8888 Cluster From Left to Right

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cluster_8888_symbol.png
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Due to the changes of the world by the Manhattaning, most of them reside in different cities and countries than in the show.
  • The Empath: They can share their senses, emotions, thoughts, and memories with other sensates — particularly those that belong to their sensate cluster.
  • Extreme Omnisexual: While they all had differing sexualities, their rebirth as sensates made them all pansexual, although they still have their preferences from before that time.
  • Gender-Equal Ensemble: Four men (Will, Lito, Wolfgang, Capheus) and four women (Riley, Nomi, Sun and Kala).
  • Multi National Team: Will and Nomi are American, Riley is from Bjorland, Kala is from India, Capheus is from Zambezi, Sun is from Rhelasia/Korea, Lito is from Corto Maltese and Wolfgang is from Vlatava.
  • Numerological Motif: The number eight, being 8 members born on August 8th of 1988. And they all had meaningful events happen to them at age eight.
  • Sensory Overload: When a clustermate is overwhelmed with intense pain, the excess pain may flood over to the rest of the cluster, resulting in excruciating phantom pain.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Like most sensates, they're vulnerable to electricity. Electric shock overstimulates the psycellium nervous system of most sensates and induces severe pain and seizures — often with violent coughing of blood and bloody noses.

    Will Gorski
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/will_gorski_earth_27.jpg

Before Will's ability to psychically read objects and persons with a touch fully manifested at his sensate rebirth, he would periodically get intense headaches and visions of things happening to other people. As a child, this would lead him to become involved in the disappearance of a young girl. He was convinced the girl was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered. He ended up investigating the case fully in an attempt to prove that his visions were real. He had a close call with the man who murdered the girl and ended up in therapy. Ultimately, this would lead him to become a cop as an adult.

  • Adaptational Backstory Change: He was from Chicago on the show, but here he lives and works on Gotham City. He's also a military veteran who fought on Qurac and Khandaq.
  • Badass Driver: While he no longer likes to drive, Will is an accomplished driver, trained in police pursuit tactics.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Will has a soft spot for victims of social injustice.
  • Does Not Drive: Though trained in police pursuits and advanced driving techniques, Will's psychometry and/or migraines can impair Will at a moment's notice. As a result, Will is now averse to driving. When on-duty, Will leaves the driving to Diego.
  • Fair Cop: GCPD Detective and pretty good looking.
  • Generation Xerox: Became a police officer just like his father Michael Gorski.
  • Lovable Jock: To paraphrase Will's partner, Detective Morales, Will "keeps himself looking tight." Will does by maintaining a good diet and exercising regularly.
  • Meaningful Name: William means a 'desire to protect', which is pretty fitting for a cop.
  • Missing Mom: His mother Clarity "Claire" Gorski died when he was only 8 years old. That and the disappearance of his friend Sara made him act out against his father.
  • Nice Guy: Will is a very friendly, good-hearted and sincere person.
  • No-Respect Guy: Most officers of the GCPD do not respect Will and regard him as weird at best. Many consider him a stain on the Gorski legacy within the department.
  • Official Couple: He and Riley Blue are lovers.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Through his late mother Claire Kincaid-Gorski, he's the nephew of Unity Kincaid, grandson of Fred Kincaid, cousin of Drury Walker, Rose Walker and Janosz Valentin, and cousin once removed of Kitten, Jack, Melanie and Ivy Walker.
  • Second Love: For Riley, who lost her husband and daughter in a car crash.
  • The Strategist: Will is brilliant tactician with sound strategic reasoning and the leadership skills to organize a unit effectively. He often preemptively makes plans and contingency plans for multiple scenarios so he is ready to act quickly.
  • Supernatural Sensitivity: Will is able to see, hear and interact with beings on the astral plane — particularly sensates, but also ephemeral entities, and invisible spirits such as ghosts. He is also sensitive to intrinsic and psychic phenomena. Unlike the typical sensate, this ability was activated for Will prior to his rebirth as a sensate, likely as the result of the trauma caused by his mother's death.
  • That One Case: The disappearance of his friend Sara Patrell and his inability to solve her case even as an adult continues to trouble him.
  • Touch Telepathy: Will has the ability to scan objects and persons for residual psychic impressions which he can interpret as extrasensory experiences — often visions, voices, or emotions. The use of this ability usually requires Will to touch a person or object and make a conscious effort to activate a scan.

    Riley "Blue" Gunnarsdóttir
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/riley_blue_earth_27.jpg

Before her sensate awakening, Riley's dormant powers would lead her to believe she was hexed. Blaming herself for the death of her mother, as well as feeling guilty for surviving an accident that killed her husband and daughter, Riley fled to London. In London, Riley became part of the underground music scene and got heavily involved with drugs as a means to self-medicate her mind's strange sensations.

  • Adaptational Nationality: Icelander in the show, she's from Bjorland here.
  • Broken Bird: She hasn't entirely recovered from the traumatic event that caused her to leave Bjórland, and it shows in her aloof behavior. She also self-medicates, has high self-loathing and continued suicidal desires as well.
  • Cunning Linguist: Besides her native Icelandic, she's also fluent in English, French and Dutch.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Hazel eyes and brown hair.
  • Daddy's Girl: She clearly still adores her father Gunnar.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her mother died in her youth, which she blames herself for. And then, as an adult, her husband died in a car crash while driving her to the hospital to give birth to their daughter, and then her daughter died of exposure in the Icelandic winter. At some point after this happened, she tried and failed to kill herself, and eventually ran away to London and became a DJ.
  • Does Not Drive: Riley cannot bring herself to operate vehicles since the death of her daughter. She is also usually high or stoned. She often gets nervous on long voyages.
  • Imperiled in Pregnancy: While she was on the verge of giving birth, she and her husband got into a car accident which killed him, leaving her to give birth by herself in the middle of a car in a snowstorm. Her newborn baby then died from exposure.
  • Mindlink Mates: With Will she is the closest amongst the cluster.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother Ellen Gudmundsdóttir died when she was eight, and her death is what made her believe she was hexed.
  • Nonconformist Dyed Hair: Has a dyed blue streak on her bleached blonde hair, hence her nickname of Blue.
  • Official Couple: She and Will Gorski are lovers.
  • One Degree of Separation: Sven Larsson, the Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man, is a family friend and she was even born at his house.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Her daughter Lúna tragically died due to cold exposure mere hours after she was born.
  • The Social Expert: Riley has a gift for networking — particularly among artists and criminals. Even outside of England and Bjórland, Riley has a knack for quickly developing contacts willing to give her information, offer support for the right price, or provided her with empathic manipulation which makes it difficult to discern if Riley had a talent for this which her psionics amplified or if her talent was just a fragment of her dormant psionic potential manifesting itself discreetly through Riley's subconscious.
  • Touch Telepathy/Magic Music: A combination of sorts. Riley can also impart a psionic impulse into objects she personally handles or into music that she has engineered personally. Those who handle the objects or hear the music may be influenced by whatever emotions Riley has imparted. The effect is stronger when the recipient, the target object, and the emotion imparted are synchronized and cohesive.
  • We Used to Be Friends: She used to be friends with Barbie Hatfield and Sidney Debris/Ken McCoy, until Sidney sold her out to the Norsefire government while he and Barbie left England.

    Bak Sun-hee
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bak_sun_hee_earth_27.jpg

Sun took the fall for her brother's crimes to preserve her father's company and reputation. At the time of her sensate rebirth, Sun has left the world of professional martial arts and entered prison. Having gained a newfound sense of self, after having realized that she would never truly get her father's respect, Sun decides to break out of prison and live on the lam.

  • Action Girl: Sun is a world-class martial artist, having mastered seven martial arts styles with techniques in joint-locks, strikes, grapples, ground tactics, and weapon techniques.
  • Adaptational Nationality: She was from Seoul, South Korea on the show, but here she comes from Rhelasia, the unified Korean nation that arose after the Manhattaning.
  • Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: Averted. She wears a sweater that doesn't cover her flat stomach, but she's not that feminine when compared to Kala, Riley or even Nomi.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Sun's short, neatly trimmed haircut qualifies as Power Hair in a business setting and she is a very skilled economist, but as this trope when her martial arts skills are on display.
  • Emotionless Girl: Sun has difficulty expressing her emotions, having spent so much time trying to minimize her temper and putting her own needs behind those of her father and brother. When put into situations requiring charm rather than intimidation.
  • Enemy Scan: Sun has the ability to gain insight on her opponents by being in their presence, instinctually assessing if they are carrying weapons, if they intend to inflict harm, if they anticipate danger, or what their next move may be. Sun can also learn new martial arts techniques by seeing them performed or used against her.
  • Fight Clubbing: Since her father no longer approved of her fighting in martial arts tournaments, she entered underground mixed martial arts tournaments under fake names to win money.
  • Genius Bruiser: Besides kicking ass and taking names, Sun is a highly skilled economist and financial expert. Likewise she is able to understand the operation and management of large international corporations.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: When Sun becomes angry, she will usually react violently — often smashing nearby objects. She can refrain from violence through meditation, but even that does not always work.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: Sun cares more about her dog Jindo than her family.
  • Inscrutable Oriental: Sun is extremely collected and composed, but her spirit shows through when taking down opponents using her martial arts.
  • In-Series Nickname: Spirit of Krypton.
  • Minored In Ass Kicking: Sun is a junior executive in her father's company by day and an underground kickboxing champion by night.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother Mi-Cha died of cancer when she was young, and Sun promised her mother she would take care of her father and brother.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: She's not very imposing at 5'7"/170cm but is an extremely skilled asskicker.
  • The Promise: She made one to her dying mother to always take care of her brother and father, which is what spurs her to take the fall for Joong-ki in the first place.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: She's a high-powered business woman who can literally leave a crater in your desk with her fist.
  • Suppressed Rage: She deals with her frustration from years of mistreatment by channeling it into her fighting. She can be completely calm and poised in any other situation, but is very aggressive, sometimes to the point of Screaming Warrior, whenever she fights.
  • Taking the Heat: Due to the promise she made to her mother, she willingly took the blame for her brother's crimes.

    Capheus Onyango
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/capheus_onyango_earth_27.jpg

Obsessed with 1980s and 1990s action movies (with one star in particular), Capheus used his knack for mechanics and driving to start a business as a for-hire bus driver. At the time of his sensate rebirth, Capheus' business is struggling as he puts more of his earnings toward buying medication for his sick mother. This is made all the more difficult by the machinations of rivaling crimelords.

  • Adaptational Nationality: Kenyan in the show, he's from Zambezi here.
  • All the Other Reindeer: Being the son of two people from opposing tribes meant he wasn't accepted by either of them.
  • Badass Driver: Capheus can do things with a 33-person bus that many stunt drivers would think impossible. Behind the wheel of a sports car or other high-performance vehicle, there is very few things he cannot do, though he retains a particularly affinity for vans, buses, and other large ground vehicles.
  • Best Friend: His best friend is Jela Juma.
  • Car Fu: He's your go-to guy for car chases.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father Matu Ba was killed when he was only five by terrorists and the ones responsible were never caught.
  • The Engineer: Capheus is an incredible mechanic. Once he has taken something apart with his bare hands, he can easily put it back together again — and also gain a deeper appreciation and understanding for its use.
  • Fanboy: Capheus has memorized many sound bites and snippets from articles that quote Superman. He consumes any source of media pertaining to Superman he can get his hands on. Capheus can even read a little Kryptonian.
  • Fatal Flaw: Naivety. Capheus, tends to neglect pragmatism in favor of moral idealism.
  • Geek: Capheus is savvy in popular culture, particularly action movies, comic books, and is also an all-around herophile — particularly in regards to his favorite hero, Superman.
  • Hassle-Free Hotwire: Capheus's van has been stolen a few times. He learned a few tricks in order to steal it back. He knows how to hot-wire automotive vehicles.
  • The Heart: Capheus is a very joyful person, and he tends to bring out the joy in the other sensates when he interacts with them.
  • Hero-Worshipper: He is a huge fan of Superman, even naming his bus the Van of Steel.

  • Momma's Boy: Ever since the death of his father, he's been very close to his mother Shiro, doing the best he can to get her the medicine she needs.
  • Nice Guy: It's murky given his job, but at the end of the day, Capheus just wants to take care of his mother and experience life to its fullest.
  • The Pollyanna: Capheus is an optimist and good-natured person. Despite the difficulties life has presented him and the horrors he has witnessed, he remains positive and hopeful, always waking up, anticipating that he will have a "very good day".
  • Related in the Adaptation: His father is Matu Ba, the mentor and ally of David Zavimbe, the first Batwing in the comics.

    Lito Rodriguez
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lito_rodriguez_earth_27.jpg

Lito is a closeted gay actor known for high-octane action movies and cheesy heterosexual romantic films. He is a big star in the Spanish-speaking film industry, which often makes his personal life difficult as he and his boyfriend must keep their relationship a secret. After his sensate rebirth causes him to have a bad day on the set, Lito drinks too much and requires a lift home from his female co-star who then discovers Lito's live-in boyfriend. Rather than go public with this knowledge, the actress agrees to keep this secret in exchange for posing as Lito's girlfriend as a way to keep her controlling ex at bay.

  • Action Hero: The type of role he seems to get typecast in In-Universe. He's not really one, though, as he's an actor.
  • Adaptational Nationality: Mexican on the show, he's from Corto Maltese here.
  • Affectionate Nickname: His mother calls him Carlitos, which is the origin of his public name Lito.
  • Beneath the Mask: Lito usually plays a selfless hero in his roles but he believes in real life that he is a coward. He is afraid is many things — but mostly the exposure of his true sexuality.
  • Character Tics: He has a tendency to verbalize, smack his lips, and say "Pah" when he trying to amp himself when doing a scene.
  • The Charmer: Even without use of his mesmerism, Lito is widely regarded to be a very attractive and charming individual. He's a modern day sex symbol. As the saying goes, everywhere Lito goes "men want to be him and women want to be with him".
  • Charm Person: Lito has the ability to put others in a light trance, making them highly suggestible and allowing him to affect their behavior and thoughts. He can channel this ability through eye contact, his voice, or physical touch. For greater effect, Lito can direct his mesmerism through multiple channels simultaneously. Once someone has fell to Lito's charms, they become more pliable to his direction. However, once the effect has been shaken off once, it becomes more difficult to restore the effect.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father Carlos Gutierrez died before he got to know him, so he was raised by his mother Estella and his four aunts.
  • Gayngst: He fears that his career would collapse if his sexuality were made public.
  • Gentle Giant: He's tall, he's built, and he behaves like a puppy.
  • Granola Guy: Lito works out regularly and adheres to a fairly strict diet to keep his body in peak condition.
  • Guile Hero: Due to his experience as an actor, he's most likely to talk than punch his way out of trouble.
  • Hidden Depths: Lito practiced as a flair bartender for six months for his role in Bloodstained Tequila. He can quote lines from his movies with ease. He has played thieves, assassins, priests, cops, criminals, doctors, and more. Lito has learned to easily portray these sorts of characters and others as well.

  • Manly Gay: Well yeah, the image he projects is pretty manly and he's gay, while his boyfriend Hernando is more of Straight Gay.

  • Only Known by Their Nickname: His name is actually Carlos but he's known in public as Lito, which is a shortening for 'Carlitos', a nickname by his mother.
  • Perma-Stubble: Feeds into his manly man image.
  • Secret Relationship: Since he feels he can't go public about his sexuality, his relationship with Hernando is kept secret, until they bring Dani to the fold.
  • Spit Take: Does this when Daniela reveals her love of gay porn.

    Kala Dandekar
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kala_dandekar_earth_27.jpg

Kala is the religiously devout daughter of a chef and restaurateur. In her personal life, Kala has always prided herself balancing her loves of science and her faith. Kala's own genius and her father's adherence to her success allowed her to excel to land a prestigious job at a pharmaceutical development firm. It was there that she caught the eye of the firm's son. At the time of her sensate rebirth, Kala is preparing for her upcoming wedding.

  • All-Loving Hero: Kala's optimism and positive outlook is likely attributed to her devout spiritual faith. Some supernatural creatures will be repelled by her mere presence, though others will seek her out specifically.
  • Animal Talk/The Beastmaster: Kala can understand animals and is understood by them. In addition to this, Kala is almost always seen as a friend by non-predatory creatures. Even predators will often only antagonize her when they perceive her as a threat.
  • Belief Makes You Stupid: Discussed and averted. Kala is a competent scientist and sees no conflict between religion and science. This is also why she's pretty down with the whole sensate thing; to her, it's all different ways of seeing the world through Ganesha's eyes.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Don't let her quiet and soft appearance fool you, she has proven herself able to fashion devastating chemical deterrents and even improvise explosive devices.
  • Bollywood Nerd: She's Indian and a very intelligent chemist and pharmacist.
  • Celibate Hero: She was completely uninterested in romance and hadn't explored her sexuality until Rajan proposed to her. Now as a Sensate she's pansexual.
  • Fatal Flaw: Indecisiveness. Kala often suffers from analysis paralysis over determining the best course of action when prompted to make any important decision for which she hasn't already considered or planned.
  • Give Me a Sign: She pleads with Ganesha to give her direction regarding her upcoming wedding.
  • Good Parents: Her parents were very supportive of her and her life decisions, with her father Sanyam motivating her to embrace modernity and not limit herself by traditions, while her mother Priya nurtured her religious views.
  • Healing Hands: Kala has the ability to act as a conduit, transforming psychic energy into intrinsic energy keyed to the Red. Through this manner, Kala can promote cellular growth and influence the biology of other humans, as well as animals. Using this ability, Kala can cause a creature to immediately fall asleep or heal at a rapid rate - in addition to other similar effects.
  • The Medic: Though her specialty is in medication, rather than medicine, Kala is still a capable diagnostician, holistic physician, and field surgeon.
  • Not That Kind of Doctor: When her cousin Maya is injured and poisoned by Komodo and goes to her for treatment instead of going to the hospital, Kala has to point out she's a pharmacist and chemist, not a surgeon. Luckily her healing powers help cure her cousin from the poison.
  • Oblivious to Love: Her social awkwardness and lack of interest in romance meant she was completely unaware of Rajan's interest in her until he gave her lots of flowers and asked her on a date.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Through her uncle Rasi Gupta, she's the cousin of Chandi Gupta/Maya of the Justice League, and through her aunt Rani Singh she's also the cousin of Kiran Singh/Solstice of the Titans. Her aunt is Arani Desai/Celsius of the Doom Patrol.
  • Secret-Keeper: She becomes the first person to find out her cousin Chandi is the superhero Maya, and she's in turn the first one to find out Kala has powers too.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Kala is not the best in social situations.
  • Token Religious Teammate: While she might not be the only religious sensate, she's the only one for whom religion is a prominent part of her life.

    Wolfgang Bogdanow
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wolfgang_bogdanow_earth_27.jpg

  • Abusive Parents: His father Anton was an abusive alcoholic towards both him and his mother. When he revealed he had impregnated his own daughter, Wolf snapped and got his father killed.

  • Hidden Depths: Wolfgang is a good singer, but can only do it around others when he is really drunk.
  • Impoverished Patrician: The Bogdanow family once was wealthy, but lost most of what it had when Vlatava's economy collapsed after the Manhattaning, meaning Wolfgang grew up poor.
  • Le Parkour: Wolfgang is highly athletic. He is easily able to scale a wall to reach a high window and can quite easily outrun your average police officer.
  • Nephewism: He became the ward of his aunt Tashana and uncle Werner after the death of his parents.
  • Master of Unlocking: According to his best friend, Wolfgang is "the best boxman in the business". Wolfgang is, without a doubt, one of the world's best safecrackers.
  • Parental Incest: The result of one. His father Anton impregnated and then married his own daughter Irina, which while frowned upon, was not illegal for Vlatavan nobility.
  • Patricide: He caused the car accident that killed his own father Anton, although considering he was a vile, abusive, and incestuous alcoholic, not many looked too hard into the death.
  • Related Differently in the Adaptation: While Wolfgang was also the result of Parental Incest in Sense8, in the show his father had been his mother's stepfather rather than her biological father.
  • Related in the Adaptation: His aunt is Tashana Bogdanow, better known as Lady Quark, making him nephew by marriage of Werner Zytle/King Vertigo, the usurper of Vlatava, while his other uncle is Szemere Bogdanow, known as Scimitar.
  • Resting Recovery: By shutting off his ability to perceive time, Wolfgang can place himself in a trance-like torpor where hours can be spent without risk of boredom.
  • Super-Senses: Wolfgang is able to see, hear and interact with beings on the astral plane — particularly sensates, but also ephemeral entities, and invisible spirits such as ghosts. He is also sensitive to intrinsic and psychic phenomena.

    Nomi Marks
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nomi_marks_earth_27.jpg

Born Michael Marks, Nomi comes from an uptight background that ran contrary to her personal truth. After serving a stint in juvenile detention for computer crimes, Nomi distanced herself from her family and began to live as a proud lesbian and transgender woman. Though in a happy relationship with her girlfriend, Nomi is now hospitalized after the confusion from her sensate rebirth resulted in an accident that put her in the hospital.

  • Does Not Drive: She actually never learned how to drive.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": She hates that her mother continues to refer to her by her birth name Michael.
  • Great Detective: Nomi and her girlfriend Amanita are avid fans of the literary sleuth Nancy Drew. The two's curiosity has led them more than once into fashioning themselves into intrepid investigators in the vein of Nancy Drew. Their success has been hit-and-miss but they still are convinced that the tenet 'What Would Nancy Drew Do?' will always see them through safely and will always see justice served.
  • Hackette: Nomi is an incredibly skilled hacker. Though her new psionic abilities have dropped her into a whole new playing field, she was exceptional enough hacker on her own that she had considerable commercial success marketing her skills. She is also a highly skilled programmer and computer engineer.
  • Intrepid Reporter: As an independent journalist for her vlog, Nomi is a skilled investigator. This includes both digital and analog research techniques, as well as exceptional interview skills.

  • The Social Expert: As the daughter of a rather successful lawyer, Nomi grew up in a environment where she became familiar to varying degrees with many important figures from local, state, and national politics. She used this knowledge to help inform her insight and shape her political views. Nomi's vlog does not shy around from political topics. Nomi's background and knowledge of the political arena is part of the reason for the success of her vlog.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She stands at 5'10"/178cm tall and she's quite pretty.
  • Taking the Heat: Back when she was young, she took the fall for her hacker friend Bug who hacked into a government system, her reasoning being that she was a young juvenile with rich white parents allowing her to get off with just community service.
  • Technopath: Nomi has the instinctive knowledge needed to create, shape, and manipulate technology and technological constructs, computers, robots, hardware and other devices that can be termed as "technology". Nomi can also interface with computer data or intercept various signals without the use of a technological device. Essentially, her brain works like a wireless computer.
  • Trans Tribulations: As an adult, Nomi is in a very happy relationship and surrounds herself with the accepting LGBT community of Star City, and she doesn't have any internalized trans- or homophobia, at least not anymore. However, her estranged mother completely refuses to accept her as a woman, and she had a very scary run-in with the medical establishment not treating her like a sane adult able to make her own decisions.
  • Twofer Token Minority: She's a transgender woman and a lesbian as well.
