. This is later subverted and becomes a Rebuild Pedestal after the human civilians witness Emillia and the students of the Hero Academy selflessly risking their lives to protect Azesion from the invading dragons.
    • A interesting case with how the members of Jerga Kanon who were said to be Kanon's reincarnations view Kanon after the revelation that they weren't his reincarnations and that Lay was the true reincarnation of Kanon. At first, they were aloof and angry at the Hero Academy higher-ups for deceiving them about being Kanon's reincarnations and some like Heine were wary of Lay due to how he beat him during the last academy exchange. But after Jerga Kanon repels the dragons invading Azesion, Lay acknowledges them as true heroes and gives them his blessing while they regain their admiration for him.
  • Child Soldiers: While both school practice military drills and training, Gairadite was genuinely readying their students for war against their demon neighbors.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: During the inter-academy team battle, they cheat by infusing the lake they are fighting in with Holy Water, which supplies humans with magic power while being poisonous to demons. While it did work against Revest and his team, Anos promptly eliminates their cheating advantage by evaporating the lake.
  • Elemental Powers: Each of the main Jerga Kanon heroes has a unique affinity with a certain element:
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: None of them have Kanon's Sources. Instead, they're reincarnated individuals who were lead to believe that they are Kanon's reincarnations or being an Artificial Human in Zeshia's case.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Fittingly for a class that is supposedly the reincarnations of a legendary swordsman, they all wield holy swords as their weapons of choice.
  • Hero-Worshipper: They greatly revere the original Kanon, as they consider themselves his descendants and successors.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Despite their haughty nature, they have acknowledged his power and after seeing his magic knowledge, have acknowledged him as the reincarnation of the Demon King of Tyranny. This is in contrast to the Royalist students, who are always dismissive of Anos' claim of being the Demon King of Tyranny, no matter what impossible feat he accomplishes.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: What they become after their character development, as while they can still be a bit aloof and hard-headed, they act far more like the heroes they were supposed to be. A far cry from their initial introduction where they were behaving like villains.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Played With. While the main heroes of Jerga Kanon are implied to be powerful by Magical Age standards, they are shown to be far weaker then the likes of Mythical Age characters, especially Anos and his team.
  • The Power of Hate: What actually powers the spell Aske and empowers them. Jerga's hatred for demonkind hidden within the spell fuel their need to humiliate and kill any demon they come across.
  • Quantity vs. Quality: Ledriano and Zeshia, who were empowered by the 10 million prayers of the people of Gairadite via Aske were still soundly beaten by Anos, who was similarly empowered by his 8 fans through Aske. Anos revealed that the reason they lost was due to the fact that the Hero class received shallow and empty feelings through their Aske connection to the people of Gairadite, unlike Kanon and himself, who were able to receive the genuine feelings of love, hope, and support through the people in their connections.
  • Reformed, but Not Tamed: Following Anos & Co. beating them and excising the hatred Jerga implanted in them towards demonkind, they genuinely come around to supporting Anos' and Eleonore's efforts for peace between the races, but at their best they're still abrasive and condescending cases of Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
  • Tautological Templar: The Jerga Kanon class like to talk a big game about how holy and righteous they are, even as they blatantly cheat during every single competition in the interschool training event in order to humiliate the demon academy students. And that's not even getting into how their true objectives are murderous in the short term and outright genocidal in the long term.
  • Tragic Bigot: Some of them like Diego and Zeshia were created with an inherent hatred for demonkind in their hearts without a say in the matter, while the students were indoctrinated by the Hero Academy higher-ups like Diego. While most of them relish in their sadism now, it's unknown how they would have turned out if their hearts weren't tainted with Jerga's hatred, as the continuous usage of Aske really didn't help their mental health.
  • Underestimating Badassery: They greatly underestimate Anos and his companions, and end up being curb-stomped by them during the inter-academy exam.
  • Unwitting Pawn: At the end, they are little more than Jerga's puppets in his campaign to wipe out demonkind from the face of the planet, eventually being overtaken by him due overusing the Aske spell (though Anos manages to save them at the end).
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Despite all the horrible things they do during the interschool training event, the people of Gairadite were ALL still willing to cheer them on and lend them their power through Aske. Jerga's corruptive influence within Aske might have had something to do with that, alongside the human population's bigotry.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about ANY of them without revealing the vast conspiracy that surrounds them.

    Diego Kanon Ijeiska

Diego Kanon Ijeiska

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/diego_6.jpg
Voiced by: Mitsuru Miyamoto (Japanese), Kyle Hebert (English)

The director of the academy.

  • 0% Approval Rating: He orders his soldiers to attack the retreating demon army from behind and cuts the arm off a soldier who questions his order. This causes many of his soldiers to start doubting him, especially when he's ordering them to attack Lay, who many of them acknowledge as Kanon reborn. When Diego claims that he's the real Kanon, Lay dares him to wield Evansmana, which rejects him and proves he's not really Kanon. This is the final straw that convinces all his soldiers to abandon him.
  • And Show It to You: Anos pulls out his soul instead of his heart but the trope is otherwise the same.
  • Antagonistic Offspring: Despite being created by Eleonore, he holds her in contempt for failing to inherit Jerga's personality and treats her as a tool.
  • Artificial Human: He is a source clone created by Eleonore, who in turn was created from Jerga's original source.
  • Asshole Victim: Giving the first Diego was a condescending jerk that cheated in the exam between the two academies and later brutally stabbed Misha while planning to sacrifice all his students to kill Anos' class, his end was well-earned, even if it was gruesome.
  • Bad Boss: He tries to have all his students self-destruct in order to kill the demons. Anos calls him out on the hypocrisy and complete lack of knowledge of who Kanon was, as Kanon gladly suffered and died time and again if it meant he could avoid sacrificing others.
  • Body Horror: After being demonized, Diego's right arm is malformed, the skin being ripped apart by the muscle tissue underneath.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: The first Diego gets stabbed by Anos, then turned into a grotesque monster, then has his Source extracted from his body (which Anos described as being as painful enough to being worse than death) and destroyed in front of him, killing him finally.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He tries to come off as a polite educator despite rigging the class and the mock battle to humiliate the demons. He also never intended to let the demons leave the academy alive.
  • Hate Sink: Maybe the biggest one the series featured. Unlike other despicable antagonists like Emilia (who, pre-redemption, at the very least cared about her family) and Jerga (whose monstrous actions were motivated by the pain of losing his loved ones), he lacks any redeeming quality and is portrayed as an unreasonable mass of hatred that not only despises demons, but is willing to turn all of his students and subordinates in mindless puppets and living bombs for the sake of ensuring the genocide of all demons. Is telling something when he's the only character of the series Anos willingly kills (though he gets resurrected thanks to being anthropomorphic magic) without giving him a second chance, unlike the aforementioned Emilia/Jerga. The closest he gets to some kind of sympathy is that he's a magical homunculus fated to hate on demons by default no matter what he does or how many times he dies.
  • The Heavy: Although Jerga is technically the main villain of the Hero Academy arc, since he spends most of the arc dormant until its last battle, Diego, as the headmaster of the Hero Academy and the leader of the humans, is the primary villain during the first half of the arc, until being forced to share this position with Avos Dilhevia/Lay for the second half and then being overriden by Jerga himself at the climax.
  • I'm Having Soul Pains: After Anos rips out his Source from his chest, he starts damaging it to subject Diego to pain that Anos is happy to explain is much worse than death.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: He subjects Misha to this, repeatedly stabbing her with a sword while she's down. After Anos arrives to save her, he returns the gesture in kind and then some when he rips out his Source and starts torturing him with it.
  • Karmic Transformation: Anos turns him into a demon, but the spell to do so also makes him monstrous-looking due to the evil in his heart.
  • Me's a Crowd: After Anos destroys his Source, Diego comes back the next day with no memories of his previous death. This is because Eleonore mass-produces his Source.
  • Soul Jar: Episode 13 implies he was the main host for Jerga's disembodied spirit, or at least his personified hatred. Jerga's spirit is seen tearing itself away from Diego once the final stages of his genocidal plan was beginning to enter it's final stages, killing his host.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Once Jerga's plans begins to come to fruition, his spirit leaves Diego's body and becomes the Anti-Demon spell, while Diego collapses dead.
  • Younger Than They Look: Despite looking like an adult, he was spawned by Eleonore with his current appearance so it's difficult to tell what his real chronological age is. However, it is noted that the second Diego is newly created, due to the fact that Anos killed the first Diego by tearing out his source.

    Eleonore Bianca

Eleonore Bianca

Voiced by: Sayumi Watabe (Japanese), Abby Trott (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eleonore.png
A student of the elite Jerga Kanon class and the only one who isn't hostile towards demons.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: Eleonore is essentially all the goodness and humanity from the original Jerga.
  • Cleavage Window: It's rather small, but still visible.
  • Death Seeker: She wants Anos to kill her so that she isn't used to wage war against the demons, though Anos insists that he can prevent the war while allowing her to live happily.
  • Enemy Without: She's an inverted example for Jerga, since she inherited part of his Source, yet desires peace between humans and demons. This isn't simply an accident, since the narration states that Jerga was conflicted between wanting revenge on the demons and wanting to keep his people from experiencing the same feelings of hatred that he does, with Eleonore representing the latter.
  • Hand-or-Object Underwear: When she gets encased nude in a crystal, she is shown in one of the light novel's illustrations to cover her ample bust with her arms and hands.
  • Meaningful Appearance: The embodiment of all Jerga's positive qualities ends up taking a form similar to the people he most loved, his lost wife and daughter.
  • Mother of a Thousand Young: Although she didn't actually birth them, so much as magically spawn them into existence, Eleonore definitely counts. She has been forced to continually mass produce the school's top students for the last two millenia! In particular, by the time Anos meets and free her, she had created approximately 10,000 Zeshia copies, making the trope quite literally in this case.
  • Mum Looks Like a Sister: Despite creating Diego and Zeshia and considering herself their "mother", she looks like a teenager.
  • Opposite-Sex Clone: Despite deriving the essence of her existence from the blatantly male Jerga's source, she wound up being an equally blatant woman.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She has long black hair and pale skin. She happens to be beautiful and voluptuous.
  • Really 700 Years Old: She's around 2,000 years old, created in the immediate aftermath of Anos' death and sealing off the four realms from each other.
  • Shameful Strip: During the interschool exams, she was stripped and encased in a crystal. Fortunately, Anos creates new clothing for her when he comes to save her.
  • Stepford Smiler: Despite the happy façade she puts on, she suffers from crippling depression and fundamentally believes she deserves to die for constantly sending her children to their deaths over the past 2000 years.
  • Sympathy for the Devil:
    • Despite Diego's abusive treatment of her and Zeshia, she pities him because he's constantly being recreated just to feel hatred towards demons.
    • She is about the only student in the Hero Academy who does not treat Anos with a hint of animosity or hostility, gladly letting them inside using her authority when they arrive far sooner than they expected due to teleportation, and leaking Diego's plans to Anos to put a stop to his plans to murder the demon delegation during the interschool exams.
  • Women Are Wiser: The Anthropomorphic Personification of all the goodness, sanity, and overall wiseness that was held within Jerga apparently was also connected to a feminine part of his identity, since when that split from him it became the very female Opposite-Sex Clone Eleonore.

Rank 1 of the Hero Academy.

  • Action Bomb: The Zeshia clones are all capable of detonating their Sources and being quickly replaced with a identical duplicate, which Jerga planned to use to wipe out the demons.
  • Artificial Human: The Zeshia clones' Sources are all mass-produced from Eleonore, the one with Jerga's original source.
  • Clone Army: Their purpose is to become a massive military force for the genocide of all demonkind, regardless of the races intermixing having children with each other these past 1,000 years.
  • Cute Mute: An adorable tiny girl basically incapable of speech for the most part. It doesn't stop her from acting quite endearing outside of a battle.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Her eyes are dark grey and murky without a hint of light in them in during the inter-academy competitions, as she doesn't want to kill Demons despite the brainwashing effects of Aske forcing her to try to do so.
  • Emotionless Girl: Downplayed. She doesn't seem to emote at first, even when blowing herself up, but during the skirmish with the demon army, she cries and reveals she doesn't want to kill the demons.
  • The Voiceless: She only has one line so far: "Please save her. Please save Mama."
  • Wham Line: At the end of the hero arc, after being The Voiceless the entire time, she finally says one line: "Please save her. Please save Mama."
  • We Have Reserves: Keeps using self-destruct magic on herself in her first battle with Anos, as Eleonore can just keep cloning new copies of her. Taken to the extreme when she unwillingly becomes part of the Demon Subjugation Force and we see an entire battalion of her standing shoulder to shoulder.
  • Younger Than They Look: Despite looking like teenager, the Zeshia clones were all spawned by Eleonore with their current appearance so it's difficult to tell what their real chronological age is.

Rank 2 of the Hero Academy.

  • Ax-Crazy: He is very eager to see Anos killed with the help of 10 million humans and fellow students giving him power through the spell Aske.
  • The Dragon: Given the other top ranked students from the Hero Academy don't have what it takes to hold the position (Zesshia is unable to speak, while Raos and Heine are too impulsive), he acts as the right hand man of Diego for the most part.
  • Evil Makes You Ugly: While otherwise a bonafide, bespectacled Bishōnen, in the climax of his fight with Anos, when Aske takes the final toll on his sanity, his face deforms in an horrible wrinkled grimace with his eyes about to jump from their orbits.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: He wears glasses and is antagonistic towards the demon students.
  • The Glasses Come Off: When he faces off against Anos, the most powerful of the Demon class (and in general, really), he casually takes off his glasses and tosses them to the ground.
  • Not So Stoic: He seems calm and composed until Anos shrugs off all of his attacks, at which point he becomes more enraged and unhinged.

Rank 4 of the Hero Academy.

  • Boisterous Bruiser: Of all the members of his class, he's one of the brashest, rudest, and most eager to fight.
  • Delinquent Hair: His hair is spiky, with a wide red stripe in the center, and a small ponytail in the back.
  • Death In All Directions: Combined with Time Stands Still. His personal barrier, Birdesd, can trap an opponent in a localize timestop, complete with inverted colors, and restrain even their magical power. To top it, the barrier is also filled with dozens of fireballs which further limits an opponent's movements. To Raos' horror, Sasha easily smash the barrier to smitherens with her eyes' magic.
  • Elemental Armor: He can cloak himself in an armor of flames. Since it only clothes him externally, it predictably does jack-shit against the poison Sasha had infected his badge with.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Didn't bother to check his school badge when Sasha seemingly let it go. Turns out she had covertly laced it with poison magic which cripples him at a critical moment and giving her the win in their battle.
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: Despite also underestimating Anos and the demons, he notes that it's foolish for the purebloods to disregard Anos's strength when they fail to outperform the so-called misfit.
  • Playing with Fire: His elemental affinity and holy sword, Garewford, seems to be aligned to fire magic.
  • Technicolor Fire: His fire magic is a pale blue.
