Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Revealing himself, the Devil promptly tries to torture Patri to death as a disposable pawn, gloating about all he has done to the world before trying to manifest fully. Gleefully attempting to wipe out the heroes, the Devil proceeds to open a doorway to pure darkness, seeking to consume the human and elven races alike.

  • Scream:
    • The TV Series:
      • Season 1: Piper Shaw duplicates the killing spree of Brandon James, starting by killing Nina and her boyfriend Tyler, and later killing depressed student Rachel, making it look like a suicide. As the accomplice, this Ghostface is personally responsible for killing Audrey's girlfriend Rachael; putting Will in a Death Trap for Emma to trigger, and the torture and murder of Sheriff Hudson—-their own father. In season 2, Ghostface torments both Emma and Audrey for her connection to the first Ghostface; begins a new killing spree by disemboweling Jake with a scythe, before dropping his mangled corpse in front of his girlfriend Brooke; hacks off Branson's hand, burning the stub with an iron, before leaving him to burn to death; kills two cops for getting in their way; kills his other girlfriend Hayley; has both Noah and Zoe Buried Alive while Emma and Audrey struggle to rescue them, even though they had already drowned Zoe; and frames Emma and Audrey with Mayor Maddox's murder. In the finale, upon being exposed, Ghostface shoots his own cousin, whom he had tormented and framed throughout both of their lives. She manipulated Jamal to take the Ghostface mantle to terrorize her supposed friend and his half-brother, outwardly pretending to care about her new friends. As part of their brutal murder spree, Beth personally kills her boyfriend by forcibly overdosing him; has another friend burnt alive in a car; and kills her next boyfriend by sawing through his stomach and groin with a bone saw, watching him bleed out. When Jamal is nearly exposed, Beth has him kidnapped and mortally wounded to not leave loose ends, and when she finally reveals her true motives, she shoots and seemingly kills Marcus before chasing down and trying to kill Liv.

New proposal, from SS Doomtrooper. Credit to Lighty for letting me do this one.

Who's the candidate?

Dr. Ullman, a Mad Scientist making super soldiers for Those Wacky Nazis.

What does he do?

We first meet Ullman as he's showing a new commander Lieutenant Reinhard around the base, expressing clear annoyance that he's being demoted. He shows Reinhard a few dogs he experimented on, which have been turned into ravenous beasts. The commander is intrigued by the experiments, so Ullman requests one of his soldiers. He then turns the soldier into a monster known as the Doomtrooper, which is shown to be an excruciating process.

Next, we're introduced to Captain Jerry Malloy, who has been called in by British intelligence to take out Ullman's operation, revealing that 17 planes have been shot down in the same process. Malloy gathers a team of convincted criminals together to stop Ullman, being shot down in the process. After Reinhard is notified of their survival, Ullman is authorized to sic the Doomtrooper on them, which he does with gusto. Reinhard sends some soldiers to bring the creature back, but Ullman notes that it will kill them all. He, of course, doesn't care, as his goal is to win the war, not pander to a commanding officer he hates.

Soon after that, Malloy and his men run into some French Resistance troops, who tell them about some mpre experiments Ullman did, including on local villagers. None of them came out alive. When he made his monster, he set it on the village, nearly depopulating it. Soon after, Reinhard decides to terminate the Doomtrooper prohect, so Ullman kills him and takes over.

Malloy and his men manage to break into the Nazi base, though many of them die in the process. The survivors are captured, and Ullman reveals that he has several men strapped into devices to make them into Doomtroopers. Mallpy and Private Parker Lewis try to shut the machine down, gunning Ullman down when he tries to stop them. Hoaever, one Doomtrooper is made, and the Mad Doctor orders him to slaughter the entire base, including his subordinates, before expiring.

Heinousness?

Big Bad, sets it. He may have nominal bosses, but has no issue defying them.

Mitigating factors?

Ullman is no cog in the Nazi machine, being exceptionslly giddy at the thought of using his Super-Soldier, and not really expressing any belief in Nazism as a cause. He just wants to win the war, no matter the cost, including to the German people. Nothing else is worth noting.

Verdict?

Also what the hell does this line in pactyas the hunter's entry mean

Learning about the Eagle Bearer's whereabouts in Makedonia, Pactyas would gather all the people he killed to mutilate and hang to display and trick them into attacking the Eagle Bearer; Should the Eagle Bearer refuse to kill them Pactyas would kill them himself.

Are the people alive or are they dead? If the later how are you or Pactyas able to kill them.

Sure to Ullman.

EDIT: [up] Good lord, that is a mess of a sentence [lol] G?

EDIT 2: Looking at the effortpost, I think it should be something like "Learning about the Eagle Bearer's whereabouts in Makedonia, Pactyas would gather all the people he mutilated and killed, displaying the corpses hanging from a tree to trick the innocent villagers into attacking the Eagle Bearer; should the Eagle Bearer refuse to kill said villagers, Pactyas would kill them himself."

I think Manny could count... except he specifically only mutilates his victims AFTER they are dead.

If he did so beforehand? Maybe. Maybe he could count. But as it is?

In a world like Hotline Miami, you can't hold anything back. You need that extra vileness.

The Janitors... eh? Maybe. I guess their motives are hollow enough.

[up] I spoiled it on the YMMV; trying to do it for the CM page made it all sorts of janky.

Killzone tree:

  • Killzone series has several ruthless villains from the planet of Helghan:
    • Main series:
      • Killzone 3 & Shadow Fall: Chairman Jorhan Brimve Stahl takes the reigns of de facto leadership of the Helghast after Scolar Visari's death. A weapons manufacturer who tests his newest weapons on captive prisoners of war, Stahl uses his men as expendable pawns. After gleefully murdering his chief rival, Stahl makes preparations to bomb Earth and leaves his own armies to die. Surviving the conflict, Stahl makes plans to initiate "The Terracide" on the chief human homeworld to kill anything with human blood, even members of his own species. Backing terrorism, murder and genocidal science, Stahl repeatedly shows his only loyalties are to himself and his twisted greed and notions of strength.
      • Shadow Fall: Vladko Tyran, leader of the Black Hand, a Helghast terrorist group, is introduced via a massive terrorist bombing aimed at soldiers and civilians alike. Tyran has human hostages taken and orders them executed while loading captured trains with explosives and sending them to the city to kill as many people as possible. Tyran functions as Stahl's chief subordinate to pull off the Terracide, viewing humans as inferiors who deserve nothing less than extermination while attempting to shatter the peace between Helghast and human to send both sides in a brutal, pointless war. Tyran vows not to stop until "the streets run red" with human blood.
      • Shadow Fall: Dr. Hillary Massar is a human being who views the Helghast as "superior" species and believes the inferior must be annihilated. Using her scientific genius, Massar experiments fatally on innocent beings to develop a plague that will kill everything of Terran blood, no matter how small. Massar relished the point when it would be destroyed, killing all humans except for herself.
    • Mercenary: Colonel Vyktor Kratek is a ruthless Helghast officer with genocidal plans for the people of Vekta. Introduced torturing Admiral Grey, killing prisoners with gas to torment her and almost fatally shooting her in the head, Kratek retreats to Vekta where he forces Dr. Savic to create a virus for him by threatening his family. Testing the virus on petty criminals arrested in the slums, Kratek wanted to make it as virulent as possible to destroy all life on Vekta. Since Stahl is in Killzone 3, why not put him first and pothole him to 3 and Shadow Fall, then Mercenary, then Shadow Fall exclusive baddies? Unless, of course, Stahl does nothing of note in 3?

Also, I wouldn't call Kratek the Big Bad. He shares that role too much with Grey after Danner is recruited. Maybe just Insane Admiral or something?

Ah, glorious ACW! And now...

So here’s something more obscure. Remember when the Xbox 360 was new and Microsoft secured loads of JRPG exclusives? And how those didn’t really set the world on fire because the 360 wasn’t very popular in Japan?

Well, the game I’m talking about was one of them and inexplicably got a Remaster on PS 4.

Ladies and Gentlemen and Others, I present to you all:

The Last Remnant.

What is the work?

Final Fantasy XII.5. I got that joke from Super Butter Buns. Seriously though, published by Square-Enix, The Last Remannt is set in a world where the four races of people rely on mystical and mysterious artefacts called Remnants. They do different things, like protect towns or even warp reality. Society is reliant on these things yet know little about them. Our standard plucky anime boy hero tm Rush Sykes goes on a quest with his not boyfriend Marquis David Nassau and his Generals to save his sister and parents - and of course uncover a plot involving Remnants and the fate of all peoples. And one of the key players in this?

THIS PIECE OF HUMAN GARBAGE CALLED DUKE WILFRED HERMEIEN

Ahem.

Who is he? What has he done?

The Duke and Nagapur and current head of the Congress, Hermeien is the de facto ruler of the continent. But he wants more. He wants to be crowned God Emperor. To this end, he teams up with The Conqueror, a mysterious and inhumanly strong man seemingly from a distant village to wage a fake war - and if you wanna learn about The Conqueror, check my Magnificent Bastard EP for him on the MB thread. The plan is simple enough: The Conqueror will attack various cities, steal their Remnants, and Hermeien would swoop in and save the day, making him a hero and prime candidate for God Emperor. He also kidnaps Rush's sister, Irina, because she has Marion's Blessing - an inherited power that allows one to fully control Remnants - to further his claim to the throne. See, Marion was the first person to do this and she wed the first God Emperor - oh god I hope he doesn't want to do that for reasons I will elaborate on later.

Finally confronted by Rush and pals, Hermeien threatens Irina's life. She calls his bluff, insulting him - and he's so enraged it seems he's actually gonna kill her when he's stopped. See, his lackey Wagram actually worked for The Conqueror and they were manipulating him. A scuffle occurs which results in Nagapur's destruction when its Remnant goes nuts and Hermeien's disappearance.

Months later, Hermeien pops up again, now with super strength and having poisoned various world leaders with said power to kill them slowly. He mocks our heroes and is just so slimy and smug, still proclaiming he will rule the world.

But once beaten? The Conqueror shows up, chastises Hermeien for his hubris, STAMPS on his hand, leaving it a bloody stump as the pathetic slimeball cries for mercy, before The Conqueror raises his hand emitting a red aura, the camera pans around, Hermeien screams and all that's left of him is the blood dripping from the Conqueror's hand.

You think I'm done? That's just Hermeien in the MAIN story. In side stuff we find out he deposed his father, Oswald Hermeien, leaving him a beggar in the streets while faking his death, is behind the Third Committee, which pursues his Remnant research. We got kidnappings, human experimentation, threatening people to join them, artificial Remnant creation, people trafficking. One notable optional party member -after all her quests are done- tells the tale of how she and her gang worked for the TC, but were turned into experiments themselves. To live, they need to eat 10 times more than a normal person, hence they turned to Mercenary work.

The Third Committee are involved in a large portion of the sidequests attacking, murdering and doing all sorts of awful things. It's hard to sum it all up in fact, there's so much. And I should note, stealing Remnants basically means destroying the livelihood of the town you're taking it from. It's always treated as a big deal and no town or village recovers easily, even when some quests show it as the lesser of two evils.

Heinousness?

Only competition is The Conqueror himself, who doesn't count because of WIE goals. Hermeien is himself an unwitting pawn.

But that taken into account?

Hermeien thinks he's in control and authorises a destructive war, letting his own soldiers die for his own glory and power, has all the deeds of the Third Committee at his feet, tries to usurp The Conqueror when given a chance to serve and is far, far crueler than the real Big Bad even if The Conqueror has a worse plan. I'm invoking the Resources Argument - with Hermeien being a mere human and The Conqueror being almost a god himself - and the whole personal cruelty thing.

Mitigating Factors?

The very first scene we have of Hermeien has him meet Irina, chide her for talking, show resentment against her mother Marina for being successful and say that women should be subservient.

He never gets any better. He's a slimy, repugnant monster from beginning to end.

I actually felt a little sorry for him when he was killed - for a moment, and that wasn't rational on my behalf. He was so whiny and pathetic that it must have triggered some primal part of my brain that is responsible for sympathy. Because he doesn't deserve it and his death is delicious.

...OK, I have a bit of an axe to grind against this guy, but you really have to see him yourself. And I hope I've argued his heinousness enough.

One last bit of trivia: in an optional piece of dialogue Marina, the mother, at one point lets slip Oswald Hermeien is her father before trying to backpeddle.

That would make Wilfred her brother.

That would make Wilfred Rush and Irina's uncle.

You see why I hope he didn't want to marry Irina? I don't even know if he knows that they're his Nephew and Niece. I mean, you might think "how stupid can someone be?" but he's... pretty stupid.

Conclusion

One of my most personally hated keeps I've ever proposed.

I hope one and all accept him with the love he deserves.

@Polar Hmmm yeah...From my research, I guess the Janitors can make a skin of their teeth given that while the motivations are a bit hollow, they seems at least to have a personality that prevents them to be GDV but yeah, wait till I EP them.

Anyways, time to churn this one from my gargantuan to-do list and special thanks to miraculous for recommending me this movie and not only do I thank mir, I also thank G-Editor too for giving me a greenlight to cover this movie even if it was originally covered by him. But even then, I'll let G made an argument regarding this character in question.

What's the Work

Sucker Punch is a 2011 movie directed by Zack Snyder (Yes, that Zack Snyder) that tells us the story about a girl named "Babydoll" who got transferred to an asylum called Lennox House in 1960s thanks to her abusive stepfather. Due to the film's fantasy nature, the film has three worlds:

"The real world which is the asylum itself, the brothel world which is the imaginary world that the heroes spent their time in and of course, the imaginary crapsack world when the characters imagine themselves in a rather harsh situation when they attempt to escape."

Now like I said, the movie spent its time in the brothel world. However, the story is mostly about Babydoll and her friends that she made in the asylum wanted to escape from the asylum once and for all. However, there's one guy who is a hindrance towards their plan to escape and that one guy is the one that I'm going to discuss today. Meet Blue Jones everyone!

Who is He/What Has He Done

Now, Blue Jones himself? Is the head of Lennox House asylum and was one of the guys who accepted Babydoll to there because he got bribed by Babydoll's stepfather in which he accepts. In the brothel world, Blue was portrayed as an abusive owner of the brothel who controlled the girl with an iron fist including the psychiatrist, Dr. Vera Gorski and anyone who defies him will be locked in the kitchen storage.

Fed up with the asylum brothel in general, Babydoll attempts to escape from it and persuade the other patients of the asylum to do so. However, it was also revealed that Blue had a plans on Babydoll: Selling her to a gambler so that he could earn more profit. Oh yeah, I need to mention that some people failed to escape the asylum brothel as when they escaped, they died because of Blue.

In the meantime, while Babydoll and other patients attempted to escape by taking several important things so that they could escape, Blue began acting suspicious towards the patients and when one of the patients died during their attempt to escape, Blue becomes furious and angrily taunts Babydoll and the victim's sister that the patient's death is the atrocity they had done while scoffing her death and let other girls to perform the show and locked the star of the show, Sweet Pea, into the closet.

In the meantime, before the show began, he confronts the other girls at the backstage and demands a respect towards other girls and hate his possession escaped from him. After that, he shots the patients, Amber and Blondie, to make an example of them while he attempts to rape Babydoll for his own pleasure and revealed that he doesn't want his toys to be taken away and wanted to brought them back home.

However, while Babydoll and Sweet Pea managed to escaped, Babydoll decides to leave Sweet Pea on her own and stay in the asylum anyway because a sacrifice is actually the thing that could make the patient escape. After she decided to stay in the asylum, she ended up getting sold to the gambler anyway.

However, there's actually a plot twist in the film. The plot twist is that: The Gambler is revealed to be a good guy in the end and his real world counterpart is actually a doctor who hated his job on lobotomizing his patients as he had seen "tortured souls" during his tenure at the asylum.

When the doctor lobotomizes her, he is terrified by Babydoll's expression and asks Dr. Gorski on why she authorized this horrific procedure on lobotomizing innocent girls. It was soon revealed that Blue forged Dr. Gorski's signatures and this is not the first time he did it so that the Asylum staff can lobotomize them as Blue attempts to rape them which horrifies even his staff.

When Blue attempts to sexually assault the lobotomized Babydoll, he got angry because she's gone from this world and fortunately however, he got arrested at the end of the day due to the horrific operation that he ran and signature forging. But not before Blue claims that "he took care of the girls" and trying to incriminate Babydoll's stepfather about it. Have fun in the prison asshole!!!

Freudian Excuse/Mitigating Factors

Now here's a little bit tricky part. When one of the patient, Rocket, sacrificed herself to help Babydoll in her quest to escaped the asylum, Blue Jones is truly furious about it. The issue? I don't think Blue Jones cares a lot towards Rocket and use her death as a taunt for the other two patients and then scoffs it at the end of the day.

Heck, most of his relationship towards other women are not considered to be redeeming in the slightest as he views them as nothing but mere toys to play with, is blatantly abusive towards them and also pretty possessive as he refused to give his toys towards other people despite he wants to sell one of them for profit.

And yea, I don't consider his final fate to be redeeming either because in the end, he revealed himself to be a coward who tries to save his own skin when the tables turned against him, he does attempt to pin the crime to someone else and plays the victim card. And I also think his seemingly "care" towards other girl is mitigating either given his relationship towards them...Take that as you will.

Heinous Standard

Now, in the movie, despite having All Men Are Perverts trope, there are two men who attempted to rape someone other than Blue, one of them being a chef who raped Rocket and one of them is of course, Babydoll's stepfather, who I recall raped Babydoll and was the dude responsible to brought several girls to the Lennox Asylum.

However, I might going to give Blue Jones a bit of a leeway here. Murdering 2 of his patients in the brothel world and is strongly implied that he had more blood on his hands when the patients attempted to escape the asylum, raping Babydoll twice in both real world and the brothel world, forging a signature so that he could lobotomize several innocent girls and this was not the first time he did that before... Yea. I might say he passes the standard by the skin of his teeth.

While yes, I should note that we only see Babydoll getting lobotomized and you could argue that the other lobotomies are Offscreen Villainy, there are several patterns like the signature forgery that is identical to the previous one and how doctor saw the tormented souls during his tenure in the Asylum...Yea, I'm torn on this one.

Final Verdict

I'll admit that I might torn a little bit on this one actually and I got a little bit of a help thanks to The Directors Cut. I will let ~G Editor made several convincing arguments to get Blue to the trope but if he doesn't qualify, oh well...I thank both miraculous and G on this one. Until then, thoughts?
