Valkyria Chronicles 4 Characters
Atlantic Federation: Squad E ( Tank Commanders | Scouts | Shocktroopers | Lancers | Engineers | Snipers | Grenadiers ) | Federation Navy
East Europan Imperial Alliance: X-0

Scouts in general

  • Fragile Speedster: Scouts have the most AP and highest dodge rate of any units, but due to wearing light armor, they have the lowest DEF. stat which makes them extremely vulnerable to intercept fire.
  • Grenade Launcher: Sufficiently high level scouts gain access to a grenade laucher attatchment for their rifle, allowing them to toss 'nades farther and higher than any other class, making using them overall safer. Grenade launchers can also be fitted onto Dunkel crossbows, allowing Nikola and Chiara, if they are unlocked, to use them as well.
  • Loophole Abuse: The A rank condition for most maps simply require the player to capture the enemy's main base in as few turns as possible. Since scouts have innately high AP, they're often used to just bumrush to the goal while soakingnote  enemy fire. This is known as the "Scout rush" tactic, and those with the Double Movement potential (e.g. Minerva, Christel, Odin, and Alicia) are best suited for it.

    Claude Wallace

Claude Wallace

During missions where the Hafen is unavailable, Claude Wallace is controllable on foot as a Scout. For character tropes related to him, visit the Squad E page. For gameplay tropes when he's commanding the Hafen, see Tank Commanders.
    Minerva Victor

Minerva Victor

The leader of Squad F and (self-proclaimed) rival of Claude Wallace. She and Ronald Albee joins Squad E at the end of Chapter 5. For character tropes related to her, visit the Squad E page.
    Christel Ward

Christel Ward

Rank: Corporal
Age: 22
Likes: Minerva Victor
Squad F's Number Two and extreme admirer of Minerva. For character tropes related to her, visit the Squad E page.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Christel starts out already at Corporal rank, however she still needs to "eat" as much CP as anyone else before she could be made into a Leader.
  • Informed Attribute: Christel's bio describes her as having poor eyesight, hence her glasses. She also happens to be the second most accurate Scout in the base game, just slightly below Minerva stats-wise.
    Curtis Blackwell

  • Berserk Button: Do not pick on his sister. EVER (see directly below).
  • Big Brother Instinct: He's usually reserved and fairly easy to get along with, but that changes if anyone picks on his kid sister, Eileen. His personnel files says that his first fist fight was with a group of neighborhood thugs that made her cry. Also seen at the end of his squad story, when Curtis snipes an Imperial scout who was aiming at her. Laurent later describes it as Curtis "charging in like a demon" to protect his sister.
  • Birds of a Feather: His unlockable affinity is with Louffe, who has much the same trouble talking with people that Curtis does.
  • Chick Magnet: If he survives the war, Curtis becomes very popular with the girls in his hometown for being a "veteran". It helps that there's already a charm to his roguish, intimidating appearance. Eileen does not approve.
  • Childhood Friends: With Laurent.
  • Face of a Thug: His default expression makes it seem that he's always scowling, so most of his teammates are too intimidated to come near him. In truth, he's just painfully withdrawn, so he's always deep in thought about how to properly express himself.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Has a small one above his left eye.
  • Gray-and-Grey Morality: Unlike his friend Laurent, Curtis doesn't demonize his enemies or assume that all Imperials are automatically evil.
  • Shrinking Violet: Curtis has trouble talking to anyone he doesn't already know well.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Is a very capable soldier who joined to protect the people he cares about. Too bad he can't carry on a conversation with a stranger to save his life.
  • The Stoic: He's not very emotive or talkative, which only adds to the impression that he's both a level-headed and cold-hearted soldier. The former is indeed correct. The latter...not so much.
  • True Companions: With his kid sister and their mutual friend, Laurent. They've known each other since childhood and are assigned to the same unit within Squad E.

  • Cut Lex Luthor a Check: At the end of his Squad Story, Rosetta notes that his ability to estimate an item's value at a glance, a skill he developed from robbing corpses, could be used to find honest work as an appraiser.
  • The Cynic: He's out for himself, and doesn't believe anyone would really be interested in helping him out of compassion. It's even one of his Potentials.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Aside from being discriminated against due to his Darcsen heritage, the people he cared about keep dying on him.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: He lashes out particularly hard when Nico tries to strike a friendship with him, believing her to be looking down on him.
  • Good Hair, Evil Hair: Godwin has a decidedly evil pointed goatee.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Godwin has a straight scar over one eye, giving him a dangerous appearance.
  • Only One Name: As with all Darcsens (who are a persecuted people), he has no surname.
  • Robbing the Dead: Isn't above stealing from fallen soldiers, mostly because he sells their personal effects.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: Has this attitude thowards Nico.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: Discussed by Rosetta and Nico in their squad story with Godwin.
  • Token Evil Teammate: He joined the war to loot corpses (mainly out of financial necessity). He grows out of this with Nico and Rosetta's help.
  • Tsundere: A platonic example. Despite his initial animosity, he comes to care about Nico by the end of their Squad Story. He doesn't like to show it much, though.

  • The Gambling Addict: Frequently gambles away his soldier's wages and is constantly in debt.
  • Mr. Vice Guy: In spite of his gambling and apathy towards his debts, Jester is beloved by Squad E for his heart. During his Squad Story, he volunteers to cover a wounded soldier's retreat, despite thinking that two of his squamates are trying to kill him.
  • Only Sane Man: Compared to Connor and Teresa, he's a totally normal person aside from his horrible gambling addiction. Gambling pales in comparison to dissecting dead soldiers and writing about such.
  • Oral Fixation: He's never seen without a small stick in his mouth.
  • Reformed, but Not Tamed: Invoked by his Squad Story potential being named "Reformed?"
  • What You Are in the Dark: While running away Form Teresa and Connor's antics, he stumbles upon a couple Federation soldiers in the middle of an Imperial ambush. Earlier that day he lost all of his monthly salary to one of these men playing cards. In spite of it, Jester doesn't esitate in telling the wounded soldiers to fall back while he gives them cover. Fortunally for all involved, Teresa and Connor also arrived on the scene and together procede to bail everyone out, with the former praising Jester quite a bit for his selflessness.

  • Basement-Dweller: Formerly. He was living with his parents until they forced him to enlist.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In "Unfortunate Souls," he comes to the rescue of Lily and Jimmy by shooting a shocktrooper dead while they were cornered.
  • Call to Agriculture: After the war, he returns to work on his family's farm.
  • Chuunibyou: Very prone to dramatics and insists that he has dark power in his Odin persona, which annoys Lily in their shared Squad Story.
Odin: (if chosen in Command Mode) ...The darkness within me!
  • Cowardly Lion: Despite his "god of battle" persona he's absolutely terrified by actual combat. Nevertheless when Lily and Jimmy are in danger during his Squad Story he charges in and saves them. He quite literally is screaming in fear as he snipes the soldiers about to kill Lily and Jimmy.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Insists his squad-mates call him Odin instead of Thomas.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Upon hearing Lily's reasoning on why she joins the military - namely, because she wants to see what disasters she can wreak havoc with her status as The Jinx, he promptly drops this line:
Odin: ...I may be pathetic, but you're twisted, you know that?
  • Expy: Thomas's "Odin" persona shares many of the same mannerisms as Owain from Fire Emblem: Awakening who also reappears in Fire Emblem Fates under the pseudonym "Odin". Both characters' English voice actor is Kaiji Tang.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: He's the third most accurate Scout in the game stats-wise, behind only Minerva and Christel, despite his aiming eye being constantly covered by his bangs.
  • I Work Alone: He tries to play himself off this way at the end of "Unfortunate Souls," but Lily calls him out on it and hopes they keep working together.
  • Meaningful Rename: Adopts the persona of Odin, God of Battle in an attempt to compensate for his cowardice. It doesn't work... at first. At the end of the war, he renames himself "Hades, God of the Harvest."
  • Miles Gloriosus: Thomas fancies himself a great warrior, a "god of battle", as he claims to be. However, he's actually a big chicken who gets nervous whenever an enemy spots him. His squad story is him growing out of this shell and actually becoming a competent soldier.
  • Say My Name: In "Unfortunate Souls," he shouts out Jimmy's name when it looks like he might have died.
  • That Man Is Dead: He insists in his recruitment dialogue that "Thomas Kevin" is long dead, and there's only "Odin" left now.
  • Two First Names: Both "Thomas" and "Kevin" are common male given names. Can potentially go up to three first names if counting his nickname, as Odin is also a first name given to Scandinavian males.
  • With Catlike Tread: Lily snarks at him for screaming while being a scout.

  • The Bartender: After the war, Rosetta establishes a bar where the troubled can come to drink their sorrows away. She is always happy to lend a sympathetic ear, and became very popular as a result.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Much like Nico, if not quite as optimistic as her.
  • Neat Freak: Hates it when things are dirty, a trait parlayed into being a successful barkeeper after the war.
  • Reluctant Warrior: Rosetta doesn't like fighting, and even prays for the people she's killed in battle.
  • Stone Wall: With a high maximum HP, a defense-boosting ultimate potential, Resist Crossfire, and HP Refill, Rosetta is one of the most durable scouts in the game.
  • Token Religious Teammate: No longer affiliated with the church, but not due to losing faith altogether.

  • Creepy Good: Gleefully suggests to Jester that he allow her to dissect him so he can quickly earn some cash off his own organs, and goes on about how as early as having been introduced to grade school frog dissections she's been fascinated with examining organs and specifically joined the military with the intent of getting to dissect people. Her Creepy Doctor potential restores her own AP for healing people, giving the implication that she was actually already there without anybody noticing.
  • Heal Thyself: Courtesy of her fixation with anatomy and medicine, she has a chance of fully healing herself for free during combat.
  • Mad Doctor: In addition to having a potential specifically calling her a Creepy Doctor, among everything else already listed above, her Dissection Obsession potential raises her attack power whenever she can get her hands on an enemy corpse.
  • Psycho for Hire: A rather understated example, and one that fights on the side of good.
  • Scare 'Em Straight: Threatens to dissect Jester and sell his organs to pay off his gambling debts, but eventually reveals this to be a ploy, to show him what could happen if he doesn't get his act together.

  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: She doesn't ever drink, but unfortunately her nose is so sensitive the smell alone inebriates her.
  • Femme Fatale Spy: She gets caught sneaking around the Centurion by Norid and Scott and immediately attempts to seduce them to keep them quiet. Being who they are, this falls completely flat but she still maintains her cover simply because they just don't care.
  • Fetish: After mentioning that Scott smells of sweat, and that it's not a bad smell but rather a manly one, Norid guesses that she may have a thing for body odor. He intended it just to be a joke, but her reaction all but confirmed it for the two men. Her Drunk on Pheromones potential further reinforces the idea.
  • Hime Cut: Fitting for someone from a Japan expy, her Azusa sports the typical Hime Cut associated with Japanese girls, especially for the time period.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: Azusa jumps at the chance to start a life free from her clan's control.
  • The Mole: She's actually spying for a far Eastern country (implied to be an alternate Japan). Played with since she never actually betrays the team.
  • Ninja: Downplayed but she's a spy from a far Eastern nation and she mentions being trained from birth by her clan which is a common ninja trope.
  • The Nose Knows: She's able to find people much easier than most expect for being able to pick out their scents long before actually seeing anything. The best example of this is in the "Captainless Squad" DLC, in which she's able to track down a wayward Ragnarok only by smell in the middle of the freezing Crystal Sea, hours he had ran away.
  • The Sneaky Gal: Has several potentials related to stealth that makes her stronger and more resiliant when fighting unseen and from cover, respectively, and another one that gives her a boost during night ops.
  • Token Minority: The only Scout soldier who's from a Japan Expy.

  • All-Loving Hero: Nico believes that anybody can be a good person. She even makes a point of trying to help Godwin, in spite of how unpleasant he is.
  • Apologetic Attacker: Sometimes shouts "I'm sorry!" while attacking.
  • Belief Makes You Stupid: One of her potentials drops her evasion stats. Apparently she thinks she has divine protection.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Has the "Klutz" potential, which results in her sometimes misplacing her grenades. Her ending, where she devotes herself to helping the victims of the war, notes that people appreciated her effort even though she wasn't the most capable.
  • Determinator: Nico is remarkably stubborn when she decides to do something. Her attempt at helping Godwin invovled chasing him for a full day, including into an active battle.
  • Gender-Blender Name: "Nico" is the diminutive form of "Nicholas"
  • Genki Girl: Nico's bursting with energy most of the time. Take her line for her Early Bird Potential:
    Good Morning!
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: One of the most sweet-natured and optimistic members of Squad E.
  • Heartwarming Orphan: Nico was left at a convent by her parents when she was still a baby.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Nico's base accuracy is average, but she's the only non-DLC unit with the Concentration potential, which gives her the chance for perfect accuracy on an attack.
  • Odd Friendship:
    • Forms one with the bitter, cynical Godwin during their Squad Story.
    • She also has an affinity for the gloomy Lily.
  • The Pollyanna
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: When her Concentration potential activates.
    Lord, help me focus.
  • Stone Wall: Like other Scouts, her offensive output is pretty low compared to most classes. However, her Saintly Smile potential can boost her defense to the point she's more durable than a Shocktrooper.
  • Token Religious Teammate: Courtesy of being brought up by nuns.

  • Combat Medic: Had a nursing background before joining the war, which allows her to make better use of Ragnaid.
  • Fatal Family Photo: One Squad Story reveals that Millennia joined the army to search for her husband, who was declared missing in action during a mission. Claude breaks the bad news to her that they've found his remains, clutching a photo of her.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She's good natured and polite at all times.
  • Her Heart Will Go On: Turning despondent and running from camp after hearing of her husband's death, she's found by the Imperial army and accepts her own fate. However, she's rescued by Rita and Brittany and after a good talk between them she promises to survive the war because it's what her husband would have wanted. She never remarries.
  • Motherly Side Plait: Her hairstyle of choice. Though Millennia doesn't have kids, she does have a gentle personality to pair with the hair.
  • The Mourning After: After the war she goes back to live where she first met her late husband, and never remarries.

  • Badass Adorable: A former member of the town watch, turned highly skilled infantryman, who pouts petulantly if she gets spotted by the enemy.
  • Birds of a Feather: With Kai, over their mutual love of bread. Alicia aspires to become a baker, whereas Kai loves to scarf it down.
  • The Cameo: She joins you along with the rest of Squad 7, after their joint training session with Squad E.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: She's a regular scout unit this time, but her "Mysterious Body" potential foreshadows the fact that she'll eventually awaken as a Valkyur.
  • Girl Next Door: She's a cute small-town girl who aspires to become a baker.
  • The Heart: As in the original Valkyria Chronicles, while Welkin leads Squad 7, it's Alicia that they draw inspiration and emotional support from. With some members of her squad even referring to her as, "the Young Miss."
  • Nice Gal: Her main defining characteristics are her cheerful optimism and her altruism.
  • Power Creep, Power Seep: The events of VC4 take place months prior to Alicia awakening as a Valkyur, so she plays like a regular scout. Even so, she remains one of the best units of her class and is surpassed only by Minerva, in terms of gameplay.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Said whenever her Undodgeable Shot potential activates:
    "Don't even think of dodging..."
  • Super-Speed: She still has her Double Movement potential, which allows her to cover large distances quickly when it triggers.

Rank: Lieutenant Colonel
Age: 20 (The Two Valkyria)

For her Valkyria Chronicles tropes, see the relevant page.
  • All Your Powers Combined: Selvaria uses a Scout template and inherits their high AP count. She also has the endurance of Shocktroopers, albeit bumped up to eleven, has an anti-tank weapon that allows her to behave like a very powerful Lancer, and said weapon's accuracy also allows her to snipe, like a Sniper, though without the ability to zoom in. She can even walk right over anti-personnel mines and detonate them with next to no effect on herself, much like a tank! Really, the only class roles she cannot fulfill are Engineer and Grenadier.
  • Developer's Foresight: Despite her colossal HP pool and extremely beefy damage reduction, Selvaria does have quotes and animations for entering Last Stand. Due to the above conditions, it is fairly safe to say one will likely never trigger this status even if they try.
  • Doomed by Canon: Selvaria's DLC chapter The Two Valkyria is set two years prior to the events of VC1, where she ultimately sacrifices herself for Maximillian by using the Final Flame.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite her devotion to the Empire, she finds Belgar utterly contemptible and makes it clear she will not tolerate him abusing Crymaria.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: Just like in the original, she doesn't carry Ragnaid due to her traumatic experiences as a test subject.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: She becomes playable after completing the "Two Valkyria" DLC chapter.
  • Healing Factor: Selvaria's Valkyria powers allow her to randomly regain all of her health after finishing an attack.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Her playable variant is classed as a Scout so she's incredibly fast, but interception fire does Scratch Damage at best. Her lance is so powerful she can take on tanks even without hitting their weak spots (and if lined up right she can hit multiple tanks!), and she can counter against snipers. She has many drawbacks, such as taking two CP to use, not carrying ragnaid, is unable to hide in grass, cannot crouch behind sandbags, and she can't capture bases - but she's so utterly powerful it barely matters.
  • Loophole Abuse: Selvaria can't actually capture bases as she'd break the game in half... but she can be designated as a leader, letting her soak up the brunt of the abuse while escorting another unit to do it for her.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: Selvaria does not "dodge" in the sense that other characters would. Instead, whenever she registers a "dodge", Selvaria would raise her shield to block projectiles fired at her. If she successfully "dodges" a Lance projectile, she will use the shield to deflect the rocket.
  • More Dakka: While she sadly doesn't have her insanely awesome Ruhm rifle with her, she's got a proper substitute in the Gatling Beam which has range just a bit shy of a sniper rifle with high damage and fire rate.
  • No-Sell: Like the playable Crymaria, Selvaria is immune to knockdowns and slow effects.
  • One-Woman Army: Like all Valkyria, she can turn the tide of battle by herself.
  • Power of Love: Surprisingly believes in this, saying that love can make Crymaria stronger.
  • Redemption Demotion: When "recruited" into Squad E, Selvaria's rank drops down from Brigadier General to Lieutenant Colonel. Justified in that you are essentially "recruiting" her from her DLC chapter, which takes place two years before the game proper when she did hold that rank.
  • Stone Wall: Unlike normal Scouts which have average HP in the mid-300s, Selvaria has HP in the thousands. This actually makes it very hard to keep her healed should her HP somehow dip low, as foot soldiers' Ragnaid and Claude's recovery-based orders will only heal a fixed amount with each use. These are fine when applied to the usual squad member, but Selvaria has health levels comparable to tanks. Thankfully, her self-heal Potential triggers rather frequently.
  • Tough Love: She's initially presented as pretty harsh, but it's clear she was just gauging Crymaria and clears her for combat training. Her talk with Crymaria also makes it clear that she wants her fellow Valkyrur to find purpose.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: What her beam weapon amounts to. It deals stupendous amounts of damage with each shot, capable of killing even Paragon-level enemies in one hit and reducing Ultimate tanks to scrap in less than that. It also destroys cover, and can pierce through and eliminate more than one target, which is duly demonstrated by the row of tanks immediately in front of her when the player is first granted control during her DLC mission. Its only flaw is that it has limited ammo like most anti-tank weaponry and thus needs reloading.
  • Weak, but Skilled: She admits she's actually this to Crymaria, using the full force of her power just to keep up. However, she's also far more acclimated to her powers and far more mentally stable than Crymaria.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: She tries to assure Crymaria that she will find someone who loves her and can bring her happiness and purpose. Luckily for Crymaria, Selvaria's words weren't just wishful thinking.
  • Younger than She Looks: Judging by her demeanor and appearance, you'd be forgiven for thinking she's in her thirties. During the DLC chapter The Two Valkyria, she's only twenty, and younger than Crymaria by three years.
