Haven Academy

    Professor Lionheart

Professor Leonardo Lionheart

A lion Faunus and the headmaster of Haven Academy.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Personality Change: He was very nervous and hesitant in canon about his work with Salem. Here, while he does still have cowardly moments, he can be cold and ruthless when the opportunity arises.
  • Adaptational Villainy: He was remorseful in canon about his alliance with Salem. Here, he willingly murders his own huntsmen to cover up taking a deal with Cinder.
  • Bad Liar: He's so scared that he can't really get his cover stories for the sabotage on Salem's behalf.
  • Dirty Coward: He is willing to sell out innocent people and huntsmen to keep himself alive.
  • Master Actor: Despite being bad at lying, he can act meek and helpless when it suits him to cover up a rather ruthless side of him.
  • Nervous Wreck: He's not exactly the boldest of the headmasters and is horrified by Qrow's wrath after his (likely intentional) screw-ups that put Mistral in as bad a place as Vale. He was also frightened into giving Wendigo the security codes to the orphanage. However, he can still be ruthless if it suits him.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: Not only does he betray his fellow huntsmen, but he also attempts to betray Salem by removing any evidence of his involvement and hiding from authorities. Salem predicted this and gave him his canon death.
  • The Sociopath: He is shameless in the betrayal of his allies and allowing the suffering of Mistral citizens. And he thinks nothing of unleashing a weapon of mass destruction to cover his involvement with Salem.

Branwen Tribe

  • Bandit Clan: As in the show, they are a tribe of bandits.
  • Rape, Pillage, and Burn: Qrow claims Raven is "leading the rape and slaughter of dozens of people," suggesting that this is the case. She insists that's not how things are run, but Qrow adds that she does let some bad eggs slip through.
  • Would Not Shoot a Civilian: Raven insists that they only kill when they are attacked. While not everyone follows this, this is the general rule for their tribe.

    Raven Branwen

Raven Branwen

Twin sister of Qrow, mother of Yang, and leader of the tribe.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: She seems significantly more conflicted about her immoral actions and doesn't come off as confrontational when she meets Qrow in the restaurant. She also left not because of her distrust of Ozpin's mission, but because she wanted to make sure her family was safe (even if it was misguided). She also doesn't use Vernal as a decoy for being the Spring Maiden.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: She shows no attraction to men in this series, whereas she was in love with Tai in the show.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Like in canon, she comes in at the last second to save Yang from Neo.
  • Maternally Challenged: While not malicious, she is not cut out to be a mother, especially since she left Yang shortly after she was born. She tries to claim that she's watching over Yang even though she never directly involved herself in her life, but Qrow calls out her bullshit. Even though she says she's been watching over Yang since the Fall, she had no idea she left home. She at least was good at first before she got the Maiden powers.
  • My Greatest Failure: To say that she hasn't taken Summer's death well would be an understatement. She still blames herself for all the decisions she made that led to it happening. In the present, she admits that she still hasn't accepted her death.
  • Not Quite the Right Thing: After gaining the Spring Maiden powers, she thought that the best to leave her family behind to keep them safe rather than trust Ozpin to protect them. And we all know how that went.
  • Open Secret: As far as the main characters are concerned, her status as the Spring Maiden is rather well-known amongst the group.
  • Parents as People: Yang starts to temper her resentment towards her when she sees Raven mourning Vernal, being very familiar with watching her loved one get killed.
  • Pet the Dog: She isn't pointlessly cruel, so she allows certain people to live if they surrender. When Weiss offers herself up, she allows her pilot to go to safety after their crash. She also offers to have her members watch over Harry Johnson's body to be sure it's returned to Atlas when she kidnaps CARD.
  • Please Wake Up: She does this with Vernal when Cinder kills her.

    Vernal

Vernal

Raven's right-hand woman and lover.

Tropes:

  • Butch Lesbian: She had Boyish Short Hair in the show as well as a rough bandit vibe. Here, she happens to be in a relationship with Raven.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She stops Cinder from taking her powers from her.
  • Second Love: To Raven after Summer was murdered.
  • Undying Loyalty: She will stand by Raven no matter what she decides and would even give her life for her.

    Shay Mann

Shay D. Mann

A member of Branwen's Tribe.

Tropes:

  • Death by Adaptation: Yang doesn't let him and his group live after their ambush.
  • For the Evulz: He decides to kill the pilot for no reason other than he could.
  • Kick the Dog: Not only does he do this literally to Zwei, but he also shoots him.

Mistral Police

    Commissioner Kraken

Commissioner Kraken

The Mistral police commissioner.

Tropes:

Argus

    Cotta-Arc family

Saphron, Terra, and Adrian Cotta-Arc

One of Jaune's older sisters, her wife, and their son.

Tropes:

  • Happily Married: They enjoy their time together and are raising a happy family.
  • The Lost Lenore: Saphron is also feeling the effects of losing Jaune.

Criminals

    Lil' Miss Malachite

Lil' Miss Malachite

A mob boss in Anima.

Tropes:

  • Death by Adaptation: She's still alive after her encounter with Cinder and Neo in the show. Here, she is killed by Cinder.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She deeply cared about her husband and her daughters, the Malachite twins. This the reason she wants Paul dead is for her husband and the reason she double-crosses Cinder is to avenge her daughters who were killed when Cinder killed Roman's men for failing her.
  • Knowledge Broker: One of her main jobs is the delivery of information.
  • Nerves of Steel: She isn't fazed in the slightest when Cinder threatens her life because Cinder won't be going anywhere without her help.
  • The Queenpin: She's a female mob boss who controls most of the organized crime in Anima.
  • Unholy Matrimony: She used to run the crime syndicate with her husband before he got killed by Paul.

    Paul Parrot

Paul Parrot

A rival mob boss to Lil' Miss and owner of the Parrot and Mouse Syndicate.

Tropes:

  • Ax-Crazy: He has no problem with violently torturing people who oppose him. He has a shooting range where he has people lined up so he can take out his stress on them. The blood of his previous victims are caked on the walls. He is even willing to use nerve gas provided by Watts to take out all of Mantle. Roman tells Neo to be careful because of how unstable he is.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: For all the danger he represents to the criminal underworld of Remnant, he is no match for the actual villains like Salem. Cinder cruelly points this out and thoroughly proves it by helping Neo end his life.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: It turns out that Paul is severely outclassed ones Cinder and Neo stop restraining themselves and kill all of his men.
  • Eviler than Thou: Lil' Miss describes him as the most vicious mob boss in all of Remnant. He gets this pulled on him once Cinder and Neo turn the tables on him.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: When he was younger, his mother neglected him in favor of sleeping around. After she died, he and his sister were on the streets and poor, so he turned to a life of crime to support them. One day, he came across his sister committing suicide. For all of this, he claims that this is the reason he hates women since the ones he cared about left him. This ignores the fact that it was him that tortured his mother to death and, upon seeing his sister dying, allowed her to bleed out when she started to regret it. Neo is noticeably disgusted to hear that this is the reason he is how he is.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: Roman claims he has a deep hatred of women, and he warns Neo not to do anything to piss him off. He shoots Neo after she defends Roman from him. And the idea of working for Salem annoys him to no end. Watts likely hid that fact to get him on board with his plan.
  • Off with His Head!: Neo decapitates him and gives his head to Lil' Miss.

Other Citizens

    Oscar Pine

Oscar Pine

A farm boy from Mistral who became Ozpin's new host.

Tropes:

  • Cuteness Proximity: Nora has this reaction to him. She's immediately gushing over how adorable he is. Jinn also admits that he's adorable.
  • Fighting from the Inside: He resists Ozpin's attempts to hide things from the others and does what he can to help reveal what Ozpin was hiding.
  • Only Sane Man: This seems to be his role since he is a normal person thrown into the madness of Salem's evil plans and the group's various eccentricities (especially those of Nora and Qrow).
  • Split Personality: How his merge with Ozpin seems to work in this version. He has no memory of anything that happens when Oz is in control. At least, not usually.

    Heather

Heather

A Mistral huntsman who is an old friend of Qrow.

Tropes:

    Pyrrha's Parents

Talia and Alamar Nikos

Pyrrha's mother and father. Her father is a caring and loving person; her mother is not.

Tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: Talia was physically and emotionally abusive to Pyrrha. It is revealed that her own mother was also abusive to her.
  • Ax-Crazy: Talia is vitriol incarnate. She horrifically abused her husband and daughter for any minor slight against her but didn’t truly establish herself as this until she brutally gunned down Alamar and attempted to do the same to Pyrrha. After escaping prison, she tries to kill her again.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Alamar isn’t killed by the shot to the chest, so Talia blows his head off with the next shot, caking Pyrrha in his blood.
  • Domestic Abuse: In addition to abusing Pyrrha, Talia also abuses Alamar.
  • Eye Scream: Talia stabs Alamar in the eye for the horrendous crime of sticking up for Pyrrha's well-being. It ended up causing permanent damage, as the next time we see Alamar he has an eyepatch.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Talia tries to bring up that she wanted better for her than to be raised by an alcoholic and abusive mother, but Pyrrha shuts that down immediately, not being willing to hear any of it.
  • Hate Sink: Talia is a horrifically abusive Stage Mom who doesn't care about Pyrrha beyond being a Meal Ticket for the Nikos family. Her murder of Alamar proves this.
  • Good Parents: Alamar actually cares about Pyrrha and wants better for her than Talia.
  • Jerkass: Talia is an abuser who made a girl Pyrrha wanted to play with cry.
  • Nice Guy: Unlike Talia, Alamar loved Pyrrha and was nothing but kind and loving toward her.
  • Stage Mom: Talia is this to a disturbing degree. She didn't allow Pyrrha to have a normal childhood, hit her for so much as talking to another girl her age about playing, and hurt Alamar for sticking up for her.

    Dee and Dudley

Dee and Dudley

Two huntsmen hired to protect the train to Argus.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Jerkass: While being dimwitted and overly arrogant, nothing suggested that they were bigoted.
  • Death by Adaptation: Only Dee died in canon, but here both of them are killed by Grimm while trying to protect the train.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The moment they appear, they show themselves to be completely unpleasant and in over their heads.
  • Hate Sink: Despite being only around for a short time, they prove themselves to be insufferable with their bigotry and misplaced arrogance.
  • Politically Incorrect Heroes: They are racist towards Faunus, homophobic, and openly transphobic towards Ruby.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: They think they're hot stuff for being hired to protect the Argus train, but they had no idea that the student hunters were also tasked with protecting the train.

    Maria Calavera

Maria Calavera

An old woman on the Argus Limited who joins the heroes out of curiosity.
