Valkyria Chronicles 4 Characters
Atlantic Federation: Squad E ( Tank Commanders | Scouts | Shocktroopers | Lancers | Engineers | Snipers | Grenadiers ) | Federation Navy
East Europan Imperial Alliance: X-0

Shocktroopers in general

  • The Big Guy: Shocktroopers tend to fulfill this role regardless of their physique. They have the best effective HP of any class in the game and can be quite the bully when unleashed on small mobs of Imps. A fair few of them also have Potentials that let them shrug off half of the damage done by enemy interception fire, allowing them to go Rambo without hassle. Incidentally, some Shocktroopers are also Blood Knights or are rather Hot-Blooded.
  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: Downplayed. "Terrible" is a bit harsh considering the fact that Shocktroopers actually hit their targets quite reliably even at low levels, but they tend to have the worst Aim stat of the lot, next to Lancers and Grenadiers. And it's fairly easy to understand considering the fact that they fire their weapons from the hip instead of shouldering them like the other classes do.
  • Kill It with Fire: Shocktroopers could equip flamethrowers to their machineguns. These weapons ignore cover and can kill most enemy infantry in a single swipe. A shocktrooper sneaking up on a group of Imps hiding behind sandbags could even kill all of them in one fell swoop if lined up properly.
  • Lightning Bruisers: Shocktroopers have above average stats in every category: their HP and DEF are both high enough to shrug off intercept fire from enemy infantry, their AP is only slightly below an Engineer's, and their attack power is second to none but the Hafen and Grenadiers.

Age: 20
Likes: Raz, Vancey Fioré; Gertrude Albright (after squad story)

  • The Apprentice: To Vancey, who decides to take him under her wing and teach him how to be a better shot.
  • Bash Brothers: Zaiga claims to be fighting together with Raz at times. His Squad Story centers on getting over the fear of being too dependent on his presence, which implies that he does this to show off most of the time.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Yes, Zaiga, you really should have listened to Raz before he and the main leaders of Squad E went out on recon. You should have remembered to feed the rescue dog, lest he get hungry and jump ship just to raid a nearby village currently occupied by the 502nd Imperial Tank Platoon!
  • Hero-Worshipper: Is this in spades for Raz.
  • Hot-Blooded: He's very passionate about his work with the Rangers, especially when a gunfight starts.
  • Inspirational Insult: The way Gertrude dismisses him for both being Darcsen and always relying on Raz when things get though inspires him to show her up by becoming a better soldier.
  • Interclass Friendship: What he and Gertrude eventually develop.
  • Number Two: Raz's Right Hand Man. Or so he claims.
  • Only One Name: Like all Darscen.
  • Revealing Cover Up: He tries to corroborate Connor's bogus report about why the squad went missing, which only serves to fuel Raz's suspicion.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: This starts the DLC story, "A Captainless Squad". Zaiga forgot to feed Ragnarok when the main cast was out on recon. Ragnarok goes looking for food outside Centurion, which means the squad has to go look for him and make themselves almost AWOL in the process.

    Simon Bale

Simon Bale

Voiced by: Toshiya Chiba (JP)

Age: 25
Likes: None (default); Viola Bryce, Emmy Mistral (after squad story)

  • Ax-Crazy: Literally. Prior to joining the army he brandished an axe as a highway man.
  • Blood Knight: Simon is very enthusiastic about fighting. Perhaps a bit too enthusiastic.
  • Boxed Crook: Was placed into the Federation military after he made the bad decision of ambushing a Federation Army vehicle. How he managed to get into the Ranger Corps and shake off the status of penal soldier is beyond conventional understanding unless one thinks of the likelihood of rangers putting themselves in more danger than all other army units combined.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: When he hears about the difficult lives of Viola and Emmy, he's so moved he starts crying.
  • The Bully: This is even one of his potentials, where he deals extra damage when attacking wounded enemies.
  • Call a Human a "Meatbag": An unusual example of one human doing this to another. Simon tends to refer to his enemies as "meat sacks".
  • Fire-Forged Friends - The entirety of his squad story development.
Simon: "I learned my lesson: Three gunners are better than one!"
Also Simon: "When it comes to going buck-wild on the battlefield, the more the merrier! Ya-haa!"
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Simon is bloodthirsty and will charge headlong into enemy gunfire for the chance to add to his body count.
Simon: (at the top of his lungs) "YIPPIE KA-YAY!! IT's TIME TO SPRAY AND PRAY!!"
  • More Dakka: Simon's preferred M.O.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Whenever he's around women, his bloodthirsty personality falls off and talks to them in an awkward yet polite tone. When Crymaria shows up in "A captainless squad," Simon is shivering in utter terror.
  • The Power of Friendship: Probably the last character one would expect this from, but his unlockable potential boosts his stat when he attacks with one of his friends.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: His is the same as Emmy's except, unlike her, he sreams his at the top of his lungs:
    "FOUND YOOUUU!!"
  • The Quincy Punk: Bloodthirsty, doesn't like authority, and has a dyed mohawk. After the war, he starts a rock band called Friendly Fire.
  • Secret Character: Is only recruited after the player achieves 250 kills in combat.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Simon might be on your side, but he enjoys killing people more than many of the game's villains.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Played for laughs. Simon and Viola both fail to realize that Emmy only teams up with them because they're both trigger-happy and always charge straight at the enemy. Which is why Emmy says they make good meat shieldsnote .
  • With Cat Like Tread: Simon's first instinct when sneaking up on an enemy is to scream as loudly as he can.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: While living as a highway man, he claims he refused to attack women. His awkward behavior seems to confirm this.

    Scott Aldiss

Scott Aldiss

Voiced by: Kazumasa Fukagawa (JP)
Rank: Private
Age: 26
Likes: Norid Saarinen, Azusa Tsukikage

  • The Comically Serious
  • Confusing Multiple Negatives: During his Squad Story he uses these coupled with Exact Words in order to cover for Azusa's role as a spy.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He agrees with Azusa that Norrid's Nature Lover shtick gets weird.
  • Ineffectual Loner: Not that he's powerful in a group to begin with. Scott's Literal-Minded nature means he cannot operate without somebody around to give him orders, thus confusing him and reducing his performance by way of the Needs Direction potential. Completing his squad story replaces this with Faithful Friend, eliminating this weakness.
  • Literal-Minded: Takes everything literally and follows instructions exactly as he hears them; if told to fire on an enemy he will keep firing on them even after they're dead until told to stop. Allies need to be careful how they phrase orders around him as a result.
  • Nice Guy: For all his literal-mindedness, Scott is good-natured and very loyal to his friends.
  • One-Word Vocabulary: Nearly everything he says is some variation of either "Sir, yes sir!" or "Sir, no sir!"
  • Pre Asskicking Oneliner: When his Undogeable Shot potential activates. It's about what one would expect from Scott.
    No Sir!

Likes: Ferrier Blancheur, Hanna Carroll, Jean Matrix

  • Deep South: His accent and speech patterns. His bio says he is from the USV, the in-universe version of the United States of America.
  • For the Lulz: He joined the army because he thought it would be funny for a guy like him to join the army.
  • Hidden Depths: For all of his rediculous jokes, Stanley can be surprisingly philosophical.
  • "Knock Knock" Joke: His line when triggering a last stand.
Stanley: Knock Knock... Who's there?... Me.
  • Motor Mouth: The man just. Can't. Shut. Up!. This is even one of his potentials, and it increases his Accuracy. Somehow.
  • Must Make Her Laugh: A goal of his regarding Ferrier.
  • The Pollyanna: He's aware most of his jokes suck but continues telling them to help relieve the tension of his squad due to the war.

    Ryan Ford

Voiced by: Hisao Egawa (JP), Xander Mobus (EN)
Rank: Private
Age: 65
Likes: Keigel Hohmann, Ronald Albee, Thomas "Odin" Kevin

  • And the Adventure Continues: Once the Second Europan War ends, Ryan simply enlists in another army and fights in another war.
  • Brutal Honesty: He likens the demise of Squad F to pawns who got sacrificed, which greatly angers Ronald Albee who overheard the conversation. Although Ryan acknowledges it was an insensitive thing to say and that he wouldn't have said it if he'd known Ronald was there listening, he still stands by the statement.
  • Child Soldier: He's been involved in war since his childhood, assisting his father in battles and also carrying out assassinations.
  • Eyepatch of Power
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: One that runs across his face and over his nose.
  • Libation for the Dead: What he and Keigel really ended up doing with that bottle of his, to honor the memory of their fallen comrades from Squad F. It Unfortunatley led to a misunderstanding with surviving member Ronald, but in the end they all reconcile.
  • My New Gift Is Lame: A group of soldier he served with in the past came together to gift him a beautiful bottle of alcohol, and wouldn't take a no for an answer. This despite Ryan not being a drinker and having an equally easily satisfiable habit in the form of sweets.
  • Never Learned to Read: He is illiterate.
  • No Social Skills: The fact that his whole life has been spent on the battlefield has left him with little ability to handle normal social situations.
  • Older Than They Look: His profile gives his age as 65, yet he looks to be in his 40s or early 50s at most.
  • Old Soldier: He is easily the character with the most battle experience out of the entire cast.
  • Private Military Contractors: A renowned mercenary who has fought in many wars across the continent.
  • Sweet Tooth: So hooked on sugar that he'll actually experience withdrawal if he goes too long without it.
  • The Teetotaler: He never drinks, yet he does own a bottle in spite of it. Nor does he smoke.

    Vancey Fioré

Vancey Fioré

Voiced by: Miyuki Kawashou (JP)
Rank: Private
Age: 27
Likes: Zaiga, Jester Mooney, Gertrude Albright

  • Alcohol Hic: When deployed from as part of your initial force, Vancey lets out an inebriated hiccup.
  • Blatant Lies: When activated, Vancey may say "Stone cold sober" in a drunken slur.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: At first blush, Vancey might look like a hopeless drunk who speaks with a constant slur and can't even stand straight. And she does seem the part initially, but once her squad story is completed, her badass side starts to rear its head.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She's the Sole Survivor of a Federation Army-backed special forces operation that went bad. Her memories are so traumatic that her constant inebriation actually makes her more capable of combat than she would be if she were sober.
  • Death Seeker: If she sends off Raz and covers him during his final stand, she expresses that she's felt like she's been ready to die for a long time.
  • Double Tap: Vancey is one of three Shocktroopers who gains the 'Double Attack' potential, a skill which automatically allows her to attack twice in the same turn. And given the Shocktroops' innate high attack stat, it nearly guarantees the target's death.
  • Elites Are More Glamorous: Gertrude mentions about her SF experience before joining Squad E. The game doesn't mention what specific unit she used to be with.
  • Fatal Family Photo: If you choose Vancey for the suicide mission in chapter 16, she'll leave you a photo of herself with her special Ops squadmates. Marie tells you that Vancey always carried it with her.
  • Hero of Another Story: Vancey's time in special forces operations.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: To a ridiculous degree. Despite her shaky hand due to being constantly inebriated, all of her shots somehow manage to hit the center mark when she is training Zaiga. Fittingly, she also has the second best accuracy stat of all shocktroopers in the game, only beaten by Raz.
  • Lady Drunk: She is constantly inebriated, even on duty. One must wonder how her liver manages to hold on for so long.
  • Lethal Joke Character: She's introduced as a drunk with terrible debuffs, but completing her squad story reveals a Dark and Troubled Past that replaces said debuff with one of the best buffs in the game. As in, buffing all her stats.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Invoked by her "Former Elite" potential. When it activates, her memories as a special Ops agent causes her to immediately sober up and boosts all her stats.
Vancey: (sober) "Fine, I'll get serious."
  • Magikarp Power: She joins with a set of potentials that all actively hinder her, including one where she occasionally wastes her turn, but complete her Squad Story and she replaces the turn-wasting potential with Former Elite, which gives her a chance to buff all of her stats. Mind you that she already has stats on par with Raz, making her one of the most accurate and hardest to hit shocktroopers in the game. She still has her other negative potentials but they activate so rarely and affect her main role so little that it's basically a non-issue. The difficulty of realizing this Magikarp Power is increased by the the fact that her Squad Story also requires Gertrude, who only joins your squad once you have at least a million ducats in reserve, meaning it will likely be one of the last Squad Stories unlocked.
  • Mentor's New Hope: Mentoring Zaiga helps her find some much needed solace in her own life. This translates in-game by her occasionaly sobering up and reclaiming her former expertise as a Special Forces Operator, allowing her to go toe-to-toe with fellow Shocktrooper and resident badass Raz.
  • Nice Girl: She's happy to take Zaiga under her wing, and tries to get Gertrude to move past her hatred of Darcsens.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The only moments when Vancey isn't drunk off her rocks are when she's reminiscing about her old days, or when she's suffering from PTSD brought on by the Noodle Incident that caused the death of her old team.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Being the sole survivor of her previous team really did a number on her. She copes by drinking and keeps on fighting in spite of it.
  • Story And Gameplay Integration: In her squad story, Vancey is able to spot an imperial unit trying to ambush Zaiga. Turns out one of her in-battle abilities (Ambush Spotter) does exactly that!
  • Survivor Guilt: Her initial reason for drinking. She witnessed her entire previous squad die.

    Viola Bryce

Viola Bryce

Voiced by: Yuka Saitou (JP)
Rank: Private
Age: 20
Likes: Jean Matrix; Simon Bale, Emmy Mistral (after squad story)

  • The Berserker: Viola loves to fight and has the potentials "Berserker", giving her extra AP when her health is below half and "Aggressive", giving her boosted defense when spotted by many enemies, encouraging having her charge headlong into large numbers of enemies.
  • Cool People Rebel Against Authority: She initially holds little respect for Claude or anyone else issuing orders. After her Squad Story, she at the very least realizes that Claude is capable and that respecting his command is probably in her best interests.
  • Fantastic Racism: Viola is one of the few characters in Squad E who holds prejudice against Darcsens, giving her the "Darcsen Discriminator" potential. Unlike Gertrude, she doesn't get over it.
    Viola: I'm not racist, but...
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: She only believes in strength, whether it be her own or anyone she serves with. Anyone who doesn't meet her standards is considered deadweight.
  • Ironic Echo: Seen near the end of her squad story. Viola calls Emmy "weak" after Simon saves from an enemy sniper. Emmy starts to retort, but stops short when she sees Viola's being targeted. After capping the other sniper, Emmy casually hurls Viola's own insult back at her.
Emmy: (monotone) "Well, well... who's the weak one now?"
  • Irony: Viola has quite a fascist mentality. She has Fantastic Racism towards Darscens (who are meant to be counterparts of the Jews and Romani) that she doesn't get over, she belives in the power of strength over all, and even her disrespect for authority is more akin to a skinhead refusing to bow to weakness instead of an anarchist's general disrefard for hierarchy. However, she has nothing but hatred for the Imperial Army, who also share her mentality except the part about authority.
  • Training from Hell: Her mother was killed by imperials, her father fully dedicated himself to avenge her -which included training Viola for combat from an early age. He got his revenge eventually but left his daughter an orphan. Viola herself now closely follows in his footsteps.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: After the war, it's said that she starts a career in pro wrestling and uses "The Violator" as her ring name.

Age: 21

  • Boyish Short Hair: She keeps hers short which, along with her boyish appearance, makes her almost seem androgynous.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Her Foul Play potential increases her firepower when performing a sneak attack.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father is a deadbeat who abandoned her and her mother a long time ago. Emmy doesn't even know who he was.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: If anyone heals her, she tells them she didn't ask for their help.
  • Double Tap: She's the only other Shocktrooper, besides Raz and Vancey, to gain the 'Double Attack' potential. If it triggers, the target's death is assured, unless they're either a boss, or an enemy tank.
  • Emotionless Girl: Emmy always looks and sounds as if she's bored and the fact that she's doesn't have any friends doesn't bother in the leastnote .
  • Face Death with Dignity: If she's killed in battle, her last words are that she isn't afraid to die. At most, she'll gripe that she hasn't been paid yet (said as her alternate death quote). And, if she's chosen to accompany Raz for the suicide mission in chapter 16, she's among the few to show no signs of nervousness. Instead, she muses that she never thought she'd do "charity work".
  • The Friend Nobody Likes:
    • According to her personnel file, she's opportunistic and willing to do anything if she thinks she'll gain from it financially - even if it means betraying her allies. A fact which makes the rest of Squad E distrustful of her.
    • If you check her stats screen prior to completing the "Mischief Makers" squad story, you'll see she's the only member of Squad E who doesn't have any friends.
  • Not So Stoic: The only time you'll see her smile is when she scores a kill, since each one means money in the bank.
  • Only in It for the Money: The reason why Emmy agrees to be deployed, regardless if it's for a mercenary contract or when she got assigned to Squad E. However, in her Squad Story, it's revealed that she's doing it to provide for her mother.
  • Power at a Price: Invoked as a gameplay mechanic by her Penny Pincher potential, which causes her to fire fewer shots than normal in exchange for automatic critical damage.
  • Pragmatic Hero: She only joined the Gallian military for the pay, but has contemplated defecting to the Imperial Army if they offered a higher salary.
  • Pre Mortem Oneliner: Said in monotone whenever she approaches a victim from behind:
    Found you...
  • Private Military Contractors: One of the few soldiers in the EA to have a mercenary background alongside Ryan.
  • Tsundere: Set to full "tsun", even when her allies are trying to help her.
Emmy: (indignantly) "I-I didn't ask for your help!"
    • If you use the "Command" function to have a squad mate follow you, they'll usually reply "Lead the way." or "Right behind you!". Try it with Emmy and she drones, "Yeah, yeah."
    • She's even tsundere in death. If you choose her for the suicide mission in chapter 16, she's the only one who doesn't say anything to Raz. She simply stops in her tracks gives him a look. When he asks why, she averts her eyes and tells him "Just go. Before I change my mind."

Voiced by: Momoko Soyama (JP), Brianna Knickerbocker (EN)
Rank: Private
Age: 23
Likes: Mabel Drake, Rebecca Longhurst, Gertrude Albright

  • Doesn't Like Guns: Due to initially seeing them as cowardly. After a spat with Rebecca and Mabel, however, she gets over it.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Initially insisted on training with a sword over her gun. This has led to lots of friction with other soldiers, as they insult her allegedly poor marksmanship.
  • Honor Before Reason: She insists that the code of chivalry demands she fight with a sword, as guns are cowardly. This flies in the face of actual history, as knights, like all other soldiers of any state army, were quick to adopt firearms as primary weapons (the sword has always been a personal side-arm, to be used only when no other weapon is available).
  • Jeanne d'Archétype: As a knightly blonde woman with a thick French accent, she was clearly based on Joan of Arc (or at least on her common pop cultural portrayal).
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Aspires to be one, like her father.
  • Reason Before Honor: After her Squad Story, she reasons that a knight fights the weapon that is appropriate for their situation, rather than steadfastly sticking to one traditional weapon. Fleuret mentions that she will commit to training with her gun, since it's appropriate for modern warfare.
  • Token Minority: Speaks in a thick French (Or at least this world's equivalent) accent.

    Ferrier Blancheur

Voiced by: Mariko Koda (JP), Katelyn Gaunt (EN)

Likes: Jean Matrix; Stanley Barclay (after squad story)

  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Subverted. You'd expect someone wearing a knight's helmet all the time to have a few screws loose, but she's actually quiet and pretty straight-laced. Her only weird trait is that she feels exposed if her helmet is removed, which is understandable given her circumstances.
  • Cool Mask: Wears one at all times. Becomes slightly less cool when you learn why she wears it.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: If she survives the war, she gains the courage to remove her mask, leaves her Jerkass father and lives happily in the countryside with her mother.
  • The Faceless: She's never seen without her helmet on, and when it gets knocked off, her face is deliberately kept out of the frame.
  • Girlish Pigtails: About the one thing you can make out of her head through the helmet.
  • Heroic Bastard: Is the daughter of a noble and her mistress, and is on the hero's side.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: To her noble father's mistress, hence why he ordered her to wear a mask for the rest of her life to conceal his infidelity.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Implied. The player never actually gets to see her face, but at the end of their squad story Jean manages to break the lock on Ferrier's mask. After the mask falls to the ground, Stanley is absolutely awestruck by how beautiful she looks. That's saying something considering she's likely gone her whole life without wearing makeup or even washing her face because she was forced to wear the mask at all times even while bathing.

    Lily Ashley

Lily Ashley

Voiced by: Minami Tsuda (JP), Sarah Anne Williams (EN)
Rank: Private
Age: 18
Likes: Nico Emery, Thomas "Odin" Kevin, Jimmy Frank

  • Born Unlucky: Things regularly break and go wrong in her presence. She's fine with this, though, and being afflicted with a status ailment actually improves her performance.
  • Creepy Crows: In the "Unfortunate Souls" story, she notices a flock of crows flying to the east, an ill omen she considers.
  • Creepy Good: Refers to herself as cursed and delights in bad omens.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: All of her potentials are geared towards combat, and she has none that would improve her survivability save for a random HP regeneration, which can be dangerous considering how she's got the lowest HP and worst Dodge stat in the class. Players who seek to get the most mileage out of her should give out as many Defense Boost orders as possible.
  • Cursed with Awesome: She appears to revel in her bad luck; apparently she joined Squad E just to see what sort of disasters she could cause.
  • Doom Magnet: Her bio mentions her terrible luck, and that misfortune could rub off on other people, thus making many distance themselves from her.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: In "Unfortunate Souls," she casually talks about having woke up from a dream of Squad E being annihilated by the Imperial Army to Jimmy and Odin.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite her creepy obsession with bad luck, even she is annoyed by Odin's "god of war" act.
  • Fortune Teller: At the end of the war, she becomes one, though of course she only ever sees bad things for her clients.
  • Icy Gray Eyes: Her gray eyes are the cold and strong willed variety.
  • The Jinx: She's got this trope wherever she goes as a negative Potential. She loses accuracy with her guns if people are near her and grenades have a chance to do little damage. It's also because of this that her, Jimmy and Odin end up surrounded by Imps in "Unfortunate Souls."
  • Not Afraid to Die: At the end of the map in "Unfortunate Souls," Lily says she's not afraid to die since nobody will miss her, a girl who brings bad luck wherever she goes. It isn't until she meets Jimmy and Odin that she finds a reason to die fighting.
  • Odd Friendship: The gloomy woman is friends with Nico.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Though her smile is more on the creepy side than cheerful.
