Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the new Complete Monster (CM) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.

If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread.

IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List. Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.

What goes through this thread?

    Examples
  • Cut requests. If you believe a CM has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
  • If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's CMs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
  • If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
  • Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
  • If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.

What does not go through this thread?

    Examples
  • New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
  • Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
    • Any CM link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
    • If an CM link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
  • Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved CMs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
  • Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
  • Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
    • Spelling and grammar fixes.
    • Pothole changes.
    • Minor rewordings.
    • Spoiler tags.

While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:

  1. Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
  2. If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
  3. Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.

Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.

As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their CM equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

Other than this, once again, welcome to the cleanup thread, and we look forward to your contributions!

Didn't this come up before ? I thought we decided to keep due to V cinema's weird continuity issues. (Due to the fact the writers can do whatever the hell they want) Like the fact this and Zero one are later depicted in one of those as being in the same universe and they bring back kuroto and mansume for a gag fight despite Th r fact it was explicitly meant as an alternate universe ???

The series end follows up with True Ending, then Another Ending. Kuroto, having been resurrected as a Bugster in Ep. 31, was at two lives left in the series finale. True Ending uses up one more of his 99 lives to bring him down to one life remaining, and by Another Ending, after Lazer X defeats Genm God Maximum Gamer, Kuroto's 99 lives have all been depleted. So they're set in the same continuity and universe, continuing a year after Heisei Generations Final, and some time after "Tricks": Para-DX, thus putting Masamune's CM status into question.

Zero-One is set in an AU like Build and Zi-O, but Ex-Aid's V-Cinema is part of the original Kamen Rider canon.

Cut Dan. The initial verdict was to ignore Another Ending because V-Cinema stuff was about the directors doing their own thing, which does not hold up at all in this case since Another Ending was written by the same guy who wrote the actual series.

Future reformatting should probably go here - that was largely because we had a lot to talk about, I didn't want to disrupt active cleanup, and we were talking about standardizing pages, aka "policy", but now that we've done all that I'll be taking future stuff here instead.

  • Martian Succesor Nadesico: Prince of Darkness: Professor Yamazaki is the lead scientist of the Martian Successors, soldiers of the Jovian Federation that refuse to accept the surrender of their nation. Send to study the Bosom Jump teleportation, Yamazaki experiments on the protagonists Akito Tenkawa and Captain Yurika Misumaru because of their special nature, leaving Akito as a broken man without senses and putting Yurika into a permanent coma where she would be constantly bombarded with happy memories to farm her energy for the Martian Successors' plan to take over the Amaterasu Colony and destroy it, uncaring about their civilian population. Yamazaki also shows his fascination towards Yurika, ordering her to be left naked until other scientists stopped him after considering that to be sexual harassment.
  • The Gotham City Society of Fireproof Women:
    • David Cain was a member of the League of Assassins, assigned to the creation of "The One-Who-Is-All" as a bodyguard for Ra's al Ghul. Training his daughter Cassandra since birth to fulfill this role, Cain refused to teach her to read, write, or even speak; he instead taught her how to be the perfect weapon by murdering people in front of her. One of his favorite lessons involved shooting her in a non-vital area, and if she so much as flinched he would shoot her again. When Cassandra ran away after her first assassination at the age of nine, Cain would betray the League as he obsessively tried to hunt her down. Recruited years later by Harmonia, Cain assisted in creating distractions for Batman by massacring Black Mask's forces, later attempting to cause an international incident by assassinating a Kahndaqi diplomat. Cain taunts Cassandra for becoming "a faulty sword" under Batman's tutelage but runs for his life without hesitation in a fair fight, even threatening to shoot a hostage in a vain attempt to avoid defeat. He later tries to draw out Cassandra for a final match, threatening to kill thousands with bombs set around Gotham. Cain ultimately cares for nothing except securing his "immortality" through the creation of the perfect weapon.
    • A Faulty Sword: Nemesis is the Greek Goddess of Grudges, Blood Feuds, and the Unjustly Slain. Centuries ago she created the Army of Nemesis, an unstoppable force of evil that horrified the Olympians and caused Zeus to kill her. Possessing Harmonia in modern times, Nemesis hijacks her plan to destroy the multiverse with the Army, inflicting Jason Todd with horrific visions of the Joker torturing him and forcing him to massacre a bar full of innocents after he raises his voice at her. Nemesis later tricks Wonder Woman into killing both her and Harmonia, activating the Army and sending them to destroy all life on earth so that the Olympians will starve to death, while the alternate versions of Harmonia throughout the universe will be eternally trapped in maddening insanity without the Army to end their pain. While her plan is foiled, the Army nevertheless manages to kill hundreds of innocents and four dozen heroes.
    • Motherland: Ra's al Ghul is the head of the League of Assassins, an organization dedicated to wiping out ninety percent of all human life in his egotistical desire to save the planet and rule the dwindled population. Killing thousands throughout the centuries in pursuit of his goal, Ra's seeks a male heir in the form of Batman, raising Astrid Arkham to believe Bruce murdered her mother so she'll kill all his friends and sever his ties to Gotham. Once Astrid is old enough to enact this plan, Ra's shifts focus, targeting Cassandra Wayne to become his bride and loosing Astrid to wreak havoc. Now seeking petty revenge on the city that foiled him time and time again, Ra's starts fires in the Amazon to draw out Poison Ivy, intending to use her to disperse Venom throughout Gotham so the populace will tear itself apart. Learning that he has an illegitimate granddaughter through Talia, Ra's also wipes out the entire town of Parisot in an attempt to rid himself of the potential usurper. Even after Cassandra sabotages his plan, Ra's tries to kill Bruce and Selina, revealing himself under his thin veneer of politeness to be a petty narcissist obsessed with continuing his lineage.
  • Zack Snyder's Justice League motion comic Project Justice League (link): Darkseid, following his previously foiled conquest of Earth, plans to force Superman to submit to him. With Lex Luthor bringing Darkseid to Earth, the former tells Darkseid that the pregnant Lois Lane is the key to Superman's heart. Darkseid corners and incinerates Lois as Superman arrives to her rescue, forcing Superman into a despair that leaves him susceptible to the Anti-Life Equation. In a dark future, with a brainwashed Superman into his enforcer, Darkseid reduces Earth into another hellish planet in his empire, before sieging the remaining universe. This future is prevented when Batman sacrifices himself to save Lois, and Superman drives Darkseid off. In retaliation, Darkseid leads a final invasion of Earth, with the world united against him.
  • Vol. 13: The Archpriestess is the religious leader of the Hand and a zealous worshiper of the Beast. Determined to find a new High Slayer, she massacres countless members of the Hand when they refute her claims that a next High Slayer will be born in America. The Archpriestess trains children to be nothing more than killers fully devoted to the Hand and sets her sights on young Frank Castle. She brings Frank's wife Maria back to life and manipulates him into accepting the position of High Slayer by promising to resurrect his children. The Archpriestess mentors Frank in order to awaken the power of the Beast within him and turn him into a mindless killer who will bring about the slaughter of millions upon the world. When a group of agents return from their mission in failure, the Archpriestess has their families murdered before their eyes. When Frank fails to fully unlock the Beast's power, the Archpriestess tries to kill him in order to resurrect him and begin anew, promising to kill Maria. After Frank rejects her one last time, the Archpriestess sets her sights on a mentally unstable teenager as her next candidate.
  • The Aristocrat's Otherworldly Adventure (anime adaptation): Aaron was once the eighth member of the Pillar Gods presiding over the Kingdom of Esfort. The God of Amusement, Aaron grew bored of providing humans with entertainment and decides to instead brainwash mankind into sadistic death games. Having plunged dozens of kingdoms into endless wars, Aaron personally kills the parents of Kazuya Shiina, aka Cain von Silford, before getting sealed away. With his imprisonment weakening, Aaron takes possession of a dragon, driving the monsters of the forest into a crazed frenzy, with the intent of using them to raze the Kingdom of Esfort to the ground as an act of spite for the "Old Geezers".
  • The Dragon Prince: Bloodmoon Huntress & "The Queen's Mercy": The wicked and treacherous Kim'dael is an ancient Moonshadow elf who has survived with her youth for centuries by murdering innocents and drinking their blood during the Blood Moon. Thought to be just a myth, a young Rayla witnesses her trying to kill a family of elves with no compunction at killing children. Upon her plan being foiled, Kim'dael tries to murder Rayla as well.
  • Heist (2015): Derek "The Dog" Prince is the sadistic right-hand man to Francis "The Pope" Silva, far surpassing his boss in depravity. A Torture Technician who has a lair filled with implements he uses, the Dog tortures and kills anyone who crosses Pope to "send a message", and he's shown doing just this to a small-time thug and his girlfriend to extort information out of them. When Pope's casino is robbed, the Dog goes on a warpath to find the perps, needlessly killing two homeless people just for lending out a car to the robbers before executing a pilot the burglars planned to hire. The Dog captures the ringleader of the thieves, Vaughn, douses him in gasoline, and plans to burn him alive. When Vaughn reveals he stole from Pope to pay for his sickly daughter's surgery, the Dog informs Vaughn that he's going to kill the man's daughter next out of spite, promising to make sure she suffers before she dies.
  • The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones:
    • Issues #15 & 16—"The Sea Butchers" two-parter: Emeralda Vasquez is the leader of a group of Ruthless Modern Pirates who prowl the waters around the Aleutian Islands in a stolen American submarine. When she encounters the crew of Indy's ally Katanga, Emeralda cows him into cooperating with her by having one of his innocent crewmen murdered, then shortly after tries to kill Katanga and his entire crew anyway. A vicious Bad Boss, Emeralda forces a mook who stole from her to play a game of Russian Roulette, telling him he has a five-to-one chance to survive. When he blows his brains out, Emeralda reveals every single chamber was loaded. Later, Emeralda tries to blow up a ship full of dozens of people to rid herself of Indy, totally apathetic to the idea this would wipe out all of her remaining men.
    • Issue #19—"Dragon By The Tail!": General Makimura is a Japanese mystic who attempts to capture a living dragon to unleash it off the coast of California, allowing it to ravage most of the USA and countless lives with it before he and his men take over the rest. Inevitably—and to his apathy—Makimura's recklessness cause the dragon to be freed and destroy his men and whatever else is in its path, nearly killing numerous children before being stopped by Indy.
    • Issues #26 & 27—"...Golden Guns" two-parter:
      • Count Alexander Salkovich is a wicked Russian nobleman oppressing Cossacks in southern Ukraine at the behest of his sponsors, the Bolsheviks. Salkovich conducts a steady campaign to erode their support among the peasantry in preparation for a Final Solution that will wipe the Cossacks from the face of the Earth. In confrontation with Indy, the Count shoots one of Indy's Cossack allies dead just because he can, and permits his lecherous minion Ilya Pugachev to rape Indy's female friend, stipulating only that he kill her afterward.
      • Ilya Pugachev is a slimy traitor to the Cossacks who has willingly signed on with Salkovich to help with the extermination of his own people. Ilya introduces himself vamping onto Indy's ally Elizabeth Cody, and takes Indy's intervention as an excuse to try and murder Indy by means of drawing-and-quartering. Revealing his true allegiances after this, Ilya later on once again attempts to rape and murder Elizabeth.
  • All the Sinners Bleed, by S.A. Cosby: Jeff Spearman, seemingly a caring, friendly teacher murdered in a senseless act of violence, is a sadistic monster in truth killed by one of his victims. Soon after his death, tapes are discovered of Spearman with his accomplices abducting minority children and brutally torturing them to death. Seven children are seen on video, with more victims later confirmed.
  • "The Gulf Between", by Tom Godwin: William Cullin is an officer who desires nothing so much as to make humans as obedient as robots. Sending his own to their pointless deaths in war just for his own glory, Cullin later defects to Russo-Asia and becomes the brutal head of their Secret Police. Upon learning of a powerful space craft that can assist in world domination, Cullin kills many people to possess it, including poisoning a doctor with access with an agonizing drug, so he may bomb the Earth into submission.
  • Inexhaustible Chalice: The old landlord of Lyapunovka village is a Serial Rapist who uses his power over the peasants to rape every girl that catches his eye, including children. When one of his victims tries to hide from him under the stairs, the landlord stabs her through the eye while dragging her out. He also molests his preteen servant Ilya, forcing him to strip and perform obscene acts. The landlord drowns when Ilya is twelve, but the memories of him haunt Ilya for the rest of his life.
  • "Sob in the Silence", by Gene Wolfe: The unnamed horror writer is a pedophile hosting his friend Dan along with Dan's wife and child. Taking a lust to Dan's daughter Kiara, the writer murders Dan's seven-year-old son and kidnaps Kiara to drop her down a well after beating her. Intending to leave her there for weeks or months with little food, the writer states his intent is to turn her in to a pliant and grateful Sex Slave for himself.
  • Loch Henry: Kenneth "Kenny" McCardle was a depraved Serial Killer who terrorized the remote town of Loch Henry. Hiding behind the façade of an honest policeman, Kenny and his wife, Janet, videotaped themselves raping, torturing, and killing eight people for nothing more than sadistic pleasure. Deciding to escape justice by framing his own protégé Iain Adair for the murders, Kenny massacred the entire Adair family simply to cut off loose ends.
  • Demon 79: Michael Smart, a charismatic and beloved conservative politician, is in fact a psychopathic fascist with nightmarish plans for Britain. As a child, Smart stoned a dog to death and only got worse from there. In a Bad Future where Smart is elected as Prime Minister, Britain falls under the totalitarian control of the Britannia Party, becoming a Police State where mass surveillance is implemented and the streets are in flames, with Smart's racist regime being responsible for an untold amount of deaths. The pinnacle of evil in the Black Mirror universe, Smart's cruelty is so great that even demons from Hell are said to admire him.
  • Carnivàle: Varlyn Stroud is the sociopathic chief enforcer of the New Canaan Ministry. A convicted criminal even before being chosen to be the "Archangel" of Brother Justin Crowe, Stroud is tasked with capturing and delivering Henry Scudder to him. Taking the opportunity to cause as much mayhem as possible, Stroud murders multiple people; bombs a Templar lodge in New Mexico; and torches an entire carnival, endangering the lives of several workers. Fanatically devoted to the apocalyptic plans of his master, Stroud ultimately ensures that Crowe becomes the feared Usher of Destruction.
  • The Adventures into Weird Worlds issue #2's "The Iron Door": Vashto is an agent from Saturn determined to destroy the Mechanical Brain and, with it, Earth. He fires a paralyzing ray to paralyze the immortal scientist Karra, leading to catastrophes across Earth. Presenting himself as a simple engineer, Vashto manipulates Earth's people into opening the Iron Door behind which the Mechanical Brain lies. Vashto kills Karra before departing back to his home planet, as the people of Earth can only anticipate their doom.
  • Captain America: The First Avenger: Johann Schmidt, aka the Red Skull, is a profound narcissist who believes himself a god no longer bound by humanity's rules. The head of HYDRA, a Nazi military organization, Schmidt—as revealed in the tie-in comic First Vengeance—orchestrated the Night of Long Knives to butcher his political opposition before turning the group into his own personal cult. He's first introduced killing the guardian of the Tesseract and ordering the entire village where it was hidden wiped out for seemingly no reason. He goes on to betray Hitler and the Nazi party to pursue his own goals and murders the three men sent to check on the status of his research. Schmidt uses the Tesseract to make fantastic new weapons for HYDRA, and has POWs torturously experimented on in order to replicate Dr. Abraham Erskine's Super Serum. Despite their fanatical devotion to Schmidt, he continually shows no concern for the welfare of his men, having them chomp cyanide pills when captured to avoid giving out information on him, executing one merely for surviving an attack on a HYDRA base, and activating the self-destruct sequence at another HYDRA base when the Allied forces overrun it, not caring that hundreds of his troops will be killed in the blast. Schmidt's ultimate plan is to use his new weapons to wipe out half the planet, bombing nearly every major city including his own capital, just so he can rule over what's left.
  • Iron Man 3: Dr. Aldrich Killian is the CEO of A.I.M. and the creator of the Extremis compound. To perfect the compound, Killian preys on wounded combat veterans to experiment on, leading to several violently exploding. To cover up these failures, Killian turns these veterans into unwitting suicide bombers in public places, then blames the attacks and resulting deaths on the Ten Rings and an actor pretending to be the Mandarin. Desiring the War Machine armor, Killian's forces—as detailed in the film's Prelude comic—lure Rhodey to Hong Kong, where they almost release a virus and detonate a nuclear reactor in the city; Killian later secures the armor by capturing Rhodey and torturing him until the suit releases him. Along the way, Killian also murders his comrade Dr. Maya Hansen and forcibly injects Pepper Potts with Extremis, risking her detonation. Killian's master plan is to publicly assassinate President Ellis so the corrupt Vice President Rodriguez can take control, at which point Killian can propagate an endless War on Terror for limitless profits, all because Tony Stark rejected his partnership offer back in 1999.
  • Season 1: William J. "Bill" Rawlins III, aka Agent Orange, is a sadistic CIA agent who was the mastermind of Operation Cerberus in Afghanistan, sending special forces to torture and kill targets while apathetic to any lives lost through incompetent planning. In reality, Rawlins used it to his own benefit, and when an honest Afghan officer named Zubair learned the truth, Rawlins framed, abducted, tortured, and murdered him while continuing to enrich himself via heroin smuggling. Upon receiving accolades and a potential promotion to Deputy CIA Director, Rawlins sought to close loose ends by having the remaining Cerberus squad members murdered, and is responsible for orchestrating the mass shootout between several underworld gangs that killed Frank Castle's family. When he learns that David "Micro" Lieberman, who knew of Zubair's murder, had faked his death, Rawlins kidnaps and tries to murder Micro's wife and children along with him. Upon capturing Castle, Rawlins, his career in tatters, attempts to brutally torture him to death, ranting that Castle, and even Rawlins's own subordinate, Russo, are just "grunts" who exist to serve men like him. A sadist with a god complex, Rawlins stops at nothing to always come out on top and destroy those he can.
  • "What If...Captain Carter Were the First Avenger?": The Red Skull faced by Captain Carter is just as evil as his Sacred Timeline counterpart. In this timeline, the Skull seeks global domination not by means of the Tesseract, but by a dimensional portal through which he intends to summon an Eldritch Abomination, risking the annihilation of the entire planet just so he can stand on top and willing to see everything burn should he fail. Along the way, Red Skull indulges in familiar cruelties like gunning down old men and murdering his own allies, thoroughly proving that he has no loyalty to even the Reich.
  • Covert Ops: Nuclear Dawn (aka Chase the Express):
    • Boris Zugoski is a former KGB agent turned leader of the Knights of the Apocalypse. Wanted for supplying European and the Middle Eastern insurgents with firearms, Boris works with Phillip Mason to lead a raid on the Blue Harvest train to hold French Ambassador Pierre Simon and his family hostage for $20 billion, killing Pierre's guards and wiping out most of the NATO Special Forces Team sent to stop him.
