The Mew Mews

    In General
  • Animal-Motif Team: All the male Mews have the DNA of an endangered animal species:
    • Aoi Shibuya — Iriomote cat
    • Shizuka Yoyogi — Amazon river dolphin
    • Ryusei Kanda — Komodo dragon
    • Ayato Roppongi — Red-and-blue lory
    • Taichi Hiroo — Amur leopard
  • Armed Females, Unarmed Males: A meta example. Each female Mew from the original series wielded an individual weapon, but the male Mews from this series fight without weapons.
  • Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: All the Mews are very beautiful boys and wear outfits that expose their abdomen when transformed.
  • The Chosen Many: The DNA of the endangered animals chose each of the Mewsto become the warrior who fight for the Earth.
  • Color-Coded Characters:
    • Aoi Shibuya - Black
    • Shizuka Yoyogi - Pink
    • Ryusei Kanda - Gold
    • Ayato Roppongi - Red
    • Taichi Hiroo - Light blue
  • Distinctive Appearances: Unlike their mainline counterparts, these Mews don't have thematically/aesthetically similar transformation outfits. They have a belly window, but that's where the shared design elements end.
  • Five Temperament Ensemble: The insecure and brooding Aoi is Melancholic, the haughty and abrasive Yoyogi is Choleric, the energetic and cheerful Kanda is Sanguine, the cool and narcissistic Roppongi is Phlegmatic, and the timid and hypersensitive Hiroo is Supine.
  • In the Name of the Moon: Whenever they transform and join the fight, they say some drama lines with "be at your service" at the end.
  • Location Theme Naming: All the male Mews are named after train stations in Tokyo.

    Aoi Shibuya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shibuya_aoi.png

The male protagonist and the first Mew. He is infused with the DNA of the Iriomote cat.

  • Alien Catnip: Due to his feline genes, he gets high on silver vine.
  • Cat Boy: Because of his Iriomote cat genes, he grows cat ears and a tail.
  • Classical Anti-Hero: At the start, Aoi has low self-esteem because he considers being beautiful is his only strong point and doesn't think he's fit to be a cat superhero. Thanks to Anzu, he gradually becomes more confident and starts acting like a proper hero.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: In the final battle, Aoi is killed by Dark Blue while protecting Anzu and dies in Anzu's arms. He does get resurrected by Mew Aqua almost immediately.
  • Distaff Counterpart: He's the male counterpart to Ichigo Momomiya. Much like Ichigo, Aoi is the first Mew and has the DNA of the Iriomote cat. He also sprouts ears when he gets flustered around his love interest, just like it happened to Ichigo.
  • Gratuitous Spanish: Aoi randomly says Spanish phrases when transformed, most commonly his Catchphrase "Adios Amigo".
  • Grew a Spine: He becomes more assertive and confident after he starts dating Anzu.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: At the start, he has zero self-confidence and thinks there's nothing good about himself despite the amazing things he can do as a Mew. He grows out of it thanks to Anzu helping him build more self-esteem.
  • Hide Your Otherness: He often wears a hood to hide his cat ears whenever these come out.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: He gets impaled by Dark Blue's sword in the final volume.
  • One Head Taller: He's considerably taller than Anzu, his love interest.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: He's the more serious and introverted Savvy Guy to Anzu's cheerful and optimistic Energetic Girl.
  • School Idol: He's the Sakurazaka High School's most handsome guy. Even students of other schools know him as if he was a celebrity.
  • Sprouting Ears: His cat ears pop up whenever he gets flustered, usually because of his crush Anzu.
  • Super-Hearing: He has very good hearing. Anzu thinks it's because a cat's sense of hearing is ten times greater than a human's.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: He's a Mew with gold eyes.
  • Taking the Bullet: In the final battle, he shields Anzu from Dark Blue's sword with his own body. He still survives thanks to Dark Blue releasing the Mew Aqua.

    Shizuka Yoyogi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yoyogi_shizuka.png

The second Mew. A smart guy with glasses who attends a super-prestigious elite school. He is infused with the DNA of the Amazon river dolphin.

  • Academic Athlete: He is the top student of the Kaikoma Academy and the star of the swimming club.
  • Book Smart: He got the top scores nationwide on the mock exam.
  • Composite Character: He combines character traits of Minto Aizawa and Retasu Midorikawa. Like Minto, Yoyogi is the second Mew and has a Vitriolic Best Buds dynamic with the half-cat protagonist. Like Retasu, Yoyogi gets his Mew powers from an aquatic mammal and wears glasses.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He never misses the chance to make snarky remarks at his teammates' quirks.
  • Idiot Hair: Inverted. Yoyogi has an ahoge sticking out on top of his head, but is actually the smartest Mew.
  • Insufferable Genius: He knows he's way smarter than everyone in his team and often looks down on others as he thinks they're morons compared to him.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's arrogant and frequently insults his teammates, particularly Aoi, but he's still a heroic person at heart.
  • The Lancer: He's the second Mew to appear and his arrogant, aloof personality often serves as a Foil to Aoi's self-deprecating, insecure personality.
  • Logical Weakness: His dolphin DNA makes him weak when the Mews are trapped in an artificial desert.
  • Making a Splash: As a Mew, he can generate water and use it in his attacks.
  • Only Sane Man: He's the most coolheaded and down-to-earth out of the Mews.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Inverted. Yoyogi has rose-colored hair, despite being the most jerkish of the Mews.
  • Showgirl Skirt: A male example. When transformed, Yoyogi wears a skirt shaped like a dolphin tail, which only covers the back of his legs.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: He's the only Mew who wears glasses and also, the smartest member of the team.
  • Specs of Awesome: He's a water-controlling superhero and wears glasses even during battle.
  • Sultry Bangs: He almost always has his long bangs covering his right eye, enhancing his sultry looks.
  • Super Swimming Skills: He was already good at swimming even before becoming a Mew. After getting infused with dolphin DNA, he accidentally sets a new national record during swimming club.
  • Tsundere: Harsh type. He's very haughty and rude, often making fun of Aoi. He still cares about him, to the point of instigating Homoerotic Subtext at times.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Aoi. Yoyogi insults and makes fun of his cat teammate all the time, yet they grow to trust and care for each other over the series.

    Ryusei Kanda
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kanda_ryuusei.png

The third Mew. A flashy, cheerful festival guy. He is infused with the DNA of the Komodo dragon.

  • Chained by Fashion: His Mew outfit has chains wrapped around his waist.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: He's a heroic, friendly, and helpful guy with blond hair.

  • Nice Guy: He's the most easygoing and friendliest of the Mew boys.
  • The Nose Knows: He can smell a meal from miles away.
  • Super-Strength: His main Mew power is superhuman strength. He can demolish giant Chimera Anima with one punch.

    Ayato Roppongi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/roppongi_ayato.png

The fourth Mew. An overly narcissistic actor and self-proclaimed "once-in-4.6 billion-years super star". He calls his fangirls "honeys" and pursues his own aesthetic no matter the time. He is infused with the DNA of the red-and-blue lory.

  • Badass Longcoat: His Mew outfit has a stylish red longcoat.
  • Classy Cravat: His Mew outfit includes an elegant cravat.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He's always off in his own little world.
  • Composite Character: Like Zakuro Fujiwara, Roppongi is a celebrity and has a cool personality, but he also has elements of Minto Aizawa because he's the bird Mew of the team and lives in a Big Fancy House.
  • Distracted by My Own Sexy: The first time he transforms, he completely ignores the dog Chimera Anima and the other Mews at the scene because he's too busy staring at a mirror to admire his new flashy outfit.
  • Incoming Ham: Whenever he makes an entrance, he does it with style. As expected from an actor.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's an egocentric and vain narcissist, but still a good guy. He's shown to care about his teammates and Anzu in his own way.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He's a gorgeous young actor with flowing hair going past his waist.
  • Narcissist: His profile describes him as the number one in the world at loving himself.
  • Petal Power: He can create whirlwinds of flower petals.
  • Power Gives You Wings: He grows wings in his second Mew form.
  • Skewed Priorities: When Chai traps the Mews inside a desert dimension, Roppongi's biggest concern is that the intense heat is bad for his skin.

    Taichi Hiroo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hiroo_taichi.png

The fifth Mew. A middle school student who is gentle and timid, but an incredibly fast runner. He is infused with the DNA of the Amur leopard.

  • The Baby of the Bunch: He's the youngest Mew and the older members, especially Aoi and Anzu, tend to look after him.
  • Badass Adorable: He's cute, short, and timid. However, his leopard powers make him one of the strongest Mews in combat.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's the gentlest and meekest of the Mews, but also the most dangerous when he loses control.
  • Boyish Shorts: Hiroo is a middle school student, making him the youngest of the male Mews, and the outfit of his Mew form has a pair of puffy shorts, while the older male Mews wear long pants.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: He gets brainwashed by Chai before he officially joins the Mew team. The other Mews and Anzu make him come back to his senses.
  • Bullied into Depression: Years of cruel bullying left him broken and depressed, which allowed Chai to brainwash him.
  • Bully Magnet: He has been mercilessly bullied since elementary school.
  • Cat Boy: Being infused with leopard genes, he grows spotted leopard ears and a small tail.
  • Cute Oversized Sleeves: His Mew outfit has oversized detached sleeves that emphasize his cuteness.
  • Friendless Background: Because of having been victim of bullying for most of his life, Hiroo couldn't make friends until he joined the Mew team. He greatly treasures hanging out with his teammates and Anzu because they're his first friends.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: His hair covers his right eye, highlighting his meekness.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He's the fastest Mew and has exceptional physical strength as well.
  • Logical Weakness: He's vulnerable to being trapped in a desert environment because the Amur leopard lives in the coldest parts of Russia.
  • Marked Change: A tattoo appears on the right side of his face when his Mew DNA takes him over and transforms him into the "Biological Weapon Mew".
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: His short hair grows to ankle-length when his Superpowered Evil Side takes over.
  • Red Herring: In the last chapters, it's made look like Hiroo's Superpowered Evil Side could be Dark Blue, with even the Three Wisemen believing it. In the final battle, it's revealed Hiroo's evil side is just his Mew powers going awry and Dark Blue's host is Anzu.
  • Shy Blue-Haired Girl: Male example. Because of being bullied, Hiroo is a very shy and withdrawn boy with light blue hair.
  • Sprouting Ears: Like Aoi, Hiroo sprouts cat ears when flustered.
  • Stripperiffic: When he briefly becomes the "Biological Weapon Mew", Hiroo's Mew outfit changes to something much more revealing, with his chest being left bare and his lower half being covered by nothing but Body Paint.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Before the final battle, Hiroo's Mew powers go out of control and give him a new super powered form that makes him act as nothing but a weapon that must eliminate all threats to Earth, mainly Anzu because she's Dark Blue's host.
  • Super-Speed: His main power is running at high speed, since Amur leopards are the fastest land animals in the world.
  • Token Mini-Moe: He's the youngest and shortest Mew.

Allies

  • Animal Lover: Her greatest love are animals, especially rare and endangered species.

  • Chosen Conception Partner: Under Dark Blue's orders, the Three Wisemen plan to force Anzu to have children with them to repopulate the Earth after they kill all of humanity.

  • Damsel in Distress: Towards the end of the manga, she lets Latte kidnap her to stop him from hurting Aoi.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Anzu is Masaya Aoyama's female counterpart in the series. While Anzu isn't a School Idol and is more excitable about her love for animals than Aoyama, she shares the role of the Muggle love interest of the half-cat superhero and the host of the alien god Big Bad.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Her cute nerdy tendencies and enthusiastic love for endangered animals are some of the traits that make others so fond of her.
  • Faux Action Girl: She's stated to be a black belt martial artist, but these skills don't help her much against the aliens and she needs the protection of the Mews to stay safe.

  • The Heart: Her kindness and upbeat spirit make her the emotional backbone to the Mew team.

  • Nice Girl: She's a very sweet, friendly and empathetic girl who always tries to help others.
  • Oblivious to Love: She's very clueless to Aoi's obvious crush on her.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: She's a normal high school student who gets involved in the battles of the Mews against alien invaders.

  • Stock Shoujo Heroine: She's a bright, compassionate, cheerful and somewhat dorky girl who brings out the best in people with her pure feelings.
  • Supporting Protagonist: Anzu is the main POV character, but the story is actually about the Mews.
  • The Team Normal: Anzu isn't a Mew nor has any special powers, but still joins the Mews in their missions even if she can't be of much help in battle.

    Natsume Hinata
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/natsume_hinata.png

Anzu's aunt and the scientist in charge of the Mew Project.

  • Composite Character: She takes the role of both Ryou Shirogane and Keiichiro Akasaka, being the scientist who empowered the Mews and plays Mission Control for the team. While her personality is closer to Keiichiro's, her backstory takes elements of Ryou's; a Teen Genius who lost her family in an accident and took over the Mew Project to honor their memory.
  • Grade Skipper: She skipped grades and graduated from a British university before she turned fifteen.
  • Improbable Age: At fifteen-year-old, she was already a college graduate and genius researcher.

  • Parental Substitute: She has been her niece Anzu's guardian since her parents died.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: She wears glasses and is a prodigal scientist.

  • Exotic Eye Designs: His eyes have bright yellow pupils and dark sclerae.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He doesn't smile and his expression seems locked in a somber frown.
  • Team Dad: His stern and no-nonsense attitude make him come off as a grumpy dad to his more immature teammates. Mocha actually calls Latte out on it when the latter scolds him for making the room dirty while eating.
  • Token Good Teammate: Compared to his teammates, Latte doesn't act malicious towards humans and tries to get Anzu to join his side by appealing to her compassionate personality instead of trying to attack her or mind control her like Mocha and Chai attempt to do.
  • Villainous Crush: He eventually falls in love with Anzu, the love interest of one of the heroes.

  • Not in This for Your Revolution: Latte and Chai follow Dark Blue's orders because they really believe it is the best path to take back Earth for the sake of their race, but Mocha openly admits he doesn't really care about the Earth and only wants to take Anzu for himself.

    Chai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chai_tmmo.png

A man with long black hair. He is the most analytical of the Three Wisemen.

  • Attractive Bent-Gender: Chai can pull off crossdressing really well. In a flashback, Chai caught the eye of people as he walked down the street while wearing a dress and Latte was surprised this pretty "girl" was in fact a pretty guy.
  • Disguised in Drag: In the Wisemen's backstory, Chai disguised himself as a female entertainer to distract a fruit seller and give Mocha the chance to steal some of his fruits.
