A music video is a short film that is played to music, often for promotional or artistic reasons. Although they had been commonly used as a promotional tool in The '60s and The '70s, and really took off in The '80s with the advent of MTV, there are several predecessors to the medium, with experimental films and talkies dating back to the 1920s, including Lee de Forest's Phonofilms, Warner Bros. Vitaphone shorts and Fleischer Studios' Song Car-Tunes.
