Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the new Complete Monster (CM) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.

If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread.

IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List. Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.

What goes through this thread?

    Examples
  • Cut requests. If you believe a CM has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
  • If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's CMs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
  • If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
  • Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
  • If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.

What does not go through this thread?

    Examples
  • New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
  • Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
    • Any CM link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
    • If an CM link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
  • Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved CMs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
  • Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
  • Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
    • Spelling and grammar fixes.
    • Pothole changes.
    • Minor rewordings.
    • Spoiler tags.

While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:

  1. Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
  2. If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
  3. Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.

Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.

As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their CM equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

Other than this, once again, welcome to the cleanup thread, and we look forward to your contributions!

Quick question about 616!Annihlus, is there a reason he's specifically listed only for the Annihilation event despite being a recurring villain in the Marvel Universe?

[up]I think it's because all of his worst actions that allowed him to qualify and are mentioned in the write-up happened during that event.

Yeah, prior to that event he wasn't really treated as a major threat at all, and subsequent to it, I think there's been a sort of continuity back-and-forth over whether he's even still around. (Annihilus was killed in the climax of Annihilation and reborn from the last survivor of his hive queens in its epilogue, but whether the new Annihilus is the same entity or more like his reincarnation/son seems to be Depending on the Writer, IIRC).

Alright, I talked to Ravok about this, and with Mother Brain going up soon, Ridley's writeup needs a small tweak. Current:

  • Ridley, the "Cunning God of Death", is a bestial Space Pirate and the most recurring, hated foe of Samus Aran. Far smarter than his appearance suggests and brimming with sadism, Ridley leads the Space Pirates alongside Mother Brain in regularly organizing devastating raids across the galaxy, one such raid resulting in him annihilating Samus's colony and personally killing her parents. Ridley works with Mother Brain to enslave the Metroid race as a bioweapon that can be used to wipe out entire planets, hoping to upheave galactic civilization and institute the Pirates as the reigning power, and he further oversees the Pirates' Phazon mining operation and the horrifying experiments it is used for. When Ridley learns that Samus has wiped out all but one baby Metroid, he kidnaps the baby after slaughtering the entire Ceres Colony and hands said baby over to Mother Brain to be experimented on and reproduced into a destructive army. Regularly defying death to return more powerful than ever, Ridley's apparent final death didn't stop him from returning in the form of a clone that has continued to plague Samus and harm her loved ones, his genetic code being so full of evil and hatred that his clone's number one objective is to make Samus suffer.

Revised, plus a header:

  • The head of the Space Pirates and another of its top leaders have squared off against Samus Aran throughout multiple games:
    • Mother Brain

For those wondering, yes, I have plans to check out Manga!TP!Ganondorf for this, too. Even if the manga itself was released after Skyward, it's still sketchily canon and based on a game released before Skyward, so I'll be giving him a thorough check.

Tonight I dine on monkey soup.

  • Turnabout Sisters: Redd White is the flamboyantly narcissistic CEO of Bluecorp, a company that specializes in "buying and selling information"—which translates to the systemic blackmail of hundreds. Redd White holds the lives of hundreds of people in his sway with his industrial blackmail, such as the Fey clan, whom he ruined by exposing their part in the DL-6 investigation, and Marvin Grossberg, whom he's turned into his tormented stooge for 15 years by threatening to leave him to the police for his role in the DL-6 catastrophe. Redd has ruined so many lives he's driven a sizable amount of people to suicide, to the point it takes up the largest space in the evidence folder Mia Fey compiled against him. Redd personally murdered Mia because of this because of this, attempting to frame her younger sister Maya for it. When Phoenix Wright comes onto the case, Redd attempts to frame Phoenix for Mia's murder.
  • Investigations 2: Blaise Debeste is the Chairman of the Prosecutorial Investigation Committee—P.I.C.—whose cruel nature has led to the corruption of the justice system. A self-proclaimed sadist and bully, Blaise's greatest joy has always been ruining lives with his prosecution tactics, boasting that he has sent hundreds of people to life imprisonment after pretending he would offer them a plea bargain. Blaise has fabricated evidence, faked autopsies, and framed innocents for decades, abusing the prosecution system so freely that he hosts Black Market auctions of important evidence. Blaise is the one who drove Manfred von Karma to murder by tricking him into using a fake autopsy to send an innocent man to prison, only to then penalize The Perfectionist von Karma for fun. A dreadful father to his son Sebastian, Blaise has abused the boy for years and tried to mold him into a perfect prosecutor, and responds to Sebastian's repeated failures by bullying him into a total breakdown. Having helped murder the President of Zheng Fa to empower his body double to take his place, Blaise also helps murder reporter Jack Cameron to cover it up, and later kills Cameron's girlfriend when she comes seeking revenge. Blaise then tries to frame an amnesiac Kay Faraday for the killing, and when he is eventually exposed for his many crimes, Blaise tries to kidnap the judge's son and threaten him with death to get away scot-free.
  • The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles' The Adventure of the Great Departure & The Adventure of the Blossoming Attorney: "Jezaille Brett", real name Asa Shinn, is in truth a sadistically xenophobic assassin sent by the justice system of Britain, one of the most important members of the main conspiracy in the game, and the most despicable of them for lacking any of the good intentions of her co-conspirators. Already known as an assassin in the dark corners of London, Brett was hired by Mael Stronghart to assassinate every person who escaped the guilty verdict from the cases of Barok van Zieks, with a total of 16 victims killed in numerous "accidents", effectively being the one who made him into "The Reaper of The Bailey". Later on, Brett would be sent to Japan under a fake identity to be a student of John Wilson, only for her to assassinate him with an agonizing, undiscovered poison, and later shooting the corpse for Ryunosuke Naruhodo to take the fall. When Brett was pulled to the trial of the murder, she would make racist remarks against the Japanese throughout the trial, and at one point, break an important piece of evidence just to laugh about her untouchable superiourity. Taking pleasure in the pain of others, including those of her own ethnicity, Asa demonstrates how low the British could go in terms of hating other races.

Having Juan killed years later to cover up his impact on Celeste, Matt plans to blackmail his own assassin Shelly de Killer in an attempt to hold one over him, while having him threaten the life of Maya Fey if Phoenix Wright doesn't acquit him of Juan's murder and declare his manager, Adrian Andrews, the culprit.

Intending to spread his influence even further, Myuu intended to finish his ultimate Machine Mutant creation, Baby, and use him to subjugate the galaxy. To acquire enough energy for Baby, Myuu created a cult centering around the worship of his fake god creation, Luud, then having having pilgrims who came to worship be turned into dolls and absorbed by Luud, while executing his loyal minion Dolltaki. Noticing the powerful Saiyans, Myuu desires to capture them so he could perform experimental "reconstructive surgery" upon them that involves dissection of still-living subjects. In spite of Myuu being revealed to be programmed by Baby himself, Myuu shows full agency as he continues his genocidal plans long after Baby's influence has ended. Myuu would later return from Hell, in league with Dr. Gero, with their newest Machine Mutant creation, Super 17. Betraying Gero for being too limited in ambition, Myuu intended to use 17 to resume his galactic conquest.

With his newfound powers, Ganondorf creates an army of demons and monsters to sweep over Hyrule and kill all who would oppose him, including his own people, in the cataclysmic Imprisoning War until he is sealed away for eons by Rauru. In that timespan, Ganondorf's malice manages to leak through the seal, creating Calamity Ganon, a primal force of evil that brought destruction upon Hyrule for countless generations, with the last one bringing the kingdom's collapse. After freeing himself in the present day, Ganondorf resumes his destructive campaign by unleashing monsters, saboteurs, and natural disasters upon the races of Hyrule, promising to finish what he had started. Faced with defeat by Link and the Sages, Ganondorf swallows his Secret Stone to become the Demon Dragon, sacrificing his mind and body for the power to destroy Link and plunge Hyrule into the "eternal night" of destruction and despair. A narcissistic, sociopathic monster of a man, lacking the redeeming or tragic qualities his incarnations often have, Ganondorf believes himself to be superior to everyone else and thus deserves to rule Hyrule as he sees fit.

Upon reinventing himself as Borden, he created an annual game alongside fellow Ability-users that revolved around committing the most heinous actions to gain "points". Borden created serial killers, family annihilators, and terrorists to rack up the most points, and when he gets bored of such small stakes, he tries to take over the Island Club so as to play his "game" using entire countries as pawns in a world-wide war. Ivan also abducted Jack’s brother Ewan and rendered the boy brain dead by throwing him across a room when he tried to resist the rape, leaving it to his number two Carl Lamb to murder him. Realizing that Jack was searching for answers, Ivan waged a decades long campaign of mental cruelty against him: pretending to burn Ewan's bones on a bonfire; posting countless taunting letters to him; and even manipulating Jack's mentally ill girlfriend into giving him Ewan's toys so he could set them on fire in front of Jack. Abusing Jack's brother Ewan alongside Ivan, Carl only backed out of killing the boy out of cowardice and, upon realizing that he had been rendered brain dead, decided to exploit him as slave labour. • "The Curse of Cornelius Sigan": Cornelius Sigan was the most powerful sorcerer in history and managed to discover the secret to immortality, by sealing his soul inside a jewel that was kept in his tomb. After his tomb is robbed by a thief named Cedric, who removes the jewel, Sigan's spirit possesses Cedric's body and with it intends to destroy Camelot. Sigan casts a spell that animates all of the gargoyle statues around Camelot and instructs them to slaughter everyone in Camelot. When discovering Merlin is also a sorcerer, Sigan offers to let Merlin join him, and upon Merlin refusing, Sigan tries to steal Merlin's body for himself.
  • "The Roma Woman": Stepan Vorobyov is a crime boss and a leader of a small but brutal gang who frightened the witnesses at his trial into silence and got a much lighter sentence than he deserved. Stepan pretends to be a reformed, respectable man, but never really changes, mentally tormenting his son Andrey. After learning Andrey has a Roma girlfriend, Stepan threatens to burn the entire Roma camp unless he breaks up with her. When Andrey refuses, Stepan makes good on his threat and not only burns down the camp but stands by with his goons and shoots the survivors who try to flee, killing at least 18 people this way. Stepan bribes the government and the police into recording all the deaths as accidental, and Andrey's girlfriend Nina, the only one to escape the massacre, later remarks that Stepan isn't human at all.
  • The Dread Dormammu is a recurring threat to the entire universe, with designs on consuming Earth's reality. The ruler of the Dark Dimension, Dormammu has reduced his land to one of evil and chaos, where the only things alive are demons and Mindless Ones enslaved to him. Dormammu makes several attempts to invade Earth, be it by brainwashing superheroes or by turning civilians into Mindless Ones that subsequently turn evermore innocents into them, and he tortures Dr. Strange into submission to swipe the Eye of Agamotto. Dormammu plans to wipe out all life on Earth, then wreak havoc on the rest of the universe until it, too, has become a desolate wasteland to mimic his Dark Dimension.
  • The Force Unleashed series:
    • First game: Emperor Palpatine, aka Darth Sidious, is the despotic ruler of the Galactic Empire. Upon discovering that Darth Vader had been training a secret apprentice, Starkiller—born Galen Marek—to overthrow him, Palpatine commands Vader to murder Starkiller to prove his loyalty. Initiating a plan to wipe out all enemies of his Empire, Palpatine, through Vader, manipulates a revived Starkiller into gathering all members of Rebellion in one place. After capturing the Rebels, Palpatine intends to torture information about their allies out of them and then execute them. When Starkiller arrives to save the Rebels and defeats Vader in a duel, Palpatine tries to convince him to kill Vader and become his new apprentice. In the game's non-canon Dark Side ending, where Starkiller kills Vader, Palpatine slaughters most of the rebel leaders, then orders Starkiller to kill the latter's own mentor, Jedi Rahm Kota. When Starkiller refuses, Palpatine responds by torturing him and having Starkiller rebuilt into a cyborg, outright saying that he intends to use Starkiller as a living weapon before casting him aside as soon as he finds someone better.
    • Second game's Endor DLC: Emperor Palpatine learns that Darth Vader cloned Starkiller, but allows the latter to kill hundreds of Rebels and Imperial Forces to stop the rebellion from destroying the second Death Star's shield generator. With the Rebellion crushed, Palpatine kills Vader and sends his forces to kill Starkiller.
  • Arena of Valor: Lorion, the Nightmare Incarnate, is a magician who forms the Dark Den, a group only for evil magicians, and gleefully tortures and corrupts people that he notices "potential" within them, under the guise of "training". Fascinated by the corruptive powers of Black Magic, Lorion attempts to capitalize on them for evil purposes, including ruling Athanor for himself. When he is killed by his ex-student D'Arcy, who rejected black magic after seeing its evil, Lorion is immediately reincarnated in a younger body by the Dark Andura Stone, which amplifies his evil thoughts. Lorion then manipulates certain people and events, including turning whole village inhabitants into demonic zombies, to create a miracle that will cause untold death and destruction within Athanor, all the while happily gloating about it in front of his victim and potential witnesses.
  • Mobile Legends: Bang Bang: Hanzo, Akuma (Demon) Ninja, was once the brightest of the Shadow clan of Cadia Riverlands' Scarlet Shadow. In his quest to become the ultimate master of ninjutsu, Hanzo fuses himself with the forbidden demon Hanekage and terrorizes the ninjas nearby by killing those who will pursue him due to his crimes, letting the Hanekage devour them to obtain more power for himself. After becoming more powerful by stealing Ame-no-Habakiri and killing Hayabusa's brother along the way—without remembering—Hanzo decides to travel around the Land of Dawn to expand his list of murder victims and potential food for Hanekage.

Read back and saw where Light came up. No question his Manga counterpart counts, but I thought the anime version did too, and now I'm not sure. If Anime!Light doesn't count, I'd rather have a "(manga only)" clarifier than leave it open to be assumed.

[down]I disagree. While we can assume the original version counts, we can't assume the anime version does not. A clarification would only take two words, while the lack-thereof is ambiguous, if not misleading.

leads the alongside Mother Brain in regularly organizing devastating raids across the galaxy, one such raid resulting in him annihilating Samus's colony

Looks like you're missing a "Space Pirates" in the bolded section, and IIRC Mother Brain didn't join the Space Pirates until some time after the annihilation of Samus' colony — or was that only in the manga?

[up] x2 I think he does count since from what I heard, he has more redeeming qualities that actually get more and more subverted and his Alas, Poor Villain moment is treated as the protagonists being heroic in a similar way to say, Joffrey Barathreon.

The manga I actually read the other day, and yes, that guy is nasty. Obvious keeper.

I don't think the games make it clear when and where Mother Brain joined the Space Pirates so I think the sentence is fine in that regard, but yes it does need to have "Space Pirates" in there.

One example I am not sure about. From Foxfire

  • Complete Monster: Hongqi, son of Quon, was the son of a fabulously wealthy merchant and never had to work for anything outside of his earthbending. He takes a Lower Ring woman as a mistress and starts a family with her in secret, but gets bored of his mistress and wants to marry a richer woman. Despite dumping the poor woman, Hongqi didn't want her to move from him, so he disfigures her by giving her a Glasgow Grin and destroys her emotionally by taking away her children, preventing her from seeing them, and dumps her back in the Lower Ring; the mistress commits suicide. After a while, Hongqi grew bored of his children and finally found a wealthy young bride to marry. Not wanting his future in-laws to find out about his bastard children, Hongqi murders his own toddler-aged children by trapping them in an active kiln and shutting it closed with earthbending, cremating the children alive.

Guy is absolute prick, but this is Avatar: The Last Airbender fanfic. Avatar has huge standard, but this guy sounds like small pottatoes with nasty personal villainy. Honestly think he needs to be cut.

Cut proposal now...I think we've hit it:

At this point, I think we can safely cut Sakazuki/Akainu from One Piece. Now, previously, the circumstances of his duel with Aokiji/Kuzan were unclear. As of a recent chapter, this is no longer the case. Kuzan is revealed to have joined the fleet of the Blackbeard pirates and in a flashback recounts the duel. ...while he's clearly still a touch annoyed and doesn't cover everything, he angrily remarks that Akainu told him that he was actually upset to duel him due to them coming up in the ranks together. It's minor, but it's there.

Figured he wasn’t lasting much longer. Ever since the time skip, he’d been getting more objectionable to the World Government’s shit.

See you all in five years whenever Imu or Xebec is finally proposed.

Cut Akainu, but for Hongqi I'm willing to say keep him, even if he's compared Avatar's standard, burning your own children alive just because you got bored of your family is absolutely horrendous for what I assume is ultimately an insignificant guy in the setting
