Yeah, as much as I'd like a female sixth I don't think we're getting one here. While there is an active effort to get more female representation (Dino Charge and Beast Morphers both started with only one female ranger but also had a female ally in the main cast), actually reaching an even ratio still seems frustratingly unlikely. Well, maybe it'll be more likely if we get an original team in whatever it is they're making next- there was briefly such a team in the comics, during the period where the Omega Rangers had a blue ranger.

A female sixth (not counting a boy-girl duo like RPM) means toys that are only used by a girl, and the executives clearly think that won't sell.

Honestly, I just wanna a Sixth Ranger that's African American first. We've had Asian people before: Antonio (just ignore the spanish phrases), Cam, I think Trent, Eric.

But a sixth ranger that's a girl would be nice.

Huh now that its been mentioned, an adaptation of the Cops vs Robbers show would be a clever way of inputting a female Red Ranger.

Man would they have a lot to work with if they utilize Kyuranger's massive roster.

Tr:DL, this was an interview between the showrunner Simon Bennett and Sci-Fi about the show. I'll give the cliff notes but here's the article if you want.

https://www.syfy.com/syfywire/power-rangers-dino-fury-new-rules-show-premiere

One of the additional challenging things about this season is that we had no idea when we were writing where Ryusoulger was going. We were writing as it was still airing. So every week the writers and I would sit down and watch an episode and try to work out what we could use, how it might fit into our overall intended story arcs.

  • Just like the Disney era. Good times.

If every episode wraps up the story tidily, there's not much telling about what's going to happen next.

  • I agree, glad they're going to make the show more serialized.

I think what determines what makes for a good or bad season to adapt has to do with the "toyetic" elements. Obviously the sale of toys and integrating those toys into the show is an important part of how the show works. Also, we have to think about what is going to work for an American audience. There are culturally specific things about Sentai that may not translate so easily to an American audience. For instance, dinosaurs are universally popular with four- to six-year-olds, whereas trains? Not quite as much as dinosaurs.

  • Oh shoot, we're not that To Qger adaption.

In terms of how loyal to the stories we are, I know that in the past there have been more or less shot-for-shot recreations of Sentai seasons

  • Oh shoot the Samurai and Megaforce digs HAHAHAHA.

I'm wondering if, over the last few years, the people who make this show have felt less pressure to appeal to older viewers since the ascent of the Boom! Studios comic series, which very much cater to an older audience?

  • Interview going with the jabs!

But, you know, the adult fans who may be watching the show and love Power Rangers are the most vocal critics of the show online.

  • Okay, that's true, for better, and for worse. Then again, I did find two videos of a kid who didn't like Ninja Steel and another where a kid told a guy they were into Mech-X4 more than Power Rangers at the time. I need to find that show again.

I obviously would like for everyone who watches the show to love it. I don't like the show being hated. I don't like knowing that writers get hate mail or death threats.

  • Okay, criticisms are one thing, but death threats? Then again in my snooping, I once remember seeing a tweet a few years back about someone on a Power Rangers community board calling Betty's actress fat and ugly, and I don't stand for that.

There are, yes, ones that I've sort of inherited [from Power Rangers creator] Haim Saban. When he came back to the franchise halfway through a series he felt the show wasn't hitting the right notes in order to capture the younger audience. The requirements became very specific. It had to tick a number of boxes. There had to be a strong moral core, a lesson, there had to be a moving scene full of heart, and there had to be two ground fights and a Megazord fight every episode. And there could be no serial threads. He believed very strongly that every episode had to work as a standalone. The only linked episodes that were allowed were two-part finales or maybe an Episode 1 and 2 of a season.

  • This explains so much. I mean, you can have all of those in an episode and make it work, but for a show where they have to eventually beat the Big Bad and his villainous Five-Man Band, you can't just pretend continuity exists. I'm glad he had good intentions, but I can see why his wife wrote some of the better episodes of season 1.

The other thing he was keen on was the idea of the comedy duo, which harked back to Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. It's why both Ninja Steel and Beast Morphers had the comedy duo characters. They had to use a big pinch of slapstick because that sort of broad physical comedy appeals to younger viewers. So those are some of the rules to which the writers had to write. I felt that, quite unfairly amongst the adult online community, the writers — who are very clever people and very passionate about what they do — became blamed for stuff that was outside of their control.

  • Honestly I'm okay with slapstick if it happened to the actual rangers we were following as well. Give them their own slapstick quirks. I know some people don't like Cassidy and Devin and Betty and Ben, but for me they worked because their comedy bounced off on the rangers with all the insults/jabs (DT) and them actually being useful and helping the rangers (BM). Plus those two are better examples on how to do the comedic duo right.
  • I wonder how much fandom comments the writers and the actors consume because Pink from Ninja Steel saw something on Rangerboard or a site like that that kinda hurt her when I looked at one of the conventions. It's one thing if it was her character, but if there were people shiting on her, there's a problem. Be constructive, but don't be a dick.
  • Speaking of Ninja Steel, there was a moment in episode 19 of season 2 where Hayley was upset Victor and Monty were picked for Odius' final plan and asked why people wanted to see them over her. If that wasn't a subtle jab at Saban and the mandates, I don't know what is.
  • I understand and sympathize with the writers, naturally, but at the same time, Beast Morphers proved you can work around it.

Having said that, I think that those kinds of mandates have eased off with Dino Fury. We're able to do a lot more that I believe will appeal to the adult audience while maintaining the engagement of younger viewers. For example, we've been able to share the comedy around. There isn't a designated comedy character who will annoy the audience and distract from the Rangers' story. There's now comedy in the villains or the Rangers. It's all shared around. And it's comedy played more through character or dialogue rather than elaborate gag sequences. We've been encouraged to do that and I've really embraced it. It means we can be less predictable.

  • Good. The more comedy is shared around character, the better it helps with their characterization.
  • Encouraged by the fans or the higher ups? I hope it's a combo of both, because for every angry fan, there's one who genuinely cares and wants what's best for the show.

Does all of this show in episode 1? Well...

Episode 1, Dino Fury:

  • Pink works at buzzfeed and wants to find a true, cool story instead of something that's dumb. Girl, hustle for the grind.
  • Blue has a mom! Green and black have a dad! I ship it. Which is going to be really weird if there's a romance between Blue and Green but I'd be down for it lol. That doesn't happen though.
  • Blue and Pink really bounce off each other like Melto and Asana, but they're alike and different from each other to make them distinct. The banter between the two of them feels right.
  • Void Knight's voice acting could be better. We didn't get too much about him other than he wants the Sporix, but given Gaisorg's origins, I kinda like the contrast. Armor that found a host that know works with aliens, now armor that's going after alien eggs to use them as monsters.
  • We have an Alpha female! I already forgot her name, but's she cool.
  • The mooks were Red's guards. Now's that's playing 3D chess Void Knight
  • They didn't say "what's a Power Ranger!" The curse hasn't returned.
  • The original fight scenes actually look pretty good.
  • Oh, Red is like a hybrid of Andros and Zhane. In statis for years, and the rest of his original team was lost. I mean dead. Damn, poor guy. Looks like they're fixing their mistakes with Brody.
  • Pink and Blue have the real life acting requirements to be rangers. Namely 3 years of marital arts and 6 years of sword playfighting, I mean fencing. And red offers to train them both.

Overall, despite my digs, I think this is a strong start to the season, and from the interview, this season looks to be even more concise. I wasn't going to even watch this season and drop PR, but they got my interest again. Bring on the fury.

You can just click the link and find out

Note: This page was cut for reason: Per Creating A Work Page For An Upcoming Work, this TV series needs a release scheduling to trope, and this series doesn't have one.

Dunno why they picked that reason. Seems they cut the page yesterday

Yeah, the unreleased work guidelines got stricter kinda-recently. Well, they got a lot stricter then relaxed a bit. It was dramatic. Works need to have a release date, and at least three valid tropes (with proper context) that cite a valid source (mostly a trailer). At risk of being controversial, I think people are too cut-happy. It's very likely whoever cut it didn't know when it was coming out.

Dino Fury 1:

Still don't like that opening, though "evolution revolution" does have a nice ring to it.

Pretty obvious introduction to Amelia; she works at totally-not-Buzzfeed and is very interested in the paranormal. Kinda surprising that she's shot down so much for paranormal content though, that can do pretty well.

Dinohenge does look pretty cool, though not that believable as a historic site. Also there are six of them, because why bother hiding that there's a sixth ranger.

Thought this was another "bad guy wants the Rangers' powers" one for a bit there, but he was just trying to steal the spores

Everyone already knows what a Power Ranger is, implying some continuity. Ollie and Amelia seem to already have a very good idea of what being a Ranger entails

That is a neat way of getting minions.

Establishing that the characters have some martial arts training, not a bad idea.

Solon seems interesting. Cyborg dinosaur, why not.

And Zayto is... an ancient alien knight. Eh, sure.

I had to look it up, but apparently the Morphing Masters are a thing from MMPR? They've turned up more in the comics, though I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't comparing notes.

I understand that PR has budget limitations, but good grief this CGI...

Oh, so the shot that spoils all the zords and power-ups is in the first episode of the show as well. OK, they clearly just don't care about spoiling that stuff.

Ah, Zayto is an alien ranger whose planet was destroyed and whose previous team died. Kinda reminiscent of more than one character there, though be to fair when you're this deep in a franchise completely original ideas are hard.

Overall, it's not perfect but it was alright. I'll certainly keep watching.

Copy and pasting my reply to [up][up]’s ATT:

Oh, I remember this one. This query left it with two usable tropes, below the minimum of three. So I suspect that it was cut sometime before for not meeting the release date requirement, then cut again for being a stub recently (not by me), and that reason is due to the bug that only displays the first cut reason.

Okay, time to make the chimichangas Tommy page. It's odd. I didn't like Tommy for the longest time. Anyways, in case something happens to the page, I'll also copy over the moved entries to here.

Now, should I just name it Characters/TommyOliver? Or Characters/PowerRangerTommyOliver? Something else?

Well we can add tropes now right? From episode 1: we already have:

Amelia's either a Intrepid Reporter or Going Forthe Big Scoop
  • Cool Keys: The Power Keys, able to let the Rangers transform, Void Knight used to reawaken the Hengemen.

We need just three, right?

Portrayed by: Jason David Frank

The first Green Ranger. The first Sixth Ranger. THE Ranger.

Thomas James "Tommy" Oliver - The character that became the face of the franchise. Tommy is the longest-serving ranger in the show's history and thus had the longest character arc. Initially the new kid in town, Rita notices Tommy's skills as a martial artist and brainwashed him to become the Green Ranger, using him to defeat the Power Rangers. The other Rangers break her spell and he eventually becomes the Sixth Ranger. Tommy would become the Breakout Character that helped cement the popularity of the series. He would go through a few power changes (Green Ranger, White Ranger, White Ninja Ranger, Red Zeo Ranger, Red Turbo Ranger, Black Dino Ranger) and be the undisputed team leader for roughly three seasons. Originally a good-natured, absent-minded goofy jock, Tommy becomes a mentor figure to several ranger groups through Character Development. As the most recurring ranger in the series, his tropes are classified either as series-wide, or by series they appear in.

Tommy's appearances as a main Ranger, and the Super Sentai characters that inspired them, are:

Series-wide tropes:

  • The Ace: This is the original Sixth Ranger after all.
  • Artifact of Power: By the time of Power Rangers Ninja Steel, he has a unique Master Morpher, which lets him switch to any previous Ranger form of his choice.
  • Blessed with Suck: Part of being more recurring than other Rangers is that he's hit with this more often than other Rangers. His Green Ranger powers would originally fluctuate and cause him pain, the Zeo Ranger powers were unstable for the entire team, and during part of his tenure as the Black Brachio Ranger, he was trapped in invisibility.
  • Catchphrase: "Aww man..."
  • Composite Character: Tommy's multiple Ranger identities were all different individuals in the Super Sentai original.
  • Decomposite Character: Aspects of the White Ninja Ranger and Red Carranger were split between three and two people, respectively.
  • Discard and Draw: The first Power Ranger to go through this trope, and also the most frequent.
  • Enemy Without: A somewhat recurring plot of Tommy's is having to fight against his doubts and demons given physical form, either as a Monster of the Week, a robot with all of his moves psychologically manipulating him, or something else. These battles often specifically invoke his time as the Green Ranger.
  • Fleeting Passionate Hobbies: One MMPR episode had him really interested in Football. Later episodes didn't mention this. Then there was driving during Turbo. Then there was paleontology.
  • The Four Gods: By a string of coincidences, Tommy has had powers and mecha of most of the Four Gods as his primary abilities, including their color schemes. This is in part due to his White Tiger Power being adapted from Gosei Sentai Dairanger, the Super Sentai season that directly invoked the Four Gods. However, his associated zords even predate that season and extend to later seasons:
    • The green Dragonzord of the Not Zilla variety; Seiryu is traditionally a blue or green serpentine dragon
    • The aforementioned White Tigerzord, directly invoking Byakko
    • Zeo Zord V, the Red Phoenix, similar to Suzaku
    • The black, er, sauropod, the Brachiozord. However, the Black Brachiosaur is a carrierzord, like Tor the Turtle from the Dairanger season, keeping the theme going even further. Considering some of the depictions of Genbu, it's not too farfetched to make comparisons, as they're both thick-bodied reptiles with a serpentine neck and head. If the Brachiozord had a second, shorter necked head on the opposite end, it would be a dead ringer for Genbu.
    • If the White Ninja Ranger's White Falcon and White Shogun are included as part of the MMPR powers, the one series to break this trend was Turbo, where he used a red car. This Zord was gifted to and shared with T.J., however.
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Jason, becoming the first pair of true rivals among Ranger teams. He's also friendly with Rangers in general, but Red Rangers seem to have a bit of competitiveness about them, so this can also extend to his chosen successor T.J., and other Red Rangers. "Forever Red" has Jason and T.J. starting an argument with others by proclaiming their own merits, as Tommy walks off into the sunset.
  • Happily Married: Eventually, to Katherine "Kat" Hillard.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: A recurring weapon in his arsenal is either a sword or a short sword.
    • Green MMPR: Sword of Darkness (when evil); Dragon Dagger
    • White MMPR: Saba the Tiger Saber
    • Red Zeo: Zeo Power Sword/Laser Blade
    • Red Turbo: Turbo Lightning Sword
    • Black Dino: Black Brachio Staff (turned upside down and used as a sword as early as its first appearance)
  • Kiai: His distinctive "sikKEYAHHH!" when fighting. Mocked by Lord Zedd at one point.
Lord Zedd: Are those "hiyahs" really necessary? Here, I'll do some!
  • Large Ham: A consistent addition to his characters, in and out of costume.
  • The Leader: Even among Red Rangers, in Power Rangers Wild Force's episode "Forever Red". He willingly shares this role with Jason when he shows up.
  • Living Legend: By the time of Dino Thunder, his reputation has surpassed Jason's, due to having been four colors (green, white, red, and black), and having been leader of three teams of rangers. Both in and out-of-universe, he is considered the "Greatest Ranger Ever", and for good reason.
  • Loud of War: You will hear him on the battlefield.
  • Two First Names: Tommy and Oliver are pretty common first names.
  • Unrelated in the Adaptation: The Green and Black rangers that inspired Tommy had relatives important to their series' plots. By virtue of marrying a/the Pink Ranger of MMPR/Zeo/Turbo, this means the inverse is true as well. Each of Tommy's inspirations that didn't have a relative on their teams was adapted to have a spouse who was on their team.

Also portrayed by: Michael R. Gotto (as a child, Alien Rangers)
Voiced by: Adrian Fogarty (Latin American Spanish), José Gilberto Vilchis (Latin American Spanish, remastered version), Carlos Díaz (Latin American Spanish, as a child in Season 2), Enzo Fortuny (Latin American Spanish, as a child in Alien Rangers)

The original Sixth Ranger of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. Originally brought in under Rita Repulsa's corruptive influence under the "Green With Evil" five-part storyline, Tommy would eventually be reformed by its end, and would become one of the greatest rangers of all time.

  • Adaptational Badass: His Green Ranger counterpart in the Zyuranger series was no slouch but the way Tommy's been portrayed in MMPR has been taken to near Memetic Badass levels. In the Japanese series, while Burai was a dangerous and powerful fighter, he was still defeated and beaten down decisively by the Red Ranger in the end. Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, however, edited out the final scenes of the Red Ranger cutting down the Green Ranger, thus making Tommy look invincible and nigh unbeatable. His White Ranger incarnation is an even bigger example of this. Whereas Tommy as the White Ranger was able to defeat Goldar and multiple other monsters all at once, his Kiba Ranger counterpart from Dairanger was nowhere near the most powerful member of the team and was, in fact, taken down by that show's Red Ranger with a single punch. Back to Burai, Tommy's not as plagued with his counterpart's inability to join the fray, especially after he regains the Green Ranger powers.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Even as a villain, Tommy was a good person who was Brainwashed and Crazy when he fought the Rangers until the spell was broken. Burai's villainous actions, on the other hand, were him acting on his jealousy towards Geki and of his own free will and had to be talked down.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: He isn't introduced as a vengeance obsessed villain like Burai or a pervert like Kou.
  • Age Lift: His Dairanger counterpart Kou was a nine-year-old boy.
  • Animal Mecha:
  • Blessed with Suck: The Green Ranger powers become this in Season 2. As his powers fade, they become unstable, fluctuating unpredictably, causing Tommy great pain whenever that happened. Their weakening state also leads Lord Zedd to focus much of his monsters on Tommy in order to drain them faster.
  • Bling of War: As the Green Ranger, he had a solid gold chest plate. As the White Ranger, he had one that was gold mixed with black and brown.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Why he was the 'Evil' Green Ranger for a while.
  • Breakout Character: For the series, but established during the Mighty Morphin' run especially. The producers intended him as a temporary visitor who departed after the "Green Candle" saga. Following his withdrawal, however, the fans wrote torrents of heartfelt letters and pleaded for his return. These fans certainly got their wish, as Tommy eventually became the leader of the Power Rangers and practically the face of the franchise at the time.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Subverted after "The Green Candle." After he loses his powers he disappears completely without explanation until "Doomsday Part II," four episodes later before vanishing again until "Return of an Old Friend Part I" then again in the second season, before remaining for good.
  • Co-Dragons: As the evil Green Ranger with Goldar.
  • Composite Character: For these three seasons, he combines Burai and Kou. And by complete coincidence, he's very similar to Soukichi Banba as the Sixth Ranger turned leader.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • As the evil Green Ranger he could take on several rangers by himself and defeat them easily. His first defeat was handed to him by the megazord. After that, they had him doing his own thing for a while but coming whenever the other Rangers summoned him (this had to be done to keep him in time with Burai). Then came "The Green Candle", where he was curb-stomped himself.
    • He then does this to Goldar in Season Two unmorphed after Lord Zedd drained the last of his powers. After this, Goldar was never the same again.
    • In the Season Two episode "Something Fishy", he (as the White Ranger) single-handedly defeats four past fish-based monsters, without suffering so much as a scratch.
    • He's on the receiving end of one in his battle against Lord Zedd, where the emperor completely kicks his ass into next week in a one-sided curb-stomp.
  • Darker and Edgier: His intro is easily the darkest story of the original Rangers.
  • Decomposite Character: He takes on part of Tsuruhime of Ninja Sentai Kakuranger. Tommy retains her role as the White-costumed Supporting Leader of the team with a Rookie Red Ranger. Tsuruhime's costume and "Beast General Fighter" Mecha were used for the White Alien Ranger, her Crane Mecha was given to the Pink Ninja Ranger as the Pink Crane Zord, and her "Giant Beast General Fighter" Mecha was shared by the White and Pink Ninja Rangers as the White Shogunzord. "Holy Stealth Beast Tsubasamaru", an independent Mecha not assigned to any one individual, became the White Falconzord.
  • Determinator: In "Green No More" Part II, unmorphed, exhausted and powerless, he knocked Goldar on his butt.
  • Discard and Draw: It happened to the full team, but it's associated with him more than anyone, because he traded powers before them during this season.
  • Distressed Dude: He was victim to this several times, if he wasn't off lollygagging or who knows. This is of course because the Sentai Stock Footage didn't involve the Sixth Ranger unless they had no alternative.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: For the first stretch of episodes (forty give or take) he was the most hostile towards Bulk and Skull due to them trying to force themselves on Kimberly in his debut. Upon returning in "Return of an Old Friend", he mainly writes their antics off with laughter like his teammates. Probably justified as he's gotten used to them enough to know they're ultimately harmless compared to the aliens he fights.
  • Empathic Weapon: Saba the talking sword gives him advice.
  • Evil Is Hammy: As the evil Green Ranger he was hammier than Rita.
  • Evil Laugh: Had one when he was the evil Green Ranger.
  • Fake Shemp: In a sense. When Tommy awakens after Rita puts a spell on him, the silhouetted person getting up is his Zyuranger counterpart, Burai. You can tell its Shiro Izumi and not Jason David Frank by the hair, and because "Tommy" is wearing what Burai normally wears when he's not suited up, with the broad shoulder pads.
    • This gaffe appears again, much more clearly, in the episode "Shellshock". In it, when the Green Ranger appears, his helmet is off, and one can clearly see Burai instead of Tommy.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Phlegmatic.
  • The Generic Guy: To an extent, his only unique characteristics are just being Kimberly's boyfriend, his rivalry with Jason, and forgetfulness. It goes to a full extent once both Jason and Kimberly respectively leave. When you take away the coolness factor, you'll realize he doesn't have much in the way of a distinct personality. In fact, even on this very page, despite his character having the longest list of tropes, only two of them have to do with his actual personality (Determinator and Large Ham).
  • He's Back!: Happens twice. The first time happens in "Return of an Old Friend", in which Zordon temporarily recharges his Green Ranger powers. The second time is during "White Light" where he gains the stronger White Ranger powers after having permanently lost his Green Ranger powers.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After The Sword of Evil was destroyed the spell was broken.
  • Incest Is Relative: Implied in the episode "Wild West Rangers", wherein it's implied he and Kimberly are both descended from Kimberly's ancestor and the White Stranger.
  • Knife Nut: His Dragon Dagger, which doubles as a flute.
  • Knight of Cerebus: When he was under Rita's spell in the "Green of Evil" five-parter. Up until that point, all the Rangers problems were wrapped up in less than 30 minutes.
  • Large Ham: Unlike Jason, he's a passionate guy even when he's not morphed.
  • The Leader: He was promoted to this trope when he became the White Ranger.
  • Leitmotif: "Go Green Ranger Go"/"White Ranger Tiger Power", used often as Theme Music Power-Up.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He's more likely to cover up his muscles than Jason but still, he offers quite a bit of eye-candy.
  • Rapunzel Hair: He started out almost shoulder-length hair, and come Season 2, it got much longer.
  • Rated M for Manly: Tommy's masculinity rivals Jason's.
  • The Rival: He's introduced as Jason's opponent in the finals of a karate tournament and they end up tying, which establishes their relationship immediately. Played with to a degree, as he and Jason get along perfectly fine in the beginning, but Tommy's time as the Green Ranger sparks some tension between them that takes a few episodes to resolve.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The manly man to Billy's sensitive guy.
  • Sixth Ranger: Trope Namer alongside his initial counterpart Burai.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: His Zyuranger counterpart, Burai, bit the dust.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: He has more screen time than the other original rangers put together and would later end up with the longest tenure.
  • Stable Time Loop: Fan theory is that Tommy's clone Tom is also his ancestor. This adds one more bit of Memetic Badass: Tommy willed himself into existence.
  • Super Soldiers: What the other Rangers suspect the White Ranger is at first.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Extremely tall and immediately catches the eye of Kimberly in his introductory episode. Trini even calls him gorgeous.
  • Tangled Family Tree: Tom, David, Sam, the White Stranger...
  • Team Member in the Adaptation: Played With as the White Ranger, whose counterpart Kou never fought alongside the Zyurangers. However, the Rangers here are already using the Dairanger mechas by the time Tommy becomes the White Ranger.
  • Took a Level in Dumbass:
    • When he makes the transition from Evil Green Ranger to Good Green Ranger, he does some stupid things like constantly forgetting his communicator and getting captured by Putties. They even have an entire episode focused on his forgetfulness. This is simply because the footage of his Sentai counterpart was limited.
    • On an unrelated note there's one episode where he's training for football and when he tackles a football dummy, he gives it a roundhouse kick. The look on Ernie's face is priceless.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: According to the profile card with the Dragonzord toy, Tommy's favorite subject was history. His favorite food was Corn Flakes and raisins. Tommy's hobby was playing the blues on a flute.
  • Unrelated in the Adaptation: Unlike Geki and Burai, Jason and Tommy aren't brothers.

     Zeo Ranger V - Red

Zeo Ranger V

After the destruction (it didn't last) of the Mighty Morphin powers, the rangers had to seek out the Zeo Crystal for their repowers. Tommy found his Zeo Subcrystal in a Native American Village as a child. After having his original age restored, Tommy became Zeo Ranger V - Red.

  • Badass Native: His Native American roots become the focus of some storylines.
  • Catchphrase: "Aww man!"
  • Criminal Amnesiac: Had his mind messed about by Prince Gasket in "King for a Day."
  • Evil Is Hammy: In "King for a Day," Prince Gasket brainwashed Tommy into thinking he was their king and that the other Power Rangers were his enemies. He then proceeds to act just as hammy as he did when he was the evil Green Ranger.
  • Evil Laugh: Got it back when he was brainwashed in "King for a Day."
  • The Hero: After a year and a half of being a team leader as the white ranger, Tommy finalizes his transition by becoming Zeo Ranger V - Red.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: His signature weapon is the Zeo Sword, as the tradition with most Red Rangers. This is the first season when a true sword was his main weapon.
  • Law of Chromatic Superiority: As the Red Ranger, Tommy is in charge, gets his own individual Zord, and is usually the one to use the Battle Wheel.note
  • The Leader: Even lead the bad guys at one point.
  • The Masquerade Will Kill Your Dating Life: In the infamous three-part "There's No Business Like Snow Business", Tommy rescues a famous snowboarder from going over a cliff. She develops feelings for him but receiving Kim's earlier letter makes him hesitant about starting anything with her. Nothing comes of it due to his ranger duties getting in the way of him getting to know the snowboarder and eventually she dismisses him as a flake when he bails on her the second time.
  • Official Couple: Used to be with Kimberly in the Mighty Morphin' days but she breaks it off. After a failed attempt of getting with a snowboard champion, he starts a casual relationship with Katherine and it's implied by the end that they're going steady. The Christmas Episode is stated to be canon with Tommy and Kat being married with children (at least in broad strokes).
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: His outfits are less fanservice-y now, but the trope still applies.
  • Two First Names: His first and last names can both be first names.

    Red Turbo Ranger

Red Turbo Ranger I

Voiced by: Daniel Abundis (Latin American Spanish)

They drive cars now. Tommy became the Red Turbo Ranger during the time between Zeo and Turbo. After graduating, he spent his time on the race tracks.

  • Cool Sword: His Weapon Of Choice is the Turbo Lightning Sword.
  • The Hero: At least for the first half until his departure.
  • Names The Same: Technically both Tommy (Thomas James) and T.J. (Theodore Jay) are "T.J." Red Rangers leading the Turbo team.
  • Official Couple: With Kat.
  • Older and Wiser: As Tommy has been a Ranger for more than five years, he has matured more and is less reckless.
  • Parental Substitute: To Justin before his departure.
  • Put on a Bus: Halfway through, so he could go to whatever really accelerated program takes you from high school to Ph.D. in less than seven years. Didn't appear again until Power Rangers Wild Force (for the "Forever Red" special) and Power Rangers: Dino Thunder.
  • Take Up My Sword: Leads his team to hand over the Turbo powers, to a new team. Of course, this means Tommy would bequeath the Turbo Lightning Sword to his successor, Theodore Jay "T.J." Jarvis Johnson

    Black Dino Ranger

Black Brachio Ranger

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/prdt_rg_tommy.jpg

I may be old, but I can still pull it off.

Tommy acquired a doctorate in paleontology after his Ranger days, even finding the original three Dino Gems. When Mesogog started attacking Reefside, he found himself the mentor to a new team of Rangers that bonded with the Gems. However, it wasn't for long that Tommy would once again join the battlefield as the Black Ranger with the power of the Brachiosaurus after bonding with the Black Dino Gem. He also gains the power of invisibility when unmorphed.

  • Adaptational Badass: His Abaranger counterpart is badass, but he's not a Living Legend like Tommy.
  • Adventurer Archaeologist: He's a doctor in paleontology and an experienced Power Ranger.
  • And Starring: Jason David Frank is the last to be credited, but is featured with this.
  • Badass Beard: He's grown a pretty cool-looking patch of stubble on his chin since we last saw him.
  • Badass Bookworm: Managed to earn a Ph.D. since graduating, and still kicks as much bad-guy butt as before.
  • Badass in Distress: In some episodes.
  • Badass Teacher: Science teacher at Reefside High.
  • Big Good: Mentor to the team.
  • The Big Guy: The most experienced fighter.
  • Broken Ace: If the events of "Fighting Spirit" are any indication.
  • The Bus Came Back: His last appearance as the main character before this series is Power Rangers Turbo.
  • Cerebus Retcon: You know all that dark stuff that happened to Tommy in the first five seasons? It all comes crashing down. "Fighting Spirit" in particular lends itself to this.
  • Cool Old Guy: Though not old by any stretch (his actor turned 31 near the end of filming), he is this compared to the other Rangers given the age gap between them.
  • Cool Teacher: He's a school teacher and a Power Ranger.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: The Black Ranger.
  • Deadpan Snarker: "We can talk about your Dino Easter Egg theory..."
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: In an early episode, he gets attacked by a T-Rex before he got his powers. He proceeds to kick it in the face, being a complete badass.
  • Four Is Death: He's the fourth Ranger on the team and is wearing his fourth color overall. Over the course of the series, he gets frozen in amber, hit with two different instances of Power Incontinence, and is briefly put in a coma.
  • Hero of Another Story: Three different stories to be exact.
  • He's Back!: Happens twice, when he morphs for the first time, and later when he recovers from being in a coma with access to Super Dino Mode.
  • Hot Scientist: A male version.
  • Hot Teacher: If you like older guys.
  • Invisibility: His civilian power. Was even stuck like this for two eps.
  • I Was Quite a Fashion Victim: Kira is very amused by a photo of his MMPR-era mullet. Tommy retorts that it was the style at the time. In "Fighting Spirit", his own subconscious gets in on it:
White Ranger: Finally cut that hair, huh, Tommy?
  • Mentor Archetype
  • Older and Wiser: Compared to the Mighty Morphin to Zeo days.
  • Power Incontinence: Twice; the first time, he got stuck in his morphed form by the White Drago Ranger, and the other time, he got stuck in his invisible form.
  • Retired Badass: At first, though it's not long before he takes up a morpher once more.
  • Same Character, But Different: Entirely justified considering it has been six seasons since the last time we saw him (not counting Forever Red, where he was more or less similar to how he is in this show).
  • Seen It All: Tends to give off this vibe at times. Then again, he is considered by many to be the greatest Ranger in history for a reason.
  • Stern Teacher: Especially when compared to Randall, who is literally an enemy.
  • Still Got It: Though it's not like he ever lost it.
  • Supporting Leader: He's a veteran Ranger, but Conner's still the actual leader of the team.
  • Team Dad: For the Rangers.
  • Unrelated in the Adaptation: By viture of his pre-existing relationship with Cat, he has no connection to Elsa, whereas Asuka was Jannu's husband. This also extends to and doubly so for, Zeltrax as Mizuho/Geildon was Jannu's brother, thus Asuka's brother-in-law, whereas Zeltrax wasn't related to Elsa to begin with, and so isn't Tommy's brother-in-law. And that's without getting Snide not tied to Zeltrax like Neo-Geildon was a clone of his namesake.

I'm not done. I've got to rewrite some of these as I merge them, and I'm leaving them in their original places as well, until I'm actually done.

Okay, now I'm mostly done.

  • Are there any glaring issues in that future page?
  • Does anyone have a preference for a page name?
  • Could someone volunteer to do the redirects on the other pages?
  • When I make the page, could someone add a page image for Tommy himself? And maybe an image for the White Ninja Ranger, if there's one that matches his other images?
  • How do you all want to handle Drakkon? Another subsection that redirects to his comics entry?

Void Knight looks like a later ranger to me. Not just cause the Japanese counterpart did it, but he seriously reminds me of Koragg. And his sword has a morpher like option that convinced me. I actually thought this was the case before checking the Super Sentai page on Ranger Wiki.

I'm really liking this. I hope the battle music feels more exciting than the theme song, though. Usually the Megazord stuff. The voice acting I admit is kind of eh.

Also, I learned Youtube is working on uploading all the Disney re-versions of MMPR Season 1. It's not that special, but I really liked how Titanus was summoned in it. Also, I didn't realize they got rid of Bulk and Skull's laughter in the second theme song(that was the best part!). I did hard notice the voices all sound much more kidified(which I felt was pointless. I get the toy subtitles. I can understand the wham bam pow effects, since it's still a show that depicts violence. Even MMPR Season 2 had more flashy effects not that differently. Season 3 only toned down a little bit of violence by cutting all the Shogun Megazord stuff down(the fight with Trash Mouth, mainly, got some complaints), but admittedly the Red Ape Ninjazord's punch finisher is a bit scary-looking. A realistic ape with a powerful roar and shown in a way that's meant to try and create a nightmarish face? Yeah. Blue Wolf Ninjazord is only slightly less. Of course, due to how kickass it was, I'm sure it barely got noticed anyway. They nailed the choreography very well with the set of fights.

Hilariously the Movie's Ninja Megazord is way toned down outside of the nutshot, which was a comedy thing anyway. Though that movie hs its dark moments on its own(freaking having parents in a plot that would all be killed off? Hot damn, Ivan Ooze. You're no complete monster, but kudos for being a well-written and deadly villain. Besides, nothing like showing off how neat Rita and Zedd are, as they both not just cheered for the Rangers, but this actual thing still became part of who they are in the show. They have clear standards and legitimately love each other. Though I feel like it's more on Zedd's part than Rita's. Their rivalry with the Machine Empire later actually was really cool, especially since it allowed them to be a third party in terms of plot. They didn't like to help them, but it showed they have their own priorities and lots of depth to their character. It's only kind of sad that Rito and Goldar got killed with the Zordon Wave despite both of them legit having good in them. Ecliptor too, showing that evil is just a concept, and that it has nothing to do with one's heart or feelings alone.

Rito wasn't in the final battle, actually, due to Real Life Writes the Plot: his/Gashadokuro's costume was accidentally destroyed in Japan, along with those of Gasket/Kaiser Buldont and Archerina/Multiwa. No clue what happened to Baboo, who is never seen again after the Zeo premiere.

And if it means anything, Squatt, Rygog, and Porto were seen with the UAE army, but don't explicitly get "dusted," though Goldar and Elgar do. Master Vile is last seen at the banquet in the first In Space episode.

I'm still mad that the Z wave killed so many characters I liked. Looking back on it, it looks like it just killed "monsters," because Rita and Divatox, the two "human" bad guys, were fine. No idea why Zedd made it out alive. Only thing that I can think of is that Zedd's not actually a monster, which, I guess that makes him a human? That I guess somehow had all his skin flayed off?

[down]Never heard of the Zedd thing, but an early episode of Turbo someone did come to Earth to tell Dimitira that she had a twin sister, and Dimitria and Divatox were played by the same person...

I've heard there were plans to make Zedd Zordon's brother, and Divatox Dimitria's sister, and thus a corrupted Eltarian and Inquirian respectively. So maybe that's why they were spared.
