Emblem of the Sangonomiya Clan (and Watatsumi Island)
On the westernmost end of the Inazuman archipelago lay the the islands of Watatsumi. Ruled autonomously by the Sangonomiya Clan, currently led by Kokomi, its people worship the serpentine deity Orobashi, who according to legend rescued their ancestors from the underground nation of Enkanomiya, and whose death at the hands of the Raiden Shogun lay at the root of centuries-old tensions with the Shogunate. In the present day, with the Shogun ratifying the repressive Sakoku and Vision Hunt Decrees, these tensions would erupt into civil war, with the ensuing resistance from Watatsumi having grown their ranks with dissidents from lands otherwise controlled by the Shogunate.

Pearl of Wisdom
"Respect must be given to the will of every creature. Each fish in the ocean swims in its own direction."

Rarity: 5★
Element: Hydro
Weapon: Catalyst
Constellation: Dracaena Somnolenta, the Sleeping She-dragon

Divine Priestess of Watatsumi, scion to a distinguished clan of clergy who continue to propagate worship of Orobashi even centuries after its death, and leader and strategist of the Sangonomiya Resistance. She provides shelter to people who fear losing, or already lost, their Visions and people who chose to fight back against Inazuma's state of affairs, even as she struggles to take on so many responsibilities for a young lady of her age. After escaping their first encounter with the Raiden Shogun, they meet Her Excellency at Watatsumi, becoming a Captain of her Army to help the rebellion face off against the Shogun's Army on their attack.

Kokomi mostly provides healing and defensive support, but not to the detriment of her offensive prowess, summoning phantasmal fishes through her catalyst to attack enemies. Her Elemental Skill, Kurage's Oath, summons the Bake-Kurage, a phantasmal jellyfish, to periodically drench foes and heal allies around it, while her Elemental Burst, Nereid's Ascension, equips her with the Ceremonial Garment, a raiment made of Hydro energy, which allows her normal and charged attacks to simultaneously heal her allies, enhance the damage potency of both as well as of the Bake-Kurage, increases her flinching resistance, and allows her to walk on water.note
  • Ambiguously Human: Kokomi loves diving to unwind, and while this might seems normal at first, a Serenitea Pot conversation with her at Friendship Level 7 implies that she can breathe underwater (she came up with a solution to the Traveler not being able to breathe underwater on the spot, implying she doesn't need to), making it likely that she (or even the entire Sangonomiya Clan) is not fully human. There is also a belief in-universe that the Priestesses of Watatsumi Island are descended from Vishaps. However, in the v3.8 event Secret Summer Paradise, she assures Klee that she's just a normal human after being asked if she's a mermaid.
  • Animal Theme Naming: She uses fish names for the army squads (like Herring, Stingray and Swordfish). Her pen-name while exchanging mail with Yae Miko was "Sole of the Deep."
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Her Burst gives her the ability to Walk on Water during its duration. It's neat and handy as it sounds for exploration purposes, but the fact that it's locked behind a Burst makes it a novelty at best, since players wouldn't want to waste Energy just for a Mundane Utility. At the very least, this perk is useful when fighting enemies near deep bodies of water to prevent Kokomi from being forced into a swimming animation, which would disrupt the flow of combat.
  • Badass Adorable: Kokomi is one of the most intelligent people in Inazuma, having almost singlehandedly kept the Resistance afloat with her strategic planning. When she's not leading her forces, she shows a perky, youthful side, such as her fascination for reading, habit of describing emotional shifts in terms of "energy levels," and confiding to the Traveler her insecurities and vulnerabilities.
  • Badass Bookworm: Reading is Kokomi's favorite pastime when she is not busy with her leadership duties. Her favorite subject, of course, is in military treatise. In her idle animation, she can also be seen reading a copy of A Legend of Sword written by "Zhenyu"/Xingqiu.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Her character demo trailer showcases her gracious hand-to-hand techniques when fending off Hydro Slimes. Much like Diluc though, she doesn't display this prowess in-game.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: When she learned that some of her soldiers attempted to sabotage peace talks with the Shogunate, she briefly gets snippy with them, in contrast to her usual perky demeanor.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Just when the Resistance seems on the brink of defeat at the second one-third of the Inazuma Archon Quest, Kokomi appears not only bringing reinforcements, including Kazuha and Beidou, turning the tide and forcing Sara and the Shogunate forces to retreat.
  • Boring, but Practical: While not particularly flashy in addition to Kokomi's inherent inability to land critical hits, the Bake-Kurage applies Hydro constantly and heals pretty well, which lends itself well to different playing styles.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Despite her intellect and stature, Kokomi doesn't like to work any harder than she has to and would rather stay in her room reading novels than lead an army.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Downplayed. Kokomi is a gifted strategist and political leader, but she's not without her quirks.
    • Considering her official role is as a priestess and political leader, her knowledge of military strategy can be seen as this in of itself.
    • She bases her motivation to do things on "Energy Points" (reminiscent of spoon theory), and even keeps a diary of incidents and happenings that either increase or decrease her energy based on this point scale, with the Traveler learning that their presence is a great source of increase, much to Kokomi's embarrassment.
  • The Chains of Commanding:
    • Unlike the Raiden Shogun, who at least has the Tri-Commission to assist her, Kokomi is solely in charge of most affairs at Watatsumi; as such, citizens come to her for advice on almost all sorts of problems, which more often than not take their toll on her. Midway through her Story Quest, the Traveler finds her in her secret hideout, exhausted from all the work, explaining to them how she never wanted to be a leader, just an adviser, but for her lineage foisting so much responsibility on her.
    • While she's certainly gifted for it, running the Resistance doesn't lessen her woes. While she's doing a good job all things considered, the Resistance is still vastly disadvantaged against the Shogunate and in turn requires all the help they can get, such as when they're forced to accept help from a mysterious backer despite her reservations, which prove warranted when it's revealed that they're the Fatui, who are not so much invested in their cause as much as interested in using the rebels as test subjects for their mass-produced Delusions. And even after the war ground to a ceasefire, she has to deal with hot-blooded soldiers actively sabotaging peace talks with the Shogunate to continue the war out of lingering resentment.
    • She even feels compelled to keep her personal distaste for fish a secret because of Watatsumi Island's fishing industry, fearing that the knowledge becoming widespread could affect morale.
  • Combat Medic: Both her Elemental Talents are oriented around providing damage and healing in equal measure.
    • Her Skill creates a Bake-Kurage, a phantasmal jellyfish that simultaneously deals Hydro damage on surrounding enemies and heals surrounding allies (not unlike Mona's, sans the taunt) in seven bursts separated by two-second intervals (for a total duration of twelve seconds).
    • Her Burst, similarly to Barbara's Skill, bestows her with the Ceremonial Garment for ten seconds, during which she can heal her allies with her normal and charged attacks, in addition to heightened flinching resistance and boost to the damage potency of both, as well as the Bake-Kurage (based on a fraction of her Max HP). Her fourth-ascension passive, Song of Pearls, further increases the damage potency of normal and charged attacks enhanced with the Garment by 15% of her Healing Bonus stat.
    • Her second Constellation upgrade, The Clouds Like Waves Rippling, increases the healing received by allies with less than half their HP based on a percentage of Kokomi's Max HP—the Bake-Kurage by 4.5%, and normal and charged attacks enhanced with the Ceremonial Garment by 0.6%.
  • Cooldown Manipulation: A variant—Kokomi's first-ascension passive, Tamanooya's Casket, refreshes the duration of the Bake-Kurage whenever she triggers her Burst.
  • Crazy-Prepared: According to Gorou, she's written five volumes of operational directives for her soldiers to use in battle, political matters, and even more mundane instances, including in the event that she disappears without warning.
  • Critical Hit Class: Inverted. Her first utility passive, Flawless Strategy, bestows a 25% boost to her Healing Bonus in exchange for a -100% penalty to her Critical Rate, making it very difficult and impractical for her to land critical hits or be geared for the same.
  • Didn't See That Coming: She admits to being suspicious of her mysterious backer, but the Resistance is backed too far into a corner for her to refuse, so she settles for keeping an eye out for evidence of manipulation or foul play. Unfortunately, her backers turn out to be the Fatui, who have no stake in the result of the war, and only want to draw it out for as long and as fiercely as they can manage. As a result, she's caught flat-footed when they don't sabotage the war effort but rather secretly provide her forces with Delusions, which enables them to make such incredible gains in the short term that nobody stops to ask questions until the side effects start kicking in.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Kokomi doesn't like fish dishes, since the people of Watatsumi claim descent from the underwater civilization of Enkanomiya. However, she doesn't want the islanders to know, since fishing is their main source of income, and it would look bad if their de facto leader isn't fond of it.
  • Dump Stat: Due to her first utility passive's -100% Critical Rate penalty, any Critical-related stats she gains from equipment loadout, team abilities, food effects, or other sources become useless in normal circumstances.
  • Dub Pronunciation Change: Kokomi's family and personal names (hiragana さんごのみや ここみ) are, respectively, the kan-on and kun'yomi, or Han Chinese-derived and native Japanese, readings of 珊瑚宮心海 (except 宮, which uses kun'yomi, while の is added between 瑚 and 宮), which are read as "Shānhúgōng Xīnhǎi" in Chinese, while the Korean dub opts for a localization, also as "Sangonomiya Kokomi" (hangul 산고노미야 코코미; the characters could also be read via hanja as "Sanhogung Simhae"/산호궁 심해).
  • Elemental Personalities: Kokomi has a Hydro Vision, and her calm demeanor rarely falters while being pretty adaptable, par for the course not just for the leader of her people but for a military strategist.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While she appreciates any efforts to strengthen the resistance, she's completely horrified when her soldiers have been using Delusions from the Fatui, revealed to be their anonymous sponsor, to increase their power but also quickly killing them, and immediately bans their usage and requests the Traveler to sabotage the source.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: Among the three youthful-looking ladies (alongside Ayaka and Yoimiya) who help the Traveler in the Inazuma Archon Quest, Kokomi is the Mage, being a Combat Medic (and thus a Support Party Member) that excels in healing rather than in combat.
  • Full-Name Basis: Her playable unit name is referred by her full name of Sangonomiya Kokomi.
  • Good Counterpart: To the Raiden Shogun, at least until the latter's Heel–Face Turn.
    • Appearance-wise, Kokomi is a short, petite young lady with a pastel-blue-and-pink color scheme, whereas the Shogun is a tall, curvy adult woman wearing striking shades of purple. Their fighting styles are also completely different, with Kokomi fighting at a distance with phantasmal fish while the Shogun fights in close quarters with spear and sword. Both have a means of off-field elemental damage through their Skills, and both their Bursts grant them an enhanced state where they regenerate resources for their teammates (HP for Kokomi, Energy for the Shogun).
    • Both lead opposing sides of the Inazuman civil war. Near the climax of the Inazuma Archon Quest, Kokomi also orders the seizure of all Delusions distributed to the Resistance by the Fatui, not unlike the Raiden Shogun's Vision Hunt Decree, albeit for a more justifiable cause that the Delusions have brought more harm than good to her soldiers. Finally, similar to how Kokomi will sometimes hole herself up in her home to unwind, the real Raiden Shogun, Ei, is often ensorcelled in the Plane of Euthymia and away from the real world.
    • Their ways of governing contrast greatly with each other. Kokomi oversees the affairs of Watatsumi (including its military) by herself, and is directly asked to for advice from her people; her Vision story entry also states that she leads by the will of the people instead of her own. But such a method of governing tires her a lot, and she believes that she's not a perfect leader, yet she has to appear as one to her people. By contrast, the Shogun has the Tri-Commision oversee the nation's various affairs; but since Ei refuses to be directly involved in governing and only has the Shogun puppet do the work for her, this means that the Commissions are lacking supervision and thus can potentially do things behind her back, which lay at the root of the current crisis in Inazuma. She also leads by imposing her own ideal of "eternity" onto her nation, heedless of her people's desires and wiles.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite her demure demeanor and role as the Divine Priestess and leader of Watatsumi, Kokomi had more interest in military strategy growing up and dreamed of being a military advisor instead.
  • King of Games: During the "Duel! The Summoners' Summit!" event, Kokomi wins the Inazuma leg of an international Genius Invokation TCG tournament.
  • Miko: What her title and role as the Divine Priestess suggest, though it should be noted that Watatsumi worships a different deity from the rest of Inazuma, and as such doesn't fall under the jurisdiction of the Grand Narukami Shrine.
  • Mirror Character: To Barbara, both being Hydro Vision holders who are aimed at healing in addition to a job involving a church duty (Barbara a deaconess and Kokomi a shrine maiden.)
  • Most Writers Are Writers: The "Secret Summer Paradise" event reveals that Kokomi has written a light novel about Onmyōdō, which was mistaken as nonfiction by Idyia due to how sheltered her life is. Given that Kokomi is a Cute Bookworm who was previously established to be the Pen Pal of the head of Yae Publishing House, it's not surprising that writing would be a hobby of hers.
  • Mythical Motifs:
    • Kokomi is a coral-themed Hydro Vision holder, and an alternate reading of her name, sango-no-miya kokomi or sango-no-miya kokoro-umi, roughly translates to "coral's palace heart-ocean," a reference to the handful of stories from Japanese Mythology that describe water deities as living in palaces made of coral.
    • In addition, the combination of her flowing clothing and the Ceremonial Garment brings to mind the tennyo, divine maidens and messengers of the gods in Japanese Buddhism, whose most notable article of clothing is a hagoromo, a featherweight shawl that seemingly floats above their head and shoulders, befitting a divine priestess such as Kokomi.
  • Navel Window: Kokomi's outfit bares her midriff, with the ribbons of the bow at her chest draping over her front in a way that frames her navel.
  • Necessary Drawback: Her first utility passive imposes a 100% penalty to her Critical Rate, making it effectively impossible for her to land critical hits and cripples her viability as a DPS and synergy with most weapons. However, this is necessary for gameplay balance; as her Talents and typical builds gravitate towards giving her as much Max HP as possible, this gives her among the best healing output in the game, and her Burst makes her attacks hit hard, roughly as strong as other characters with an average Critical Rate/Damage build; had she been allowed to land critical hits, she would have invalidated a huge bulk of the playable cast.
  • Nice Girl: Outside her duties both as rebel leader and priestess, Kokomi is a sweet, friendly young lady who genuinely cares for the people of Watatsumi and who quickly strikes a friendship with the Traveler for being one of the few people who she can reveal her vulnerabilities.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: While Kokomi comes from a place with a Japanese cultural aesthetic, her profile and Constellation are likely nods to Zhuge Liang, Chinese statesman and strategist during the Three Kingdoms period of the third century CE, who was not only nicknamed "Sleeping Dragon," but also romanticized in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms as arguably the greatest strategist of his time, almost singlehandedly responsible for keeping the Shu Han realm of east-central China afloat amidst the conflict, much like how Kokomi kept the Sangonomiya Resistance barely afloat in the face of the vastly superior Shogunate.
  • Odd Friendship: The Irodori Festival event reveals that she and Yae Miko have been exchanging mail for a while under pen names, and once they meet, they get along pretty well because of their shared taste for literature despite Paimon being worried about their differences in political and religious allegiances.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: While not strictly a mermaid in the traditional sense, her attire still evokes the aquatic theme that the people of Watatsumi Island put emphasis on by featuring a lot of fish-fin details befitting for a Hydro Vision holder.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Her hair is a pastel hue of salmon pink tipped with a pale blue gradient.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure:
    • Recognizing the Traveler's combat prowess and skill, she puts them in charge of Swordfish II, one of her army's most well-renowned platoons.
    • Upon discovering the peace talk saboteurs and making the weight of their actions clear, she decides that their punishment is to go through grueling training to become the island's security force, recognizing that while both sides need to be more open, neither can afford to let their guard, especially with still-existing corruption in the Tenryou Commission, with the added benefit of allowing them to let out their pent-up aggression. She then however states in no uncertain terms that she won't let them off next time for any acts of insubordination.
  • Rebel Leader: Kokomi leads the Sangonomiya Resistance, and her subordinates highly revere her for her strategic planning, and some of her adversaries in the Shogunate also respect her.
  • Reduced Mana Cost: Played with. Her second utility passive, Princess of Watatsumi, shaves 20% off of the party's Stamina consumption while swimming.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: While her hair has blue gradients from her pastel pink hair, she is shown to have a kindhearted, gentle, caring, and sweet demeanor towards others matching with her hair color.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: Kokomi applies her Catalyst powers in the form of phantasmal fish "swimming" towards her enemies. Her first Constellation upgrade, At Water's Edge, allows the Ceremonial Garment to add another phantasmal fish at the end of her normal attack combo, with damage worth 30% of her Max HP.
  • Situational Damage Attack: Kokomi's sixth Constellation upgrade, Sango Isshin, gives the Ceremonial Garment the ability to bestow a 40% boost to Hydro Damage Bonus for four seconds whenever her normal or charged attacks heal at least one ally with at least 80% HP.
  • Status Buff: Her fourth Constellation upgrade, The Moon Overlooks the Waters, gives the Ceremonial Garment the ability to increase the speed of her normal attacks by 10%, as well as restore 0.8 Energy whenever her attacks connect.
  • The Strategist: As both leader and strategist of the Resistance, she is renowned for her cunning. Numerous characters mention that it is only thanks to her that the Resistance has been able to stand against the Shogunate forces and even snatch some victories despite being vastly inferior in military strength.
  • Tough Leader Façade: Makes a point of showing no weakness and hiding her tastes and preferences from the world, even though she commonly experiences bouts of self-doubt and finds keeping up the act tiring.
"The people of Watatsumi Island need a perfect leader, not some girl who likes to wile away her time at home."
  • Turn the Other Cheek: While most Watatsumi islanders have always been resentful towards the Shogunate for slaying their patron god Orobashi, Kokomi makes it clear that the current rebellion is against the Vision Hunt Decree, and says that they need to abandon their old grudges.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: It's evident that everyone on Watatsumi highly reveres and respects Her Excellency, Kokomi, for both her kind demeanour, dutiful personality, and military brilliance. This adoration gets tested, however, during her Story Quest, when many of her soldiers are incredulous to her willingness to engage in peace talks with the Shogunate (represented by Kujou Sara), causing them to question her behind her back and spread rumors about the Commission being in league with the Fatui in hopes of sabotaging the talks. Once she caught wind of their plot, however, she calls them out on their belligerence and prioritizing their vendetta against the Shogunate over the wellbeing of people from both sides, causing them to contemplate on their actions and eventually stand down.
  • Upgrade Artifact: A variant—her third and fifth Constellation upgrades, The Moon, A Ship O'er the Seas and All Streams Flow to the Sea, add threee levels to, respectively, her Burst and Skill.
  • Walk on Water: She gains the ability to stand on the surface of water while she wears the Ceremonial Garment.
  • Water Is Womanly: Of the female Hydro Vision holders, Kokomi represents this trope better than most thanks to her iridescent, mermaid-esque design, which makes her very pretty to look at.
  • Weapon Specialization: Kokomi's Wish banner runs concurrent with the Everlasting Moonglow (5★). Its Ascension substat is Max HP (10.8–49.6%), while its "Byakuya Kougetsu" passive increases its wielder's Healing Bonus by 10–20%, as well as the damage potency of their Normal Attacks equivalent to 1–3% of their Max HP, as well as allowing their Normal Attacks to restore 0.6 Energy, triggered at least every 0.1 second, within twelve seconds after triggering their Elemental Burst. Apart from improving her healing potency, this allows Kokomi to quickly charge up Nereid's Ascension and thus give her more opportunities to heal her party while attacking.
  • White Magician Girl: Like Barbara before her, Kokomi is geared toward healing, albeit without sacrificing her offensive potential. Her Elemental Skill summons a Bake-Kurage that heals allies within its radius, while her Burst allows her to heal allies while she attacks.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Not unlike Ayaka, apart from pink hair (instead of the usual black), Kokomi almost entirely fits the standards of a traditional Japanese beauty (again, befitting Inazuma's Japanese cultural aesthetic) — graceful, soft-spoken and, should the need arise, a competent leader.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: In one of her voice-overs, Kokomi reveals that she had no intention of becoming the Divine Priestess and studied to become a military advisor a while back, which explains how she is such an adept commander of the resistance. However, she still became one, and remarks that one "can't defy that which flows in your veins".

Sangonomiya Shrine

The holiest temple in Watatsumi, dedicated to the worship of Orobashi centuries after its passing.

    Shizuru

Shizuru

A Sangonomiya Shrine maiden responsible for reconnaissance missions on the island for any disturbance.

  • Cleanup Crew: A benevolent example. She was assigned by Kokomi to weed out Fatui stragglers in neighboring Yashiori, and has sought out the Traveler to assist her. In addition, she is gathering evidence of such activities as agitating radicals within the Resistance and recruiting corrupt ex-Kanjou samurai, in particular the activities of the saboteur Nathan.
  • Dressing as the Enemy: After she and the Traveler defeat a group of disgruntled ex-Kanjou samurai applying to join the Fatui stragglers, they pose as them and present themselves to the Fatui Navy detachment led by Borenka preparing to retreat.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Amongst the many sins committed by the Fatui in western Inazuma that she has recorded, Shizuru takes particular umbrage at Borenka humiliating one of her fellow shrine maidens.

    Tsuyuko

Tsuyuko

A Sangonomiya Shrine maiden and one of Kokomi's most dependable disciples. She is also the priestess assigned with making preparations for a special rite involving opening the route to Enkanomiya.

  • Deadpan Snarker: She slips in a lot more irreverence than you'd expect out of a devoted shrine maiden, snarking heavily about the trials and ceremonies she has The Traveler go through, their role as a hero, and even some digs at Kokomi herself.
  • Shipper on Deck: She quite obviously thinks Kokomi and The Traveler (whether Aether or Lumine) make a cute couple. At one point she refers to them talking to her together as a date, and giggles when Paimon refers to Kokomi by name instead of her title. Kokomi actually has to threaten to reassign her to Specter watching to force her to shut up.

Sangonomiya Resistance

A rebellion organized by Watatsumi islanders in opposition to the Vision Hunt Decree, reinforced with dissidents from all corners of Inazuma who either lost their Visions or opposed the Shogunate's excesses.

    General Tropes
  • Badass Army: Despite the clear numerical inferiority and the fact that the enemy army is in the service of a Physical God. Thanks to Kokomi's strategies and Gorou's leadership, they were able to win some battles against the Shogunate Army, though by the time of the Traveler's recruitment, they are still in a desperate enough situation to unwittingly allow the Fatui to infiltrate their ranks and take advantage of it.
  • Blood Knight: Swordfish Unit is a division within the Watatsumi Army, and are all very eager for a good fight. Some of the Watatsumi soldiers have shades of this as well. In a deconstruction, this made them unable to let go of their grudges, and are very willing to spread false info just so they can restart the war against the Shogunate's army and avenge their fallen comrades.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Their banner is blue, and they oppose the Vision Hunt Decree that endangers innocents.
  • La Résistance: They banded together when the Vision Hunt Decree is in effect and wanted to end the Shogun's tyranny.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: They are noticeably less disciplined compared to their Shogunate counterparts (and that includes mercenaries within their ranks), moreso the Swordfish Unit, as they have a tendency to argue and get on each other's throats.
  • Resistance as Planned: In the last third of the Inazuma Archon Quest, the Traveler discovers that, as part of the Fatui Playing Both Sides of the civil war, they supplied the Resistance with Delusions, ostensibly to help their efforts, but in reality to make them test subjects. By the time Kokomi discovers it, several of her soldiers have suffered ill effects, with a few, including Teppei, having rapidly aged to death from overuse.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: When Heizou arrived at Watatsumi, the Resistance was put on high alert and kept tabs on him on the suspicion of espionage despite stating that he was on vacation; the fact that he had the audacity to walk around in full Tenryou Commission uniform did not help, either. On one hand, the Resistance's caution was warranted, as Heizou was sent by Kujou Takayuki on a reconnaissance mission; on the other hand, Heizou had so little respect for the Tenryou Commissioner that he simply abandoned it.
  • Visual Pun: Their logo is a stylized letter omega (Ω). Amongst its many uses, omega is used to symbolize ohms, a unit of electrical resistance measurement. They are resisting the Electro Archon.

    Gorou

Gorou

Voiced by: Yang Xinran (Chinese), Tasuku Hatanaka (Japanese), Lee Sae-byeok (Korean), Cory Yee (English)

Canine Warrior
"If there's anything ever troubling you, don't keep it all muzzled up inside. You can always speak your mind with me! Although I can't guarantee that I'll always have an answer, I'll certainly offer you my best advice! Even when I can't muster much of a response, you can always count on me to be a good listener. Whatever it is, I'm all ears."

Rarity: 4★
Element: Geo
Weapon: Bow
Constellation: Canis Bellatoris, the Dog of War

General of the Sangonomiya resistance and Kokomi's right-hand man, known for his fierce loyalty both towards Her Excellency and his men. He's one of the foremost allies the Traveler makes upon their escape to Watatsumi, fighting alongside each other during the assault by the Shogun's Army.

Gorou protects his allies through Elemental Talents that generate areas-of-effect which deal Geo damage as well as provide up to three buffs depending on the number of Geo Vision holders in the party, wherein he can unleash, in increasing levels, either "Standing Firm," "Impregnable," and "Crunch," which respectively add boosts to Defense, interruption resistance, and Geo Damage Bonus. His Skill, Inuzaka All-Round Defense, plants a General's War Banner on a fixed location (around Gorou in its tapped form, anywhere if held), while his Burst, Juuga: Forward Unto Victory, summons a General's Glory around the active character, which additionally deals wide-ranging Crystal Collapse attacks at certain intervals and draws in generated Crystallize shards.note
  • Ambiguously Bi: He's intrigued at the prospect of being together for a lifetime with the Traveler, and is positively excited at the idea of having the Traveler touch, groom and comb his tail, regardless if the Traveler is Lumine or Aether.
  • Ambiguously Human: Gorou's beastly traits are acknowledged in universe, but not given much of an reason for them. It's not clear if Gorou is a human-animal hybrid (like Diona, her father, or Tighnari) or a youkai.
  • Animal Motifs: Dogs. Along with his canine ears and tail, his Constellation means "dog of war," and he has an Undying Loyalty to Kokomi.
  • Area of Effect: Gorou specializes in generating fields that provide up to three different buffs depending on the number of Geo-elemental allies in the party—stationary for ten seconds with General's War Banner, and around the active character for nine seconds with General's Glory.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender:
    • Yae Miko fashioned an alter-ego for him named "Ms. Hina," as he was working anonymously for the Yae Publishing House's periodicals. This gained enough popularity that "she" got a fan club. Miko took it a step further and created a character design for "Ms. Hina" based on Gorou's appearance (though with large breasts and an Impossibly-Low Neckline) and placed a standee of "her" in front of the Publishing House on the same day Gorou was supposed to visit for the current issue of his column. The Traveler had to keep him away from seeing it, despite the crowd noting how similar Gorou and "Ms. Hina" looked.
    • Miko does it again at the end of the final "Legend of the Kasen" Festival Deeds quest; she tells Gorou from a letter that next month he will cosplay a character from a popular light novel and attend a fan meeting later on. Miko also had an outfit sewn specifically for him... and it's a female outfit, much to his annoyance. The character he is going to portray is implied to be Guuji from Pretty Please, Kitsune Guuji.
  • Badass Adorable: Gorou is an experienced general, a skilled archer, and is a highly-respected figure in the Resistance. He also has a major sweet tooth, genuinely believes that I Have This Friend is a convincing excuse, and tends to sleep in the fetal position while hugging his tail.
  • Blood Knight: According to Kokomi, his one flaw is that he tends to get heated in the middle of battle.
  • Breaking Old Trends: Prior to 4.6, none of the 4★ characters given for free during a patch's Flagship Event hail from Inazuma (likely because access to Inazuma and its materials is gated behind Archon Quests); Gorou would put an end to this, becoming the first free Inazuman 4★ character, obtained in the 4.6 Flagship Event, "Iridescent Arataki Rockin' For Life Tour de Force of Awesomeness".
  • Chaste Hero: Incredible at counseling those dealing with any number of social situations, but not romance, as admitted by both himself and the fans of his advice column.
  • Cooldown Manipulation: His first Constellation upgrade, Rushing Hour: Swift as the Wind, shaves two seconds off the ten-second cooldown time of his Skill (with at least ten-second intervals) whenever allies deal Geo-elemental damage within the radii of either of his "General" fields; and in a variant, his second, Sitting Hound: Steady as a Clock, adds a second to the duration of General's Glory whenever an ally inside the field picks up a Crystallize shard (within 0.1-second intervals and to a maximum of three seconds).
  • Crippling Overspecialization: As a support-oriented unit, Gorou only truly shines if you have at least three other Geo Vision holders (particularly ones whose offensive power scales off of Defense like Albedo, Itto, or a fully-upgraded Noelle). Otherwise there's very little that he can provide to a team.
  • Damage Over Time: General's Glory periodically deals Geo-elemental attacks on enemies around the active character every 1.5 seconds.
  • Dowsing Device: His utility passive, Seeker of Shinies, displays location of Inazuma-exclusive resources on the minimap.
  • Dub Name Change: Unusually, his name is rendered in katakana (ゴロー, Hepburn Gorō), given that the Han characters used in his name (五郎, Chinese Wǔláng) can also be read in Japanese as Gorō (via the go-on, or Wu Chinese-derived, method). The Korean dub also follows suit with "Goro" (hangul 고로), while the Han characters can be read as "Orang" (오랑).
  • Epic Fail: In one route of his Hangout Event tree, he accuses Yae Miko of hugging her tail in her sleep and daydreaming of someone grooming her tail, just like himself. Not only this means he just bared his entire hand to her, it fails because she doesn't have a tail. He and the Traveler can only slink back, dejected and defeated.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: Although he's usually a friendly guy who does his best to support both his men and the readers of That's Life, the war has left him with a very low opinion of the Shogunate. Even after the war ground to a ceasefire, he makes it clear that he won't easily forgive the Raiden Shogun for her actions regardless of her reasons.
  • Expressive Ears: His ears perk up and droop down depending on mood. Yae Miko can read him like a book based on his ears and tail.
  • A Father to His Men:
    • Passionately declares that he will never abandon the Resistance's own, and backs this up when Sara offers a temporary truce in exchange for taking the Traveler into custody. In spite of not knowing that Kokomi was gathering reinforcements, he stands his ground and refuses to let the Shogun have them.
    • Kokomi's Story Quest has him state that his men have always been willing to share their troubles with him before, making the secretiveness of some soldiers during the Quest all the more suspicious. This is because they're conspiring to disrupt the peace talks and continue the war, knowing he'd oppose this out of deference to Kokomi, who is otherwise eager for it to go through.
  • Furry Reminder: Gorou still has some dog traits, like shaking his tail when he gets excited, lower his ears whenever he feels down, and his allergies to onions, which are one of the many ingredients dogs can't eat.
  • Frontline General: Unlike Kokomi, Gorou works on the frontlines and fights alongside the Resistance.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Gorou has an Undying Loyalty towards Kokomi, and is noted to be a good friend of Kazuha's. However, being a Geo character who's at his best when in a team with at least two other Geo characters, he has remarkably low synergy with the both of them.
    • It's not quite as extreme with Kokomi, who can at least do double duty as a hybrid Healer/DPS unit, but aside from that, there's likely not much else she can help with. Another potential use for her is making it easier to trigger a Hydro Crystalization, though it's likely that Gorou can trigger that anyways when fighting Hydro-aspected enemies, either way.
    • With Kazuha, both men hold Visions belong to the game's "neutral" elements, respectively Anemo and Geo, which deal extra hits and generate damage-absorbent shields when coming into contact with Cryo, Pyro, Hydro, or Electro. As of v3.3, they do not have an associated reaction with each other, hence hampering any team with both men without anyone from the other elements. And since an optimal Gorou team will likely lack room for any Pyro, Cryo, Hydro, or Electro Vision holders were the player to include Kazuha, the most help the Rōnin will be is to use Chihayaburu to gather up enemies in one place.
  • Guyliner: Wears red eyeliner on the sides of his eyes.
  • Heroic Dog: Has beastly traits in his canine ears and tail, is a kind person, and forms part of the Resistance, a group presented as heroic in contrast to the antagonistic Shogun's Army.
  • Little Bit Beastly: As mentioned before, canine ears and a fluffy tail.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: Gorou is unique in that the properties of his abilities directly change depending on the composition of the party, gaining more effects the more Geo characters there are.
  • Meaningful Name
    • ゴ (go) is homophonous with the go-on, or Wu Chinese-derived, reading of 護 (simplified 护, pinyin ), which can also be read in kun'yomi, or native Japanese, reading as "mamo" in mamoru. In both languages, the character means "protection," befitting Gorou's role in protecting Watatsumi.
    • The name "Gorou" is also an antique Japanese name that literally means "fifth son," alluding to this Gorou's birth order in his family, albeit traditionally rendered in kanji as 五郎, as it is in the Chinese localization, instead of the katakana used for his name (ゴロー).
  • Mr. Fanservice: His clothing is quite revealing and shows off most of his torso. Additionally, the two windows at his waist expose his bare hips and show that he doesn't wear conventional underwear.
  • Muscle Angst: His character story reveals that he's actually quite insecure about his height and slim build, especially in comparison to larger men under his command. He secretly wishes he was taller and more muscular, feeling it would be more suited to his rank as a general.
  • My Instincts Are Showing: A few times during his Hangout Event, Gorou's tail swishes side to side when he's happy or excited. And one of his idle animations has him try to remain stoic, only to get distracted by a passing butterfly, attempting to reach out to it before catching himself.
  • Not the Intended Use: Gorou has the fastest charged attack animation, which means he is the best archer to abuse rapid-aim cancel to fire arrows much faster than the standard normal attack combos.
  • Number Two: He is the second-in-command of Kokomi, and is in charge of training and directing troops during battle, following Kokomi's directions to the letter.
  • Odd Friendship: He immediately makes good friends with Itto at the "Akitsu Kimodameshi" event, with Gorou being calm and polite, and Itto extroverted and impulsive. While they both discuss their shared love for fishing, their methods are very different: Gorou likes fishing by hand, while Itto finds it more fun using a fishing rod. Also Itto can't tell Gorou is "Ms. Hina" (Gorou doesn't even know about the stunt) despite all the contrived coincidences. In Itto's words about Gorou, he can sense a familiar feeling from Gorou just talking to him.
  • Odd Name Out: Unlike the other important Inazuman characters (except for Mondstadt-born Thoma), Gorou's name in Japanese subtitles is spelled with katakana (ゴロー), despite having equivalent kanji characters (五郎).
  • Onion Tears: His least favorite food is onions. He mentions in his voice-overs an incident where ground onions in his food reduced him to tears at the mess table.
  • Plague of Good Fortune: When he visits the Irodori Festival, he ends up winning several giveaways while buying books for Kokomi... all of which terrify him because the prizes either remind him of or threaten to put him in contact with Yae Miko. First he wins a toy fox, then a book reviewed by Miko, then wins a full collection of light novels to be awarded by Miko herself. Thankfully he is spared from that last one (but not before Miko uses the chance to rope him into more crossdressing).
  • Power-Up Magnet: His General's Glory field has the ability to draw in elemental shards towards the active character.
  • Regenerating Health: His fourth Constellation upgrade, Lapping Hound: Warm as Water, grants an "Impregnable"- or "Crunch"-grade General's Glory field the ability to periodically heal allies within its radius every 1.5 seconds based on half of Gorou's Defense stat.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The final "Legend of the Kasen" Festival Deeds quest has him intending to accompany Kokomi when she came to met a pen pal of hers. However, once that pen pal ended up being Yae Miko, he ran away from her as fast as he could.
  • Sliding Scale of Gameplay and Story Integration: Itto has good synergy with Gorou; Itto's banners have always featured Gorou, who has only been a featured 4★ on an Itto banner as of v4.2. They make good friends once they meet during the "Akitsu Kimodameshi" event, and in Itto's lines about Gorou, he can feel a familiar vibe, as if Gorou can understand his most inner feelings, not knowing that his favorite advice columnist, Ms. Hina, is actually Gorou. Since Itto's buff scales with his Defense, Gorou's Elemental Talents further improve his defensive capabilities.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Gorou can understand and interpret complete sentences from Shiba Inus (or dogs in general) which he demonstrates in one route of his Hangout Event tree where he easily held a conversation with Taroumaru regarding Treasure Hoarders that raided the Komore Teahouse. According to Gorou, Taroumaru was speaking in a kind of dialect from his perspective, most of which goes beyond his head but he understands the general idea. This should be taken with a grain of salt, because as pointed out by the Traveler, his understanding went well beyond the general idea and into a specific description of the scene, complete with names. In fact, he somehow got all that from a single woof.
  • Status Buff:
    • Both of Gorou's "General" fields generate up to three buffs depending on the number of additional Geo Vision holders in the party. If Gorou is the only Geo unit, the field is in "Standing Firm" grade, which adds a boost to Defense; if two, "Impregnable," which adds to flinching resistance; and if three, "Crunch," which adds a 15% boost to Geo Damage Bonus.
    • His first-ascension passive, Heedless of the Wind and Weather, allows his Burst to boost the party's Defense by 25% for twelve seconds.
    • His fourth-ascension passive, A Favor Repaid, adds a damage boost to both his Elemental Talents based his Defense stat—156% for his Skill, 15.6% for his Burst.
    • His sixth Constellation upgrade, Valiant Hound: Mountainous Fealty, adds to both "General" fields a boost to the Critical Damage of Geo-aligned attacks used within—in increasing order, 10% for Standing Firm, 20% for Impregnable, and 40% for Crunch.
  • Support Party Member: Gorou's kit revolves around powering up Geo-oriented teams, with both his Elemental Talents dealing wide-ranging damage and generating fields that provide diverse buffs depending on the number of Geo allies in the team, with General's Glory having the additional ability to draw elemental shards towards the active character and deal damage at regular intervals.
  • Sweet Tooth: He loves sweets, with his top favorites being cake and dango, because he rarely gets to enjoy them at war.
  • Taking You with Me: Attempts to embarrass Yae Miko by revealing his entire hand, banking on his own Psychological Projection. It failed spectacularly. Unbeknownst to him at the time, Miko actually does have a tail. Five of them.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Kokomi, being steadfast about ensuring the future of Watatsumi Island in her name. Quite fitting for a character who shows dog traits.
  • Upgrade Artifact: A variant—his third and fifth Constellation upgrades, Mauling Hound: Fierce as Fire and Striking Hound: Thunderous Force, add three levels to, respectively, his Skill and Burst.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: His outfit makes him this.
  • Virtual Celebrity: The effect of him being an anonymous correspondent for the Yae Publishing House is this. Yae Miko fashioned a female alter-ego for him named "Ms. Hina," and this became a full-blown example of this trope after Miko went all the way and designed an image of "Ms. Hina" to put an actual face behind his now-popular advice column, based on Gorou's features. This effectively makes him a sort of prototype VTuber in a fantasy setting.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Yae Miko just won't stop making his life a mess, will she!
    • "Ms. Hina" is a very Attractive Bent-Gender version of himself, a character made by the Yae Publishing House to the Guuji's amusement.
    • When Kokomi and Miko meet each other during the festival, Gorou makes a stealthy but quick retreat. Thanks to her, Gorou becomes terrified at even a plush of a fox. His luck gets even worse during the Irodori festival where he keeps winning items from Yae Publishing House, and even wins the grand prize of receiving a handshake and photo of himself next to Miko herself. Paimon lampshades this, wondering if Gorou was both lucky and unlucky.
    • At the end of the Inazuma segment of Summoner's Summit event in 3.7 we see him hide behind a sign to avoid being seen by the Guuji, although by Miko's facial expression it would seem she knows what he was doing.
  • Worthy Opponent: Kujou Sara has gained his begrudging respect, deeming her honorable compared to the rest of the Shogun's Army, and the feeling is genuinely mutual. Gorou wonders what would be if she wasn't blindly obedient to the Shogun, while Sara laments the fact they're on opposite sides of the civil war.

    Enjou
A researcher from Watatsumi tasked with helping the Traveler purify Enkanomiya. See the Abyss Order folder for more information.

    Kouzen

Kouzen

A resistance member involved in a plot to hinder the peace talks and continue the war.

  • Accidental Truth: In an attempt to delay or sabotage the peace talks he spread a false rumour of the Tenyou Commission colluding with the Fatui. However, the rumour turns out to be true. The Kujou soldiers attempt to assasinate Kokomi during peace talks and turned a blind eye to a Fatui plot to mass bomb Watatsumi Island, which forces Kujou Sara to delay taking command of Watatsumi Island's forces.
  • Blood Knight: He, along with other like-minded soldiers, are too used to all the fighting to accept peace and go back to normal lives, which prompts them to spread unsavoury rumours about the Tenryou Commission to hinder the peace talks and keep the war going. When you first meet him, he's quick to challenge you to a fight to see your worth for himself, and possibly gauge if they're like him and the other soldiers.
  • The Complainer Is Always Wrong: ZigZagged. While he has every right to be upset about his comrades dying over the Ei’s indifference to governance and her puppet being manipulated by the Fatui, as well as there being no guarantee that Sangonomiya will be allowed to maintain any level of independence, his plan to sabotage the peace talks would have made things worse for Watatsumi Island. Watatsumi Island in no position to continue fighting due to supply issues. Then zigzagged again, as the Kujou soldiers attempted to assassinate Kokomi and were colluding with the Fatui out of stupidity and Kujou Sara is unable to take command of Watatsumi's troops as a result.
  • Didn't Think This Through: He wants to sabotage the peace talks because of his unwillingness to let go of his petty grudge against the Shogunate for the death of his comrades in the Civil War. Once his plan fails, Kokomi points out that his plan would have put the families and loved ones of the Sangonomiya in danger if the war had dragged on, as well as the fact that since many soldiers were either dying or still recovering from using Delusions that Watasumi Island was in no position to continue fighting.
  • Easily Forgiven: Downplayed. While they're called out on their actions and the possible ramifications they could have had, Kokomi's "punishment" for them is essentially just putting them in charge of the islands security, with the worst repercussion from this being the gruelling training. However, she also states that there will be harsh consequences if they try such a thing again.
  • False Flag Operation: He tries to sabotage the peace talks, by accusing the Tenryou Commission of colluding with the Fatui. Subverted, as the Kujou forces really were working with the Fatui by turning a blind eye to a plot to mass bomb Watatsumi Island.
  • Hypocrite: Under the paranoid belief that the Tenryou Commission will backstab them, he and his co-conspirators intend to backstab them first during the Peace Talks, and betray Kokomi's trust in the process.
  • No Sympathy For Grudge Holders: Part of his and his companion's motivations is that they still hold a grudge against the Shogunate and would prefer to simply conqueror them instead of settle for peace. As Kokomi states after the plot is prevented, their ultimately putting their desire for fighting and vengeance above the well-being of everyone else involved.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: His role in the pro-war faction is because he claims that there's nothing stopping the Tenryou Commission from backstabbing them or the Raiden Shogun from declaring a new Vision Hunt Decree, meaning the only solution is to achieve complete victory over them. As Paimon points out however, he and his pals are just too used to the war to accept peace, and he practically admits after that it's because he's incapable of letting go of his grudge against them for the casualties incurred during the war.
  • Revenge Myopia: One reason he and his cohorts conspire to keep the war going is due to an inability to forgive the Shogunate for the deaths of their comrades incurred during it. While the Shogunate is the main instigator due to imposing the Vision Hunt Decree in the first place, this ignores how Watatsumi chose to rebel and fight back against the Shogunate in an armed conflict would clearly lead to casualties, and that the soldiers they're fighting are just rank-and-file soldiers with families back home, just like them.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Even if their plot to continue the war worked, Kokomi points out during her dressing down of them that with the disadvantages they were at coupled by the losses incurred due to the Delusions meant that they wouldn't be able to stand as much of a chance as they did before and Watatsumi would likely just end up getting wiped out. Plus, while it goes unstated, there's the fact that it would eventually pit them against a Physical God who killed a Fatui Harbinger and centuries old demi-god with ease, which wouldn't bode well even if they did stand more of a chance against the Shogunate forces.

    Masashi and Tokuda

Masashi and Tokuda

Two Watatsumi soldiers who are often seen together.

  • Blood Knight: Masashi has shades of this. He is eager to get back to the battlefield much to Tokuda's chagrin who reminds him that he has the recover first.
  • The Bus Came Back: After not appearing in the debut quest they appear in, they finally make a return in Heizou's Hangout Event acting as Todoroki's escorts.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Masashi is the red, who is eager to fight and spar. While Tokuda is the sensible blue who often reminds him not to get reckless.
  • Those Two Guys: Are often seen together in a quest that involves them.

    Shouji

Shouji

A Watatsumi archer who seems to be bad with a bow.

  • A-Team Firing: During his first appearance, he has missed every shot with a bow, to the point that he requires a bow user to even teach him the basics.
  • New Meat: Hinted, given he isn't particularly adept with a bow (and he only managed to hit 1 target). In a commission "Archery Demonstration" he wanted another demonstration in the hopes of becoming a better marksman.

    Teppei

Teppei

Voiced by: Yūichi Iguchi (Japanese), Christian La Monte (English)

A soldier of the resistance who, due to being unable to fully complete his training due to the need for troops, was assigned to the logistics division. He's among the first of the them that The Traveler meets.

  • Cast from Lifespan: Teppei's Fatui Delusion eats into his life the more he taps into its power.
  • Distressed Dude: The Traveler first encounters him being bullied by two Shogunate samurai, rescuing him by fighting them off.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend:
    • Averted. His death utterly enrages the Traveler and drives their actions for the remainder of Act III, such as their decision to duel La Signora before the Shogun’s throne.
    • Zig-Zagged in Kokomi's Character Quest. He's not mentioned during the quest, but when the player finds Kokomi's journal while searching the cave for a book she was reading, they'll find that under the entry about the Traveler's return, she stated that it would probably be best to not bring Teppei up in fear of bringing down the mood.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Teppei has high aspirations and desires to be more than just a logistics guy to make a greater contribution to the resistance.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: As Act 3 goes on, he starts suffering coughing fits due to his Delusion-induced Rapid Aging.
  • Miles Gloriosus: Tries to come off as more badass than he actually is in all of his accounts and stories. This likely contributed him into accepting a Delusion without question which backfired on him.
  • Mr. Exposition: Serves as the Traveler's guide regarding the matters of the Sangonomiya Resistance and their deity, Orobashi.
  • Rapid Aging: Due to using a Delusion provided by the Resistance's backers, the Fatui, he suffers rapid aging and effectively dies of old age.
  • Stuffed into the Fridge: Killed off specifically to infuriate the Traveler into more immediate action.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: While Teppei had a small role in the story, him being saved by the traveler led him to the resistance as well as becoming their friend. After he dies, the Traveler becomes so enraged that they get caught in a trap by Scaramouche and Yae Miko is forced to trade the electro Gnosis to spare their life and inadvertently leads them to join forces which eventually leads to the repeal of the Vision Hunt Decree.
  • The Smart Guy: Teppei is knowledgeable in several fields from medicine to strategy. Too bad he wants to be useful on the front lines of the war. This caused him to accept a Delusion without knowing its side effects until it's too late.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Next time The Traveler and Paimon meet him after their first mission as Captain of Swordfish II, he's made great contributions in dealing with the Shogunate Navy and is being made Captain of his own squadron as a result. As it turns out, this is because he was given a Delusion.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Ends up trusting shadowy figures, the Fatui, and uses a secret weapon resembling a Vision given to him, not questioning its origins or the potential negative side-effects. Scaramouche and La Signora, in very Kick the Dog fashions, frequently Lampshade this, albeit when referring to everyone in the Resistance who took their Delusions.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about him without mentioning his untimely death, and how it ignites an even deeper grudge against the Fatui in The Traveler.

Enkanomiya

The ancestral land of the ancestors of the Watatsumi islanders who took Orabashi as their god.

Historical

    Abrax

Abrax, or Aberaku no Mikoto

The engineer who built the Helios, or Dainichi Mikoshi, the artificial sun that lights up Enkanomiya.

    The Sunchildren

Orupeusu, Piramumon, Surepio, Ion, Risutaiosu, Isumenasu and Rikoru no Mikoto

Also known as the Phaethons. The Sunchildren were seven children selected by the corrupt nobles to be the official rulers of Byakuyakoku. They claimed that the Sunchildren were born directly from the Dainichi Mikoshi.

  • Awful Truth: Ion could tell fortunes, but when he predicted tragedy, he would tell the opposite so that people would be happy.
  • Broken Pedestal: Abrax was Rikoru's idol, however, he was manipulated by the nobles to believe that Abrax wanted to kill the Sunchild to take power for himself. This caused Rikoru to imprison Abrax and claim that he would build a tower taller than the Dainichi Mikoshi.
  • Deadly Euphemism: When they reached a certain age, the Sunchildren would all go through the Rite of Solar Return, which was in reality execution: the Sunchild would be incinerated by the Dainichi Mikoshi. The nobles knew that if a Sunchild grew old enough, he could no longer be manipulated.
  • Puppet King: The Sunchildren were manipulated by the nobles to do their bidding and had no real power, being ignorant children.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming:
    • The Sunchildren are each named after a son of Apollo, the Greek god of the sun. Most of their namesakes have a connection with the temple of Delphi:
      • Ion: Ion, who was raised by a priestess of the Delphic Oracle.
      • Isumenasu: Ismenus, brother of the seer Tenerus, and an alternate eponym of River Ismenus, which is said to have previously been known as Ladon.
      • Orupesu: Orpheus, legendary poet, musician and prophet.
      • Piramumon: Philammon, composer of the hymns to Artemis and Apollo that were sung at Delphi.
      • Rikoru: Lycorus. The city Lycoreia was named in his honor, and it was later renamed Delphi in honor of his great-grandson Delphus.
      • Risutaiosu: Aristaeus, who travelled to Ceos because of a Delphic prophecy.
      • Surepio: Asclepius, who was born in the Temple of Apollo at Delphi.
    • Phaethon was the son of Helios, the Greek personification of the sun. He is most known for his disastrous failure to drive his father's sun chariot. This mirrors how the Sunchildren failed to govern Byakuyakoku, which resulted in a corrupt reign that drew the hatred of the people of Enkanomiya.
  • Royal Brat: All of them ruled over Enkanomiya tyrannically, although they were manipulated into doing so and could never truly have learned better.
