"Let Our Powers Combine!"note

The Earth-Spirit Gaia had decided that the time had come to take a more direct part in protecting Earth and its peoples. She has trusted five young humans with rings of power that wield control over the elements and can summon forth one of Gaia's own ancient creations, a reformed titan now called Captain Planet. The ring-bearers have come to be known as the Planeteers and are based in Elpida, the traveling and mystically hidden island home of Gaia (it is the smallest, most Eastern island in the Themysciran archipelago).

The Planeteers were each chosen by the rings themselves, with each ring containing a soul of Gaia which enables it to control one of the four classical elements and the fifth granting its wielder potent psychic abilities. The rings can also be used to combine their power to different effects, but most commonly to create a dimensional rift that allows the Titanic spirit of Iapetus to materialize on our plane in the form of "Captain Planet" for a short time, but though Iapetus is reformed and more benevolent, he is still a titan and does not appreciate being summoned for light matters so the Planeteers only use him in the direst situations. The summoning ritual is further complicated by requiring that the five be in "one mind" during the summoning, thus causing the ritual to fail if the Planeteers have some contention in their ranks.

    In General
  • Adaptational Origin Connection: As noted below, their powers come from intrinsic fields like The Green and The Burn.
  • Age Lift: The Planeteers are in their twenties rather than being in their teens.
  • Celebrity Superhero: Their identities are known to the public, and are more like activists with superpowers than actual superheroes.
  • Chest Insignia: In their Planeteer outfits they have an insignia of their element.
  • The Chosen Many: They were all chosen by Gaia, with Kwame, Gi and Ma-Ti downright believed to be destined for something great thanks to their ancestry.
  • Color-Coded Elements: They wear outfits color-coded in their respective elements.
  • Elemental Powers: The forces that empower their rings are the intrinsic fields known as The Green, The Burn, The Clear, The White, The Melt, The Red and The Od (Magic).
  • Ring of Power: They use rings based on the Lantern rings of the Emotional Spectrum created by Gaia.
  • Multinational Team: They all come from different countries, chosen by Gaia to protect Earth, especially its environment.
  • Named by the Adaptation: The full names of the Planeteers weren't known in the original series.
  • Power Glows: When using their powers their eyes and rings glow their respective color.

    Captain Planet (Iapetus)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/captain_planet_iapetus_earth_27.jpg

  • Achilles' Heel: Iapetus has a weakness to adamant, even though he himself is created from the same metal.
  • Adaptational Badass: This Captain doesn't have a weakness towards pollution (or mental pollution for that matter). His strength actually matches that of Superman.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: The original Captain Planet was quite hammy and boisterous, but here he's much serious, even if he's growing a sense of humor.
  • All Your Powers Combined: When in the proximity of the rings of the Planeteers, he can use any of their powers.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: His adamant body gives him a blue-white skin color.
  • Amnesiac Hero: After being released from Tartarus, Gaia realized imprisonment had stripped him from most of his identity and memories, so she worked to mold him into a more benevolent being.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Despite losing eleven of his twelve souls and being imprisoned in Tartarus, he's still an incredibly powerful being that matches the strongest heroes.
  • Cain and Abel: He's the Abel to his half-sister Eurybia's Cain.
  • Captain Superhero: He's Captain Planet.
  • The Champion: He's the Champion of Gaia.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Iapetus is not known for his personality. Ancient texts claim him to be a dour and grim being, and time spent in Tartarus likely didn't do him many favors in the personality-building department, but Iapetus is beginning to show a new side. He cracks the occasional joke and even seems to do a little performing for the crowd during his battles near onlookers.
  • The Dreaded: He was the most feared of Ouranos' children, with only his brother Kronos even more dreaded.
  • Elemental Powers: He can use all the elements the Planeteers' rings represent as long as they are in his proximity.
  • Everyone Is Related: Child of Gaia and member of the original Titans, he's very much involved with the Greek Pantheon. He's the father of the Titanspawn Buphagus, Atlas, Menoetius, Anchiale and the twins Prometheus and Epimetheus, making him father in-law of Pandora.
  • Extreme Omnisexual: Unsurprisingly for an immortal being from Ancient Greece, he's pansexual.
  • Magical Barefooter: He's barefoot, which isn't a problem since he's almost invulnerable and can float.
  • Manly Facial Hair: This Captain Planet has a beard and he's a manly Greek Titan and superhero.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He has a sculptural physique and doesn't wear a shirt.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: Iapetus is unharmed by conventional weaponry, and is immune to pain, common physical ailments, and disease.
  • Omniglot: Iapetus instinctively understands any and all languages.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: His son Buphagus was slain by Artemis during the Titanomachy, and his other son Menoetius was blasted into oblivion by Zeus to protect his daughter. This sent Iapetus into an Unstoppable Rage were he faced his nephews Zeus, Hades and Poseidon.
  • Patricide: Back in the ancient days, he helped his brother Kronos overthrow and kill their father Ouranos, with him holding down his father's right arm as his brother dealt the killing blow.
  • Red Baron: One of his titles is the Bringer of Dusk.
  • Red Is Heroic: Wears red mythril armor, and while once feared, he now fights to protect the planet that his mother embodies.
  • Reformed Criminal: He went from an enforcer of his brother's will to rule the Earth, to Earth's champion.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Being the Titan Iapetus, son of Gaia and Ouranos, it makes him the great-uncle of Diana, Cassie Sandsmark and great-great uncle of Menodora.
  • Time Abyss: He's six million of years old.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: He doesn't bother or need to wear a shirt.

  • The Chains of Commanding: Kwame is often under a lot of stress as the leader of the Planeteers. If stressed beyond his capacity, he can break.

  • Dishing Out Dirt: His power element is Earth, being the champion of The Melt.
  • Green Thumb: He's also a champion of The Green, meaning he can also control plant life.

  • In Name Only: Other than codename, he has nothing in common with Adam Fells, the original Geomancer.
  • It's Personal: Against Argos Bleak, Lyuben Plunder's henchman, ever since he beat Kwame to near death, leaving him scarred.
  • The Leader: He's the lead Planeteer. Always level-headed, Kwame tends to ask questions nobody else seems to think of and is good at thinking on his feet.

  • Nice Guy: Patient, kind, calm, and cares about others and the environment.
  • Parental Abandonment: He never knew his father, and his mother died from a plague when he was fourteen.

  • Abusive Parents: His father Charles Wheeler was an abusive alcoholic.

  • Making a Splash: She's the champion of The Clear, and as such she can control water.
