Crossovers
  • Amazing Fantasy: Izuku and Sero quickly strike up a friendship over their shared desire to attend U.A. and usage of Building Swinging to get around when they meet on Bepsi Tower.
  • In the Battlestar Galactica (2003)/Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles crossover "An Angel With No Fate", one reason that the teenage John Connor and Kara Thrace form such a strong bond is that they each consider Cameron a person rather than judge her as a machine, Kara recalling how Cameron actually saved her life when she was initially created in the future as proof that Cameron can act beyond her programming.
  • Avengers: Infinite Wars:
    • Invoked when the Guardians of the Galaxy and their allies learn of Vision's connection to Ultron, Gamora subtly reminding Rocket that he trusts her despite her history with Thanos as a means of convincing him to trust Vision in turn.
    • The heroes having a connection to Ultron is also referenced due to Wanda and Pietro's powers also being attributed to the Mind Stone; since Ultron was created from the same source, the Avengers keep the Maximoff twins out of potential stealth missions against Ultron in case he can sense their power based on that connection.
  • Throughout Avengers of the Ring and its sequels, various characters bond over small but significant things they share, ranging from Clint Barton obviously bonding with Legolas and Bard (the great-grandson of the bowman who killed Smaug) due to their status as archers, to Scott Lang encouraging Beorn to join the opposition against Thanos by mentioning how Cassie inspires Scott to be a hero, reminding Beorn of his own daughter.
  • Luna and Emerald in Chapter 42 of BlazBlue Alternative: Remnant form a bond with each other thanks to their past lives as thieves who were forced to do whatever it took to survive.
  • The Bridge (MLP) has this happen all the time, often between the two casts.
    • Princess Luna and Godzilla Junior are both dutiful protectors of their respective realms and had a sad ending to their relationship with their father figures. note
    • Both Aria Blaze and Monster X are homesick in a way. Aria is physically barred from her home in the sea due to being in the Equestria Girls world and in a human body. X meanwhile is missing his metaphorical home because he lost all his memories of it.
  • Fantasy of Utter Ridiculousness: This is what helps Reisen, who normally doesn't like humans, form a friendship with Kiva: both of them were soldiers with their respective factions that weren't serving at present, both of them daily had to put up with the whimsical actions of their associates, and they both had to adjust to entirely new circumstances.
  • The First Halfa: Egon Spengler is contacted by the Guys in White to examine an ectoplasmic sample retrieved from the Ghost-Boy of Amity Park, as they wish to determine if they are dealing with a human-turned-ghost based on Egon's own experience of such a transformation ("Egon's Ghost"). While Egon is able to confirm that this is the case, he hides his discovery from the GiW as he recognises that they just want to catch the Ghost-Boy while he's human and vulnerable, whereas Egon can now see that the Ghost-Boy is a teen hero defending his town whose only mistakes are because he's still learning what he's capable of. When Egon shares this information with the other Ghostbusters, they all agree to keep it secret and stay out of Amity Park to stop the GiW finding their target, reflecting that the Ghost-Boy is the only new generation ghost hunter they genuinely respect as he's doing it for the right reasons rather than to, for example, sadistically experiment on the ghosts he defeats.
  • God of War: Chains of the Heart: One of the major things Kratos and Sora bond over is their shared Blood Knight natures. Both really enjoy fighting powerful opponents, and they have protracted, engaging conversations (especially notable since Kratos isn't much of a talker even with the people he's friends with) on the enemies they've fought and the best ways to kill them.
  • Heroes of the New World; Izuku and Yamato bond over their Hero Worship tendencies for their respective idols All Might and Kozuki Oden, sharing stories with one another about their heroes' adventures and achievements.
  • "Heroes" Series;

    • Freya Mikaelson and Erik Lensherr end up having one with each other, which leads to both of them ending up in a relationship, and later happily living together.
  • I'm Nobody: Joker and Della Duck form a friendship based on how they're both Ace Pilots with a love of adventure who are both disabled (Joker has Osteogenesis Imperfecta while Della is missing a leg). Joker even says that he should learn from her example.
  • Infinity Train: Blossoming Trail: The Red Lotus Trio (Chloe, Atticus and Lexi) end up bonding cause they have similar connections.
    • They're all into stories. Atticus recites tales from his kingdom and reads classic novels, Chloe has a knack for writing macabre tales and Lexi himself is a book that records the accounts of cars within the train.
    • They're all excited to explore the train for different reasons: Atticus wants another adventure, Chloe is journeying to find herself, and Lexi wants to explore the other cars and hopefully have a chance to get revenge on Grace and Simon (who buried him alive for years).
    • The three are unable to forgive someone in their pasts: Chloe can't forgive her father or Goh for favoring Pokémon over her, Atticus will not let Amelia go so easily for the torment she unleashed as the Conductor, and Lexi wants nothing more than to hurt Grace and Simon.

  • Jaune Arc, Lord of Hunger: During the Beacon Dance, Jaune and Weiss bond over having Parental Issues and rebelling against their parents. Jaune's parents were extremely overbearing and overprotective, while Weiss's father was distant and emotionally abusive. This led both to strike out on their own and come to Beacon.
Jaune: (raises glass) To crazy parents?
Weiss: (toasts) To striking out on our own.
  • The Lightning Strike: After learning from Thor that wizards such as Harry were apparently initially empowered by the Reality Stone/Aether, other Avengers compare it to how Pietro and Wanda's powers come from the Mind Stone, and Maria Hill mentions Carol Danvers as another example of a human being empowered by an Infinity Stone.
  • In the Power Rangers in Space/Mighty Ducks: The Animated Series crossover "Lost and Found", Wildwing swiftly bonds with Andros when he observes Andros’s reaction to the idea of Karone being in danger and compares it to his own response if anything threatens Nosedive.

  • PRT Threat Assessment: Batman invokes the trope. Celestia (a stranger to the group) is having a Heroic BSoD, so he tells Wonder Woman to go comfort her. Why Wonder Woman specifically?
Batman: Because you and she are both millennium-old Greek-themed princesses with penchants for golden jewelry. Plenty of common ground.

  • Shadows over Meridian:

The Chess Club members get upset when she does too well during her introductory matches; the Math Club members ignore her efforts to get involved in their conversations; and the Creatures & Caverns Club is in the middle of a three-month campaign, and don't really want her around as an audience.

Eiko has actually realized that Yui is a product of some Dark Side experiment (though it's pretty clear she doesn't know any of the details), and commiserates over some of the physical and mental side effects such things cause. During the attack on the mall, it turns out Eiko was a Dark Side assassin, and she and Yui take down the assailants without too much trouble. After, Yui asks Eiko why their flatmates were acting strange (that is, not being disturbingly calm in a life-threatening situation), the first time she asked anyone for explicit help.

Barry initially assumes that he has “reset” reality like he did originally, but later learns that Kara Zor-El also remembers the events of that timeline, the two swiftly reaffirming their previous alliance and helping the other face their losses while acknowledging their role as heroes.

Dragon Age

  • Cassandra and the Inquisitor are able to eventually become friends in Beyond Heroes: Of Sunshine and Red Lyrium in part because of this trope. They have something particularly unpleasant in common; they both know what it's like to lose their brothers.
  • In the AU fanfic All This Venatori Nonsense, Inquisitor Trevelyan tries to invoke this by suggesting he and a Venatori Dorian Pavus can be civil over their mutual hatred of red lyrium. Dorian retorts that "a distrust of blighted lyrium and breathing do not friends make".

Fire Emblem

Fullmetal Alchemist

The Ghost and Molly McGee

  • Teachers Outside of the Classroom: The reason Libby asked Mrs. Roop for advice on how to ask Molly out was because the latter is an open lesbian who's happily married and has lots of personal experience with queer issues. This makes her one of the few people who knows Libby is gay.

Harry Potter

  • Daphne Greengrass and the Boy Who Lived;
    • After her first lesson with Lupin reveals Daphne’s fear of being rejected by her friends, Lupin asks her to stay behind and offer his own insights into that fear, although he avoids directly discussing his werewolf status at this point.
    • During Christmas at the Burrow over her sixth year, Daphne helps Fleur bond with Ginny by observing how Fleur's issues being judged as a Veela instead of her own skills (and how Bill was the first to see her as a person) are similar to her own troubles being judged as a Slytherin rather than as an individual.

Hetalia: Axis Powers

  • Gankona, Unnachgiebig, Unità: Italy and Japan have this. Despite having vastly different personalities, they both liked literature, anime, manga, fencing, food, and cats. They both even cosplayed as Light Yagami and Teru Mikami respectively from Death Note. To say Germany wasn't pleased with this would be a massive understatement.

Invader Zim

  • Ruby Pair: Dib feels a bond with Lard Nar when they meet in "Frosting the 13th" and the latter starts ranting about how he was the only one who saw Invader Larb as the threat that he was, much like Dib's situation with Zim.

The Legend of Zelda

Marvel Cinematic Universe

  • 14, 000, 606 opens with Peter Parker performing the Snap to kill Thanos rather than Tony Stark. After Peter survives through urgent medical treatment at Wakanda (albeit at the cost of his left arm and eye, as well as heavy scarring), Thor and Hulk each observe that they share something significant with Peter; he and Thor are the two who vanquished Thanos, and Peter and Hulk each used the Infinity Stones. As an acknowledgement of their bond, Thor gives Peter the cybernetic eye he received from Rocket to replace Peter's lost eye.
  • Because I Knew You opens with Wanda Maximoff coming to New York to investigate the spell compelling the world to forget Peter Parker. While Peter assumes that "Lizzie" doesn't remember him any more than the rest of the world, the two soon find themselves bonding over how they lost everyone else in their lives after the Snap and literally nobody else was there for them when things went wrong. They also discreetly acknowledge that they might have been part of the reason they lost contact with the other Avengers, as they were each so focused on their bonds with Tony and the Vision respectively that they didn’t spend as much time with the rest of the team.
  • A Far, Far Better Thing I Do” depicts an alternate set of events post-Avengers: Endgame, with a key difference being that the other Avengers get involved in Peter Parker’s fight with the displaced villains in the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. After Norman Osborn has been put back in control of himself, Bucky Barnes observes to Osborn that he has experience of being a super-soldier with no control of himself, advising Osborn to find something to focus on that’s changed in a good way from how things were before his accident. On a more humorous note, when DUM-E enters the room, Octavius’s arms basically decide to regard the other robot as “their stupid little cousin” even though they were created by completely independent scientists.

Marvel Universe

  • "Caught in her Web" is essentially a Spider-Gwen AU where Peter Parker became Gwen's tech expert and lover rather than mutating himself into the Lizard. After he and Gwen begin a physical relationship, Peter forms an unexpected bond with Doctor Jane Foster when exploring options on how to cope with being the lover of a physically enhanced hero, such as how Gwen and Thor would destroy most regular beds considering their great strength.

Miraculous Ladybug

My Hero Academia

  • 1-X: Izuku and Pony quickly hit it off once Izuku reveals he can not only understand Pony, but speak English himself, the two regularly having entire conversations in English while others can only guess what they're talking about. Add on the two of them finding common ground in being massive hero nerds and Pony standing up to Bakugo for Izuku's sake, the two quickly become close, with Izuku even considering Pony his new best friend.
  • In From Muddy Waters, Todoroki takes an interest in Izuku after seeing his discomfort with his Quirk despite his clear skill with it. He began wondering if Izuku was like him: a Laser-Guided Tyke-Bomb raised by his Vicariously Ambitious father. Because of this, he begins trying to get closer to Izuku, sitting with him at lunch, offering him a seat on the bus, and working with him in a group. Izuku is utterly ashamed when he realizes this, as his father never beat him- only emotionally manipulated into accepting more and more Quirks. During their fight at the Sports Festival, Izuku firmly tells Todoroki to not let his father's ambitions control him. Unlike in canon, Todoroki is so shaken by this that he forfeits the match instead of using his fire powers.
  • The Scorpion Jar:
    • All of the allies Izuku gathers while enacting his plan to bring Aldera Middle School down from the inside were also being bullied. By the time the school is closed down, he's come to consider them to be actual friends.
    • Kagami Atsuko, the reporter who winds up interviewing Izuku, quickly connects with him due to the fact that her own daughter is Quirkless.

Naruto

  • Androgyninja's A Drop of Poison:
    • Kabuto tries to forge a connection with Sakura by commenting that "us civilian-borns gotta stick together". This backfires; hearing that from a practical stranger only serves to raise her hackles and her guard.
    • After watching Sakura's match with Ino, Gai notes to himself that a common thread runs between her, Tenten, and himself: all three of them have been severely underestimated and scrutinized due to their humble backgrounds and lack of fancy clan jutsus. He's also acutely familiar with how it feels to be rejected and isolated due to not fitting the mold, and worries that Sakura might face the same judgement after how she took down a clan heiress.
    • Sakura and Tenten immediately bond over how both feel as though they're the Only Sane Members of their respective genin teams.
  • Ffreire's NaruFox AU: Played for Laughs when Team Seven meets Zabuza. While Kakashi already knows him as a mercenary, his genin team sees how he shares their teacher's distinctive fashion sense and leaps to the conclusion that they're brothers. Zabuza is more than happy to roll with it and claim the kids as his nephews and niece, while Kakashi protests that none of them are related.
  • Five Petals:
    • Kakashi tries to get Sasuke to see their similarities by telling him about how he used to be "a prideful little jerk who never felt good enough, but hated when other people were better than me" when he was his age.
    • After the preliminary matches, Sasuke and Lee find themselves bonding over how both of them received crippling injuries during their fights, though they play a rather furious round of Misery Poker first.
  • Obito-Sensei: Tenten brings this up to Sakura as to why the two have grown so close, even outside of the former training the latter in kenjutsu. Both of them were placed on teams with exceptional teammates (Sakura with Naruto and Sasuke and Tenten with Lee and Neji), which pushed both of them to get stronger and not fall behind.
  • OrangeLemon's Sannin Swap:
    • When asking Tsunade to accept him as her apprentice, Sasuke points out that both of them come from the two founding clans of Konohagakure, the Senju and the Uchiha.
    • Along similar lines, it's hinted that Sakura's pitch strikes a chord with Jiraiya; as she admits that she doesn't have a clan or any special jutsus, and sees herself as the weakest member of her team, he silently flashes back to when his team was just starting out.
    • Tsunade later puts a darker spin on Sasuke's original pitch while complaining about how the two of them are the last remnants of their respective clans, noting that while they're seemingly venerated for that status, they don't have much in the way of actual political power.
    • Naruto convinces Killer Bee to join his cause by appealing to how both of them are jinchuuriki, and were isolated and mistreated by their respective villages as a result.
    • In Part Seven, Kushina compares their own life to Naruto, noting how she grew up as an outsider and was restricted in ways that her peers weren't.
  • Son of the Sannin: During her wedding, Kurenai mentions that part of the reason why she and Asuma bonded so easily is because both of them had issues with their fathers (hers disapproved of her becoming a ninja and his was always absent due to all his various responsibilities).
  • your move, instigator (draw your weapon and hold your tongue):
    • When Tenten joins their squad, Sakura offers her a copy of Tale of the Utterly Gutsy Ninja, calling it 'the unofficial book of Team 14' and encouraging her to read it so they have something in common.
    • After bumping into Kakashi, Sakura notices how they both like to read and walk at the same time. Trying to get to know him better, she asks if Icha Icha is just as good as her favorite book, and if he recommends it.

They later go to see other bands like Alien Open Autopsy and Coprolite.

Persona Franchise

  • Hours 'Verse: Akechi bonds with Ken over their similarities, being members of the Justice Arcana who threw away a good portion of their lives seeking revenge against the men responsible for the deaths of their mothers.
  • In the Role Swap AU Second Chance, Ryuji initially doesn't get along with the Metaverse bird Chihaya, just like with Morgana in canon. That is until he learns her wish is to become human and not stuck in her current body, something that Ryuji, as a trans boy, can relate to.
