Beginning in 2016, the series started introducing more non-Mario and original characters into the cast. Within a short time they replaced most* of the Classic characters as the primary friends and foils to SMG4 and Mario.

These characters are listed below in order of first appearance.

A (former) Spike who first appears in part one of the "Seaside Stupidity" two-parter. After his debut, he made a few more appearances before finally graduating to main character status. At the end of the Lawsuit Arc, Miyamoto transforms him into a different form to stop his name being associated with Spikes. Five months later, he was redesigned again right in the announcement video for "It's Gotta Be Perfect" in response to fan complaints.

He is the first character in the series to always be fully-voiced by an actual human.note

  • Adorable Abomination: He may look like an ordinary Spike, but his father being a massive Cthulhu-like sea monster does question if he is a Spike. As of WOTFI 2022, he's definitely not a Spike anymore.
  • Ambiguously Bi:
    • Despite the fact that he has an obsession with anime girls, and the whole reason he created Saiko was because he wanted a real life waifu, in "I Can't Believe It's Not SMG4", after Bob says that the play that Mario is in reminds him of his rapping career, Boopkins says in a romantic voice "Aw, been there Bob, you'll always be a star in my eyes", Bob responds by asking Boopkins if he's gay.
    • He's also the only one who wasn't disgusted by SMG4's offer of love in "The Mario Hustle".
  • Ambiguously Spike: Boopkins used the model of a Spike for six years, but his father is a giant Cthuhlu-like sea-monster who laid an egg that turned into Boopkins' brother. Said brother looks more like a tiny bird than either Boopkins or their father, which opens up a few questions. Notably, Boopkins is rarely if ever referred to as a Spike, with the only implications beyond his appearance being him puking spike-balls. A mock nature documentary titles his species as "Fishy Boopkins". Any ambiguity is dropped after his post-WOTFI 2022 redesign.
  • And Then John Was a Zombie: He is unceremoniously caught and infected by Waluigi at the end of "Fishy Boopkins Plays VRChat".
  • Art Evolution: In response to fan backlash against his 2022 redesign, Boopkins was modified again in March 2023 right before IT'S GOTTA BE PERFECT. He now has proportions closer to his original Spike design, as well as more fish-like features such as gills. He also wears a pair of geta (or, as SMG3 calls them, "weeb shoes"), tying into his Otaku personality.
  • Badass Adorable: Fishy Boopkins is from an enemy race that looks quite cuddly and Boopkins himself is quite friendly. While he's not the strongest fighter, he can be pretty skilled with weaponry and can be crafty when the time calls for it. And if that doesn't work, he can always just call on his dad.
  • Berserk Button: Stealing his waifu body pillows is a quick way to get yourself blown up by a tank, as "War of the Fat Italians 2017" shows.
  • Big Damn Heroes: As Bowser prepares to roast Mario, Shroomy, and Bob in "Mario The Boy Scout", Fishy Boopkins crafts a rocket launcher in the nick of time and blasts him to kingdom come.
  • Break the Cutie: On the receiving end of this by Bob, who delivers a scathing Motive Rant on how set things up to boost his fame and popularity, revealing he intentionally pushed Boopkins into the well and to top it off, tells Boopkins that their friendship was fake. This drives poor Boopkins to tears.
  • Butt-Monkey: Slips into this role as time goes on, taking the brunt of insults and abuse from most of the cast. The mock nature documentary provides the the quote underneath his picture.
  • Cartoon Creature: His appearance as of WOTFI 2022. His second redesign heavily downplays this, making him more clearly fish-like in appearance and giving him a body structure similar to his original design.
  • Casting Gag: There are a few references to him being played by SMG4/Luke's brother, Kevin. The "Poppy Playtime" video has credits that say he produced the video, and he's featured in SMG4's mind acting out a Hobo Bros video with him in the place of Kevin, normal voice and all.
  • Cephalothorax: Throughout all of his designs he has had no distinction between his head and his lower body, although his WOTFI 2022 redesign leans more into Waddling Head territory by making his body smaller.
  • Characterisation Marches On: His characterization in his debut episode, "Seaside Stupidity" is slightly different from his later appearances; his voice is lower pitched, he wasn't an Otaku yet, and he possessed two powers that have rarely been seen since: the ability to make people breathe underwater, and the ability to sing while in pain.
  • Cheerful Child: He's confirmed not an adult, and very optimistic despite everything happening to him.
  • Complexity Addiction: Tries unnecessary (and ineffective) stealth against a random Mook in the Final Battle of "Wild, Wild Mario". By contrast, Bob just arrows the guy in the face and says, "Close enough."
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: His singing is so bad, it causes the Earth to explode! It also caused SMG4's head to explode. The threat of being Forced to Watch him play Roblox for ten hours in "The Mario Mafia" causes Bob (a traitor at the time) to confess everything.
  • A Day in the Limelight: "Doki Doki Mario Club" is this for Fishy Boopkins. Not only does it star him but it's surprisingly a character study on how lonely he is and how it affects him, which in most other episodes is Played for Laughs. "Mario And... The Well" is this as well.
  • Dirty Coward: During "Mario Preschool", the Shipping Police show up to try and arrest him, and in a move not out of place from Bob, he frames Meggy for the picture he drew of him and Hatsune Miku leaving her to be arrested by the Shipping Police. Granted, Fishy Boopkins does end up getting arrested too, but thinks it's because they didn't like his painting.
  • Earth-Shattering Kaboom: Can cause one with his horrible singing.
  • Eat Dirt, Cheap: He loves eating rocks - he ate at least 354 of them during his geology class in "Mario University". It's gotten to the point where he actually can't swim due to eating so many.
Boopkins: I can't seem to float anymore... oh, maybe I should go on a diet.
  • Even Nerds Have Standards: Even though he IS an anime-obsessed weeb, he is NOT willing to watch an anime that's bad.
  • Fan Disservice: His taste in anime girls ranges from legitimately cute to literally just Heavy's face on a woman's body. He's also been shown in a few poses usually reserved for Fanservice, but considering he's a Waddling Head, it looks hilariously goofy.
  • Fatal Flaw: His naive, friendly nature. Fishy Boopkins is one of the few main characters who is unambiguously nice. It's his biggest strength, as he manages to befriend characters that the others would normally never have a chance of doing so (he proves instrumental in recruiting Axol), but it's also his biggest weakness as he's a Horrible Judge of Character, which leads to him being manipulated by people (Bob), keeping company that most people would find unsavory (Saiko, Bob) or straight up repaying his kindness with evil acts (Waluigi, the Anime Cartel, Bob). For better or worse, it's his most prominent character trait aside for his love for anime.
  • Flanderization: As of "High School Mario" the anime-obsessed weaboo side of his personality has become his primary and near-only character trait – which even gets lampshaded in "We Interrupt This Broadcast…". This is sometimes reversed in cases where his naïveté is critical to the plot, such as IT'S GOTTA BE PERFECT.
  • Foil: To Bob. Both are based on enemy mooks, both are among the few characters that have use voice acting from the start (even if Bob's voice is text-to-speech). Both are The Friend Nobody Likes from the rest of the cast and are shown to be losers. The differences are that Fishy Boopkins is a Wide-Eyed Idealist who's humble, doesn't really let the abuse get to him, and is a nice person; while Bob is cynical, has a huge ego, cares deeply what other people think of him, and is a Jerkass.
  • Forgot About His Powers: In his debut appearance, Fishy Boopkins had magical powers including the power to summon other sea creatures, swallow large amounts of objects a la Pac-Man, and allow humans and Toads to breathe underwater. After that two-parter, Boopkins isn't shown to have any powers unless one counts his horrendous singing. May have given Meggy the ability to breathe underwater in "If Mario Went Fishing", and Mario has made note of this power on at least one separate occasion.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Boopkins was initially characterized as a pathetic loser who was mocked or looked down on by those around him. Fortunately, this angle was dropped relatively quickly as the series started making him Endearingly Dorky rather than an outright dork.
  • Hermaphrodite: Possibly. After getting blasted out of the school in "High School Mario", he mutters "My nuts.", despite a line in "Stupid Mario Kart" stating he had a uterus. When he was run over by Swag's tank in IT'S GOTTA BE PERFECT, he painfully whispered, "My scrotums."
  • Heroic BSoD: Falls into one after the events of "The Mario Concert". It takes Meggy taking him to a "sexy maid" cafe to snap him out of it. Even that is a temporary solution, and it carries over to the next video.
  • Hidden Depths: While his singing is awful enough to literally break people, Boopkins is an extremely proficient beatboxer. This comes in handy when the gang are trying to rescue Mario from Zero during the Tenth Anniversary Movie. He also uses his skill to help Melony when she wants to learn how to rap. Both times he worked with Bob.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Due to his desire to be friends with everyone, Boopkins is prone to this.
    • Boopkins considers Bob to be his best friend, and is willing to help him despite all the times Bob has either (a) been the cause of his own misfortune, (b) mistreated him, and (c) betrayed his trust. It comes back to bite him hard in "The Mario Concert" when Bob reveals that he never considered Boopkins his friend and that he was the one that pushed Boopkins down the well, all so he could use Boopkins' rescue as a publicity stunt to further his rap career. To be fair to Boopkins on this point, he does wise up afterwards and Bob has to really prove to him that he's changed before they're friends again.
    • In "Doki Doki Mario Club" he's ignorant at first to Saiko's true nature and even after seeing her at her worst he's very hesitant about breaking off his relationship with her until Toad and Toadette provide a demonstration of what will happen if he doesn't.
    • In "Mario and the T-Pose Virus", he greets his zombified friends and asks if they want to play Yu-Gi-Oh cards, to which they respond by painfully mobbing him and infecting him.
  • Immune to Fire: Is shown to be this in "The Floor Is Lava", where the lava actually makes him stronger. This may have been a retcon since he was shown to be hurt by fire in some of his previous appearances.
  • Irony: The Spike, what he was originally, are often shown as being enemies in desert levels. Fishy Boopkins, on the other hand, lives in the water.
  • Kid Has a Point:
    • When Meggy gets kidnapped in "The Splatfest Incident" and Axol is the prime suspect, Boopkins has a good reason to vouch for Axol's innocence. Not only does Axol have a friendly if overdramatic personality, but he wilfully helped Mario and Co. get anime unbanned while demanding nothing in return. As luck would have it, Boopkins was right.
    • From the same episode, he was the first one to stop the Civil War from progressing any further when they could be saving Meggy.
  • Last-Name Basis: Although he introduces himself with both his given and family name, no one ever calls him "Fishy" (not even Mario who actually has a voice clip of that particular word). Only "Boopkins".
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: When he sings, it destroys planets. Also, his superpower in "The Super Dudes" is releasing a shockwave when shouting.
  • Nice Guy: Sure, he's not the brightest individual and is treated just as badly as Bob, but he's one of the kinder members of the cast and is a friend that has your back (as evident in "High School Mario").
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Boopkins explicitly explaining to the Anime Cartel how Axol's Inkweaver works causes problems for the rest of the arc, now that they know how to use it.
  • Odd Friendship: With Bob and Waluigi.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • Fishy Boopkins loves his Top Wife body pillow. So when he leaves it behind while fleeing from Saiko, it shows how scared he is of her.
    • In the same vein, he's a massive Otaku. So when he's too sad to watch anime because of what Bob did, you know he's taking it hard.
    • He's best friends with Bob, going so far as to save him during "The Mario Purge" despite everyone else's objections, and thinks the world of him prior to "The Mario Concert". At the end of "Mario and The Diss Track", after Bob lost his fame and fortune and asks to enter the cafe, Boopkins simply shuts the door on him. Just goes to show how badly Bob's betrayal affected him. It takes Bob a near-death experience and announcing his retirement to fix their friendship.
  • Otaku: To put it mildly.
    • In "Doki Doki Mario Club", Fishy is revealed to have just shy of five and a half million anime body pillows.
    • This is the main reason why he brought Saiko to life via magic – to have an anime girlfriend.
    • Referenced by SMG3 as Boopkins's second redesign gives him a pair of geta (traditional Japanese wooden sandals). SMG3 calls them "Weeb Shoes" and then says Boopkins trying to correct him proves his point.
  • Papa Wolf: He has one that is a mix of Cthulhu and Octodad.
  • Pie-Eyed: His second redesign in Spring 2023 changes his pupils from perfectly-round black dots to having a "slice" taken out of them. Notably he is the only character with this trait.
  • Playing with Fire: He gains these abilities after falling in the lava in "The Floor Is Lava".
  • Rousing Speech: Gives one to Luigi in "High School Mario". He tries to do this again in IT'S GOTTA BE PERFECT but fails miserably and gets run over by a tank as a result.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Sensitive Guy to Bob's Manly Man.
  • Tareme Eyes: Sports these quite a few times when imitating anime, and they look just how you expect them to.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Originally, Fishy Boopkins was a character who had no friends and was considered an annoyance by everyone else. Cut to recent videos however, and he has quite a number of friends, including the likes of Luigi, Bob, and Meggy. Even characters that don't like Fishy Boopkins such as SMG4 and Mario have been a lot less hostile towards him.
  • Those Two Guys: He and Bob are best friends. That friendship temporarily ended during the Rapper Bob Arc, but they make up just in time for Christmas. Post-2018, Boopkins will sometimes join Bob in rapping due to being an excellent beatboxer.
  • Token Heroic Orc: Boopkins is a friendly member of an enemy race (more specifically the Spikes) in the Mario series.
  • Top Wife: He has many waifus, but the one he seems to mention and pair himself with the most often is Hatsune Miku.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Mostly due to his innocent naive nature rather than actual stupidity. His strong belief in The Power of Friendship usually backfires on him, and he's often an early victim to the Big Bad of the day/arc.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Rocks… for some reason.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom:
    • Boopkins gives Waluigi the idea of trying to get into Smash Bros Ultimate, which had him discover the Power Of Rejection, getting rejected from Smash Bros and starting the T-Pose Virus.
    • Boopkins explicitly explaining to the Anime Cartel how Axol's pen works gives them the idea to kidnap almost every Inkling in Inkopolis, as well as Axol himself, so Francis can have all the waifus he wants.
  • Waddling Head: His 2022 redesign removes his lower body, essentially making him a head with short-stubby limbs.
  • Vocal Evolution: His voice was a bit deeper in his first episode. It's most noticeable in "Deleted", where the present-day Boopkins goes back in time and meets his younger self.

    Bob Bobowski

Bob Bobowski

Voiced by: WillFromAfar, WillUpClose (when whispering)
First appearance: "Can Ganondorf come out to play?" (2016)

"Ow! My ovaries!"
Click here to see his old Garo design

A sewer wizard that formerly used a Garo model from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. He's obsessed with fame, money and getting the most screentime in his appearances. Despite his humorous Butt-Monkey status, Bob has proven he can be a downright repulsive, self-admitted bastard if he isn't given the attention he wants. At the end of the Lawsuit Arc, Miyamoto transforms him into a different form that looks less like a Garo to stop his name being associated with them.

  • Abusive Parents: He mentioned that his parents didn't love him in "The Corn Trip". He elaborated in a throwaway line in "To Become A God" that his dad abandoned him as a child.
  • Alliterative Name: Bob Bobowski.
  • Ambiguously Bi: While he is definitely attracted to women, he says Watermelon-kun gives him a boner.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Despite clearly identifying as male, pain often results in this quote...
    Bob: "Ow my ovaries!"
  • Ascended Extra: Goes from that one random guy who begs to be in SMG4's videos to a member of the main cast.
  • Attention Whore: He's constantly doing things to get attention, such as refusing to let Mario, SMG4, and Toad into DIDNEY WORL unless SMG4 makes him the main character of the videos, and interrupting a rap battle between Mario and SMG4 to shill his social media accounts. Exaggerated after his rap career takes off.
  • Badasses Wear Bandanas: His non-Garo redesign adds an orange and yellow bandana to his design, which he quickly grows attached to.
  • Berserk Button: Rats are the one thing that will make him shed all cowardice and go full-on Blood Knight, and while he reluctantly disposes of them non-lethally in "The Infestation", he generally won't stop until he every last one has been fatally squashed. This hatred stems from a large swarm of rats attacking him 5000 years ago.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Manages to take out all but one of the entire Fighting Polygon Team with almost no effort on his part in "The Smash 5 Trials".
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Mario and Shroomy get surrounded by the Eagle Scouts in "Mario The Boy Scout", he pops out of nowhere to craft a shield from a pile of wood and use it to deflect the Eagles' attacks.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: His redesign can look adorable as heck, or even laughable to some, but if one sees his personality...
  • Blade Spam: In "Mario The Boy Scout", this is how Bob carves stuff out of wood. And how he does haircuts, much to Mario and SMG4's terror.
Bob: Check this Naruto shit out.
  • Break Him By Talking: Delivers one to Fishy Boopkins, in which he reveals that he faked his friendship with Boopkins, intentionally pushing him into the well in order to "play hero" and boost his SoundCloud, then organizing the events of "Mario and the Bob Mansion", all to boost his popularity. After saying this to Boopkins's face, he then calls Boopkins a pushover and abandons him in the alleyway.
  • Bullying a Dragon:
    • His attempt at telling a joke to Gobbles the Gargoyle in "MARIO'S CHALLENGE" amounts to calling him "a giant stone douchebag." Naturally, Bob gets squished.
Bob: Laughing my ass off that was hilarious.
    • "Mario and The Diss Track" has him make the titular diss track about most of the characters. They team up and get revenge, the end result sending Bob back where he started, without fame.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: After breaking Boopkins by talking and admitting he had engineered the events of "Mario and the Well" and "Mario and the Bob Mansion" in order to finally gain fame and recognition for his rap career (which Boopkins unwittingly ruined), he flat out admits he's a repugnant asshole. He justifies it though by proclaiming that "it's either be an asshole or a pushover, a Bob or Boopkins", showing that he believes one has to be a despicable individual in order to get by in life. However, following "Mario and the Diss Track", after being called out for his actions in a song, and a near death experience, Bob sheds this, pulling a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Character Catchphrase: He exclaims “Ow my ovaries!” whenever he gets hurt, which is quite a frequent occurrence.
  • Characterization Marches On: In his early appearances, Bob was portrayed as being an Abhorrent Admirer of SMG4, obssessed with trying to become a main character and having a dimmer and goofier personality. Once he did become a main character, these traits were phased out and he evolved into the hedonistic Jerk with a Heart of Gold we know today.
  • The Chew Toy: Most of his screen time consists of him being abused or ignored by everyone else. Not that it isn't at all unwarranted.
  • Cold Ham: Despite his Synthetic Voice Actor, his dialogue still manages to Chew the Scenery.
  • Compressed Hair: In "The Mario Carnival", Bob is revealed to be hiding a massive afro underneath his hood, though we only get to see it through his shadow.
  • Con Man: Tried to sell rocks as a cure for broken legs and runs a rigged carnival, among other things.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: As the Arc Villain of SMG4's second story arc, Bob is different from the first one in just about every way. The most basic difference is that one has supernatural powers, while the other doesn't, but a better way to describe this would be that Waluigi's Power of Rejection is considered a physical attack, while Bob uses emotional and psychological attacks (harsh speeches and diss tracks) to get what he wants. Their goals differ as well. Waluigi wants everyone to know his suffering, but Bob just wants fame. More importantly is how they treat their friends and relatives. Wario is the one person who cared for Waluigi, a fact that stops Waluigi's rejection-fuelled rage, while Bob manipulated and hurt his closest friends in his desire for fame. Finally, Waluigi is forgiven by everyone despite all the destruction he caused, while Bob's friends are still mad at him for how he hurt them, forcing him to make an actual effort to make up for his wrongdoings.
  • Dirty Coward: In "Mario and the T-Pose Virus", he chooses to flee from the T-Pose Zombie horde and leaves Mario and Luigi to their mercy, going so far as to barricade the door to the roof, which leads to Luigi being infected. Bob immediately pays for his selfishness and cowardice when a rip-roaringly pissed off Mario proceeds to literally kick him off the roof.
  • Dreadful Musician: In his earliest appearances, his rapping was awful, even making people's heads explode. Later episodes avert this to an extent; he even has his own rapping career (albeit one made on lies and dog-kicking). He decides to retire his rap career in "SMG4 Christmas 2018".
    • Averted in "Mario Reacts to Nintendo Memes 9" where Bob's rapping to woo Cursed Peach could be seen as genuinely good, though creepy. His rapping is also decent in "The Pursuit Of Happiness".
    • "The Infestation" shows another aversion: He's an extremely good flute (specifically recorder or ocarina) player, which allowed him to subdue an army of rats and get them out of SMG4's basement.
  • Engineered Heroics: "The Mario Concert" reveals that his rescuing Boopkins from the well was this as a ploy to gain popularity; in fact, Bob was the one who pushed Fishy down the well in the first place.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Despite his selfish tendencies and penchant for switching sides, even Bob does not want to work with Francis. In the second half of the Anime Arc, he helped the gang rescue Meggy, Axol, and the other Inklings and never wavered on it.
    • While he's no stranger to making threats, in the Friday Night Funkin' episode, Bob's reaction to Lemon Demon's "lyrics" about torture and cannibalism is to stop the rap battle and call him out on the content, which even the Lemon Demon admits is messed up. It doesn't stop Bob from bullying the Lemon Demon into a coma.
    • Not even he could tolerate Mario turning everyone into NFTs, resulting in him regretting how he taught him how to turn more people into NFTs and deciding to stop him alongside Tari.
Bob: (to Mario) "You're only supposed to do it to people you hate!"
  • Fatal Flaw: His desire for fame. Bob desperately craves approval and attention from others, and will do anything to get it, even if it means doing morally dubious actions like betraying his friends or engineering events so he can look good. Even when he does get recognition, his unquenchable thirst for more usually leads to him ruining whatever good he has going for him in the first place.
  • Female Groin Invincibility: Played with. Bob identifies as male but when he's hit he usually shouts "Ow, my ovaries!" At least once, he managed to tank a kick to the crotch from Saiko because of it.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: With Swagmaster69696969696 during "World War Mario", this is solidified in "Final Hours" where Bob and the guards save his friends from an army of False Sephiroths.
  • Foil: To Fishy Boopkins. Both are based on enemy mooks, both are among the few characters that use voice acting (even if Bob's voice is text-to-speech). Both are The Friend Nobody Likes from the rest the cast and are shown to be losers. But the differences is Bob is cynical, has a huge ego, cares deeply what other people think of him, isn't afraid to betray them at the drop of a hat, and is a Jerkass, while Fishy Boopkins is a Wide-Eyed Idealist who doesn't really let the abuse get to him, is fiercely loyal to the friends he does have, and is a nice person.
  • For Want Of A Nail: The Anime Arc started all because Bob unleashed a Kamehameha that destroyed half of Peach's castle, and his shifting of blame ("Um, uh...Goku did it!") is the first of a few isolated incidents that leads to Peach banning anime in the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • Freudian Excuse:
    • It's implied that his Attention Whore nature is invoked by his loneliness for centuries.
    • In "The Corn Trip" and elsewhere, he mentions that even his parents didn't like him.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: "Friend" might be a stretch, but he has become a member of the main cast. Most of the cast can't seem to stand him (except possibly Tari and Fishy BoopkinsMeggy has been burned by him too many times to fully trust him).
  • Good Feels Good: After rescuing Boopkins from a well, he comments on how good it feels to be liked.
  • Greed: During the Rapper Bob Arc, he betrays his friends for fame and money.
  • Heel Realization: It takes a near-death experience, but Bob realizes friends are the most important thing to him, and decides to retire his rap career and make up with the rest of the cast.
  • Hermaphrodite: Bob has ovaries (which tend to be hit whenever slapstick occurs to him), but he's also mentioned his balls on a few occasions.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Bob is a complete Jerkass, but it's implied he has some respect for Satoru Iwata. In "The Splatfest Incident", we see a picture of "Iwata" (really just a joke picture of Hideo Kojima) inside Bob's locker.
    • Despite being Book Dumb in almost every way, "Mario University" reveals Bob is an expert in garbology (the study of garbage). In just a day of a Garbology class in university, he manages to both earn a degree and take over for the teacher.
  • Hypocrite: Despite Bob wanting to have friends and fame, he sure doesn't mind betraying people who actually bother to let him into their group ("Mario Mafia") or even people he's teaming up with and actually bothering to help him ("Mario Battle Royale"). This bites him in the ass come "Mario and The Diss Track", when Saiko, having been told what Bob did and how Boopkins was affected, makes a popular song about it alongside the others. Bob essentially lost his fame because of his backstabbing tendencies.
  • I Call Him "Mister Happy": If SMG4 Crew is to be believed, Bob's named his individual balls.
Left one's Steve, Right one's Paul.
  • I Have Your Wife: In "Who Let the Chomp Out Again?", he forces Fishy Boopkins to do increasingly dangerous pet show stunts by threatening to kill his "wife" (a Hatsune Miku body pillow) if he refuses.
  • It's All About Me: Eeeeeeeyup. It's always about Bob and never about anyone else.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: That said, he has done some heroic things such as rescue Fishy Boopkins from a well instead of leaving him there. He also plays a major role in defeating Francis. And, as mentioned in Took a Level in Kindness, he's become far more heroic, if still somewhat jerkish. One such perfect instance of said heroism is The Corn Trip, where he wins Rob's truck back from a casino and helps him finish his corn delivery.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Bob's Jerkass tendencies sometimes drive him into this. For example, him rescuing Boopkins, as mentioned above? He was the one who kicked Boopkins into the well in the first place, making his "rescue" part of an elaborate attempt to gain popularity.
  • Kick the Dog: Has done this plenty of times, all to feed his ego. He delivers an especially nasty one to Fishy Boopkins in "The Mario Concert", which sends Fishy into a Heroic BSoD.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: His stand-up jokes from "DerpTV: Mushroom Kingdom's Got Talent", which causes SMG4 to attempt to smother him.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: When he's being a Jerkass, he's on the receiving end. He receives an especially large dose of this in "Mario and The Diss Track" when after berating and back-stabbing Boopkins in order to gain fame, he loses it when Saiko and the rest of the main cast, who Bob dissed for no reason other than he could, team up and sing a epic song about what Bob has done and how despicable he is. Bob subsequently loses his fortune, fans and friends, and the episode ends with Boopkins shutting the door on him.
  • Leitmotif: This high quality rip of the potion shop theme from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
  • Long-Lived: "The Infestation" reveals that he's been alive since the Dark Ages, making him at least 5000 years old.
  • Loveable Sex Maniac: Peeks on women in the shower (though it turns out to be Tinky Winky) and likes watching... mature anime. Oh, and watches porn on the internet.
Bob: "Bring on the 2-dimensional boobies!"
  • The Millstone: Even when he's not actively trying to screw over his teammates via double-crossing, the mere fact that Bob is on your team is usually a poor bet for success due to his stupidity and self-centeredness.
  • Mood Killer: Similar to Mario, but normally to a more insensitive degree.
  • Morality Pet:
  • Narcissist: Most certainly, but ever since "The Most Important Thing", it's become Downplayed.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: "The Demon Among Us" has him release Anti-Shroomy, Shroomy's Superpowered Evil Side, by merely scaring the scout with a demon mask (though to be fair, he probably didn't know). He gets locked in a cage alongside the other main characters for his troubles, where Saiko lashes at him for kick-starting the plot.
  • The Nicknamer: Has called SMG4 "Super Meme Generator 4" and "Smushy Mario Goopy 4".
  • Ninja: Well no duh, he is an ex-Garo. That and, well, he has blade hands. Plus, when the episode calls for it, Bob can be a surprisingly effective fighter.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Bob out-and-out weaponized the trope in order to get famous. All of his seemingly stupid decisions in "Mario and the Bob Mansion" (replacing fire extinguishers with flamethrowers, labelling gasoline as "Bob Juice", sending Meggy to cook knowing full well how bad she was) were part of a plan to create a sob story to boost his popularity.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Rob stops Mario and Luigi from meeting his past self in "Deleted", his reaction before disappearing?
  • Painting the Medium: He usually doesn't have subtitles, but when he does (usually during musical numbers), they're written in the Papyrus font.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: He is the main source of humor in the Darker and Edgier Anime Arc.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Not a full-blown villain, but he does diss both Meggy and Tari for being female, and with the latter he proclaimed that he'll win their game. He loses. He disses them again in "Mario and The Diss Track" via the titular track.
  • Really 700 Years Old: In his first appearance he claims to not have seen anyone in 500 years. In "The Infestation" he's shown to have been in the same sewer 5000 years earlier. However, in "Mario Babies", he claimed to have been bullied by Wario and Waluigi, but this may have been an attempt to gain sympathy or tell a story that wasn't as boring as his actual origin.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Rarely, if made sufficiently angry, his eyes will go from their standard greenish colour to a bright red.
  • Repetitive Name: Bob Bobowski.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: In "The Mario Mafia", he tells Bowser where Mario's base is, since they were having a feud at the time. Not only does he get cheated out of his money, Mario forces him to watch Fishy Boopkins playing Roblox for ten hours. Happens again in "Mario Battle Royale", after kicking Fishy Boopkins off a cliff. He runs into Toad's Kaiju-sized robot and gets killed.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Manly Man to Boopkins' Sensitive Guy.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!:
Bob: You're either an asshole or a pushover. A Bob or a Boopkins, and I sure as hell don't want to be a Boopkins.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: He has quite the potty mouth, cursing more than any other recurring character. He says in "I Can't Believe It's Not SMG4!" that if he stated his opinion in response to Mario's audition for a play, SMG4 would be cancelled.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: Sometimes goes into this, which is rather jarring compared to his usual way of speaking.
Bob: In my world, mercy doesn't exist.
  • Synthetic Voice Actor: He's voiced by Voiceforge's "Will From Afar".
  • Tank Goodness: Pilots a tank alongside Chris and Swagmaster when facing an army of Sephiroths.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Was mostly this before officially joining the main cast.
  • This Is for Emphasis, Bitch!: He just can't let go of the b-word.
  • Those Two Guys: He and Fishy Boopkins are best friends… except for that time in 2018 they weren't.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Since his first appearance, he's often treated as The Friend Nobody Likes and The Thing That Would Not Leave. Also, anything he makes is trashy and unpopular. After the events of "Mario And... The Well" when he saved Fishy Boopkins from the titular well, his good deed gets rewarded; his SoundCloud receives dozens of followers and he has enough money to buy a mansion. It's then revealed he masterminded it all to have it happen to him, but later gives it all up along with his rapping career to reform after the end of his arc.
  • Token Heroic Orc: Like Fishy Boopkins, he is a member of an enemy race from Zelda known as the Garo. Though the "heroic" bit isn't entirely accurate.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Throughout 2017-2018, he becomes more hostile and aggressive in his attempts to get fame to become friends with everyone. It comes to a head in the Rapper Bob Arc where he kicks Boopkins down a well, tricks his friends into destroying his house and then using such acts to gain sympathy so he can become famous.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After his Heel Realization, he's been progressively cast in a more heroic manner and tends to make himself more useful whenever he has screentime. He also seems to get along better with the other main characters, and while his insults and Attention Whore tendencies are still there, they've been dialed back to a more tolerable level.
  • True Companions: With Rob The Scarecrow, as Bob and Rob's friendship in "The Corn Trip" was almost completely positive, you could say that they're BFFs.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: As a kid, he walked up to some other children hoping to be their friend. Unfortunately, those children were Wario and Waluigi. One Humiliation Conga and talk with Small Smoke later, and he's chasing them around with swords for arms.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Did this in no fewer than three different arcs…
    • He kicked Boopkins down the well in the Rapper Bob Arc, thus causing his rise in fame.
    • He blew up Peach's castle and blamed it on Goku, causing her to ban anime and kickstarting that arc.
    • He refused to renew the antivirus on SMG3's USB Guardian Pod in the Genesis Arc, not realizing it was the one containing Zero (he thought he'd found SMG1's USB), allowing Zero to escape.
  • The Vietnam Vet: Claims to have taken part in The Vietnam War during “The Mario Mafia”.
  • Vocal Evolution: Yes, they managed to accomplish this with a Synthetic Voice Actor. Watch his earlier videos and you'll find that he speaks slower than he does nowadays.
  • With Friends Like These...:
    • Disregarding his Butt-Monkey status, Bob's not the type you'd depend on, to say the least. Thankfully, after his arc, he begins to tone it down and, as a result, gets along with the cast better, even if his behavior remains the same.
    • The Youtube Arc also gives him a taste of this in the form of Rob, whom Bob befriended and who, on SMG3's order, went back to Bob's debut video and prevented from meeting Mario and Luigi, thus wiping him from existence and sending him to the Internet Graveyard.

Click here to see her as an Inkling

A female Inkling that Mario found stuck in a paint bucket, causing her to run amok and flee into a manhole that leads to Inkopolis, taking Mario along with her. She originally competed in Turf War tournaments with her team, the SplatSquad, but a series of events eventually resulted in her permanent transformation into a human. She was very popular in her debut episode and quickly became the series' biggest Breakout Character, becoming a series regular after returning for "MARIO'S CHALLENGE" and eventually the full-on Deuteragonist of the modern era.

See here for her tropes during her time at Port Aurora.

  • Aborted Arc: After winning Splatfest in early 2020, Meggy tried a series of jobs. The one that showed the most promise was being a police officer, but it was never followed up on for reasons still unexplained, though fans have speculated it might have something to do with the backlash against police brutality happening in the USA at the time. The series managed to lampshade this in 2021 by showing a chalkboard in her home listing the many jobs she tried. All were marked through ("Chef" was crossed out twice because, well…)
  • Absurd Phobia: Meggy is flat-out terrified of anime. "Mario Saves Anime" reveals that all Inklings hate anime and Meggy's phobia runs in her DNA.
  • The Ace: Strongly established as such in-universe and out of it and is classified as an A-tier in strength. Even Mario sees her as this.
  • Action Girl: Naturally, since she comes from the world of Splatoon. Sometimes averted, depending on the video.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Frequently calls Mario 'Red', ever since they met on her Splatfest team.
  • Affirmative Action Girl: The first new female character to become a regular.
  • And Then What?: Throughout most of her time on the show, Meggy was fixated on winning Splatfest, to the extent that she never really asked herself what she'd do with her life after finally doing so. As a result, with Splatfest being cancelled due to lack of budget, she's been left directionless, looking for various jobs in the Mushroom Kingdom since Inkopolis no longer has a place for her.
  • Animation Bump: She and some of the other Inklings have very noticeably advanced character movements and animations compared to Mario and other SMG4 staples. Even as a human she's usually animated more fluidly than most other members of the cast, unless animating her poorly is funnier.
  • Art Evolution: Her human form received a new higher-quality model as of IT'S GOTTA BE PERFECT.
  • Ax-Crazy: Downplayed compared to some of the other characters, but it's there. Mostly when she's shooting things.
  • Badass Adorable: Cooler and cuter than even the average Inkling. Even being turned into a human doesn't stop her from kicking all sorts of ass.
  • Badass in Distress:
    • In "Wild, Wild Mario", she gets surprised and captured by Donkey Kong. When Mario causes a distraction, Meggy frees herself by kicking the gorilla square in the groin.
    • Becomes this in "The Splatfest Incident", where she is kidnapped by Francis and the Anime Cartel.
    • The Penguin Mom in "Little Penguin Lost" unwittingly kidnaps Meggy, mistaking her for her child.
    • She has it really bad in WESTERN SPAGHETTI. After the reveal that Oneshot Wren was the one who trapped everyone in a simulation, he constantly torments Meggy by repeatedly killing her and resetting the day for an entire month. No one else is aware of this except for Tari, and by the time Tari managed to build a safe zone Meggy's so traumatized she is initially unable to trust anyone.
  • Badass Normal: As a human, she's just as capable of an Action Girl as before despite losing her squid form. Even as an Inkling, she very rarely used her squid form, and there was nothing she could do that a typical Inkling also couldn't do. Regardless, she remains a force to be reckoned with because her athleticism and combat skills are just THAT good.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Do not lie to her or try to con her. Wario found this out the hard way.
    • Another is utterly failing to speak her language. Mario received a chair to the face for that. Ultimately subverted in later instances as the most she does is just get visibly annoyed by who is doing it.
    • Dissing her skills is another one. Same with her voice.
    • Making fun of her small heightnote . SMG4 ended up barbequed by her and Saiko, who had also been made fun of by the same guy for her overly tall height.
    • Do not disrespect One-Shot Wren in her presence, whether that be through stealing the beanie he gave her, or defacing his statue. Of course, this was all before she finds out what he's really like.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's a nice person, but if her Berserk Button gets pressed, watch out.
  • Big "NO!": She lets out an extremely anguished one seconds after Desti is impaled from behind by Sephiroth.
  • Black Comedy Cannibalism: Played for Laughs. Meggy has eaten squid, even though she used to be one. That event became this trope when, after a fan asked her about it, she realized the implications.
    • Note that real squid are strict carnivores and, depending on species, gladly eat other squid.
  • Boots of Toughness: Inkling or human, a big pair of boots is a constant in her character designs, and she's a sporty, steadfast Action Girl.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: "That's very illegal" is one of her voice clips. No guesses as to who she got it from.
  • Breakout Character: One of the best-known examples in the series. Meggy proved so popular upon her debut that she quickly became a major character, as well as having the most Character Development in the cast, becoming the first character that isn’t Mario or SMG4 to be The Hero of a season, and even getting her own spin-off. Her new human design also allows her to do things for the channel that Mario himself can't legally do, like Q&A's, merchandise, and the aforementioned spin-off.
  • Break the Badass: To put it bluntly, Meggy had it rough in the Anime Arc.
    • When she was training her friends for Splatfest in "Meggy's Bootcamp", she was being way too hard on them, letting her insecurities and desire to win get the better of her. She feels so bad about going overboard that she breaks down in tears in front of everyone – the very first time she cried genuine tears. Her friends forgive her and encourage her to keep training them, and her nicer training session was a success – then her rival Desti steals her weapons from her.
    • After her weapons were retrieved, she was ready to finally conquer Splatfest. But her plans get interrupted when she gets kidnapped by Francis, who intended to use her and all the other Inklings he'd kidnapped to create an army of waifus. This process involved putting her in a machine that would drain her ink, slowly and painfully killing her. Even after she was finally saved from the machine, she was still very weak.
    • Worst of all, she had to watch Desti get impaled in "World War Mario". Meggy's rival had not only gotten closer to Mario and Co., but she also fought tooth and nail to take Francis down and rescue her rival. She was even starting to bond with Meggy too, even believing she will be a champion, only to get murdered for her troubles. In addition, Meggy feels responsible for Desti's death, and at her funeral, breaks down in tears a second time. That, and the fact that she's permanently stuck in a human body.
  • Briefer Than They Think: Meggy's time in-series as an Inkling. She debuted July 15th 2017. Her permanent change into a human occurred on June 8th 2019.* That's 694 days inclusive, or one week shy of 23 months. For comparison, another milestone for her character – graduating college – happened four years after her transformation, almost to the day.
  • Broken Ace:
    • Meggy was initially portrayed as someone who succeeds in almost everything she does. Even her flaws of being unable to swim and cook were mostly downplayed (all Inklings cannot swim and her cooking skills weren't helped by Mario being her first teacher). However, "Meggy's Bootcamp" reveals that despite her natural talent, she still hasn't won a single Splatfest and she's extremely self-conscious of that. She subsequently takes her frustrations out on her friends whenever the time to train for Splatfest arrives, which makes her feel even worse as she fears that she might drive them away for good.
    • Made even worse at the end of "Final Hours" during Desti's funeral, where she feels if she'd been better, her rival wouldn't have been killed - shortly after saying this, she breaks down in tears. Even a full month after the funeral, she still can't get over her grief and tries bottling it all up, which goes as expected and reveals her inability to move on from Desti's death.
  • Can't Live with Them, Can't Live Without Them:
    • Her rival Desti drove her crazy every chance she got, but after Desti's death, Meggy never stopped thinking about her. The trailer for Meggy's Destiny shows she still looks fondly on their battles together.
    • She also exhibits this attitude with Mario to an extent. While they often drive each other bonkers, we're shown times where they simply hang out together without any chaos. The mere threat of being separated from Mario by Nintendo caused her to overreact violently and set the entire Lawsuit Arc in motion.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Woomy!" and "That's very illegal."
  • Character Blog: She had livestreams on the SMG4 channel, which started during her time away from the show and continued even after her return. They stopped at the end of 2021 (not coincidentally around the same time Lizzie stopped recording new lines for Meggy) and have not as of this edit resumed under Elsie.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Isn't above Groin Attacks and Sneak Attacks.
  • Commuting on a Bus: She left for her spinoff series in "My New Adventure…", but still made occasional appearances in the episodes that followed to touch base with the gang through phone calls and video chats. She returns after her series finale.
  • Companion Cube: Her cat, Loaf, seen in a few episodes. While explicitly stated to be alive, it never moves or does much of anything.
  • Competition Freak: Especially when it comes to Splatfests, or any kind of shooting competition.
  • Cool Car: Drives one shaped like a Splatoon squid.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: When in position of being a shooter of any kind with any kind of gun, she is quite powerful. However, when she has to do something else like cooking, vertical platforming with far platforms, stealth, or swimming, then her flaws become more prevalent. Although to be fair, her ability to not swim is shared with all other Inklings.
  • Crusading Lawyer: Sure, it was just a college exam, but the fact that she not only defended Mario of all people, but managed to catch the real culprit shows that you definitely want Meggy on your side. She also managed to defend and save Mario's life from the Chungus tribe. Later, she saved the entire SMG4 universe from deletion by Nintendo by presenting a successful Fair Use defense in court.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Unlike Mario's other subordinates in "The Mario Mafia", she's completely unafraid of his Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique; she just rolls her eyes in boredom and asks if she can go home.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: She and Tari start out as rivals in "The Mario Carnival", but when Tari shows off her Improbable Aiming Skills and destroys Meggy in a shooting contest, Meggy is amazed and they instantly become friends.
  • Designated Girl Fight: With Wendy O'Koopa in "The Mario Mafia". Naturally, Meggy wins.
    • Battles against Tari in "The Mario Carnival" in a shooting competition.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Revealed to be this as of "The Intruder…". After finally winning Splatfest, Meggy, having never considered what to do with her life afterward, was left directionless and coasting through different odd jobs. This eventually leads to her going on vacation to sort herself out.
  • Determinator: Knock her down, she gets back up again ready to conquer any challenges that come her way. Desti notes that this trait is why she chose Meggy as her rival in the first place.
  • Deuteragonist: Took the role from Luigi after her debut in 2017, appearing more and more, effectively becoming one of the channel’s mascots, as well as the first ever character who isn’t Mario or SMG4 to be the main protagonist of a season. By 2023, she's fourth behind Mario, SMG4, and Luigi in number of thumbnails she features on (just ahead of Bowser).
  • Don't Make Me Destroy You: "Don't make me kick your ass" is one of her English voice clips.
  • The Dragon: Appears to be Don Mario's bodyguard and main lieutenant in "The Mario Mafia".
  • Dreadful Musician: Bob compares her voice to "screeching metal". Then again, it's Bob, so his comment should be taken with a grain of salt. Thankfully subverted once Meggy got her human voice.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Turns into this in the aptly titled "Meggy's Bootcamp", putting Mario, Luigi, and Tari through Training from Hell during her obsession with winning Splatfest. She drops it after realizing how awful she is being to her friends, taking on a more supportive role instead.
  • Equippable Ally: She unwillingly serves as Mario's via his "SUPER MEGGY BAT" wherein he picks her up by the ankles as she freezes from shock and he swings her into enemies.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Though an Action Girl through and through, she doesn't always resort to violence. In "Mario and the Diss Track", when Mario suggests smashing Bob with a baseball bat for making the particular diss track, Meggy gives him an unimpressed look. Twice.
    • Despite her phobia of anime, she supports overturning the anime ban once she learns that Saiko isn't legally allowed back into the Mushroom Kingdom because of it.
    • While playing cops and robbers with Meggy and Tari in "A Day in the Life of Everyone", Saiko goes crazy with her weapon, trashing everything in Meggy's apartment. Meggy – who is quite a Trigger-Happy Gun Nut herself – asks Saiko to stop.
  • Excessive Mourning: "There's Something Up With Meggy…" shows she's been grieving for Desti a full month after her death, and she undergoes Sanity Slippage trying to keep her emotions bottled up. However, she manages to deal with her grief more healthily after finally opening up to her friends about it, and fully moves on from it in Meggy's Destiny.
  • Fainting:
  • Fake Shemp:
    • As an Inkling, she sometimes used Callie and Marie's voice clips for the sake of variety, and those of the Octoling enemies from the first game. "Meggy's Bootcamp" has Pearl's clips thrown in too.
    • Through Lizzie Freeman's tenure voicing the character, Meggy's dialogue usually consisted of a couple dozen prerecorded dialogue clips except on special occasions (WOTFI's and other major episodes). Even after Lizzie stepped down from the role in May 2022 to make way for Elsie Lovelock ("DO NOT ENTER" onwards), her voice clips continued to be used for several months – the two actresses sound almost identical so it's difficult to tell.
    • Beginning with "Mario Does Japanese Game Shows", Lovelock has recorded her own stock vocals for episodes where Meggy doesn't play a big role.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • Her eagerness has led her to take out a target with brute force and overwhelming firepower. Of course, now she's just revealed herself to the enemies. This bites her in "Final Fantasy Mario" when it leads to the alarms being set off and alerting the entire base to her, Mario, and SMG4's presence.
    • Her competitive spirit often causes her to become overzealous when it comes to training, which usually leads to trouble whenever she ropes her friends into joining her. Meggy often pushes her teammates way too hard and is extremely harsh when they fail to meet her personal high standards. "Meggy's Bootcamp" reveals that this overly competitive desire stems from her self-esteem being damaged by her failures in the Splatfests, and her guilt over treating her friends like crap only makes her feel worse.
    • She keeps her real emotions hidden behind a confident mask, bottling all of them up. When her suppressed emotions become too much to handle she lashes out at anyone nearby, which only makes her undergo Heroic Self-Deprecation, which she tries to hide by bottling her emotions up. "Meggy's Bootcamp" and "There's Something Up With Meggy…" show the effects of this, with Meggy having a Heel Realization in both episodes before running away and when confronted, breaking down in tears or shutting down entirely.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: She starts out wanting nothing to do with Mario, only giving the bumbling plumber the time of day because he accidentally incapacitated Heavy Squid and she needed a fourth team member. When Mario proves to be much more dependable and kind than he initially seemed, they became friends.
    • Has one with Tari, though it wasn't until the latter showcased her impressive skills that she befriended her.
  • Fiery Redhead: Boy is she ever, and it only escalated after becoming human.
  • Forgot About Her Powers: When she was still an Inkling, she was rarely seen in her squid form.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Mixed with a dash of irony, Meggy's transformation into a human was hinted throughout the Anime Arc, most notably a Five-Second Foreshadowing in "Final Hours" when Ultra-Instinct Shaggy, on SMG4's order, saved all the Inklings from Francis's doomed island, but Meggy wasn't among them (i.e. she wasn't an Inkling anymore). He then specifically tells Shaggy to rescue her.
      • The "SSENMODNAR: 3 Million Sub Fan Collab Special"note  features a skit where every character became animesque-styled, with Meggy being the horrified one.
      • In "Meggy's Bootcamp", Meggy claimed that two years of constant failures in Splatfest caused her to "lose sight of herself". At the end of Final Hours, she literally became a different species.
    • In "Mario Gets WOKE", one of Mario's pranks with YouTube Remote is making Meggy speak English and Japanese. At the end of "War of the Fat Italians 2020", she gains a permanent English voice.
  • Girls with Guns: Often seen wielding a Splattershot as her weapon.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: She's always wearing a pair of goggles, but they don't really do anything useful. In "Meggy Answers Your Questions" she reveals that she's never actually used them to protect her face and mostly wears them to look cool. This is one of the few things faithful to Splatoon canon, where the goggles are just a stat-buff, just like her other two pieces of headgear.
  • Graceful Loser: Even though she takes competition very seriously and is often a Sore Loser, there are times where she takes losing in stride, as we've seen in "The Xmas Discovery" and "The Mario Carnival".
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: As noted above, she's the "body" during fights whenever Mario feels like it. He almost never uses anyone else. SMG4 also used her once during the Lawsuit Arc.
  • Gun Nut: To say she goes a little gun-crazy would be an understatement.
  • The Hero: She ends up being the first ever character that isn’t SMG4 or Mario to have this role in a season, specifically being the main protagonist of Season 9, thanks to her heavy influence over the season, appearing in almost every episode, and her status as the main protagonist of the season’s arc. She later shares the role with Mario, SMG4, SMG3 and Tari in Season 13, in particular sharing the role with Tari during the Western Spaghetti plotline.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • Enters one whenever the topic of anime is brought up. Probably because she's reminded of being forced to watch anime in "Mario Waits For Pizza". This is later revealed to be because Inklings have an innate fear/hatred of anime.
    • After realizing what a jerk she was being to her friends in "Meggy's Bootcamp", she sulks away to be by herself, and has a complete emotional breakdown when Mario gets her to open up about her fear of driving her friends away in her obsession to win the Splatfest. Thanks to her friends' support, she comes out of it.
    • In "There's Something Up With Meggy…", after going through various stages of grief, she finally breaks down when she's reminded of Desti's demise a month earlier. Mario, Luigi, and Tari manage to snap her out of it by convincing Meggy to live life to its fullest for Desti.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Twice, but both downplayed as she doesn't actually die. She pushes Mario out of the way of an exploding T-Pose Mushroom thrown by Waluigi in "The Mario Convention". She was also willing to sacrifice her ink to save her friends in "Final Hours".
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Views herself as a disappointment after spending two years in a row without winning a single Splatfest despite all her hard training, and feels undeserving of her friends for taking her frustrations out on them during training. Goes through this again during Desti's funeral.
  • Hidden Depths: Meggy is very book-smart, which leads her to try many jobs after finally winning Splatfest.
    • "Mario University" reveals her attempting to become a lawyer, which she's shown to be quite skilled at when she has to defend Mario in court as part of a college exam. This part of her comes back in spades during the Lawsuit Arc.
    • She briefly pursues a career in law enforcement once she's tied up all loose ends in "Meggy's Destiny", as shown in "Officer Meggy".
    • Beneath the mask of a cheerful, confident, and competitive young girl is an insecure person who pushes herself to ridiculous lengths in order to prove her own self-worth, yet is terrified of losing sight of everything and everyone she holds dear.
  • Honor Before Reason: In "The Mario Showdown", despite having the upper hand outnumbering and outgunning Desti's gang, Meggy accepts an all-or-nothing gamble via a one on one duel against her rival. Immediately subverted when Meggy cheats.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: Played with. Meggy is quite tall for a typical teenage Inkling. Taller than Mario, even.note  However, she is much shorter than the other human female characters, earning her the moniker "Smol Bean". SMG4 poking fun at her height is Hypocritical Humor since she's consistently shown as being taller than him.
  • Humanity Ensues: After the events of the Anime Arc, she's completely drained of her ink and blown apart with a Spirit Bomb, which somehow turns her into a human. This gets temporarily reversed through an IP change contract in "Mario Can’t Play With You Anymore" and "If Mario Was In Splatoon 3".
  • Immune to Slapstick: As an Inkling, she's almost never the object of physical comedy, and when she is, it's usually subdued compared to the rest of the cast (e.g., trying to use a rock as a soccer ball in "The Mario Hustle" results in a down-to-earth Hurt Foot Hop). This gets phased out after she turns human, however, with Meggy eventually getting the same Amusing Injuries just as often as her friends.
  • Implausible Deniability: Prone to this whenever she messes up big time.
  • Insistent Terminology: She and Saiko didn't steal that fire truck, they borrowed it.
  • Irony: Despite being weak to water as an Inkling, her paint gun apparently has a water setting on it.
  • Jerkass Realization:
    • In "If Mario Was In… Splatoon 2", Meggy pushes Mario extra hard in her determination to win the Splatfest, and the two end up getting into a fight. When Mario runs off, Meggy seems to realize she was too hard on him later though and decides to loosen up.
    • Throughout the Anime Arc, Meggy gets increasingly frustrated at her friends for not taking their Splatfest training seriously. It all culminates in "Meggy's Bootcamp", where she turns into a Drill Sergeant Nasty and puts Mario, Luigi, and Tari through a Training from Hell. Halfway through, she realizes she's gone too far and is driven into a Heroic BSoD, reasoning that there's no point in winning if she loses her friends.
    • In "Mario Goes On A Diet", she realizes her good-faith efforts to keep Mario alive were driving him nuts.
  • Kill It with Water: As an Inkling, she couldn't touch water, though how exactly it hurt her varied Depending on the Writer.
  • Lady Looks Like a Dude: In a hilarious Shout-Out to Avengers: Infinity War, her human form is humorously referred as such by Mario.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Her human form was originally part of a shocking twist at the end of the Anime Arc. As part of a channel revamp, SMG4 updated the banner in July 2019, prominently featuring it.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Has a habit of rushing into battles at times. As "Final Fantasy Mario" shows, this can get the rest of the crew in quite a pickle.
  • Leitmotif: Music from Splatoon is used in a lot of her scenes, though "Splattack!" deserves special mention.
  • Lethal Chef: Horrendous at cooking. Her first attempt created… something, and her second doesn't go much better, setting the kitchen (and eventually Bob’s entire mansion) on fire. The fact that Mario, a Lethal Chef himself 90% of the time, was the first person to introduce her to cooking doesn't help. Sometimes Meggy's kitchen skills are so awful she can't even recognize appliances like a waffle iron and a blender.
    • When Mario becomes ill due to Bob stealing his liver, he refuses Meggy's offer of homemade soup. SMG4 and Meggy try to force feed him but Mario slaps away the spoon, which lands in Toad's mouth, upon which he promptly explodes, leading Meggy to say that maybe her soup had too much gunpowder.
  • Like Brother and Sister: To Mario. Meggy even said as much during a Q & A session on the channel. Made more clear in the Anime Arc as Mario takes her seeming Heroic Sacrifice the hardest, and later during the funeral scene reassures her that he'll always have Meggy's back, no matter what. Later, in the Lawsuit Arc, she takes Mario reverting back to his canon personality harder than even SMG4 does.
  • Lovable Jock: A skilled athlete and a sweet girl.
  • Morality Chain: She serves as Mario's. After meeting her, Mario's jerkass traits lessened and he became nicer to (most of) the main cast. He isn't nearly as much of a jerk to her as to others. Even when he does get into fights with her, it's mostly just friendly competition. She's pretty much the only person he'll listen to. And if an antagonist hurts her and he knows, watch out.
  • More Dakka: A huge fan of using this. To be fair, it works most of the time.
  • A Mother to Her Men: What she aims to be. Sure, she can go overboard with her training for Splatfests, but make no mistake, she cares about her team.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: The "alpha male" Old Man in "The Mario Documentary" proves to be powerless against Meggy, who doesn't appear to have any bulk but can evidently lift infinite weight (i.e. Mario).
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She has this reaction in "Meggy's Bootcamp" after realizing that her obsession with winning Splatfest after two consecutive losses has turned her into a complete Jerkass towards her friends, resulting in her having an emotional breakdown complete with tears: the first time she's outright cried besides simply shedding a tear.
  • The Napoleon: Implied in "The Totally Legit Learning Show With SMG4" where SMG4 sings about the words "short" and "tall", and demonstrates by mocking her height*. This results in both her and Saiko torching him with flamethrowers.
  • Nice Girl: One of the friendliest characters in the series. She even sticks up for Mario in "New Year, New Mario" when Mario says that he wants to lose weight for his New Year's Resolution. That said, she does have her breaking points.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Recklessly charging into Nintendo's headquarters to rescue Mario from the production of a new game costs her and SMG4 dearly. After their attempt to get Mario back by launching a surprise ninja attack fails, Nintendo grants Lawyer Kong permission to set up a giant firewall that separates Nintendo characters and OCs, and causes Mario, Luigi, and anyone on their side to forcibly revert to their original game personality. SMG4 calls her out on messing with forces greater than them.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Is the "In Between" part of a trio with Tari and Saiko. She's more often than not a Nice Girl, but her Trigger-Happy Gun Nut tendencies and competitive streak means she's not a pushover in the same way that Tari is.
  • The Nicknamer: She often calls Mario "Red".
  • Non-Standard Character Design: A variation in that it applies to how she's animated. While everyone else's ragdolls are contorted and positioned to look as ridiculous as possible, Meggy is carefully animated using Henry's Animation Tool, resulting in unusually smooth, flowing animation. Even her basic look is a bit more detailed than the Inkling Girl from Splatoon. That said, sometimes she's animated in GMod instead. Exaggerated after she becomes human.
  • Noodle Incident: She has a cousin that she played with when she was younger and almost killed with a water hose once.
  • Not So Above It All: Meggy has her moments. She IS a part of SMG4's team, after all. This is best seen in the SMG4 Crew series, such as when she drowns trying to do a glitch in "Mario Performs Video Game Glitches". Made even more apparent in "Mario Reacts To Nintendo Memes 11 ft. Meggy", where she not only partakes in Mario's prank on Toad, but also gets herself and Mario arrested through a prank of her own. In the very next "Memes" episode, she happily joins Mario in aping a Persona 5-style takedown of Peach, with a background cut showing her in jail holding a sign saying "Worth It".
    • She does it again at the end of "POV: You're Mario" when, after half a day of failing to make a meme video for SMG4, Mario advises her to "Go stupid!" and she finally joins him in his antics.
    • By mid-2023, the rest of the crew's weirdness had definitely rubbed off on her, as she gained the ability to turn herself into a brushcutter by pulling on a lock of her hair (which, maybe not coincidentally, would have been one of her tentacles were she still an Inkling). She uses this power to demolish spiderwebs and furniture.
  • Odd Friendship: With Mario and the gang. Mostly Mario.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: She graduates from Omnia Academy in "Grand Theft Mario", but we never saw her write her final thesis/assignment that led to it. We can assume she discussed the events of "Mario's Tunnel of Doom" (very scary!) in VERY Broad Strokes.
  • Older Than They Look: In a Q&A video from 2021, she claimed to be 19 and met Mario on her 15th birthday. This was confirmed a few months later in "Welcome to Mario Mart™" where we see her ID listing her date of birth. But, due to her petite stature and youthful face, she could still easily pass for 16.
  • One-Hour Work Week: Even after the conclusion of the Revelations Arc, Meggy still attends Omnia Academy as a student and says in the Christmas 2022 Special she plans to graduate "next year". Despite this, she's almost never shown at the Academy and seems to have a large amount of free time. Two episodes in Spring 2023 focused on her completing her final assignment and graduating.
  • Only Sane Woman: She's the cast member most often given this role.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • She agrees to take Boopkins to a "sexy maid" cafe, despite her fear of anime, just to try and break him out of his Heroic BSoD in "The Melancholy of Fishy Boopkins".
    • She is normally a Nice Girl, but grabs the Jerkass Ball hard whenever a Splatfest is around the corner, with her obsession with winning becoming all that matters. This leads her to get into unexpectedly harsh fights with her friends for failing to keep up the pace, first in "If Mario Was in... Splatoon 2", and again in "Meggy's Bootcamp". In the latter episode, she fully acknowledges that her bad attitude has become too big of an issue to ignore, and she becomes much more relaxed and friendly again.
    • "There's Something Up With Meggy" goes overboard with this, from Meggy Squeeing over Tari's duck and asking to buy it, being entirely focused on building a treehouse instead of training and attacking Mario and Luigi when they try and talk with her. Luigi even lampshades the latter two.
  • Out of Focus: Has happened twice since being promoted to Main Character status in late-2017.
    • Intentionally invoked with the Genesis Arc as she leaves to star in her own series before the arc proper begins and only returns once her show has ended, about halfway through the arc. They even use Heavy-Squid (with Lizzie Freeman's voice) as a stand-in for the 10th Anniversary Special.
    • In the second half of 2023, following WESTERN SPAGHETTI, she took a back seat in a majority of episodes, often relegated to brief cameos if she appeared at all, as narrative focus shifted to SMG4 and SMG3.Examples
  • Painting the Medium: Her subtitles use the same font as Splatoon, as she originated from that game.
  • Phoneaholic Teenager: Always carries a phone shaped like an Inkling's squid form, and is often seen texting on it.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Probably the biggest badass among the heroes, Meggy is also rather short due to being an Inkling (though she still maintains this trope after becoming a human).
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Meggy is the red to Tari's blue, as she is a Competition Freak who trains hard for Splatfest and is a rather competent Action Girl. This is also reflected in their respective coloring.
    • She is also sometimes the blue to Mario's red, being the more grounded and sane of the two. Usually.
  • The Rival: Shroomy of all people sees her as this as shown in "Mario School Club" due to him disapproving of her hunting skills.
  • Sanity Slippage:
    • Taking the internet away so she can't watch Splatfests anymore led to her, Tari, and Saiko forming a gang and attacking anyone that comes near in "Mad Mario".
    • More seriously, bottling up her grief over watching Desti getting impaled in front of her and the dying promise she gave causes her to act completely Out of Character, to the point even Mario recognizes she's not acting like herself.
    • After countless deaths in One Shot Wren’s simulation, Meggy is shown to have effectively lost it by the latest loop, holding SMG4 at gunpoint and having very obvious bloodshot eyes.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • She's in full support of Axol getting together with Melony. Technically they do… right before Melony is forced to kill him.
    • She was she one of the attendees at Swagmaster and Sonic's wedding in "If Mario Was In... Sonic Movie 2". A Freeze-Frame Bonus even shows her with a happy smile with her hand over her chest.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: Literally. Meggy was first introduced to the series by Mario opening a can of Orange Paint that she accidentally got trapped inside.
  • Serious Business: Splatfests. She is obsessed with training for them. This gets deconstructed when she gets into a huge fight with Mario in "If Mario Was in… Splatoon 2" for not taking it as seriously as her, and turns into a Drill Sergeant Nasty in "Meggy's Bootcamp" to whip her friends into shape. She finally drops this behavior when she realizes she's taking her frustrations towards her losing streak out on her friends.
  • Signature Headgear: Her red beanie with headphones and goggles that she almost never takes off – she was never seen without it as an Inkling, and the only times she removes it as a human is if her hair is in a ponytail or has to wear a different hat. It's an extremely important memento to her, to the point she explicitly says it contains part of her identity. No surprise then that when it's stolen, she freaks out and quickly and mercilessly hunts down the culprits.note
  • Significant Birth Date: Her birthday is July 16th, the day her debut, "If Mario Was In… Splatoon", premiered.note
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Quite a few.
    • Seemed to share this dynamic with Waluigi, as seen in Mario University and Stupid Mario Sports Mix. Over time though, this has lessened.
    • Also has this with Aziz Yousi, carrying over from Sunset Paradise.
    • If "No TV Make Mario No Okie Dokie" is any indication, she appears to be gaining one with Clench.
  • Sore Loser:
    • True to normal Inklings in Splatoon, she tends to not take losing well. Averted in "The Mario Carnival", where it leads to Defeat Means Friendship with Tari.
    • Deconstructed in "Meggy's Bootcamp", where this trope is used to describe Meggy's struggles with her obsession with Splatfest.
  • Spanner in the Works: Became this in "WOTFI 2020". She, now able to speak in perfect English, manages to convince the Anti-Cast to side with SMG4 in taking down SMG3.
  • Spin Attack: As of "Let's Go Visit Peach!", Meggy's shown to be able to spin rapidly to cut through things like a chainsaw.
  • Squee: Over Tari's shooting skills, right after Tari destroys her in a shooting competition. She also does this any time she watches old Splatfest footage of her idol Oneshot Wren.
  • Super Drowning Skills: Being an Inkling, she could not swim, which she rediscovered in "Stupid Mario Sports Mix" after some time of seemingly forgetting she was even an Inkling. She can only swim after Bowser offers her a pool float… which she's not happy about in the slightest. "The Minecraft Plague" demonstrates that this no longer applies after turning human, and she can now swim just fine.
  • Stepford Smiler: "Meggy's Bootcamp" shows that behind the cheerful and very active girl, she's very insecure and self-hating.
  • Stock Scream: Despite Lizzie Freeman no longer providing new voice lines for Meggy as of "Mario Suffers Infinite Detention", old voice clips continued to be used even after Elsie Lovelock took over the role half a year later in May 2022 ("DO NOT ENTER").
  • Suddenly Voiced: In both English and Japanese in "Mario Gets WOKE", courtesy of the YouTube Remote. The English change became permanent following "War of the Fat Italians 2020" as a result of the final battle against SMG3 and his Anti-Cast.
  • Sweet Tooth: As revealed in the episodes "Food Wars" and "Christmas Wars", she is shown to have a liking for candy.
  • Tears of Joy:
    • Her reaction when she finally wins Splatfest in Meggy's Destiny.
    • In WESTERN SPAGHETTI, when Tari explains to Meggy how she was able to improve her skills navigating the simulation, Meggy's response is to hug Tari and tearfully tell her how proud she is of her. This could also full under Tears Of Relief, since said skills pretty much saved Meggy from an eternity of being constantly killed by One-Shot Wren.
  • Tears of Remorse: When she was an Inkling, she shed a lot of ink-like tears after yelling at her friends in "Meggy's Bootcamp". Besides shedding tears at some points, this is the first time she's all-out cried, making this Serious Business.
  • Technicolor Eyes: They were cyan, blue, pink, or grey in her debut depending on the shot, then solidified as magenta in subsequent appearances. When she became human, they turned dark reddish brown.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: She finally wins Splatfest after countless losses in Meggy's Destiny, the last-ever Splatfest even.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Tomboy to Tari's Girly-Girl.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Instant noodles. According to "New Year, New Mario", she's eaten nothing but them her whole life. The second sentence was possibly retconned in "A Happy Little Road Trip" as, when tempted with McDonalds, she claims to have "left that life a long time ago". Or even earlier in Meggy's Destiny when she attempted to order treats from stalls in Inkopolis during but the Inklings refuse to serve her citing vague "health reasons".
  • Vague Age: Averted, unlike the rest of the cast. We're shown her ID in "Welcome to Mario Mart™" and it lists her date of birth as July 16th, 2002.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: When she watches My Gym Teacher's a Sexy Rhinoceros in "Mario School Club".
  • Youthful Freckles: She gets these after turning into a human. Her 2023 redesign still has them but they're much more subtle.

    Shroomy the Mushroom

Shroomy the Mushroom

Voiced by: Luke Lerdwichagul, Carlos Berenguer (Latin American Spanish dub)
First appearance: "The Mario Channel: MARIO'S CHALLENGE" (2017)

"Well, golly gee!"
Click here to see the Shroominator

A young anthropomorphic mushroom and a member of the Mushroom Scouts with over 300,000 badges to his name. He has the distinction of being the first genuinely Original Character in the series – unlike the above examples, his design does not come from any preexisting franchise.

See here for his Superpowered Evil Side, Anti-Shroomy.

  • The Ace: He was the only one to survive Mario's gauntlet, and he's earned more than 300,000 merit badges thanks to his camping skills. Averted when it comes to snowboarding and identifying mushrooms. Also, he surpasses Meggy in sharpshooting (Subverted with beating Meggy as he knocked her weapon out of her hands to win).
  • Berserk Button: Bears, after getting attacked by one in "Mario Waits For The Bus".
  • Brain Food: He has a large bite taken out of his head, and "Mario Babies" reveals why: Golden Freddy bit him in 1987. And thus, "normal" Shroomy was born!
  • Character Catchphrase: "Well, golly gee!"
  • Cheerful Child: Even more than Fishy Boopkins. He's a boy scout with an always-positive attitude.
  • Crazy-Prepared: He always carries a homemade rocket launcher with him. Whenever he appears, he always has a tool to help rectify the situation.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Effortlessly defeats Mario in "MARIO'S CHALLENGE" by pulling a rocket launcher out of nowhere and blasting Mario away with one clean hit.
    • He gives another to Toadsworth via tank in "Mario Battle Royale", then is on the receiving end of one by Toad and his giant robot.
    • He gives yet another one to Bowser Jr. and co. as the Shroominator (with Tari's help).
    • He effortlessly kills the Weegee doll with a shotgun when it plans to start a zombie apocalypse.
    • He's pretty much on the receiving end of this any time a bear shows up.
  • Dark Horse Victory: Shroomy is the victor of Mario's Challenge despite not showing up anywhere else in the titular episode.
  • A Day in the Limelight: In "Mario's Valentine Advice".
  • Demon Slaying: It's revealed in "War On Beeg SMG4" that Shroomy used to be a demon hunter alongside Doomguy. He's retired from that in the present though.
  • Foreshadowing: His debut in "MARIO'S CHALLENGE" foreshadows his eventual role in "Mario The Boy Scout".
  • Humongous Mecha: Becomes one thanks to E.Gadd in "War on Smash Bros. Ultimate". For a while, anyways.
  • Leitmotif: Expect to hear Western Land whenever he shows up.
  • Merit Badges for Everything: Has a merit badge for crafting a rocket launcher amongst others. He outright states in "Mario Battle Royale" that he's trying for a "World Domination" badge.
  • Mundane Object Amazement: His reaction to the grand prize of Mario's Challenge: a coupon for 10% off of Chicken Nuggets at McDonald's. He immediately wears it like a badge.
  • Out of Focus: Out of everyone in the modern version of the cast, Shroomy is the one that barely appears that much in the show with the rest of the crew since the end of the YouTube arc. He even mentions that they forgot to invite him again during the end of The New Castle.
  • Retired Badass: Before he was a boy scout, he fought alongside Doomguy against the forces of Hell.
  • Serious Business: He takes hunting very seriously.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Whenever his Demon Slaying side emerges, not even a Fireborne Baron of Hell can overpower him. It's usually signified when his head turns purple, and his face mirrors that of DIO Brando. "Mario Babies" reveals that it's actually an inversion – Anti-Shroomy was his original personality, and Shroomy came about when Golden Freddy bit out a chunk of his brain.
  • Tank Goodness: Used a tank in "Mario Battle Royale", not that it did anything against Toad's Humongous Mecha.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: He's used rocket launchers and tanks in his battles. Exaggerated as the Shroominator.
  • Too Dumb to Live: In "Mario and the T-Pose Virus", he eats a T-Pose Mushroom conjured up by Waluigi. Naturally, it causes Shroomy to become patient zero for the titular virus.
  • Walking Spoiler: For his debut episode, "MARIO'S CHALLENGE".
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: "Mario and the VILLAGE" is all about him trying to impress his uncle, Doomguy, after finding out he abandoned him and adopted Isabelle. He ends up moving on from it by the end of the episode.

    Saiko Bichitaru

Saiko Bichitaru

Voiced by: Minako Kotobuki (Japanese, voice clips), Ellyn Barclay ("Darkest Hour"), Alison Bowley (English, one line in The Day SMG4 Posted Cringe), Elsie Lovelock (WOTFI 2021, "Meggy Learns Japanese", "The Meme Games 2022")
First appearance: "Doki Doki Mario Club" (2018)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saikonew1_6.png
Click here to see to see her old design

An unpopular love interest from a dating game called "Kevin's School". Boopkins brings her to life one day, but their relationship ends in tragedy. For a while.

  • Action Girl: To an extent. She isn't afraid to get her hands dirty. Heck, she even takes on Master Hand with a giant hammer.
Saiko: I can't fight... but I know crazy.
  • Affably Evil: While she was still a villain, as crazy and bloodthirsty as she was, she would still wave and chirp "Kon'nichiwa!" cutely to the heroes. She doesn't do it much since she reformed, although she will say it to series villians right before she delivers a beatdown.
  • The Alcoholic: Drinks a lot of booze. Or used to.
  • Alpha Bitch: It's literally in the name. She tones down after softening up to the whole group, but she can still be pretty mean.
  • Amicable Exes: Subverted at first; she didn't take being dumped by Fishy Boopkins very well. Played straight after her Heel–Face Turn - she's still friends with him as said in "Mario and the Bob Mansion". It even proves to be the catalyst to Bob's downfall during his Rapper Arc, as Luigi revealing that Bob drove Boopkins into a Heroic BSoD causes Saiko to turn on him.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Subverted, as she has brightly shaded pink-and-purple hair in girlish pigtails, but when not fighting or causing destruction, acts very calm and aloof.
  • Anti-Hero: Of the Unscrupulous variety after her Heel–Face Turn. She's on the side of Mario and friends and she is fiercely loyal to them, but she's quite willing to maim anyone that pisses her off regardless of them being good or evil. She's done questionable things, such as stealing a fire truck and using someone as a motorcycle ramp, to help her friends out.
  • Art Evolution: "The Meme Games 2022" ends with her model getting upgraded to look less realistic and more Animesque. Justified in-universe as her appearance being properly updated to match the game she originally came from, since she had been pulled out via different means.
  • Attention Whore: She really wants the spotlight. Probably why she sides with Bob at the start of "Mario and The Diss Track"; she just wants to be famous. Even now, while she's definitely heroic, she's still quite vain. Later on, she starts avoiding attention, particularly from simps like Whimpu.
  • Badass Biker: Rides a motorcycle during "Luigi's Lesson" and "Mad Mario".
  • Berserk Button:
    • Not paying attention to her or rejecting her was a good way to get on her bad side early on. She was a Yandere, after all.
    • Being insulted, according to "Mario's Hell Kitchen". She weaponizes it during the episode, getting Shroomy to insult her so she can get angry and work faster. Particularly saying she'll never be loved — or being called ugly — is a HUGE Berserk Button for her, as Shroomy tells her she'll "never be loved with that horrendous face of hers." She goes full Yandere mode on the vegetables as a result.
Saiko: Insult me! I work better when I'm angry!
    • Killing one of her friends is the worst thing to do around her: she goes into Tranquil Fury mode when that happens, and that will most likely be the last thing you see. Francis finds out the hard way when he murders Desti with a Sephiroth replica; Saiko outright ensures that he'll die painfully by stuffing him in one of his own Ink Zuccers and turning it to maximum, letting the machine drain him of his life while she leaves him to suffer on his own island being on self-destruct.
  • Big Bad: Of "Doki Doki Mario Club", remaining a recurring villain for a few episodes after. She's since dropped this.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Saves Mario from a heart attack in "Luigi's Lesson".
    • In "Mario and the Waluigi Apocalypse", she saves Mario and SMG4 from the T-pose zombies via giant hammer.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: At least when she starts off. In her debut episode, she appears to be an average love interest in an average Visual Novel, but then she starts to become more and more clingy towards Fishy Boopkins, even going so far as to burn all of his waifu pillows.
  • Bullying a Dragon: In "The Demon Among Us", Saiko picked a fight with Anti-Shroomy, who was on a rampage hunting for Bowser. He quickly defeats her.
    Anti-Shroomy: Hehehe... that was cute.
  • But Now I Must Go: Rides off on her motorbike after saving Mario's life in "Luigi's Lesson".
  • Can't Spit It Out: She may be able to say it while alone to Boopkins that they were friends, but she's mistaken for having a stroke when she has to say it in public. She gets over this later on, openly referring to her friends when they're in danger.
  • Character Development: Mellows out quite a bit over the course of the series, even more so after the Rapper Bob arc, though she still keeps her penchant for violence. By the Anime arc, you can undoubtedly call her heroic.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She even gets jealous over OTHER anime girls! It gets to the point where she wants to wipe out all the pretty people in the world… just so she can be prettiest. She's calmed down since her Heel–Face Turn, but is still a bit yandere-ish.
  • Composite Character: Saiko is a mix of all of the girls from the game her character originated from. She's got the hidden depression of Sayori, the tsundere behavior of Natsuki, the clinginess of Monika, and the psychotic and obsessive behavior of Yuri.
  • Cool Big Sis: After getting over her Clingy Jealous Girl issues, she started acting as the older (if still violent and hot-tempered) sister figure to Tari and Meggy. Especially Tari, even taking her to the dentist.
  • Cute and Psycho: An utterly gorgeous anime-styled young woman from a dating sim brought to life, and a violent homicidal sociopath who will maim and kill anybody who dares rob her of attention or just straight up piss her off.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • The Anime Arc puts her center stage, as much of the drama revolving around the anime ban is how it's caused her to be exiled from the Mushroom Kingdom. She becomes the de facto leader for the group in Japan when they seek Axol's help to overturn the ban and again leads the charge once Meggy gets kidnapped.
    • KS-2's subplot in 2022 sees her returning to prominence after years of being Out of Focus, culminating in her getting a redesign.
  • The Dreaded: "Luigi's Lesson" shows that pretty much everyone fears her and will run from the sight of her. In "War of the Fat Italians 2018", she scares SMG4 so much he has a heart attack. She's no longer this after her Character Development was completed.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Early episodes featuring her depicted her as an alcoholic, with a bottle of wine on her at pretty much all times. After a while, this quirk was dropped.
  • Expy: Design-wise, she's a combination of the ladies from Doki Doki Literature Club!. Personality-wise, she's an exaggerated version of Monika to the point she can be considered an O.C. Stand-in, seeing as how 3D models of the DDLC girls did not exist at the time.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Rescues Fishy Boopkins from falling off a cliff in "Mario Battle Royale", only for the both of them to be thrown to their deaths by Mario, who was right behind her. They get brought back at the end of the episode along with all the other people killed.
  • Fake Shemp: Except for specific examples noted above, Saiko normally uses Lana's voice clips.
  • Flanderization: She went from an insane attention-wanting criminal, to a forgivable Anti-Hero like Mario and Bob… to a grumpy, disloyal, KFC-obsessed douchebag. She acknowledges this in one pre-video ad, saying she feels like she's fallen into a rut where everything is predictable and she has nothing that challenges her anymore.
  • Foil:
    • Amazingly to her former crush Fishy Boopkins. Both are people that no one seemed to like and desperately want companionship. This is Lampshaded when Fishy Boopkins tells the others to just let her go because he feels sorry for her.
    • To Bob as well. They both have ego-centric personalities, both desire to be famous and both just want friends due to their extreme loneliness, willing to go to extreme lengths to achieve that. It's not a surprise that when Saiko starts working as Bob's personal assistant during his rap career the two gel fairly well though the partnership ends very quickly once Luigi tells Saiko about the truth behind Bob's heroics and what he did to Boopkins.
  • Freudian Excuse: She acts the way she does mainly because she was so unpopular in her home game. Boopkins rejecting her only made her get worse.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Commandeers several mechanical inventions, including turrets and a Mini-Mecha. She uses a high-tech laser rifle and pilots a Humongous Mecha in "Final Fantasy Mario".
  • Gagging on Your Words: In "Mario and the Diss Track", she has incredible difficulty admitting that Boopkins is her friend, to the extent when she tries to do so, Mario asks if she's having a stroke.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Dresses like an anime high-schooler and loves ass kicking activities.
  • Good Is Not Nice: While the "good" part is a bit more ambiguous to outsiders, her loyalty to her friends sets her towards the good guys. That being said, it's generally not a good idea to mess with her or her friends, unless you want to be introduced to her violent side. Harming or outright killing one of her friends is even worse, as that will guarantee your death by her hand. You could ask Francis after he killed Desti with Sephiroth, but you can't because Saiko ensured his demise.
  • Gratuitous Japanese: Her voice clips are mostly Japanese phrases, with a few of Lana and Cia's voice clips in there.
    • Even when she has custom lines (like in songs and WOTFI raps) provided by English-speaking singers, she's still speaking Japanese, but those lines often translate correctly, which her usual voice clips rarely do.
  • Genki Girl: How she started off, both as a dating sim A.I. and after becoming a real person. She was very cute and energetic and sweet towards Boopkins, and each time anyone would approach her, she would be friendly. Only when they turned their attention away from her did this begin cracking and gave way to her murderous and angrier side.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Possesses these, which fit the more bubbly and cute half of her personality. Otherwise, her hair doesn't fit her mood at all.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Oh, yes. She's attacked people for minor slights such as getting her name wrong or ignoring her.
  • Hates Being Touched: When Luigi pats her on the back in "Mario and the Diss Track", she immediately crushes his hand and gives him a Death Glare. In numerous episodes, when her friends give her a hug, her general response is to Freak Out and gripe about her personal space.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Started out as an antagonistic Yandere who attacked Mario and company on sight. After Luigi befriended her, she's calmed down a lot, though she's still a Yandere with a Hair-Trigger Temper.
  • The Hero: Serves as this in the middle of 2022 (Season 12), with most of the episodes around that time being themed around her, notably ones that also include Kaizo.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • It's hinted that she's good with technology - see Gadgeteer Genius above. In "Luigi's Lesson", it's also hinted that beneath her Clingy Jealous Girl/Yandere attitude she's deeply lonely inside, and just wants companionship and acknowledgment. She has a good singing voice too.
    • "DO NOT ENTER" shows what's hidden in her sealed room. It's the now glitchy copy of the game she was magically brought to life from. She's torn between her new life and her old one but can't bring herself to talk about it.
  • Hot-Blooded: Despite mostly being grumpy, her violent and hot-tempered demeanor makes her out to be this.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: In "Deleted". While travelling to the past to make sure she doesn't get erased from existence, she manages to get rid of Whimpu by kicking him into Fishy Boopkins' computer. Unfortunately, this was the same computer that was used to bring her to life, meaning she ended up erasing herself from existence.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Likes to drink wine and occasionally beer, too.
  • Interspecies Romance: With Fishy Boopkins, at least before he broke it off. She still considers him a friend, though.
  • It's All About Me: Early on, everything was about her. Don't ignore or reject her. These days, she has become substantially less selfish, becoming far more caring of those around her, namely Meggy and Tari, and even Desti.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Her entire motivation for being so angry and murderous – She was ignored while she was still an AI in a dating sim game forever, and therefore was terribly lonely as a result, leaving her heartbreakingly desperate for even the smallest amount of love or adoration, and thus couldn't help herself when she was being ignored, as it reminds her of how much it hurt in the game. However, she's since dropped this, as she now has best friends in the form of the main cast, and if anything is just grumpy and aloof.
  • I Owe You My Life: After Axol unbans anime in the Anime Arc, Saiko is grateful to Axol. So much so that when Meggy gets kidnapped, she believes Axol is innocent, which turned out to be correct.
  • Instant A.I.: Just Add Water!: Once just an unpopular love interest from a dating game called "Kevin's School", magic from Kamek's wand not only brings her personality to life, but it gives her her own body.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: "Doki Doki Mario Club" rightfully puts Saiko in the wrong for her behavior towards Fishy Boopkins. But in her defense, Boopkins was Innocently Insensitive at best and a lousy boyfriend at worst. For starters, he and Lemmy were watching anime girls on TV, knowing Saiko was there with them, which would be the equivalent of eyeballing other women on a date. While Saiko burning his body pillows of Miku is definitely wrong and was understandably the last straw for Boopkins, it only happened because he casually presented them as his "most prized possessions", making it seem like he valued a fictional girlfriend over his now real one.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: As of "Luigi's Lesson", while she's still a violent Yandere, she's much nicer to others than she was before and acts as an older sister figure to Meggy and Tari.
  • Karmic Jackpot: After her Heel–Face Turn, she became the best of friends with SMG4 and co., and nobody was really afraid of her anymore.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: As we've seen in "Super Challenge 64", cats bring out the best in her.
  • Loony Fan: Becomes one for post-"Mario And... The Well" Bob, considering how she takes notes on how to get famous in "Mario And The Bob Mansion" and how it was her idea to go to Bob's concert in "The Melancholy of Fishy Boopkins". Averted after Luigi tells Saiko about what Bob did to get that fame.
  • Meaningful Name: Saiko Bichitaru. Psycho. Bitch. -Itaru. While her surname obviously isn't Japanese, the kanji in her given-name (最子) directly translates as "the greatest child", but can also be read as "the best", which is fitting for her arrogant, violent and attention-seeking personality. May also be an Ironic Name, as despite this name she was unpopular among fans of the dating sim she was from.
  • Morality Pet:
    • Luigi, as he was one of the only people who tolerated her at first, and was even willing to befriend her at a time where everyone would head for the hills at the mere sight of her.
    • Boopkins, as mentioned above. Took a while to get there, though.
    • She forms a strong bond with Meggy and Tari after the Waluigi arc, which may be due to them being the only other prominent females in the main cast at the time.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She has arguably the most attractive design of the gang, with a midriff-bearing top and pretty large proportions. Somewhat downplayed following her redesign, which cuts down on her proportions to make her look more natural like the rest of the gang.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Is the "Mean" part of a trio with Meggy and Tari. While ultimately a Jerk with a Heart of Gold, she's still a violent Yandere with a grumpy streak and occasional psychopathic tendencies.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Has a thing for violence and destruction, as you can tell by her yandere-inspired character.
  • Nonchalant Dodge: Some videos show her to be rather good at dodging projectiles.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: May be in part Early-Installment Weirdness – she was the first female OC in the series (Meggy was still an Inkling at the time and Tari had yet to be finalized) – but her design was quite different from the other original models the SMG4 series went on to produce. This is likely why she was redesigned in "The Meme Games 2022".
  • Only Sane Woman: Compared to the likes of Mario and SMG4. Well, as sane as a violence-loving Yandere can be. SMG4 once chose her to accompany Luigi in "Mario's Inside Story" because he knew that Saiko is the least likely to screw it up. However, her Not So Above It All moments can subvert this on occasion like the "The Intruder..." episode for example.
  • Out of Focus: Fell into this hard following the Anime Arc (where her plight was the primary plot-driver). Although she continued to appear in arcs and random episodes, she didn't get real focus again until 2022.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Does this to Francis after finally managing to get ahold of him in the final battle of the Anime Arc. This crazed otaku chameleon wanted to kidnap all of Inkopolis and use their ink to make his waifu army and he was directly responsible for the murder of Desti, who was killed by one of his drawings. She ends up throwing him in his own Ink Zuccer, setting it on maximum and leaving him to have the life drained out of him.
  • Psychopathic Womanchild: She often throws fits when she doesn't get enough attention and stole Luigi's hat at one point just to annoy him. She also gets trigger happy and childish when it comes to "ass-whoopin'"and chants it with Mario in "The Day SMG4 Posted Cringe". and she also still beats her own friends whenever they cross her despite being redeemed.
  • Refugee from TV Land: Saiko was originally from a dating simulator that Boopkins downloaded before he used Kamek's wand to bring her to the real world. Notably, Saiko has never expressed any desire to return to her game, and seems to have settled down comfortably.
  • Reluctant Psycho: She doesn't want to hurt people, but her temper problems and abandonment issues make it hard for her to function. This becomes less and less of an issue as her characterization progresses.
  • Shoot the Dog: After Saiko stuffs Francis in his own Ink Zuccer and leaves him to die, she closes her eyes as she walks away, as though telling herself that she didn't want it to have to come to this. Which makes sense, considering Francis originally looked up to her before his attempted genocide. Nevertheless, it's clear by the way she doesn't turn back after she does it – as well as the quiet, shaking fury in her voice – that she is absolutely repulsed by Francis' actions and that he certainly deserved it.
    Saiko: (seething) Jackass…
  • Signature Instrument: After taking down Bob's ego in the Rapper Bob Arc, Saiko is occasionally seen jamming on her guitar.
  • Skeleton Motif: She has a skull with crossbones on her necklace, and a skull with bows on her belt and on the front of her hammer. In addition, the "Darkest Hour" song has the latter skull as its single art.
  • Sour Supporter: Seems to have become this since her Heel–Face Turn. She's no longer actively hostile towards Mario and co. but still tends to be unfriendly and have a perpetual "I'd rather be anywhere but here" look on her face. There are rare moments since she's first appeared where she'll revert back into Genki Girl mode.
  • Spanner in the Works: To Bob during the Rapper Arc. After Bob had achieved his ill-gotten fame by manipulating the main cast into boosting his rap songs, causing everyone in the Mushroom Kingdom to be his fans, Saiko learns how Bob achieved his fame. That, as well as his diss track against the main cast to bump up the ratings causes Fishy to go nearly catatonic, Saiko proceeds to diss him, exposing Bob's actions in the Arc and loses everything.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's rather attractive, and is also one of the tallest characters in the whole cast. SMG4 even has her as the main subject of the "Short and Tall Song" (along with Meggy):
SMG4: Saiko's next, GODDAMN! / She could play Michael Jordan on Space Jam! / Every time she gets mad, her height just grows by a tad!
    ''(Saiko pulls out a knife)
SMG4: Oh, this might end bad...
  • Suddenly Voiced: "Mario and The Diss Track" has her singing a track called "Darkest Hour". This happens again for "Saikosis", the song she sings for the climax of "The Meme Games 2022".
  • Teens Are Monsters: Considering she came from a high school dating sim and her youthful personality, Saiko is still a teenager, or at the very least in her early 20s. With this said, if you upset her in the slightest, she instantly becomes homicidal and will (or attempt to) murder whoever is dumb enough to anger her. However, with Luigi's help, Saiko becomes substantially less bloodthirsty than before, and her last victim actually really deserved it.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone:
    • She gets a post on Twitter after winning the rock-selling competition in "The Mario Hustle".
    • In "SUPER CHALLENGE 64", she succeeds her challenge of being nice via rescuing a cat stuck in a tree, albeit with much collateral damage.
    • In "Mario and the Diss Track" "Darkest Hour" actually succeeds in making Saiko popular.
  • Token Evil Teammate: She isn't the most selfish member of gang, but is the most brutal, wrathful, and blood-thirsty.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After the events of "Luigi's Lesson", she becomes friends with Luigi. She hasn't gone on any full-on rampages since, and even helps the heroes out from time to time (if reluctantly). It's since come full circle in a full Heel–Face Turn as, while she's still on the loony, selfish, violent side, Saiko has opened herself up to the others and has learned to care for others, most notably Meggy and even Desti.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: She is often seen with a large bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
  • Tranquil Fury: Saiko is notorious for her Hair-Trigger Temper and loud, bombastic, violent outbursts. But when Francis murders Desti, she is instantly set into this. Her face gets cold as steel, and her voice is a low growl as she slowly corners Francis and grabs him by the neck before tossing him in one of his own Ink Zuccers. She then sets it to maximum, causing the machine to slowly - and painfully - siphon out his life force. Saiko does not so much as hesitate as she walks away, nothing but ice cold disgust in her voice.
Francis: Hey, hey, let's not do anything rash now! It was just one Octoling—!
(Saiko grabs him by the throat)
Saiko: You pathetic waste of space… I'm gonna make you wish you were never born.
  • Verbal Tic: Says "oi" a lot.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Has a heartwrenching one in "Doki Doki Mario Club!" after Mario and company defeat her, which leads to her breaking up with Fishy Boopkins and running out of the castle in tears.
  • We Used to Be Friends:
    • With Francis and the anime cartel, until the cartel helps Francis with his attempted Inkling genocide to power Axol's magic pen, which Francis uses to kill Desti.
    • With Kaizo, another character from her dating sim game. The two were bandmates that shared many of the same interests. However, while Saiko changed during her time outside of her game and away from him, Kaizo stayed the same Toxic Friend Influence he was in the game. After "The Meme Games 2022", the two are on much better terms (though Saiko did point out that Kaizo needed to stop being toxic).
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Saiko gives one to Mario in "War on Beeg SMG4" when the latter accidentally derails her and Shroomy's attempt to stop the titular entity by catapulting JubJub in the path of Saiko's rocket.
  • When She Smiles: In her debut, before revealing her violent and jealous tendancies, Saiko is actually very cute and bubbly. And even now, if someone shows kindness to her instead of horror and disdain, she behaves very sweet and friendly in turn. Luigi, Meggy, and Tari especially bring out her best. And yes, her smile is absolutely precious (when it isn't creepy or a Slasher Smile).
  • Yandere: Yes. She forced Wario and Waluigi to build a mech just because Fishy Boopkins rejected her. Downplayed after Luigi befriends her, but it's still there.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: She was pulled out of a Dating Sim via magic and has no way to reenter the game (not that she'd necessarily want to).
    • At the beginning of the Anime Arc, she can't stay in the Mushroom Kingdom after anime has been banned because she is an anime character, so she, SMG4, Boopkins, and Bob flee to Japan. She comes back to the kingdom when they find Axol, who can help them with lifting the ban.

    Tari

Tari

Voiced by: Celeste Notley-Smith (2018-2023), Lottie Bourne (2024), Carmen Mazariegos (Latin American Spanish dub)
First appearance: "Mario the Ultimate Gamer" (2018)

A shy blue-haired Gamer Chick who tends to get hurt a lot. Mario turns to her for guidance on how to be a good player and kick SMG4's butt at Super Smash Each Other In The Ass Bros., and has since become one of the main cast members.

For tropes regarding her Meta Runner incarnation, click here.

  • Adaptational Wimp: Zigzagged. Compared to her Meta Runner counterpart, she's far less bold, but is shown on a few occasions to be physically stronger.
  • Afraid of Doctors: As revealed in "Mario Goes to the Dentist", Tari is terrified of the dentist; Saiko has to literally drag her kicking and screaming to an appointment, and only goes in when she sees Mario is her dentist… until she realizes he isn't one.
  • Alone with the Psycho: "The Mario Convention" ended with her being in the same vicinity as Waluigi, who had turned many people, including her best friend Meggy into mindless zombies. Oh, and he also brainwashed Master Hand. Considering this took place late at night in the convention, and no other route of escape is evident, her situation at the time was all but grim. Thankfully, she was revealed to be fine in "War of the Fat Italians 2018", giving her the opportunity to pull a Big Damn Heroes moment.
  • Animal Motifs: Duck, obviously.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: In "Meggy's Bootcamp", when Meggy berates her along with Mario and Luigi for their poor performance during her training regimen, Tari has a feeble and simple response – but it works in making Meggy realize that she's demanding way too much from them.
    Tari: Meggy… we are trying…
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Her love of rubber ducks bites her in the ass in "Deleted.", when Belle uses one to distract her during their game, which costs Tari the win and ends with her being temporarily wiped from existence. She's learned her lesson by "WOTFI 2020", managing to avoid getting distracted by another duck while trying to steal the Heavy's sandvich.
  • Badass Adorable: She's a cute shy girl, and she sometimes faces bad guys. She ends up proving these credentials against One Shot Wren, where her very nature allows her to be immune to his simulation and set up a plan to defeat him, all without him ever realizing she was not affected until it was too late.
  • Berserk Button: In "The Mario Purge", she gets enraged when her rubber ducky Quackington gets destroyed. A smaller one, seen in her first appearance, is dissing her for being a Gamer Chick, as Bob learns the hard way.
  • Blush Sticker: She always appears to be blushing, in contrast to her Meta Runner counterpart.
  • Big Damn Heroes: During "War of the Fat Italians 2018", Tari appears along with a Rejection-powered controller and by controlling SMG4, she manages to smash Waluigi's staff, freeing the T-Pose Zombies from Waluigi's control and reverting them back to normal.
  • Birds of a Feather: With Luigi. Their bond over nonviolent matters is often played for laughs and even used seriously in some cases.
  • Break the Cutie: As shown in the teasers for the Gang’s trip to the Wild West, she seems aware of the dark happenings afoot, and her expression in them shows she is definitely not enjoying it.
  • Breakout Character: A rare inversion. Tari was created for Meta Runner, but debuted in the SMG4 series first to see how/if fans would like her. They loved her, thus she not only got her show but remained a main cast member in SMG4.
  • Butt-Monkey: She's the go-to when it comes to female slapstick humor.
    • In her first appearance alone, she gets launched into a vending machine, has her head flattened by a mallet, gets kicked by Mario, attacked by ducks, and falls to the concrete ground of Peach's moat when the windowsill she's standing on crumbles beneath her feet.
    • Best shown in the climax of "War of the Fat Italians 2018", where even in her dramatic intro, she trips and falls comically from the pile of rubble she was standing on.
      Waluigi: How cute.
    • Often, whenever she isn't victim to physical abuse, the naughtier members of the gang take advantage of her naïveté with pranks varying from killing something that she finds wholesome to straight up destroying her innocence with an inappropriate video.
  • Character Development: While subtle, over four years she got a little bit bolder and less apologetic compared to her earliest appearances. 2023 saw her actively wishing to become braver and stronger, which kicked off her first character arc in SMG4 proper.
  • Chekhov's Hobby: Overlaps with Chekhov's Skill.
    • Ultimately, it's Tari's gaming skills that save the other crew members from an overpowered, near-victorious Waluigi in the events of "War of the Fat Italians 2018".
    • Similarly, those gaming skills also apply to her assisting in defeating One-Shot Wren in "Western Spaghetti", due to virtual worlds not affecting her.
  • The Chew Toy: She is the female character (other than Peach or Toadette) most likely to get smacked, blown up, or otherwise thrown around for comedy.
  • Companion Cube: Her rubber ducky, Quackington. After its "death" in "The Mario Purge", it gets replaced in "SMG4 Christmas 2018" by one named Archibald.
  • Cowardly Lion: She's incredibly nervous about everything and is usually unable to stand up for herself, but that won't stop her when fighting against bad guys. Of course, internal strength does not mean physical strength.
  • Crippling Overspecialisation: INCREDIBLY good at games, to the point of beating Meggy in a shooting game. However, she's really shy, very socially awkward, and doesn't seem to be good at anything else. Further confirmed in "Meggy's Bootcamp", as when Meggy wants to know why Tari is struggling to shoot the targets in Splatfest practice despite her skills at the carnival, Tari explains that she's only really good at games and the Splatfest is more of a sport. Meggy has to add point values to the targets to make Splatfest into a "game" in Tari's mind.
  • The Cutie: She is an idealistic rubber-duck-obsessed gamer chick who doesn't have a mean bone in her body.
  • Cuteness Proximity: She squees with joy around rubber duckies. Or when she sees any cute animal, really.
  • Cyborg: By her own admission, which she says is why she's so incredible at games. One of her arms appears to be mechanical.
  • Depending on the Writer: Her physical strength may vary throughout episodes depending on the plot, though she is more often portrayed as weak to the point her hitting someone often results in a squeak-toy sound.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: In the Waluigi Arc, her eyes briefly turn blue for dramatic effect every time she amps up her Meta Runner abilities. Later videos only have her do this when she uses her game-warp ability… or when Mario turns her into a weapon.
  • Enemy Scan: Tari uses this to incapacitate the Super Smash-each-other-in-the-Ass Bros. knockoffs of Toad and Peach.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: You know the Anime Cartel is bad news when not even a kind soul like Tari wants anything to do with them.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: She and Meggy start out as rivals in "The Mario Carnival", but when she destroys Meggy in a shooting competition, Meggy is so amazed by her skills that they become great friends.
  • Foil: To Saiko. She's shy, calm, and friendly.
  • Game Face: Whenever she uses her cyborg abilities in the Waluigi arc, her eyes go completely blue (if only for a few seconds). She also goes into this whenever she (and anyone else who is unlucky enough to be in close proximity to her) warps into a game.
  • Gamer Chick: She's one of the most skilled gamers in the series, beating all the guys she plays against without a sweat. However, she only really enjoys playing for fun. She even manages to beat Super Saiyan God Goku - who while not the real thing presumably has the same speed and reaction time - at a video game, though she gets on the receiving end of a Neck Lift for it.
  • Grew a Spine: Normally intimidated by antagonists and not prefering violence when facing them alone, Tari is the one to stand up to Mario when the latter turns everyone into NFTs in "Mario Gets Into NFTs", something that catches Mario off guard.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Tari's hair covers one of her eyes, and she has a shy personality associated with this trope.
  • Idiot Hair: Her 2023 redesign gives her a sticking-out strand of hair in the shape of a heart.
  • I Don't Want to Die: In "Deleted.", Belle, under the order of SMG3, prevents Mario from properly meeting her past self in "The Ultimate Gamer", which causes her to be shunted back to the future. But, due to Belle's meddling, Tari fades from existence right in front of him. Her utterly heartbroken final words to Mario as she dies?
Tari: (sobbing) Mario, I don't want to go!
  • Impossibly Tacky Clothes: Downplayed, but she wears socks with sandals.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Her shooting skills blow Meggy's out of the water, as she manages to get a score of infinity in a shooting contest.
  • Intrepid Fictioneer: Similar to her Meta Runner counterpart. No thanks to Mario, both of them get warped into their fighting game in "The Tari Abnormality". In following episodes, her abilities are sometimes used by other characters whenever they need her abilties, sometimes to the point of her being a Mundane Utility.
  • It Must Be Mine!: She's obsessed with rubber ducks to the point that even Saiko is scared of her.
  • Kick the Dog: She's the proverbial dog. In an unusual show (by Modern-SMG4 standards) of jerkassness, Mario has invited Tari several times to watch Nintendo Memes with him. With the exception of the 6th installment where she's with him the whole time, every other instance he makes her watch cute animals being killed (e.g. a Pokémon being run over by a lawnmower). After the first time, she asks him directly if he's setting her up for another "prank". He says no, and then laughs when the videos invariably break her.
  • Kill the Cutie: Due to the efforts of SMG3 and Belle, Tari's debut in the series is botched and thus she is erased from the timeline, sobbing and pleading with Mario that she doesn't want to die, while Mario can only watch helplessly. She's the first victim of this too. Thankfully, the next episode reveals that she survived along with everyone else, though they are stuck in the Internet Graveyard.
  • Lethal Klutz: The majority of her Black Comedy comes from her clumsiness and obsessions driving her to do destructive things. This is to contrast the rest of the cast, as their destruction is actively caused by jerkass tendencies, which she doesn't have.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: When playing games, or if her rubber duck is threatened.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is a play on Atari.
  • Morality Pet: Tari's sheer innocence brings out the protective side in characters who are usually jerks by default.
    • While not quite to the same extent as Meggy, Tari is one of the few people Mario isn't as much of a jerk to.
    • Saiko is quick to protect Tari and making Tari sad is a quick, easy, and painful way to invoke her wrath.
  • Mythology Gag: Her 2023 redesign is partly based on that of her Friday Night Funkin' mod in "If Mario Was In Friday Night Funkin 2".
  • Nice Girl: She's one of the sweetest and non-confrontational people Mario has ever met, and only wants to make sure everyone is happy in the end. Even when in a rap battle against Waluigi in "WOTFI 2018", the Grand Finale of the Waluigi Arc, she's still against actually fighting and suggests just playing games instead.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Is the "Nice" part of a trio with Meggy and Saiko, being a Shrinking Violet Gamer Chick who is one of the nicest and least violent characters in the series.
  • Non-Action Guy: The poor girl can't fight to save her life… which isn't normally a problem given who she hangs out with.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Subverted. In her earlier appearances, she was animated more smoothly and naturally, but post-Waluigi Arc, her ragdoll took on the same type of movements as the rest of the cast.
  • Odd Friendship: With Saiko. Tari is probably the closest thing Saiko has to a best friend but their personalities are polar opposite. In return, Saiko is very protective of Tari, to the point of covering Tari's ears when Mario curses long and loudly enough the entire Mushroom Kingdom hears it.
  • Only One Name: She's only known as Tari.
  • Out of Focus: Appeared much less any time Meta Runner was premiering new episodes.
    • She ends up sitting out most of the Lawsuit Arc because of this (Meta Runner was airing its final season at the time). Lampshaded at the end where she expresses disappointment at having missed an entire arc. It wouldn't be until the Wild West mini-arc in the next season that Tari would finally be back in the spotlight.
    • Her appearances diminished heavily following "If Mario Was In Friday Night Funkin 2".
  • Prone to Tears: She cries a lot, whether it's over serious matters like trying in vain to talk sense into Meggy while she's a T-Pose Zombie, or if it's over Bob's, um… "beautiful story" of Bobmas.
  • Properly Paranoid:
    • She doesn't trust the Anime Cartel and says they're bad guys. She was right.
    • When she and Meggy hear about One-Shot Wren's whereabouts in the Wild West, she thought it was weird how the TV turned on specifically to show the advertisement for it, then turned off by itself. Even fans who had no idea what Wren was planning at the time could tell that something was very off about that.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Her eyes are purple, and is ranked in B-Tier in the official SMG4 power level tier list.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: According to "WOTFI 2019", stealing her rubber ducks is considered dangerous because her sad look is powerful enough to make you drop dead, as SMG4 learns the hard way. It becomes a lot less funny in "Deleted.", where she can't do anything but stare at Mario with this look when she's wiped from existence.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni:
    • Tari is the blue to Meggy's red, as she is a pacifist gamer who would rather solve problems using her wits and gamer skills in a non-lethal fashion. Their respective hair colors drive the point home.
    • She's also the blue to the red of her sentient arm, Clench. Clench is hyperactive and energetic, while Tari is collected and shy.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Her new model has a cowlick shaped like a heart, representing her kind nature.
  • Sanity Slippage: Taking away the internet, preventing her from playing her games online, caused her (and Meggy and Saiko) to lose it.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • Played for Laughs in the Genesis Arc. When SMG4 and 3 hold hands in order to activate their meme powers, Tari describes this as "so sweet".
    • She was one of the attendees at Swagmaster and Sonic's wedding in "If Mario Was In... Sonic Movie 2", looking quite excited for it as she sat at the front row. And when Eggman ruins the wedding, Tari is the first to urge Mario to do something.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's quite easy to fluster.
  • Shy Blue-Haired Girl: Her blue hair fits her shy personality well.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Bubble Bass, apparently. Also, Belle Fontiere, for a different reason.
  • Spanner in the Works: Waluigi had all but won, mind-controlling Master Hand, turning everyone except Mario and SMG4 into T-Pose Zombies and forcing the two men to fight for his amusement. He did not expect Tari's appearance, nor her gaming skills to surpass his, and he was especially caught off guard by her bold strategy of sending SMG4 straight for Waluigi. This leads to Waluigi being (temporarily) depowered and the T-Pose Zombies being freed.
    • She ends up being this again for One Shot Wren in Western Spaghetti. Because she's someone who's already used to going into virtual worlds, Wren's simulation has no effect on her, allowing her to set up a digital haven under his nose, and getting Meggy to a safe place to recuperate and plan an effective counter to him. If it wasn't for her, Meggy likely would have been stuck in there and murdered forever.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: She sympathizes with Mango when he says he doesn't want to fight anyone in "The Tari Abnormality".
  • The Kid with the Remote Control: At the end of "War on Smash Bros. Ultimate", she takes control of the Shroominator and curb-stomps Bowser Jr., Iggy, Morton, Wendy, and Roy. Said remote was later used against Waluigi himself, by directly controlling SMG4 into dashing directly at Waluigi, smashing his staff and reverting their friends back to normal in the process.
  • Token Good Teammate: As Saiko's Foil, Tari is the least violent and brutal member of the team.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly Girl to Meggy's Tomboy, which isn't saying much, considering she's a Gamer Chick.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Heavily Downplayed, but she's seen an improvement in physical abilities compared to her earlier appearances. This was likely done to make Whimpu look pathetic compared to everyone else.
  • Vague Age: Tari's Meta Runner counterpart is confirmed to be 22 years old and this version is said to be younger, but by how much is unknown.
  • Voice Grunting: Tari's spoken dialogue in SMG4 consists of a couple dozen recycled pre-recorded phrases supplemented with full subtitles. As of 2024 there are three exceptions where she is fully voiced:
    • 2022's "Into The Marioverse" which despite its name is a Tari-centric episode where four versions of Tari appear and speak to each other.
    • Her own 2023 character arc lasting from "Grand Theft Mario" to WESTERN SPAGHETTI.
    • "The Day My Arm Went Psycho" in 2024.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Near useless in an actual physical fight, but very skilled at video games, plus things similar to video games like rigged carnival games or a Lotus-Eater Machine simulation that masks itself.
  • Womanchild: Downplayed as she's reasonably level-headed, but she definitely acts like this at times. She has a rubber ducky for a Companion Cube, she cries easily, and she completely believes the stories of "Bobsgiving" and "Bobmas".
  • Worthy Opponent: To Meggy after beating her in a shooting competition, and Fire-Forged Friends on top of that.

"You have been done a great injustice! It is my goal...No, it is my destiny! To save you from opression and return glorious anime to your kingdom!"
Click here to see his unscarred appearance before "The Internet Graveyard"

An Inkopolis-born anime artist from Japan with the power to bring whatever he draws to life, thanks to his special pen/staff, the Inkweaver. After gaining knowledge of the Mushroom Kingdom's anime ban, he offers to help in lifting it.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Growing up, he was bullied by others for liking anime. Doubly notable since he grew up in Inkopolis.
  • Art Initiates Life: Thanks to his Inkweaver, his Cloudcuckoolander creations can come to life. They vanish shortly after they are created as Axol isn't very good at creating life, though he explicitly states that's due to poor-quality ink (Inkling ink is considered the best in-universe).
  • Attention Whore: Mild example. He's not nasty about it but he does have a flair for the dramatic and he's quite hurt when Meggy shows no knowledge of or interest in who he is.
  • Berserk Button: He doesn't like being interrupted while eating, as "Mario Works At McDonalds" shows.
  • Break the Cutie:
    • The YouTube Arc was not kind to him. Thanks to Mario abusing the power of the YouTube Remote, an Oof Button took him to the Internet Graveyard, where he spent five years – which in real-time was three weeks. What's worse, Inkweaver was destroyed in the process, and Axol lost quite a bit of his sanity during his time there. He's mostly fine after Mario helped him remember himself so they could escape, but his scar is still there, Inkweaver became only good as a bludgeoning weapon for well over a year, and he probably had PTSD from aging 5 years in less than a month. Oh, and he doesn't get to defeat SMG3 in the final battle.
    • The Genesis Arc was even worse. He manages to fix Inkweaver with Mario's help in order to improve his show Two Piece, but that's where his good luck ends. Zero possesses him and uses him as a vessel to destroy the SMG4 universe and create his own. Try as Axol might to drive his friends away, Zero's influence was too strong, and in the end, Melony had to put Axol down in order to save the universe. He knew he wouldn't be able to make it, and figured he may as well tell Melony how he felt about her in his final moments.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He's eccentric, acts strongly on impulse, and his single-mindedness makes him come off as quite selfish at times, but he's insanely efficient at his craft and, though he's not very good at creating life, his powers are more than effective in battle, as his Blastoise creation is the one that ultimately takes down Desti in "The Mario Showdown". He also created the Inkweaver as a child and is able to summon Ultra Instinct Shaggy, something Francis couldn't do and was thought impossible.
  • But Now I Must Go: Flies off to parts unknown after convincing Peach to unban anime, though SMG4 and friends hope they'll see him again. Following the Anime arc, he is shown to have stayed in the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • Companion Cube: His Inkweaver pen is this to him, to the point he talks to it. Most of this could be attributed to him being stuck in the Internet Graveyard with pretty much everything either being hostile to him or unable to understand him, but even before then, he's shown safely buckling it into the bus Bob steals in the Anime Arc.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: With each new stage of his possession in the Genesis Arc, his appearance becomes more and more mutilated, starting off with the space around his eye caving in and decaying, then the entire right half of his face wasting away with teeth sticking out of his neck, then finally his entire bottom half being destroyed. His misery was thankfully ended by Melony mortally wounding him to take out Zero.
  • Demonic Possession: Zero possesses Axol in "The Day HE Arrived".
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: In "The Mario Showdown". While he means well in his quest to help Mario and company overturn the anime ban, he can be a little shortsighted and ignorant of the situation at hand. Despite Meggy explicitly telling him that neither she nor her team can help the others without getting their weapons back first, he grumbles about having to deal with Desti and her goons when they could be saving anime. Even Mario has to point out to him that there's bigger fish to fry at the moment, and it's not until Saiko says she'd prefer to help her friends first does he relent.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: He tells Melony that he loves her before telling her to kill him to save the universe.
  • Face Death with Dignity: When it becomes clear he can't be freed from Zero, Axol calmly encourages Melony to Mercy Kill him.
  • Facial Horror: The skin on half of his face disappears when Zero gets complete control over his body in "Mario and The Backrooms". He also gets conjoined horns in the shape of a 0.
  • Flanderization: As of 2021, Axol's appearances tend to focus more on his crush on Melony than his use of Inkweaver. This may be justified since he went insane and his Inkweaver was broken while he was in the Internet Graveyard. Mario even lampshades it when Axol is fixing said Inkweaver, saying "he doesn't make anime anymore, he just simps for a watermelon now."
  • Fully-Dressed Cartoon Animal: An axolotl that's fully clothed, even when he basically goes savage in the Internet Graveyard (though he does don different clothes following his time there, for some reason).
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Axol created the Inkweaver by hand when he was a child. Even after it breaks in the Internet Graveyard, he later installs a device on what's left of his pen in order to find the rest of it.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He got a scar over his right eye during his time in the Internet Graveyard. He's still a pretty friendly guy, even if he's a little crazy.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Smiles at Melony (complete with tears in his eyes) before she kills him.
  • Hope Spot: After going through a lot of trauma in the YouTube Arc, things started to look up for Axol, with him finding a love interest in Melony and getting his Inkweaver fixed so he can resume his work. All of that is ripped away when he gets possessed by Zero, ultimately leaving him an Eldritch Abomination that has to be put down in order to save the universe. And by his love Melony, no less.
  • Iconic Item: Inkweaver, the magic pen he uses to draw anime. Melony has it to remember him by, and it's implied that she may use it herself one day.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Has blue eyes and is one of the friendliest members of the cast.
  • Killed Off for Real: He's willingly killed by Melony in order to take down Zero in "War of the Fat Italians 2021", making him the first main cast member to die in the series.
  • Large Ham: He is quite… expressive.
  • Last Kiss: Melony kisses him shortly before she's forced to put him down for the sake of the universe.
  • Mercy Kill: What his death at Melony’s hands essentially was, as he was permanently bound to Zero with no way of saving him.
  • Nice Guy: He's not without his eccentricities, but he always means well and is a rather polite fellow, especially once he becomes a recurring character following the Anime Arc.
  • The Nicknamer: To literally everyone. Notable ones include "Red Tomato" (Mario), "Pickle" (Luigi), "beanie fish girl" (Meggy), "beanie human girl" after Meggy's Humanity Ensues, "Duck Nerd" (Tari), and "emo fish girl" (Desti). One of the only people he doesn't have a notable nickname for is Melony, an indicator of how much he likes her.
  • No Body Left Behind: Ax0l disintegrates after Melony is forced to Mercy Kill Axol. This would explain why he isn't given a burial like Desti and Greg before him.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Particularly in how he’s animated, being given smooth mouth movements even when his body ragdolls like the rest of the cast. This goes even further once he gets possessed by Zero, gaining the latter’s original design elements, like the zero pupil.
  • Out of Focus: Like Saiko, Axol started appearing significantly less in 2020. Hilariously lampshaded by in "Mario's Mask of Madness":
Mario: But why? He's finally an interesting character now! (cue Meggy punting Mario to the castle doors)
  • Passing the Torch: An indirect example. With Axol dead, Melony takes it upon herself to finish his anime and carry on his legacy. It's also implied that she will learn how to use Inkweaver one day.
  • Punny Name: His name is Axol because he's an axolotl.
  • Red Herring: He is implicated by Mario and co. in the disappearances of Inklings and the sudden appearance of powered-up anime characters. The ending of "The Inkling Disappearances", however, reveals that Axol is not only innocent but just as much a victim as the Inklings are.
  • Sanity Slippage: The years he spent in the Internet Graveyard didn't do much for his state of mind. He went full-on Ax-Crazy for a while until Mario snapped him out of it with his Naruto running. That's before he learned that while, to him, he was stuck in the Internet Graveyard for five years, for everyone else he had only been gone for a few weeks at most (the relevant episodes were uploaded exactly three weeks apart real time).
  • Scars Are Forever: He keeps his scar after the events of the YouTube Arc. Curiously, he loses his original scar after getting possessed by Zero at which point he has a lot more to worry about. The scar goes away when we see him in the afterlife.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: He willingly allowed Melony to end his life to stop Zero and save the universe. Too bad that only separated Niles and the actual SMG0, allowing Niles to continue his schemes. Downplayed in that while it didn't completely stop Niles, it did delay said schemes, and Niles is truly destroyed at the end of "Revelations" anyway.
  • Spanner in the Works: To both Princess Peach and Francis of the Anime Arc. Using his powered-up Inkweaver, he convinces Peach to drop the Anime ban by showing her the joys of anime. Using Meggy's ink during the Battle on Anime Island, he creates the ultimate anime creation, Ultra Instinct Shaggy, to defeat Francis's Super Saiyan Blue Goku replica, allowing Francis to be finished off by Saiko.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: His creations are not very bright, mostly due to the Inkweaver's lack of power at the time.
  • Trash of the Titans: His apartment is littered with trash, anime posters, and scrap paper. It's so bad that Bob compares it to his house.
  • Weak, but Skilled: His powers of creativity and imagination make him quite formidable when he has his Inkweaver, even if it's at less than optimal power. Without it, he is pretty much powerless. Desti's words help him grow out of this, however.
  • Worf Had the Flu: His Inkweaver operates at 5% power due to low-quality ink; this is why Axol's creations are so dumb in the first place. Fresh Inkling ink, courtesy of Meggy, brings Ink Weaver to 50% power and makes Axol's creations stronger and smarter. 100% allows him to summon the strongest of all anime creations, Ultra Instinct Shaggy.
  • Wrecked Weapon: After being stuck in the Internet Graveyard, his Inkweaver is no longer able to bring drawings to life but in a pinch it still makes a decent bludgeon. He finally manages to repair it completely in "If Mario Was In… Anime".

    Melony

Melony

Voiced by: Wolfychu, hackerling (singing voice: "Zero" rap, "WOTFI 2021"), Cintia Gallardo (Latin American Spanish dub)
First appearance: "Mario Alone" (2019, melon form), "Mario's Mask of Madness" (2020, human form)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/human_melony_wiki_render_2021.png
Click here to see her in Fierce Deity mode

Once a watermelon with Meggy's headwear, a Fierce Deity Mask bonding with her gave her a human body. She is often seen sleeping, is just as brilliant at hacking as she was in her melon form, and served as a Love Interest for Axol. Click here for her tropes in her original watermelon form.

  • Berserk Button:
    • Axol killing off Watermelon-kun to try and get her attention on Valentine's Day upsets her so much that she temporarily ends her friendship with him and hangs out with Bob instead.
    • She doesn't appreciate people touching the hedge she likes to sleep on. At first, it just made her cry a lot, but ever since the 10th anniversary special, it's been a trigger that lets her use the Fierce Deity Mask's powers.
    • As one herself, she does not like it when people cut up or eat fruit in front of her. It reaches a head in "Mario has a BBQ but he's not invited", where seeing Boopkins try to chop up a watermelon, along with a fruit salad, sends her into an Unstoppable Rage.
    • Zero becomes a massive one for her. So much so that when she is practicing to get stronger she uses wooden dummies of him, and when she taps into her Deity powers, just seeing the word "zero" causes her to destroy a Coke Zero factory. It’s understandable that she would hate Zero so much given that he is singlehandedly responsible for the death of her beloved Axol. Said button exploits this so that he would have a strong host to control.
    • She doesn't take kindly to being called a baby.
    • She becomes furious with Mario after he accidentally hurts Axol Junior, her pet Axolotl.
  • Breakout Character: Easily the member of SMG3's Anti-Cast that gained the most prominence, being the only one to avoid the fate of becoming Out of Focus while getting a new model and Character Development to boot.
  • Break the Cutie: The Genesis Arc is not kind to her – First, Axol is seemingly injured while in Zero’s Guardian pod, leaving her worried by his bedside. When he wakes up, he quickly disappears again and when he comes back, he’s fully possessed by Zero. When she hesitates to kill him, she is brought into his dimension, where Axol gives her a manga that also serves as his confession, before being thrown out and having to watch Zero start to destroy the universe. Finally, despite her best attempts, she ultimately has to put Axol down at his request, accepting his confession and kissing him goodbye.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: As a human, she's just as competent at hacking as her melon self, and she even has some access to the abilities of the Fierce Deity Mask, plus she can summon Satan or other demons with ease, but would rather take a nap most of the time. "The Bed" seems to imply that she can't use the mask's powers unless she's well-rested, and needs to build up energy via sleeping.
  • Broken Pedestal: Initially, Melony came to accept Niles as a mentor figure after he offered to teach her how to control her deity powers until Niles eventually revealed his true colors to her. That pedestal was completely obliterated when Melony later learned that not only did Niles merge with SMG0 to become the Zero she knew, but she also realized that he forced her to kill Axol after possessing him.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She's noticeably more well-endowed than the rest of the female cast (only Saiko and maybe Belle come close). Justified in a sort of punny way as she is, at heart, a watermelon.
  • Character Catchphrase: Her most common vocalization tends to be an upbeat "Yay!"
  • Character Development: Becomes a little more serious about things after Axol's death. Though, she still acts like a child.
  • Cope by Creating: She draws anime like Axol to honor his memory after his death.
  • Cute Mute: Downplayed. While Melony is capable of speech as a humanoid girl, most of the time she mainly communicates through Voice Grunting rather than text-based sentences. She is the only major character besides Boopkins and Bob (who are always fully voiced) to often lack subtitles.
  • The Cutie: She is an eternally sleepy half-watermelon-half-Fierce-Deity-hybrid who easily has the most Animesque faces of the human cast.
  • Daddy's Girl: She's close to her father, as shown when she thanks him for setting up her birthday party in "The Watermelon Man" (her father being the titular watermelon man)note .
  • Deity of Human Origin: Since she attained her human form by wearing the Fierce Deity Mask, she technically qualifies as a demigoddess, because the masks grant their powers and partial appearance/physiology to whoever wears them. She uses her newfound powers for the first time in the 10th anniversary special.
  • Deus Exit Machina: Sleeps through the entirety of It's Gotta Be Perfect, preventing Bob from calling her for help.
  • Divergent Character Evolution: Melony started out as a foil to Meggy, the main difference being the obvious. After the YouTube Arc, her status as Meggy's foil became irrelevant, and the new human design she gained is vastly different from the Meggy stand-in she started as – notably she lost Meggy's headgear. She does still have some foil-traits though, mainly being a Lazy Bum while Meggy is an Action Girl.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After going through hell and back in the Cosmology saga (especially with Axol’s possession and death), Melony is able to overcome her demons (both figuratively and literally) gaining full control of her deity powers, allowing her to graduate from Omnia Academy with a stronger resolve to live out her life to the fullest before she reunites with Axol in the afterlife.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: Even though she’s friendly with just about everyone, including Satan and the Grim Reaper, she has nothing but hatred towards Niles after she was forced to kill Axol because of him.
  • Foil: If she wasn't already this as a watermelon, even her human transformation is one to Meggy.
    • While Meggy's change was brought on by a traumatic event, reshaped her personality, and took Meggy nearly a year to get used to, Melony's change happened via the usual shenanigans one would expect when watching an SMG4 video, with Melony barely caring about her sudden change (she was only excited for a couple seconds) as she got used to it almost immediately (though it's not likely she had much personality back when she was still in her inaminate watermelon form to be reshaped anyway), and continuing to do nothing until the plot comes to her. Meggy has multiple lines and roles while Melony sticks to voice clips and her sleepy hacker role.
    • The 10th anniversary special reveals that this even applies to their methods of combat. Whereas Melony requires tapping into the power of the mask animating her to stand a chance in battle, Meggy is a Badass Normal who wins fights with her own athleticism and marksmanship. Additionally, Meggy had Inkling abilities prior to becoming human, and took a bit of time to adjust to this shift, while Melony initally couldn't even move (not that that's changed much given her Lazy Bum qualities) before gaining godly power, only to very rarely use it due to not being a combatant often.
  • Furry Reminder: It can be easy to forget she's a watermelon turned demigoddess but she will make it known if you forget at an inopportune moment.
    • If she sees any fruit (especially her own kind) getting hurt, she gets pissed.
    • While tormenting her, Niles asks if she was cut would she bleed blood or melon juice.
    • While trapped in a mental prison created by Niles, she sees a group of talking watermelons claiming to be her family, which confuses her more than it unnerves her as watermelons don't have parents.
  • Genki Girl: In her humanoid form, when she's not being a sleepyhead, she can get excited easily.
  • Genius Ditz: She's very good at hacking, but she's usually lazy, immature, and ditzy.
  • Goo-Goo-Godlike: Downplayed in that she's physically an adult but, in spite of wielding the powers of the Fierce Deity Mask, Melony behaves like a young child and does not have the mental maturity to deal with the horrors of the dark web.
SMG4: "What?! But she literally has the power of a god!"
Axol: "Yeah? But she also has the innocence of a five year old."
  • Hartman Hips: She has a small waist and big hips.
  • Helium Speech: Although no helium is involved, her voice is very high pitched and childlike, and has been described as such by Niles in Mario's Bus Trip to insult her.
Niles: So is your voice naturally that high or did you suck in too much helium?
    • This is of course a reference to Melony's actress, whose voice really is naturally that high-pitched and she's made a few very personal videos on her own channel about coming to terms with it.
  • Her Heart Will Go On: After Axol’s death, she becomes a manga artist to honour him, and vows to stay strong. In subsequent years we occasionally see her drawing in a notebook.
  • The Hero: Shares the role with SMG4 in the Cosmology Lore Trilogy, being Niles’ third most personal enemy behind SMG1 and SMG2, as well as being the main protagonist of the Revelations Arc.
  • Heroic BSoD: At the end of War of the Fat Italians 2021, after being forced to kill Axol, causing her to break into tears and cry, and spending a few days in isolation trying to finish his manga before the rest of the gang show up to cheer her up.
  • Kill the Ones You Love: She is forced to kill Axol at the end of the Genesis Arc in order to stop Zero and save the universe, leaving her heartbroken and suffering a Heroic BSoD.
  • Last Kiss: She gives Axol a final kiss goodbye before she Mercy Kills him.
  • Lazy Bum: Continuing her status as Meggy's Foil, her human self spends most of her time sleeping. That being said, she's still fully capable of helping the rest of the gang.
  • Leitmotif: "Piranha Plant's Lullaby" is often played when she naps.
  • Love Interest: To Axol.
  • Morphic Resonance: She can turn back into a normal watermelon at will, but part of her hair is still visible.
  • Nice Girl: She'll be anyone's friend and help out those in need, but don't expect her to hold back if you get on her bad side.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: She’s a hacker watermelon. As of "Mario’s Mask of Madness", she’s now a sleepy hacker watermelon demigoddess human.
  • Odd Friendship: With Bob. In "To Become A God", she approached him for help on mastering her Deity powers – this makes perfect sense considering he and her mask come from the same game, and he is much less of a jerk to her than he is the rest of the cast. Notably they have each other's phone numbers.
  • An Odd Place to Sleep: One of her main traits. Just about anything and everything can be made into a proper bed for her. A particular favorite place of hers to sleep is a hedge on the grounds of Peach's castle.
  • Out of Focus: She got hit with this hard after the Revelations Arc: she sits out the entire Lawsuit Arc and even gets killed and subsequently revived at the climax, sleeps through the entirety of "IT'S GOTTA BE PERFECT", unable to help Mario and the gang take on the Demonic Goop destroying the castle, and even gets curb-stomped by Luigi.exe in "Every Luigi Is Personalized".
  • Plant Person: In a sense, she is this due to her watermelon origins. She has no outward signs of it beyond the marks on her cheeks shaped like watermelon seeds.
  • Powerful and Helpless: In "WOTFI 2021". Melony has the power of the Fierce Deity Mask and is probably the strongest of the main cast, but by the time she reaches Axol, Zero's possession is too deep rooted. Her sword just impotently bounces off as she tries in vain to hack him free. In the end, all she can do to free Axol from the possession is Mercy Kill him.
  • Prone to Tears: Melony is prone to childish crying when things don't work out for her, although she slowly grows out of this, which makes her true grief at Axol's death all the more heartbreaking as she hysterically sobs.
  • The Quiet One: She's fully capable of speech as a human, espcially when she is the focused character in a video, but still doesn't talk much.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Downplayed. Her human form has red eyes (because watermelon) and she wields the powers of a god, but is almost heartbreakingly innocent. Her Fierce Deity however, which is initially a Superpowered Evil Side, averts this, having black eyes with white sclera instead.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Shortly after Axol's death, Mario wished her to have a pet axolotl in "If Mario Was In… Nickelodeon". Although she has no clue where it came from, she appreciates the gift, named it "Axol Junior", and is seen with it in subsequent episodes.
  • Sleepyhead: Her human self seems to spend most of her time not involved in antics asleep. Melony's first appearance as a human has her sleeping before going to finding somewhere else to rest and settling with a hedge outside Peach's castle.
  • Suddenly Speaking: Downplayed in "Mario's Mask of Madness" where her only spoken word is 'No'. "The Melony Felony" features the first notable sentences from her… but they're an odd mishmash of English clips from Japanese VTubers (notably Korone Inugami, whose voice is used for the nightclub scene) and Wolfychu's custom lines – this episode is where she says Axol's name for the first time.
    • "WHAT IF…?" is a more straight example, as she has the most lines of dialogue (fully-voiced, at that) out of any episode, even telling an entire story in one segment. Starting with "The Final Piece", she consistently speaks in full sentences and continues to do so after the Genesis Arc even though her sentences aren't always fully voiced. This is evidently due to the difficulty of getting Wolfychu in to record on short notice, as she's said publicly several times she adores Melony and enjoys voicing her.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: As it turns out, what we've seen from her prior to "To Become A God" was only a fraction of her power. Allowing her entire personality to be hijacked by the Fierce Deity Mask brings out her full potential at the cost of her compassion and the ability to reason. She learns to control it later on.
  • Talking to Plants: "Mario Goes To College" implies she can talk to fruit. She is a watermelon, after all.
  • Terse Talker: Her human form rarely spoke outside of single-word sentences early on. This changed later on.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: She may have the powers of the Fierce Deity, but proves to be very incompetent without them.
  • Unwitting Pawn: By learning to control her deity powers, it gave Niles a head start when he finally possessed her.
  • Wardrobe Flaw Of Characterisation: Wears socks but no shoes for some reason. Turns out that they simply forgot to give her shoes and Kevin didn't notice until reacting to her human debut.
  • Womanchild: As a humanoid girl (especially in "The Melony Felony"), she is shown to be very childish and immature, such as crying like a baby at times, pouting at Axol after his "special" where he "kills" Melon-kun, not knowing the concept of drinking booze, and folding the instructions on how to make a bed into a paper hat. This proves to be a problem when she's trying to learn to control her Fierce Deity powers.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Tapping into her full power (allowing the Fierce Deity to possess her) results in Melony destroying anything that reminds her of Zero along with anything that tries to get in her way, plus becoming almost completely emotionless in the process. She gets better at controlling her power later on, but there are still occasions where she will come close to killing her friends if they provoke her, particularly when SMG3 gets greedy and threatens Mario for "unlimited power". By the end of the Revelations Arc, she has full control over her abilities.
