SEGA heroes unite!

Sega Heroes was a Massively Multiplayer Crossover Role Playing Match-Three Game released for iOS and Android. It was shut down on May 21st 2020 due to Sega and the developer Demiurge parting ways.

The dimensional conqueror Dremagen has attacked the worlds of various Sega franchises, recruiting their villains to join her legions, and it's up to the player to save the day.

The game included the following franchises and characters:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog (Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prowler, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Rouge the Bat, Shadow the Hedgehog, Cream the Rabbit and Cheese, Big the Cat, Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon, Silver the Hedgehog, Charmy Bee)
  • Golden Axe (Ax Battler, Gilius Thunderhead, Tyris Flare, Death Adder)
  • Shinobi (Joe Musashi, Ageha, Hotsuma, Hibana)
  • Streets of Rage (Adam Hunter, Blaze Fielding, Axel Stone, Mr. X)
  • Super Monkey Ball (AiAi, Baby, GonGon, MeeMee)
  • Jet Set Radio (Beat, Gum, Captain Onishima, DJ Professor K)
  • Phantasy Star (Wren, Rolf, Lassic, Alis Landale)
  • Crazy Taxi (BD Joe, Gena, Gus, Axel)
  • House of the Dead (Dr. Curien, Agent G, Thomas Rogan, Ebitan)
  • Valkyria Chronicles (Alicia Melchiott, Selvaria Bles, Welkin Gunther, Largo Potter)
  • Shenmue (Ryo Hazuki, Shenhua, Tom Johnson, Ren of Heavens)
  • Altered Beast (1988) (Centurion Red/Werewolf, Centurion Green/Weredragon, Neff, Centurion Yellow/Werebear)
  • ChuChu Rocket! (Chuhi, ChuPea, ChuBach, ChuBei)
  • Virtua Fighter (Pai Chan, Kage-Maru, Sarah Bryant, Akira Yuki)
  • Like a Dragon (Kazuma Kiryu, Goro Majima, Shun Akiyama, Taiga Saejima)

See also Sega Superstars, a related Sega Crossover series. Don't confuse with Sonic Heroes.

Tropes associated with Sega Heroes are:

  • Action Bomb: Shenhua's "Taishiki" ability grants a chance for her to trigger an explosion when attacked.
  • Adaptational Attractiveness: Dr. Curien has never been ugly by any means, but he's also never been anywhere near the looker that he is here since most of his appearances elsewhere were as of a low-res low-poly model and as the Wheel of Fortune. Not to mention he happened to be released on Valentine's Day...
  • Adaptational Badass: This is the first time Crazy Taxi cast has actually done any fighting barring Axel's bio stating that he likes to start fights.
  • Adapted Out: Weretiger is absent from the Altered Beast (1988) roster, being replaced by Neff.
  • Allegedly Free Game: While the game is free to play, buying things like gems to unlock new characters and recharge energy costs real money. How bad is it? You need to pay money to buy "hero shards" which are used to unlock or rank up a hero. You also need to pay money to buy coins to level up your heroes. You need to pay money to buy "spirit stones" every time your characters gain 10 levels to remove the level ceiling from said character. And lastly you need to pay money to buy skill reagents to level up your characters' skill. While you can earn the latter three through playing normally, the former are a mixed bag- weaker characters can be earned, but stronger characters requires buying shards with points earned during PvP or Survival mode. And the PvP mode’s payout is extremely unfair. To wit, you need to be at a certain rank to earn the kind of points needed to buy the shards - the game divides PvP points into Tokens and Mega-Tokens, and you can only earn Mega-Tokens when you’re at a high enough rank- that free players can only dream of achieving. So that means paying players who bribe their way to victory are better rewarded. If you dare to try PvP against a paying user, expect the game to be tilted heavily against you. Survival mode is just as bad- you’d better be grinding before you take on survival mode because the game will tilt the board against your favor if you don’t grind.
  • Always Accurate Attack: Alicia's MAX Skill "Undodgeable Shot" has her shoot at the target a total of five times, disregarding any dodge chance they have.
  • Anti-Climax: Defeating Dremagen in the final battle of Campaign Mode achieves absolutely nothing. She just teleports away while declaring that you haven't seen the last of her. Amy even lampshades it, remarking, "I thought this was going to be it", but the other heroes assure her they'll get Dremagen next time. Unfortunately, the game's impending shutdown means there will be no "next time".
  • Anti-Frustration Features:
    • If you've cleared a stage with a three-star rating, you can Loot it, immediately netting you the stage's clear reward(s) without you having to actually play it, which is very handy when grinding. Event stages can only be looted once per day, but campaign stages have an option to Loot them multiple times at once.
    • Legendary events sometimes occur which given that you have the requisite characters ranked with at least four stars, you can simply clear the first stage to earn enough shards to unlock or promote Legendary characters.
    • Some Star and MAX Skills have long enough animations that the enemy they're targeting might already have been killed by the time they connect. If this happens, these moves will either target a new enemy, or trigger their secondary effect anyway.
    • If a Survival stage is about to end horribly such as nearly all of your teammates are down, you can simply retreat and you can retain all your heroes albeit at a small reduction in health. Do this too many times, however, and you'll eventually lose a hero for the entire run.
    • The game has a “Link Devices” feature to enable cross-platform play between Android and Apple devices without losing your progress due to the incompatibility between Google Play and Game Center which the game uses as cloud saving.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: The Valkyria Chronicles cast's MAX Skills individually involve a lance-shaped warhead, a tank, a Wave-Motion Gun, and... five consecutive accurate shots from a rifle.
  • Artificial Stupidity: If the AI can make a match-4 or a match-5 with the same cluster of tiles, it will make the match-4, every single time.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • In Jet Set Radio, DJ Professor K, though a vital figure in the game's plot, only appeared in-game during cutscenes to act as Mr. Exposition. He was playable in the Game Boy Advance port of the original Jet Set Radio, but outside of that, this is his first playable appearance.
    • From the same game, Captain Onishima was an antagonist who chased the player to arrest them, and disappeared halfway through the game due to the whole force being freaked out by the Big Bad. He's also made playable for the first time.
    • Ebitan has been promoted from a Mook and borderline Goomba into a playable character.
    • Shenhua only appeared in Shenmue in the intro and in a handful of dream sequences, and doesn't appear in person until the end of the second game. Here, she's made playable.
    • 2019 introduced Joke Character Chester for an April Fools event. He returns in 2020's April Fools with a standard team, a backstory and is Promoted to Playable.
  • Ascended Meme: Sonic's passive skill is called "Gotta Go Fast", and its description refers to how he "rolls around at the speed of sound".
  • Aside Glance: Several characters do this as part of their victory animation. For example, Ebitan's victory "animation" simply has it move its eye to look at the camera.
  • Awesome, but Impractical:
    • Dr. Curien's abilities which include his Star Skill converting a portion of a target's health into an ally's own as well as converting Star tiles into Super Star tiles when a match-5 is made are really great, but said abilities mostly revolve around reviving allies such as to make use of his passive ability to grant a damage buff to them. This doesn't sound good if you're three-starring levels, and is downright useless in Survival Mode, where allies can't be revived.
  • Badass Normal: While you can recruit warriors who can cast spells or ninjas with Ninjitsu, a group of former cops armed with their fists and street weapons, two AMS agents with nothing but firearms and four cabbies from the West Coast can put up a fight as well.
  • The Beastmaster: Dr. Curien never actually physically fights, but rather sics leeches as his standard attack and summons Hermit for his MAX Skill.
  • BFG: Largo Potter wields a lance which fires anti-tank rounds.
  • Bears Are Bad News: Centurion Yellow is able to transform into Werebear.
  • Big Bad: Dremagen. She brought all the in-game universes together and made a Clone Army.
  • Blood Knight: Both Blaze and Ax Battler welcome the prospect of fights as the group makes it way along.
Blaze: Do we really want to head into this area? A place like this means a lot of clones. That means a lot of things to fight.
Ax Battler: I welcome a good battle. Besides, we have little choice. The road to Dremagen leads through the city.
Blaze: Okay, just checking. Let's roll!
  • Blind Bag Collectables: While you don't keep anything from the gachapon balls Ryo opens as his MAX Skill since the toys inside are replaced with some sort of energy, his reaction to the prize inside causes him to increase his damage, especially with the rarer ones.
  • Blow You Away: Shenhua's basic attack has her summon a gust of wind which damages the target. Somehow.
  • Boring, but Practical: Alicia's MAX Skill is simply just 5 shots from her rifle. This is very underwhelming compared to her fellow cast using a tank, a Wavemotion Gun and a lance-shaped warhead, but it never misses.
  • Bottomless Magazines: Aside from Thomas Rogannote  and Agent G pumping his shotgun during his MAX Skill, none of the firearm-wielding characters are seen reloading their weapons at all nor run out of ammo.
  • Bribing Your Way to Victory: Players who often pay cash are better rewarded. And the only way to get some of the strongest characters is to pay upfront for the shards, as the only other way to get the shards is to get a high enough rank in the PvP roster - which is not possible for players who don’t pay up.
  • Canon Foreigner: Both Centurion Green and Centurion Yellow were never in the original Altered Beast (1988). Instead, they are new characters made to give Weredragon and Werebear Centurion forms separate from Centurion Red, who solely represents Werewolf.
  • Car Fu: The MAX Skill of the Crazy Taxi characters all involve them driving their taxis into enemies.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Rolf's MAX Skill Megid works like how it did in his home game; take some damage from your party and then deal the same to your opponents. Although it doesn't take half the health of the party members this time.
  • Cats Are Mean: KapuKapu appears as a field boss and a Guild boss.
  • Chest Monster: Chester, a minion of Dremagen who appeared in April Fools events in both 2019 and 2020. In the latter, he's accompanied by a whole team of chest monsters.
  • Clone Army: The majority of Dremagen's forces are copies of heroes, villains, and mooks from the various Sega universes.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Each character has a color gem and even clothes (or fur in Team Sonic's case) to show what gems they represent.
  • Counter-Attack: The "Counter" status deals a set amount of damage to whoever attacked the target with this. Shenhua has a unique variant called "Taishiki", which has a chance of her emitting an explosion when hit.
  • Crippling Overspecialization:
    • Wren is an expert in technology. With magic, he's clueless.
    • Due to the Blue Caterkillers being immune to Physical damage, having a team which purely deals Physical damage is a bad idea.
  • Crisis Crossover: It's definitely one for each of the series involved.
  • Crosshair Aware:
    • A crosshair moves onto the target when Thomas Rogan uses his MAX Skill "Empty Clip".
    • Alicia moves one onto her target when using her MAX Skill.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Quite a few bits of dialogue among the characters at the beginning or end of the different zones include moments of snark. Even Cream, who's usually quite polite due to her upbringing in her home universe, gets in on it at one point, mouthing off to Death Adder.
Death Adder: Cease your staring, creature. Do not look at me.
    Death Adder: You should be.
Cream: And yet here we are.
  • Developer's Foresight: If Tom uses his MAX Skill while Sonic is in the party, he gives the blue blur a chili dog instead of a regular hot dog.
  • Divergent Character Evolution: In the original Altered Beast (1988), Werewolf, Weredragon, and Werebear were all alternate forms of the Centurion. Here, Centurion is re-branded as Centurion Red and only able to transform into Werewolf, whereas Weredragon and Werebear are given new characters as base forms in Centurion Green and Centurion Yellow, respectively.
  • The Dividual: Cream and Cheese act as one hero.
  • Disc-One Nuke: Captain rarity heroes such as Silver and Akira Yuki unlock immediately leveled up to 50, with level level 5 skills, even if your player level wouldn't allow you to level a character up to 50 when you get them. This can be a huge early boost in power if a player is lucky (or rich) enough to get one, especially in Arena where you're likely facing players around your player level.
  • Drives Like Crazy: The Crazy Taxi cast. It's even in the name! Their MAX Skills all directly involve them.
  • Easter Egg: If you use Tom’s MAX Skill "Hot Dog Vendor" with Sonic on your team, he'll be given a chilli dog instead.
  • Elite Mooks: Sometimes you'll run into Dr. Eggman, Metal Sonic, Death Adder Jr., KapuKapu, or a copy of a playable character with jacked-up stats.
  • Enemy Mine: You know the situation is dire when you would team up with a crime boss and conquering warlords against a darker enemy. Death Adder even states "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" to Ax Battler concerning his own problems with Dremagen, since she took his land.
  • Even the Subtitler Is Stumped: When Chester returns for the April Fools 2020 event, he has a new Skill named "Star Power". Its description when you first fight him reads, "I'll be honest, I have no idea what this one does." When you get to play as Chester later in the event, you learn that "Star Power" creates three Star Tiles, an ability that would be useless for the enemy Chester because enemies can't use Star Tiles.
  • Exact Words:
    • Some attacks like Dr. Curien's MAX Skill "Hermit" function by dealing guaranteed damage to the target while dealing a number of hits to random targets if there are any. If the target happens to be the only enemy on the field, or they have the Taunt buff, then all the bonus attacks hit them.note
    • The April Fools 2020 event was advertised with a banner declaring "Free Chests from Dremagen!", similar to the previous year's event. After the first battle of the event, you realise this doesn't mean "Receive free chests from Dremagen", but "Free the chests from Dremagen's control". The banner even changes to add, "The verb, not the adjective!"
  • Faceless Goons:
    • All variants of the Ninja enemies. They're all identical animated corpses of the Oboro clan with talismans covering their faces.
    • All variants of the Imperial Shocktroopers. Only a small fraction of their face is visible.
  • Forklift Fu: Ryo's Star Skill has him ram a forklift into the enemy team and stun the direct target.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation:
    • Several heroes appear in cutscenes in Campaign Mode despite not being playable in that mode. Wren is the first you'll meet, after beating Stage 47.
    • In a broader sense, there's no correlation between when you unlock (or are likely to unlock) a Campaign Mode hero, and when they actually appear in the story. It's entirely possible for heroes you haven't unlocked yet to join the party out of the blue, or for a hero you've been using for weeks to suddenly introduce themselves as though they've never met their teammates before.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: This is how the Streets of Rage team (minus Mr. X) fight in standard attacks. Knuckles, Werewolf and Neff also use them in their standard attacks. It’s also the MAX Skill for the Centurions if they haven’t transformed yet.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: More like Guest Star party. The final battle against Dremagen of the 2020 April Fools event has you controlling Chester and his team of Chest Monsters instead of any of your usual characters.
  • Gun Twirling: Thomas Rogan does this as his victory animation.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Chester pulls this in the 2020 April Fools event. After failing to defeat the heroes, he and his fellow Chest Monsters turn on Dremagen to save their dimension.
  • Hellish Copter: Captain Onishima's MAX Skill is to call in a helicopter to fire missiles at his enemies.
  • Holiday Mode:
    • A special Easter event focusing on Cream and Cheese took place in a version of the grasslands area which has Easter eggs all over the ground.
    • On April Fools, Dremagen sends you a free Ultimate Chest which turns out to be a monster called Chester.
    • A Fourth of July event had a special stage in a night-time version of the grasslands area.
    • In celebration of Halloween, the game's main menu was changed in October 2019 to feature Werewolf, Ebitan, Hermit, and Sonic, as well as the title being changed to "SEGA Fearoes".
  • I'm Not Afraid of You: Cream, of all characters, says this word for word at Death Adder.
  • Improvised Weapon: Axl's Star Skill involves him whacking the target with a stop sign he ran over earlier. In fact, all of the Crazy Taxi cast primarily use these as well as their taxis such as car parts. Axl's default weapon is the silliest in comparison as he chucks a pair of toy dice you hang on the rear-view mirror.
  • Joke Character:
    • Chester the Chest Monster Dremagen sics on you on April Fools. It has pathetically-weak attacks which give it the Taunt buff... in a battle by itself.
      • Chester shows up again in a 4th of July event, backed up by a full team, and his attack now dishes out Taunt to the entire team, thus making the effect equally worthless.
      • Downplayed, if not averted outright, when Chester returns for April Fools 2020. While his own attacks are still weak, he's now backed up by allies who are actually pretty strong... strong enough that together, they defeat Dremagen herself and rescue their dimension. His situation is also decidedly not funny.
    • The Big Ben enemies may seem threatening at first with their passive skill which grants them immunity to all attacks when buffed, but their own attacks aren't very powerful. The least dangerous is the green variant which, at its worst, can guarantee a hit against a hero with Perception, such as Hotsuma. Even then, it’s Scratch Damage.
  • Kevlard:
    • The Big Ben enemies are immune to damage if they get granted a buff.
    • Gus is noticably larger out of the whole Crazy Taxi team and packs the most health between the four of them. His Star Skill even lampshades this as it's called "Spare Tyre".
  • Large Ham: Largo Potter in spades. His trademark "VEGGIE POWER!" is his Star Skill (under the name "Veggie Maniac") and he yells “KABOOM!” when using his MAX Skill "Rocket Lance".
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Downplayed since it wasn't that important to the plot, but Shenhua's Star Skill reveals that the game's title is based off the tree in her front yard.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Thomas Rogan's Passive Skill is literally called "Rail Shooter".
  • Left Hanging: As noted under Anti-Climax, Campaign Mode ends with Dremagen teleporting away and the heroes vowing to defeat her for good some other time. Their worlds don't even get restored back to normal.
  • Lethal Joke Character: Sure, the last people you’d think of to fight against a world-conquering sorceress and her army would be a group of cabbies and a hot dog vendor, but they’re capable of taking on robot armies and a ancient-power wielding War Witch.
  • Lethal Joke Item: The rear-view mirror toy dice Axel chucks as a standard attack may seem silly considering what the other Crazy Taxi cast throw, but thanks to his passive skill, he can deal ridiculous amounts of damage to enemies over 50% of their health.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: Prior to being changed in an update, Mr. X's passive skill "Crime Boss" had him give a party member at certain health percentages the Taunt status so all enemies will target them, but also boosted their Defense to compensate. The enemy Mr. X you can encounter still has this. Ren instead has a variant of this as his Star Skill.
  • Life Drain: Dr. Curien's Star Skill "Bio Reactor" has him use it to convert a target's HP into the weakest ally's own. Weirdly, it'll still restore HP even if it misses.
  • Limit Break: Each playable character has a MAX Skill that can be triggered after you match or destroy a certain number of tiles in their colour. While some provide buffs or heal teammates, others deal heavy damage and usually leave debuffs to enemies.
  • Mad Scientist: Dr. Curien, to the extent he's apparently willing to experiment on his teammates. It's even the name of his Passive Skill.
  • Magic Versus Science: After Stage 108, Wren notes that he could push everyone's worlds back if he found the device that's causing all the trouble, only for Ax Battler to point out it could have been caused by magic instead since Dremagen appears to be a sorceress of sorts. Wren notes that if that was the case, they'd be in trouble.
  • Magikarp Power: Gena's base power leaves a lot to be desired, but give her enough coins and she can effectively one-shot nearly every enemy and power-slam bosses with a tiny wrench.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: Ax Battler's Star Skill, "Warrior Cry", and every single one of DJ Professor K's attacks.
  • Mascot: Sonic, obviously, though it's notable that his relevance is more downplayed here. On the one hand, he's not a major part of the Campaign until Zone 20 (which, depending on your grinding speed, can be days or months into it), his shards are hard to get and he's not even the Legendary of his collection (that, oddly, goes to Tails). On the other hand, he's still on the front of the game's artwork and in the app icon, you get his shards mainly via Achievements, and he's far better and stronger than any other blue character, by miles.
  • Mecha-Mook:
    • Dr. Eggman's Badniks.
    • The Robotcop-type enemies.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter:
    • Welkin's Passive Skill "Nature Lover" has him deal damage when a Rally match is made, effectively having more opportunities to attack.
    • Werewolf introduces a unique transforming mechanic which starts with the red Centurion who transforms with his Star Skill and has an alternative moveset.
  • The Medic: Certain characters have skills that can heal the party. For example:
    • Beat's MAX Skill "Theatre of Sound" heals the party for a small amount of health and creates some blue and green star tiles.
    • Rolf's Star Skill has him throw out a Dimate to the party member with the lowest health.
    • Dr. Curien's Star Skill, "Bio Reactor", has him convert the target's health into the weakest ally's own as well as adding Mana to any downed allies, making reviving them much easier.
    • Tails' MAX Skill has him deploy a support bot which restores the health of his allies and grants them Regeneration if the Rally meter is at level 3.
    • Chuih's MAX Skill grant their one ally with lowest health Regeneration by summoning a herd of Chuchus and if the Rally meter is at level 3, they give it to the whole team instead.
  • Mickey Mousing: B.D Joe's victory animation involves him dancing which syncs exactly with the victory theme on normal speed.
  • Money Spider: After you defeat Chester on April Fools, you take out the loot he was carrying inside.
  • My Rules Are Not Your Rules: The enemy teams you fight against aren't bound by the same color restrictions as you. For example, Stage 176 of Campaign Mode pits you against an entire wave of Yellow Heroes, followed by an entire wave of Red Heroes. Downplayed in that this usually doesn't really give them any advantage.
  • Never Trust a Trailer: The promo trailer for the game features an out-of-gameplay segment which puts Axl and Sonic together at the same time, which is impossible since they're the same Hero Color.
  • Ninja: The Shinobi cast is this, as well as the mooks from their series.
  • No Body Left Behind: The generic Mooks and character clones fade away when defeated due to being copies made by Dremagen. The Badnik enemies also explode when beaten. The exceptions are Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic, who fly away when they run out of health. An update added the effect of enemy teams fought in the Arena to vanish as well, minus the purple particles.
  • Non-Indicative Name:
    • One of the first things Amy does when she meets Ax Battler is ask why he's called Ax Battler when he fights with a sword.
    • Captain Onishima's Star Skill is called "Six-Shooter" as a reference to his revolver. He actually only shoots three times when he uses it.
  • Not So Above It All: Even Dremagen plays along with the April Fools festivities by giving you a free chest with guaranteed valuable loot... except it's a Chest Monster.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. As of the addition of the Shenmue cast, you have Axel Stone and Axel, Joe Musashi and BD Joe, and Wren and Ren.
  • Original Generation:
    • Dremagen, the master of a thousand dimensions and Big Bad of the game who collects heroes from across different worlds with the intent to rule over them.
    • Chester the Chest Monster which Dremagen sends you on April Fools under the guise of a free Ultimate chest.
    • The Centurions who transform into Weredragon and Werebear didn’t appear in Altered Beast (1988).
  • Overlord Jr.: You can sometimes find Death Adder Jr. as an Elite Mook.
  • Pistol-Whipping: Mr. X's Star Skill has him smack the target with the back of his Tommy gun. Previously, it collected some coins from them until it was later changed to inflict the 'Wound' condition and destroy a special tile owned by the target.
  • Power Creep: No new Common heroes have been added since the second set of new characters (Thomas Rogan), and no new Rare heroes have been added since the third set (Welkin Gunther). Together with the addition of a fifth "Captain" rank, this means each new set is guaranteed to have at least one character who's as strong as, or stronger than, your existing ones - that is, if you can get enough Shards and coins to level them up.
  • Power Up Mount: You can encounter Chicken Leg enemies which are more-powerful versions of the Golden Axe mooks.
  • Purposely Overpowered: Sonic; among other things, his Star Skill gives you an extra turn, letting you rack up damage without fear of retaliation.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The quest to defeat Dremagen begins with a pink hedgehog, a poorly-named sword-wielding warrior, a detective and a monkey in a gachapon ball. Then they meet more mismatched people from different universes on the way.
  • Rank Inflation: At launch, there were four ranks of increasing power and rarity: Common, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. Starting with Silver the Hedgehog, a fifth "Captain" rank was added, that's even stronger and rarer than Legendary and buffs heroes of a specific class.
  • Revolvers Are Just Better: Captain Onishima uses one as his weapon in combat.
  • Required Party Member: Some Daily Events require the player to bring a hero with a certain characteristic such as Virtuous or Scoundrel.
  • Running Gag: During the campaign, several of the characters comment on AiAi's gachapon-like ball he rolls around in, such as how he can breathe in it, if there are other monkeys from his world that use them and he even points out to Big the Cat that he can leave it any time he wants.
  • Scary Black Man: Centurion Green, who is the Legendary Hero for Altered Beast (1988) and transforms into Weredragon.
  • Shock and Awe: Death Adder, Gillus Thunderhead, Lassic and Weredragon are able to use electrical attacks.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: Agent G's MAX Skill has him pull out a shotgun and blast the opponent point blank, Dramatic Gun Cock and all. It deals a good chunk of damage and is likely a House of the Dead III reference.
  • Situational Sword: Kazuma Kiryu's Passive Skill means that the opposing team gains a coin every time they activate a skill. Kazuma's MAX Skill then allows him to steal all the opponents' coins at once. This is an excellent way to rack up lots of coins... unless the opposing team includes Gena, who can spend coins each turn to grow stronger. If it does, you're in big trouble.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Crossover: Sega's flagpole franchise Sonic the Hedgehog is somewhat understandably way more represented that all the others, having 8 playable characters at the game's launch (Sonic himself being a special reward for the game's Achievement System and Purposely Overpowered) as well as two Boss NPCs in the form of Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic, the former being Dremagen's lieutenant and responsible for all the clones attacking the heroes as well as naturally providing the Badnik enemies. Four more Sonic characters were added later on.
  • Shield Bash: Alis's Shield Bash skill, which not only does damage to one target, but also puts a shield over the whole party.
  • Tank Goodness: Welkin Gunther’s MAX Skill has him show up in the Edelweiss.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: When Death Adder meets the party in Campaign Mode, he makes his disdain for them perfectly clear, but joins them anyway because "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". Ax Battler, whose family were killed by Death Adder, is understandably furious about having to work with him and insists he'll betray them as soon as the battle is over... but also admits that Death Adder is absolutely right, and they'll just have to work together for now.
  • Token Evil Teammate: While many of the heroes you can obtain are just that, you can also get Death Adder, Mr. X, Captain Onishima, Lassic, Dr. Curien and Ebitan, Selvaria Bles, and Neff for your team. Depending on your definition of "evil", you could probably also throw Shadow, Rouge, Ageha, and maybe Ren of Heavensnote  in there as well.
    • The game itself is even aware of this trope, having all the aforementioned characters (except Ageha) all be classified under a class called "Scoundrel".
  • The Unfought: Dremagen was this initially despite being the Big Bad, as no boss fight against her existed in the game until the game's first anniversary, where she was patched in.
  • The Undead:
    • The Ninja enemies are in fact reanimated corpses of the Oboro clan controlled by the talismans on their faces.
    • An Ebitan is a playable character.
  • Unsound Effect: The firearm-wielding Valkyria Chronicles Heroes and the White and Red Imperial Shocktrooper enemies have "RATATAT" unsound effects appear when they fire their guns. Unusually, the guns also make actual sound effects.
  • Unwinnable by Design: Downplayed, but if you start a level with a team that only uses physical attacks and it happens to have a blue Caterkiller which ignores physical damage, you've effectively lost the level. You can simply restart it, of course, but if it's a Campaign, Beyondering or Event level, you've wasted the energy spent to start it.
  • Villain Team-Up: It's established early in Campaign mode that Doctor Eggman is working alongside Dremagen, and both he and Metal Sonic appear repeatedly as bosses. You can also find Death Adder Jr.
  • Wave-Motion Gun:
    • Wren fires these as a standard attack. His MAX Skill "Positron Bolt" fires a huge one from his chest.
    • Selvaria also fires these as a standard attack and as her MAX Skill.
  • We Will Meet Again: Every time you defeat Dremagen, she teleports away while proclaiming, "Insolence! You have not seen the last of Dremagen!" Annoyingly (and ironically), she does the exact same thing after you defeat her in the Final Boss fight of Campaign Mode.
  • The Worm That Walks: Although the game doesn't display it and only references it via his name and passive skill, Death Adder is essentially a walking pile of snakes.
  • Wrench Wench: Gena. Her Star Skill is performing repair work on her taxi which restores her health and she throws a wrench as her weapon.
