Normal Characters

    Rocks

Rocks

First appearance: 'The SwitcherooOveralls' (2011)note
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rocks_wiki_render_2021.png
"Did somebody say...WIZARD?"
A sentient rock wizard who helped out the main cast in the earlier bloopers.
  • Advertised Extra: Despite not appearing as often, he is displayed alongside the main cast in the channel banner.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: He's a rock.
  • Art Evolution: From "The Mario Hustle" onward, his species is represented by a 3D model rather than a 2D sprite. He occasionally still uses his sprite, though.
  • Companion Cube: To Mario in "Mario Gets Stuck On An Island".
  • A Dog Named "Dog": He's a rock named Rocks. It's also the name of the species he belongs to as well.
  • Out of Focus: Hasn't appeared as often recently, though he still makes appearances here and there.
  • A Wizard Did It: Oftentimes, he's the cause.

    Jeeves

Jeeves

First appearance: 'Mario's Fancy Dinner' (2018)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jeeves_wiki_render_2021.png
A sentient fork that serves as a butler of sorts and gets angry rather easily.
  • And I Must Scream: See Forced Transformation.
  • Anti-Hero: Of the Pragmatic variety. He's mostly benevolent and even when he's in an antagonistic role for an episode he's still rather polite and may be justified in his actions. That being said, he's got a bit of a temper, runs his milk businesses similar to that of a criminal enterprise and he's not above using threats and violence to get what he wants.
  • The Bus Came Back: His last major role was in "Super Mario Taxi" and he wouldn't make another appearance after that until a brief cameo in "Mario VS Siren Head".
  • Butt-Monkey: Jeeves is literally this and only this in 2020, as all of his appearances that year involve him getting harmed in some way.
  • Demoted to Extra: As of 2020, Jeeves is a background character used for certain gags, all of them in his expense. This is finally reversed in "Stupid Mario Golf", where he's a central character to the plot as the host of the golf tournament.
  • Don't Make Me Take My Belt Off!: Threatens to give Luigi his "signature spanking" in "Mario Goes to the Fridge to Get a Glass Of Milk" before the Demon-cow interrupts. In a later episode he claims he learned his ass-beating skills from Baldi himself.
  • Enraged by Idiocy: He does not like incompetence, which makes Mario the worst kind of person for him to be around.
  • Fake Shemp: Uses Tingle's voice clips.
  • Forced Transformation: Gets transformed by Matt into plane tickets to Brazil at the end of "Stupid Mario Golf".
  • The Jeeves: It's in the name.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • In "Mario Goes to the Fridge to Get a Glass Of Milk". While forcing Mario, Luigi and Toad to work on his farm via gunpoint is rather extreme, he's within his rights to do so since they attempt to steal his milk under false pretenses and tip over an entire tank's worth of milk, which can be worth anywhere from hundreds of thousands to millions in real life. And that's not even mentioning the milk that got destroyed by Mario and Toad when they chase down Luigi.
    • Jeeves ordering his goons to snuff out Mario and Tari's lemonade stand is rather comical, doubly so since Mario was doing a good job kneecapping his own progress via initially selling pee as lemonade and harassing potential customers. Before all of that, however, he nicely asked them to move their stand so that it's not right in front of his milk cafe, and he even offered to forgive Mario for ruining his milk business in the past if he did so. Hard to fault Jeeves for destroying it when Mario needlessly refuses to comply and insults his business.
  • Jerkass to One: He tends to be very mean to Mario, due to having a strong dislike of his idiocy.
  • Kick the Dog: Sending his goons to blow up Mario's lemonade stand. While Mario brought it on himself, it was still rather extreme and poor Tari can only cry over the hard work she put in to make it even functional.
  • Living Prop: As of 2020, he has become simply a non-speaking sentient fork used punching bag for slapstick gags.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: Like Kermit, Po, and Dumbledore, he seems to have a different job every episode. He has been a waiter, math teacher, umpire, painter, milk factory owner, and news reporter among other things.
  • Nice Guy: To his customers, Toadsworth, Waluigi and his milk men, less so to Mario.
  • Out of Focus: Save for an easily missable cameo in "The Floor Is Lava," he hasn't appeared in Season 12 at all.
  • Suddenly Shouting: Calm and polite one minute, screaming at everyone the next.
  • Those Two Guys: With Toadsworth in "The Most Important Thing".
  • Unexplained Recovery: Somehow recovers from Matt turning him into tickets.

    Hal Monitor

Hal Monitor

First appearance: "Mario School Club" (2020)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hal_monitor_wiki_render_2021_8.png
"Please don't do that."
A computer-faced security guard who wants everything in order. His name was originally "Mr. Hall Monitor" before being changed to "Hal Monitor" in "Officer Meggy".
  • And I Must Scream: The series goes both ways with this. In "Officer Meggy", he could still see and hear everything around him when he was offline. In "WotFI 2018, he didn't know Saiko and Anti-Shroomy were doing "very illegal things" while he was offline. He was "napping" on the latter occasion, so that might be the main difference.
  • Berserk Button: He hates disorder.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: There's hints that Hal's worldview is a little sideways compared to most characters, due in part to being seemingly human but with a monitor for a head. In "Officer Meggy", for example, he considers the computer monitors being smuggled to be human, up to calling their smuggling human trafficking, and his methods of dealing with crime and repeat offenders are weird to the point the Meggy questions his logic, but they DO get results. It puts a lot of his actions into perspective; as if he genuinely believes that he is doing what is right to him, no matter what anyone else would think.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He shows up just in the nick of time to save Mario from the Grand Council of Tax Fraud, who are attempting to execute Mario by having a giant Yoshi with a spiky butt sit on him. Mr. Monitor lifts the giant thing off them while saying, "PLEASE. DO. NOT. DO. THAT." Then he hurls the giant Yoshi into the sky miles away before turning to the other Yoshis, wielding dual shotguns! The original Yoshi is so scared after Mr. Monitor's feat of strength that he craps out about 3 dozen eggs!
Mr. Monitor: Time to pay your taxes, bois!
  • The Bus Came Back: "Cooking with Mario and Bowser: World Tour" marked his first appearance in months aside from bloopers with fan-submitted content.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Please don't do that" and anything with the word "illegal".
  • Cold Ham: He can't really change the emotion in his voice due to him having a Synthetic Voice Actor, he more than makes up for it in what he says and the actions he does.
  • Composite Character: While the head is original, Mr. Monitor's hat is used from the Pyroland Protector model and his body is from the National Bank Security playermodel in Garry's Mod.
  • Convenient Replacement Character: He first began to appear when the Mario-recolour policemen were being put Out of Focus, and took on their role to become the Rabid Cop who focuses on Disproportionate Retribution. He even ended up getting put Out of Focus just like them.
  • A Day in the Limelight: In "Officer Meggy", where he trains her how to be a cop.
  • Disappeared Dad: His dad is revealed to have passed away in "Mario Runs Out Of Toilet Paper".
  • The Dreaded: The main cast was terrified of him in his first appearance. But much like Saiko, less people are afraid of him as he gets more involved in the series.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Apparently, not even demons are willing to face him. A Pride Demon from the world of Dragon Age goes right back to the Fade after hearing him threaten to "tear some anuses."
Pride Demon: I don't need to see no more shit down here!
  • Hypocritical Humor: He has probably broken every law against Police Brutality ever made while enforcing law and justice.
  • Lethal Chef: His "prison sludge" is so bad, Mario and Bowser-whom Hal made taste it in the first place-required a trip to the hospital, presumably to have their stomachs pumped. Justified in that Hal himself reveals that one of the ingredients that regularly goes into it is cyanide.
  • Logical Weakness: Spraying water at him would naturally electrocute him, since water and monitors is not a good combination. Strangely, water didn't hurt him in "Officer Meggy"... then it renders him offline later in that particular video.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: He was a hall monitor in his first appearance and a police officer in his second onwards.
  • Nightmare Fuel Station Attendant: Sure he can be friendly with people, but the minute he senses any sort of illegal activity, he switches into Rabid Cop mode and punishes the offender with extreme prejudice.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Unlike the other participants in "If Mario Was In Friday Night Funkin' 2" who rap against their opponents as one would expect, Hal has none of it and goes into a shootout with Tankman, though unlike Chris and Swagmaster, he succeeds in gunning down Tankman.
  • Not So Above It All:
    • He's seen enjoying Axol's anime Two Piece in the 10th anniversary special. With his microwave wife.
    • He catfishes Mario and Whimpu by pretending to be Melony.
  • No Waterproofing in the Future: Played straight for the most part. Oddly zigzagged in "Officer Meggy" where he was knocked out by a spray bottle in the same episode where he emerged from a body of water.
  • Order Is Not Good: Will go out of his way to target you if you're messing with the local ordinances.
  • Out of Focus: Hasn’t appeared much as of June, presumably due to police brutality being a major problem during that month. He has been pretty much non-existant for 2021, barring small cameos and his appearances in the 10th anniversary special, which, even then, are brief. His first major 2021 appearance is in "If Mario Was in Friday Night Funkin' 2", where he gets into a shootout with Tankman.
  • Pet the Dog: After Mario helps him in taking down the Grand Council of Tax Fraud, Mr. Monitor allows Mario's earlier tax fraud to slip past.
  • Police Brutality: Occasionally engages in this, often made worse by his Blue-and-Orange Morality. Meggy lampshades that his methods seem illegal, only for him to claim that "nothing's illegal when you're on the side of justice," which she finds reasonable enough.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: "Your free subscription to life has ended" in "If Mario Was In...Cyberpunk 2077"
  • Punny Name: His name is an obvious pun on "Hall Monitor", and may also be a reference to the HAL 9000.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: He basically fills the role of the Mario-like policemen—arresting characters whose current Zany Scheme get in the way of the law.
  • Synthetic Voice Actor: He, along with Chris, Swagmaster, and Grand Dad all use Speakonia for their voices.
  • TV Head Robot: Whether or not he's a robot is questionable, but he fits the appearance.
  • Visual Pun: "Hal Monitor" is a literal hall monitor.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: To his credit, his goal of cracking down on illegal activity in SMG4's version of the Mushroom Kingdom is admirable. Would be even more admirable if he wasn't so creepy and excessive about it.

    Karen

Karen

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/karen_blender_render.png
Click here to see her when she's off-duty

Voiced by: DustyOldRoses (voice clips), Elsie Lovelock (WOTFI rap, certain episodes)
First appearance: "The Mario Documentary" (2022)

An unhappy cat who works various counter jobs.

  • Apathetic Clerk: She's a miserable employee who's completely unamused by Mario's antics.
  • Arch-Enemy: She seems to be a particularly favorite target for Wheeler.
  • Berserk Button: Seriously, just... don't mess with children around her. She really doesn't take it well.
  • Burger Fool: Judging by her constant annoyed expression, working at Starbucks isn't exactly the most pleasant job in the world.
  • Catgirl: She is a humanoid cat, much like Whisk.
  • Cats Are Mean: Downplayed. She's an anthropomorphic cat lady that's usually bitter and usually uses a shotgun to solve her problems, but she only uses it on people that annoy her or hurt her children.
  • A Day in the Limelight: She takes center stage in "How To Train Your Mario".
  • Disproportionate Retribution: She responds to Mario accidentally hitting JubJub with a bottle of laundry detergent by shooting him.
  • Dreary Half-Lidded Eyes: Her default expression, which goes nicely with her constantly-miserable personality.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She made brief gag appearances in "The Mario Documentary" and "Mario Goes To The Zoo", but didn't have a major role until "Mario Does His Laundry".
  • Enraged by Idiocy: Even though she's a lot less expressive than Jeeves, she's probably even less tolerant of Mario's stupidity. She pulls a shotgun on him when he gets behind the counter, and stealthily moves his tent to a garbage dump when he camps inside the Starbucks. Of course, when children are involved with Mario's antics, that's when she's more expressive.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Exemplified in Mario Goes On A Diet, where she is shown to have an unnerved expression on her face when she sees Mario laughing insanely and moves her kids aside to keep them from seeing what's going to happen next.
  • Fake Shemp: Her voice clips (when Elsie Lovelock isn't voicing the character) come from a soundpack for a female version of Scout, made by DustyOldRoses.
  • Friend to All Children: Children seem to be the only thing that can lift her otherwise sour mood. Harming them is definitely one way to get on her bad side.
  • Fully-Dressed Cartoon Animal: She's a cat that wears a shirt, pants, shoes, and overalls, though she doesn't have overalls in scenes where she's off-duty. Oh, and she has a bowtie on her tail.
  • Funny Animal: She's an anthropomorphic cat who works various counter jobs.
  • Hero Antagonist: Whenever she starts using force, it's almost always because somebody (Mario) is screwing around, which both impedes other patrons and annoys her.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: During "The Meme Games 2022" challenge, "Don't Piss Off Karen", she was willingly happy to cook JubJub a cheeseburger when he asks for one, despite telling Bob that she doesn't sell them due to working at a coffee shop.
  • Ironic Name: The name "Karen" is often used to disparage entitled privileged women who complain about not getting exactly what they want. This cat is basically the opposite: a miserable Struggling Single Mother working multiple jobs who's exactly the kind of person a stereotypical "Karen" would be complaining to. "The Meme Games 2022" furthers the irony by revealing that she's the manager of Starbucks.
  • Like a Son to Me: She grows so attached to JubJub that she all but says that he reminds her of her own children.
  • Mama Bear: She goes on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge on people who harm children in her presence, regardless of whether they're hers or not.
  • Mentor Archetype: To Luigi in "How To Train Your Mario". When Mario acts more childish than usual, she helps him put a stop to his brother's behavior and grow out of being an Extreme Doormat. Ironically, Luigi was the one employing her during this period.
  • New Jobs As The Plot Demands: Justified, as she’s a Struggling Single Mother.
  • No Full Name Given: Her last name is yet to be revealed.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: She's not the first OC in the series to be a Funny Animal, but she looks much different than Axol, more closely resembling a character from Animal Crossing. Funnily enough, her kids not only resemble those kinds of characters more closely than her, but speak in that game's Simlish.
  • Not Afraid to Die: During the War of the Fat Italians 2022 rap, she sings a line supporting Lawyer Kong's side, who looks utterly baffled to see her helping him out. He's not controlling her at all, she's just completely onboard with him erasing her from her miserable existence.
  • Not So Above It All: Who would have guessed that someone like Karen would go crazy for balls of yarn? Then again, she is a cat.
  • Not So Stoic: She normally does everything with a bored expression on her face, but she loosens up when adoring JubJub and gets very angry when Mario accidentally hurts him.
  • Perpetual Frowner: She doesn’t smile very much. Not even the threat of being burned at the stake by pigs seems to faze her.
  • Southies: She has a distinct Boston accent. Karen also deals with obnoxious customers using a shotgun, making her a dangerous person to piss off.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Her children have the same blue and white color scheme as her.
  • Struggling Single Mother: Revealed to be this in “Mario Does His Laundry”. It's shown firsthand in "How To Train Your Mario".
  • Teleportation: Shown to be capable of doing this in “Mario Tries Life Hacks 2 ft. Luigi”, as she teleports away from Mario due to him attempting to lick her.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Fish. Her house has a giant fish statue that's apparently a decoration, and she and her kids eat fish while watching TV... which also shows fish.
  • When She Smiles: After being a Perpetual Frowner for two episodes, she finally smiles in her third appearance, “Mario Does His Laundry”, when showing empathy and compassion for JubJub Boopkins.

    Kaizo Koorumaniru

Kaizo Koorumaniru

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaizo2_50.png
Voiced by: Toshio Furukawa & Hiroshi Kamiya (voice clips)
First appearance: "DO NOT ENTER" (2022)

A high school boy found in Kevin's School, the same game out of which Fishy Boopkins pulled Saiko. He too is pulled out thanks to Tari's game-warping abilities, and now he wants to relive the glory days of "doing illegal shit" with Saiko.

  • Achilles' Heel: Cute, wholesome, and otherwise Sickeningly Sweet things seem to physically hurt him.
  • Animation Bump: He has a noticeable spike in animation when he speaks. Though to be fair, both Meggy and Saiko received this treatment as well in the videos leading up to his debut.
  • Ax-Crazy: He cuts off Mario's head in his very first scene, and doesn't get any less insane from there.
  • The Bus Came Back: After months of cameo appearances following his reconciliation with Saiko, most of them silent, Kaizo finally gets to have an important plot role again in "All I Want For Christmas Is Mario To FREAKIN BEHAVE".
  • Character Development: As of "The Meme Games 2022", Kaizo becomes less willing to resort to violence and is more cooperative.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: If you consider the KS-2 "mini-arc" to be the direct follow-up of the Revelations Arc, then he is this to Niles. They both share some similarities, being two young Delinquents with demonic influences in high school and college, respectively, looking for trouble and causing problems for the SMG4 crew. In addition, they get into girls' heads (literally in Niles' case) in order to achieve their dreams, which both happen to involve reliving their glory days. But with that said, there are many differences between them in terms of appearances, relationships, actions, and ultimate fates. For starters, Kaizo can interact with the SMG4 crew fine, but Niles, while he was in Melony's mind, doesn't do so until near the end. While they are both Older Than They Look, Niles is an ageless being that existed long before the SMG4 series began, whereas Kaizo is a Refugee from TV Land that's been in a video game for who knows how long. More importantly, while both of their endgoals mean going back to the old days, Niles wants to create the "perfect" universe with SMG0, whereas Kaizo just wants to cause destruction for the sake of it. After the girls they manipulated break free from their influence, Niles attempts to kill Melony as Zero, while Kaizo simply breaks off his friendship with Saiko and tries to get into a band without her help. And finally, while Niles is too far gone and dies before he gets the chance to right the wrongs he did, Kaizo ultimately reconciles with Saiko and agrees to reform KS-2 the right way.
  • The Corrupter: He tries to bring Saiko back to her destructive and "edgy" self, though The Power of Friendship ultimately prevails.
  • Darker and Edgier: Kaizo is a complete parody of this trope. He's an Emo Teen who's obssessed with being edgy and contrarian, commits absurdly over-the-top crimes, dresses in red and black, and is physically harmed by cuteness.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He may be into rock, booze, and illegal shit, but even he can't help but give a horrified look during "The Meme Games 2022" as Donkey Kong prepares to fill his ass with a metal beam.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Kaizo can't seem to understand how Saiko's performance at the end of "Mario Gets Lit" is able to outclass his own without using anger.
  • Evil Cannot Stand Cuteness: He's literally repelled by cute and wholesome things, like how a vampire is repelled by crosses.
  • Fake Shemp: His voice clips are taken from Portgas D. Ace and Trafalgar Law.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: When he discovers that Saiko's not in the game, he starts to have a mental breakdown before the game glitches out.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: All the bad things Saiko did in her first few appearances? They were a result of this guy's Toxic Friend Influence.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After the events of "The Meme Games 2022", he makes peace with Saiko and, while still a wild delinquent, is generally no longer hostile to the rest of the gang.
  • Horned Humanoid: His design shows that he's sprouted horns from his head.
  • Jerkass: Kaizo is rude, arrogant, prone to violence, and a criminal – in short, everything Saiko was before her character development. He gets a bit better after teaming up with Saiko to defeat Mario in "The Meme Games 2022", but he's still not winning any "Friend of the Year" awards any time soon.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Prior to his Character Development, he isn't very cooperative with people who aren't like him and prefers to go straight to the point while dragging people he doen't like down. It gets him pretty far until "The Meme Games 2022" where every attempt at using this strategy ended with his own misfortune except for the one where Saiko saves him from the Chomp.
  • Out of Focus: After the KS-2 storyline, the show barely uses him barring quick cameos in crowd shots. This is especially noticeable in WOTFI 2022, where he voices his desire to participate in the challenges, but doesn't show up in even one, yet is one of the exhausted jurors seen in the rap battle's intro.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: He has a very immature idea of what constitutes as "cool" – namely heavy metal, swords, and illegal shit.
  • Punny Name: Similarly to Saiko, Kaizo's surname is a pun on "cool man".
  • Platonic Life-Partners: He's this to Saiko. They briefly had a falling out when Kaizo found out that Saiko underwent Character Development, but they became friends again after "The Meme Games 2022".
  • Refugee from TV Land: Much like with Saiko before him, he was originally a game character from Fishy Boopkins' copy of "Kevins' School". This time instead of using a Magikoopas' wand to bring him out, Saiko uses Taris' Meta Runner Arm to pull Kaizo out of the game.
  • Rotten Rock & Roll: He's a hooligan with a desire to both wreak havoc and rock out.
  • Satellite Character: Although he has some personality traits unique to his own, he mostly serves as a Foil to Saiko and a vector for her development and he always appears with her. He doesn't develop much of a relationship with the other cast members.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: To be fair to him, it's very unlikely any of us would sound much better if an extremely powerful gorilla rammed a metal beam in our ass.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When it becomes clear that Saiko will not be going back to the psycho she once was, Kaizo severs ties with her.
  • Shadow Archetype: He represents what Saiko could have been like if she hadn't gone through Character Development. While Saiko grew out of her violent obssessive behavior, Kaizo never matured in the years he's been inside the game.
  • Teens Are Monsters: Same deal as Saiko, but even worse.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: He causes Saiko to briefly revert to her old destructive ways once he comes into the real world. Fortunately, Saiko's friends manage to snap her out of it, but this causes Kaizo to end his friendship with her for a while.

    Depresso

Depresso

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d1bc40da_5f36_495f_8e02_9da6a794a6a8.png
"Looking for a clown girlfriend! Good rates!"
Voiced by: Wiseguy
First appearance: "Mario Does It To Em" (2022)

A Sad Clown whose tears pollute the water supply in "Clown Fever", causing everyone who drinks it to turn into a clown if they make a fool of themselves.

  • Ambiguously Evil: There are times where he's just minding his own business or is a victim of circumstance, but he's oftentimes the cause of an episode's conflict, and never once does he feel remorse for his actions or try to fix things when that happens, not even in his first (proper) appearance, when he can reasonably be called depressed. This is all ignoring times where he intentionally screwed people over (such as "Mario Screws In A Lightbulb" and "The Infestation"). It gets to a point where the Villains Anonymous meeting from "You Used To Be Cool..." calls him a "questionably innocent civilian".
  • Ascended Extra: He's been making much more frequent appearances after the SMG4 Crew move into the Showgrounds.
  • Benevolent Boss: He was shown to be a caring leader of the rats, to the point of crying when SMG3 tortures one of them in "You Used To Be Cool..."
  • Butt-Monkey: Nothing goes right for him in his debut episode; Geiru Toneido breaks up with him due to him not being a good enough clown, he gets humiliated by Mario and SMG4, and when his girlfriend finally comes back, she dumps him again and hooks up with SMG4.
  • Dumpster Dive: He apparently gets food and possessions from the garbage, as seen in episodes that focus on the Showgrounds prior to the castle's finished construction.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He can be seen among the audience in "Mario Does It To Em" before his proper debut in "Clown Fever".
  • The Eeyore: He's perpetually miserable, as the name suggests.
  • "Kick Me" Prank: He has a "Kick Me" sign taped to his back as part of his Sad Clown theme, though no one actually tries to kick him at any point.
  • Meaningful Name: With a name like "Depresso", he must be a little ball of sunshine, right?
  • Monster Clown: Seems to be slipping into this territory after his Sanity Slippage in his debut episode. He sics King Boo on Mario and SMG4 in "Mario Screws In A Lightbulb", he's happy to find a noose in "Every Luigi Is Personalized", he apparently murders people in the new castle's basement in "THE NEW CASTLE!!", and he leads an army of rats to Take Over the World in "The Infestation".
  • Sad Clown: His primary motif. Depresso is a clown who's depressed due to his girlfriend leaving him.
  • Sanity Slippage: At the end of "Clown Fever", all the crap he's gone through throughout the episode causes him to snap and start going the way of The Joker.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: A grumpy and antisocial little man who's not that close to the SMG4 Gang, is mean and even downright cruel to people, and just happens to be living at the castle? Are we talking about Depresso or are we talking about Toad?
  • Synthetic Voice Actor: His voice is Voiceforge's "Wiseguy" voice, the same one used for Sergeant Mark.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: He's often ignored or abused by other characters he interacts with, but the rats who took him in in "The Infestation" understand his feelings and find his jokes funny. Too bad he ended up using them for evil...
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: He starts out as... well, depressed, and it seemed like all Mario and SMG4 had to do to fix the clown epidemic he unwittingly caused was to cheer him up. Their failure to do so by the end causes his Sanity Slippage, and from there, he mostly spends his time being rude to people and even Ambiguously Evil. That's not even getting into his Big Bad role in "The Infestation".
  • Too Kinky to Torture: SMG3's attempts to torture him in "You Used To Be Cool..." don't yield any results, much to the disappointment of the Villains Anonymous group he was trying to impress. It's only when he kicks Depresso's rat (by accident, mind you) that he gets anywhere.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom:
    • The conflict of "Clown Fever" was started by Depresso after he cried into the kingdom's water supply, infecting it with Clown Fever.
    • Happens again in "Every Luigi Is Personalized", where he unknowingly kicks the corrupted copy of Super Mario 64 into an outhouse, creating a portal that Luigi unwittingly traps himself in.
    • Happens yet again in "Mario VS Skibidi Toilet", where his flushing Prime energy drinks—glowing energy drinks—down the toilet makes them come to life.

WARNING: Spoilers Off for the entirety of both the Cosmology Saga and PUZZLEVISION. You Have Been Warned.

Cosmology Saga Characters

Debuted in the Genesis Arc
    The Hobos

SuperMemeGuardian1 and SuperMemeGuardian2 (SMG1 and SMG2)

Do you have a moment to talk about our lord and savior 4?
Click here to see their unscarred appearances
Voiced by: Paul Stylianou/MediExcalibur2012 (SMG1) and Robyn Barry-Cotter (SMG2)
First appearance: "The Pursuit of Happiness" (2021)

An odd pair of hobos who worship the number 4. They initially show up as background characters in a couple of episodes, but they end up becoming major players in the Cosmology saga.

  • Alternate Self: If Spudnick is indeed an alternate version of Mario, then these two are likely alternate versions of SMG3 and SMG4.
  • Arc Number: They worship the number 4. As in, SMG4.
  • Bash Brothers: The duo are almost never seen apart, and they sacrifice themselves to stop Zero dead in his tracks as a team, with the main cast defending them.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • After leaving after the end of the Genesis arc, the two make their first post-Genesis arc appearance in "Mario Suffers Infinite Detention."
    • "All I Want For Christmas Is Mario To FREAKIN BEHAVE" marks their first major appearance since the "Revelations" movie. More specifically, it's their first major post-Cosmology Saga appearance.
    • They return once again in "We Interrupt This Broadcast" in preparation for the SMG4 Movie "Western Spaghetti".
    • They return again and get a big role in "SMG4 and SMG3 Are Forced To Hold Hands". Lampshaded by SMG4.
  • But Now I Must Go: After vanquishing Zero once and for all, they part ways with the SMG4 crew amicably.
  • The Cameo: SMG1 was the one who was telling the short story about how dinosaurs went extinct in "Mario Tries Life Hacks". Notably, this is the first episode where only one of the pair appears.
  • The Cassandra: All their talk of their lord and savior 4 was them trying to warn SMG4 of an upcoming disaster, but nobody listened because they seemed to be crazy hobos.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Initially they’re purely just Plucky Comic Relief who worship the number 4, but turns out they’re the Greater-Scope Paragons of the whole series.
  • Dash Attack: What seems to be their primary form of offense when not using their meme manipulation powers. It's surprisingly effective.
  • Demoted to Extra: After having been revealed to be more than extras in the Genesis Arc, they actually went back to being extras after the arc's conclusion, appearing very rarely and with smaller roles in the series, SMG1's latest appearance having him tell a story about how dinosaurs went extinct to Yoshis. They don't get a major role together until "SMG4 and SMG3 Are Forced To Hold Hands".
  • The Dividual: They both have a similar personality, without much to distinguish them. It's subverted in "The Other Universe" where we see some of their lives before their universe was destroyed; SMG1 seems to be more grumpy and short-tempered than the cheerful and outgoing SMG2, mirroring the relationship between SMG3 and SMG4.
  • Dumpster Dive: If "Mario's Bed and Breakfast" is anything to go by, they have very low standards for food.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: In his earlier appearances, SMG1 was shown to be as goofy as SMG2 and was depicted as The Voiceless. It's not until he was Suddenly Voiced that his and 2's differences were established.
  • Fastball Special: Tried this twice to save the universes' avatars and failed both times. Fortunately, the second avatar was spared.
  • Fights Like a Normal: Even when they don't have memes within reach, they can still give their enemies a hard time.
  • Foil: The pair is this to SMG3 and SMG4. While both pairs consist of two SMGs with conflicting personalities, SMG1 and SMG2 get along well and are almost never seen separated from each other while SMG3 and SMG4 were mortal enemies, and even after they stopped being enemies, they're still somewhat indifferent with each other and are rarely seen together.
  • Foreshadowing: Their real names are SMG1 and SMG2. All this time, we have been told that "SMG" stood for "Super Mario Glitchy," but these guys don't look like Mario characters at all, hinting that "SMG" actually stands for something different.
  • Forgot About His Powers: There's no explanation as to why they couldn't have just used their powers to send away the corrupted memes in the 10-Year Anniversary Special.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: The wireframe patterns across their bodies are actually scars from their first battle with 0—more specifically, from 0 destroying their universe's Avatar.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: They brought Zero with them to the SMG4 universe after their universe was destroyed, thus leading to Zero’s role as the Greater-Scope Villain of the series.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: They successfully quarantined Zero, but they were sucked into a black hole in the process. "MARIO'S OKAY" eventually revealed that they survived.
  • Knocking on Heathens' Door: They go around town preaching about their lord and savior, 4.
  • Last Request: They say this before they are sucked into the black hole. Subverted when we find out they survived.
SMG2: We have a guardian pod too! Find it! It'll explain everything!
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: If you missed their Given Name Reveal in the movie, well, you might be a bit confused when everyone refers to a certain "SMG1" and "SMG2"...
  • Loony Fan: Seemingly of SMG4. They're actually a lot less loony than one may think...
  • Minor Major Character: They mostly appear in cameos and don't get a major role until the 10 Year Anniversary Special, but they end up being critically important to both the lore of the series and solving the conflict of the episode, with their final words setting the events of the Genesis Arc into motion.
  • Missed Him by That Much: In "Mario's Bed and Breakfast", they happened to be staying at the same bed and breakfast where SMG4 was holding a meet and greet. Had they not been in their room (read: a dumpster) at the time, they may have finally found him.
  • Mr. Exposition: They're a lot more knowledgeable about their origins than either SMG4 or SMG3, so they provide a lot of the exposition about 0 and Guardian Pods. Their explanation of where 0 came from even comes with a screen saying EXPOSITION TIME.
    • They also explain the legend of The God Box in the Revelations Arc.
  • No Name Given: Before their names are revealed in the 10th Anniversary Special, they're simply referred to as "Hobo 1" and "Hobo 2". This is because their real names are SMG1 and SMG2, making them massive spoilers.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Most characters in the series are based on characters and creatures from Super Mario Bros. or another video game, while the series' Original Characters are either humanoid or resemble something recognizable (such as Jeeves). These two are none of those things, and instead look like an abstract collection of shapes akin to Super Paper Mario. This is justified, as they hail from an alternate universe (and, as later revealed, a different game).
  • Noodle Incident: Why doesn't SMG1 look like Spudnick, but is equally as physically affected by his death as SMG2? The only hint we've gotten is SMG4's theory that SMG1 was "squished in an accident." The outcome of the Lawsuit arc reveals that Meme Guardians don't have to be exact visual matches with their Avatars, SMG4 and 3's redesigns mostly vary at the head and (for 3) minor changes in clothing, while SMG1's head is an entirely different shape from Spudnik.
  • Older Than They Look: SMG2 looks and talks like a child, but he and SMG1 have been around before Mario's universe was even created, making them older than the mustached SMG3 and SMG4.
  • Out of Focus: Despite being confirmed to be staying in SMG4's world after the Genesis Arc, they don't make many appearances up until the later half of the Revelations Arc. Even after, they seem to only show up to teach SMG4 and 3 a new technique related to memes or give them an update on meme technology.
  • Piggyback Cute: Non-romantic (maybe) example. SMG2 is frequently seen riding on SMG1's shoulder when confronting danger, usually in preparation for SMG1 to throw SMG2 at the enemy.
  • Poor Communication Kills: They've been trying to find and warn SMG4 about the return of 0 since their first appearance, but they came across as crazy hobos instead. They don't get the point across until right before it happens.
  • The Quiet One: While SMG1 is just as happy to worship 4 as his smaller buddy, he remains mute while SMG2 does all the praising of their lord and savior. SMG1 does start talking in the 10th anniversary movie once Zero attacks, and in the flashbacks that SMG4 uncovers.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Considering all SMGs normally look like their avatars, we may never know why SMG1 has a square-shaped appearance. SMG4 suggests he was Squashed Flat, but this has never been confirmed.
  • Show Within a Show: They come from a blooper series for another (fictional) game, an Edutainment Game called "Spudnick's Great Adventure".
  • Sole Survivor:
    • They managed to survive 0 destroying their universe and quarantined him temporarily, but they accidentally brought a piece of him to the SMG4-verse after fleeing their world. Later subverted when it's revealed that all Newgrounds characters were originally from their universe, successfully evacuated by SMG2.
    • In a meta sense, they're the only characters introduced in the Cosmology Saga that make it through the entire thing alive (Fred and Spudnick die in flashbacks, The Box Club Leader explodes from absorbing too much of The God Box's power & Zero and his components (Niles & SMG0) are finally taken out for good by the end of the Revelations Arc).
  • Story-Breaker Power: Their ability to convert meme characters into energy would be able to prevent so many problems, possibly explaining them being Out of Focus.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Not only do they have the ability to manipulate meme energy, they're able to significantly slow down Zero even at his strongest form by tackling him.
  • There Is Another: Their real names are SMG1 and SMG2, and they seemingly have the same origin as SMG4 and SMG3.
  • Those Two Guys: They're initially presented as this, then it's subverted when it turns out they have plot importance and we find out their real names.
  • Walking Spoiler: Even their names contain massive spoilers, which is why we removed all these spoiler tags; otherwise, it would have been a massive sea of white.
  • Wham Line: The duo drop one of the biggest bombshells in the whole series in the 10 Year Anniversary after SMG4 notes how he doesn’t even know their names. In response, they finally reveal their names.
SMG1: What, really? I thought it was obvious by now. My name is SMG1!
    SMG2: And I’m SMG2!

Click to see the first, second, and third stages of Ax0l

A virus who travels between universes, corrupting and destroying them. The Big Bad of the Genesis Arc and the Greater-Scope Villain of the series overall.

  • Achilles' Heel:
  • Animation Bump: His true form in Revelations is without a doubt the most well animated thing in the whole series, moving incredibly smoothly in a similar vein to other Glitch Shows.
  • Arch-Enemy:
    • To SMG1 and SMG2. His murder of Spudnick and destruction of their universe logically made them pissed at him. They end up being the ones to imprison him in the 10 Year Anniversary and later their combined bomb attack on the God Box is what ultimately kills him.
    • Becomes this to Melony. Him possessing Axol would end up causing her major trauma after being forced to kill him, and she ends up being the one to (seemingly) kill Zero (but not for long) at the end of the Genesis Arc. Future episodes would show that she now has a massive disdain for Zero (and anything related to the number), though her hatred shifts over to Niles once he's made out as the true villain.
  • Arc Villain: Of two arcs. Kinda.
  • Art Evolution: His early arm model had no joints, being an example of Rubber-Hose Limbs. His arm model on his whole body is more detailed, having visible joints that may remind you of bones, as well as having fingernails on his hands.
  • The Assimilator: He attempts to do this to Mario after catching him, which nearly causes SMG4, SMG3, and the entire universe to be destroyed. Ironically enough, he's a victim of this himself in a way, on account of the Fusion Dance.
  • Bad Powers, Bad People: Of course the Omnicidal Maniac who darkens the mood every time he’s on screen would have the power to directly drain people’s life energy and corrupt dead memes.
  • Body Horror: He seemingly has an exposed ribcage, going off what little we see of him in "The Day HE Arrived". "WOTFI 2021" reveals that said "exposed ribcage" is because his lower torso and legs had likely disintegrated, hence Ax0l's final stage.
  • The Bus Came Back: Entirely in REVELATIONS.
  • Combat Tentacles: A set of black tentacles emerge from his Guardian Pod to attack Mario in "The Day HE Arrived", though it's still unclear if they're part of his body.
  • The Chessmaster: He is notable for being an excellent strategist, being capable of turning nearly every given situation he has at his disposal into a strategy.
  • Creepy Long Arms: He has a spindly blue arm that can stretch across the entire length of his castle.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Is an expert at inflicting these, with nearly every death he inflicts being slow, painful and horrific, especially what he did to Spudnick.
  • Cyclops: He has a single massive red eye with a slashed 0 as a pupil.
  • Demonic Possession: He ends up inflicting this on Axol to complete his plan, subjecting the poor axolotl to some major Body Horror while he's at it. And ultimately, Axol could NOT be saved from it, forcing Melony to Mercy Kill him.
  • Disc-One Final Boss:
    • The Zero that was fought in the 10 year anniversary special was just his severed arm, which turned into an eye after defeat. The rest of him was sealed away in his own Guardian Pod, which was summoned to the Mushroom Kingdom by the eye.
    • He himself is one at the end of the Genesis Arc. We find out later who's really behind him in the Revelations Arc.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: Zero's arm from the 10th Anniversary Special appears slightly different than the one on his actual model—it's less detailed, and seems to operate on rubber hose physics. This is because his design wasn't finalized at the time.
  • Eldritch Abomination: Like nothing else seen in the series. He's a sentient computer virus that travels between and destroys entire universes. He has the power to suck the life out of Mario recolors and turn them into his mindless slaves, tries to possess Mario himself near the end of the movie, and has been hiding underground for the whole series with none the wiser. The arm seen in the Anniversary Special was actually dismembered in his fight against SMG1 and SMG2, but was still capable of functioning on its own and travelled to the Dark Web with them in their Guardian Pod. In other words, the thing that caused more destruction than possibly any other villain in the series that SMG1 and 2 had to pull a Heroic Sacrifice to stop? That's only his hand.
  • Evil Genius: He demonstrates his knowledge of how the Guardian Pods work several times and uses them to his full advantage. He also knows how to come up with strategies to pull off his goals, like using toilets to get SMG4, SMG3 and Mario to him when the three needed to take a piss, or the implication that he knew that the three would escape the USB, thus putting it in seemingly a ritual.
  • Evil Is Bigger: Zero's true form (and Ax0l's One-Winged Angel form) utterly dwarfs the rest of the cast, being larger than Peach's castle.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: The few occasions we hear him speak, it's in a very deep growling voice.
  • Eye Spy: Once the antivirus keeping him at bay expires, he's able to send an eye drone out to spy on the Glitchy Gang. Later, it activates the interdimensional travel device in 0's Guardian Pod, allowing the rest of him to travel to SMG4's universe.
  • Exact Words: In "The Final Piece" he says that he will return Axol, when his plan will succeed. According to it, SMG4's universe will be destroyed.
  • Expy: His eye form is this to popular Kirby villain, Dark Matter, being one-eyed creatures who possess someone (Axol and King Dedede) to destroy the main world (Popstar and the SMG4verse). However, Dedede merely had Dark Matter purged from his body because Kirby fought him to do so, while Axol had to be killed to defeat Zero.
  • Faux Affably Evil: When he tries to pretend that he is Axol, he retains the character's affable attitude, only to lose it when his true identity is discovered, both figuratively and literally.
  • Foreshadowing: SMGs can normally only use their meme channeling powers when linking hands with their partner, but SMG0 appears to be able to use his on his own. This is because he's actually (technically) two meme guardians: The original SMG0, whose body is used as a vessel and is unable to do anything, and Niles, the one really pulling the strings and the individual in control of the body.
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: Will frequently stare into the camera at the end of episodes he appears in, specifically "Into The Dark Web" and "Mario and the Backrooms".
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: While he may have lost his universe, absolutely nobody sees it as an excuse for his actions, with SMG2 telling him that killing them won’t bring back his universe. Not only that, but he indirectly caused the destruction of his universe in the attempt to become more powerful and achieve perfection.
  • Fusion Dance: He is in fact the fused form of SMG0 and Niles, with Niles being the dominant consciousness. His destruction at the end of WOTFI 2021 ended up splitting them, with Niles latching onto Melony while SMG0 reformed on a piece of his original universe in the God Box.
  • Glass Cannon: As it turns out, his disembodied eye is this. It's both an amazing spy and powerful enough to force E. Gadd to make whatever it wants, but all Mario had to do was squish it with his foot to get rid of it.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: He's the result of Niles and SMG0 fusing together. However, the fusion not only resulted in Niles' noble intentions being degraded from it, it proves to be so dangerous that it destroyed a universe.
  • Go Out with a Smile: He gives a calm, serene smile as he's consumed by the God Box's explosion, and within his mind it's shown that Niles was finally at peace as he walked with SMG0 into the afterlife.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Is this for the whole series.
    • Both of his halves created the Internet Graveyard, which would end up being a major plot point throughout the saga and especially the YouTube Arc.
    • His destruction of SMG1 and SMG2’s universe would end up causing Luke to create the SMG4 universe, kickstarting the series.
    • He knocked SMG3’s Guardian Pod off course when it was meant to go into the Internet Graveyard, which would end up causing SMG3 to start antagonizing SMG4 for the show’s first ten seasons.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Implied. His true form is missing its lower half.
  • Hated by All: He doesn't really make himself popular in the SMG4verse. 1 and 2 already hate him for what he did to their universe, Axol winds up scared out of his mind by having this thing in his head, he becomes a Trauma Button to Melony, nobody sees his backstory as an excuse for his actions, and even after his presumed death, pictures of him are used as target practice in a theme park meant to celebrate one-eyed beings like him, showing just what kind of impression he left on everyone. This is slightly subverted after Revelations when it's revealed that Niles was in control of his body the whole time, but it's unlikely that anyone outside of the main crew will ever know.
  • Hellish Pupils: His eye drone's iris is shaped like a sun. His real eye also has the number 0 as its pupil.
  • Helping Hands: The arm and eye seen in the 10th Anniversary Special were actually dismembered from the rest of 0, but are still capable of both causing mass destruction and transporting the Guardian Pod containing 0's full self.
  • Hero Killer:
    • He destroyed the ToyToy Kingdom by killing Spudnick, the main protagonist of Spudnick's Great Adventure.
    • In an indirect example, his possession of Axol left Melony with no other choice than to put her potential boyfriend down.
  • He Who Must Not Be Seen: Other than his arm and his eye, his true form remains a mystery throughout most of the first half of the Cosmology Saga. His full appearance is briefly seen as a silhouette in "The Other Universe" and a few more glimpses of his body are seen in "The Day HE Arrived", but it's not enough to discern what he truly looks like. The majority of his full body has been finally revealed in "WOTFI 2021", and we get a better look at it in the Revelations movie.
  • Hypocrite: All Zero wants is a new, "nice and peaceful" universe to call home. What he's willing to do to make that home a reality is anything but.
Zero: Yes, my own universe with my own avatar. Nice and peaceful... just like it used to be.
SMG1: PEACEFUL? YOU CALL THIS PEACEFUL? This universe will be destroyed!
  • In Their Own Image: His ultimate plan is to create his own universe by gaining an Avatar, even if it will destroy the avatar's original world.
  • It's All About Me: Zero considers himself a Well-Intentioned Extremist who's doing what's necessary for a peaceful world, but it's been made clear he's destroying multiple universes solely for his own benefit, without a care for the damage he's doing as long as he gets what he wants. Not only that, but he has a severe obsession with being perfect.
  • Joker Immunity: Zero gets trapped in a Guardian Pod? His arm is severed in the process and it goes on to cause more problems by itself. It also gets trapped? Zero waits for the anti-virus to expire and sends out a disembodied eye as a drone and mischief maker. Mario squishes the eye? Zero has corrupted Axol and possessed him. Melony has to kill Axol to undo the fusion between him and Zero and hopefully bring the latter down with him? Zero merely defused and bided his time, using any new pawns he could get, until he could refuse. In the end, he's only truly killed when he accepts his fate and falls to SMG1 and SMG2's final combined attack. To put this in perspective, it took the events of his past, a movie, a story arc, a War of the Fat Italians, another arc and another movie for him to finally bite the dust.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Compared to the previous Arc Villains (or just villains in general given the work's tone), Zero is played dead seriously all the time, and is one of the only antagonists to give off the feeling of a real sense of danger. He is without a single doubt the most serious and dangerous out of all the SMG4 villains, dark enough to give Ztar, Waluigi, Ernie, SMG3 and Francis, among countless others, a run for their money.
  • Knight Templar: All he wants to do is create a peaceful, perfect universe to call his own—not caring at all that he has to destroy several more universes just to do so.
  • Leaking Can of Evil: The Stinger of the 10th Anniversary Special reveals that the antivirus keeping it quarantined is about to expire, and it does so at the end of "Into The Dark Web". It's then revealed that it was merely 0's hand and eye that were sealed away, meaning that they're able to try and free the rest of 0's body at the end of "The Other Universe".
  • Living Is More than Surviving: The presumed motivation for Zero's plan. How does he intend to solve this? Turn Mario into his new avatar and use him to create a peaceful universe, which would in turn destroy Mario's original universe.
  • My Hero, Zero: Of the Names to Run Away from Really Fast variant. He’s heavily associated with the number 0 and is the strongest character in the series.
  • Mysterious Past: Every time more is revealed about Zero's past, it raises more questions in turn. All we know is that "something" killed his avatar and that he was corrupted by... "something". Even after we learn his motive, the circumstances surrounding how his universe was destroyed are left unanswered by the end of the Genesis Arc. They're finally unfurled in the appropriately-titled "Revelations" movie.
  • Never My Fault: He himself says during the rap battle at the end of "WOTFI 2021" that the protagonists shouldn't blame him as he "tears [their] lives apart".
  • Non-Standard Character Design: In comparison to every character in the series, Zero’s model is much, MUCH more detailed, gruesome in design and realistic than the entire cast, with multiple never-before seen elements like having the number 0 for his pupil. Once he finally appears in REVELATIONS, he’s also shockingly well animated, moving incredibly smoothly almost as if he came from a high-budget GLITCH show. This is justified, as he originates from a different universe.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Much of his appearance was left up to imagination until "WOTFI 2021" and we know very little of his motivations until the "Revelations" movie, which makes him that much more frightening.
  • Not Me This Time: "Its Gotta Be Perfect" confirms that he's still dead and is not responsible for SMG4's Sanity Slippage regarding his Perfect Video.
  • Not So Above It All:
    • Indulges in some of the prior villains' Laughably Evil traits once in a while, such as being stomped on by Mario in "The Day HE Arrived" or being distracted by an axolotl vine in "The Final Piece". That said, it's almost always caused by other characters and not Zero himself, which shows just how serious he is.
    • In "MARIOS OKAY", a fake version of him created by the fake simulation trolls SMG4, Mario and SMG3 on top of a spinning eyeball while singing "You Spin Me Right Round". Despite not being the real Zero, it's still worthy to note.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Despite claiming he wants to create a "nice and peaceful" universe, it's been made clear that Zero is ultimately hypocritical and selfish, with him wanting a peaceful world for himself, and everyone else can go to hell.
  • Numerological Motif: Take a wild guess.
  • Obviously Evil: He has a single red eye, teeth sticking out of his neckbone, a purplish blue colour scheme and is taken the most serious out of every villain in the series.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: He travels between universes so he can destroy them by killing their Avatars. Albeit he's doing so to harvest meme energy to make his own dimension, he's still butchering trillions in order to do it.
  • One-Winged Angel: As Ax0l, he absorbs a bunch of Mario's energy to transform into a colossal version of himself with no legs.
  • Original Generation: The first Arc Villain to be a completely Original Character, as all the previous ones were either copyrighted characters from Nintendo (Waluigi, Francis) or based on said copyrighted characters (Bob, SMG3).
  • Pride: He’s a Knight Templar who believes only his necessities matter and desires to turn Mario into his avatar, not caring in the slightest if it destroys SMG4’s universe. He also brags about how easily he’s going to kill the gang during the WOTFI 2021 rap battle.
  • Psychic Link: He does this to Mario, causing him to see 0's memories of gaining his powers and being defeated for the first time.
  • Purple Is Powerful: His skin appears to be purple based off of Ax0l’s last two forms and what we see of his true form, and he is at the top of the official power level tier list.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He has a gigantic, glowing red eye. As Ax0l his left eye is red with a zero for a pupil.
  • Red Right Hand: As Ax0l, the Inkweaver merged with his right arm.
  • Rubber-Hose Limbs: What his arm model looked like before Art Evolution kicked in.
  • Sealed Evil in a Six Pack: At the end of the 10th Anniversary Special, SMG1 and SMG2 seemingly seal the virus inside SMG3's Guardian Pod. However, it was merely 0's disembodied arm and eye—the rest of him was already sealed inside another Guardian Pod before the events of the series.
  • Spotting the Thread: Following Axol's encounter with Zero, the first major clue that there's something seriously wrong with him is when he refers to his manga as "Japanese Comics".
  • Stepford Smiler: There are implications that Zero isn't very happy. The destruction of his universe has taken a serious toll on him (even if for his own reasons), he says in his rap battle that all he knows is pain, and when he kills Spudnick, he growls "help". Subverted with the latter when it's discovered in Revelations that it wasn't Niles asking for help, but SMG0 trapped within their fused body.
  • Taking You with Me: Makes one final attempt on the SMGs, Mario, and Melony as the God Box is blowing up with all of them inside. He fails... spectacularly, to say the least.
  • Terse Talker: All he can say is one word every time he speaks. He speaks more coherently while possessing Axol.
  • Transformation of the Possessed: While under his control, Axol gains a huge Slasher Smile full of sharp teeth and a pair of conjoined horns shaped like the number 0. The skin on several areas of his face also rots away, giving him a demonic, zombie-like appearance. As the arc goes on, Axol begins to take on more traits of 0's true form, until he finally becomes the giant One-Winged Angel form pictured above.
  • Viler New Villain: Most of the villains prior to his introduction, while vile, had at least some humorous moments. Zero, on the other hand, is mostly played seriously, with his humorous moments only through his possessed bodies and lackies, and is completely hated by virtually everyone by the end of the Genesis arc.
  • Vile Villain, Laughable Lackey: Zero is a dangerous Knight of Cerebus while his minions consist of memes and Shrek clones.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: You'd be hard-pressed to find anything humorous about Zero, and his universe-threatening actions raise the stakes as high as they could possibly go.
  • Voice of the Legion: Upon possessing Axol.
  • Walking Spoiler: Just like SMG1 and SMG2, there's a reason all these white boxes were removed. Zero’s existence gives out not only spoilers for his arc, but also the events beforehand... and even some events after.
  • World's Strongest Man: The part 2 of the 5,100,000 livestream featured a tiering list of where the SMG4 characters sat in terms of power, with Zero himself at the front of the S-Tier. Lending credence to this status is that fellow S-Tier Melony could only vanquish him by killing his host Axol from within rather than strictly overpowering him.
    • In both of their rematches, whilst Melony holds her own against him, there are moments when he clearly has the edge and he even wins their first bout. Their second fight sees Melony land a lot of solid hits on him that clearly make him feel pain, but a) she was being helped by SMG4, SMG3 and an empowered Mario for the majority, even getting tossed around again like before until they intervened and b) each time he came back his performance wasn't dampened in the slightest. He's only prevented from dragging the four aforementioned characters down with him to certain death due to SMG0 convincing Niles to stand down.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Every time he destroys a universe, trillions of females would be killed off. He’s also shown to be fine with trying to kill characters like Melony.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Again, every time he destroys a universe, it would indirectly cause the deaths of millions of children, and he's shown to be perfectly fine with trying to kill Fishy Boopkins, who has been stated to be a child.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: He sucked the life out of all the Mario recolors, turning them into faceless, mindless zombies.

    Spudnick

Spudnick

Voiced by: Robyn Barry-Cotter
First appearance: "The Other Universe" (2021)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fa69cb2e_f22f_4e41_bed4_c1edac1c7124.png
"Hiii! I'm lookin' for mah favorite teddy bear!"
The main character of the point and click adventure Spudnick's Great Adventure, as well as the avatar for SMG1 and SMG2.
  • Alternate Self: He has many similarities to Mario—being the main character of a child friendly game, somewhat twisted, possessing a high IQ and single-mindedly obsessed with one object (spaghetti for Mario, a teddy bear for Spudnick) and prone to wacky adventures.
  • Barrier Maiden: He's the Avatar of Spudnick's Great Adventure, meaning his entire universe fell apart when he died.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: He straight up decays on screen as Zero sucks his life out.
  • Dead Alternate Counterpart: To the avatar of the Blooperverse, Mario.
  • The Ditz: It seems that he's about as smart as Mario. Since SMG1 and 2 arrived in his universe in a Guardian Pod, it's likely that he was more normal before they showed up.
  • Edutainment Game: Originates from a fictional one.
  • Informed Ability: As an avatar, it can be assumed that he had special abilities if SMG1's words about avatars are anything to go by. Not that it matters, since he's dead.
  • Medium Awareness: He's perfectly aware that he lives in a game.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: His death destroyed the ToyToy Kingdom and brought SMG1, SMG2, the cast of Newgrounds and, inadvertently, 0 to the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • Posthumous Character: Was killed by 0 long before the series began.
  • Recurring Element: Like Mario, he's a red Player Character with a hat with his first initial on it.
  • Reused Character Design: He's a red Palette Swap of Hobo 2 (or, more accurately, SMG2 is a palette swap of him).
  • Show Within a Show: The star of a fictional point-and-click Edutainment Game called Spudnick's Great Adventure.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He only had a couple minutes of screentime, but those couple minutes resulted in his entire universe being destroyed and the inhabitants fleeing to the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • Vague Age: We know SMG1 and 2 are Older Than They Look, but is Spudnick a child or just childlike? If the former is true, then Zero's murder of him means the Death of a Child.
  • Walking Spoiler: His existence and current state are major spoilers for characters who are already themselves walking spoilers.

"Oh, mighty God Box..."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2021_12_04_215720.png
Voiced by: Paul Stylianou/MediExcalibur2012 (leader), Luke Lerdwichagul (members).
First appearance: "Mario Goes to College" (2021)

A college club where a group of people worship the "god box" and are desperate to recruit more members to avoid the school from closing them down.

  • Asshole Victim: Considering he damn near caused the destruction of the SMG4 universe by his power-hungry worship of the God Box, it's safe to say no tears were shed over the Box Club Leader being unceremoniously killed off not even five minutes into the Revelations movie. The only thing Niles has to say about his self-brought upon death is to call him an idiot before safely entering the God Box with his ship.
  • Berserk Button: Don't insult boxes... or do, as they're not very competent.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: With Niles in the Revelations Arc. While Niles is the one manipulating the events of the arc and the biggest threat, the Box Club have the most appearances and are the most active, worshipping the main item of the arc.
  • Cargo Cult: They're a box cult. Pretty self-explanatory.
  • Companion Cube: The boxes, of course. Though there may be more than meets the eye...
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Yeah, they're mad obsessed with literally any box they come across, but they're damn right that there's a "God Box" out there, and they actually know how to get to it as well.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Once the leader gets to the God Box, he dives in immediately, but the power is too much for him to handle and he gets incinerated.
  • Death by Irony: The Leader is ultimately incinerated by the very power he sought.
  • Demoted to Dragon: The moment that Niles hijacks Melony, the leader takes the backseat in the operation. It doesn't last long, though, as the leader dies due to a lethal dose of the God Box's power as soon as they get there shortly after.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: On the episode where the nature of the God Box is revealed, Mario throws the leader into the "sacrifice dimension," presumably disbanding the group. However, the banner starts to change, and two weeks later…
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: The leader gets killed off by the God Box not even five minutes into the Revelations movie.
  • Explosive Overclocking: Overwhelmed with excitement over finally approaching the God Box, it never occurs to the Leader that he might get more than he bargained for. Much more.
    Niles!Melony: Idiot.
  • Expressive Mask: Their boxes have custom expressions that match their current mood.
  • Expy: The leader is this to Hyness. Both always have their faces obscured In the Hood (or in the Box Club Leader's case, a box), pretend to be friendly until they turn out to be insane and disturbingly omnicidal, lead an Apocalypse Cult in worshipping a Destroyer Deity (Void Termina and the Gox Box) that will help them achieve paradise (and by paradise, we mean bring about The End of the World as We Know It) by sacrificing the bodies of those who have outlived their usefulness, and ultimately achieve their comeuppance at the climax of the story without anyone showing any remorse for them.
  • The Faceless: The Box Club leader isn't seen without his box on his head. Certain angles show that his head isn't even modeled underneath his box.
  • Ironic Hell: The Box Club leader finds himself stuck in another dimension with the notorious destroyer of boxes, Crash Bandicoot. He manages to escape offscreen, though.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After everything they've done, the Box Club being given permanent janitorial duties under the supervision of Chris and Swagmaster and denied any right to participate in the Graduation Ceremony is the least they deserve.
  • Legion of Doom: Their members include a BLU Heavy and a Boo.
  • Laughably Evil: While they do make themselves out to be evil right out of the gate, they're too incompetent to be considered anything more than a humorous distraction. At least, that was before Niles possessed Melony in her sleep to have them kidnap the SMGs along with the Glitchy Gang.
  • Leitmotif: The Aquato Family Caravan from Psychonauts 2 is used in a lot of their scenes.
  • More Despicable Minion: While Zero, or rather Niles and SMG0 ultimately have very tragic origins, the Box Club Leader, while he has his comedic moments, happens to be even more vile than them.
  • The Nameless: The leader has only been referred to as the "Box Club Leader" in the subtitles despite being a prominent character.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: The Leader typically has his goons do all the work for him rather than do things himself, though he does have his moments where he directly participates in his schemes. The club also has Mario kidnap sacrifices for the God Box rather than get them themselves in Mario and the God Box.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: After several episodes of humiliation, they managed to capture the entire gang in "Absolute Betrayal". They're also familiar with the meme life cycle, forcefully activating the Guardians' meme powers to transform the meme members of the club into a spaceship.
  • Shadow Archetype: Surprisingly enough, the leader is this to SMG3. The Box Club worships the God Box under the belief that it would grant them unlimited power, a thought that intrigues SMG3 and compels him to do underhanded things, like almost sacrifice Mario. Had this behavior and quest for power continued on SMG3's part, it would have ended as badly for him as it did for the Box Club leader.
  • Too Dumb to Live: When he and Niles!Melony arrive at the opened God Box, the Box Club Leader is so excited to gain unlimited power that he immediately dives into the Box without any protection. He gets unlimited power... but then explodes into nothing because a mortal body can only take in so much power.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: As long as it would help them find the God Box, the meme members of the club are perfectly happy with being sacrificed to make a spaceship.
  • Unexplained Recovery: It's never said how the leader escapes the dimension with Crash Bandicoot, and he dies in the "Revelations" movie before he can say.
  • Vile Villain, Laughable Lackey: Compared to Zero, these guys are a bunch of goofballs.
  • Villain Song: The leader gets one at the end of "Mario Goes To College", about joining his club. He also suddenly raves about how the God Box will destroy the world and take its followers to paradise in the middle of it, then goes back to singing like nothing happened.

"No, vote for me! I have zero experience!"
Click here to see his...familiar eye
Voiced by: Michael Kovach
First appearance: "Mario Suffers Infinite Detention" (2021)

A bully at Omnia Academy who harassed (and advised?) Melony in detention. He appears to have superpowers, and was eager to help Melony control them, ableit in his own way. But there may be more to his motives than meets the eye.

  • Accidental Murder: To what little credit that can be given, he wasn't intending to kill Fred and, consequently, destroy their universe.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: As the God Box is destroyed, Niles panics and desperately tries to hold his Zero form together, saying that this wasn't how things were supposed to end and that he and SMG0 were supposed to be together in their perfect universe. SMG0 manages to convince him that they're already together and that they'll always be friends, and this ends up being enough to convince Niles to finally let the both of them die and pass on.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Considering he originally existed as a construct in Melony's mind before being taken to his universe's remnants in the God Box, it's hard to say how many of his scenes had him interacting with anyone besides Melony.
  • Artificial Human: Well, SMGs are inherently this to begin with, but Niles is even more so because he's an SMG created by the God Box so that SMG0 would have a partner to be able to use their meme powers.
  • Berserk Button: He doesn't take very well to the implication of being a failure. SMG0 making a poor choice of words when trying to talk him down from killing everyone triggers his Villainous Breakdown and makes him the angriest he ever gets on screen.
SMG0: NILES! PLEASE JUST LET THEM GO! Our time is over! Don't drag them down with our failures!
  • Big Bad: He’s the true villain of the Cosmology Saga, being the dominant mind of Zero and the general driving force behind the conflict.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: With the Box Club (specifically the Leader) in the Revelations Arc. While Niles is the one manipulating the events of the arc and the biggest threat, the Box Club have the most appearances and are the most active, worshipping the main item of the arc.
  • Breaking Speech: He takes the form of Axol to give one to Melony during their Battle in the Center of the Mind, tearing into her for not being able to save him.
    Niles!Axol: You let me die.
Melony: No! I-I was trying to save you but...
    Niles!Axol: But you didn't...
Melony: No...but...! I've been trying to become stronger so...
Niles!Axol: YOU? STRONGER?! You can't even control your deity powers! You're weak...
(Axol turns into his Zero-possessed form)
Niles!Ax0l: ...and your weakness killed me... just like it'll kill all your friends.
  • The Bully: What he starts off as, even being referred to as such in the credits of his debut before his Given Name Reveal. Of course, what we eventually learn about him isn't any better...
  • Cyclops: His bangs serve to hide the fact that he is one.
  • Easily Forgiven: SMG0 doesn't hold any ill will towards him for basically causing the death of his avatar and, consequently, the destruction of their universe.
  • Enemy Within: Similar to Shadow Meggy before him, he's an evil being that haunts Melony's subconscious, and only she can see him. But unlike Shadow Meggy, he eventually reveals his consciousness to the real world, and was in the first place created by the God Box, a real thing.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He genuinely cares for SMG0 and considers him his best friend. In fact, everything he's done is out of a desire to create a "perfect universe" where he and SMG0 can be together.
  • Eviler than Thou: Doubles as a Conflict Killer. It's largely because of Niles being the much bigger threat than SMG3 that the latter ends up going through a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Extreme Omnivore: He seems to be the only one fine with eating the college's mystery meat. His meal was a boot, by the way.
  • Fallen Hero: He was one of the creators of the Internet Graveyard and the Meme Life Cycle, but his imperfections drove him mad and caused him to begin destroying worlds in his quest for perfection.
  • Fatal Flaw: Perfectionism. His desire to create a perfect world for SMG0 quickly turned into an obsession, and he's shown to despise the other SMG's and their universe for not being "perfect" enough.
  • Fights Like a Normal: He seems to have superpowers like Melony, but he's fairly skilled enough without using them.
  • Flawed Prototype: Something went wrong when the God Box created him, making him glitchy. This, combined with his desire to create a perfect universe for SMG0, is what ended up turning him into Zero.
  • Foreshadowing: There are several hints made towards his true nature:
    • He has three fingers on each hand.
    • No one except Melony acknowledged his existence. The one time it seemed like someone did was merely Melony's illusion.
    • When Melony asks for help to save Bob and Boopkins from falling off the bus, Niles says that he couldn't help even if he wanted to.
    • He knew about SMG3 and Melony's "fish boyfriend."
    • His Meaningful Name.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: He and SMG0 created the Internet Graveyard.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He's also both the indirect cause of SMG0's universe being destroyed and the being who merged with him to become Zero.
  • Hijacking Cthulhu: He possesses Melony, a being with godlike powers, for the last third of the Revelations Arc. Not only that, he had a hand in training her to control these powers in the first place.
  • Historical In-Joke: The file name of his official model? fakezero_pm.
  • Humanoid Abomination: He's a being created by the God Box, and is one-half of Eldritch Zero. He has all the same abilities as Zero (albeit weaker), including Demonic Possession and Meme Energy manipulation. While his spirit is inside Melony, he's able to make it appear as if he's really there, even though he isn't.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: It is apparent that Niles wants to recreate his and SMG0's universe so that they can live a normal and peaceful life like they did before.
  • Inhuman Eye Concealers: Serves to hide the fact he has only one eye.
  • Jerkass to One: He picks on Melony more than anyone else on the campus, though he has his reasons. Then again, Melony is the only one that can see him.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: He starts off making fun of Melony every chance he got, but also giving her important advice on how to control her powers. As time went on, their relationship got better, and he becomes less and less mischievious as he trains her, even giving her words of encouragement when she doubted herself. Then we find out in "Absolute Betrayal" that he only helped Melony get stronger just so that he can take over her body, just to get into the God Box to find SMG0. He even lampshades this in the "Revelations" movie.
Niles: Fine, Melony. Take your stupid body back! I only really needed you to get back into the God Box anyway.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Unlike a majority of other antagonists in the series who are mostly played for laughs, Niles is actually played seriously. Also, he was actually the one who merged with SMG0 to become a monster/virus known as Zero.
  • Knight Templar: His primary goal is creating a replacement universe that is "perfect" for his friend, SMG0. The methods he chooses to accomplish that are... not so ethical, like merging with said friend against his will to create an Eldritch Abomination that he uses to destroy SMG4's universe, and possessing Melony so he can take control of her god powers.
  • Lazy Bum: The election for Omnia Academy student body president is at hand, everyone got out their phones to vote...and he's fast asleep with the phone on his face before it slips off. Of course, it's not like would be able to anyway.
  • Lean and Mean: He's a bit on the slim side, and he's the overarching antagonist of the SMG4 series as a whole.
  • Master of Illusion: Even though he spends most of the Revelations Arc as a disembodied spirit within Melony's mind, he's able to make it appear as if he's really there. He also seems to be able to simulate physical touch, as she reacts to the spitballs and paper planes he throws at her in "Mario Suffers Infinite Detention".
  • Meaningful Name: His name follows a Fun with Homophones version in regards to his true identity; Niles = Nil. Nil = Nothing. Nothing = Zero.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He is clearly shocked and horrified when he realizes he indirectly killed Fred. Sadly, it doesn't last long as his Sanity Slippage goes into high gear soon afterwards, and doesn’t regain clarity until his final moments.
  • Numerological Motif: Despite there already being an SMG0, Niles is associated with this number as well. He has a single eye which can change its appearance into a white 0 with a red sclera either at will or under extreme emotion. This eye is inherited in his and SMG0's fused form.
  • Morphic Resonance: Previously thought to have belonged to SMG0, the red eye with the 0 pupil in Niles and SMG0's fused form is actually inherited by Niles.
  • Obviously Evil: Downplayed on the "obvious" part, but him appearing coincidentally after Zero's first defeat in WOTFI 2021 as The Bully for Melony, while no one seems to notice his abusive behavior or even his presence should tip a viewer off that something's just not right about him. And of course, he really isn't normal at all.
  • The Perfectionist: He is obsessed with creating a perfect world for him and SMG0, to the point where he outright fuses with SMG0 in order to do so.
  • Psycho Sidekick: Even though he genuinely loves SMG0, he's also shown to be a very obsessive and controlling friend. His motivation to destroy the universe is to create a new one where he and SMG0 can be alone together, despite the latter's objections.
  • Psychotic Smirk: He frequently makes an evil smirk once he's revealed to be a villain, even when he's possessing Melony.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: He caused literally all the problems in the Cosmology Saga and his outfit has red and black on it. Considering he was created by the God Box, an Artifact of Doom with nothing but red and black on it, this kind of makes sense.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: When his eye turns into Zero's eye (actually a symbol of the God Box), things get really bad.
  • Red Herring: As it turns out, the monster that has been tormenting the gang in the Genesis Arc wasn't SMG0 after all: It was Niles, who fused with SMG0 to become the virus Zero and took control of their fused body, the whole time. Niles' presence in the Revelations Arc, particularly the reveal of his 0 eye, serves to trick fans into thinking that he is SMG0 until the Revelations movie reveals that he's actually very different from SMG0.
  • Redemption Equals Death: After SMG0 convinces him that he doesn't need to create a perfect universe because always having each other is enough for both of them, Niles finally accepts their fate and walks into the light with his best friend.
  • Sanity Slippage: Thanks to his glitchiness, Niles’ goal of creating a “perfect universe” quickly devolved into a crazed campaign of genocide. Even when he has a moment of clarity after accidentally killing Fred, it’s still not enough enough to keep him from slipping off the slippery slope. By the end of the Revelations movie, he’s gone completely off the deep end as he tries desperately to keep Zero running.
  • Trickster Mentor: He bullies Melony, but also helps her learn how to use her powers. Crosses over with Evil Mentor following the revelations in the appropriately-titled "Absolute Betrayal".
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Besides Melony, people barely acknowledge his existence, barring the one instance he tricks Swag into thinking Melony threw a mook at him. Turns out he doesn't exist and can only be seen by Melony. The montage revealing this implies that Melony really did throw that mook at Swag.
  • Villainous Breakdown: See Sanity Slippage. His obsession of making a "perfect universe" slowly turned him into a genocidal lunatic and as the Revelations movie comes to its climax, he absolutely loses it. And then his plan falls apart, causing him to snap and desperately use any and all means possible to keep Zero alive and fulfil his plans.
Niles: I AM NOT A FAILURE!!! (punches SMG0) WE are the REAL meme guardians! We are so close to creating the PERFECT universe! The power of the God Box... IS SUPPOSED TO BE OURS!!!
SMG0: You’re my friend, Niles... but I can't let you do this.
Niles: (desperate) I'll fix this don't worry! Just watch, JUST WAAAATCH!!!! (bangs on a computer and points at his friend) YOU AND I WILL FIX IT AAAAALL!!!!!!!!! (eye glows red)
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: For a villain that appeared in a series that is mostly comedic and full of memes, Niles is mostly really dark and serious and has very few funny moments.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's pretty difficult to talk about his true identity as Niles without revealing some game-changing details about his corrupted form as Zero.
  • Wham Shot: The moment Niles finally moves his bangs to reveal he has one eye in "Absolute Betrayal" basically says it all. And that's not even before he reveals Zero's eye just a second later.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: He went on a rampage through the multiverse and destroying multiple worlds in a desperate attempt to fix what went wrong when he was created and build a perfect world for his best friend at any cost. He's also become so obsessed with succeeding that he never really stopped to think if this was something SMG0 would truly want him to do.
  • You Are Number 6: An aversion: He's the only Super Meme Guardian to not be called SMG[number] because he is an artificial guardian created by the God Box.

SuperMemeGuardian0 (SMG0)/True SMG0

"My name's SMG0! And welcome to my humble little home!"
Voiced by: Michael Kovach
First appearance: SMG4 Movie: Revelations (2022)

The true SMG0, a humble soul who resided in the 1982 computer game Mage with his avatar and friend, Fred. Along with Fred and Niles, he helped created the Internet Graveyard and the meme life cycle. Unfortunately for him, his life was soon turned upside down when Niles' desire for perfection drove him to desperate measures.

  • Alternate Identity Amnesia: It's evident that Niles was in full control over their combined form, as SMG0 doesn't remember anything he did as Zero.
  • Blue Is Heroic: He's the "good" half of Zero, and he's blue.
  • Body Horror: That monstrous beast we thought was Zero's true form? No, it was this poor guy merged with Niles.
  • Cyclops: Inherited this from Fred. Also serves as one of the two early hints of his identity as SMG0.
  • Forced into Evil: Somewhat. While SMG0 himself isn't evil and had no active role in the Genesis Arc, Niles pretty much forced him to become Zero against his will by merging their bodies together, allowing Niles to take control and become the dominant consciousness.
  • Good All Along: SMG0 was the good half of Zero that remained trapped inside his own body, unable to do anything as Niles wreaked havoc.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: He's one of the co-creators of the Internet Graveyard, and with it the meme life cycle.
  • Mean Character, Nice Actor: He's presumably the enemy character in Mage, yet is best friends with Fred.
  • Minor Major Character: Despite only appearing in one video and even dying at the end of it, it's made clear that the Internet Graveyard, a very important place in the SMG4 universe, wouldn't exist without him, as he (along with Fred and Niles) had a hand in creating it.
  • Nice Guy: So nice that he managed to talk Niles down in the end.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: He (along with Fred) has what may be the simplest design in the whole series, being little more than a blue stick figure with a baseball cap, a scarf, and one eye. He’s also relatively well animated for the series, having smooth movements and actual lip-syncing. This is justified, as he's from another universe that happens to be a retro game.
  • Not Quite Dead: After Zero's first destruction, he is taken to his home in the God Box, which is inaccessible by normal means, but technically not fatal to him. Of course, come the end of the Revelations movie, he really is dead.
  • Palette Swap: He and Fred are this to each other. It even extends to their 8-bit sprites in what little we see of Mage.
  • Walking Spoiler: His existence and true nature turn everything we thought we knew about Zero on its head.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He pretty much appears (on his own) and dies in his first and only appearance.

"Haha, I'm gonna getcha!"
Voiced by: Michael Kovach
First appearance: SMG4 Movie: Revelations (2022)
The main character of Mage, and the avatar for SMG0.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Unlike Mario and Spudnick before him (well, technically after him), he doesn't show signs of stupid behavior... but there's also nothing to suggest he isn't stupid like them either.
  • Cyclops: Has one eye on his model. This is probably a result of the game visually depicting him with no visible eyes in his sprites.
  • Dead Alternate Counterpart: To Mario, once again.
  • Friendly Enemy: Even though Mage is a shooter game, it's clear that he and SMG0 only shoot each other with nonlethal substance for fun.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: He (along with SMG0) has what may be the simplest design in the whole series, being little more than a red stick figure with a baseball cap, a scarf, and one eye. This is justified, as he's from another universe that happens to be a retro game.
  • Palette Swap: He and SMG0 are this to each other. It even extends to their 8-bit sprites in what little we see of Mage.
  • Posthumous Character: He's the first Avatar to have ever died, which happened long before the series began.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Like Spudnick, but on a larger scale—his death caused SMG0's universe to be destroyed, which motivated Niles to create a new universe and ultimately set the entire series in motion.
  • Recurring Element: Like Mario and Spudnick, he's a red Player Character with a hat with his first initial on it.
  • Retraux: His and SMG0's sprites are depicted as pixelated faceless stick figures wearing hats to mimic the graphics from the NES/Atari eras. This is reflected in his and Zero's models as well, only they each have one eye and a mouth.
  • Show Within a Show: He's the Player Character of his fighting game: Mage.
  • Unexplained Recovery: Not him, but rather his universe despite him still being dead. Though, it's implied that Niles or the God Box may have had something to do with it.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: The fact he was already dead to begin with speaks loudly.

    The God Box

Click here to see the God Box in real life
First appearance:"Mario and the God Box" (2022)
A mysterious artifact containing both power and destruction.
  • Artifact of Doom: Described as a source of both great power and destruction.
  • Connected All Along: As it turns out, the God Box is the source of the power that ended up creating Zero. It’s hinted at with its symbol containing a 0.
  • The Dreaded: SMG1 and SMG2 are audibly alarmed when its name is brought up.
  • Eldritch Location: Is filled with pieces of destroyed universes and anti-memes.
  • Genius Loci: It’s implied that the God Box is in fact a sentient entity, given how Niles communicates with it and how it seems to bestow power to him on its own whim. Which leads to it being the...
  • Greater-Scope Villain: ...as it's what bestows Niles with the power that ends up causing the series-spanning strife in the first place.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: In a rare example that it’s an inanimate object. Originally in the real world it was just a cardboard box where Kevin and Luke tossed their old garbage pc parts. In SMG4’s world, this translated to an enormous box filled with the fragments of old broken game worlds.
  • Humans Are Cthulhu: Is a by-product of this; to a normal person, it’s just a box full of old broken PC parts. To the cast of SMG4, it’s a world full of fragments of destroyed universes thanks to being used by the creator of their world.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: To actual real world humans, it's just a box of broken PC parts. To the cast, it's filled with anti-memes and old universe pieces.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: It’s heavily implied to be sentient, and being a box, it never moves at all.
  • Not Quite Dead: Depends on if you consider the pre-video adverts canon or not. The opening advertisement of "If Mario was in... Sonic Movie 2" suggests that the God Box didn't really suffer that much damage from the meme bomb, even giving off a white glow as Luke digs through the box.
  • Nuke 'em: Is destroyed by SMG1 and SMG2 with a Spirit Bomb-like attack.
  • Numerological Motif: The number 0; its influence has far reaching consequences for SMG0, Niles uses its power to become Zero and there’s a 0 in its symbol.
  • Real After All: That "God Box" the Box Club kept raving about? It's not only real, it's also real dangerous.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: To the SMG4 cast, it's completely black with red lines and it's an Artifact of Doom. To normal people, it's a normal cardboard box with a unique symbol drawn in black.
  • Riddle for the Ages: The God Box is portrayed as a simple cardboard box of old computer parts in real life, but normal cardboard boxes usually don't create digital lifeforms or destroy game worlds while emitting an evil red glow. How and why it can do this is never revealed, and given that the Revelations Arc concludes the development of the SMG4 Cosmology lore, we may never know.
  • The Voiceless: It's a box, so naturally, it can't speak. Despite this, Niles, who was created by the God Box, can understand it fine when asked how he can become "perfect".

Voiced by: Brendan Blaber
First appearance: SMG4 Movie: It's Gotta Be Perfect (2023, digital avatar), "War of the Fat Italians 2023" (in person)
A mysterious TV-headed man that has had a hand in some sinister plots the Glitchy Gang end up getting caught up in throughout Season 13.
  • 13 Is Unlucky: If you've been keeping up with SMG4's upload schedule, you may have noticed that this guy's next "show" gets off the ground (as in, its associated mini-arc reaches its Wham Episode that significantly kickstarts its big event) 13 episodes after his previous one, not counting SMG4 Crew or "Remastered64"note .
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Downplayed. Some might find his character relatable in his frustration of loving to create but unable to make something he's satisfied with: it helps that he's all too aware that he's oft-criticized as unoriginal. That being said, it still remains he has massive control-freak tendencies, he manipulates and later brainwashes the SMG4 Crew and others to act in TV shows against their will and he's all too willing to use violence, what with hinting that he'll find new actors if they don't want to play along. Oh, and his ultimate goal was to mind-control the entire world into watching his TV shows. His last words after his defeat are indeed pitiful but sympathy will vary due to the above.
Mr. Puzzles: I just wanted... to make a good TV show…
  • Allegorical Character:
    • He seems to be based on a typical TV producer more focused on making something that will net him a five-star rating instead of making something people will actually enjoy, going so far as rehashing what's already been done and acting like a tyrant when things don't go how he wants them to go.
    • If his backstory is anything to go by, he's also the end result of what happens when children end up letting television consume them. This also feeds nicely into the first allegory: most creators of successful television shows will usually have at least one or more media outside of television that they draw inspiration from to influence their work. All of Mr. Puzzles' knowledge comes strictly from television shows, so he ends up creating shows that are often criticized for being derivative and formulaic.
  • Arc Symbol: He's associated with a TV symbol with a bowtie below it, similar to his head.
  • Ax-Crazy: Behind his exaggeratedly polite demeanor, he seems to be rather controlling of his victims and wants to put them in a TV show of his own making, and he also makes some rather concerning expressions that indicate he might be insane.
  • Big Bad: Mr. Puzzles serves as the main villain of Season 13 due to his role selling SMG4 the Cursed Keyboard, is implied to have also sold him the Showgrounds, gave One-Shot Wren the technology for the wild west simulation which caused him to turn evil, and telling Marty of the supposed secrets in SMG3's notebook. He takes a more direct approach at villainy at the start of Season 14 by forcing SMG4 and friends to participate in his shows.
  • Berserk Button: Do not give him anything less than five stars, especially by deliberately decreasing the rankings. When Mario does this repeatedly in the game show, Mr. Puzzles eventually goes on a brutal rampage.
  • Body Horror: As he states in his Villain Song, he cut off his head when he was a kid and replaced it with a TV.
  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: His power and control over others seems to be relative to how many people like his shows. The higher the ratings, the greater his power, the tighter his control until his victims have no free will at all. When he finally gets to five stars, his power becomes great enough to affect people on a global scale.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: Whereas Zero was a direct heavy hitter with a simple yet devastating plan to make a new universe by smashing the old one to bits, Mr. Puzzles is hands off, simply giving the right tool to the right person to cause chaos. Zero brute forced his possessions, while Mr. Puzzles corrupts more subtly, and in fact just waits for people to be in the mental state to take their clearly dodgy offer as they don't care anymore. Zero was also prideful and obvious, while Mr. Puzzles acts from the shadows. In fact, while Zero often just does new yet effective versions of his original plan the second one falls apart, Mr. Puzzles targets people outside of SMG4's direct circle after his first loss to make them suffer, and often waits until the heat dies down.
  • Control Freak: As a caricature of a TV producer, Mr Puzzles cannot stand things not going according to plan. This is to his great detriment as when he puts the pieces in place and lets things play out, he gets his "show" but his ultimate plan in Puzzlevision nearly comes undone at the seems because he brainwashed the SMG4 crew and wasn't getting the same results. Not to mention, his ultimate plan was to brainwash the entire world into being his captive audience.
  • The Corrupter: Unlike Zero's complete domination and brainwashing, Mr. Puzzles instead pushes his targets buttons in small subtle ways by giving them what they want to send them over the edge to full villainy. Of course, it's not like Mr. Puzzles is incapable of brainwashing anyway, as the Puzzlevision Originals demonstrate.
    • He sells SMG4, currently in a manic creative rut and unable to cope with SMG3 outdoing him legitimately, a "Totally normal keyboard" that leads to his obsession manifesting as demonic fleshy growths that ultimately destroys the castle.
    • Previously the Splatfest champion, Mr. Puzzles gives a down on his luck One-Shot Wren access and control over a virtual world so he can always be number one, turning him from a washed up sports star to a mad, sadistic virtual god.
    • Marty was feeling unappreciated despite running a successful pizza joint but when Mr. Puzzles informs him that SMG3's notebook contains a secret pizza sauce recipe, the temptation causes Marty (and by extension, Mario) to go full criminal mastermind to steal and break into it.
  • Creative Sterility: Implied to be the case, since the episodes he made himself are just established properties like Blue's Clues or Scooby-Doo but with SMG4 characters. They're even done in the same vein as SMG4's pop culture parodies, only with TV instead of video games.
  • Cut Lex Luthor a Check: If he really wanted the SMG4 gang to act in his shows, instead of basically kidnapping and brainwashing them, he could have just held auditions, advertised for actors, gone to them for help directly... basically do what any normal director of a TV show would do when looking for actors. All of this could have been done before the "perfect video" mini-arc got off the ground, when the gang would have been more likely to trust him, and while they still had Peach's castle to call home. Furthermore, the style of the Puzzlevision Originals doesn't seem much different from the pop culture parodies SMG4 himself has done in the past, making this feel like a dream job for them if they were able to consent to Puzzlevision's works.
  • Cyborg: The "PUZZLEVISION" movie reveals that he was once a normal boy whose obsession for TV led him to cutting off his head and replacing it with a TV. He clearly didn't stop there, as it becomes evident that his powers are technology based and thus can malfunction (as Mario proves when he damages Mr. Puzzles by breaking his screen) and when the SMG4 gang destroy his avatar inside of his world, all that was left of it was his lower body which is shown to have some frayed wires protruding from the top.
  • Deal with the Devil: Seemingly his M.O. He targets vulnerable people and gives them technology that gives them what they want immediately but ultimately makes things worse for them; his deal with SMG4 ends up destroying Peach’s Castle, his deal with One-Shot Wren eventually leads to his demise, and his deal with Marty ends with him and Mario in prison.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Like One-Shot Wren before him, he was able to somehow get Melony, a godlike being, on board with his "shows". The proof of this is in hard-to-find unused footage of one of his shows in "Scooby-Mario", which would later be upgraded to a livestream before the Puzzlevision movie.
  • Digital Abomination: Somehow, this supposed digital avatar was able to know exactly when SMG4 was at his most vulnerable, and was able to hijack his computer to sell him an Eldritch Abomination. He can also hack printers, as we've seen in WOTFI 2023.
  • Dirty Coward: Once someone overpowers him, all of his bravado goes south and he ends up running away, demonstrated perfectly during his first encounter with Mario where he runs all over the castle being chased by Mario.
  • Domain Holder: Anyone that gets pulled into a Puzzlevision is entirely under his control. He even says to the SMG4 Crew "My head, my rules."
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • His first spoken appearance in WOTFI 2023 was done through a filter, but in all appearances afterward, he spoke clearly with no filter whatsoever. This was likely done so the audience could hear his voice better.
    • He also was shown to speak while his monitor was off in WOTFI 2023, whereas in future appearances, he only speaks while displaying his face, or another image.
  • Enraged by Idiocy: When Mario ruins his game show one too many times and causes his ratings to drop down to half a star, Mr. Puzzles completely loses his cool and puts Mario in the "No-No Zone".
  • Evil Brit: He has a British accent and instigated nearly all the bad things that have happened throughout Season 13.
  • Evil Counterpart: Mr. Puzzles is this to SMG4. Both are directors and are known to create videos that's entertaining and hilarious, but while SMG4 let go of his obsession with perfect videos, Mr. Puzzles is utterly obsessed with creating never ending entertainment to the point of devoting his time to torment SMG4 and his friends. This point is further emphasized by Mr. Puzzles being upset by failing (as in, not 5-star) ratings of his shows, in a similar vein to SMG4 wanting the video he's been toiling over day and night to be perfect.
  • Expy:
  • Failed a Spot Check: Having control over the worlds within his programs, he normally almost instantly corrects any "mistakes" made, such as if someone goes out of character or they see something that they shouldn't have. In "Mr. Puzzle's Incredible Gameshow Spectacular," however, his inability to tolerate Mario's antics lowering his rating leads him to give Mario a time out in a cage outside of the current show's aspect ratio. In his frustration, he inadvertently frees Mario from his cage during his breakdown and doesn't notice when the red clad Italian ends up stumbling out of the show.
  • Faux Affably Evil: In the Puzzlevision arc, he's constantly whimsical, eccentric, and jovial even when it's clear that he's keeping the SMG4 Crew Trapped in TV Land. His charisma and magnetism only serves to make him creepier.
Mr. Puzzles: Whoops! Must have been a little programming malfunction... We can't have that.
    • His adware form has a big smile on its face and speaks happily, but also sells SMG4 a cursed keyboard that causes a major Face–Monster Turn.
  • Freudian Excuse: His Villain Song in the Puzzlevision movie implies that he grew up alone and friendless, with TV being his only escape. That being said, no normal lonely child would "cut off [their] face and put a TV in its place."
  • Friendless Background: He had trouble making friends as a child, with watching TV being his only escape. Of course, his solution to this problem is... less than exemplary.
  • Foreshadowing: Long before the reveal that he wants his shows to achieve a perfect 5 star rating, in SMG4 Movie: It's Gotta Be Perfect after SMG3 and 4 finish the perfect video, Puzzles' adware avatar asks them to rate their experience with the keyboard.
  • Four-Fingered Hands: His hands only have four fingers. Notably, Duz1771's fan model of the character has five fingers, though it would later get an upgrade with the correct proportions.
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: Being a showman, he understands that he has an audience:
    • Through the TV on the train, he informs the viewer to check out the map in the description of "Ready To Ride?..."... while the video is still playing.
    • At the end of WOTFI 2023, he congratulates the people who voted and asks to do something like this again sometime.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Serves as this in "It’s Gotta Be Perfect", "Western Spaghetti", and WOTFI 2023:
    • He ended up selling SMG4 the Eldritch Keyboard, which ended up inciting the entirety of "It’s Gotta Be Perfect" and destroying Peach’s Castle.
    • He was the one who gave Wren the simulation the Gang is trapped in during "Western Spaghetti".
    • He’s the one who told Marty there was some sort of secret pizza recipe in SMG3’s notebook kicking off the events of WOTFI 2023.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: Why exactly he's chosen to antagonize the Gang was unknown until the movie, though it was heavily implied that he sees the Gang's misadventures due to his actions as a "show" with him as the "director". SMG4 Movie: PUZZLEVISION reveals he targeted the Crew specifically because he considered the show the stupidest thing ever, thus a perfect target for him to "improve".
  • Hidden Villain: The only clue the Crew has that he even exists (before meeting him in person) is Meggy vaguely remembering his logo.
  • Hostile Show Takeover: Once he moves out of the shadows for the "Puzzlevision Originals" series, this becomes his Modus Operandi.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard:
    • His decision to leave Mario in a cage outside the current show's aspect ratio in "Mr. Puzzles' Incredible Game Show Spectacular!". It allows Mario to escape back into the real world when the cage gets knocked over, and Mario ultimately proves to be vital in stopping Mr. Puzzles by lowering his ratings with his stupidity.
    • The final battle that occurs when Mr. Puzzles crashes the SMG4 Crew's channel is a show-stopper and his appearance on their channel causes all of his viewers to tune in. It generates all the high ratings that Mr. Puzzles craves for in a show...but since it was being recorded on SMG4's channel, they become the most watched show, meaning that Mr. Puzzles essentially thwarts his own goal and depowers himself.
  • Hypocrite:
    • Meta example. On the official Puzzlevision website, Mr. Puzzles' render has the filename "downloading-me-is-pretty-rude". If he wants to talk about rude, then we should start with him forcing the SMG4 Crew (as well as the occasional Unwitting Pawn outside their circle) to act in his shows. After each Puzzlevision episode, the filename changed from “still-pretty-rude-of-you” to “youre-not-listening-to-me-are-you”.
    • As noted above, in his Villain Song, he says he picked the Crew to be his actors because he believes that SMG4's channel is "the stupidest show that he's seen" and if he can make them entertaining then he can do anything. His format and style of shows that he makes are not that much different from that of the channel he mocks.
  • Irony:
    • There's lots of humor to be had from Mr. Puzzles, a man who was so devoted to and so fervently watched television that he ripped his own head off to replace it with one, being unable to create a critically acclaimed television show.
    • He's been the villain with the longest time from first action to appearance but is shown to have very little patience himself.
    • He derides SMG4's channel as stupid, so naturally he uses the crew to act in shows that are no different than the pop-culture parodies that SMG4 is famous for on his channel. He's arguably worse, as while SMG4 does so in clear parody , Mr. Puzzles considers these genuine television shows.
    • His ultimate motive of forcing the SMG4 Crew into being his actors was to create the greatest show the world has ever seen and control the world. He ends up creating that via crashing their channel and having a subsequent battle that the entire world watches...but it's on their channel, meaning that he gets what he wants, but doesn't benefit in the slightest.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Put SMG4 and gang through the wringer with his manipulative, controlling machinations and fittingly gets bested and beaten by all of them via making their own show and literally pummelling him to incapacitation.
  • Lean and Mean: Rivals Niles in terms of how tall and slim he is, and also rivals Niles in how evil he is.
  • Leitmotif: The appearances of anything related to him are usually accompanied by a little chipper piece of music. Not just any music, though; an original piece made by Jared Carey specifically for the series entitled "Magical Keyboard Jingle". "Mario's Mysteries" would later use the theme With Lyrics, and a Given Name Reveal to boot.
  • Logical Weakness: Mr. Puzzles is an expert of television shows — that is to say, completely scripted and planned events. It's only natural that he's unable to deal with Mario who often behaves in an erratic and unpredictable way.
  • Mass Hypnosis: We find out in the Puzzlevision movie just what 5 star ratings would mean for him; complete control over the minds of everyone watching his shows globally.
  • Near-Villain Victory: In the Puzzlevision Movie, after tricking the crew into making more shows and using the chaos to get ratings, Mr. Puzzles gets his coveted 5 stars, and with it is able to control the minds of everyone watching his show globally. Mario shows up to stop him, but Mr. Puzzles immediately brainwashes him and sends him away. Were it not for Mario's clumsiness causing him to trip and slide back onto the stage, hurting the ratings, Mr. Puzzles would've won outright.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: He's definitely the least physical villain in the series, even more so than Francis and Niles—he lurks in the shadows, and uses other people to advance his plans. It's not until he initiates the "Puzzlevision Originals" does he directly engage with the crew. Even in the Puzzlevision Movie, at his most powerful, he's a complete wimp when he's in a space he has no control over. Mario is able to shatter his face with a simple sucker punch, and once he loses his five-star ratings (and thus also loses his reality warping powers), the gang is able to beat him up fairly easily.
  • Not So Above It All: For as composed and eccentric he can be, even Mr. Puzzles is genuinely befuddled at SMG3's first dress on “Once Upon an SMG4”.
  • Off with His Head!: Self-inflicted variation. The reason he has a TV for a head is because he cut off his head and put a TV on it. How he survived that is a mystery.
  • Order Versus Chaos: Ironically for one who relies on underhanded tactics, Mr Puzzles represents Order in contrast to the Chaos of the SMG4 Crew, especially Mario. He's chasing perfection, reliant on copying established works and easily frustrated by his puppets going off script.
  • The Perfectionist: It becomes clear that he will accept nothing less than perfect 5 star ratings for his shows, and becomes increasingly frustrated by Puzzlevision failing to reach that milestone. Still falling short of what he wants in "Mr. Puzzles' Incredible Game Show Spectacular!" due to Mario's antics becomes the last straw.
  • Perpetual Smiler: His adware form has a smiling face PNG placed on top of an old TV box.
  • Powered by a Forsaken Child: His desire for a 5 star rating isn't just because he's The Perfectionist. It turns out his powers get stronger the better recieved his shows are, and when he finally gets his coveted 5 stars at the climax of PUZZLEVISION, he gains enough power to do Mass Hypnosis on the entire Mushroom Kingdom and potentially beyond.
  • Repulsive Ringmaster: Heavily implied. He sports a ringmaster's hat and tie (which is also present at his Arc Symbol), and he seems to have a fixation on show business and entertainment.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Even after his death, some questions about him still remain unanswered.
    • What was the connection between him and the Showgrounds?
    • Why did he choose the castle's basement of all places to hide out in before he made his move to trap the SMG4 crew into his dimension, especially when Depresso already lives there? Is that why Depresso came rushing back in a hurry? Was he trying to warn them (only to fail when he got struck by lightning)?
    • Where did Meggy see his Arc Symbol before?
  • Sanity Slippage:
    • In "Mr. Puzzles' Incredible Game Show Spectacular!", he's more on edge and quicker to anger than usual as his shows' perpetual failures to achieve a five-star rating start getting on his nerves. He does try to keep his cool despite Mario's antics until said goofs continuously persist and trigger his Villainous Breakdown.
    • His Villain Song in the following movie implies that he went off the deep end a LONG time ago.
  • Shadow Archetype: His character and M.O is very similar to that of SMG3 before the latter's Heel–Face Turn, being villains who want to create videos and be popular, but struggle to come up with ideas of their own and resort to making uninspired copies of their source material (SMG4 for SMG3, television shows for Mr. Puzzles). Both of them even have British accents (albeit voiced by different actors). It wouldn't be a stretch to say that SMG3 would have ended up like this if he wasn't stopped in the Youtube Arc.
  • Shapeshifter Swan Song: A variation. In his final moments, the faces on his screen rapidly change until they finally land on a stock image of a crying baby as he sobs.
  • Sissy Villain: He heavily gives off this impression when we get to see him in action, with his rather flirty mannerisms and a slightly high-pitched voice that almost sounds effeminate. He even casted himself as a fairy godmother in the Fairy Tale Episode.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Not just with his desire for 5-star ratings, but he often casts himself in major roles that influence the plot of his "shows" in a major way, or roles where his character has a high position of authority. He's been a close friend of the protagonists ("Mario's Mysteries"), two characters with great power ("Once Upon an SMG4"), a poor soul in need of the protagonists' help ("Scooby-Mario"), and a game show host ("Mr. Puzzles' Incredible Game Show Spectacular").
  • The Sociopath: To Mr Puzzles, all other beings are potential actors or obstacles. He praises Meggy and SMG4 for their "performances", not giving a damn that these were very real mental breakdowns for them.
  • Stealth Pun: He's a TV person that sells items to cause chaos... in other words, a TV salesman.
  • Stylistic Suck: His adware design is just a TV model with a smiling face PNG slapped on the front.
  • Tear Off Your Face: Claims to have done this to himself so he can replace it with a TV.
  • Trapped in TV Land: Seems to be capable of inflicting this on people at will.
  • A Twinkle in the Sky: His (presumably) final fate. After retreating into his TV head after losing his powers, an enraged SMG4 smacks him into the distance.
  • Uncertain Doom: It's not certain whether or not launching him into the sky actually killed him.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Or in this case, underestimating stupidity. The main cause of Mr. Puzzles' ultimate downfall was that he gravely underestimated Mario's sheer stupidity while simultanously overestimating his own ability to control it. When he's forced to directly engage with Mario for the first time in the Game Show episode, he's quickly driven beyond his wits' end by Mario's antics, and in the end, Mario being Mario ends up ruining his plans at the very last moment and gives the rest of the Gang the chance to fight back and finish him.
  • Villainous Breakdown:
    • During the events of "Mr. Puzzles' Incredible Game Show Spectacular!" when Mario continuously ruins his game shows and causes his ratings to almost hit rock bottom, Mr. Puzzles finally snaps and gets angry enough to lock Mario up in a "No-No-Zone" while he just decides to use all the game shows at once on Mario's friends and the audience in an insane attempt to recover his ratings. During the chaos however, Mario gets freed from his lockup and actually manages to escape from his show with him completely unaware.
    • He gets another one in the Puzzlevision movie. His desperation for 5-star ratings becomes greater and greater, to the point where after SMG4's show upstages him, thus taking away his power, he sobs in defeat, complete with a crying baby on his screen/face.
  • Villain Song: "Creative Control", a bombastic jazz piece detailing his backstory and his ultimate plan.
  • Walking Spoiler: He's responsible for the events of "SMG4 Movie: It's Gotta Be Perfect", "SMG4 Movie: Western Spaghetti," and WOTFI 2023.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: His backstory which involves him turning into a TV person is a reference to the poem "Jimmy Jet and His TV Set" included in Where the Sidewalk Ends.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Not only are Meggy and Tari "actors" in this show, thereby making them victims of his sick games, but the "COMING UP NEXT" livestream reveals that Saiko and Melony are as well. Said livestream showcased them being chased by a rolling head and a spike trap, respectively. For indirect examples, the unfolding of his "pilot" got Princess Peach dragged down to the underworld, where she gets turned into a monster.
  • Would Hurt a Child:
    • Not even the Boopkins children are safe from him. Fishy Boopkins is an "actor" on his shows, and JubJub—a baby—is used as a literal puppet during "Mr. Puzzles' Incredible Game Show Spectacular". He even throws the latter after being done with him.
    • As seen in his Near-Villain Victory, his Mass Hypnosis affects Karen's kids and the Koopalings.

    Completely Regular Keyboard

Completely Regular Keyboard (That Looks Coooool)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/magic_keyboard.png

First appearance: SMG4 Movie: It’s Gotta Be Perfect (2023)

During SMG4's search to create the Perfect Video, an advertisement suddenly appears showing him a Completely Regular Keyboard, which will allow him to make his work perfect. However, something seems to be very off about it...

  • Ambiguously Related: To the God Box. For some reason, when SMG4 is shown to be corrupted, he shows the same symbols that surrounded Zero during WOTFI 2021, which further lends credence to the fact that the God Box maybe is still out there. At the same time, however, it's explicitly stated to not be related to Zero, with the energy that it gives off not being any form of meme energy.
  • Arc Villain: The main villain of "SMG4's Perfect Video" mini-arc, and the Big Bad of "SMG4 Movie: It's Gotta Be Perfect".
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Downplayed but still applies. Ultimately, it can't be stopped once SMG4 dedicates almost an entire week to creating the Perfect Video with it, resulting in everyone except Peach being evacuated from Peach's Castle before devouring it wholenote . The main reason why this eventually counted as the Glitchy gang's victory is because SMG4 chose them over the Perfect Video.
  • The Corrupter: Aside from corrupting SMG4, it also does this to an unlucky Toad, resulting in him having physical deformities.
  • Eldritch Abomination: This... thing initially takes the form of a fleshy keyboard, but as SMG4 continues to use it, it grows into a mass of Meat Moss, tentacles, and eyeballs that encompasses the entire castle.
  • Evil Is Visceral: The keyboard it gives to SMG4 is surrounded by a Meat Moss-like surface, and its true form resembles one of these.
  • Flaw Exploitation: Exploits SMG4's desire to win back his fanbase to corrupt him.
  • Ironic Name: It's a cursed keyboard that releases demonic goop. Regular it is not.
  • Meat Moss: SMG4's use of the keyboard causes it to grow until its flesh has enveloped Peach's Castle.
  • Most Definitely Not a Villain: The Clippy-like salesman Mr. Puzzles uses that sells the keyboard insists that it's a "Completely Regular Keyboard", even though it very much isn't.
  • Not So Above It All: In spite of being treated seriously, one of the things is does is play tennis with itself using Boopkins as a tennis ball.
  • Obviously Evil: That suspicious-looking keyboard could have given off a lot of red flags, but SMG4's Sanity Slippage combined with his Exhaustion-Induced Idiocy from working on his Perfect Video resulted in him accepting it regardless of how suspicious it is.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: At the end of "SMG4 Movie: It's Gotta Be Perfect", it's unable to move from where Peach's Castle used to be thanks to everyone bombing the ground where it once stood.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about it without revealing what happened to SMG4 during the livestream leading up to "SMG4 Movie: It's Gotta Be Perfect" or revealing what happened to Peach's Castle.

    Marty & Lui
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marty_and_lui.png
Lui (left) and Marty (right)
First appearance: "Mario Is Fine" (2023)
Two knockoff versions of Mario and Luigi in the form of cardboard cutouts created by Mario. They were originally created to take Mario's place at the pizza shop so he didn't have to do any of the work, which logically would sound silly, since they're not sentient... or are they?
  • Achievements in Ignorance: Mario may have very well created a demon when he drew Marty.
  • Ambiguously Evil:
    • It's heavily implied that there's something sinister inside them, judging from the camera zooming in on Marty with an ominous filter a couple of times. Come "You Made Mario Do This", Marty is halting construction of the castle, leading to a series of events that almost got the Showgrounds bombed. Even the episode ending with Marty ultimately being reasoned with doesn't necessarily guarantee a complete Heel–Face Turn, as past Arc Villains made viewers think they're doing good, only to reveal their true selfish intentions. For example. Sure enough, later episodes after this indicate he has ties with the mafia.
    • SMG4's Journey to the Center of the Mind with Lui in "You Made Mario Do This" also brings up some questions; was that his way of communicating, or is he a Master of Illusion?
  • Animate Inanimate Object: Downplayed as they are never seen moving on their own anymore than falling over, but evidently are capable of moving when no one's looking, as Marty had planted himself in front of the castle construction before the events of "You Made Mario Do This".
  • Arc Villain: Marty orchestrates the theft of SMG3's notebook for WOTFI 2023, although Mr. Puzzles is the one truly pulling the strings.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: Marty is this to One-Shot Wren, the Big Bad of the last big SMG4 special, "WESTERN SPAGHETTI", during War of the Fat Italians 2023. Both of them were tempted by Mr. Puzzles in some way, but the Western simulation was given to Wren directly by him, while Marty was simply told by him that what he wanted was in something that didn't belong to him. Wren was someone Meggy knew from when she was very young, but Marty was more recently brought into existence. Wren was more than capable in a fight, being a former Splatfest champion, but as a cardboard cutout, Marty relies on Mario to do most of the heavy lifting. In the end, while Wren dies in his collapsing machine, Marty is only sentenced to prison for his crimes. And of course, Wren's villainy was played for tragedy, horror and drama, while Marty's is played purely for laughs.
  • Forgotten Phlebotinum: Marty's strong enough to stand in the way of the new castle's construction, yet gets arrested by the end of WOTFI 2023, complete with Institutional Apparel.
  • Greed: After his protest, Marty was set up comfortably but nevertheless, he still stole SMG3's sussy notebook for his secret pizza sauce recipie.
  • Healing Factor: Marty can be destroyed by water, but then he'll just rise back up from the earth, complete with a stone platform.
  • Implacable Man: For a piece of carboard, Marty's pretty strong, refusing to go down or move from his spot no matter how much people throw at him. Only when you show him sympathy and give him something he wants will he cooperate.
  • Intelligible Unintelligible: Marty doesn't vocalize at all, but he is somehow able to communicate with Mario.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Sure, Marty blocking construction of the castle was a dick move, but he did it because the funds that Mario swiped from him went into it; funds that he rightfully earned (somehow) working at the pizza shop.
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: At least, that's what Lui manages to convince SMG4.
  • Oddball Doppelgänger: You can't get much odder than Nigh-Invulnerable cardboard cutouts resembling poorly-drawn, off-brand versions of the main characters.
  • Out of Focus:
    • Not that Lui had a major role to begin with, appearing briefly in only two episodes, but after helping resolve the conflict in "You Made Mario Do This", Lui hasn't been seen since, not even appearing in WOTFI 2023. Strangely in spite of this, his model has been released alongside Marty and SMG4 and 3's heist outfits.
    • Marty himself hasn't really showed up ever since the conclusion of WOTFI 2023.
  • Real After All: "You Made Mario Do This" confirms that Marty and Lui are indeed sentient beings, and Marty's feeling heavily under appreciated. SMG4 realizes this thanks to Lui and promises to pay Marty back.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Lui is the Sensitive Guy, opting to show people what the problem is in an effort to peacefully solve a conflict, while Marty is the Manly Man, making his points head-on while also having ties with the mafia. This contrast makes sense, since the characters they were based on had a similar dynamic in most Super Mario Bros. adaptations.
  • Stylistic Suck: They are both crude drawings of what Mario and Luigi would look like as original characters, with Lui not even being colored. Considering Mario made them, this is hardly surprising.
  • Unwitting Pawn: In "War of the Fat Italians 2023", it's revealed that Mr. Puzzles informed Marty that SMG3's sussy notebook contained a pizza recipe, thus kickstarting the events of "Trust No One" and the 2023 iteration of WOTFI.
  • The Voiceless: Neither of them said a word, at least not yet.
