    Keyla 

Keyla

Played By: Gabi Medvedovski

One of the five main characters, Keyla became a mom as a teenager, which came with a lot of challenges.


  • Betty and Veronica: Keyla's the Archie to Tato's dependable Betty and Deco's exciting Veronica.
  • Calling Parents by Their Name: She usually calls her father by his name.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Keyla and Tato have been best friends for years before the story begins, and he's always been in love with her.
  • Daddy's Girl: Keyla lost her mother when she was a kid, and has an extremely close relationship with Roney.
  • Former Friend of Alpha Bitch: Was best friends with the 'Ks' before getting pregnant.
  • Good Parents: Despite having a lot of trouble doing so (especially in regards to money), Keyla does her best with Tonico and has a great relationship with him.
  • In Love with Love: Keyla has a very idealized notion of romantic love, being more interested in romantic gestures and ideas than in her actual feelings.
  • Last-Minute Hookup: Keyla and Tato only actually get together in their final scene.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: She's really similar to her father Roney.

  • We Used to Be Friends: Keyla used to be part of a trio with the K's. Until she found out she was pregnant, that is, because then they turned against her.

One of the five main characters, Tina has a very different idea for her future than what her mom wants.


  • Addled Addict: Tina has a issue with drugs that often affects her relationship with the people around her.
  • Best Friends-in-Law: Tina and Ellen, while Tina and Anderson are together.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: A few times, but the biggest one is when Mitsuko leaves Anderson so out of it he ends up in an accident. Tina becomes furious when she finds out what actually happened.
  • The Confidant: For a bit, she's the only one Lica is open to about her developing relationship with Samantha.
  • Cool Big Sis: They have complicated moments, but she's usually this to her younger sister.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Tina's relationship with Anderson is extremely disapproved by her mother due to his race and social status.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: Tina can play the cello.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Tina's first scene involves an argument with her mother about their different views of her future.
  • Follow in My Footsteps: Mitsuko refuses to accept any future for Tina where she doesn't become a doctor.
  • High-School Sweethearts: Tina and Anderson in the beginning of As Five. It doesn't last long.
  • Love at First Sight: Tina and Anderson become extremely interested in each other right from their first meeting.

  • Toilet Seat Divorce: After clearly being in a rough patch of their relationship for a long time, what ends up breaking Tina and Anderson for real is the death of a fish he bought.
  • Unable to Cry: Tina spends the first season not knowing how to cope with everything happening in her life, not managing to even cry about her mother's death.
  • Uptown Girl: That's one of the main reasons Mitsuko opposes Tina and Anderson's romance.

    Lica

One of the five main characters, Lica's perfect life crumbles when her parents divorce and she finds out the complicated family secrets.



    Ellen 

Ellen

Played By: Heslaine Vieira

One of the five main characters, Ellen is an extremely smart teenager with way above the average computer skills.


  • Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder: It's by going back to Brazil and getting involved with Lito that Ellen realizes she doesn't want to marry Omar.
  • Amicable Exes: Remains having a very positive relationship with Fio after they break up.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Ellen and Jota argue all the time. They're also extremely interested in one another.
  • Best Friends-in-Law: Tina and Ellen, while Tina and Anderson are together.
  • Betty and Veronica:
    • In Viva a Diferença, she's the Archie to Fio's popular and charming Veronica and Jota's nerdy Betty.
    • In the first season of As Five, she's the Archie to Omar's stable Betty and Lito's adventurous Veronica.
  • Bi-Wildered: Ellen has a difficult time with herself after realizing she's attracted to Maura.
  • Book Smart: Ellen is the most intelligent character in the series, being amazing at every subject in school. She manages to go extremely well in a test done with the purpose of making her fail.
  • Daddy's Girl: Most of what she knows she learned, or at least started learning, from her father. His death hit Ellen hard.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Had a much easier relationship with her father.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father was killed when she was a kid, which is a huge part of the reason Ellen starts out so closed off.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Has this relationship with Anderson, though she can do extremely foolish things to help him.
  • Friends Turned Romantic Rivals: In the second season, Ellen and Lica both become interested in Maura.
  • Go-Getter Girl: She does amazing in school and is involved in basically everything.
  • Married to the Job: She's extremely focused, which also means she can forget to pay attention to who she's actually dating.
  • No Sparks: The resolution to the second season's love triangle comes from there being no sparks between them when Ellen and Maura kiss.
  • Office Romance: She's briefly interested in coworker Maura.
  • Offscreen Breakup: Jota's not in As Five, meaning he and Ellen broke up at some point.
  • Pair the Smart Ones: Ellen and Jota are the two smartest of the soap opera, academically.
  • Private Tutor: Starts tutoring the other students in school for money while Anderson can't work.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Downplayed in that her mother is around, but because she's almost always busy with work, Ellen's day to day raising was done by her grandmother.
  • Rivalry as Courtship: Ellen and Jota start out as rivals - in basically anything they can think of.
  • Scholarship Student: Ends up getting a scholarship to Colégio Grupo.
  • School Grade Hacking: Gets into trouble pre-canon for doing this to try to change Anderson's grade.
  • Shipping Torpedo: Initially is against Tina and Anderson's relationship because she doesn't think it could work.
  • Smart People Build Robots: Wins a competition for one she builds with Jota and Juca.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: She's the most intelligent of the cast, and one of the few to wear glasses.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Lica and Ellen fight a lot, which doesn't mean they aren't best friends.

    Benê

One of the five main characters, Benê is an autistic teenager with poor social skills. Meeting the girls results in her first ever friend group, and she works hard to keep them together.


  • All of the Other Reindeer: She's seen as "different" from everyone else and suffers a lot because of it.
  • Amicable Exes: Gets along really well with Guto.
  • Animal Lover: She's an expert on birds especifically, but reads up a lot in the animal kingdom as a whole and often talks about that information.
  • Bad Mood Retreat: Goes under her bed when she's overwhelmed.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: Benê's extremely cute and wears glasses.
  • The Bet: Benê wins a bet against Guto that requires him to give her piano lessons.
  • Bully Magnet: There are very few characters high enough in the schools' food chain that don't give her grief at least once.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father abandoned her when she was young.
  • Duet Bonding: After Benê starts getting piano lessons from Guto, playing together is the main way their relationship advances.
  • First Kiss: Benê's first kiss is with Guto.
  • Friendless Background: Her friendship with the girls is actually her first friendship ever.
  • Girls Like Musicians: Guto's piano skills is one of the things Benê finds more interesting about him.
  • High-School Sweethearts: With Guto in the first episode of As Five. They break up by the end of the pilot.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Benê and Guto break up after he finds out he's gay.

  • Mourning an Object: Benê takes it extremely hard when her piano ends up being destroyed internally by termite.
  • No Social Skills: She's not very good at dealing with other people, especially early on.
  • Oblivious to Love: Benê never really finds out that Juca had a thing for her.
  • Opposites Attract: She's extremely organized and likes everything to be predictable. Nem, on the other hand, is immature and impulsive. Naturally they fall in love.

  • Roommate Drama: Lica and Benê take a little while to actually learn how to live with each other in a way that works for both of them.
  • Sexless Marriage: Guto and Benê spent years living together in a relationship, but didn't have sex with each other. Guto initially believed he simply didn't like sex, but it was actually because he's gay.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: Falls for her piano teacher Guto.
  • The Un-Favorite: Her father prefers her brother over her (because he doesn't like having an autistic daughter).

Best friends with Guto and the lead singer of the school band, she often gets into conflicts with the girls. At least until she falls for Lica.


  • Actor Allusion: Samantha going to Mexico was a reference to her actress having done a Mexican TV series.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Lica often calls her Sammy.
  • Ascended Extra: Samantha went from having a couple lines in most episodes to being one of the most iconic characters in the franchise.
  • Birds of a Feather: Lica and Samantha's similarities are pointed out a lot.
  • Closet Geek: Though she's not purposefully hiding it, people are always surprised that she's into sci-fi.
  • Closet Key: Lica and Samantha serve as this for each other.
  • Female Rockers Play Bass: She's the bassist for the Lagostins.
  • Ladykiller in Love: A female example. After going out with half the male cast, she experiences truly being in love with someone for the first time with Lica, becoming weirdly insecure about whether her feelings are returned.
  • The Muse: Serves as this for Lica.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: Samantha and Guto are extremely close without even a hint of romantic feelings between them.
  • Previously Overlooked Paramour: Serves as this for Lica, having been classmates with her since they were kids.
  • Put on a Bus: Samantha is established as going away to spend a while in Mexico for work in the beginning of the second season.
  • Really Gets Around: Has a reputation (and not an incorrect one) of being this.
  • Rejected Marriage Proposal: Though we never actually see that, it can be inferred she said no when Lica proposed.
  • Same Character, But Different: Out of everyone who shows up in the spinoff, Samantha is the one who is the least like her teenage version, for seemingly no reason.
  • Sex with the Ex: With Lica, whenever the opportunity arises.
  • Third-Option Love Interest: After Lica spends quite a bit of Malhação in a love triangle with MB and Felipe, the one who actually wins her heart is Samantha.

One of Tina's best friends, Jota develops a rivalry with (and crush on) Ellen from the very beginning.



    MB 

MB

Played By: Vinícius Wester

Lica's boyfriend in the beginning of the story, MB is a troubled teenager with complicated family issues.


  • The Alcoholic: MB's usually drinking and the characters around him often comment on it. It gets worse once he begins to realize his father may get him in trouble with the law.
  • Friends Turned Romantic Rivals: When Lica first starts going after Felipe she's still dating MB, despite the two being best friends.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Though they start out dating, MB eventually ends up with this kind of relationship with Lica.
  • The Nicknamer: MB constantly creates nicknames for people, usually (but not always) by making an unusual diminutive of their name.
  • Only Known by Initials: His name is actually Michel Borovski.

    Guto

After losing a bet, Guto becomes tasked with teaching Benê to play the piano - her interest in him is obvious from the beginning, though his side of things is more complicated.


  • Amicable Exes: Gets along really well with Benê.
  • The Bet: Benê wins a bet against Guto that requires him to give her piano lessons.
  • Coming Out to Spouse: Guto admits to Benê that he's gay after being in a relationship with her for years.
  • Duet Bonding: After Benê starts getting piano lessons from Guto, playing together is the main way their relationship advances.

Lica's best friend from childhood, their relationship wavers when Lica's father starts dating her mother and they find out Edgar is her biological father.


  • Blame the Paramour: Clara blames Lica instead of Felipe when he cheats on her.
  • Not Actually His Child: Despite being raised by Luís, her biological father is actually Edgar. Clara never stops having a better relationship with Luís, however.
  • The Not-Love Interest: Lica's most complex relationship in the first part of the soap opera is actually with Clara, with most of the heavy moments being about her and not either of her love interests at the time.
  • Pair the Spares: Juca and Clara are heavily implied to end up together - Juca was interested in Benê, Clara dated Guto.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Develops this with Lica early on, and they take quite a while to start getting along well again.
  • Sibling Triangle: After getting upset with her, Lica starts to develop interest for Clara's boyfriend Felipe.
  • Uptown Girl: The reason her fling with Fio doesn't work is that he's not willing to put up with the problems that this creates.

  • Friends Turned Romantic Rivals: When Lica first starts going after Felipe she's still dating MB, despite the two being best friends.

    Gabriel

The son Roney didn't know he had, Gabriel has a lot of trouble in school over his sexuality.


  • Unknown Relative: Shows up in the story to finally meet his father that never knew about him.

Counselor at Colégio Grupo, he's adored by the students.

Keyla's childhood friend and in love with her for just as long, Tato offers to be a father to her son when she can't find the guy who got her pregnant.


  • Birthday Episode: His birthday falls right on the day of ENEM, with the teenagers relaxing after the exams in his party.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Keyla and Tato have been best friends for years before the story begins, and he's always been in love with her.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Early on, his insecurity over Keyla's feelings for him often meant he'd get very intense when other guys approached her or she mentioned Deco.
  • Disposable Love Interest: Not even mentioned in As Five.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Waited for years until Keyla was willing to see him as more than her best friend.
  • Forced from Their Home: Gets basically kicked out by his father when he assumes Tonico.
  • Give the Baby a Father: Tato assumes Tonico, despite not actually being his father. It's mostly because he's in love with Keyla, though he also has a very deep want for a family unit that he thinks he'll get by doing this.
  • Last-Minute Hookup: Keyla and Tato only actually get together in their final scene.
  • Lovable Jock: He's a great athlete and a better guy.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Every opportunity to make him take off his shirt was taken.

One of the most popular guys in school and an amazing dancer, Fio is quite taken with Ellen.

Keyla's old friend, the two of them fall out after Keyla's pregnancy.


  • Jerkass Realization: When she gets laughed at by everyone at school, the first person to come to her defense is Benê, making K1 realize how much of a jerk she was to her for years when Benê never deserved it.
  • Unexpected Virgin: Between being known for going out with a lot of boys and both Keyla and Katiane being sexually active, it's a surprise for everyone when they find out she's a virgin.
  • We Used to Be Friends: The 'Ks' were close friends before Keyla's pregnancy.

    "K2"

Keyla's old friend, she became extremely upset once Tato claimed to be the father of Keyla's child.


  • Continuity Cameo: Has a quick appearance in the second season of As Five.
  • Fake Pregnancy: She lies to Tato about being pregnant with his child, due to knowing how much he wants to be a father.
  • Hooked Up Afterwards: She's implied to have started a romance with Dogão in the last scene.
  • Karma Houdini: Outside of returning the cellphone she got as payment, she never suffers any real consequences for her role in the video used against her school and friends.
  • Romantic Runner-Up: She was never really competition, Tato was always going to love Keyla more.
  • We Used to Be Friends: The 'Ks' were close friends before Keyla's pregnancy.
  • Woman Scorned: She has extreme anger over Keyla and Tato's relationship due to seeing it as both of them betraying her. The second time Tato and her break up goes even worse.

One of Tina's best friends, Juca is obsessed with the idea of losing his virginity.

Principal of Escola Cora Coralina, she tries her best for the students.

Ellen's older brother, he dropped out of school prior to the beginning of the story after failing a class and having to repeat his final year. Tina catches his eye from the moment they first meet.


  • Big Brother Instinct: When he doesn't get into trouble to help Ellen, it's usually just because she managed to talk him out of it.
  • Dramatic Spine Injury: Gets into a traffic accident that causes this.
  • High-School Sweethearts: Tina and Anderson in the beginning of As Five. It doesn't last long.
  • Love at First Sight: Tina and Anderson become extremely interested in each other right from their first meeting.
  • Maligned Mixed Marriage: A lot of the conflict in Tina and Anderson's romance is this.
  • On the Rebound: His relationship with Samantha.

Literature teacher and Clara's mother, things take a complicated turn when Lica finds out her father left her mom for Malu.


  • Evil Matriarch: Clara's mother and Lica's stepmother, and neither of them have a very easy relationship with her.
  • Sadist Teacher: She makes everyone's lives hell in school.
  • Two-Timing with the Bestie: Malu's husband Luis was best friends with Edgar.
  • Unholy Matrimony: One of the biggest things Malu and Edgar have in common is that they're both terrible people.

Lica's father, with whom she has an extremely complex relationship.

Benê's mother and only caretaker, as the two of them and Benê's brother were abandoned by her husband.


  • Good Parents: Josefina's an amazing mother to both her children, having a very special relationship with Benê.
  • Struggling Single Mother: She was abandoned by her husband and doesn't have an easy life raising her children.

Lica's mother, she finds out early on the truth behind her marriage.



    Mitsuko

Tina's mother, Mitsuko isn't very good at accepting that she can't control every aspect of her daugher's life.

Clara's father, though they all find out early on that not by blood.



    Deco

Played By: Pablo Morais

Tonico's biological father (but he isn't a very good one even after finding out he has a son).


  • Romantic False Lead: Keyla romanticizes her relationship with Deco quite a bit, but ends up understanding that he isn't exactly what she made him up to be in her mind.

Played By: Thalles Cabral

Lica's neighbor, he ends up becoming interested in Benê once she starts living with her.


  • Corrupting Pornography: Being addicted to porn leads to Nem having a very complicated relationship with sex, as well as not understanding what's actually pleasing to a woman.
  • Literally Loving Thy Neighbor: Nem is Lica and Benê's neighbor, as well as Benê's main love interest.
  • The Loins Sleep Tonight: The first time Nem and Benê try to have sex, Nem can't get it up.
  • Opposites Attract: Benê's extremely organized and likes everything to be predictable. Nem, on the other hand, is immature and impulsive. Naturally they fall in love.

Miguel meets Keyla during an audition and the two quickly become close friends.

Friends with Anderson, Lito ends up catching Ellen's eye from their first meeting.

After a complicated first meeting with the girls, Samuel ends up developing romantic interest for Keyla.

Maura works with Ellen and ends up in a complicated love triangle with her and Lica.


  • Betty and Veronica: Maura's the Archie to Ellen's Betty (has similiar interests and life experiences as her) and Lica's Veronica (extremely intense and good at surprising her).
  • Closet Key: The first woman Ellen ever realized she was attracted to.
  • No Sparks: The resolution to the second season's love triangle comes from there being no sparks between them when Ellen and Maura kiss.

    Glauber

A very religious man, Glauber ends up in a very complicated situation with Tina.
