YMMV / Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo:
    • Due to the default position of enemy sprites in some animations, giant enemies tend to be aligned in a... VERY unfortunate position, which tends to lead to a Groin Attack or several, ranging from Super Full Power Saiyan 4 Limit Breaker Vegito's Active Skill repeatedly slugging the target's groin, or Piccolo (Power Awakened)'s Ultra Super Attack firing a Special Beam Cannon clean through the crotch.
    • The F2P unit [Courage to Confront Evil] Gohan (Kid)/Goku has Goku specifically using a Super Attack based on a move he performed in Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge, firing off a three-way multi-directional ki blast to fight off Cooler's Armored Squadron. However, in the game, it's rendered to a single-target attack, and the way that Goku fires it forward in the animation... Makes it look more like it's firing from his crotch.
    • [All-Out Final Battle] Super Saiyan Blue Goku & Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta's "Kamehameha & Final Flash" Ultra Super Attack might look innocent enough as the two combine their powerful beam attacks into one blast, but as they ramp up the energy output and the two converge into one solid beam, the positioning of Goku and Vegeta along with the condensed energy emerging as spheres, it can make the entire attack look extremely phallic.
  • Awesome Art: This game has some pretty impressive artwork for a mobile game, and while they did had to be rendered at a lower quality to reduce space, it doesn't make arts such as [Zealous Roar] SSJ Goku or Open The Gates of Hell] Cooler (Final Form) any less awesome. The creame of the crop are, naturally, the LR Cards, which are not only drawn after memorable moments in the anime, but are also fully animated. Check out [Golden Fist] SSJ3 Goku's art here
  • Badass Decay:
    • In a constantly evolving game such as Dokkan, it's no surprise that certain cards, especially Dokkan Fest cards, will soon fall out of the meta, being replaced by much stronger characters. These includes [Impetuous God] Beerus, who's low 60% ATK boost is seen as underwhelming compared to the much higher damaging SSJ3 Gotenks or even [Next Level Strike] SSGSS Goku, and [Heartless Destruction] Buu (Kid), who has a decent passive, but a terrible leader skill (Increases allies ATK the higher your HP is, max 50%), and his passive has too high of a threshold to maintain (HP must be 80% or above for the 50% ATK/DEF boost to work).
    • The Giant Ape/Namekian cards, while they can be a lifesaver thanks to their invulnerability, are inconvenient to depend on (They have at most a less than 25% chance to activate), and can sometimes last in between 2 to 3 turns. Though thankfully over time, new units would use the mechanic as an Active Skill with easier conditions to fulfill, making it much easier to control when you use it.
    • While it is inevitable that Anniversary units fall off due to the ever-growing Power Creep, no other unit suffers from this moreso than the LR [Ultimate and Invincible Fusion] Vegito and [Ultimate and Supreme Fusion] Gogeta. Their can be pretty much sums up as a Magikarp Power type of unit; while initially weak, as the turns pass and their passive builds up through attacks, they can deal insane amount of damage output while also being able to tank very well. At the time of release, this wasn't much of an issue as Marathon Level was prominent in the meta due to the prevalence of Fighting Legend: Goku and Infinite Dragon Ball History which is where the cards can shine. However as the bosses starts to hit harder in the earlier phases of the game along with a greater emphasis on short events such as Extreme Super Battle Road and Transcendent Gods of Destruction, their weakness unfortunately starts becoming prominent as prior to transforming, their a completely defensive liability unless they're placed in the third slot where they're reliant on a 50% dodge chance while also giving them no time to buildup due to how short they are. And to make things worse, Dokkan began releasing more and more units that have most of their passives available from turn one such as Jiren, Super Vegito and UR Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta. While most Anniversary were only usurped by their next Anniversary units, Gogeta and Vegito were notable in the fact that they're outclassed by subsequent units just a couple of months after the Anniversary ended.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • [Silent Rivalry] Paikuhan. Having been released so soon after the arrival of Super Saiyan 4 Goku and Vegeta, some players began to wonder if he had a place on a team, especially since he came to Global first, not Japan. Some felt he wasn't worth it, due to the fact that many of his Link Skills are practically useless while others felt he was worthwhile due to those same Link Skills, especially "Prepared for Battle", which was usually only for Saiyans.
      • However, both sides tends to agree with each other over the fact that the Japanese version pretty much screwed him over. While his passive has been buffed, his lack of "Fierce Battle" and "Prepared for Battle" links (being replaced with "Shattering the Limit" and "Supreme Warrior") hurts his relationship with other members of the Super INT team he's now a part of.
    • [Advent of Beautiful Love] Super Ribrianne... whoo, boy. On the one hand, Ribrianne has decent stats as she's a proper Peppy Girls Category Leader (+3 Ki, +77% HP, DEF and ATK) with a decent Passive (+15% ATK/DEF per Peppy Girls character on your team, +7777 HP per Rainbow Orb collected). However, this is Ribrianne, The Scrappy of the Universe Survival Arc for the western fans, thus many feel she doesn't deserve it at all.
    • Fans are completely divided on whether or not both Caulifla & Kale (both of whom are Base-Breaking Character in their own right, albeit far more popular than Ribrianne) deserve to have such game-breaking units particularly the LR unit themselves. On one hand, them being great units meant that having them will prove to be a huge breather when up against difficult events such as Super Battle Road or Fighting Legend: Goku. On the other hand, players criticized the girls over the fact that them of all units ended up being significantly more overpowered than other cards of the same rarity note , believing that they do not deserve to be such busted cards in the first place especially considering that other more notable units (such the Super Saiyan 4s and Super Saiyan 2 Gohan) don't even come close to the power that are the Saiyan girls.
  • Breather Boss:
    • Assuming you have [Everlasting Legend] Super Saiyan Goku, Cooler can feel almost like this, thanks to all of the Super Saiyan Gokus having an advantage towards him from phase 2 onwards. His Super Kamehameha can easily knock out 5 1/2 bars of health
    • The same can be said for having Super Saiyan 4 Goku or Vegeta and taking on Omega Shenron. In fact, there are enough Super STR and AGI GT-based Link Skill cards that you can make an entire team of them and send them after Omega and watch him drop like a sack of potatoes. Your only real hurdle would be dealing with the other Shadow Dragons!
    • If you have awakened enough characters from the Dokkan Events, then fighting Super Vegito regardless of which versions is going to be a breeze due to the fact that you need Fierce Battle link to do extra damage to him whose characters are basically those awakened from events.
    • Future Gohan's gimmick may be to constantly increase his defense each turn but unlike many other Super 2 bosses, he has no immunity to debuffs whatsoever and doesn't have an AGL type phase against a full STR lineup which makes his boss rather a breeze since you can easily stun/seal him or just lower his ATK and DEF to make things easier. You can even have a full STR lineup where since their innate attack bonus is a Critical Hit, they can easily bypass his DEF boost and hit him for full damage while shrugging off whatever attacks he delivers.
    • Unlike the two previous EZAs before him, Full Power Frieza doesn't have an immunity to a specific alignmentnote  and his weakness to Namek Saga category is easily achieved from the F2P Kid Gohan that you would likely max out and [Zealous Roar] Super Saiyan Goku that could be found from any banners. Then again, his EZA power-up isn't exactly great to begin with; he just gets DEF and Ki as the first attacker and gets a DEF boost when launching a Super Attack making his increased stats and SA level more important than anything.
    • EZA Ultimate Gohan is also rather easy due to the abundance of available PHYnote  Majin Buu Saga units, especially if you have PHY Super Vegito and SS3 Gotenks both whom will make the event an easy cakewalk.
    • Despite their immunity to all debuffs and having nine health bars, both LR Gogeta and Vegito boss battles are also among the easiest in the game due each bosses only having a single type and never changing throughout the phases, thus you can easily bring a mono team that is super effective against them and breeze through the boss with no problem as you will easily shrug off whatever attacks they inflict to you while dealing a good amount of damage in return.
    • [Saiyan Outcast] Broly, since, unlike other Z-Battles, Broly has no special immunity against certain types or classes, requires no special cards to deal extra damage, and he's an INT Type, making it even more of a breeze due to both PHY teams being ridiculously overpowered. The only hurdle you have to deal with is the fact that he can tank really hard.
      • Even after his event was updated so that Broly became an Extreme AGL type and only AGL and TEQ "Movie Heroes" category cards can deal extra damage to him, he still goes down easy thanks to the hefty amount of AGL and TEQ type cards there are that can tank and damage him, including the game breaking SSB Gogeta.
    • Like with LR Gogeta and LR Vegito, Goku and Frieza from their respective "Earth-Shaking Showdown" Dokkan Events has the bosses stick with one type for the 5 phases (AGL for Goku, TEQ for Frieza). Further more, the only boost Goku and Frieza get in their final phase are simple stun and seal immunities, so you could use characters with stat reducing Supers or passives to make it even more of a cake walk.
      • Special mention goes to Goku, since not only is he weak against [Glacial Prestige] Frieza (1st Form) (who's a TEQ type), but he's also weak to [Emperor's Devotion] Full Power Frieza, which you will be able to run on a double Frieza lead. Link the two together and watch as both cards hit Goku for nearly 1.5 million damage every time.
    • EZA Kid Buu may be immune to Devilman's lethal passive but his boss is weak to Pure Saiyans and Super AGL and STR, of which they're both really abundant especially if you own Super Saiyan 4 Goku, who will easily rip the Majin to shreds. Even if you don't have him, you can just summon him from Kid Buu's EZA banner or if you don't want to gamble summon from the Pure Saiyans Category banner where six out of seven are Super STR which is the type that is completely effective against him.
    • Out of all the 12 God of Destructions fought during the "Epic! Transcendent! Gods of Destruction Assemble", Sidra is widely considered to be the easiest among them. Not only this is because he has no gimmicks besides lowering your ATK and raising his DEF on a Super which does nothing to hamper your defenses but also because he's a PHY type enemy and STR type is widely considered to be among the best type in the game which especially includes [Fused Hope] Goku & Vegeta (Angel) where he can shrug off even a Super Attack while also being able retaliate very hard with a type-advantaged counter.
  • Breather Level: The special GT version of Battlefield from the 4th anniversary is widely considered to be significantly easier compared to the standard versions that comes before and after it due to a lack of any annoying gimmicks as well as having a wider selection of units you can choose from in this mode.
  • Broken Base:
    • Ever since Global's second anniversary and the dual Global/Japanese 200 Million Downloads Celebration, there has been a feeling of "shafting" from the Global player base. To certain players within the Global player base, they believe the Bandai Namco and Akatsuki is purposely giving the better prizes, characters, events and compensation to the Japanese players and leaving the Global players in the rain. The two pieces of proof these players use of this "shafting" is the "300 stones" compensation and the revelation that Akatsuki might be rigging rates so that newer players can get the Featured Characters in a Banner and special LR cards while making it harder for older players to do so. To the players who feel this way, this is proof that Akatsuki, if not "Scamco" along with them, is morally bankrupt and that they hope that Dragon Ball Legends mobile game will finally destroy Dokkan Battle if they, the players, don't do it first. The players who feel otherwise instead feel that these players are being overly selfish and destructive and are upset because they just can't get the best of the best no matter how "F2P" or "whaling" they are.
    • Item usage. As explained in Game-Breaker, items are extremely useful items as they can easily give you free turns or bonus ATK and/or DEF and heals in order to turn the tide back in your favor if the stage is not going your way... and it's because of this that some players sees them as a form of cheating and that their existence alone devalues the usefulness of the units themselves if for whatever reason they need a Bulma (Future) or Whis item to throw or take a punch. This debate only got worse with the 2023 WWC, with some people claiming that using items means that you haven't truly "beaten" events like "Divine Wrath and Mortal Will" or "Ultimate Red Zone [vs Dismal Future]", with many big-name Dokkan content-creators coming out in defense stating that using items are valid and that they are an intentional mechanic that the developers expect people to use unlike the infamous airplane glitch.
    • Implementing Evasion into a unit's Hidden Potential is another hot topic issue among players due to the sheer unreliability of the skill in general. Even if a unit like Ultra Instinct Goku has a 50% or higher percent chance to dodge baked into its kit, most people would not risk the chance of it failing and treat him as a slot 2 or 3 unit. Likewise, unlike Additional Attacks or Critical Hits, which adds a +2% for every level raised, Evasions increases in increments of +1%, meaning going all in on Dodge would only give your unit a 15% chance to dodge at most. Combine this with how some bosses in Red Zone, Ultimate Clashes, or even regular Dokkan Events can disable the skill entirely, many find it much more safer to invest in Criticals or Additionals, especially if the unit in question can raise DEF for every Super Attack launched or requires to be hit in order to build up its stats or trigger an Active Skill or buff (in which giving them Evasion would be counter-intuitive), yet some people tries to argue the usefulness of Evasion, most infamously DaTruth, saying that it can save a run especially in the face of a sudden enemy Super Attack, but this is very luck-based.
  • Catharsis Factor: [Indomitable Fighter] SSJ Gohan (Future)'s active skill animation has a recreation of the iconic yet tragic final Future Gohan scene of the Future Trunks special as Gohan struggles in a losing beam clash that canonically was part of the battle that costed him his life, yet here the active skill's version has the outcome change when Goku and Piccolo motivate Gohan from beyond the grave to not give up and unleash his true latent power to win which he does; and in his reveal trailer he's even matched up against the Future 17 and 18, allowing fans to finally see the two monsters get their comeuppance at the hands of their most direct victim and let Future Gohan get his well-deserved happy ending.
  • Character Rerailment: Many has stated this to be the reason as to why Dokkan Awakenings and Extreme Z-Awakenings exists, to give older cards more relevance within the current meta, such as [Fury Unleashed] SSJ2 Gohan (Youth) going from useless to a damn good support/hard hitter with his Dokkan form, [Full Power Clash], or [Surpassing All] Perfect Cell's Solar Kamehameha having his Supreme Damage modifier being replaced with not only an Immense Damage modifier, but to also heal back 10% HP every time.
  • Complacent Gaming Syndrome:
    • If you're starting out, the first proper team you'll probably build is a F2P Ginyu Force Team (as well as the LR TEQ Ginyu (Goku) card and the PHY Battlefield LR Ginyu Force), owed to their cards being entirely free with each level where their cards are obtained being constantly available as event missions every day of the week (and as of the March 2024 update in the Japanese version, permanently available in a single event without limits for the levels) having excellent stats, passives and Super Attack effects for being F2P cards, near-perfect links and even having their own exclusive potential orbs each which means you don't have to worry about unlocking other units' hidden potentials, and can even unlock their lead just by completing the full potential of the team and Dokkan Awakening them. All of this along with filling a multitude of categories as a whole which is crucial for certain missions and challenges make them basically mandatory for serious players.
    • Every time the World Tournament rolls around, don't be surprised if your friend list becomes flooded with [Death Match for World Domination] Piccolo Jr. (Giant Form), due to his ability to immediately launch a powerful AoE attack before the turn even starts with 2 or more enemies (which the World Tournament always has).
  • Continuity Lock-Out: Any unit associated with a Dokkan-original story event falls under this as despite running under Excuse Plot, you'd be lost as to why the unit exists in the first place if you skip the story associated with their events. This goes double for when the main Quest Mode released the new [Solid Saiyan Power] Super Saiyan Trunks (Teen) & Super Saiyan Broly, which made the entire community wonder just what the hell was going on there to justify the odd paring, since Future Trunks teaming up with Z-era Broly is the LAST thing anyone expected even by the game's standards.
  • Creator's Pet: Ever since Omatsu entered the producer role, people have noted that there's a sudden increase in Base Form Goku representation despite being considered the most average form of Goku in recent fan history, not just from being the new beginner LR in Update Z or having his own DFE based on the 23rd World Tournament, but also having his own Carnival LR based on the first Kai opening as well as being injected into non-Goku cards as part of that characters' animations such as LR Kid Gohan, LR Super Saiyan Future Gohan, LR Super Saiyan Future Trunks, and most randomly, the DFE [Intense Struggle for Survival] Androids #17 & #18 as part of a Unit Super Attack. This also comes at a detriment to other interesting or Extreme class units, such as him taking the spot away from LR Omega Shenron (who ended up releasing months after the 8th anniversary and is even the same typing as Kai Goku).
  • Demonic Spiders:
    • The LR cards that you will occasionally encounter during the World Tournament are easily going to be the greatest obstacle you will encounter owing to their high base stats to the point that they could easily one-shot you just with a normal attack if you do not prepare for them. This especially played even more for the AGL LRs (LR Androids, Majin Vegeta and Gotenks) where they will easily resist your AoE LR Broly's attacks and unless they are one-shotted they will probably OHKO you in return no thanks to Broly's reduced defense.
    • Every enemy in Super Battle Road in general might as well be this, having health equivalent to the Super 2 120% and Category-lead Dokkan bosses, except they come in packs and attack you all at once, with characters like Raditz leaving you for dead as their attacks can usually cleave nearly a fifth of your health. Don't have a single 120% lead or any top of the line hard-hitters and support? Have fun.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Devilman may be an SR obtained from the OG Dragon Ball summons but he well-liked by the fanbase for his unique ability to instantly kill any boss with his passive if he ever gets to activate it which makes him incredibly useful for Dokkan players to bypass the whole unit requirements for the EZA and would invest in hours and hours just for a chance to insta-kill the boss. Too bad Bandai seems to realize this and modern events began banning him in events that could actually be useful such as the Dokkan Punch Machine or indirectly ban him by adding a damage threshold for SSR or lower units which unfortunately includes the devil himself.
  • Fandom Rivalry:
    • Global vs. Japanese. Going on the /r/DBZDokkanBattle subreddit will inevitably lead to posts where Global players will accuse Bandai Namco of playing favorites, giving the Japan version of the game better cards or keeping cards away from the Global side. Though this had died down after the 3rd Anniversary.
    • Dokkan Battle seems to be getting heat from fans of Dragon Ball Legends, as those from Legends' side will criticize the game for being a bubble-popping game with glorified JPEGs, while Dokkan's side will lambaste Legends for being bare-bones in content, horrendously unbalanced, and for having unfriendly consumer practices. However, this has started to die down when both communities took notice on how badly Legends is going on the downward spiral in terms of quality, especially after their disastrous 4th Year Anniversary.
  • Fan Nickname: Because of the amount of variants of units in the game, many players have created different names to help difference them or for easier recognition.
    • Any absorption of Buu are named Buutenks (Buu + Gotenks), Buuccolo (Buu + Piccolo), Buuhan (Buu + Gohan), and Buff Buu (Buu + South Supreme Kai) respectively.
      • Humorously, [Sluggish Battle Form] Kid Buu has been named Sexy Buu, due to his wiggling card art being interpreted as more than a taunt.
    • Godku for any SSJGod Goku card.
    • Nukers for any card that can infinitely raise their attack by obtaining a huge chain of orbs.
    • Transforming Goku, Frieza and Vegeta for [Boiling Power] SSJ Goku, [Glacial Prestige] Final Form Frieza and [Limitless Combat Power] SSJ Vegeta.
    • Dadku, Brohan and Broten for the Family Kamehameha cards.
      • Consequently, GoBros for the joined LR of said Gohan and Goten [Miracle-calling Clash].
    • OGeta, to separate [The Supreme Warrior] Gogeta from his upgraded [Outshining Darkness] counterpart.
    • Trollhan for [Successor of the Strongest] SSJ Gohan (Youth), since he is an INT type like his LR [Day of Destiny] card, which can infuriate players upon summoning the wrong Gohan card.
    • Angelku for any SSJ3 Angel Goku card.
    • Baditz for [Unveiling of Power] Raditz due to being undebatably the worst Dokkan Festival unit of the modern era.
    • Leasthan or Fraudhan for [Awakened Super Hero] Ultimate Gohan, due to restricting the Beast Gohan transformation to only the Active Skill and not as a transformation unit.
    • [Limitless Magnet] Super Magnetto for [Limitless Radiance] Super Vegito, as his EZA failed to cover for his massive weakness to Super Attacks, with numerous players noting an unlucky tendency for him to get nuked by a game-ending Super Attack, hence the magnet part of his name.
    • The Time Traveler category is also called the "Space Time Transcendent" category, since the inclusion of Boujack and Buu could confuse some players over how they could have time traveled despite not having any means to.
      • Alternatively, it is also called the "Subarashii" category or the "Mortal/Ningen Slayers" category, due to Goku Black leading the Time Traveler category, it is possible to create a team consisting of nothing but Goku Black/Zamasu variants.
    • Each level of the Dokkan Leaders have been given their own names by the community based on their original release, discounting changes after an Extreme Z-Awakening.
      • God Leads (Type Ki +3 and ATK +3000)
      • Neo-God Leads (Type Ki +3 and HP, ATK & DEF +70%)
      • Demigod Leads (Type HP, ATK & DEF +100%)
      • 120 Type Leads (Super/Extreme Type Ki +3 and HP, ATK & DEF +120%; or Super/Extreme Class Ki +3 and HP, ATK & DEF +50%)
      • Category Leads
      • 200% Leads (Two categories with Ki +3 170% HP, ATK, & DEF, and a tertiary category that gives an extra 30% HP, ATK, and DEF, or one category that's just Ki +3 200% HP, ATK, & DEF)
  • Goddamned Boss:
    • The STR Janemba boss battle, unlike other Super 2 bosses, isn't really that hard, it's just that he has a dodge gimmick that enables him to evade whatever attacks land on him which includes Super Attacks and Counters. There is no way to prevent this as this dodge will work even when stunned or sealed making the event more annoying and time-consuming than anything else.
    • The Super 17 boss has a barrier that can nullify damage, and can only be disabled trough Ki-based super attacks (symbolized through a blue energy icon on each card's SA description). The only problem is that every Ki-Supers that hits 17 during his cool-down period would only result in him absorbing and regenerating his health, suddenly causing hard-hitters such as Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta and [Everlasting Legend] Super Saiyan Goku to become useless during that time. And if you have a Ki-Supering unit's Additional Attack unlocked, then you better pray that the combo doesn't trigger their Super Attack.
    • Like the Janemba boss before him, the Hirudegarn boss battle possesses an incredibly annoying dodge gimmick that can only be reduced if you either successfully manage to actually hit him (Which obviously, is very difficult considering that the initial chances of dodging is said to be even higher than Janemba) or use a support item from a limited-time story event whose sole purpose is to weaken Hirudegarn's dodge chance and nothing else. If you missed the story event and decided to do the event after the story has gone away? Then tough luck.
    • Babidi from Battlefield has the ability to seal all of your units without any way to prevent this while also guaranteeing to stun whoever he hits with his Super Attack. While this is alleviated by having lower HP than the other Battlefield bosses, having to fight him without Super Attacks is going to annoy the hell out of you and waste a lot of time as you try to melee him to death.
  • Good Bad Bugs:
    • When 3.7.1 update came out, one of the cards that became available in the Global database is the SR [Overflowing Power] Vegito, that was meant to be released at the same time as [Limitless Radiance] Super Vegito... except that the developers forgot to disable him, so a lot of players quickly took the opportunity to farm him in order to level up the Super Attacks of other base form Vegitos, including the then-recent [All Or Nothing] Super Saiyan Blue Vegito (since his SSR form starts off as base form [Determined Fusion] Vegito). The developers decided to just release him well before the official date and claim that it's all part of their plan.
    • For some reason, when certain characters launches their super attack through the Additional Attack potential system, they would often slowly tilt to the right, making them look incredibly goofy as a result.
    • [Demon of Destruction and Vengeance] Super Garlic Jr.'s passive of stunning the attacked Super Class enemy at a 30% chance is supposed to only worked at the attacked enemy. However, for some reason, his stun effect works on every Super Class enemies which before being, led players owning him to easily beat Super Battle Road due to said oversight.
    • The infamous "Airplane Glitch" where through a complicated procedure by abusing the Airplane mode, units are able to stack their ATK & DEF stats to massive levels. While the glitch has already existed since a long time ago, there wasn't a way to reliably exploit it, that is until someone found a reliable method to attain said glitch. Then in the span of an overnight, players quickly abused this glitch in order to easily clear formerly-impossible stages such as Punch Machine, Fighting Legend: Goku (GT) and (Extreme) Super Battle Road, allowing them to obtain everything there without much investment in stones. A few days later, it was eventually fixed in an update while at the same time, investigating and warning every single player that exploited said glitch.
    • [Universe's Bravest] Hercule ended up getting an incredible increase in popularity thanks to his sheer survivability against the incredibly difficult Cell Max event, with a 50% chance to dodge any enemy attack, and reducing damage from 50% to 90%, with higher levels as the player's HP drops, allowing for Hercule to tank Super Attacks that even [God's Effortless Controlling Aura] Super Saiyan God Goku can't tank without taking around 300K damage, even without a Leader Skill for him... However, what many didn't know is that the much greater survivability is thanks to a glitch from Hercule, causing his damage reduction to be applied at both the start of the turn, and potentially a second time at random chance, effectively giving him 100% damage reduction. This unit allowed many to take down the Cell Max event, and many more to scramble to defeat him with Hercule once it was announced he would be patched.
    • When Burst Mode released on Global, players took quick notice of a peculiar oversight. Specifically how the special guest lead for the event, LR [Battle Against Limits] Goku (Kaioken), had absurdly high stats, almost as if the Airplane Glitch was used on him. This allowed for him to effectively punch through the boss Vegeta for the stage like a wet paper towel, regardless of all of the challenges and buffs the player gives to the boss. Like with the above glitch, this was also patched shortly after it was discovered, and the developers nulled everyone's score back to 0 just in case.
    • The Red Zone battles for Android 19 & Gero and Super 17 have mechanics where they can absorb Ki-based Super Attacks and recover health. However, if you use [Awakened True Power] Super Saiyan 2 Gohan (Youth) with all of his passive conditions fulfilled and with assistance from [A Quest That Makes Wishes Come True] Bulma (Youth)'s Active Skill to give Gohan a full ki-board to boost his stats (and maybe a Cheelai item for extra assurance since it can change any random Ki sphere into AGL spheres while giving an extra +5% ATK boost per AGL ki sphere obtained), then you can out-damage their Healing Factor and kill them anyways.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • When [Glacial Prestige] Frieza was released, many people joked that it was possible to run a pure Frieza Family team with him as the lead. Jump forward a few months later and [Fusion with the Big Gete Star] Metal Cooler becomes a Dokkan Fest card, who leads the "Wicked Bloodline" category.
    • Likewise, thanks to the abundance of Goku cards who leader skills affects all types (such as [Courage to the Max!] Goku or [Boiling Power] SSJ Goku assuming you don't plan on running Raditz), many people have been playing around with the idea of teams containing only cards belonging to the Son Family. Come the 4th Anniversary and LR [Saiyan's Peak of Power] SSJ4 Goku is released (alongside Dokkan Awakenings [Undefeatable Clash] SSJ2 Angel Goku and [Life-Risking Super Attack] Kaioken Goku), leading the "Goku's Lineage" Category.
  • I Knew It!: Fans theorized that the 300M Download Celebration will be based around the Cell Saga due to the influx of story events released based off the Androids Saga, as well as livestream premiering on August 17 (While the exact month is unknown, the 17th is the date where Cell announced his Cell Games Tournament in a broadcast raid) combined with dataminers concluding that the celebration will start on the 27th, 10 days after the livestream. The announcement stream confirmed that the 300M Download Celebration will be based around the Cell Games.
  • Improved Second Attempt: Whenever a Dokkan Event or a character from a specific saga moment gets "renewed", many players usually praise them for being much more true to the original source, sometimes even better as in the case of any units based on Return of Cooler, as well as being absolute monsters in gameplay. This goes double if the last version of that unit was more than five years old, really showcasing just how far Dokkan has come since its humble beginnings.
    • [New Power Beyond Ultimate] Gohan (Beast) in the 9th Anniversary is seen by people online as an apology for the lackluster [Awakened Super Hero] Ultimate Gohan unit, as not only does he stay in his Beast form for the entire battle, but also contains references to Gohan's past badass moments (such as his beatdown of the Space Pirates in Bojack Unbound), as well as a direct reference to Xenoverse 2 with his Unit Ultra Super Attack where he performs the Special Beam Cannon alongside Orange Piccolo.
  • It's Easy, So It Sucks!: While initially difficult when first released, Dokkan Events nowadays ended up being criticized for being way too easy where even though units get power crept over the years, the bosses didn't get any harder. Heck it even got to the point that it became possible to clear it out entirely using F2P units without requiring any items whatsoever.
  • It's Hard, So It Sucks!:
    • The 5th generation of Battlefield is criticized for this as most the bosses hits way too hard while also having several annoying gimmicks that made the event a hassle to complete.
    • Fighting Legend: Goku (GT Edition) has also gotten flack for its difficulty, from needlessly locking two of your item slots to the fact that Goku's Super Attacks hits insanely hard on top of being able to drastically reduce your Defence with each hit. And that's not going into things like Ultra Instinct Goku, Super Full Power Saiyan 4 Goku can effortlessly dodge your attacks while disabling your ability to dodge his, or some of the teams required to beat its missions (like Corroded Body and Mind), leading to a lot of Fake Difficulty.
  • It's Popular, Now It Sucks!: Any damn good card will suffer from this at any point in time. Due to their high stats and game-breaking passives and leader skills, many players has openly stated that if a team doesn't have this particular card, then you're better off not running it. Problem is, that 9 times out of 10, said "optimal" cards are usually Dokkan Fest cards and LRs, cards that are hard enough to obtain as it is, thus many people have complained about the credibility of certain teams. Not only that, but once this new card comes out, the Friends list becomes flooded with multiple accounts with the broken card as their lead, making it much harder than it should to find a particular leader for an event.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!:
    • The SSJ Goku card given to the winner of the 250M GLB v JPN challenge has already been written off by many as a re-skinned variant of [Pinnacle of Rage]/[Zealous Roar] SSJ Goku (not helping was the fact that they're both STR types), to the point where the GLB community have decided to throw the contest in hopes of getting the much more valuable PHY Final Form Frieza.
    • LR SSJ4 Goku and Vegeta's ultra super attacks are widely criticized by many players for sharing the same animation as the Dokkan awakened F2P SSJ2 Angel Goku and Majin Vegeta, particularly coming from the amazing animations of Gogeta and Broly from the movie celebrations with many even declaring their 12-Ki supers to be better than them.
    • LR SSJ Gohan is a Super AGL Dokkan Fest unit that is severely criticized with one of them over the fact that his secondary leader skill boost Super AGL units, something that LR Super Saiyan 4 Goku already not to mention that this is already the fourth summonable Super AGL LR to be released, three of which in span of a single year.
    • A lot of players were displeased that [Target-Eliminating Circuit] Android #13 ended up being another Androids leader, being the third unit with such leader skills with many wishing that he led Artificial Life Forms whom at the time did not have a proper leader outside of AGL LR Baby Vegeta, where he only gave 130 boosts.
    • [Murderous Overlord] Boujack has gotten flak due to having his passive being virtually identical to [Extreme Ultimate Power] Coolernote , down to sharing the exact typing.
    • Fusion Zamasu's Half-Corrupted Form is still considered to be "Fusion Zamasu" in-game in contrast to other games such as Legends and Xenoverse where they're appropriately called different names. This means that [Wrath of the Absolute God] and [Infinite Sanctuary] despite being mutated are treated as Fusion Zamasu with only Exploding Rage added to the mix. This wouldn't have been as bad if it weren't for the fact that the latter shares the exact same name as the LR released a year ago which means that despite being what would have been the ideal partner as well as finally giving [Dawn of an Ideal World] his time to shine, they can't link with one another until the former turns into Infinite Zamasu which itself can only trigger 5-7 turns after his Entrance Animation begins which by that time, the Extreme INT LR's intro passive already wore off, leaving him to struggle to accumulate Ki to consistently attain his passive.
    • [Mastery of the Power of Rage] Goku Black (Super Saiyan Rosé) shares the same name as his INT LR counterpart who got an Extreme Z-Awakening 6 months ago which already deprives the latter of a linking partner that isn't [Epitome of Sublime Beauty] Goku Black but even worse is that like [Explosion of Fighting Spirit] Super Saiyan Broly released before him, he is a Super Bosses leader that can transform and unleashes his Domain with his Active Skill but as detailed in the Scrappy Mechanic below, you can only have one Domain in play at any time and to activate another one, you must wait until the previous one expires. Given just how much better it is to run Broly (or even Fusion Zamasu before him), he ended up being Overshadowed by Awesome even in the team he's made to run and players would rather run the LR over him in a dedicated Super Bosses team.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: [Earth-Protecting Flash] Super Saiyan 2 Gohan (Youth) is a nothing-special unit (especially since many view him as a lesser [Miracle-Making Super Saiyan] Super Saiyan Goku with a lot of unnecessary restrictions), but those who play the Global version use him solely to hear Stephanie Nadolny return as the voice of Gohan during his Active Skill (even if it's more for technical reasons than creative).
  • Low-Tier Letdown: Now has its own page.
  • Memetic Badass: Believe it or not the punching machines are this, being treated as Animate Inanimate Objects who can throw punches at the likes of Hercule and Ultra Instinct Goku as well as get baited by people like SSB Vegito and can even withstand blasts from LR SSJ2 Youth Gohan's Father-Son Kamehameha and SSJ4 Gogeta's Big Bang Kamehameha x100.
  • Memetic Loser:
    • [Transdimensional Instinct] Goku (Ultra Instinct) has started to get heat for this, as despite having a great (70%) chance to evade any attack, Goku would more often than not take the full heat of enemy attacks, combined with his lack of defense buff compared to his base -Sign- form, and he will single-handedly end many a run on SBR. It's gotten to the point where people will compare the dodge chances of characters like SSB Gogeta, LR Trunks & Mai, and Caulifla, citing them as better alternatives than Ultra Instinct Goku. Although, this has died down HARD after an Extreme-Z Awakening has been granted, with the form not only having defensive and guaranteed dodge upon the first turn of the transformation, but also both forms having defense stacking on top of attack stacking, allowing for the form to become a tanky dreadnought if dodging does fail.
    • [Observance of Pride] Super Saiyan God SS Vegeta got this treatment from the fandom for awhile, after failing to get an Extreme-Z Awakening for the longest time and being far surpassed as a Pure Saiyans lead, with Ultra Instinct Goku getting an Extreme-Z Awakaening before him. Fans would usually joke about Vegeta once again being in a Can't Catch Up situation behind Goku for awhile. It would eventually hit a fever pitch during the Dragon Ball Battle Hour 2022 quiz when one question asked which of four units hasn't gotten an Extreme Z-Awakening yet... With AGL Super Saiyan God SS Vegeta being the correct answer, with fans comedically admitting it was just salt in the wound at this point. As it would immediately then be announced that Vegeta would be obtaining an Extreme-Z Awakening just in time for Saiyan Day 2022.
    • [Unveiling of Power Power] Raditz has been commonly seen as one of the worst modern units of Dokkan Battle by the fanbase, and such people commonly joke about trying to beat extremely hard events such as the Ultimate Red Zone or Fearsome Activation! Cell Max with him, or him doing Radillion damage. To further add salt to the wound, [Earth's Best Elite] Yamcha has proven himself to be a solid unit as well as a much better leader for the Saiyan Saga Category (on top of more-or-less being a much-requested Z-Fighter Category leader), which pretty much solidified feelings that Dragon Ball game developers in general just hates Raditz.
    • Super Vegito in general is treated as a punching bag within the community due to his inability to take a Super Attack, especially in the modern era of challenging content. With three of his Extreme Z-Awakenings lacking any countermeasure against them along with his Squishy Wizard stats that takes too long to properly build up (if he is even able to) has lead to many calling him a magnet that can (and will) attract a Super Attack to himself, leading to an immediate game over thanks to his less-than-average defense stats.
    • [Awakened Super Hero] Ultimate Gohan has been endlessly mocked over his inability to stay in his much anticipated Beast form despite all the advertisement it got leading up to his release. Toshi of Dragon Ball Legends did not hesitate to rub this in Dokkan Battle's (and by extension due to the collaboration campaign, Fortnite) face as he proudly boasted that his game was the only internationally released Dragon Ball game to feature playable Beast Gohan during Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour 2023.

  • Most Wonderful Sound: Imagine you're on your last couple of Dragon Stones, only having enough for a few Single Summons or one Multi Summon. You go for the Summon, and you pull back for Goku's Kamehameha. Then, you hear what's practically a lifesaver that makes it all worth it.

    • Seeing Whis and hearing the taps of his staff as he rewinds time following a summon is pure bliss, as that sound guarantees that you're about to get the banner's new headlining LR or Dokkan Festival exclusive unit.
    • It's a really brief moment compared to the visual, but the little "Boop!" that goes off when the two Zenos shows up is a pure gamechanger, as much like Whis, it guarantees you'll be getting the banner's new headlining LR or Dokkan Festival exclusive unit.
  • Narm: While the game has its fair share of Awesome Art and bad-ass Pre Ass Kicking One Liner Super Attack quotes, it also has some off-model moments (such as a low-quality Paikuhan doing his Burning Shoot), and goofy quotes chosen for certain characters ([Hero's Return] Ultimate Gohan has him saying "I want to fight wearing the same outfit as my dad.")
    • Bardock (sadly) gets the short end of this, with his Time Breaker saying "I am not Bardock!" (despite totally being Bardock), and his INT SSJ3 form saying "DIE! DIE! DIE!" up launching his attack, which made many people compare him to Reaper.
    • Jiren's Dokkan event in Japanese is called "Confronting the Absolute Strongest". What did the localization team decide to call it when it was brought over to Global? "The Invincible Strongest of the Strong".
    • While the Vegeta in the 250M Download countdown banners is supposed to be the stance he took charging up his Final Burst Cannon attack, many interpret it as Vegeta T-Posing. It didn't help that the image cut off Vegeta at the waist.
    • [Battle to Become the Strongest] Super Saiyan Goku GT had a BEAUTIFUL Active Skill in which he re-enacts the Kamehameha from GT's second opening, transforming step by step from base to Super Saiyan 4 before firing off the attack. While the game uses Adult Goku's voiceline throughout the duration, it wasn't very noticeable in the Japanese version considering that Masako Nozawa's voice for Kid and Adult Goku are pretty similar. However... The Global version uses Sean Schemmel's voice throughout the whole thing, leading to a SEVERE case of Vocal Dissonance when his adult voice comes out of his child body.
    • Whether to save time or resources, the English dubbed Active Skills are, more often than not, archival recordings from past games and works. While characters like Vegeta and Gohan still sound amazing and helps bring the Active Skills to life, Goku, for whatever reason, is just all over the place in terms of quality. His voice lines are either too quiet compared to whoever he's paired with or are altered in a way where it's painfully easy to notice the post-processing. Not to mention, the sources they pull the voice clips from can make Goku sound questionably dissonant (LR [True Ultra Instinct] Goku (Ultra Instinct) sounds a bit too cheery when he's supposed to be incredibly pissed), incredibly off-putting (LR [Strike of Full Anger] Super Saiyan Goku's Angry Kamehameaha Active Skill uses the controversial "You Moron" recording from FighterZ over the more aggressive and widely available "You Fool" that has been around since Budokai 1), or just flat out bad (LR [Shattering the Limit of Spirit and Tenacity] Master Roshi's Revival Skill is the infamous example of this).
    • For some reason, even though the story cutscenes shows no qualms about using swear words when the situation calls for it, the Super Attack quotes are a different matter entirely, since they zig-zag Gosh Dang It to Heck! a lot. Goku and Gohan, despite normally being reserved even in combat, will not hesitate to call the enemy a bastard or go "Damn you!", but Vegeta, who is much more prone to anger, doesn't go any harder than a "darn".
    • Goku's line of telling Gohan to "stop acting like a pampered baby" during [Indomitable Fighter] Super Saiyan Gohan (Future)'s Active Skill, besides being an uncharacteristically dick move from what was supposed to encourage him, absolutely does not work in the context of the scene since compared to the source of the line in Boujack Unbound where Present Gohan has loved ones alive and has some mental block, Future Gohan has nobody else but Trunks and in fact, is force to constantly train himself in order to become strong enough to beat the Androids. Compare this to the line in the original JP version (and international versions based on its script) where he appropriately tells Gohan to "stop holding back".
    • [Super Power Counterattack] Super Saiyan Trunks (Teen) sounds as if the line is suddenly cut off mid-sentence; which is exactly the case not only due to being borrowed from Tenkaichi 3's line but they even cut off the rest of the line regarding Trunks' comment abount the Androids.
  • Replacement Scrappy: The Extreme Z-Area event had all but replaced the Extreme Z-Battle events for units that are freely obtainable. However, it is universally agreed by players to be completely inferior to the latter in every way due to being forced to run specific sub-par units along with a sub-par leader along with having rewards that are insultingly pitiful compared to a regular EZA event.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap:
    • Even with the Author's Saving Throw, not many people paid mind to [Naught but Rampage] SSJ3 Gotenks, seeing him as just a beefier rehash of his earlier TEQ counterpart, as well as Super-PHY being underwhelming as opposed to Cooler's Extreme-PHY team. That is, until Super-PHY made a comeback with cards like [Vanguard Warrior's True Value] SSJ2 Gohan, [Limitless Radiance] Super Vegito, [Second Super Saiyan] SSJ Trunks (Teen) and [Tight-Knit Fusion Fighter] SSJ Kefla, as well as the introductions of Categories that made him versatile on over six different teams! (Heroes, Super-PHY, Fusion, Super Saiyan 3, Hybrid Saiyans and Majin Buu Saga) Also taking into account his +120% ATK boost (+180% for the first 7 turns) and his high-damaging specials starting at 9-Ki makes it perfectly clear that this Gotenks is not going away anytime soon.
    • AGL SSJ3 GT Goku AND STR SSJ3 GT Vegeta got this, as they got re birthed following SSJ3 Bardock's event, from their respective SSJ4 events. GT Goku got a MASSIVE boost to both leader (All Types HP, ATK, and DEF +60%) and passive (ATK and DEF +90& at start of turn) Subverted a bit for STR SSJ3 GT Vegeta, as his leader got a small boost, but his passive skyrocketed alongside Goku. And these were from Dokkan's old days.
    • The Extreme Z-Awakening for the AGL SSJ3 Goku and the original STR LSSJ Broly has pulled them out of the heap, especially Broly. Their Leader Skills put them at equal footing of the original Neo-God Cards, their Super Attacks gain new buffs or debuffs (Goku's Super Attack modifier has been upgraded to "Immense" now, putting him at par with SSJ4 Vegeta on a mono-AGI team, while Broly's damage type has been upgraded to "Supreme" and now raises his attack for three turns), and their Passive Skills are much more frightening (Goku gains a +70% DEF at the start of his turn along with the usual +120% ATK boost for seven turns while Broly shakes off his Glass Cannon status to gain a +80% ATK and DEF boost).
    • STR [God of Defiance] Zamasu was seen as a largely underwhelming character, due to his low attack boost of only 60% in his TUR form. This was made even worse by the steep threshold of having to be under 80% HP (which also triggers his 10% HP healing ability). At best, people would run him as a Ki-battery for [Merciless Condemnation] Goku Black (Super Saiyan Rose) & Zamasu (made even more moot since Goku Black and Rose Black do that anyways, thanks to their passives) and maybe his healing for the Extreme-STR Super Battle Road. His INT variant, [Utopia Realized], completely re-hauls his mechanics. While still having a 60% attack boost, he has a 60% defense boost as well, and he takes 40% less damage from all attacks. Adding to the fact that he can easily maintain HP thanks to his Super Attack regenerating 7% HP every time, and you have a card that truly does justice to one of the most terrifying Dragon Ball villains in history.
    • PHY [Unstoppable Ascension] SSGSS Goku was initially one of the many lame Super Saiyan Blue Gokus out there. When it was released, it had a pathetic Leader Skillnote  and a situational Passive Skillnote , making it not worth one's while to bother with. However, when Beyond God - The Ultimate Secret updated to include Universal Survival Saga characters, this Goku was included and its usefulness shot up incredibly. He trades his PHY-focused Leader Skill to become one of the leaders of the Bond of Master and Disciple categorynote , his Super Attack now raises ATK and DEF by 20% per usage and his Passive Skill gets a massive overhaulnote
    • Before the link level update, there were a couple of links that only gives a flat bonus as opposed to a percentage boost such as Kamehameha, Saiyan Warrior Race and Legendary Power. To make things worse, these links are almost always splashed into a lot of characters, often taking up more useful links such as Vegito Blue having Kamehameha in place of Prepared for Battle or Cell having the former in place of Shocking Speed which makes them hated even more. But then come the link level update, those links are now updated into giving percentage based boosts which allow them to scale with your attack power, with Kamehameha going from a flat +2500 boost into a much more useful +5% boost and it can be upgraded further into a maximum of +10% boost.
  • The Scrappy:
    • The "Combat Power Reinforcement Summon" is widely considered to be one of the worst banner in the game due to having nothing special to distinguish it from the rest; It's not a Dokkan festival banner, it doesn't have any LRs whatsoever even though all the other non-Dokkan fest banners have them, they don't give multi-summon discounts, nor guaranteed SSR per multi-summon. All the banner does is that they guaranteed an SR rarity or higher, except for the fact that the SSR rates aren't doubled at all like a Rising Dragon Carnival do, and besides, most the featured SSRs suckednote  anyways. It would be a great banner if it appeared like say, 2015 or early 2016 but when releasing a banner during early 2018 in the advent of 120 and category leads, you begin to question why Bandai would released a banner as outdated as this. The fact that they can be summoned using the tickets purchased from the Kamehameha pack doesn't do anything to mitigate this given the fact that the pack doesn't really offer any Dragon Stones and the only cards you will get from the ticket will be the three Family Kamehameha characters to begin with.
    • R cards in general are treated as such, especially in a meta where having a team consisting of SSR and higher rarity cards are the norm. They are horrendously outclassed in both stats and passives by even the common of SR drop cards, making them serve no real purpose outside of leveling up another's Super Attack. The worse part is how they have the tendency to show up in about 60% of the Multi-pulls made, resulting in a lot of Dead Multi's, causing many people to demand that they get removed from the Premium Banners entirely and have them take resident in the Friend Banner.
  • Scrappy Mechanic:
    • The World Tournament Summon - it's a banner featuring Dragon Ball characters. The main prizes are 3-4 featured SSR units. However, because you only get one draw, no matter if you have the Gold or Silver tickets, the chances of getting the SSRs are abysmal. The two cards you're most likely to get are either Bandages the Mummy or Bacterian. This is vastly different from the Guaranteed SSR Gasha, as these cards are already SSRs, many of them can be Dokkan Awakened and even if they aren't optimal, they're still useful if not fun. They're not even worth enough to be sold for Baba points as they are treated as events drop meaning that both Rs and SRs would only grant 10 and 100 points respectively, compared to the 50 and 500 you would get from any other summons.
    • While on the topic of the World Tournament, any stamina and stages cleared in that event will not count towards whatever stamina/stage-based mission is active at the time nor do they count of link leveling so you better have some free time to do a quick story level or two.
    • The amount of rank points that you get from the World Tournament is pitifully low even early on in the game. At worst, you get 2000 points for 10 stamina whereas at best, you will only get measly 8000 points for 20 stamina for up to 20000 points from 60 stamina. This becomes really problematic if you want to earn more points by refilling your stamina through level up due to the very low amount gained unless you are fully willing to expend your hard-earned Dragon Stones so you can refill your stamina.
    • The drop system for Global's Super Gogeta/Janemba banner was widely disliked. Originally, the banner system for that was be that the two headlining characters would have a separate banner, where players could get a discount for the first two pulls (25 and 30 stones, respectively), then get a free pull after every fourth one. The Gogeta/Janemba banner... well...
      • The first pull would be at a super discount of 10 Stones... but you only get 3 cards. Your second pull would be 20 stones, but you'd only get 5 cards. Your third pull would get you the full 10 cards for 40 stones, then you get a free 10-pull, meaning you get 28 cards for 70 stones, compared to the 40 for 105.
      • After three more normal priced pulls, your eighth pull/second free pull, you would get a ticket for a Guaranteed Dokkan Festival character. This would be your only one, thus if you were one of those unlucky dopes who got someone worthless like a Buuhan that you already rainbowed for example, that was it.
      • After that, after every pull, you would get anywhere from 2-5 tickets to use to pull from a freebie version of the banner, but only being able to get up to 5 in a multi-pull. Thus, to make the most of one of the banners, a player would have to have, at the very bare minimum, 370 stones, 740 if you want to pull from both!
    • The Global-Exclusive Pilaf's Trove store is seen as one huge rip-off by just about everyone. For the minimum of $10, you can get amazingly lackluster rewards such as a collection of awakening medals that could only be used on just one character, summoning tickets that aren't even GSSR, a pitiful amount of training items and locations, and potential orbs that doesn't even max out a single character unless you're desperate enough to buy them more than once.
    • The very fact that you can only earn the Battlefield gems exactly once per run. Basically, after you defeat the SNK Boss, you will obtain a lot of gems that can be used for obtaining the Battlefield LRs. The problem is, once you defeated them you cannot obtain them again, the only way to do so is to do the weekly mission that gives a pitiful 6000 gems which means that it could take more than one Battlefield runs before you the medals needed to purchase them. To add insult to the injury while the amount of gems you earn is a fixed amount, the LR that could be purchased keeps getting more and more expensive, necessitating the need to save them and made other players unwilling to spend their Battlefield gems. To wit, while the LR Meta Cooler costs 150000 gems, LR Uub costs 250000 while King Cold and Frieza costs 300000 gems.
    • The holographic background that characters received once they are Z-Awakened is considered to be nothing but an obnoxious addition that removes much of the great backgrounds of the character's art. This is particularly played up even further when an update on Global ended up giving the LRs the same holographic background of URs with all the animations removed which completely wastes the incredible art and background of an LR despite the fact that nobody asked for it at all.
    • The last three stages of the "Fight Against Despair!" story event requires you to have [The Future Bearer] Gohan (Future) and [The Future Changer] SSJ Trunks (Future) (or his TUR Awakening [To a New Future]) The only problem is that the drop rate for these cards and their Awakening medals can range from generous to ridiculously stingy. Stages 4 and 6 has earned the ire of many players, the former for awarding nothing but Senzu Beans for their troubles and the latter for giving out more Future 17 medals than Future 18.
    • Super Dragon Ball Heroes units are only available in their exclusive Heroes banner where they have a 7% chance of pulling a featured unit and each Multi-Summon is a guaranteed Featured SSR. While that's great to obtain the featured Heroes units that were introduced, the rates for unfeatured are a meagre 3% which means that if you either missed the opportunity to summon them or you did not save any stones for them, attempting to pull the unit you missed last year will be insanely difficult, even rarer than pulling a Dokkan Fest LR especially because unlike other banner units, they were never added to the unfeatured pool for regular SSR units.
    • The conditions to trigger LR [Awakened True Power] Super Saiyan Gohan's transformation is absurdly complicated and require that you build very specific teams and categories just to fulfill it. Basically for him to transform using his Active Skill, your HP needs to be 58% or below and you need to either have Android #16 on the team, or wait until five turns have passed if you either have an Androids unit or you're facing an Androids category enemy. But the problem is, none of the Androids share any unique links with him and Gohan's leader skill does not benefit any Android 16'snote  at all with the only category where you can run them both together is under [The True Value of Perfect Form] Cell's (Perfect Form) leader skill but both of them link really poorly with him, due to lacking the crucial Shocking Speed link to give each other Ki. Not only that but in other categories you won't be able to trigger Gohan's transformation due to them not boosting any Androids in the teamnote  with the only Super AGL Android you can run in a mono team being [Love Warrior of Universe 7] Android #18 whom he shares zero links with. Oh and once you finally get him to transform, he also has one last part of the passive where he requires a Super Saiyan Goku on the same rotation for him to get the ATK boostnote  which granted could be done with the F2P Exchange Super Saiyan Goku/Super Saiyan Gohan but that leaves the only team where such conditions could be fulfilled being his own leader Kamehameha, Androids/Cell Saga as well as Goku's Family with LR Gobros as the leader (under their secondary leader skill), severely limiting your team build and hinder Gohan's full potential elsewhere.
    • Starting from the 300 Million Downloads celebration, EZA medals for freely obtainable units are now acqcuired through the Extreme Z-Area where you are required to do the event multiple times in order to fully Z-Awaken the unit which costs a lot of stamina (and no, you cannot boost your way through this). To even enter the event, you must bring a specific set of F2P units acquired through the Story event that the unit is featured in while also only allowed to bring specific set of subpar units along with being forced to run a friend leader which gives rather minimal leader boosts. And worst of all, the reward for all this is insultingly bad compared to a regular EZA event where instead of 30 stones along with a bunch of Kais, Potential orbs and a limitless amount of Hercule statues, all you get from this is a meagre 3 stones and 2 Hercule statues that does not make up for the cost required to Extreme Z-Awaken the units. To add further insult to injury, each full EZA incurs you a full 30M Zeni as opposed to the discounted 12M Zeni. Unless you have a reliable way of farming money, chances are you're gonna run out of money pretty quickly especially because you need at least 6 fully Extreme Z-Awakened units if you want to EZA a Prime Battle LR.
    • Chain Battle has been a rather odd feature, but it's VERY unfriendly to the portion of the community that hasn't been around as long. Considering you need VERY specific characters to make it far in the rankings, you'd have to collect A LOT of units in order to pull it off. And some of them (Such as Super Saiyan Vegeta (Angel)) require recently released units. So if you have a plan to save up for a later banner, good luck getting a higher ranking. And must we mention the luck factor in this? If you're unlucky, you might not even get a team of supporters that can fit the characters you bring in for the event, letalone in the main battle!
    • Starting from version 4.16, you can exchange any unusable SSR units for summonable coins that you can use to buy rare units such Dokkan Festival Exclusives, Summonable LRs, or the 50% Type supports. Sounds like a great way to sell all those units sitting in your box? Except that in order for them to be sellable, you need to fully unlock their Potential System of said units which will take a lot of Potential Orbs and depending on whether they're farmable, require you either waste Kais to level up their Super Attack or spend stamina & time to farm their Super Attack. Additionally you can only sell units that were summoned after the update but given the fact that most of the players already have loads of unusable SSRs sitting in their box anyway, this mechanic ended up being almost pointless for all but the heavy spenders.
    • Part of Dokkan's team-building gameplay is that you are able to use a Friend's lead based on the unit they picked. However, more often than not, said pick directly correlates with the unit's popularity. For example if you want use a Kamehameha or Final Trump Card team, expect to find rainbowed Gohan and Vegito/Gogeta leads everywhere with all their links fully maxed out. Conversely, doing an event where an obscure category like Namekians or World Tournament is required to either complete the missions or get bonus drops? Then tough luck even getting a single friend lead without doing multiple events in hopes of refreshing the pick enough to find even a single friend. And as more and more leaders are introduced, the available pool of units became more and more diluted to the point that finding old and obscure units to complete events became more difficult. While some events do provide special friends without relying on other players, those are far and a few between and they're incredibly weak as they have no Potential System boosts. More often than not, much of the difficulty when it comes to the events isn't when they can complete the stage but whether or not they can find an optimal friend lead with a fully awakened Potential System and links fully leveled but depending on the category's popularity, can potentially take tens of minutes just to find them.
    • Each of the Support Memory Films caps at 200 and given the fact that the Support Memories can cost between 70-150 Films, after a few playthroughs, you are required to either do a couple of runs or purchase more of them in Baba Shop using Baba Coins (and they're exactly cheap when it comes to costs either...). In multiple Support Memory runs, you would have to go to Baba Shop to reload each Films every 1-2 playthroughs which not only gets tedious but also rapidly drains your Baba Points to the point that you might completely run out of them with the only way to get additional points is to sell characters that you pulled from summons.
    • For some reason, Akatsuki decided it was a good idea to enforce a daily limit on the Punching Bag, Gods of Destruction, and Ultimate Red Zone events, preventing players from trying over and over to replay these events until they managed to find a strategy or starting rotation that works. The main reason why fans are complaining is because these events are difficult for the wrong reasons (even with the strongest units at their max potential, bosses like Super Baby or Beerus can easily cleave a good chunk of your health, and the punching bags are heavily RNG dependent), thus making people accuse the developers of artificially increasing the difficulty. Thankfully, for the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero campaign event in which players take on an ABSURDLY powerful Cell Max, that in the final phase hits even harder than Ultimate Red Zone Broly and Omega Shenron for reference, with only Senzu Beans to use as items, this daily limit is removed, allowing players some leniency to experiment on how to take them down.
    • Having bosses become immune to negative ailments such as Stuns or stats reductions as well as disable your dodging capabilities (and, depending on the boss, lock your units in place) are a hot topic, and has been seen by many to be a cheap gimmick by the developers to artificially inflate the difficulty of already difficult events like The Ultimate Red Zone or the Fighting Legends events, as it boils the fights down to less strategy and skill and more praying to the gods that the end phase bosses won't beat your team to submission (which, nine times out of ten, they will do). Said boss buffs also makes characters like Caulifla and Hit borderline worthless to use in said events, as they heavily depend on evasion and stuns in order to become viable in combat, so you're pretty much forced to bring one type of team rather than experiment with other compositions.
    • A couple of units in the game has a chance for them to guard against all attacks (which is among the best passive in the game as it directly reduces the damage you take) where depending on the RNG, will either work or don't. The scrappy part of this is the fact that the game gives no indication as to whether or not the passive even activate so in order to make use of such ability you have to gamble by placing a unit whose guard maybe activate to where most of the enemy attacks lie and either it trigger and you take no damage, or it doesn't work and get instantly comboed to death by the enemy whereas another unit in the same rotation would have survived the onslaught of attacks otherwise.
    • Whenever there are two Ki Spheres of different color in the same chain that gives the same amount of Ki collected, the game will always prioritize a Ki Sphere of the same color as the unit's typing. While this is an Anti-Frustration Feature to allow other characters to collect said Ki Sphere, some of the units have their passive trigger upon collecting at least a certain number of Ki Spheres and for instance if there are 6 INT Ki Spheres and 3 PHY Ki Spheres in the same chain, rather than collect the 6 INT Sphere for [Fighter Entrusted with Allies' Wishes] Super Saiyan God Goku's full passive, the game will choose the 3 PHY Ki Spheres instead which screws you out of his guard and additional Super Attack passive.
    • Transformations that are locked behind and turn and HP requirement are considered to be the worst conditions in the game. Alone and mutually exclusive, they're considered to be the easiest to achieve; the former is self-explanatory while the latter can reliably triggered during the first few phases of the fight when the enemy doesn't hit as hard but when put together they're very strenuous and frustrating as if you got unlucky and the enemy Supers a type-advantaged target in the first few turns, then you're forced to cling on and try to hide away the squishy untransformed unit if they didn't meet the turn conditions lest they end your current run. Furthermore, due to the way that Super Attacks are calculated, as the enemy's attacks get stronger, the gap between Super Attacks and normals exponentially grows so a unit that can tank regular attacks for double digits has a chance of getting one-shotted from full health if that attack is a Super so a unit that managed to survive is considered to be an achievement than actually the norm making it even more impossible to meet said conditions.
    • Only 1 character can activate their Revive ability per battle, ostensibly to balance the mechanic back when it was introduced during the 6th Anniversary. While it wasn't early when so few characters can activate it and not really reliable at that, as more and more characters are introduced that have easier Revive conditions including a 200% lead for the Category, said limit ends up becoming a huge hindrance to the team as some of the characters also gain benefit if they get the Revive boost with the sole exception of [Showdown of the World's Strongest] Goku whose passive can also activate if other characters trigger the Revive. This especially becomes a huge issue when using a dual leads that are reliant on their Revive for their full passive such as [Extraordinary Super Warrior] Super Saiyan Goku or [The Ultimate Shadow Dragon] Omega Shenron where if one Revive, the other will have their passive permanently locked out for the rest of battle.
    • Only 1 Domain can be in play at any time and to trigger another one, you must wait until the previous one expires which can lasts for up to 4-5 turns. The scrappy part of this comes from the fact that characters who unleashes their Domain also has other buffs in them such as their Transformation. This means that if they want to transform with said character, then you must wait for a while before they can do so and given the prevalence of turn-based buffs, said character will probably be left defenseless and will get you killed.
  • Shocking Moments:
    • The LR characters, specifically Super Saiyan Goku when he was first announced. Though they are hard to get, they boast the highest possible stats, have Super Attacks AND Ultra Super Attacks, and their card arts are just pretty to look at.
    • Cooler getting a Dokkan Event, since to some, he was the last person they expected to get treatment. And yet he remains as one of the best PHY Units in the game.
    • Global is getting this hard with INT SSB Vegeta getting announced WAY before STR Perfect Cell.
    • And then there's LR Broly. Not because it's a new LR, but because it was an LR exclusive to the Global version of the game for a few weeks before debuting in the Japanese version.
    • Then came the Otherworld Tournament event, which gave fans the Super Kaioken Goku and what is considered the best Paikuhan of the bunch.
    • Extreme Z-Awakening, anyone?
    • Global was taken off-guard by the arrival of what they call "Rage Vegeta", which is based off of Vegeta's Rage Breaking Point from Dragon Ball Super's version of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods.
    • Global bringing in the Transformation mechanic months ahead of schedule* in the Tournament of Power Celebration event, bringing to Global the long awaited Dokkan Awakening for Ultra Instinct -Sign- Goku.
    • The announcement of the long awaited 250M Download celebration, and just like the one before it, another Global VS Japan battle. The theme? Goku vs Frieza!
    • Then there's the reveal of 2 LRs (One gacha, one F2P), a New Piccolo with his own Extreme Z-Battle, and 2 new Goku and Frieza cards. The kicker with the last point? They evolve one level every turn mid-battle (Goku from SSJ1 to SSB, Frieza from First Form to Golden).
    • Meta-Cooler's Dokkan Fest. His leader skill provides the "Frieza Race" category with a god-like boost (170%!), is revealed to have intense hard-hitting and regenerative abilities, and his Super Attack animations are considered superior to the animation in the movie he appeared in.
    • The New Year banner that was released on both versions due to the fact that they give you a Guaranteed EZA unit, a 120 lead, a category lead, and a guaranteed SUMMONABLE LR unit from each multi summon.
    • [Transdimensional Instinct] Goku (Ultra Instinct -Sign-) getting an EZA on the 6th anniversary is a huge surprise to everyone considering that the 120 leads haven't even finished getting their EZAs at the time of release not to mention that anniversary campaigns do not usually Extreme Z-Awaken summonable units, let alone even getting an Extreme Z-Battle in the first place. And then the anniversary takes it up to eleven by granting the very first LR Extreme Z Awakening with [Miraculous Outcome] Goku & Frieza (Final Form) (Angel).
    • The 7th Anniversary celebration brought to us two new LR units, Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta, and Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Goku & Vegeta. And with them, not only did they bring TWO Active Skills (One a transformation and another an attack) and intro animations, but 200% Leader Skills via giving an extra 30% boost to a third category (In this case being Kamehameha units) within the two 170% categories the two lead.
  • Special Effect Failure:
    • The fact that [Full-Tilt Kamehameha] SSJ2 Youth Gohan's walking animation is just the card art bouncing and zooming did not go unnoticed by players. Thankfully, Akatsuki has finally gotten around to fix this, giving him a proper walking animation.
    • With a move like x100 Big Bang Kamehameha, you expect some awesome energy blast on par to how it's seen in games like Budokai 3 or Ultimate Tenkaichi. Except here, it looks like Gogeta's just spraying his opponent with water from different angles. Many players have also stated just how much the animation overstays its welcome time and time again.
  • "Stop Having Fun" Guys: The Reddit subforum dedicated to this game is full of these people. Due to the fact that the Global version is many months behind the Japanese version (and may never catch up due to the Global version not carrying events involving things like Dragon Ball Heroes), many of those on the forums tend to play the Japanese version and look down upon the Global version.

This can be seen with players' request on if they should pull on a certain banner. The usual reaction to this is usually "No, wait until X Banner" as they will feel that any banner outside of that very banner is a "trap banner" designed to steal away stones on useless pulls despite the fact that those banners can be just as bad. Even more, the certain banner players suggest rolling on could be months away, which means players could be sitting on a plethora of stones waiting for that right banner and just holding on to them for a long time.
    • A good example of this could be seen with the "Looking for Mr. Right" Japan vs. Global event, which saw players competing to see who would win a special "BADMAN" Vegeta card or get the Booby Prize of a Yamcha card. When Global lost, automatically players made accusations of the event being rigged and calling players who messed with the Japan version "traitors".
    • This also extends to the idea of using Potential Orbs on anyone not an "optimal" character. Decided to use your Potential Orbs on a freebie unit? Expect your choice to be hosted on one of the Reddit boards and having the person ask why someone who would do such a thing.
  • Surprise Difficulty: When Ultimate Red Zone [Dismal Future Edition] was announced, the first two stages released was Future 17 & 18 and Imperfect Cell. Future 17 & 18 aren't too bad of a challenge, which made many attribute the same mindset to Cell in the next stage after. Enter Imperfect Cell and his stats comparable to Red Zone Cell Max, Metal Cooler Core, and Birth of the Shadow Dragons Omega Shenron, with normals and Kamehamehas that can cleave through even Power Awakened Piccolo at his maximum defensive state. This in turn made many weary about the inevitable Goku Black and Zamasu stages.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: Dokkan Battle has made enough "lawyer-friendly" tracks over the years that many assume it was deliberate in order to avoid having to run into any legal issues trying to get certain characters in while keeping the spirit of their iconic battle themes. This includes themes like INT Ultra Instinct Goku sounding like "Ultimate Battle", LR Gogeta's transformation theme sounding like "Broly VS Gogeta", and rather blatantly, PHY Super Saiyan God Goku's Active Skill theme being a dead ringer for FLOW's "HERO -Kibou no uta-".
  • That One Attack:
    • Any events where the bosses that are capable of lowering your DEF with their Super Attack. While its completely useless against enemies, against the player where DEF is crucial, they will receive huge amounts of damage no matter how much DEF they had and even worse if it's the first of the several attacks, then subsequent normal attacks will absolutely cause innumerable damage to the defenseless target probably to the point of instant death. And much like the bosses, the only way to mitigate this is if the player use damage reduction tanks such as TEQ Golden Frieza or AGL Super #17.
    • Mosco's Super Attack affects every single allies on your rotation and it's not like Broly's where his attacks do pitiful amounts of damage on each of your rotation. Nope, he deals at least 300k damage to each of your units. This in effect turns his event into a luck-based mission where if he decides to launch a Super Attack and you have a squishy ally in your rotation, then you're utterly screwed regardless of where you placed them.
    • Broly's Super Attack, like Mosco damages all enemies only Broly hits even harder is what led to many players loss. In fact, a lot of players are forced to stack the Whis support item just to survive from being KOed but then that would leave them defenseless against the final phases of the fight where Broly is capable of Super Attacking twice a turn.
    • Fusion Zamasu can do 1 AoE normal attack every turn like Syn/Omega Shenron. While that doesn't really sound bad, the problem with this is that not only does it hit even harder than Omega during the final stage but he does in the very first turn of the battle. This means that any units that gains most of their DEF on attacking are left utterly defenseless as your unit will take significant damage if the AoE happens before any of your units attack and even then he still can Super you right off the screen to the Event menu. Zamasu's presence single-handedly warps the players perception regarding a unit's defensive power as if said unit cannot tank before attacking at all, then they're utterly worthless to use.
  • That One Boss:
    • The Dokkan Event bosses. All of them come with multiple HP bars, but they have varying ridiculous skills. Characters like Super Saiyan 3 Goku, Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta and Full Power Frieza will kill you if you don't finish the fight within a time limit (6 turns usually). Other characters, like Broly and Super Vegito, require a certain link skill or passive ability to bypass their super armor and defeat them. Others, like Cell, have healing that regenerate a large amount of HP.
    • Played straighter than the Special Beam Cannon in regards of Super Buu (Gohan Absorbed). That asshole is constantly changing forms and types so you can't be consistent on type-advantages. He can (and will) heal all damaged dealt to him in his third phase, bringing you back to square one (he has five layers of health), can tank a beating all while constantly dishing out super attacks that can take out more than half of your health, and you have to beat him nearly 33 times if you ever want to think about Dokkan Awakening all of the featured units in that event.
    • Super Saiyan Gotenks 3 in both version is also one. Gotenks starts out normal as he starts as Goten and Trunks, then fuses into Super Saiyan Gotenks after you beat them. It's when you beat the PHY Super Saiyan Gotenks that things go crazy. He'll start off as Super Saiyan 3, who has insane defense (which even dulls attacks from its INT weakness), then spends every other turn changing between Super Saiyan 3, base Super Saiyan and just normal Gotenks. You want normal Gotenks, as he has the weakest defense, but what form he takes is random: he could bounce between base and 3 and stay away from normal the entire time.
    • Broly is another. In his Stage 2 mission, he has a super armor that reduces damage up to a certain amount and his Stage 3 mission pushes the threshold even higher. The only way to get past this super armor is to have certain characters that either greatly reduce defense after a super attack(you have to do this twice), negate the ability as a passive or negate the ability as a Link Skill. The big problem to this is that the Link Skill one only works towards certain characters and isn't passed down to other heroes among you. The best you can do is hope you have characters who can greatly lower DEF should you go in without any of them.
    • Final Form Cooler joins in if you don't have the LR Goku. First of all, only Super Saiyan Gokus can inflict extra damage of Cooler. Only Super Saiyan Goku. Next, keeping with the events of Cooler's movie, the Support Items Icarus and Senzu Bean are unable to be used (as Icarus is shot down and the Senzu Beans stolen and destroyed.) Facing Final Form Cooler is a pain as he'll tear through your defenses like so much toilet paper (even Mighty Glaciers like Super Vegito and Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta quake at his power!) and if he hits you with Death Crasher, he'll be planting a Dumbass Tree with you as the tree!
    • To say that defeating Super Saiyan 3 Goku (Angel) is difficult is a huge understatement given the immense amount of handicaps against you. Firstly unlike other Dokkan events, you absolutely cannot continue if your hit points goes to zero so if you had a bad luck and your opponent manage to use a Special Attack on someone he is strong against, say goodbye to the 40 or 50 staminas you've spent to fight him. Also like all other Dokkan bosses, he employs a damage reduction only there is now way to nullify this making him ridiculously tanky and hard to kill. But it is only when you fight the final stage of the boss does the hair-raising frustration sets in where like his living self, he starts a countdown where if it hits 0, you are instantly killed. And unlike other countdown bosses who only possess 1 health bar, Angel Goku possesses seven health bars so unless you managed to stun & seal him or have a huge nuker like LR Youth Gohan, there would be no way for you to prevent his Super Attack from instantly killing you. What's even worse is that he completely negates any form of damage reduction skills so you can't even try and tank him with either Super Vegito or Golden Frieza. And if you want to Dokkan Awaken your Angel SSJ3 Goku that you just obtained, you have beat the stage at least 11 times on Super 2 if you want to get the medals required to awaken him.
    • SSJ4 Gogeta is this by a MILE. First, you have to beat SSJ4 Goku, which isn't very hard. The next phase is a bit harder, with SSJ4 Vegeta joining the fight, forcing you to pick which one is the bigger threat. After this, it gets HARD. SSJ4 Gogeta appears with 6 bars of health, hits hard like a truck, takes damage from you with almost no effort and is completely immune to both stun and seals. The kicker? This isn't the last part. That goes to the 9 bar of health (3.6 million hp) SSJ4 Gogeta with the same immunity after you beat phase 3. Also, Gogeta has a high damage reduction skill that can't be nullified, so have fun!
    • Think that the Masked Saiyan would be as much of a cakewalk as other Super 2 bosses? Then guess again as the "unknown" Saiyan has ridiculously high attack and defense stats along with an unullifiable damage reduction which means that if you are not careful or have bad luck on your side then chances are, you could probably have a lot of Dragon Stones down the drain. But what makes him amp the difficulty even further is the ability to randomly seal one of your characters so if he manage to seal the only hard hitter on your team, then unless you use up one of your items that dispel the debuff, then you would have ruined your chances of inflicting damage on him and completely waste a turn. You could try use a mono-INT team so you could easily get a massive advantage over him but then you would have to deal with Mira first and unless you got a critical hit on one of the characters (which would require you to dupe someone in the hidden potential system since evasion is the free special attack) or have INT Gogeta on your team, then chances are you would probably be forced to use a Dragon Stone before you get to the third phase.
    • Unlike other Dokkan bosses, Super Saiyan 3 Bardock has five full phasesnote  each with different types so no matter which mono team you use, there will always be one type that could wall your non-crit attacks. Also at the fifth phase, you only have three turns before he will use an instant K.O attack that cannot be dodged or stopped at all and will net you an immediate game over. Only problem is that he has eight health bars worth and his stats can't be lowered so unless you bring a hard-hitting nuker in your team, then you probably wouldn't be able to stop him from slashing you out of existence.
    • The Prime Battle events are seen as this, mainly due to needing Strike, Story, or Dokkan Event characters, meaning you'll have to Dokkan if you want an easier chance of beating it.
    • Extreme Z-Awakening. To get the full power of an Extreme Z-Awakening, players must charge through 30 stages of an increasingly stronger and more powerful character. With each victory, their HP, Strength and Defense grows, they grow invulnerable to status effects and they even resist damage from certain character types even if they are under the weakness category. The difficulty of the boos often directly correlates to the amount of card pool of that specific alignment or category available. This can range from either really hardnote  to medium but manageablenote  to really easy but the latter only encompass the non-Gacha EZAs so it's expected to be easy.
    • Ultra Instinct Goku's Dokkan event is also one giant hurdle to overcome. His first two phases aren't that bad to handle, just a straight forward match against [Fateful Strike] SSG Goku and [Drive to Win] SSB Goku. It's his third phase where things get wonky. He reverts back to [Great Brilliance] Goku, and he only attacks once per turn... except unless you stun or seal him, he'll keep dishing out Spirit Bombs, all of them hit for 4 Million damage every time. More than enough to deal a fatal damage against you. Oh and he is a STR type too so if you bring a mono PHY team, expecting to deal with UI Goku, then trying to burst him down before you run out of Support Items prove to be really hard. But it doesn't stop there, as you now have to fight Ultra Instinct (Sign) Goku with his mastered UI form following after. He has nearly 10 health bars, can tank like a champ and is completely immune to all debuffs, while also being able to dish out heavy strikes in return. And the only character that can bypass his defenses? Jiren.
    • While most of the Battlefield bosses are difficult but still doable, one boss that will make many players pull their hair is Zamasu. See every other turn, he will heal for 3.22 million HP and it cannot be stopped or nullified under any circumstances unless you gut lucky enough to stun him on top of hitting hard and having a gigantic health bar. Unless you have the cards to consistently outdamage the immortal god, then he will likely be the bane for many players in the Battlefield with the Final Boss being far easy in comparison to him.
    • Kid Buu from Battlefield is insanely tanky, will hit really hard (especially from his Super Attack that will lower your DEF), can heal a bit of HP, and he even has a chance to dodge your attacks. You'd better be very prepared to fight against him or he will single-handedly end your whole Battlefield run.
    • Jiren from Battlefield take the Lightning Bruiser traits from other bosses up a notch with some even declaring him to be harder than the Superboss that is Goku's Legendary Battle. To wit, he has an insane amount of HP, comparable to that of Bardock and he hits insanely hard, in particular his Super Attack that greatly lowers your DEF, easily outlasting your entire team.
    • Omega Shenron like all final Battlefield bosses, not only hits incredibly hard but also massively lowers your DEF on a Super Attack but what sets him even further above the rest is that he is capable of locking out your rotations. This essentially turns the Final Boss into a Luck-Based Mission. And depending on your luck, if he locks your squishy target with all attacks coming from that rotation including a Super Attack, then expect Omega to dish out a Curb-Stomp Battle where you're unable to deal any damage to him. He's so unfairly difficult that they have nerf him twice by lowering his HP, ATK and even his chance of launching an SA.
    • [Reign of Terror] Frieza (1st Form)'s Extreme Z-Area not only hits incredibly hard but most the units that you are required to run can't even tank well against his attacks. Among the 6 units available, only 2 can reliably tank his super attack but only because of type advantage. To add further insult to injury, you are only are able to run the mediocre Krillin as the friend leader who can only tank at an unreliable 30-50% rate, forcing you to run 2 potential dead-weights in the team. All this makes the event an entirely RNG-fest Luck-Based Mission. Got lucky with your rotation by having Bardock/Piccolo & Frieza attacks only 1 slot or Bardock himself turn into a Giant Ape? Then you have effectively won the event. Consequently you got a double Krillin and Gohan rotation? You'd better pray that Krillin's guard chance activates or you've effectively kiss your 25 stamina goodbye.
    • Destined. Rivals. Saga. 3. It's a Dual Boss Extreme Z-Battle where you face off against both Super Saiyan 4 Goku and Vegeta, and are both weak to the Artificial Lifeforms category. However, it does not matter if you have the Dokkan Fest Majin Buu and/or the LR Super Baby 2 cards, Goku and Vegeta will cleave through your health like wet paper from the onslaught of normal attacks alone. And God forbid if they both decide to launch their Super Attacks one after another. The only saving defensive grace you'll have against them is using the Game-Breaking TEQ Caulifla or the equally useful AGL Shape-Up Buu for their evasive skills.
    • Belmod is easily considered to be the hardest boss in the "Epic! Transcendent! Gods of Destruction Assemble" event. While he has a far lesser health pool than all the other Gods besides Heles, this is of little comfort compared to the number of devastating gimmicks thrown at you. Firstly, this Clown has the ability to lock your rotations so if he locks a unit like say, Goku & Frieza in the first slot, then you can't do anything as he hits your defender very hard right down to a Super Attack that one-shots you. Oh and he can also Seal your team so if he seals the afromented Goku & Frieza, then his damage output got severely gimped. As if that wasn't enough just like Liquiir he can launch two Super Attacks in one turn and each one of them lowers your DEF which will easily devastate your run. His boss fight pretty much made the run a Luck-Based Mission where it entirely depends on whether or not he's gonna lock your squishiest units in the slot where he does most of the attacks.
  • That One Level:
    • The Dokkan Punch Machine! gives out the player Potential Orbs, Zennies or Dragon Stones based on how hard you hit the machine with the maximum being 77 million which means you need to have a nuker to even reach that amount. Note that Devilman and items are not allowed so you can't cheat your way out of this. Unfortunately, many players even whales call this event frustrating and compares it to getting a needle in a haystack for multiple reasons. First off, you can only do this event twice a day and in each one, you only have two turns to hit it really hard so if your intended nuker like say, LR Gohan is in the last slot, then you practically screwed. Also two of the nuking leaders (Baby Vegeta and SS3 Ape Goku) have a Great Ape transformation so if you get really unlucky and they transform, then you have completely wasted the chance since Great Apes last at least two turns. And even if none of the two misfortune happens, there is still the fact that you need Ki changers to convert them into a single orb so if they didn't change sequentially, then you won't be able to connect them together for a single boost. On the plus side, the event is open everyday so you can repeatedly try again but that would just give players more incentive to hurl their phone on the wall...
    • 200% Perfect! Combat Simulation is a Challenge Event where you are required to defeat the boss as quickly as possible with 2 turns being one that gives the biggest amount of rewards and with each level, different categories will be effective against them. While that sounds a fun mode on paper, the problem is the fact that the bosses have such titanical amount of HP that even under the hardest hitting team using an item, you can only reduce their HP to 0 in as early as turn 4. Thus in order to reach the damage output needed to K.O. the enemy, you practically need to nuke the enemy but even that is incredibly difficult as they banned every Type nuking leads, forcing you to run All-Type Nukers such as Towa, Goten or Candy Vegito as leaders. And even then, because you can only run one support item in this event, you still need both Critical Hits and Additional Super Attacks in order to Knock out the enemy within a single blow to attain the full mission reward. In other words, you're relying on RNG piled up upon millions of RNG just to achieve the perfect result, which will easily take hundreds, if not thousands of attempts to do so. In a nutshell, what was supposed to be a fun event ended up becoming "Dokkan Punch-Machine 2.0" with a far worse mechanic and even bigger RNG.
    • While Extreme Super Battle Road is obviously meant to be harder than their normal SBR stages, some of levels have the enemies' stats being hugely inflated in order to compensate for the number of powerful units released. This is particularly true for Universe Survival Saganote , Movie Bossesnote  and Pure Saiyans where the enemies hit so hard that not even a Whis can save you from imminent death. Thus the stage is turned into either "dodge attacks or get killed" or "kill enemies before you get killed" as no amount of DEF, damage reduction or support items will save you from instant death.
    • [Raging Killer Move] Krillin's Extreme Z-Area's requires you to bring [Shocking Contact] Android #18, [Strike From on High] Dabura, [Diabolical Strike] Nappa, [Awakened Saiyan Blood] Vegeta, [Followers of His Ideals] Zarbon & Dodoria and [Storm of Terror] Frieza (2nd Form) to the event. See where the problem is? None of said leader skills can buff any more than 3 of these units and with the guest leader being set to Zarbon & Dodoria, using them as the leader meant that the only other units that benefit from the LS is Nappa and Frieza, leaving the 3 other units completely without the boost. This meant that players are forced to hide both Vegeta and Dabura (or pray that he can stun Krillin to not get hit) from the latter's attacks because getting even a single hit warrants instant death and the stamina spent go to waste. If you really want to EZA Krillin, then expect to spent a lot of meat and even stones for STA just to attempt the event every time.
  • That One Sidequest:
    • LR Androids 17 and 18: First players must pull the SR [Unbridled Horror] Androids 17 and 18 from the Friend Summon. After Z-Awakening them, you must obtain three medals each from the Broly, Kid Buu, Perfect Cell, Super Saiyan 3 Goku and Super Gogeta Dokkan events. After Dokkan Awakening them into SSR [Agile Dash] Androids 17 and 18, you have to Z-Awaken them again, then obtain seven medals each from the Janemba, Frieza, Ultimate Gohan, Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta and Beerus Dokkan events. After Dokkan Awakening them into TUR [Ingenious Collaboration] Androids 17 and 18, you have to obtain a whopping 77 medals each from Super Vegito, Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks, Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Kaioken Goku, Super Buu and Golden Frieza events to Dokkan Awaken them into LR [Limitless Energy] Androids 17 and 18.
    • LR Super Saiyan Goku: Before, players must make a team comprised of characters obtained from daily Strike events and have them Dokkan Awakened to Super Strike units. To do this, you have to not only obtain medals from a special event which can only be faced with a team of seven with a team cost of 100 (counting the friend!), but also obtain special Turtle and Bulma medals that can only be obtained through the World Tournaments! Once you get the six Super Strike characters, you can finally face down the special event "Transcended Warrior", which only comes around on Saturdays. You have to fight the first stage to obtain the SSR [Furious Limit-Breaking] Super Saiyan Goku. After Z-Awakening him, you have to complete the second and third stages to get medals to Dokkan Awaken him further. First, you need to get 15 medals to Dokkan Awaken him to the TUR [Immovable Entity] Super Saiyan Goku. Then, you must obtain a whopping 777 medals to get the LR [Everlasting Legend] Super Saiyan Goku. Thankfully when Stage 4 was released, the restriction changed to cards you can get during the story and events (no summon or gifted cards).
    • Getting LR Hercule is ridiculous! To get him, you must draw SR [Earth's Savior] Hercule from the Friend Summon. Then, you must obtain Hercule's Champion Belt Awakening Medals, which cost 1 million Zeni in Baba's Treasure Shop and you can only get 3 a day. Getting 10 can allow you to Dokkan Awaken into SSR [Champion's Roar] Hercule, getting 20 allows you to become TUR [Stacked Force] Hercule and 70 allows you to reach LR [A Strange Friendship] Hercule. However, this is mitigated by the time and cost gates - because you can only get 3 a day at 1 million Zeni a piece means that, not counting training and Awakening costs, it will take you a whopping 100 million Zeni and 34 days to reach full LR!
    • LR Spirit Bomb Goku requires that you spend at least 1000 days in Dokkan Battle which is almost three years worth of gameplay which means that you have to start playing at 2015 and never letting up till 2017 note . If you just started in later years like 2016 or even 2017? You basically have to wait for a long time before finally getting him and by that time, he would probably already been power crept by stronger, more efficient characters. And this is before he gets his EZA where you require another 1000 days of login which is excruciatingly long for Gacha standards and chances are, by the time you get his EZA, he's probably already power crept out of the meta anyway
    • Obtaining LR Kid Gohan requires that the player completed the Super Battle Road levels multiple times at up to 5 times so you can dupe them all in the Hidden Potential system. Sounds simple right? It would, if it weren't for the fact that the enemies of Super Battle Road are ridiculously hard where even if you are required to use a type advantaged team against them, they still hit incredibly hard and has a tremendous amount of health and defenses where you will get easily hit by at least 40k normal attacks and 100k Supers even when you managed to guard their attacks and can easily survive even a point blank nuke that would one-shot most other Dokkan bosses. And if you managed to fully beat the mode, chances are, you probably wouldn't need Kid Gohan to help you against other bosses anyway making him a Bragging Rights Reward more than anything.
    • To obtain LR Vegito Blue, you have to purchase him from Kai stones that you obtain the base SSR [Determined Fusion] Vegito from the Supreme Kai's Trials at 30 a piece (Which totals 150 to fully unlock him). After Z-Awakening him, you have to obtain 30 Potara awakening medals that are spread across the quests before you Dokkan awaken him into the UR [Engraved Strength] Vegito. Then, to Dokkan awaken him into an LR, you have to obtain the same 70 medals before you finally Dokkan awaken him into an LR [All or Nothing] Super Saiyan God SS Vegito. Of course, obtaining the medals is easier said than done given the fact that you will need very specific character links and types to even get the medals such as Z-Fighters, Golden Warrior and Fierce Battle which means that it will probably take a while along with a stone or two before you can even get the medals needed to awaken him.
    • In order to get the EZA medals for the Prime Battle LRs, you need to obtain a set amount of Freely Obtainable units in order to do their Extreme Z-Area stage. Said units must also be fully Extreme Z-Awakened and you must fully awaken their potential system. Not to mention that most of the units also require to do their respective Extreme Z-Area where you can only run a specific set of units in order to do their event in the first place which adds to the layer of grind required. To make things even worse, fully awakening them requires as high as 30 million Zeni' which neccesitates even more grinding for Zennies. It can takes weeks and tons of resources just to be able to attain all the units before you're allowed to attempt the Event. Additionally, the next set of Prime Battle EZA also require that you run the previous Prime Battle LR. Want to get STR First Form Frieza's EZA? Then you also need to fully EZA the TEQ Super Saiyan Goku.
    • [Wings Spread Out to the Cosmos] Pan (GT) (Honey)'s Extreme Z-Area has a limited time Extreme Challenge Campaign where if you fully Extreme Z-Awaken the LR during the duration it's available, you will be able to get a total of 15 Dragon Stones and 5 Elder Kais in addition to the 6 Stones and 1 Elder Kai you get from fully Awakening her. However the event can only be done once a week and while the duration is just enough to get the medals needed, if you're unlucky enough to get killed (which isn't that hard to lose as you're forced to run the PHY Butoden Goku as your friend leader), said rewards will be permanently missable. This is even worse in the Global server where the duration of the campaign isn't enough to get the medals needed before it goes away so if you're not lucky enough to get a ? Panel which gives 15 Medals per run, then kiss those 3 Stones and 5 Elder Kais goodbye.
    • All of Ultimate Red Zone [Dismal Future Edition] suffers from this, with many accusing those stages of not being properly playtested due to the insane levels of luck required to complete even the earlier stages, due to the enemies hitting way too hard way too early and being Damage Sponge Bosses to absurd degrees. The worst of these is the final stage against Fusion Zamasu, due to him being able to attack all of your units as early as his first attack, before any of your team is able to properly build up their stats, leading to a massive case of Early Game Hell where 99% of all Turn 1's end with a game over. This feeling is further solidified due to later challenge stages being way more balanced so that many other units are capable of completing them, which just further proved how much of an outlier this edition of Red Zone is in terms of difficulty.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Starting from the 2022 Worldwide Celebration, LRs released in Carnivals are now exclusive to that banner and purchasing them requires the newly-introduced Carnival coins as opposed to the Legendary Summon coins previously. This change is criticized by many players, especially on the lower-end of the spending spectrum as it renders their Yellow coins to be virtually pointless as they're forced to summon on the banners not only for the chance to pull them but to also accumulate them in the first place when previously, a player that has accumulated at least 500 coins can simply wait for the unit to be available in the next Legendary Summon to purchase any LR of their desire but now, they must spend at least 2,500 stones within a relatively short span of time if they want to buy the Carnival LR after they reappear. To add further insult to injury, you can't even exchange any unusable dupes for coins at their time of release until 6 months later after the 2nd Carnival banner which forces players to unnecesarily hoard units in their box until they're finally able to throw them away.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • LR Majin Vegeta could've been a good card had he not been an Extreme-type. (Mostly because his card links mostly resonates with the other Saiyans, just about all of them Super-types.). Not helping was the fact that he had no means of raising his SA to level 20 without breaking your bank, hoping to get numerous dupes of [A Warrior Obsessed] Majin Vegeta or using 19 hard-earned Elder Kais to max him out. (SSJ Goku and SSJ3 Goku had An Epic Showdown, Androids and Hercule could be obtainable from Friend Summons, Frieza, Broly, Goku Black, and Vegito had their drop cards from their Dokkan Events, Trunks, Mighty Mask, Piccolo, and Tien had strike events, and SSJ Gohan at least had Galactic Crisis to fall back on).
    • Zig-Zagged with characters with the "Shattering The Limit" link (gained when a character awakens to TUR with medals that are not obtained from Dokkan Events). At it's best, its seen as an okay link that can help out on cards who starve for Ki (like [Golden Fist] SSJ3 Goku). At its worst, it's a wasted link slot given to characters who could've benefited from the extra 20% ATK that Fierce Battle supplies ([Legend Reborn] SSJG Goku seems to be the biggest example of this) or because it's yet another Ki link given to a card that can sustain Ki for themselves ([Earth-Protecting Flash] Super Saiyan 2 Gohan (Youth) is the biggest contender for this, even more jarring since he gains additional Ki with each Ki Sphere).
    • When the Lord Slug story event was released, many was disappointed that the developers never made a False Super Saiyan card for Goku, instead releasing another Kaioken Goku based off his Heroic Second Wind at the end of the movie. This is seen as odd considering Dokkan's tendency to add rather unknown characters and transformations to the roster such as Candy Vegito, Mighty Mask, Hyper Metal-Rilldo and Super Buu's Piccolo Absorption.
    • Out of all the characters in the Universe 6 lineup, many has gone and agreed that Hit is the biggest source of wasted potential in the category. In the anime proper, Hit could use his Time Skip to casually evade and counter attacks, can target enemy weak points with deadly accuracy, and can improve upon his abilities on the fly as the battle rages on. Yet in this game, Hit gets a static damage buffing passive, a chance to stun and... that's it. No Hit card in the game has any ATK/DEF build up mechanics, hard-coded dodges, counters or unconditional critical hits. And his stun abilities are borderline worthless as most modern events has bosses gain immunity to stuns as early as the first phase. To really drive the nail in further, it's Caulifla that gets all of the built-in dodge/counter abilities, further fueling the Broken Base regarding the U6 Saiyans.
    • Kid Buu is the final villain of the Dragon Ball Z anime and even though he isn't the strongest Buu, his wild feral nature and unpredictable personality made him among the most popular Z villains. Yet when the Worldwide Release Celebration was released as the finale of the Majin Buu Saga Dokkan Fest units, rather than having an LR Dual Dokkan Festival with Super Spirit Bomb Goku, they made Super Vegito and Buuhan representing the face of the celebration despite the fact that the fight is only at the climax of the story unlike the previous Android/Cell Saga Celebration where Gohan and Cell were the proper DDF units. To add further insult to injury, Kid Buu isn't represented in the celebration in any way; no Summonable LR (with SS2 Angel Vegeta being chosen as the Legendary Summon LR), no Free-to-play card, not even any semblance of a new art and there wasn't even a Raid event against him. As a result, the celebration largely felt barren & incomplete and didn't really felt conclusive. All this combined with the lack of any Extreme Z-Battle and the general lack of content caused players to consider this celebration the worst major campaign of all time.
    • For years, people have been clamoring for Dokkan Fest units dedicated to the climactic battle of the Saiyan Saga between Goku and Vegeta, as that fight holds massive significance within the entirety of Dragon Ball's mythos and is still held up by many as one of the best fights in DB History. Then came part 2 of the 7th anniversary, and for some reason, the developers decided to delegate the Kaioken Goku vs Great Ape Vegeta cards as Yellow Coin LRs, ensuring that they will be outclassed by the next Dokkan Fest Exclusive, with many questioning how Garlic Jr. Saga Gohan and Pikkon of all people were able to get a Dokkan Event, but not the more iconic Saiyan Saga Goku vs Vegeta.
    • Any F2P character that gets their Extreme Z-Awakening day-1 is doomed to fall into this no matter what, as it's seen as artificially inflating content for celebrations, wasting the potential they could have had the developers choose to hold back on it for a bit longer, makes their base stats and skills incredibly baren and shows that they lacked faith on the unit succeeding on its own merits without the need of an external boost. This also means that they become outclassed faster than any other F2P unit, since they can't obtain any additional buffs following their pre-mature EZA. And then you have [Dawn of Darkest Justice] Zamasu (Goku), the first F2P LR EZA of his kind, who was pretty much screwed no matter what due to how wonky his Passive worked and the fact that his Day 1 EZA did nothing to fix it.
    • When the final part of the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero campaign was announced, fans were extremely excited to see a set of new LR Gohan and Piccolo units, which had heavily showed off Beast Gohan and Orange Piccolo in their LR Art animations. Come the official announcement of both characters abilities, and while Piccolo got to have Orange Piccolo as a very powerful giant form mechanic... Beast Gohan was restricted to Ultimate Gohan's Active Skill, much to the dismayed outcry of numerous fans that wanted to see a full-blown Beast Gohan unit or at least a transformation for the form.
    • Villains in general don't really have a good track record of having any representation at all outside of Frieza and Cooler (mostly due to heroic Saiyans being more profitable in general), and those that do get either a Dokkan Fest Exclusive or an LR card usually age out the fastest due to their lack of synergy with other units and their passives not being able to pick up the slack. These feelings are only solidified considering that not only does the "GT Bosses" and "Inhuman Deeds" categories still don't have proper leaders, but the Part 2 LRs for the 8th Anniversary are Saiyan Saga Gohan and another Goku based on the first Dragon Ball Z Kai opening, with even the Japanese userbase wondering where the hell Omega Shenron and Kid Buu are supposed to be.
    • [Dawn of an Ideal World] Fusion Zamasu retroactively became this, but due to a very bad instance of a Scrappy Mechanic rearing its ugly head rather than the more traditional Condemned by History route. He's an extremely powerful heavy hitter that can also change Ki Orbs to better suit his attack needs while also taking insane amount of punishment while healing back any health lost. There's just one problem: He shares the same character name as the Half-Corrupted unit [Infinite Sanctuary] Fusion Zamasu, meaning despite how perfect they're made for each other, they'll never be able to link up due to the developers refusing to acknowledge Half-Corrupted Fusion Zamasu as its own individual form despite Legends, Xenoverse 2, Heroes and The Breakers having no qualms with recognizing that they're two separate characters. This started an (unfortunately unsuccessful) movement online with many demanding that [Infinite Sanctuary] (and by extension, [Wrath of the Absolute God] and the final form of [True Power of a God]) have his character name be changed to Half-Corrupted Fusion Zamasu, which would not only fix the linking issue but make him more canonically accurate to the source material.
  • Underused Game Mechanic:
    • Super Attacks tend to differentiate on whether or not their attack is Ki-based or not as shown in the energy symbol next to their name. Unfortunately, this only plays a factor against Androids that either block or absorb energy such as Super #17, Android #19, Dr. Gero and Android #17, none of which can conceivably threaten the player in any of the hard events.
    • A few select old characters have the ability to survive K.O. attacks when certain conditions are met. This allows them to withstand enemies that are capable of dealing devasting Super Attacks such as Full Power Frieza or Super Saiyan Trunks. However this does not prevent the next attack from knocking the player out and in later events, the enemy attacks so frequently that it becomes virtually useless. This mechanic was eventually phased out around Year 4 and replaced by Year 6 with the much more viable Revival skills, at the cost of only being able to use them once per stage.
    • [Ally of Love and Friendship] Videl has the unique passive where she can dodge the enemy before she attacks which makes her evasion better than the intended "chance to evade as the first attacker in a turn" because the latter's evasion only works after attacking so if the enemy attacks first, they won't be able to evade and render them defenseless against them. Yet she's the only unit with such passive with every subsequent unit released after her continue having the "evade as the 1st attacker" part of their passive, making it almost useless particularly due to the fact that most of the units with said passive gains additional boosts each time they evade.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • The Dr. Slump characters in the Global run, mostly because of rights problems.
    • While it has been joked about in the community, no one expected Bandai Namco to release an actual Candy Vegito card.
    • LR Vegito after months of waiting after the LR Election.
    • While it would be no surprise that the Super incarnation of Broly would make an appearance sooner or later, the fact that he would be Simulcasted to Global servers caught many by surprise.
    • Ladies and gentlemen, Monaka Beerus.
    • A recent update on Japan also brought along assets for Black Smoke Shenron, fueling the fan's speculations that the 4th anniversary will be GT themed.
    • The fact that Bee Pan (a drop character from a weekly Rank EXP event) will become an LR during the 4th anniversary.
    • While Dokkan does have some What If? characters of their own (such as Saiyaman Kid Trunks), they were still pretty reasonable even by Dragon Ball standards. Cue the Flying Pigs as Dokkan Battle announced a Pan & Grandpa Gohan card.
    • Paikuhan, a relatively obscure character not only being a Dokkan Festival unit but also serving as the Dual Dokkan Fest counterpart of Janemba rather than the expected Super Gogeta (albeit he does appear during the former's Unit Super Attack).
    • For Tanabata 2022, not many expected an LR unit for Vegeta and Trunks during the Future Trunks Saga to be the unit, particularly from the brief moment of their Father-Son Galick Gun. Similarly to how Dragon Ball Legends had a Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken Goku specifically from the time he got clobbered by Jiren for an Ultra rarity unit, people were quite surprised they picked the moment that, while a cool setpiece, didn't matter in the longrun in the fight with Zamasu and immediately got overshadowed by Goku. And many more were pleasantly surrpised when it turned out they 200% lead a new category, Bond of Parent and Child, which happens to be one of the biggest categories in the game.
    • While a new lead for the DB Saga team has been long expected, not many were expecting for it to be another Kid Goku... But what even fewer were expecting was for the Kid Goku to be the one from Dragon Ball: The Path to Power considering how the film is rather niche to the Dragon Ball fanbase outside of Goku's iconic Kamehameha from the film's finale.
    • Players have been expecting (or joking) that resident Memetic Loser Yamcha to eventually get a Dokkan Festival unit, even if it was a joke unit, as he eventually got one in November 2022. What fans weren't expecting was for Yajirobe, a DB era character who while having some heavy moments in Z didn't get talked about much by fans, to be a banner unit alongside Yamcha.
    • With the 2023 WWC being Future-themed, no one was surprised when a new Corrupted Fusion Zamasu was announced as one of the LRs. What people were surprised to see was his post-mortem Infinite Zamasu form being playable (which is something not even Dragon Ball Heroes has done), with many basking in the ridiculousness that Dokkan Battle will allow players to play as the fucking sky before Beast Gohan.
  • Vindicated by History:
    • When Super 17 came out as the Extreme-AGL lead, not many people gave him the time of day let alone run him, thanks to his team having a distinct lack of hard hitters or supports, but as newer units such as [Explosive Evolution] Turles and older units got Dokkan Awakenings, Extreme-AGL is starting to make a comeback, being much more variable than before.
    • When [The True Value of Perfect Form] Cell (Perfect Form) was released, he was derided as the worst Dokkan Fest LR in the game due to his incredibly restrictive conditions, low damage output and terrible links. However, as more difficult events have been released, players slowly began to reconsider their opinions on the unit as his tremendous DEF boost and 1-time recovery in a pinch made Cell absolutely excel in that mode as the enemy's super attacks enables the player to consistently whittle themselves down to made Cell transform. The update to links and the leveling system boosted his viability even further as the most common links that can be activated, Kamehameha and Legendary Power now have percentage boosts which enables Cell to now hit as hard as an LR unit. Nowadays, Cell rank among the best units in the game owing to his tremendous durability that enabled him to survive continues Super Attacks even on the hardest modes.
  • Win Back the Crowd: After the Broken Base that resulted from the 2nd Year of the game's life, the third year saw a true praise by fans with a much more balanced Power Creep with the introductions of categories allowing for creative team buildings and bringing back relevance to older cards, more interesting characters with stylish Super Attack animations and the Transformation Mechanic allowing for multiple characters in one card. Also helping is the fact that all Dragon Stone banners following SSBE Vegeta (UI Goku/Jiren in the Global release) are now Guaranteed SSR, along with more boisterous celebrations that provides more Dragon Stones, Hercule Statues and Potential Orbs. The Boss Rush, Super Battle Roads and Extreme Z-Battle modes also help with putting people's units to the test.
