Polydor Records is a European record label with a long history. It was founded in 1913 in Germany, becoming popular in the late 1940s. A British branch, Polydor Records Ltd., was established in 1954, and an American branch was founded in 1969.
In 1972, it was reorganized into PolyGram, which merged Polydor with Phonogram note and increased its influence on the rock and disco scene. Around the same time, it also acquired MGM Records. However, Polydor's popularity began to wane in The '90s. In 1998, PolyGram was purchased by SeaGram, and later, Universal Music Group. It was folded into the Interscope Geffen A&M Records umbrella, which it remains a part of today.
Polydor is responsible for distributing Interscope's releases in the United Kingdom, while Interscope Geffen A&M in turn distributes Polydor's releases in the US.
