The yearning Lover, pact bearer to the Arcarum primal beast Death. Born to a family of magicians yet devoid of magical talent herself, Nier was denied and rejected by all of those who were supposed to love her all her life. Driven to desperation, she learned the arts of a forbidden tome and turned to wanton murder and experimentation on innocent men to master it, only to be denied and rejected still even after all her efforts.

Brought to the brink of death, Nier would form a pact with the primal beast Death, and together, they would strive to create a new world that would love and accept them... no matter what.

  • 13 Is Unlucky: In case you fail to notice Nier as the pact bearer of Death, the 13th Major Arcana, Nier starts a battle with 13 Love's Redemption stacks and will die if she has none. Her natural maximum HP is 1313. With all those signs, no wonder the poor girl's life has been a living hell.
    • Originally, Nier’s “Death Reversed” Support Skill allowed the Captain to literally cheat death itself constantly as long as their HP was over 25% and the Captain’s element was Dark. Due to exploits however, this got changed in the September 23, 2020 update, making it so now the Captain can only cheat death a total of 13 times until the support skill can no longer be used.
  • All for Nothing: Despite her best efforts to master the forbidden spell, her family still treats her like trash no matter what. She began using her forbidden magic on living people, becoming a serial killer in the process, but it's heavily implied her family used that as a convenient excuse to dispose of her anyway.
  • Attention Whore: What Nier had become after being spited by her sister, parents and servants. Said thirst for attention later spiraled into a twisted thirst for love.
"Why, why... I worked so hard to get here... You used to praise... I'm here too. Corrie's not the only one... Why won't you give me any attention..."
  • Ax-Crazy: She's a more subdued example compared to Lobelia, but her insanity is definitely there.
  • Badass Adorable: Nier is a cute and beautiful girl who just wants to be loved. She's also a frighteningly ruthless mass murderer who will happily kill for said love.
  • Balancing Death's Books: The "power over life" written in the forbidden tome is treated as a Dangerous Forbidden Technique because it has drawbacks. In order to transfer life to something else, one must take life first from others.
  • Beauty Is Bad: Nier is noted by her younger sister to be attractive in the eyes of men. Corrie also believes that her sister can rely on men for the rest of her life should she be cast out from the family. Nier exploited this to lure men to become her live test subjects.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Her reason for joining the crew. The captain, Lyria and Vyrn are the first people to treat her with kindness despite Nier being who she is.
  • Belated Injury Realization: Nier is so lost in thoughts about hatred that she forgotten about her physical condition. She notices once she stumbles on a pool of blood... only to find out that the blood had been dripping from her injured stomach.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Played with. While that sweet, demure, and fragile girl is a genuine part of her personality, beneath it is a shockingly callous and cold witch who will happily murder anything and anyone that irritates her.
  • Black Sheep: How Nier's family treats her, especially after she mastered the forbidden "power of life"... as it essentially turned her into a murderer, which would bring upon shame to the family if revealed to the public.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: She genuinely believes those who reject her love has no meaning to her, therefore Nier has no qualm turning her ex-boyfriends' lives as test subjects for her Life Drain magic experiments.
  • Blue Blood: She comes from a wealthy family of magicians who even have their own house servants, and a luxury to watch plays. All of their wealth had been passed down through generations.
  • Break the Cutie: Being imprisoned underground and humiliated by her own family serve as the final straw into this woman's transition from a persevering magician to a mass murderer.
  • Breakout Character: She is the most popular Evoker out of all of them, though being extremely useful in Dark teams has boosted her popularity as well. As of 2020, she’s the most crafted Evoker, beating out Alanaan who is usually crafted for his own usefulness in Fire teams. She was the second to only female character to make it into the otherwise male character dominated Valentine’s poll, clocking in at #10 (the only other female character in the results was Vikala at #2) and also the only Evoker to show up among the most starred/perpetuity ringed characters ranking. She also became the first Evoker to be announced as a playable character in Versus for its Rising update.
  • Casting a Shadow: Befitting a Dark character, Nier conjures Death's scythes imbued with Dark magic as weapon in battle. Her Charge Attack also has her summon Death to conjure a pillar of deathly dark energy at the enemy.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Her Love's Redemption stacks mechanic works this way. Using them allows her to cast powerful buffs on her allies, but she only has 13 stacks and will die if she has none of them by the end of the turn.
  • Clothing Damage: Nier's home gown becomes tattered, her hair unkempt and skin covered in bruises while she is locked underground.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: While not easily noticeable, Nier has darker pigmentation on her lower eyelids. This trait also naturally goes along with her being an Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: She and Death subject her family and servants to this, slicing their heads off and cutting them into pieces, but she especially delivers one to Corrie, who not only gets her legs chopped off, but the resulting gorefest in the next shot heavily implies Nier did more than just rip her apart.
  • Cute and Psycho: Nier is very cute and equally murderous.
  • Dark Is Evil: Dark element, check. Dark hair and clothing, check. Associated with Death, check. Tampers with forbidden magic and performed human experiment? Check. Is absolutely murderous with no sense and value of life of people other than her beloved? You better believe that's a check.
  • Damsel in Distress: She allows herself to be cornered by monsters in Sephira so that the protagonist would come to her rescue.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Nier is the only one able to open the forbidden tome hidden in the family archives, which had multiple seals, and contains spells granting the "power over life". The contents aren't exactly that hard to master, it's just that no one was able to even open the tome... until Nier approached it. There is a reason for this too, as the tome would only open for someone who has an unquenchable desire for something, to the point of risking oneself. One of the demonstrated tricks border into Balancing Death's Books.
  • Death-Activated Superpower: Her fourth skill grants her the permanent Eternal Vow buff, which greatly buffs her attack and defense, makes her immune to debuffs, and dishes out a multihit attack after every attack she deals. When she inevitably falls from running out of Love's Redemption, she grants the same buff to Gran/Djeeta.
  • Death Equals Redemption: Subverted. Nier is still pretty evil and murderous after being killed and revived by Death and joining the crew. Though she simply directs her evil tendencies toward people who attempt to harm the Captain and the crew, as the people of her hometown found out the hard way.
  • Death's Hourglass: In the form of her Love's Redemption stacks. She starts with 13 stacks, each turn costs her 2 stacks, and she dies when her stacks is emptied. That said, said stacks provide her with 90% damage reduction passive, so it's difficult for her to die outside of this mechanic.
  • Death Is a Slap on the Wrist: Committed suicide through Death in her Fate episode, that doesn't stick long. Also an enforced gameplay mechanic since you have to use Revive/Autorevive on Nier if you want to keep her alive in longer battles.
  • Depraved Bisexual: While she had many boyfriends in her flashback without any mention of a girlfriend, after making a pact with the female Primal Beast Death, Nier started treating Death as one of her beloved. She also tries to make the captain become her beloved regardless of their gender, making her fit this trope.
  • Difficult, but Awesome:
    • On paper, Nier is a force to reckon with. She can change the battlefield to give the party extra ATK buff and echoes, her 2nd ability allows her to buff herself and another member with 100% triple attack rate and 50% damage reduction to wail on the enemy. Her 3rd ability allows her or another member the ability to use Charge Attack twice, though it's best to use it on Nier herself since her Charge Attack becomes more powerful the less Love's Redemption stacks she has and her EMP comes with TWO Charge Attack cap up nodes to surpass her natural cap. Other than than, Love's Redemption also gives her 90% Damage Reduction, making her extremely durable against normal damage types. However, unless you build your party around her with abilities to revive and/or keep her alive, Nier is actually a Glass Cannon when played without support. Using her skills quickly burns out her stacks, and she loses 2 stacks per turn even if you don't use her skills. Without additional revive or healing, Nier usually only lasts around 5 to 6 turns in the frontline before she dies from having 0 stacks, and her 90% damage reduction won't work against Plain Damage attacks or the Lethal Hit debuff. Her fifth uncap nullifies the skill consumption of Love's Redemption when her unique field is up, and coupled with her field effectively having permanent uptime, this lets Nier stay on the frontline considerably longer.
    • This also applies to her playable appearance in Versus Rising. Nier is a Puppet Fighter who attacks in tandem with Death, with all of her special moves using Death in some fashion. If Death is incapacitated by either getting hit by the opponent or when Nier burns through her stocks of Love's Redemption, she will be forced to fight with no special moves or supers and subpar normals. However, when Death is available, she has among the highest damage and mixup potential of the whole cast, a frame one reversal move with super armor that she can combo out of, and surprisingly good normals when Death is unsummoned but not incapacitated.
  • Dissonant Serenity: She starts acting more gleeful the more she uses her newfound deadly powers, even stating that there's nothing wrong with murder after she fails to see that the spell outright kills people. She even talks to and thanks the recent corpse for its contribution!
  • The Dog Bites Back: She lets Death kill the rest of her family when it's clear to her that her family will never accept her at all. No sympathy is given to them even as Nier mourned at the fact that she wasn't loved.
  • Doomed Hometown: Subjected this on her own hometown through proxy by Death when the people there attempted to harm and injure the Captain. Death killed the whole town in a single night.
  • Dramatic Irony: All Nier wants is someone, anyone to love and accept her unconditionally, to the point of murdering anyone who dares to reject her. What she doesn't seem to realize is that she already has someone who fits those criteria: that being Death herself, but Nier is too focused on Gran/Djeeta and the crew.
  • The Dreaded: Summer Monika's Fate Episode shows that Monika and Lecia are utterly terrified and wary of her due to the power she wields. And for good reason, as she admits the only reason she didn't viciously slaughter the kidnappers on the spot is because of the inconvenience it would cause Gran/Djeeta and the crew.
  • Driven to Suicide: Allows Death to kill her when she decides the world would be better off if she wasn’t alive.
  • Dude Magnet: Nier had a lot of suitors and past boyfriends, a secret which Corrie is aware of and unknown to their parents. As her sister points out, one of the reasons why some men seek Nier is for the chance to be married to Nier's wealthy family.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: She has black hair and ears, and has pale complexion as compared to the other Evokers.
  • Empty Eyes: How the narration describes Nier's expression after the latest boyfriend opened the closet full of corpses. She sports these eyes even when trying to snuggle with the boyfriend, which freaks him out even further. Lampshaded by her journal entry.
The eyes of this vulnerable waif belie a certain inner emptiness. Timid and introverted, she constantly defers to others. This personality could be why darkness never seems more than a step away from her.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: For all her atrocities, Nier's love for her family and desire to be loved by them are genuine. Even after being released from her imprisonment, Nier only blamed her sister Corrie for taking away her parent's love. It took her parents themselves revealing their disdain of her did she decide to completely remove her family from her life. Post recruitment, the crew, and specifically, the Captain, are this to her. The captain being shot at by the people from her hometown is enough for her to order Death to remove every single living person reside there.
  • Every Proper Lady Should Curtsy: She politely curtsies in front of the crew moments before revealing her true colors.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: She just so happens to overhear from her servants that they are planning to neglect their service to Nier in favor of her sister, and that Nier may be cast out in the streets by her parents if she cannot drastically improve her spellcasting abilities.
  • Exploding Closet: Nier stuffs the bodies of her previous boyfriends in a closet to hide the results of her experiments. One unlucky visitor opened it only to find a pile of rotten corpses inside, with the latest victim still alive, recently stuffed.
  • Expy: A quiet girl who is The Unfavorite of the family and seeks for the love and approval of a family member, who had a darker side hidden in them and goes bonkers as they continue on... Also voiced by Noriko Shitaya? That sounds familiar to Sakura Matou... Additional points for having a pact with a powerful being that is loyal to her and wants to see her thrive.
    F-P
  • False Reassurance: Nier's request for the crew was "to save the world", and by accepting it, the crew partake into the war inside the Death card's memory. Later on when she reveals her true colors, the crew asked her was her request of saving the Sky Realm a lie, to which Nier denies that the world she asked them to save was not the Sky Realm in the first place, but the new world she seeks to create together with Death. And in order to do so, the Sky Realm needs to be destroyed first.
"I... I never said a word about saving the Sky Realm... It's the new world we build that will need saving. A world that will love and accept us..."
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Wears an earring only on her left Erune ear. She also has a flower bracelet on her left wrist.
  • Femme Fatale: As Nier became more insane, she intentionally uses her beauty and charms to attract would-be suitors to a secret shed, then later kills them for experimentation.
  • Foil:
    • To Seox of the Eternals.
      • Both have number 6 as their theme (Seox is the Sixth Eternal, while The Lovers Arcarna is the Sixth Arcana).
      • Both are Dark element and brooding Erunes who originated from an extinguished family and eventually killed them due to circumstances. Seox's family was afraid of his genius prowess while Nier's family despised her for lacking talent. However, while Seox lives on with remorse and guilt of having to kill them along with his father who actually loved him, Nier could no longer care less about the family that all hated her. And while Seox killed the rest of his family because there had been members who wanted to kill him and fear him, doing it out of spite before remorse kicks in. Nier is The Unfettered and doesn't care who she kills if it means her parents will love her again.
      • Both got helped from an outsider and turned out different, Seox got helped by the man known as the Primal Slayer (very much implied to be the Captain's father) and turned out better, while Nier got helped by a Primal Beast that embodies Death, giving her the push to become worse.
      • Seox puts on the facade of a hardened and cold-blooded assassin to hide the fear and insecurities beneath his mask, Nier however acts like a troubled and shy Shrinking Violet to hide her murderous tendency and questionable sanity from people she's manipulating.
      • Seox's fate episodes lead him in search for power to protect the people he loves and cares, Nier's journey with Death is all about creating her own world where people love and care for her.
      • Seox actively avoids people, yet as seen in No Rain, No Rainbow, always ended up being surrounded in the merry company of others, and generally have a good and somewhat friendly relationship with other members of the Eternal (enough for Seofon to personally make him a new costume). Nier actively approaches people in search for love, but is always shunned by them for various reasons. And consider the nature of Evokers as a group, Nier remains alone even as part of an organization.
    • To fellow Arcarum Evoker, Fraux. Both of them are Erunes and had a wish to be loved and accepted in the past. However, Nier becomes The Unfettered for the sake of being loved by her parents again, Fraux, meanwhile, gave up on that wish as the event that led to her making a pact with The Devil becomes a Cynicism Catalyst to her.
    • To fellow Arcarum Evoker Maria Theresa. Both came from a distinguished lineage, have been romantically involved with males, have been compared to their sisters whom others saw as superior than them (Nier in terms of magic and Theresa in terms of political dignity), and were locked underground for being inferior. Their respective parents also treat them as The Unfavorite (both for Nier while Theresa is one for her mother). And while the two of them both forged a pact with their respective Arcarum for the sake of escaping the bonds, Theresa never went into a Sanity Slippage unlike Nier.
  • Freudian Excuse: Her reason for becoming a Yandere and a serial killer definitely comes off this way.
  • Freudian Slip: When she tells her recent boyfriend that "nothing else comes out from [the shed]", she immediately backpedals. No one literally comes out from that shed, because they'd all be dead.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: Nier practiced and mastered "power over life" through conducting human experiments. When she's in your sub row, Nier can literally allow the captain to cheat Death, keeping them alive from all sort of instant kill damage as long as they are above 25% HP. Also, her 2nd sub ability buffs the party with the Thirsting buff (granting them damage absoprtion buff and Autorevive.)
  • Good Luck Charm: She made an amulet together with Death as a birthday gift for the Captain. She claims it will remove any harm to the Captain when they put it on.
  • Gratuitous German: Her Charge Attack Name has the German word Totentanz, which means "Dance of the Dead". Her paid outfit version charge attack, Todes Ewigkeit, also means Death Eternity.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She shows signs of envy and jealousy towards her more magically-adept sister when her parents start favoring Corrie more instead of her.
  • Hate Sink: Not her, but her horribly abusive family who deemed her useless at birth, and had always plotted to dispose of her. They suffer an extremely gruesome death at Nier and Death's hands, but it is made clear that they completely deserved it. Her Tales of Arcarum further shows just how evil and despicable they were by denying her food and clothing, and snapping at her if she tried to help out.
  • Healing Hands: She can heal wounds, as part of the "power over life" magic that she discovered. She used this to heal the Captain's shoulder after they took a bullet meant for her.
  • Hidden Depths: Her hobby is writing books, and she enjoys reading and daydreaming. She also has a dislike of magic despite being a mage, given her traumatic past involving it. Surprisingly, Nier is also very crafty with her hand, as she made an amulet together with Death as birthday present for the Captain.
    • Expanding on the writing books hobby, Anila's Yukata version's Fate Episodes shows that Nier can write risque novels if she wants and even admits the one Anila read was one of her tamer ones.
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal: While she didn't voice out her negative opinions towards Corrie at first, Nier finally snapped when Death convinced her to kill Corrie.
Nier: "If only you weren't around... If only you were never born... I could've continued with my happy life... You... YOU BLOODSUCKING LEECH!!!"
  • I Ate WHAT?!: Defied. While she has the marks of a Yandere, her fifth Valentine's event shows that Nier is not the type to mix her hair or blood into her food to bind her loved ones together. Just seeing them enjoy the food she makes is enough to make her happy.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: All she wants is to be loved and accepted. The abuse from her family put her into the deep end and she ended up killing them and their servants with the help of Death. After being rejected by everyone around her, Nier decided to create an ideal world where even someone like her and Death can still be loved and cared for by others.
Please... Look at me... Love me... I'll do anything to make that happen...
  • If I Can't Have You…: She orders Death to kill Gran/Djeeta, Lyria and Vyrn when the captain refused her invitation to come with her to her new world. Thankfully, the Captain has enough battle experience to fend away Death, which left Nier saddened to the point of committing suicide.
  • Image Song: She has one, fittingly titled "Deathbound Love".
  • In Love with Love: Nier is more concerned with being loved by someone than actually loving someone. As long as they appear to love her, Nier wouldn't hesitate to enter relationship with anyone. The moment someone reveal they actually don't love her as much as she thinks they do, Nier first respond is to remove them, regardless of relation.
  • Interspecies Romance: A few of her past boyfriends are human, though they failed to make their romance serious as all of them ended up inside of Nier's closet. Might apply to the captain as well if you interpret letting Nier join the crew as accepting her romantic feelings, and she becomes extremely protective of the captain as the result.
  • It's All About Me: All she cares about is getting unconditional love and attention from other people, and will go as far as killing people if she doesn’t receive it.
  • Jerkass: Beneath her fragile demeanor is a frighteningly cold and cruel girl who has no problem saying some seriously nasty stuff against other people. Many of her versus quotes in Versus Rising capitalize on this greatly.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Her fifth uncap clothes her in an ornate black wedding dress.
  • Kick the Dog: Her callous murder of her numerous lovers is definitely this, as from what is shown, none of them show any traits of actual malice, only genuine shock and horror once they discover Nier's crimes.
  • Lack of Empathy: Comes with the territory of being a Yandere. Downplayed when Nier murdered her family after her release, as she mourned their death and lamented about how things turned out despite her simple desire of wanting to be loved by them. Played straight with her ex-boyfriends and the people from her hometown anyway.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: After being "killed" by Death, Nier loses all her memories, including her name and her meeting with the crew. She recovers them after reuniting with Death and reforging their pact.
  • Licked by the Dog: In her Tales of Arcarum a little girl and her dog are fond of Nier for saving their lives. They are completely unaware that she has killed multiple people including their abusive foster parents.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: The Captain, and the crew to a lesser extent, is this to Nier post-recruitment, and she changed her goal from creating a new world to finding acceptance in the current world together with the crew. Harming them is not a very wise move, as it would cause not only the death of the perpetrators, but also the people who are unlucky enough to live in the same town.
  • Lonely Together: Her relationship with the Primal Beast Death is basically this. Lyria notes that Nier's attempt to remove anyone who doesn't love her will leave her and Death alone in their new world.
  • Love Hungry: Her most defining trait. Nier craves to be loved and accepted, willing to do evil things in order to get them. Lampshaded by her own buff effect, called Thirsting.
  • Love Hurts: Her desire for love and the things she'd do for it has brought her more pain that good, being rejected by the Captain is enough to make her commit suicide. Lyria said her desire to remove the people who deny her love from the world will eventually leave her and Death alone in their new world.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: Nier was a simple girl content with life until her younger and more talented sister was born, taking away the love of Nier's parents from her. Then it got worse from there. And as of her fifth uncap, she becomes even WORSE than that.
  • Love Makes You Evil: Nier's desire for love and acceptance makes her spiralling down from practicing magic from forbidden tomes, committing human experiments and murders until she snaps and kills her entire family and servants (they deserve it though). After that, she manipulates the crew into helping her create her new world (which entails The End of the World as We Know It), and commits suicide when she fails to make the captain comply.
  • Love Redeems: Her stack system is called Love's Redemption, implying she's this post recruitment after being accepted into the crew by the Captain. In reality, she's just as twisted as she was before recruitment. She just changes targets to those who harm the Captain and the crew instead.
  • Meaningful Echo: Prior to the 5th Anniversary update, Death's "Please... won't... anyone... love.. me..." implies that something is strange with the Primal Beast. With the inclusion of the Evokers' episodes, it is revealed that the phrase actually originated from Nier's almost last-words just before she forms a pact with Death.
  • Meaningful Name: Nier is French for "Deny". Her parents named her that way because they deemed her useless since birth. Her whole existence is practically being denied love by others.
  • Mundane Utility: As revealed in Grand Blues strip #1396, she can use her magic of life manipulation to grow back people's hair, as demonstrated on Dante, who is initially bald.
  • Mutual Disadvantage: If Nier dies in any other way aside from her Love's Redemption stacks running out, she inflicts the Unfinished Business debuff on both party and foe, sharply debuffing their Defense and multiattack rate.
  • Not Good with Rejection: Her listed dislike is rejection, which definitely explains why she is a Yandere. Nier initially feared the idea of being cast out by her family, then it gets worse from there.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil:
    • Nier brutally slaughters her entire family and her servants, but given how horrifically evil and abusive they've been to her, they completely and utterly deserved every single bit of pain that was coming to them. Her fifth uncap episode has her slaughter illusions of them once she manages to awaken to her new power, something which she takes utter glee in doing so.
Nier: What a surprise to hear a fake say the exact same thing as the real one... But don't bother begging for your life. Because I'm going to end you along with The World.
    • In her Tales of Arcarum, Nier brutally executes the abusive foster parents of a little girl after they nearly murder the girl and her dog in her presence. Like her evil family, they were pathetic excuses of garbage who completely deserved it.
  • Pet the Dog: A literal example is shown in her Tales of Arcarum when she heals the wounds of an abused little girl. She would later heal the same girl again as well as her dog after her foster parents seemingly beat her to death... after killing both of her abusive foster parents of course.
  • Prayer Pose: Her default pose in her initial and NPC artworks.
    R-Y
  • Rage Breaking Point: Her family outright ordering her to be killed while mocking her as a failure one last time causes Nier to completely lose her shit and summon an equally pissed off Death to exact unholy retribution.
Nier: A failure... you must be referring to yourselves? I always wanted to believe... that you'd love me... you'd accept me... Maybe it was too much to ask... I did what I could... I only wanted you to accept me. That's why I took up that tome... why I studied those spells... and I transcribed every last word in the tome in the hopes that it'd get you all to love me... But no... you still reject me... You're no different from those bad men who'd whisper sweet nothings in my ear... If you won't love me... accept me... then I don't need you anymore... Anyone and everyone who shuns me CAN JUST GO AWAY!!!
Death: (after killing one of the servants) How sad... So sad... Don't cry, my beloved... I'm here to take away all your pain.
  • Reality Warper: Only for a short while, but her first ability - World of Death and Love - transforms the battleground into her ideal world for 3 turns, granting her and the whole party extra Bonus Damage. Her fifth uncap extends the duration to 6 turns, effectively making its uptime permanent.
  • Sanity Slippage: The more Nier experiments on the forbidden power over life, the more she loses her sanity, to the point that she no longer values life itself, even killing her numerous suitors and boyfriends for the sake of the experiment and stuffing their corpses in her closet. All of this for the sake of her wish to be loved by her parents once more.
"Ah... There was that fellow who tossed me away like a ragdoll... Who cares what might happen to him... Ehehehe... It won't be a problem. I have to do this... or I'll never know love again... Ahahaha! Wait for me, Father, Mother!"
  • Screaming Warrior: Nier practically shrieks when performing her auto-attacks.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Aside from killing her own parents, Nier even commands Death to eliminate her sister and their family servants.
  • Serial Killer: An unintentional one since her goal is simply finding test subjects for furthering her research instead of depriving pleasure from them like Lobelia, though her modus operandi is similar to one: Seduce a man, lure him to her hideout and kill/experiment on him and hide the body in her closet. After being revived by Death from her suicide, the amnesiac Nier wanders at night, approaches men and asks them to accept and love her. When they refuse, she inflicts bodily harm on them. She scares and creeps out the town guards to the point they have to call for the Captain's help.
"I don't need you anymore if you can't love me."
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: Like with the Erunes, Nier's home gown is backless and exposes her hips. Downplayed with her Evoker outfit, as her back is mostly covered by her Evoker robe, making her one of the more conservatively dressed Erune.
  • Shout-Out: Her name is one to Nier. The Primal Beast she has a pact with, Death, also shares visual similarities (and a love-obsessed personality) to Simone. Probably intentional, since according to an interview, NieR: Automata is among producer Kimura's favourite games of 2017.
  • Shrinking Violet: Introduces herself as such to the captain, Lyria and Vyrn. Her journal entry also described her as "Timid and introverted, she constantly defers to others".
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Nier's Shrinking Violet disposition helps to hide her true nature from the crew as potentially one of the most unscrupulous and twisted playable characters in the game, who's not above killing innocent people and villages and will not let anyone, even a powerful Primal Beast like The Inchoate World, get into the way of her goals or harming her beloved.
  • Skyward Scream: When Nier learns that she was deemed useless from the start, the shock of the revelation causes her to let out what is quite easily, THE most horrifying scream in the game.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Nier and Corrie resemble each other physically, aside from Corrie having twin-tails.
  • Supreme Chef: Her Tales of Arcarum shows that Nier is quite the accomplished cook. Unfortunately, this was because her family and servants outright refused to serve her any food, forcing her to learn how to cook to feed herself. She does admit she's happy to have learned however, as she can make Gran/Djeeta, Lyria, and Vyrn happy with it.
  • Teens Are Monsters: Nier is a terrifyingly ruthless Serial Killer. She's also only 17 years old.
  • There Can Be Only One: She unintentionally evokes this in her backstory. After Nier created a copy of the forbidden tome, Corrie was able to easily master the power. By slaughtering every last one of her family, Nier ends up ensuring that only she is the one who gets to use the tome's power.
  • The Power of Love: A darker take. Nier's desire for love resonates so strong with Death's own desire it enables her to draw a lot of strength from the primal beast, letting her manifests their vision of an ideal world, World of Death and Love, into reality through her first ability. It's a cold and lonely world devoid of any life.
  • The Starscream: Nier and Death both dutifully fulfill their mission to help create a new world as The Inchoate World envisioned, they however hold no personal loyalty to him and only work together because of their common goal. When Lyria revealed to Nier about how The Inchoate World only wants the captain, Lyria and Vyrn in his ideal world, Nier replied she's not afraid to go against him should he double-cross her and Death. As Nier revealed, Death was created without the same restrictions as other Arcarum Primal Beasts, so she can disobey The Inchoate World should the need arise, and as the Primal Beast that governs death, is fully capable of killing him.
Nier: "If the World should ever get in our way... and deny our existence..."
Death: "I'll show him the meaning of "Death"..."
  • The Un Favourite: She used to be showered with praise from her parents. But when her younger sister Corrie was born, all of the attention was drifted away from Nier in favor of Corrie who is a far more talented spellcaster than her sister. In fact, their servants purposely favor Corrie too, expecting better treatment from their masters in return. It turns out, all of the praises Nier received before from her parents were fake, as they deemed her a useless magician from the start.
  • The Unfettered: She will stop at nothing to desire love and affection from others. This also led to her descent in being a Yandere. All she wanted was to be praised by her parents again. And knowing that magic talent is what they prioritize, she even goes as far as learning a Dangerous Forbidden Technique that Corrie has never mastered yet.
  • Tragic Villain: Nier is, at her very core, an extremely broken, sad, and traumatized girl who only ever wanted to be loved and accepted by her family and others. Unfortunately, her family were monsters who never loved her and always wanted to dispose of her, leading her down her dark, twisted path to the murderous psycho she is today.
  • Trauma Button: As shown in Tales of Arcarum, seeing Abusive Parents plotting to dispose of their child causes Nier to relive her traumatic past, freaking her out and pissing her off enough to summon Death to remove the problem immediately.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Become this should you recruit her into the crew. Her seasonal lines make it clear she will not let any harm befalling on the captain, and will go full Yandere on anyone who wish to do so. Near the end of her Recruitment Fate Episode, she used Death to wipe out her whole hometown in a single night because the people there had harmed and injured the Captain to near death.
  • We Can Rule Together: Nier extends a welcome hand asking the crew to come to the new world with her. The Captain refuses, causing Nier to order Death to attack them.
  • Wham Line:
    • Nier is on the receiving end of these lines twice, as she learns of the revelation that her family never actually loved her. The narration even outright calls the second example as a "shocking" line to her.
Father: I'm starting to wonder if you really are my daughter.
Corrie: What I want to say is even if we do cast her out, I'm sure she will manage just fine!
    • She said another one herself after being accepted by Lyria as a friend and becoming a crew member of the Grandcypher
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Sweet mother of Bahamut, is she ever.
"Are you... going to deny my existence too? As if... I don't belong in this world? Then I don't need you... Nuh-uh... Anyone and everyone who shuns me can just go away.. This entire world can just disappear!"
  • Yandere:
    • As shown in her fate episodes, she has a closet full of ex-boyfriends. She also doesn't take rejections well, as her ex-boyfriends and the captain found out. When the captain rejected her love and defeated Death's attempt on their life, she committed suicide by ordering Death to kill her. Fittingly, her weapon proficiencies are daggers and axes.
    • Nier's fifth uncap ramps up her yandere tendencies up to eleven, best shown in her level 100 fate episode that has three bad endings that can occur if you pick the wrong choices, and all but one of them involve a gruesome death at her hands.
  • You Are Not Alone: The captain, Lyria and Vyrn offer Nier to join the crew in search for a way to be loved and accepted, instead of continuing her self-destructive way and create a lonely world with just her and Death. It works to get her to join the crew but not enough to completely reform her from her dark nature.
Nier: So please... Keep me close... And don't let go.. I never want to be alone again...
Lyria: That won't happen as long as we're around, Nier! We'll be friends forever!
    Nier: Friends forever...
  • You Are What You Hate: One of her side-scrolling segment quotes has Nier reveal her dislike of magic despite being a magician herself. Considering her own lack of magical aptitude was the spark of her tragedy, it's pretty understandable.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Nier ends up on the receiving end of this from her family after creating a copy of the forbidden tome. While her crimes were exposed, it's all but outright stated that it was merely an excuse her family used to get rid of her.
  • You Monster!: Gets called out as such by her recent boyfriend/victim upon learning her dark secrets.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Once her Love's Redemption stacks are depleted, Nier will be automatically knocked out.
