Gohda Clan and Allies

    Master Shiunsai

Master Azuma Shiunsai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_07_12_15_12_42.png
"So, you have survived the training, you are now an Azuma ninja Rikimaru/Ayame, but you still have much to learn."
Voiced by: Paul Eiding
Master of the Azuma Ninja in service to Lord Gohda, retires as the start of the story and passes the position of leader to Tatsumaru.
  • 10-Minute Retirement: Retires at the start of the game, but is forced to take up his sword again when Tatsumaru slaughters the Azuma village.
  • Big Good: Alongside Lord Gohda, he serves as this for the Azuma ninja in Birth of the Stealth Assassins. Lord Gohda becomes the sole Big Good of the series after Tatsumaru kills him.
  • Hero Antagonist: After Tatsumaru loses his memory and joins the Burning Dawn, he becomes this and is ultimately killed by his former student.
  • Old Master: He provides words of wisdom to his students when they ask for his help.
  • Old Retainer: Deeply loyal to the Gohda Clan, and their most respected warrior.
  • Parental Substitute: Adopted Rikimaru, Tatsumaru and Ayame into the Azuma clan after they were orphaned as children.
  • Passing the Torch: Selects Tatsumaru as his successor after his retirement.
  • Sword Cane: Master Shiunsai wields one with incredible speed for someone so old.
  • Trickster Mentor: Has shades of this, he drops Ayame and Rikimaru down a trapdoor full of enemy ninja to complete their training.

    Lady Kei

Lady Gohda Kei

Wife of Lord Gohda, and mother of Princess Kiku.
  • The Lost Lenore: Kei was Lord Gohda's wife, and dies at the start of Birth of the Stealth Assassins. Her death weighs heavily on the mind of her husband, Lord Gohda Matsunoshin.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: In a feudal era Japan where wars between samurais and daimyos often occur, she died at a fairly young age, leaving behind a mourning husband and a small daughter.

    Jubei

Jubei Tachibana

"Ninja are hired help who stab from behind. Let's see you fight like a man."
Voiced by: Phil Clarke

Lord Gohda's fencing instructor and finest samurai.

  • Dual Wielding: Uses a pair of katanas as his weapons of choice.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Sports an eyepatch over his right eye and is among Lord Gohda's finest warriors.
  • Final Boss: Of Tatsumaru's story, and by extension; of Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins as a whole.
  • Hero Antagonist: To Tatsumaru's Villain Protagonist.
  • Hold the Line: Single-handedly holds off a squad of Motohide's goons while urging the wounded Lord Gohda to take a secret passageway out of the castle to safety.
  • Undying Loyalty: Honorably serves Lord Gohda til his dying breath.

    Urano

Urano Takehito

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_07_12_20_01_20.png
"I'll... I'll fight you! Wait just a minute, ooh my back."

An elderly samurai in service to Lord Gohda, he guards a boat at his Secret Harbor.

  • *Crack!* "Oh, My Back!": Every line from him is a complaint about his poor back, being a really old man. He will even occasionally stop his attack to stretch his back. It's also his win quote and last words should he either defeat or be killed by Tatsumaru.
  • Hero Antagonist: To Tatsumaru's Villain Protagonist.
  • Mighty Glacier: Incredibly slow but still able to put up a fight against Tatsumaru.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: Justified, his age has curved his spine leaving him constantly hunched over.
  • Old Soldier: He looks like he just came out of retirement. Justified since the Burning Dawn have been killing/kidnapping most of Lord Gohda's more able bodied men so he's the best they have on short notice.

The Burning Dawn

The Master

    Kagami

Lady Kagami

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_07_12_14_39_31.png
"I am my own master!"
Voiced by: Mary Kay Bergman

Leader of the Burning Dawn ninja clan, she seeks to eliminate the aristocracy of Japan and create a world ruled by the ninja.

  • Big Bad: Of Birth of the Stealth Assassins.
  • Bodyguard Betrayal: She serves Lord Toda and appears as backup after Tatsumaru bests him in battle, only to behead her former master to further her own ambitions.
  • Chainmail Bikini: Her armour exposes her cleavage, midriff and thighs, but this doesn't stop her from being a formidable opponent.
  • Cruel Mercy: Rikimaru defeats her in a showdown but refuses to finish her off, letting her live for a few minutes longer knowing that her dream will never come true. Kagami eventually dies from her wounds.
  • Decapitation Presentation: She beheads Lord Toda and then tosses his flaming head into his camp, causing widespread panic among his men.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: Kagami served Lord Toda as head of his ninja group, but betrayed him in order to pursue her own dreams.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She cares deeply for her companions and turns out she falls in love with Tatsumaru.
  • Evil Feels Good: Subverted; underneath all her evil laughter and gloating, Kagami feels terrible for the innocent deaths she caused, as evidenced by her brief breakdown in the quarantined village. However, she believes it is too late for her to abandon her cause, for the sake of her followers and all those who died for her, making her all the more tragic.
  • Femme Fatale: Attractive and manages to seduce Tatsumaru, but nonetheless extremely dangerous with a blade.
  • Final Boss: Of Rikimaru's story in 2.
  • Lady of War: She wages war against samurai clans and other nobles.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Her armor exposes a lot of her flesh, with prominent cleavage.
  • Pet the Dog: Unlike pretty much everyone else, she treats Genbu with kindness and praises him whenever he does a good job.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Kagami is first seen by Tatsumaru while dressed in her Noh costume. Just like in the West, actors are usually men so it is surprising for Tatsumaru to see that this female character is played by an actual woman.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Receives one from Rikimaru after their showdown.
Rikimaru: I'll happily suffer the title of Fool if it means I can save even one life from your blood-drenched dream. Farewell, Kagami.
  • Together in Death: She hugs Tatsumaru's corpse as she lays dying.
  • Visionary Villain: Her dream is to build "a world ruled by the ninja". In other words, her dream is to destroy the noble system in Japan so ninja can be freed from their obligation to serve the nobles and obtain the rights to live their own lives without hiding in darkness "like a thief".

Lords of the Burning Dawn

    Suzaku

Lord Suzaku, the Red Sparrow

See Onikage

    Genbu

Lord Genbu the wise, the Green Titan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_07_12_23_00_22.png
"Sneaky ninja Genbu sneaks up on you again!"
Voiced by: Jordan Lund
One of the four lords of the Burning Dawn, also known as the Green Titan.
  • Affably Evil: The friendliest enemy in the game, but still serving the bad guys.
  • Bald of Evil: Downplayed. The only reason Genbu is marked as "evil" is because he belongs to a different ninja clan and his loyalty to Kagami.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: His reason to pledge allegiance to Kagami.
Genbu: Everybody says "Genbu, you big dumb oaf!" and everybody laughs. But Lady Kagami says "Genbu, you did good!" She treats me like how she treats all the other ninja.
  • Carry a Big Stick: Wields a large pair of fish-shaped steel clubs in combat.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He may act like The Ditz, but he has high health and he can clobber you around in a matter of seconds if you are not careful.
  • David vs. Goliath: the Goliath to Ayame's David.
  • Dumb Muscle: One of the toughest enemies in the game and is clearly not very bright.
  • Friendly Enemy: Becomes one to Ayame over the course of the story. By the time they meet for the final time, it's pretty clear that neither of them really wants to kill the other, but their respective allegiances force them to fight anyway. Losing to him will have him expressing sorrow and regrets about having to kill Ayame, and winning the fight will have him asking her what her name is, then fondly saying that "Ayame" is a pretty name before dying. Ayame then bids him farewell, calling him "Genbu the Wise, Lord of the Burning Dawn" with genuine respect.
  • Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain: Downplayed; as his boss fights can attest, he's a very dangerous opponent in a direct fight. However, he's completely hopeless as an actual ninja, and his comedic moments make him rather endearing.
  • Ironic Nickname: His moniker as a lord of the Burning Dawn is "Genbu the Wise". Everything he does throughout the story shows he is anything but.
  • Kind Hearted Simpleton: Genbu is an interesting example, because he fits the trope despite being one of the "bad guys"; he's not evil, the only reason he serves Kagami is because she treats him with kindness and respect.
  • The Klutz: He's very clumsy for such a high ranking ninja.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Genbu refuses to stop fighting as he feels he owes Kagami for all she did for him.
  • Noble Demon: One of the most honorable enemies in the series, he even praises Ayame honestly before he dies.
  • Shout-Out: He dies standing on his feet as he loses to Ayame, just like Musashibo Benkei.
  • Smoke Out: Parodied, he drops a smoke bomb to escape from Ayame after their initial fight, only to get stuck in a window. Ayame frees him of his predicament with a swift kick. He tries a similar tactic on Kubon Island only to disguise himself as a rock in plain sight. Ayame tosses a grenade into his alleged hiding spot and sends him running.
  • Third-Person Person: Always refers to himself by his own name to emphasise his simple-mindedness.
  • Unnecessary Combat Roll: Subverted. His combat roll makes him invincible for about two seconds and is chained with double-mace swing, which deals pretty amount of damage if Ayame gets hit.
  • We Can Rule Together: He thinks if Ayame asks real nice, she could join up with Lady Kagami.
  • With Catlike Tread: His every attempt at stealth leaves a lot to be desired. He crashes from the ceiling when trying to get a surprise attack on Ayame; when Ayame encounters him on Kubon Island he loudly announces his presence, and after blinding Ayame with a smoke bomb he hides himself under an obvious camouflage blanket and proclaims "You can't find me!" Ayame and her grenades disagree.

    Byakko & Chiro

Lord Byakko, the White Tiger & Chiro

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_07_12_20_36_12.png
Chiro and Lord Byakko
Voiced by: Unknown
One of the four lords of the Burning Dawn, also known as the White Tiger. He fights Rikimaru and Ayame in a bamboo forest alongside his loyal pet tiger, Chiro (Kotaro in the Japanese dub).

  • Horse of a Different Color: Byakko mounts the tiger Chiro as his steed.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Chiro is one of the hardest bosses in the game, he is very ferocious and can juggle attacks against Ayame in quick succession if she is not careful.
  • Loyal Animal Companion: Byakko is never seen without his loyal tiger, Chiro.
  • Mighty Glacier: Chiro is the toughest animal enemy in the game. He cannot be knocked down nor can he expose his unprotected back.
  • The Napoleon: Byakko is very short and very unpleasant.
  • Out of Focus: Byakko receives the least focus out of the four Burning Dawn Lords. He only appears in two distinct scenes throughout the game; once in the Bamboo Forest during both Rikimaru and Ayame's story; and briefly during the early part of Tatsumaru's story alongside the other Lords of the Burning Dawn.

"Let me kill the child ninja for you, my love."
Voiced by: Tasia Valenza

A kunoichi affiliated with the Burning Dawn. She is in love with Suzaku and accompanies him during the raid on the Temple of Dreams.

  • Apologetic Attacker: If she defeats Rikimaru, she will apologise and remark that they could have been friends in a sultry voice.
  • Blow Gun: Uses a poison dart gun against Rikimaru in her boss fight.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Is clearly heartbroken when Suzaku heartlessly stabs her after she is defeated by Rikimaru.

Dahai voiced by: Dwight Schultz
Xiaohai voiced by: Quinton Flynn

A Father-Son duo of Chinese Pirates hired by the Burning Dawn in their slavery operation. The elder Dahai operates atop Kubon Island whereas they younger Xiaohai works at a secret harbor.

  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Wang Xaohai, a Chinese pirate expert in hand-to-hand combat.
  • Good Hair, Evil Hair: Dahai has a villainous Fu Manchu inspired mustache and is a evil slave trader.
  • Neck Lift: Dahai will hold Ayame up by the neck if she loses the boss battle against him.
  • Sinister Shades: Dahai wears a pair of dark glasses that obscure his eyes.

    Snake, Slug & Frog

The Snake, the Slug & the Frog

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_07_12_23_34_51.png
Left-to-Right: Snake, Slug & Frog

A trio of bodyguards who come to Tatsumaru's aid after his attack on the quarantine village.

  • Animal Motifs: Their speech, appearance and fighting styles are all based on the animals they're named after.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: Frog is the big, the most muscular of the group; Snake is thin and wiry like his namesake; and Slug is the shortest of the three.
  • Dual Boss: All three of them fight Ayame at once.
  • Maniac Tongue: Snake and Slug's tongues hang out of their mouths to emphasize their deranged attitude.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: They're a weird bunch of guys who have significantly less health than other bosses and even most regular enemies in the game; the challenge of their fight comes from fighting three enemies at once.
  • Sssssnake Talk: Snake's few lines have him hissing throughout.
  • Tattooed Crook: Snake's nearly nude body shows off his scaly tattoos covering his entire body, and includes a snake tattoo that wraps around his neck multiple times.

Other Enemies

    Gohda Motohide

Gohda Motohide

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_07_12_14_20_02.png
"The world is torn apart by war; I am the house of Gohda's only hope. The peasants must learn their place!"
Voiced By: Peter Renaday
Lord Gohda's treacherous uncle, he kickstarts the plot off by launching a surprise attack on Gohda castle.
  • Ambition Is Evil: Has no noble goals and is only interested in expanding his own influence.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Unlike his nephew Gohda Matsunoshin, Motohide is a madman willing to commit evil acts to attain power.
  • Asshole Victim: After everything he's done, no tears shall be shed when Lord Toda betrays him.
  • Blatant Lies: When he informs Lord Toda of Matsunoshin's survival, he tries to downplay his failure by boasting of how Matsunoshin was severely wounded by his expert swordplay. As his fights can attest, he is a very poor swordsman.
  • Decapitation Presentation: Should Rikimaru die during the boss fight against him, he will be seen holding up the severed head of Lord Gohda in victory.
  • Dirty Coward: With his sword skills weak, he is not above cheating by using a gun.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He believes Matsunoshin's benevolence is a sign of weakness, and would rather continue his late brothers reign of conquest.
  • Evil Old Folks: Much older than his nephew, and as such believes he should inherit the Gohda dynasty after his brothers passing, even resorting to killing his own family to get it.
  • Evil Uncle: The vicious and greedy uncle to the honorable Lord Gohda.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Matsunoshin defeats him in combat and refuses to deliver a killing blow to his uncle. Motohide rewards his mercy with a surprise gunshot. Matsunoshin later takes a strike from Rikimaru to spare his uncle from the ninjas wrath, who responds by fleeing; murdering Lady Kei and kidnapping Princess Kiku.
  • Hypocrite: When he is mortally wounded by Lord Toda, he weakly asks "Have you no honour?" which is rich coming from the guy who brought a gun to a sword fight. Toda himself recognises this and calls out the dying warlord for betraying his rightful master.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: Lord Toda has him killed after kidnapping Princess Kiku, Ayame remarks that he deserves his cowards death.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Even after his nephew takes a hit for him and spares his life, Motohide kills his wife, and kidnaps his daughter.

    Lord Toda

Lord Toda Yoshida

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_07_12_14_26_11.png
"The wine of victory is sweeter when you don't have to share it."
Voiced by: Greg Eagles

Longtime enemy of Lord Gohda, he provides Motohide with the services of his own personal ninja as part of a gambit to take over Gohda's lands.

  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Unlike the benevolent Lord Gohda, Toda seeks power by any means necessary and isn't above making an example of his failed minions through murder.
  • Bad Boss: Kills Motohide and his bodyguard for failing to dispose of Matsunoshin and no longer being of any use to him.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: He's the most personal foe of Lord Gohda and his longtime enemy, unfortunately for him Lady Kagami has other plans.
  • Cavalry Betrayal: After Tatsumaru defeats him, Lady Kagami appears before her wounded master. Then she slices his head off.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: He's the one pulling the strings of the initial conflict against Gohda Castle, but is eventually overthrown by his own ninja. His death marks the end of Act 1 of Tenchu 2.
  • Flunky Boss: He summons an archer and spearman before his fight with Tatsumaru, who has to defeat all three.
  • I Have Your Wife: He has Motohide abduct Princess Kiku.
  • It's All About Me: Has no interest in ruling alongside Motohide and would rather conquer Gohda's lands as sole leader.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Toda was aiding Motohide but in truth, he was playing divide and conquer.
  • Off with His Head!: Kagami chops his head off before Tatsumaru can deliver a killing blow to him.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: He kills Motohide Gohda and his bodyguard after they kidnap Kiku.

    Garan

"Ha ha ha! Dance, woman!"
Voiced by: Unknown
Leader of a gang of thieves holed up near a mountain village. Rikimaru is tasked with assassinating him in his first mission.
  • Cutscene Power to the Max: Garan is shown using throwing knives, which he does not use in actual combat.
  • Establishing Character Moment: He is introduced tormenting a hostage by tossing throwing knives at her, establishing his cruelty and ensuring that you won't feel bad about killing him.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Garan uses his opium pipe as a weapon. It blows smoke which incapacitates Rikimaru if he inhales it.
  • Jerkass: A cruel and snide man who preys on defenseless villagers.
  • Knockout Gas: Garan fights using a pipe that can emit a sleeping gas, this can get several cheap shots against Rikimaru during their fight.
