Beacon Students

Team CFVY

    Coco Adel

Coco Adel

The Leader of Team CFVY.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Lacks her large and fragile ego and isn't bossy towards her teammates.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Absolutely destroys CRD when they pick on Velvet.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Lost her father. She connects with Ren because of this.
  • Girly Bruiser: If she's gonna kick ass, she's going to do it in style.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: She's a very feminine fashionista and she's in a relationship with Velvet.
  • Nice Girl: Chill, laid back, and perfectly happy to befriend and give advice to freshman at Beacon.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Implied in canon considering how much space was in Gianduja, but it is explicitly shown that most people have trouble even picking it up.
  • Team Killer: She accidentally takes out Yatsuhashi in the tournament thanks to Emerald tricking her into thinking he was Mercury.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Don’t. Touch. Velvet.

    Fox Alistair

Fox Alistair

A very snarky blind huntsman trainee.

Tropes:

  • Dark and Troubled Past: Fox and his boyfriend Ink were raised in Vacuo and abused by their parents.
  • Disabled Snarker: He's blind and he has no shortage of sarcastic remarks for every situation.
    "Be careful. I bite. Verbally."
  • Enraged by Idiocy: Adrian's brand of stupidity is too much for him.
  • Freudian Excuse: Being raised by Abusive Parents in Vacuo is what led to his bitter snarking.
  • I Have No Son!: When his mother Rena begs him not to kill her, she pulls the "I'm your mother" card. Fox doesn't consider her a mother and kills her without question.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Snarky and condescending, but a Nice Guy when in the right mood, and he’s nothing but kind and gentle with his boyfriend, Ink.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Fox’s snarky quips bite him in the ass during the "Scary Story" one-shot, as everyone starts to snark back and he learns he can’t get as good as he gives. He ends up leaving the room rather upset.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: He declares Adrian to be his nemesis.
  • Straight Gay: He displays no indication of being gay until he mentions that he has a boyfriend.
  • Tranquil Fury: He slices Miranda's hand off out of nowhere and the moment after is left deathly quiet. Everyone else from shock, but he knows what he did, suggesting it was a moment of controlled rage.

    Velvet Scarlatina

Velvet Scarlatina

A rabbit Faunus who is dating Coco.

Tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: While Velvet says her parents never hurt her, they were extremely dysfunctional and screamed at and assaulted each other in front of her, traumatizing her.
  • Badass Adorable: The Vytal tournament shows how good she is with combat.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Velvet’s parents were in a dysfunctional relationship and would get into violent arguments with each other in front of her.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: Miranda Spot is so vile that she manages to bring out a near murderous rage whenever she is confronted by her. Not even Jax, her boss, earns this much ire from her.
  • Nice Girl: She doesn't like to her bullies hurt.
  • Official Couple: With Coco.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Velvet is a sweet and innocent girl that doesn't want to hurt anyone and wants to see the best in people. She also has one of the cleaner mouths in the series. When it comes to Miranda and the horrible conditions of Vacuo, she swears often and displays such rage towards Miranda that she relishes in the idea of brutalizing the woman.
  • Precision F-Strike: Drops an “Are you fucking serious” upon learning Vacuo authorities will leave junkies bodies to rot because they don’t consider them human.
  • Stronger Than They Look: There are few people who can actually lift Coco's weapon. She is one of them.

    Yatsuhashi Daichi

Yatsuhashi Daichi

The Big Guy for Team CFVY.

Tropes:

  • Beware the Nice Ones: He sees no issue with threatening the authorities of Vacuo to ensure the bodies of recently murdered junkies get moved.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Accidentally made his sister catatonic by falling on top of her and the skin contact caused his memory-wiping semblance to activate, completely wiping her memory.
  • Nice Guy: A chill, sociable guy.
  • Tranquil Fury: When Adrian throws food at him, he calmly gets up and throws a pie at him with such force he cracks the wall it knocked him against.

Team CARD

    Collective Tropes
  • The Bus Came Back: After being completely absent in Volume 4, return at the end ready for Volume 5.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Despite being so utterly clueless and dysfunctional, they are able to pull off some true feats of combat prowess. Shown when they manage to defeat Hazel.
  • Masculine–Feminine Gay Couple: Revon and Deacon to a T.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Compared to the rest of the cast and how seriously things end up for them at times, they are the only characters that are consistently Played for Laughs.
  • Put on a Bus: After their humiliating defeat in the Vytal Tournament, they decide to go and take some huntsman missions outside of Vale while still dealing with the embarrassment. They leave for that mission in Volume 3 and are only seen once during the Fall where they are refusing to get involved when they see how much is going down.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns:
    • Are Put on a Bus during Volume 3, so they’re not around during the Fall of Beacon, and completely absent from the Darker and Edgier Volume 4 apart from a cameo at the end.
    • They want to be included in the discussion about the death of Summer Rose, so Canvas promises that if Adrain interrupts, they'll stay out of the main group's business for the time being. Adrian immediately screws it up and Canvas frustratedly ushers his team away while the others discuss the story.

    Lucien Canvas

Lucien Canvas

The Leader of Team CARD and Adrian's long-time best friend.

Tropes:

  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: He is legally required to stay with Adrian at all times lest he ends up causing some kind of collateral damage. It seems that the Canvases and Churches have this relationship altogether going back generations to the founding of Atlas. And he's the only one that can do this. Deacon tries and he can't survive more than 45 seconds doing it on his own.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He's definitely one of the snarkiest members of the team. Considering he has to deal with Adrian, it's most likely a skill he has developed to deal with his job babysitting him.
  • Last-Name Basis: He is mainly referred to as Canvas, which is how his team is named. He was referred to as Lucien before the team was formed, but afterward, this is exclusively how he is addressed.
  • Nice Guy: Pretty chill outside of frustration with Adrian, and even then, he cares about him at the end of the day.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite his frustration with Adrian, Canvas really likes to lord over the fact they're legally bonded to each other. When Glynda sternly tells him it's not his choice to be partnered with Adrian, he very smugly tells her it isn’t hers, either. He also interrupts Ozpin to loudly boast that he got the partner he wanted.
  • Only Sane by Comparison: While he doesn't have the overt eccentricities of his team, it's not like he's a paragon of professionalism himself.
  • So Proud of You: Whenever Adrian holds onto the Smart Ball.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Downplayed and one-sided with Adrian. Canvas has to scold him like a strict parent whenever he does something stupid (which is often), but he gets along with him swimmingly otherwise and shows pride whenever Adrian does something smart.

    Adrian Church

Adrian Church

Canvas' best friend and walking safety hazard.

Tropes:

  • Cloudcuckoolander: Let's just say that his brand of logic is... unique to put it mildly.
  • The Ditz: Exaggerated. At one point, he managed to forget his own name.
Harry: That kid hasn't been playing with a full deck for a long time.
Canvas: He's never had a deck to begin with.
  • Forgetful Jones: He tends to forget things a lot, even things that happened only seconds ago.
  • Genius Ditz: Despite his incredible stupidity, he does have moments of genuine competence. It's not often, but it happens.
  • Lethally Stupid: The reason he needs Canvas around. Otherwise, he will cause damage to others in the most inexplicable ways.
  • Kindhearted Simpleton: A complete buffoon, but he's really sweet. It's just that his idiocy pisses people off.
  • Not Me This Time: When Canvas chides Adrian during Blackheart's attack, he and Harry state that he has nothing to do with this mishap since he was sitting patiently the whole time. Turns out, it was someone even more incompetent than him.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: To Fox, who is continually frustrated with his stupidity. Though this is a one-sided rivalry since Adrian can't even comprehend the idea that Fox hates him.

    Revon White

Revon White

A flamboyantly gay dove Faunus.

Tropes:

    Deacon Temple

Deacon Temple

The fourth member who has a crush on Revon.

Tropes:

Team CRDL

    Collective Tropes
  • Dirty Coward: They run away the second fights turn against them and try to abandon their peers during the Fall of Beacon.
  • Gang of Bullies: This team plays this role in the school.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: They planned to leave their peers behind in the airship to fight the Grimm. Some Nevermores lock in on their negativity and kill them not long after they take off.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: They hightail it out of the Fall of Beacon. It doesn't go well for them.

    Cardin Winchester

Cardin Winchester

The Leader of Team CRDL.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Villainy: Cardin is willing to let his peers die in his place while he gets out safely.
  • Adaptational Wimp: He was on the front lines fighting Grimm during the Fall of Beacon in canon. Here, he doesn't bother fighting and hightails it out of there.
  • Dirty Coward: Plans to leave with his team to avoid having to be caught in the carnage of the Fall of Beacon.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: He and his team came on the ship with Ironwood to take it for themselves to run to safety.
  • Pet the Dog: Seems to be genuinely friendly with his team, not holding it against them when they abandon him and planning to take them with him when he abandons their peers to the fall.
  • Smug Snake: Goes into every fight expecting a Curb-Stomp Battle in his favor, only to be sent running for the hills badly beaten every time. This leads to his death.
  • Too Dumb to Live: He thinks that he can get away scot-free by taking an airship from Ironwood and stranding everyone to fight for themselves. Not only does he not know how to fly the damn thing, he ends up getting himself and his team killed.

    Russel Thrush

Russel Thrush

A member of Team CRDL

Tropes:

    Dove Bronzewing

Dove Bronzewing

A member of Team CRDL

Tropes:

    Sky Lark

Sky Lark

A member of Team CRDL

Tropes:

Beacon Faculty

    Ozpin

Professor Ozpin

The headmaster of Beacon Academy.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Heroism: No Sink or Swim Mentor here, as instead of chucking students into the Grimm-invested Emerald Forest to earn a place in Beacon, he simply interviews them, and is kind and gentle through the whole thing.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: His blunt, sterner moments are completely omitted, and he’s very forgiving.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Ozma was far from the hero he was portrayed as in canon. He was willing to sell out Salem's kingdom to save his own skin.
  • The Atoner: The reason he was brought back was for a chance to reconcile for his past mistakes.
  • Dirty Coward: Salem accuses him of this. Ozma was willing to sell out Salem and her kingdom to keep himself alive. Even now, he had a way to end everything, but he wasn't willing to do it out of fear that he would be judged. And he retreats into Oscar's mind when Yang starts confronting him.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: The way teams are chosen is based on his judgment. He personally interviews the students and tries to see who would make for good partners and teammates. While some of the students may disagree with his decisions, it usually ends up working out in the end.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When the Fall Maiden's powers are taken, Ozpin has nothing else to do but stay and let Cinder kill him.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: He was brutally murdered by the woman he betrayed.
  • Nice Guy: A kind, understanding man.
  • Resurrective Immortality: A bit different from canon since Oscar doesn't hear his voice at first and is only driven to find the heroes based on a feeling. Though it is implied that it's Ozpin guiding him. He is fully able to take control at certain points.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He's doing everything he can to protect people and will understand his subordinates' concerns. He doesn't mince words about what it means for Pyrrha to become the Fall Maiden, and she wants to protect Raven and her family after she becomes the Spring Maiden while promising that she'll be protected if she goes into hiding.
  • Treachery Is a Special Kind of Evil: He condemned his kingdom to being razed by the warrior leader.

    Glynda Goodwitch

Professor Glynda Goodwitch

A teacher at Beacon Academy and close confidant to Ozpin.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Wimp: Students aren’t afraid to talk back to her if they think she’s wrong.
  • Death by Adaptation: Glynda commits suicide in this series, while Volume 8 of canon showed she was still alive.
  • Despair Event Horizon: After losing Gannet, Glynda completely breaks, even losing her semblance. Upon learning she killed her, she takes her own life.
  • Driven to Suicide: Glynda kills herself after learning she killed her wife.
  • Freudian Excuse: It’s revealed that her home life lacked discipline as a child, causing her to step up and scold and ground her younger siblings. This led to her desiring discipline under her roof when she grows up, and that roof ended up being Beacon.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's a Stern Teacher, but does care about her students and is loving towards her wife.
  • Mercy Kill: After Gannet makes it clear that she is suffering while being paralyzed, she smothers her to put her out of her misery.
  • Never Found the Body: Ciel receives Penny's core, but they were unable to recover Glynda.
  • Not So Stoic:
    • Outside of frustration at students, she keeps a cool head, but even she is absolutely baffled by Adrian’s stupidity.
    • Is loving towards her wife, to the point many students were freaked out by her showing happiness.
    • Is openly miserable throughout the process of choosing the next Fall Maiden.
    • Completely loses her shit after finding her wife with her neck snapped. It’s stated any students on the evacuation ship she was on lost all hope when seeing her screaming and crying in grief at the state her wife is in.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Is gentle with Velvet after she was hurt by CRDL.
    • She’s a completely different person around her wife. It freaks the Beacon students out being so loving and affectionate.
  • Stern Teacher: She's not as gentle with the students as Ozpin. Though she really doesn’t get to do much disciplining due to him being in charge.
  • The Stoic: Glynda is very cold and professional.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: After Gannet’s death, Glynda is far crueler to others than she was before, practically bullying Woods and leaving him for dead.

    Doctor Oobleck

Dr. Bartholomew Oobleck

A manic professor who works at Beacon.

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Personality Change: He is much more manic and deluded than his canon counterpart.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite his many eccentricities, he is a capable teacher and knowledgeable huntsman, something he displays during the "Breach" arc when Team RWBY goes to Mount Glenn to stop Torchwick.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: He believes that beavers are out to destroy humanity and control the world.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Openly breaks down upon realizing Beacon and Vale have been lost and doesn’t correct Yang when she accidentally calls him Professor.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With the ironically homosexual Glynda Goodwitch. Out of all the Beacon staff, he’s the closest to her, to the point he offers her a room at his place so she doesn’t have to be alone after her wife dies.
  • Hidden Depths: Shows a lot of it during the "Breach" Arc, showing just how competent he is at being a teacher and huntsmen despite his eccentricities.
  • Nice Guy: Eccentricities aside, Oobleck cares about his students, and will give them advice in times of stress.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Somberly tells Yang “It’s just a title” when she accidentally calls him Professor.

    Peter Port

Professor Peter Port

A professor who works at Beacon.

Tropes:

  • Cool Teacher: Is fun and supportive with his students, though Weiss proves he’s not afraid to be stern when he needs to be.
  • Nice Guy: A fun and jolly fellow. Though stern with Weiss, he tried to encourage her to accept Ozpin's decision.
  • Psychologist Teacher: He quite calmly breaks down Weiss's issues with not being the leader. Like in canon, he tells her where she's going wrong and that she needs to do better rather than just throw herself a pity party.

Patch Police Department

    The Hardy Boys

Frank and Joe Hardrock

A pair of detectives at the Vale Police Department.

Tropes:

  • Ascended Extras: They were minor background characters whose main contribution was chasing down Sun in his introduction. In this story, they are actually friends with Yang and get named as well.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: For all their quirks and eccentricities, they’re competent cops and survived the Fall of Vale without a scratch.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Yang's caller ID for Frank is Frankfurter, and she calls him that after he picks up, much to his annoyance.
  • Friend on the Force: Yang is especially close friends with them. Her connections with them are exactly what helps with the sting operation at the White Fang rally.
  • Hidden Depths: For all their eccentricities, they are good at their jobs and the criminals of Vale fear them because of it. Only Winter has also reached this level of infamy in the criminal underworld.
  • Not So Above It All: Frank sees nothing wrong with the innuendos their "get hard on crime" phrasing causes.
  • Straight Man: Frank tends to be this.

    Hector Blaze

Hector Blaze

An older Patch cop who moonlights as a vigilante.

Tropes:

  • Anti-Hero: Hector assaults and murders criminals who are on track to escaping the law.
  • Badass Normal: As far as can be told, he doesn't fight with a Semblance or even Aura. Just sheer determination, ingenuity, and force of will.
  • The Cameo: Yang calls him in Volume 5 for advice in the "Interrogation" one-shot. She also calls him at the beginning of Volume 6 after getting her revenge.
  • Car Fu: He begins his assault on Carter's drug lab by ramming his car through the wall, much to the surprise of Carter's goons and Yang.
  • Cool Old Guy: Yang and many others call him old man, and he can still kick ass.
  • The Corrupter: In a way, he encouraged Yang to be far more rage and revenge-driven than she was in canon. Something that, at best, he doesn't actively discourage. He also gives her tips on torture interrogations.
  • Cowboy Cop: He goes outside of the law to get people who the law can't touch.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: His fight with Carter's goons in the drug lab ended with most of them dead, and he didn't have a scratch.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His son was murdered by Carter Pillar, causing his wife to leave him and for him to give up on living.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He only goes after criminals who are going to escape the law. Even then, he’ll let them live if they agree to admit to their crimes and turn themselves in. It’s only when they show no desire to do so or are Beyond Redemption that he kills them.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Yang was initially pretty hostile to him due to bitterness over Sapphire’s death, but she warms up to him and even asks him to help her take Carter down.
  • Hypocrisy Nod: He tells Yang not to blame herself for Sapphire's death, but Yang fires back by saying he doesn't have room to talk considering his feelings about his son's death. He admits that he should take his own advice.
  • Improvised Weapon User: He kills someone with a car key to the eye socket.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: He forms one with Yang as they tear apart Carter’s operation in a single night. They bond over their shared desire to exact punishment on those who get away with their crimes and their shared feelings about the loss of their loved ones.
  • It's All My Fault: Blames himself to this day for his son’s death.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: Implied. When Yang asks him if he's ever encountered a criminal that isn't afraid to die, he bluntly says "of course." This is before he gives Yang tips on how to interrogate Trifa. Whatever he told her, they are said to be worse than "military interrogation methods."
  • Nice Guy: He's a chill, sociable guy who people aren’t afraid to talk with. As long as they aren't the criminals he hunts...
  • One-Man Army: He can take on several men without breaking a sweat. He completely butchers a group of Carter's mooks after ramming his car into their building.
  • Red Baron: He is known as the Roaring Flames.
  • Vigilante Man: Hector got sick of the wealthy and powerful getting away with crimes, so he went after criminals that managed to escape justice.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: "Best buds" might be a stretch, but he and Yang do enjoy some mutual playful ribbing.

Enemies of Faunus

    Carter Pillar

Carter Pillar

A wealthy man who is the leader of the hate group Enemy of the Faunus.

Tropes:

  • Arch-Enemy: To Hector. He killed his son and ruined his life.
  • Arc Villain: Of the "Yellow" Arc.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: He’s mentioned to be an aristocrat due to his family founding Patch, and he’s a vicious racist who slaughters Faunus, sells dangerous drugs, and traffics Faunus.
  • Asshole Victim: Yang brutally kills him, and yet she’s still allowed to walk away because he and his men were such vile scum.
  • Create Your Own Hero: His killing Hector’s son and murdering the Ensleys is what caused Hector to go on his crusade against crime and eventually ally with Yang to tear apart his empire and murder him.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: He is completely incinerated by Yang and goes out screaming in agony.
  • Cruel Mercy: He lets Hector live after accidentally killing his son in a car bombing meant for him, as he hoped after he ruined his life he’d get to watch him drink himself to death or kill himself.
  • Dirty Coward: Pathetically begs for his life when Yang gets the upper hand on him.
  • Dirty Old Man: Unaware that Sapphire is dead, Carter toys with the idea of abducting her, psychologically destroying her, and turning her into a Sex Slave, either selling her to a "perverted gentleman" or keeping her for himself.
  • Fantastic Racism: He is the leader of a pro-human hate group.
  • Fat Bastard: He is as girthy as he is vile.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Is a very chatty guy, but only towards his victims.
  • Jerkass: A selfish, racist old pervert who mocks his enemies.
  • Kick the Dog: Pretty much every single scene he is in is dedicated to showing he deserved Yang to painfully incinerate him:
    • While he initially intended to kill Hector in the car bombing, he decided to let him live after accidentally killing his son so he can watch his life go up in smoke.
    • After killing Sapphire’s parents when she was a baby, he leaves the infant Sapphire unattended, hoping she’d die of starvation or dehydration as a last middle finger to her father.
    • He brutally brands a Faunus family, making them watch as he kills the youngest child.
    • He is a Faunus Trafficker who has Faunus shipped in from Vacuo, where he Mind Rapes them into obedience, then ships them off to Vacuo to be made into slaves for the SCD.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The two people he hurt the most, Sapphire and Hector, are indirectly responsible for his death through Yang.
  • Mind Rape: Carter specializes in this. He breaks down the Faunus slaves he gets from The Crown mentally, ensuring they won’t fight back when shipped to Jacques’ mines.
  • No Body Left Behind: Yang made good on her promise that there would be nothing left to bring in.
  • Sadist: Smiles as he brands the Faunus family and makes them watch him kill the youngest of the family.
  • The Sociopath: He's a disgusting aristocrat and human trafficker who only cares about his bottom line and his own desires. Committing pointless acts of cruelty is something he takes pride in. He also loves to lord his superiority over others.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Left an infant Sapphire to die of starvation and/or dehydration after killing her parents. While he didn’t intend to kill Hector’s son, he feels no remorse and the pain it caused Hector was satisfying enough for him.

    Jefferson

Jefferson

Carter's butler and bodyguard.

Tropes:

Team STRQ

A former team at Beacon.

    Summer Rose

Summer Rose

The former leader of Team STRQ and mother of Ruby.

Tropes:

  • Beware the Nice Ones: One of the nicest members of Team STRQ, but she can also be pretty ruthless when it comes to protecting innocent people.
  • Character Tics: She had a habit of biting her nails out of nervousness. Raven called her out for it when they were in Beacon.
  • Face Death with Despair: Raven tries to say that she faced death with dignity, but the reality is that she went out sobbing in agony while fearful of her impending death.
  • Good Parents: When she was alive, she did her best to be there for both Ruby and Yang. Especially after Raven left.
  • Innocently Insensitive: A justified example. She ended up misgendering Ruby in the flashback, but this was well before it was known that Ruby was transgender since she was still a baby at the time.
  • Posthumous Character: She died long before the start of the story and was only seen in flashbacks.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: She was very cheerful and vibrant before Raven left. Even amidst the dire circumstances of Ozpin's war, she was determined and idealistic about it. After Raven leaves, she seems more hardened compared to her previous self. And she does not even let Raven get a word in when she tries to come back to her.

    Taiyang Xiao Long

Taiyang "Tai" Xiao Long

Ruby and Yang's father.

Tropes:

  • Good Parents: He was very helpful to Summer and Raven while taking care of Yang. Even with his circumstances after Raven left and Summer died, he does his best to take care of his daughters. He laments the fact that he has to go out to his job after his safety net dries up after the Fall and worries that her daughter might be suicidal.
  • Second Love: To Summer after Raven left.

    Raven Branwen
See her tropes here

    Qrow Branwen

Qrow Branwen

A huntsman who works with Ozpin.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Wimp: He was able to keep up with Winter while drunk in canon. This version isn't even able to land a hit on Winter while he was drunk.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He comes in clutch to save RNPR from Tyrian.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite his antics and alcoholism, he's able to come through with his job when it counts. Something that even Winter can admit.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Picking a fight with Winter doesn't end well for him. In his defense, he was drunk.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He is willing to start a fight with Winter by hitting Weiss in the head, but when he finds out Weiss is on his nieces' team, he regrets it. He also takes his job seriously as a huntsman otherwise.
  • Heroic BSoD: He is understandably devastated that the man he committed his life to could have ended the pointless suffering at any time, but refused to out of his own cowardice. It's a lot for him to take in.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Raven's status as a hero is questionable, but Qrow definitely gives her this about her lackluster parenting skills and her insistence on still being a bandit.

Other Citizens

    Sapphire Ensley

Sapphire Ensley

Yang's long-time girlfriend.

Tropes:

  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Poor. Poor Sapphire. Spitefully dropped into the Grimm-infested streets by Mercury, Sapphire was attacked by three Ursas who tear her apart, but she still lives long enough for Yang to fruitlessly try to save her.
  • Damsel in Distress: Doesn’t have much combat experience and is absolutely terrified when people come to kill her, usually needing Yang to save her.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her parents were murdered by Carter Pillar when she was a baby, and she bounced around from foster home to foster home. Never being adopted left her feeling unwanted and unloved.
  • Defiant Captive: Downplayed. Getting kidnapped isn't really a big deal for her since she knows Yang will be on her way to save her.
  • Dream Walker/Dream Weaver: Her Semblance allows her and anyone she pulls into her dreams to lucid dream, extending this power to anyone who she brings into her dreams.
  • Hidden Depths: Is revealed to have been severely affected by her lonely childhood.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To Yang, and vice-versa. Her death absolutely shattered Yang, and it's clear she won't be the same as she once was.
  • Nice Girl: Is a sweet, supportive girlfriend to Yang, and her kindness extends to others as well.
  • Official Couple: With Yang. They end up engaged after the "Breach" arc.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Downplayed, but she does go from Damsel in Distress to shooting down bullheads. Despite this, she still isn’t a match for people coming to kill her.
  • Wrench Wench: She is a mechanic by trade, and she helps Yang fix Bumblebee from time to time.

    Zwei

Zwei the dog

The Xiao Long/Rose family dog.

Tropes:

  • Badass Adorable: He's able to generate his own aura and fight against the bandits with Yang.

    Noni Xiao Long

Noni Xiao Long

Taiyang's mother.

Tropes:

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: She tends to treat Tai like a little boy, much to his chagrin.
  • High-School Sweethearts: With Tai's father. They met when they were kids and started dating at Signal Academy. When he accidentally got her pregnant in their fourth year, he made a promise to her and her parents that he'd be there for the baby and Noni. They stayed together for twenty-five years after that up until his death.

    Shopkeep

The Shopkeep

An elderly man with several jobs.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Badass: Was a helpless old man in canon. Here? He pulls out a shotgun and starts blowing away robbers himself.
  • Badass Bystander: He's able to shoot at the robbers himself with little fear.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: His numerous occupations are lampshaded by a couple of characters.
  • Nice Guy: A grateful man who’s willing to give his rescuers free engagement rings as thanks for helping him.
  • The Speechless: Averted. He talks a lot and often when he's around.

    Gannet Goodwitch

Gannet Goodwitch

Glynda's wife.

Tropes:

  • Alliterative Name: Gannet Goodwitch.
  • And I Must Scream: After the Fall, she is paralyzed from the neck down. She openly states to Glynda that it is agony, to the point that she wants Glynda to Mercy Kill her.

    Samuel Cotton

Samuel Cotton

A hat maker in Vale who hired Cinder as a maid.

Tropes:

  • Benevolent Boss: He is rather patient and caring towards Cinder, making sure she doesn't overwork herself. She also gives her and her sisters free tickets to go to his Charity Ball. And this is before he gives her a raise and lets her go home early.
  • Nice Guy: Compared to his other affluent peers, he is a generous soul and treats Cinder and her sisters well.
  • Nice to the Waiter: Compared to Jacques talking about Cinder like she's lesser than them for being a maid, Cotton stands up for her and has Jacques tossed out for speaking to her that way.
  • Posthumous Character: He was killed in Cheshire's attack during Cinder's backstory.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: He was an honest aristocrat and generous man compared to someone like Jacques Schnee. However, he ended up dying in the attack and Jacques was thrown out of the party before it happened.
  • Wealthy Philanthropist: He is much more generous about his wealth compared to people like Jacques.

    Cinder's Sisters

Cinder's teenage and child sisters respectively.

Tropes:

  • The Lost Lenore: During the ball, they were killed during a terrorist attack by Cheshire.
  • Morality Chain: Their loss broke Cinder and set her on the path to villainy.
  • Orphan's Ordeal: They lost their parents to a car accident just after Cinder turned twenty-one. Cinder has been providing for them ever since.
  • Posthumous Character: They are long dead before the series began.
  • Punny Name: Rain Fall.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: Despite trying to help her, Annabel protecting Rain ended up being for naught.
