     Akane Taira
Akane Taira

Ultimate Maid / Ultimate Despair

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/danganronpa_another___akane_taira_character_illustration_3.jpg

Akane is a friendly girl who is able to lighten the atmosphere. Even though she is working as a maid, she takes great pride in her job and dislikes being compared to "part-timers who work in a maid cafe". While she can be scary when she's angry, Akane is genuinely a cheerful, kind, and caring person.

At the end of the 5th trial, Akane is revealed to be a member of Ultimate Despair who is working alongside the mastermind. She ends up dying in the final trial while protecting Rei.

  • Accidental Murder: Subverted. She feared she accidentally killed Kizuna in self-defense by stabbing her in the stomach, but it turns out Kizuna was still alive and that she was actually killed by Ayame.
  • Attempted Suicide: Her below Heroic BSoD culminates in her trying to slit her wrists with the a pair of scissors, only to be stopped by Mikako reminding her that Ayame died to save her and that her last words was to tell her to live.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's arguably the nicest of the students, yet she's also the most critical of Tsurugi's leadership after Chapter 2, even giving him a Bitch Slap.
  • Bitch Slap: Gives one to Tsurugi in Chapter 2 after he confirms he has no intention of protecting Rei, Kizuna and Kinji for not wanting to follow him, followed by a "Reason You Suck" Speech about how quick he is to give up on people and assume the worst because of his Black-and-White Insanity. This actually leaves him at a loss for words at first before he regains his composure.
  • Blatant Lies: To cover up her meeting and potential murder of Kizuna, she claims that she was in the kitchen preparing tomorrow's breakfast. This however creates a contradiction since, if she was in the kitchen and didn't see anyone, no one could have gotten the knife. In reality, Kizuna was the one who grabbed the knife and, after she stabbed her in self-defense, she went to wash off the blood before the body was discovered.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She lost her parents at an early age and grew up in an orphanage. When the orphanage shut down, she took up a job as maid, but could not afford housing or an education because of her low payment. Later revelations explain that the orphanage that she was from was one that would physically and emotionally abuse the children there.
  • Deuteragonist: She serves as this to Yuki's protagonist.
  • Disappointed in You: Her reaction to Yuki crossing the Despair Event Horizon and giving a speech about how pointless it is to find a way, coming close to slapping before stopping and running off in angry tears, saying she at least expected him to not give up so easily. She does later regret this however, acknowledging that Yuki is still only human and apologizes for her words to him.
  • Does Not Like Men: A downplayed example. She's fine with boys her age, she just doesn't like older men. They're listed as one of her dislikes. It probably has something to do with her job as a maid or her abusive childhood.
  • Do You Trust Me?: Despite pledging her loyalty to him, Utsuro would constantly question Akane if she was truly committed to the despair agenda.
  • The Dragon: She admits to being only a member of Ultimate Despair working for the mastermind that is Utsuro.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: For a majority of the game, Akane's hair is kept nice and tidy. When her true personality as an Ultimate Despair is revealed, she lets her hair loose revealing it to be longer and wilder.
  • Expy: When she's revealed as a member of Ultimate Despair, her personality drastically changes, making her akin to Junko Enoshima.
  • The Heart: She's a constant source of positivity in the group. With her Heroic BSoD in Chapter 3, the general mood among the students is brought down, and her finally snapping out of it raises everyone's spirits.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After Utsuro decides to kill the remaining survivors after they each fell into despair, Akane steps in to stop the Monokumas from hurting them. Utsuro accuses her of feeling sympathy for them and she neither confirms nor denies it.
  • Heroic BSoD: Suffers one after Ayame is executed, which gets worse when Tsurugi claims the whole thing is her fault and tells her to kill herself. She ends up spending the first day of Chapter 3 in her room, and when she finally comes out she has Dull Eyes of Unhappiness and won't say anything except Ayame's name.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: In one of her free time events, she reveals she's grown tired of being a famous maid with rumors about her being flawless and perfect, and what she wants most of all is to be a normal girl who goes to a normal school with normal friends.
  • The Load: Sees herself as this in regards to escaping the school, with her talent being unsuited to the circumstances, so after she breaks out of her Heroic BSoD from Ayame's death she resolves to be The Heart.
  • Love Martyr: Knows what Utsuro is doing is completely wrong, but is ultimately willing to do whatever he wishes because he's the one who saved her.
  • Luminescent Blush: When she has to don sleek, form-fitting dress for Monokuma's party in Chapter 4, she's sporting a notable blush, claiming she's not used to clothes like this. She sports it again when she, under threat of Monokuma, asks Yuki to dance with her.
  • Madness Mantra: After Ayame's execution and Tsurugi's Kick the Dog moment aimed at her, all she can do is repeatedly say "I'm sorry."
  • Meido: She works as a maid and is quite friendly.
  • Ms. Exposition: She openly reveals the history of The Tragedy along with what really happened to the 79th class along with Utsuro's powers during the final trial.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Suffered this some time after she called out Yuki for crossing the Despair Event Horizon, recognizing that despite his optimism compared to the others, he's still only human, apologizing for it while the two dance together in Chapter 4.
  • Nice Girl: She's always cheerful, helpful, and is the most empathetic in the group, being the one suggest trying to convince Kizuna to rejoin the group after she and Yuki discover her crying.
  • The Pollyanna: Despite the hardships she faced in the past, Akane still remains cheerful and does her best to endure any problems. This completely falls apart on her regaining her true memories, showing her to be an emotionally damaged individual.
  • Redemption Equals Death: In the final trial, Akane ends up gaining a sense of hope after listening to her classmates fight for their lives. When Utsuro has Monokuma attack them, she jumps in front of the attack and receives a devastating wound.
  • Self-Harm: She cuts her wrists with a pair of scissors in Chapter 3.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: In Chapter 4, she gives a subdued one to Tsurugi when he tries to pick on her again, stating that while she acknowledges that what she did was wrong, she's going to keep on living to honor Ayame's sacrifice and is going to try her best to help the others.
  • Spanner in the Works: She foils Kinji's attempt at a Frame-Up on Kanata because she attempted to open the science lab door, which was locked while Kanata was supposedly commiting her crime.
  • Take Me Instead: Attempts to invoke this in Chapter 2, asking Monokuma to execute her instead of Ayame since the whole thing was her fault. It doesn't work.
  • Undying Loyalty: Despite not being personally invested in the goals of Ultimate Despair, she acts as a member out of loyalty to Utsuro for saving her in the past.
  • Unholy Matrimony: It's heavily suggested that Utsuro returns her affections to the extent he can, and he certainly doesn't hold her Pet the Dog moment against her.
  • Unnecessary Combat Roll: After revealing her true personality, Akane as a tendency to do somersaults when meeting with her classmates or exiting a room.
  • Unreliable Expositor: Due to the false memories that she's been given upon entering the Killing Game, a large amount of exposition that she gives about her past in her Free Time Events is either outright false, or missing details. These details mostly involve her experience that she received at the orphanage she grew up in, and what she knows about Utsuro, the person who saved her.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Undergoes this in the Bad Ending of the Chapter 6 trial, when Yuki regains his memories as Utsuro, but keeps his personality intact, ultimately preventing Utsuro's personality from resurfacing.

     Ayame Hatano
Ayame Hatano

Ultimate Sprinter

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/danganronpa_another___ayame_hatano_character_illustration.jpg

Ayame is a stoic and strong-willed person. Although she appears to be perfectly calm in most situations, she admits that she can be awkward especially during conversations, and as a result, she has a tendency to ramble and wander off in her own, or not talk much at all.

She is the culprit of Chapter 2, finishing off an already wounded Kizuna.

  • Best Friend: Quickly becomes this with Akane. This devastates Akane when she's revealed as the culprit in Case 2.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Subverted. She tries to make herself look like one after the trial so everyone will feel less guilty about executing her, but Mikako sees through it due to her deliberate leg injury.
  • Booby Trap: During the investigation of Kizuna's murder, she falls victim to a razor wire trap that cuts her thigh. It turns out it was set up by her as part of a Wounded Gazelle Gambit.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Strapped into a Monokuma bot that moves at high speeds and jumps to iminitate her talent, she goes through a track course while being chased by a grinding machine, and gets cuts in half when the finish line turn out to be a razor, before the grinder catches up and destroys her remains.
  • Face Death with Dignity: After she's found out and explains everything, she's happy that she was able to save Akane and faces her execution peacefully, asking Akane to live.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Is bisected when the vehicle she's strapped into reaches the finish line towards the end of her execution.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Her Wounded Gazelle Gambit gets outed by the back of her thigh getting cut to make the wound more grievous, when she was walking towards to trap, which realistically should have cut the front of her leg.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: Cites this as why she finished off Kizuna, since even if she did rush to get help, it's very likely that Kizuna would have died from her stomach wound by the time she got back and that Akane would become the Blackened as a result. With that in mind, she felt that the only way to prevent Akane from becoming the Blackened was to to become it herself.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: Downplayed. She loves her talent but she isn't one to express it with the other students. She's the most excited of the students when they find a training room after the first trial, though she gets embarrassed when she gushes about it to Yuki.
  • Shrinking Violet: She has a hard time interacting with her classmates.
  • Taking the Bullet: She finishes off Kizuna in order to save Akane from becoming the blackened.
  • Tomboy: She looks and dresses as one.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Subverted. As part of her plan to save Akane, Ayame cripples her own leg, initially seeming like she set it up to make it look like she wasn't the culprit. However, she admits that if she'd escaped, she would've considered never running again fitting a punishment for committing murder.
  • Zero-Approval Gambit: Attempts to pull this after the trial, claiming she'd been Evil All Along. Mikako sees through it easily though.

     Kanata Inori
Kanata Inori

Ultimate Surgeon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/danganronpa_another___kanata_inori_character_illustration.jpg

Kanata is a kindhearted girl who wishes nothing more than the comfort of her patients and everyone else around her. Exceedingly formal and polite, she addresses her classmates using the prefix "Mr." or "Ms.", a habit she picked up back at the hospital. She also claims that she can treat one's injuries better than a school nurse.

She is the second victim of Chapter 3, where Kinji kills her by electrocuting her in a pool of water.

  • All-Loving Hero: She has a huge heart and is willing to take a moment to help anyone in need.
  • The Coroner: Serves as this, ensuring the other students know that the Monokuma files are accurate.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Left tied up in a body of water and electrocuted to the point that her body and even her internal organs were severely burned. The sight of it is so gruesome that Yuki vomits and Mikako looks extremely shocked.
  • Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: Downplayed in Case 2, considering the Blackened's intentions. She's quick to jump to Ayame's defense when she starts being outed as the Blackened, unable to comprehend that she'd go as far as to potentially cripple herself. Yuki retorts that the culprit wanted them to think that.
  • Happily Adopted: She lost her parents in a car accident and was adopted by a kind doctor who raised and treated her like if she was his own.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: She has this dynamic with Kakeru.
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: Being a surgeon, she goes around wearing one. In Chapter 3, it's used to clean the art room of the blood that resulted from Kakeru's near-beheading.
  • Little Miss Badass: Somewhat Subverted. During her free time events, she reveals members of two rival Yakuza gangs once arrived in the emergency room after a gang war and nearly got the doctors wrapped up in the middle of a knife fight. Kanata decided to hit one of their leaders on the head, which got everyone to calm down and listen to her. Yuki notes that her punches don't even hurt and he guesses the yakuza were more dumbfounded than anything, but he's still surprised to learn she was prepared to fight them.
  • The Medic: Fills this role as she's the most knowledgeable regarding the medical field.
  • Nice Girl: One of the nicer girls among the cast. While she's a part of the new group isolating him, she, along with Satsuki, seems to be the only one willing to believe in Yuki, apologizing for not being able to convince them to give him a chance.
  • Recurring Element: As tradition for most DR installments, Kanata is the Token Mini-Moe of the cast.
  • Ship Tease: Gets a little with Yuki in her free time events, hoping she can be the person he thinks of when he gets nervous.
  • Workaholic: Spends most of her time at the hospital and reads patient reports in her free time. Yuki's surprised to hear she never really takes breaks.

     Kiyoka Maki
Kiyoka Maki

Ultimate Sniper

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/danganronpa_another___kiyoka_maki_character_illustration.jpg

Kiyoka is a carefree and outgoing girl. Even though she displays exceptional skills in using guns and darts, she actually dislikes her talent and just wants to be a "normal" high school girl, hence the reason why she is more interested in feminine things such as fashion and cosmetics. Kiyoka has a habit of not thinking before she speaks, and because of this, she can offend others (often unintentionally) and lead her to trouble. She is also a bit light-minded and tends to joke around even during tense situations.

She is the victim of Chapter 1. Mitsuhiro bashes her head with a hammer and makes it look as if she committed suicide by hanging.

  • Action Girl: Kiyoka gets to show her action side while defending her friends and classmates from the Monokuma drones.
  • Berserker Tears: She gets these during her final stand against the Monokuma raid at the Kisaragi Foundation.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Believe it or not, this Dumb Blonde with the inability to concentrate and laziness problems was the one who hindered Utsuro's plan the most before they had their memories erased. The Ultimate Sniper title isn't just for decoration.
  • Defiant to the End: Kiyoka ends up being the last line of defense as Utsuro and the Monokumas take over the Kisaragi Foundation.
  • Dumb Blonde: She comes across this at times.
  • Expy: Believe it or not, she brings to mind Mukuro Ikusaba. They're both introduced as blonde girly girls who end up revealing to have a militaristic themed talent. Unfortunately, she also ends up dying in the first chapter like Mukuro.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Averted. Maki is probably the most focused victim after being killed, with much of her backstory being revealed after she died. It's intentional, as Linuj didn't think it was fair to her to be forgotten being the first victim who died in vain.
  • Friendly Sniper: In contrast with her talent, she's usually very friendly and cheerful.
  • Girls with Guns: During The Tragedy, Kiyoka would wield Yamato's super charged rifle to fend off the Monokuma drones.
  • Girly Girl: She isn't very interested in guns and prefers things like fashion and cosmetics.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She has blonde hair and has a good heart to match.
  • He Knows Too Much: While his original target was Tsurugi, Mitch was forced to switch to Kiyoka after the note confusion since she could have potentially outed him to the other students.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Just like her bio states, she wants to live life like a normal girl instead of being a professional sniper.
  • Irony: She ends up being killed by Mitsuhiro Higa, the boy who sacrificed himself so she could escape the monokumas.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: By her own admission, she has a habit of speaking without thinking.
  • Posthumous Character: Much of what we know about her and her development is only showed to us after she dies on chapter 1.
  • Red Herring: An interesting subversion, despite being the first victim Maki was never written to seem more important than she actually was, and many of the clues that led fans to believe she was the mastermind (like her birthday being the same as the despair sisters) were just an accidental coincidence.
  • Sacrificial Lion: The last of her classmates to be captured by Utsuro after fighting bravely, she ends up being the first to die.
  • Ship Tease: She had Unresolved Sexual Tension with Mitsuhiro before they lost their memories, where he even sacrifices himself to prevent her from being caught by the Monokumas. Ironically, he ends up being the one who kills her.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: With Higa, he tries to flirt with her and she reciprocates the feeling although she don't admit, with Kizuna comparing the two to a romantic comedy and him sacrificing himself so that she wouldn't be caught by the Monokumas. Unfortunately, both of their memories were erased and both were the first death in the game.

     Kizuna Tomori
Kizuna Tomori

Ultimate Cheerleader

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/danganronpa_another___kizuna_tomori_character_illustration.jpg

Kizuna is an extremely confident and motivated person, which is also a key to her becoming a cheerleader. Mostly because of her energized and cheerful behavior, she likes to encourage others to be as lively as her, but she can also be overly casual and pushy towards people she has only just met.

She is the victim of Chapter 2, having tried to kill Akane, only to get stabbed instead. She was shortly after finished off by Ayame.

  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: During her final free time event, Kizuna suddenly tries to get Yuki to sleep with her. He doesn't and she's baffled why he, out of all the guys she's ever met, doesn't like her back. Yuki talks her out of it quickly though.
  • Asshole Victim: Akane at least seems to see her as this, since she attempted to persuade her into helping kill Yuki because he apparently knew the Mastermind's identity and tried to kill her when she refused because She Knows Too Much, during which she admits that she was ready to kill someone since day 2.
  • The Atoner: After being stabbed by Akane, she writes the word 'MAID' so the others can know it was her who killed her. But when Ayame arrives to finish the job, Kizuna repents and changes the message to "MAID X" meaning "not the maid".
  • Beneath the Mask: She tries putting up a snarky and rude front in front of the others after she leaves the group, but Yuki and Akane discover her crying the evening after the secrets motive is revealed, bemoaning how she's alone. She may have been faking this.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: She's a Genki Girl cheerleader with No Sense of Personal Space but, after everyone sees their motive videos in Chapter 1, she's the first to seriously consider murder when everyone contemplates how to escape. She also becomes extremely aggressive during the trial for Kiyoka's death.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She's friendly and cheerful on the surface, but she shows off her selfish and spiteful personality during the first trial. And if that wasn't enough, she instantly concocted an elaborate murder plan right after the first trial was finished.
    • Deconstructed in her free time events. Kizuna grew up surrounded by guys who only ever cared about her looks, so she decided to use them to her advantage. This allowed her to get pretty much anything she wanted, but it also meant she had no close friends or even a real boyfriend, so she had no one to open to and could never really be herself out of fear of being seen as weak. She also really distrusts any guys who didn't like her back.
  • Couldn't Find a Pen: After she's stabbed, she attempts to write "maid" (meido) in katakana to indict Akane, but corrects it after Ayame comes in and finishes the job, placing an "X" next to it to draw suspicion away from Akane.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Despite being the victim, her death is particularly brutal; stabbed in the stomach and then the throat, yet she was still alive for another thirty minutes. Kanata notes that her death must have been agonizing.
  • Expy: She brings to mind Sayaka Maizono as she too is a cheerful girl who performs for large audiences. And just like the idol herself, her plan to commit murder backfires with her becoming a victim and leaving a dying message for the others to find.
  • Facial Markings: She has a star on her cheek.
  • Genki Girl: She's full of energy and tries to encourage others to be as energetic as her.
  • Gold Digger: Chapter 0 reveals that she has a greedy side and would frequently extort money from her male classmates so she could buy expensive things for herself.
  • Hypocrite: When Teruya once again clarifies that he didn't kill Kiyoka, she quips that it's making him look more suspicious, only for Haruhiko to point out that her earlier response to the girls being suspected was also pretty suspicious.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Despite the I Work Alone attitude she takes after Chapter 1, she's discovered crying to herself about how lonely she feels. However, this may have been a lie.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: A retroactive example, but her decision to target Yuki as her potential victim after finding his secret, as well as Akane when she refused to help, was actually right on the money. Had she managed it, she might've been able to end the Killing Game.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Once we meet her mother, we find that the two share a lot of characteristics.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: She really likes getting close to Yuki.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: She's the next to leave after Rei and Kinji after Tsurugi's leadership change, desiring her freedom more like Kinji.

     Mikako Kurokawa
Mikako Kurokawa

Ultimate Exorcist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/danganronpa_another___mikako_kurokawa_character_illustration.jpg

Mikako is a quiet person, meaning she does not talk very much. She is unresponsive in a conversation and avoids making eye contact with anyone she talks to, giving her an impression of an unfriendly student to most of her classmates. Despite this, her expertise on the paranormal allows her to sense danger and promptly prevent it from happening, or at least remedy the situation. She can also see through one's "inner demons", which is very evident for her talent.

She is framed by Monokuma in Chapter 5 for killing her childhood friend Yamato. Before facing her execution, she dies from brain damage through attempting to resist the side effects of the memory retention device.

  • And I Must Scream: Before the killing game began, Mikako found a way to retain her memories using Yamato's machine. Unfortunately, one of the side effects involve massive migraines that made it difficult for her to speak or interact with others.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: Decides to communicate with her classmates and die from the effects of further brain damage before she's subjected to execution.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When everyone seems close to voting Akane as the culprit in Case 2 due to the revelation of the dying message, Mikako interjects and points out that the issue of Ayame's injury.
  • Childhood Friends: She's revealed to be this with Yamato.
  • Connected All Along: Chapter 0 of Super Danganronpa Another 2 reveals that Mikako is the estranged daughter of Kokoro Mitsume.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She has a gloomy and sketchy appearance but she does mean well.
  • Desecrating the Dead: Even after she dies from brain damage, Monokuma insists on having her executed just for the sake of following the trial rules.
  • The Determinator: Before her personality was altered, Mikako is shown to have a confident and defiant spirit. She wasn't afraid to speak up against anything that was wrong and always maintained hope.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: She has black hair and pale skin.
  • The Empath: She can read emotions fairly well and knows when someone is troubled.
  • Exhausted Eyebags: She has big black bags under her eyes, adding to her gloomy appearance. They mostly likely stem from her repeated migraines from the memory retention device.
  • Expy: She ends up one for Kyoko Kirigiri, being the Stoic yet intelligent member of the cast who acts as a Mentor of sorts in solving cases, but is hiding a bunch of secrets that she can't tell the others, which causes The Rival to suspect her of working for the mastermind.
  • Frame-Up: In Chapter 5, she's set up as Yamato's killer.
  • The Leader: She, surprisingly enough, appears to take this role among the student after they decide to stop following Tsurugi. She organizes everyone, including Tsurugi, Yuki, Rei and Kinji, to come together to share their findings.
  • No Social Skills: She has a hard time bonding with the other students.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Her quiet nature works against her case 2 when she arrives late to the Class Trial, something the others, namely Tsurugi, finds suspicious. In actuality, as she reveals to Yuki to elevator ride, she was checking the kitchen and found the knife used to stab Kizuna came from there.
  • Not So Stoic:
    • Upon seeing Yamato's graduation album, she actually displays shock for the first time.
    • She also appears surprised after Akane screams and runs off after the Chapter 3 motive announcement.
    • Her expression when she's told that Kanata, Kakeru, Kinji, Tsurugi and Rei haven't arrived for breakfast in Chapter 3 just screams "Oh, Crap!".
    • She lets out an uncharacteristic "Eek!" when Monokuma suddenly jumps back to life after being silent in Case 3.
    • She actually raises her voice to talk Yuki, Teruya and Haruhiko out of crossing the Despair Event Horizon and spending the rest of their lives in the academy, pleading for them to keep trying to escape.
    • She loses her cool during the events of the 5th trial where she desperately claims to not be Yamato's killer.
    • As shown in Chapter 0, Mikako used to be a lot more cheerful and interactive before the events of the killing game.
  • The Quiet One: She hardly says a word. Much like her muted emotions, this is one of the side effects of using the memory retention device.
  • Throwing Off the Disability: At the end of the fifth trial, she shows her emotions and communicates normally with her classmates. Unfortunately, the final trial reveals powering through the side effects of the memory retention device to accomplish this is what ended up causing the further brain damage that ended up killing her.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Before The Tragedy began, she realized that her friend Yamato was keeping secrets from her. After he brushes off her concerns like no big deal, she slaps her and runs away crying.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Is the one to finally snap Akane out of her Heroic BSoD by reminding her of Ayame's last words, and telling her that she deserves to live.]

     Rei Mekaru
Rei Mekaru

Ultimate Professor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/danganronpa_another___rei_mekaru_character_illustration.jpg

Befitting of her occupation as a professor, Rei acts mature and professionally most of the time, making her seem cold and look older than she really is. She absolutely dislikes having her time wasted, so she always gets to the point quickly and speaks in a blunt manner. She can also be condescending towards others, refusing to converse with people she does not find worth to talk to.

She is one of the three survivors of the Killing Game.

  • Academic Alpha Bitch: The Ultimate Professor, and is definitely the biggest Jerkass among the students.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: She's nothing short of amused about how Tsurugi, after he tried to force the others to kill themselves, was stopped and tied up due to sheer dumb luck.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis:
    • She's the first to pick up on the fact that three people need to discover a body for a Body Discovery Announcement to play.
    • Based on the video of the corpses of the orphanage children, the photo Yuki found, and the letter about Hope's Peak shutting down, she's able to hypothesize that the group were likely trapped in Hope's Peak much longer than they thought, and they may have lost their memories of their time attending because of Monokuma. The trial revealing that Haruhiko discovering the treasure and being given a photo of him and Satsuki dating solidifies this theory.
  • Be as Unhelpful as Possible: Her Jerkass tendencies make her this, with her often settling for calling everyone around her idiots instead of actually offering helpful information unless directly prompted. She even outright states in Chapter 1 that she has no intention of helping, and reveals she already figured out the entire case.
    • In Chapter 1, everyone suspects she killed Kiyoka after she arrives to the crime scene late, with her disregard over her death not helping in making her appear innocent. Instead of simply explaining that Kakeru can provide her an alibi since they ran into each other around six, which is when Kiyoka was being murdered, she opts to keep it to herself and not properly explain what kept her, and when Yuki directly questions her on it she repeatedly calls him an idiot before directing him to the "muscle lawyer".
    • Later on, when discussing how the culprit could have hanged Kiyoka if they were a boy, Tsurugi realizes that she figured it out and asks her to tell, only for her to remain adamant about not helping, and uses the chance to deflect the question to Yuki just to call him an idiot again.
    • Subverted in Case 2. She initially takes the same stance she took in Case 1, but when everyone becomes stumped on who the culprit is, she decides to step in and offer advice that they should consider the case from another angle, allowing them to figure out that Akane isn't Kizuna's killer, having stabbed her and left her alive for the real culprit to finish off.
    • When Yuki asks her why she demanded he show her his right hand after he got her out of the locker in Chapter 3, she refuses to answer. Later on, when what she saw needs to be used to finally pinpoint the culprit, she effectively refuses the say it until Kinji presses her Berserk Button and claims she "doesn't know anything", prompting her to reveal it as payback.
    • Surprisingly Subverted in Chapter 4, when everyone gets trapped in the ballroom with a limited food supply. For some reason, the limited amount of food keeps dropping more and more and everyone assumes that her and Tsurugi, who aren't co-operating with them, are the ones responsible, only for them to reveal that they're only eating one meal a day that's of a similar size to the ones they're eating, not that the others believe them. It turns out the reason for the shortages is because Haruhiko and Satsuki, and Teruya secretly grabbing meals.
    • After Satsuki's execution, Rei swears to abandon this stance and cooperate with the others in honour of her sacrifice, inspired by her willingness to put her life on the line for others.
  • Berserk Button: Insulting her intellect. Just ask Kinji.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Aware of the risks of wandering around at night, she had luminous paint, among other things, on her person in the event that she's attacked so she can leave evidence as to who did it, which is what's used to implicate Kinji in Chapter 3.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She still acts quite condescending but she does show a softer side for her friends. While she is still quick to call him incompetent, as time passes she becomes increasingly friendly towards Yuki even outside of Free Time events.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: While she doesn't react to it as poorly as Tsurugi, she's also sceptical of the idea that Haruhiko gave up his life for Satsuki and tried to make it so she could get away with it, on account of them only having met rather recently. And similarly, when Satsuki confirms that was the case and Rei realizes that she threw the chance to save her own skin, she's floored.
  • Expy: She's practically a female Byakuya Togami.
  • Fiery Redhead: She has bright orange hair and is quick to go off on anyone who annoys her.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: She has a secret fondness for teddy bears.
  • The Glasses Come Off: During the party in Chapter 4, Rei sports a stunning red dress and removes her glasses.
  • Insufferable Genius: She's incredibly confident in her intellect and enjoys lording it over the other students, always finding an excuse to call them some variation of idiot. She also takes clear, smug pleasure from knowing who killed Kiyoka in Case 1, while the others don't, even refusing to to tell them when they demand she do.
  • Iron Lady: Her first Free Time event suggests that she had to become tougher and colder in order to earn her position as a Hope's Peak student.
  • Jerkass: Cold, arrogant and very difficult to bond with.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: She's rude and blunt but she does make valid points throughout the storyline.
    • While her Surrounded by Idiots attitude isn't presented as a positive trait, she's not exactly wrong about some of the other students, with some of them, namely Haru and Teruya, tending to be slow on the uptake.
    • Zig-Zagged in Chapter 1. She's quick to point out that her being the last to arrive at the girl's bathroom where Kiyoka died doesn't automatically make her the culprit. However, the students aren't wrong to suspect her since she decides to Be as Unhelpful as Possible and not outright explain why she's innocent. This leads to everyone suspecting her and, instead of explaining during the trial when Kizuna accusses her, she continues to be uncooperative, making her look more suspicious until Yuki and Kakeru confirm her alibi.
    • She arguably Invokes this by exposing the secret in the first place, but she's not wrong that everyone should be worrying less about Ayame's leg and more about finding the culprit.
    • When Teruya expresses worry about how they're gonna have to force someone to be executed in Case 2, she's quick to point out that the only alternative is the rest of them dying.
    • She's quick to point that Tsurugi's string trick to make sure everyone didn't come out at night isn't very valid, since there's no way to prove he actually did it.
    • In a rare Pet the Dog example, she's very critical of the other's claim of The Power of Friendship and working together when they're so willing to distrust and isolate Yuki because Monokuma insinuated that he's The Mole.
  • Kick the Dog: During Case 2, she figures out the true severity of Ayame's leg injury and decides to expose it to everyone for no other reason than to cause panic and distrust.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After spending most of the game being an Insufferable Genius with a Lack of Empathy, she ends up being attacked and stuff in a locker in Chapter 3.
  • Meaningful Name: In Japanese, Rei's given name 冷 means "cold" or "cool", which may refer to her personality in general.
  • Nerves of Steel: Despite being attacked and stuffed into a locker in Chapter 3, aside from some minor embarrassment in needing Yuki's help to escape, she gets over it relatively quickly and immediately starts investigating.
  • Not So Above It All: While the others are cautiously excited about the party in Chapter 4, Rei actually seems excited for it, prettying herself up and donning a somewhat revealing red dress. She reasons that they can't exactly disobey Monokuma anyway, so she might as well have fun with it.
  • Not So Stoic: All throughout the final trial, Rei loses her haughtiness at various points in the trial. Such as when Utsuro reveals the real reason as to why her parents abandoned her to when Akane sacrifices herself to save her.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In Chapter 4 shortly after exposing Teruya as one of the food thieves and causing a rift in the group, she attempts to taunt Yuki the day after over it, but when he snipes back that she's in hot water herself with all the food gone, she actually stops and admits he has a point before leaving, which actually catches Yuki off guard.
  • Parental Abandonment: Rei's parents and her family by extension abandoned her when she was a girl. Believing that they never loved her, Rei developed a bitter resentment towards them. But according to Utsuro, the reason they abandoned her was because they were having financial difficulties with operating their bank and they did not want their beloved daughter to suffer for their mistakes.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Despite her generally callous attitude, and insinuating that she secretly desired to escape, she does commend Ayame's courage for killing Kizuna to spare Akane from being the Blackened. And even then, she acknowledges that she was definitely more conflicted about escaping than Mitsuhiro.
    • When everyone doubts Yuki's claims of finding a group photo due to his possible status as The Mole, which isn't helped by Monokuma taking the photo to prevent him from showing them, she actually backs him up and confirms that Monokuma did take it, even calling them out on inviting him to the meeting only to fling doubt and mistrust at him.
    • In chapter 4, she commends Yuki's work in the previous class trial. She also appears to respect him enough to suck up her pride and ask for his opinion of her hypothesis of the students having their memories wiped by Monokuma, forgetting how long they were really at Hope's Peak.
  • The Professor: It's her talent.
  • The Rival: She can be considered the main rival of DRA as she constantly butts heads with the other students and is very difficult to work with. She even describes everyone else as her rivals to defeat.
  • The Smart Girl: Despite her abrasive side, Rei is very competent and uses her intelligence to help make better sense of a given situation.
  • Stoic Spectacles: A gender-flipped example.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: She considers having to watch over her classmates to be similar to babysitting children.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: She doesn't act the least bit grateful when Yuki and Kakeru prove her innocence in Trial 1, even calling the former an "Incompetent" again.

     Satsuki Iranami
Satsuki Iranami

Ultimate Clown

Satsuki is a highly energetic girl who never forgets to smile and make jokes, no matter how serious the situation is. She has a childish style of speaking and sometimes refers to herself in third person. She often inserts silly remarks in conversations, making her unpredictable and a "person who makes you tired by just talking with", as described by Yuki.

She is the culprit of Chapter 4, having been convinced by Haruhiko to duel him with guns, not realizing he had rigged it in her favor in hopes of helping her escape.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Often called Haruhiko "Kobazing".
  • Big Eater: Deconstructed. In Chapter 4 after Monokuma locks them on the 4th Floor, she and Haruhiko, being Locked Out of the Loop, end up eating almost all the food in the dining hall, effectively leaving everyone to starve.
  • Cassandra Truth:
    • In Chapter 4, the 4th Floor contains a armory full of weapons. When Satsuki suggest blowing up the door, Haruhiko, not knowing about it and assuming it's another of her random jokes, doesn't believe and does the usual Straight Man routine.
    • Later on in Chapter 4, Satsuki attempts to simply confess to killing Haruhiko and end the trial then and there, but all the evidence Teruya left behind in his murder plan and her inability to explain why Haruhiko's hand exploded ends up making her attempt at an early confession this, which isn't helped when Rei claims she's trying to get everyone killed in her grief over his death and accuses her of intentionally misdirecting everyone. She then decides to just let the trial play out under Kurukawa's advice so everyone will be convinced. That being said, it's Implied that this was Invoked on her part so she could honour Haruhiko's Last Request in some manner.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: She is pretty strange compared to her classmates.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Stuffed into a barrel and stabbed by Monokuma's throwing a bunch of throwing knives, before the barrel launches her into ceiling and crashing her head through it.
  • Disappointed in You: While not as overt about it as Akane, she displays this towards Yuki, as well as Haruhiko and Teruya, for nearing the Despair Event Horizon.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Part of the reason why no one believes Yuki's accusation of her being the culprit; she's way too chipper about being outed.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: Her Last Words are one to Haruhiko (who’s also dead).
  • Easily Forgiven: Despite their actions leading to the food to run out in Chapter 4, everyone sans Teruya effectively let her and Haruhiko off so long as they promise to put more effort into investigating.
  • Face Death with Dignity: While she was always willing to die if it meant helping the others, she's quick to accept her execution if it meant the others lived to take on Monokuma, and partly because she didn't want to live in a world without Haruhiko in it.
  • The Fool: Tends to do her own thing rather than focus too much on the depressing environment.
  • Genki Girl: She's an energetic girl who's always smiling.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • After Yuki gives a despair induced speech that causes a pissed off Akane to run off in tears, she responds to Teruya and Haruhiko trying to comfort him by relating by calling them stupid and leaving, giving Yuki some insightful words about how "Hope isn't something you find, it's something you create."
  • Human Pincushion: Her eventual fate as she gets knives stabbed into pretty much every part of her body.
  • Hypocrite: When Mikako exposes Haruhiko as the one who was stealing the food and causing the food shortages in Chapter 4, she tries to call him out on it... only for Mikako to then reveals how she was doing it with him.
  • Inspirational Martyr: In a similar vein to Sakura, her death serves to inspire the other students to rebel against Monokuma.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: She has eleven older brothers and nine older sisters.
  • The Needs of the Many: She's one of the few to agree with Teruya's idea for two people to sacrifice themselves by becoming a victim and culprit respectively, albeit in the context of sacrificing herself for the others.
  • Nice Girl: Behind her eccentricities, Satsuki is a very kind individual. When everyone suspects Yuki of being The Mole, she tries to invite him to play poker with her and Haruhiko despite the latter's protests, and is the one who convinces everyone to give him a chance and re-include him in the group.
  • Non-Ironic Clown: While she may come off as overbearing, she does maintain the appearance of a friendly and good-natured clown.
  • Odd Couple: In Chapter 4, a dying Haruhiko reveals that he and Satsuki used to be an item before they lost their memories.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: As a sign of how close they were, she's sobbing over Haruhiko's death even as she eats. Not comical crying like we normally see from her, but actual crying. Afterwards, she's almost completely silent and doesn't act in her normal eccentric manner. This is likely in part because she's the one who killed him against her will.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: She serves as this when things get too dark or hectic.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Part of why no one believes she's the culprit in Haruhiko's murder when she confesses and Yuki initially outs her; the first time it's too out of the blue, and the second she comes off as too cheerful. Turns out this was intentional since, while she would rather die to save the others, she didn't want to completely dishonour Haruhiko's Last Request.
  • Secret-Keeper: While she's quick to confess to killing Haruhiko, she's rather tight-lipped about her motives, just claiming that she found having to hide it too troublesome. The truth of the matter is that, she and Haruhiko had a duel that he rigged in her favour.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: While not necessarily unattractive as she normally dresses, the party in Chapter 4 leaves the others stunned when she removes her clown uniform and make-up and dons a beautiful blue dress. Though, she doesn't find it comfortable to wear, and gets more annoyed when Monokuma dictates that they can't get changed.
  • Shout-Out: Her death is based off of the children's game, Pop-up Pirate.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: When Kinji finds a cell phone, she's quick to assume it's actually broken and is merely there as Hope Spot. Turns out it's perfectly functional and even has a charger, much to her shock though it isn't getting any signal. Ironically enough, it does end up broken later when it's used to electrocute Kanata.
  • Xanatos Gambit: She decided to approach Haruhiko's plan to save her in this manner; either she lives at the expense of the others and honours Haruhiko's Last Request, or she's outed and the others get to live while she joins Haru in the afterlife.
