Crysta

Crysta is a curious and plucky teenage fairy and the main character of the first movie, as well as a major character in its sequel.
- Action Girl: She's in the front lines during the final battle and rushed to Zak's rescue when he was nearly eaten by the leveler.
- Adaptation Dye-Job: Her eyes are green in the first movie and they change to blue in the sequel.
- Betty and Veronica: The "Archie" for Zak's human, City Mouse "Veronica" and Pip's fairy, childhood friend "Betty".
- Big Good: Crysta becomes the leader of the fairies after Magi sacrifices her life energy to the fairies in order to defeat Hexxus.
- Boyish Short Hair: She sports a pixie cut and is quite rambunctious and hardy.
- Broken Pedestal: Her naive attitude towards humans starts out as idealized allies to the rainforest (like in Magi's stories), but then she sees what the logging companies do...
- Character Development: After taking Magi's place as the leader of the fairies, she becomes more responsible and mature, and less naive.
- Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Of sorts to Batty, even though he's actually wiser than her.
- The Cutie: The events of the film lead to a Break the Cutie as she's forced to watch her home get destroyed.

- Fairy Sexy: A pretty, young fairy who wears a two-piece red dress that leaves her midriff and legs bare.
- Fertile Feet: She gets this at the end, after replacing Magi as leader of the fairies.
- The Hero: A proactive girl who loves adventure, charges into life-or-death situations, and provides a guiding influence for her friends. Crysta's got this trope down pat.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Averted. Crysta's sacrifice actually brings her back to life.
- Horrible Judge of Character: Played with. She's the only person who is excited to meet Zak, but Zak isn't so much a bad person as just ignorant of how much damage his employers will do.
- Light Is Good: "Bless your eyes with magic light, I give the gift of fairy sight!"
- Nature Spirit: Well, she is a fairy (at least the winged/garden type in modern pop culture), and fairies in this universe help things grow.
- Nice Girl: Though she can be snippy with careless people and distracted to the point of seeming aloof, she's brave, courageous, friendly, kind, a Friend to All Living Things, and a loyal friend who's willing to selflessly sacrifice herself to protect her home of FernGully. She even tried to save Zak when he scared her by chasing her.
- Oblivious to Love: Doesn't seem to notice Pips' interest in her.
- Please, Don't Leave Me: Begs this of Magi right before she sacrifices herself.
- Red Is Heroic: She's a heroic character who wears a two-piece red dress.
- Rescue Romance: She saves Zak from getting crushed by a falling tree when they first meet and develops a crush on him soon after. She also saves him from a hungry goanna soon after.
- Tomboy: She's a spunky, free-spirited, daring, and mischievous rascal who enjoys playing and goofing off with Pips and his biker gang of beetle friends, and would much rather do so than listen to Magi Lune's lectures. Her short boy-like pixie cut is also evidence of her tomboyishness.
- Will They or Won't They?: With both Zak and Pips. She won't because she ultimately cannot with Zak, and it's left ambiguous with Pips.
Zak Young

Zak Young is the tritagonist of the first movie and Crysta's Love Interest.
- Audience Surrogate: Some of the fairies' less obvious traits are explained to him.
- Betty and Veronica: The human, City Mouse "Veronica" to Pip's fairy, childhood friend "Betty" for Crysta's "Archie".
- Body Horror: Played for laughs. Crysta's attempts to change him back to his original size turn him into several bizarre creatures.Batty: Oh! It's Darwin's grab bag!
- But Now I Must Go: In the end, Zak goes home to raise environmental awareness.
- Butt-Monkey: It's amazing he survives till the end of the film.
- Character Development: Starts off as kind of a callous jerk who just wants to listen to music, learns to become much more mature, brave, caring, and selfless.
- Chick Magnet: When he plays his stereo, he manages to get several female fairies to dance with him.
- City Mouse: He's from the city, which why he starts off indifferent to trees, and has more trouble adapting to the forest when first shrunk.
- Cowardly Lion: Starts out terrified of everything before rushing in to stop the leveler.
- Did They or Didn't They?: It's left ambiguous as to what he and Crysta did immediately after kissing.
- The Everyman: He doesn't endanger the rain forest out of malice, it's just his job.
- Fish out of Water: Any human shrunk to fairy size and thrown into the rain forest would have trouble, but Zak has extra difficulty adapting since he's a City Mouse.
- Liar Revealed: When Crysta discovers that he lied about the red marks being magical wards to keep the Leveler away, and humans are the ones destroying the forest. The rest of the fairies reject him and leave him alone after that.
- Literal Transformative Experience: Zak starts out as an uncaring employee of a logging company in the progress of destroying the eponymous rainforest, right up until Crysta accidentally shrinks him down to fairy size. The experiences that follow - falling in love with Crysta, seeing the beauty of the forest up close, and helping to stop Hexxus - gradually awaken his sense of empathy, and once he's returned to normal size, he leaves Fern Gully with the intention of putting a stop to any further logging.
- Men Are Uncultured: Likes pop music, lives in a city, and talks like a surfer, which makes for a culture clash with the rest of the denizens of Fern Gully.
- My Nayme Is: Spelled without a 'C'.
- Naïve Newcomer: It's implied he was one at his job, not really understanding what he was doing to the environment.
- The Rival: With Pips, mainly in their romance with Crysta.
- Sure, Let's Go with That: When Crysta is worried about the Leveler getting to FernGully, he assures her that it can't because it's trapped. When she guesses that it's because of the red marks she saw him putting on the trees being magical wards, he decides to go with that.
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Accidentally marked the tree that Hexxus was imprisoned in while trying to spray at a fly, allowing him to break free when the tree is destroyed and attack Fern Gully.
- Younger Than They Look: He can easily pass for a man in his mid-20s, but his Work Permit reveals that he is 16.
Batty Koda
Voiced by: Robin Williams (first movie), Matt K. Miller (sequel)

Batty Koda is the deuteragonist of the duology. He is a fruit bat that was used as a scientific experiment by humans.
- Artistic License – Biology: He is a fruit bat, and yet it's implied that he is such a terrible flyer because the experimentation messed with his sonar (incorrectly called "radar" in the song). While some fruit bats do have a measure of echolocation, they are not completely reliant on it to see, especially not in the light of day, and would not crash into every tree without it. He also has a leaf-nose, while fruit bats have puppy-like ones; the Australian bats to have leaf-noses are the carnivorous ghost bats.
- Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Through no fault of his own. The antenna and wires connected his brain are implied to disrupt his thought process.Batty: (To Zak) First, all these trees go. Then come your highways, then come your shopping malls and parking lots and convenience stores, and then comes—!
Zak: (flicks his antenna, causing a ZAP)
Batty: Price check on prune juice, Bob? Price check on prune juice? - Blind Bats: When Batty Koda is introduced, his eyes are clouded up and he keeps crashing into trees because human experimentation has ruined his echolocation. Krysta uses fairy magic to restore his sight, although that doesn't make him any less clumsy.
- Body Horror: Aside from several other problems he goes through, the antenna sticking out of his head is implied to be permanently affixed to it, with wires sticking right through his brain. This makes said antenna's absence in the sequel rather confusing.
- Butt-Monkey: The abuse he suffered in his past is portrayed very tragically, but any abuse he goes through on-screen is usually played for laughs.
- Captain Crash: Is good at flying, but not so good at landing. Oddly enough, this is truth in television with fruit bats, though in Batty's case it's also rather exaggerated.
- Cassandra Truth: Batty is the only member of FernGully who knows humans are in the forest to destroy it, not help it. None of the fairies believe him until Magi shows Crysta what's happening.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Batty's not entirely right in the head. A rare Played for Drama example, as his insanity is all but stated to have been trauma-induced.
- Cute and Psycho: While he is an endearing character, he's a emotionally unbalanced and unstable fruit bat due being a mistreated lab rat which messed up his mind.
- Dark and Troubled Past: He was experimented on and abused by human scientists, which is most likely the cause of his insanity.
- Diurnal Nocturnal Animal: Possibly justified, since many fruit bat taxa are diurnal in real life.
- Disney Death: He's crushed by falling debris during the final battle, and Zak finds his body after being returned to his full size. Naturally, one zap of the antenna reveals that Batty's fine, and he flies off unharmed.
- Escaped from the Lab: His backstory. He was subjected to many types of animal testing experiments.
- Freudian Excuse: His distrust towards humans was because human scientists experimented on him.
- Giant Flyer: A blend of the "Deus Ex Machina Airlines" and "Normal Flyer Seen From Small Character's Perspective" varieties. Truth in Television, as fruit bats in real life are indeed quite large.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Played for Laughs when he tries to insult Zak by telling him "only fools are positive."Zak: Are you sure?
Batty: I'm positive. [Beat] Oh, I fell for it! I should have known! - Large Ham: Well, he IS played by Robin Williams!
- Lovable Coward: Batty is an endearing comic relief that's often cowardly, paranoid, and neurotic.
- A Lizard Named "Liz": He is a bat named Batty.
- Made of Iron: In addition to the tons of slapstick he receives, the fact that he even managed to survive all those horrific experiments described in his song is something amazing.
- Meaningful Name: Twice over. He's a bat who happens to be a little crazy and erratic.
- Misanthrope Supreme: This one is downplayed. He is loyal, friendly (save for when they act reckless, at one point in the sequel at least), and caring towards his fairy friends and the inhabitants of Ferngully, but extremely distrusting to humans like Zak to the point he thinks, in a somewhat comedic fashion, it might be best to kill the human before he could harm everyone. Granted, Batty has suffered at the hands of some human beings that treated him as a lab project, and that may have been his only experience with them, even if Zak had nothing to do with that. However, once Zak gains the bat's trust, he's grown to care about Zak too.
- Nervous Wreck: Prone to paranoia and an inability to calm down his mental state.
- Motor Mouth: Tends to erupt into random chatter when his electrode is disturbed.
- Plucky Comic Relief: His crazy and unpredictable behavior is often Played for Laughs.
- Running Gag: Constantly slams into trees.
- Watch Out for That Tree!: He is a clumsy flyer that smashes into trees regularly.
Pips
Voiced by: Christian Slater (first movie), Digory Oaks (sequel)

Pips is a supporting character in the first movie and the tritagonist in the second. He is a love interest and friend of Crysta in both of the movies.- Ascended Extra: He was the tritagonist in the first movie, but gains a much bigger role in the sequel.
- Betty and Veronica: The fairy, childhood friend "Betty" to Zak's human, City Mouse "Veronica" for Crysta's "Archie".
- Crazy Jealous Guy: Does not like Zak purely because Crysta likes him and is livid when he sees Crysta dance with Zak during the Crowd Song.
- Fiery Redhead: Fiery and hot-blooded with red hair to match.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Acts cocky and belligerent, but he genuinely cares about Crysta.
- Maybe Ever After: After Zak leaves FernGully, it's left ambiguous as to whether Pips and Crysta hook up or not.
- Mr. Fanservice: Fairy Sexy meets Walking Shirtless Scene meets Loincloth? Definitely a Mr. Fanservice.
- Significant Green-Eyed Redhead: Although most fairies appear to have green eyes, Pips is the only green-eyed redhead amongst them. He serves as a tritagonist and a (possible) love interest for Crysta in the first film and is the lead male in the sequel film.
- Two Guys and a Girl: With Crysta and Zak.
- The Rival: Competes with Zak for the interest of Crysta.
- Unlucky Childhood Friend: No matter how hard he tries, Crysta seems to like Zak more than him. It's left ambiguous as to whether it stays like this after Zak leaves FernGully.
Magi Lune

Magi is the motherly/grandmotherly figure and teacher of Crysta, she is also the sprite of the forest.
- Big Good: Sealed away Hexxus the first time, trained Crysta in magic and gives her life energy to the entire fairy tribe in a last-ditch attempt at helping them stand up to Hexxus.
- Cool Old Lady: Can effortlessly speed up the growth of a seed that Crysta struggled with.
- Fertile Feet: Little plants and flowers grow everywhere she floats.
- Healing Magic Is the Hardest: Apart from Crysta having the most difficulty learning healing magic, after Hexxus is set loose Magi finds that her healing magic is no longer sufficient against his destruction.
- Light Is Good: She has a significantly lighter color pallet than Hexxus, and she's the Big Good of the movie.
- The Mentor: To Crysta.
- Messianic Archetype: She battled and imprisoned this movie's Satanic Archetype in the past, and acts as a wise healer and mentor to her people. When Hexxus breaks out of his prison, she sacrifices herself in order to give her people the means to save their home.
- Parental Substitute: Aside from being Crysta's mentor, she also acts as a motherly/grandmotherly figure to the girl.
- You Are in Command Now: To Crysta when she realises she's not strong enough to fight Hexxus.
Hexxus

Hexxus is the main antagonist in the first film. He is the spirit of pollution and destruction.
- The Assimilator: Drinks smoke and grows into a smoke monster.
- Ax-Crazy: He's so insane that he even cackles like a madman when he's surrounded by fire that he started in his Villain Song.
- Big Bad: The main antagonist who wants to destroy the ecosystem.
- Big Word Shout: In the Uncut "Toxic Love", Hexxus bellows out "REVENGE!" before composing himself to continue the song.
- Blob Monster: His first form once he's freed from the tree, a small mass of brown sludge that grows the more exhaust he consumes.
- Card-Carrying Villain: Causes harm that can lead to death and especially destruction, while loving every minute of such chaos.
- Chekhov's Volcano: Downplayed. It is implied from illustrations of him pre-release that his original source of power was a volcano.
- The Corrupter: He manipulates Ralph and Tony into destroying Fern Gully by offering them extra pay- using it to make them more likely to indulge in destructive behaviors.
- It's heavily implied that through his actions thousands of years ago, that humanity turned on nature and engaged in polluting the world.
- Dark Is Evil: Naturally the black smoke entity that turns into a demonic skeleton isn't the good guy, for as charismatic as he may be. He also manifests as a dark sludge or a gaseous wraith that displays various deranged faces.
- Destroyer Deity: As an anthropomorphic personification of decay, corruption, and destruction, this is pretty much what he is.
- The Dreaded: To the forest.
- Dystopia Justifies the Means: His goal is to turn the entire planet into a polluted wasteland.
- Ecocidal Antagonist: Hexxus, as an embodiment of pollution, maliciously spreads oil and sludge everywhere and causes severe destruction to the titular rainforest. Interestingly enough, however, his Villain Song, "Toxic Love", still implies that humans are partially responsible for his ability to wreak havoc.
- Evil Counterpart: To Magi Lune, being the embodiment of destruction to her creation.
- Evil Is Hammy: Very flamboyant and prone to singing in a film where he's one of only three singing characters. Outside of this, he is a psychotic, sadistic, and malicious embodiment of destruction.
- Evil Sounds Deep: Courtesy of Tim Curry.
- Faux Affably Evil: Acts very charismatic even when he's destroying an entire ecosystem.
- The Hedonist: Hexxus is a sentient glob of pollution who lives for self-gratifying pleasure and consumption. His Villain Song illustrates it perfectly.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Attacking a rainforest by taking control of a machine that can be turned off with a key was probably not his best idea. Subverted afterwards, only to be played straight again when he eats Crysta and she plants a seed inside him.
- Humanoid Abomination: Takes on a humanoid form after assimilating enough pollution.
- Large Ham: Expect nothing less from a villain played by Tim Curry.
- Made of Evil: Deconstructed. Due to being composed of all things negative- pollution, death, sludge, etc., he literally can’t maintain his form unless he’s literally fueling himself with it at all times, causing him to rely on Ralph and Tony to travel to Ferngully because he can’t move under his own power initially. And when Zach manages to shut down the machine powering him, Hexxus initially chokes on being being unable to breathe pollutants and his form falls apart- forcing him to undertake his One-Winged Angel as his Emergency Transformation as a means to keep him active. It’s heavily implied that being in healthy environment is ironically toxic to him and he requires a polluted environment to even survive.
- Monochromatic Eyes: Beige in his smoke form, then orange in his skeleton form.
- Muck Monster: As the spirit of destruction, his form is a byproduct of his source of power. In this case of after he is freed, he feeds off of the human deforestation machine, manifesting first as its exhaust and then from its petroleum fuel.
- Obviously Evil: Just take one look at the image of him above and try to argue that you didn’t immediately know that he was a force of evil. He even provides the image for the Animated Films examples page.
- Ominous Obsidian Ooze: initially emerges from his prison tree in the form of a tiny blob of dark brown slime, gradually expanding his mass by feeding on the Leveller's exhaust until he can metamorphose into a wraith made of black smoke. After losing control of the Leveller in the finale, he goes One-Winged Angel and assumes his ultimate form: a giant skeletal monstrosity made entirely of black ooze.
- Omnicidal Maniac: His end goal is spreading pollution, which would surely endanger life. In the movie, he makes threats on harming all creatures great and small but only seems to swipe away those that get in his way. He also sang to the idea of building shopping malls while totaling the rainforest, all of which at least puts him on this trope's edge. Nonetheless, his book version was specifically stated as destroying life whenever he could, so that version played this trope unmitigated.
- One-Winged Angel: After his gaseous form dissipates, Hexxus absorbs all the oil and fuel in the leveler and transforms into a far more terrifying creature with a Skull for a Head, a cloak made of sludge and innards made of fire.
- Perpetually Protean: Starting out as a minuscule Blob Monster composed of pollution, he's constantly reshaping himself to travel more effectively, sprouting tendrils to haul himself up the side of pipes, sprouting mouths to feed on exhaust, and growing steadily bigger. Even when Hexxus is sitting still, he's shaping himself into a new form - either sprouting a long neck to look around the Leveller or shrinking back down so he can pour himself into the ventilation duct. At one point, he even shapes himself into the form of a cobra for no apparent reason. And then after shaping himself into a solid human skeleton, he uses the Leveller's electrical systems to convert himself into a gaseous wraith - which doesn't shapeshift at all outside of the Villain Song.
- Resized Vocals: Hexxus initially takes the form of a tiny blob of brown sludge that can only gurgle incoherently and chuckle to itself in a high-pitched voice, but as he feeds on the Leveler's exhaust, he grows progressively larger with every feeding, his voice getting deeper and more comprehensible along the way. In his second scene, he absorbs enough power from the smokestacks to grow absolutely enormous, causing his voice to deepen to a low, basso growl... and then when he has to shrink in order to sneak through a ventilation duct, his voice rises to a higher, reedier tone of voice. After converting himself into a gaseous wraith, he upgrades to using Tim Curry's natural singing voice... up until he accesses the furnace, allowing him to expand into a huge anthropomorphic cloud of evil that practically dwarfs the Leveler, his Evil Laugh plunging to a satanic roar in the process.
- Satanic Archetype: He is the Spirit of Destruction. He's a Sealed Evil in a Can that proceeds to manipulate Ralph and Tony into enacting essentially a genocide by appealing to their vices and it is heavily implied it is through his initial actions prior to being sealed that turned humanity away from nature in the first place. Though you can make an argument he bears some resemblance to native Australian dark spirits, particularly the Gamilaraay Marmoo (similarly a God of Evil associated with filth bent on killing everyone).
- Sealed Evil in a Can: At the start of the film, having been trapped there long ago by Magi Lune. By the end, he's trapped in a new tree by Crysta.
- Singing Voice Dissonance: His regular voice is deep, guttural, and menacing. His singing voice, however, is very suave and seductive.
- Skull for a Head: In his One-Winged Angel form, though he also briefly created one as he was transitioning from his Blob Monster form to his smoke form.
- Slasher Smile: Mostly towards the end of the film.
- Sleep-Mode Size: It's very quick, but when he shifting from his Blob Monster form to his larger smoke humanoid one he briefly manifests the upper half of a black skeleton, which is effectively a miniature version of his One-Winged Angel form sans the fire and sludge cloak.
- Smug Smiler: His default expression.
- Suddenly Shouting: In the full version of "Toxic Love": "And after dinner, I could go for something sweet... REVENGE! Ahem... for all those years locked in a tree."
- Took a Level in Badass: In his final form, he can breathe fire and isn't dependent on the Leveler to sustain his physical form.
- Too Kinky to Torture: Listen to Toxic Love and try telling us he's not this."Hit me one time
Hit me twice...
OH! AH!
Ooooh...that's rather nice... - Transformation Exhilaration: He clearly enjoys expanding into larger forms by feeding on the Leveller's exhaust, judging by the maniacal laughter. Eventually, he's able to mold himself into a semi-solid shape, then uses a shock from the Leveller's wiring to transform himself into an anthropomorphic cloud of toxic gas for his big Villain Song... and the transformation is accompanied by a very suggestive set of lyrics that conclude with a satisfied-sounding "that's rather nice."
- Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: He's a pollution-spreading, sadistic, nature-spiting, nightmarish possible Omnicidal Maniac in a family movie.
- Villain Song: Toxic Love, a particularly awesome example.
- Villainous Breakdown: After spending a few moments doing a triumphant Evil Laugh during his final transformation, he immediately loses his cool when he realizes that Crysta is causing plants to grow out of him and spends his last moments of freedom furiously trying to rip them out.
- Villainous Glutton: Is obsessed with consumption of pollution.
Lou the Goanna
Voiced by: Tone Lōc (first movie), Gary Martin (sequel)

A perpetually hungry monitor lizard who tries to eat Zak.- Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Lou is a dark blue goanna with a red underbelly, orange legs, and black stripes.
- Anti-Villain:
- From his perspective he's just a predator hunting prey, which happens to be just about everything smaller than himself, including Zak. When Crysta angrily informs him that Zak is her friend, Lou begrudgingly spits Zak out but grouses that Crysta owes him a replacement meal.
- In the sequel, Lou begrudgingly removes a bear trap from Boof's paw with a single slash of his claws, but only does so at Crysta's request and sneers that the dog is "a toy for humans" and should be left to die.
- Fantastic Racism: He expresses nothing but contempt towards Boof, only helping Crysta rescue him because he has a soft spot for fairies, and is openly annoyed by and incredulous at her desire to help the pitbull return home.
- Malicious Monitor Lizard: He's a vibrantly colored monitor lizard who chases Zak down while singing about how he's perpetually hungry and wants to eat Zak. He begrudgingly relents only when chastised by Crysta, and in the sequel he's less malicious — reluctantly helping to remove a bear trap from Boof's paw — though he's contemptuous towards domesticated animals.
- No Name Given: He's unnamed in both movies and only called "Goanna" in the credits, with the name "Lou" being given in some supporting materials.
- Scare the Dog: In the sequel, Lou easily cows Boof by snarling at him when the Angry Guard Dog-turned-Big Friendly Dog accendentally sends Crysta flying with an overenthusiastic lick.
- Villain Song: "If I'm Gonna Eat Somebody (It Might As Well Be You)" — a song about his perpetual hunger and intent to devour Zak.
- Villainous Glutton: He spends his entire screen time in the first movie devouring everything in his path while singing about how he's perpetually hungry and wants to eat Zak.
Ralph and Tony
Ralph (l), Tony (r)
Voiced by: Geoffrey Blake (Ralph) and Robert Pastorelli (Tony)
Two humans who operate the Leveler and appear to be Zak's supervisors.- Berserk Button: Tony's a Big Eater, but he doesn't like being called out on it. When Ralph makes a remark about his eating, Tony remarks that, more than once, he's threatened Ralph's life over the matter.
- Big Eater: Tony has a large appetite. He's always eating something and his side of the controls are nearly buried under food and cooking appliances.
- Fat and Skinny: Ralph and Tony, respectively. Tony's eating habits are, of course, to blame.
- Only in It for the Money: They work for a lumber company, which is why they're tearing up the forest. When Hexxus tricks them into going to Fern Gully with "double shifts, no breaks", Ralph and Tony go along with it because they believe they'll get a lot of overtime pay.
- Punch-Clock Villain: Hexxus cajoles them into his scheme to destroy FernGully by posing as their manager through the intercom. Ralph and Tony have no idea that the trees they're cutting down can feel pain or that the rainforest is home to fairies, much like Zak did before Crysta shrunk him to her size. When Hexxus finally reveals himself, they obviously freak out at the sight of a giant smoke-demon and run away.
- Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: Once the duo finally see Hexxus, they both scream and jump out of the Leveler's cockpit.
- Solid Cartoon Facial Stubble: Ralph and Tony have stubbles on their faces, with Ralph's extending around to his ears, while Tony's is confined to the front of his face.
- Unwitting Pawn: Once Hexxus is freed and bonds with the Leveler, he tricks the duo into targeting Fern Gully directly by posing as their boss over the intercom.
