Recap / SMG 4 The New Castle

Go To

After all this time the new castle's finally here!!!

Four months after losing their original home to a demonic abomination, the Glitchy Gang's new castle is finally up and ready. There's just one catch: they need to decorate the downstairs roomsnote  by themselves in accordance to what SMG4 showed them. So naturally, wacky hijinks ensue.

  • Ambiguously Bi: SMG3 invokes this upon seeing how empty SMG4's room is, questioning what the latter would do if he had a girl and/or boy over.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Melony shows she doesn't need her deity powers to get mad, as after Bob hijacks the guest room and destroys her Froggy Chair, she somehow summons a whole firing squad of Froggy Chairs to gun him down.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Meggy manages to cause a fire in the kitchen just by tossing an unplugged blender in the empty sink, and this is before accidentally igniting SMG4's stash of TNT in the far corner.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: With Meggy accidentally burning down the kitchen, Mario snarks to the viewers:
Mario: "Looks like Mario isn't the hopeless one in this episode."
  • Breather Episode: While this episode is critical to the overall continuity of the series, there is no central conflict and the stakes are low, at worst consisting of disagreements between pairs of characters.
  • Call-Back: Meggy panics over the kitchen burning so much that she reverts into her "Leggy" form from two episodes earlier.
  • Continuity Cavalcade: The Storage Room has several items from past episodes and arcs, including Mario’s Lemonade Stand, the election cards from the Revelations Arc, the Box Club’s box masks, the parody contract, a Meggy Chonk, Meggy’s suitcase from Sunset Paradise, and Melony’s old Melon form.
  • Continuity Nod: Thanks to her character arc in the Oneshot Wren storyline, Tari is notably braver when she and Luigi explore the storage room (though she understandably caves in when Depresso shows up) and Marty, who was promised co-ownership of the new castle, is shown to be living in the same storage room.
  • Lethal Chef: Meggy was already a bad cook, but this episode is notable in that she doesn't even know which certain kitchen device does what. For example, she believes that a waffle iron is an advanced frying pan and puts it on the stove, causing a fire.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
    • Tari shows Luigi the bravery she gained during her character arc on display while in the storage room, but when Depresso pops out of the basement hatch complaining they're interrupting his murders, they nope right out of there and are later seen just outside the room in fetal positions.
    • SMG3 is in the middle of showboating all potential redesigns he could've done to SMG4's room. Unwilling to bear his delusions of grandeur any further, SMG4 ushers his friends out of the room.
  • Sequel Hook: While the majority of the first floor for the castle is shown, one particular room is boarded up, with SMG4 telling them not to talk about it. Similarly, the upper floors are still unfinished and the basement is not revealed.
  • Suddenly Speaking: Downplayed in that he's text-to-speech, but this episode is the first time since his introduction one year earlier that Depresso has had a spoken subtitled line.
  • Swapped Roles: As far as Mario and Meggy are concerned, it's usually Mario causing carnage and Meggy exasperatedly watching from the sidelines. But given that they're trying to decorate a kitchen, this time it's Meggy setting everything alight without even trying and Mario watching on, even if the plumber's first instinct was turning the kitchen into a spaghetti room. He lampshades it to the audience by saying that he's not the hopeless one this time.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Tari is noticeably much braver looking through the storage than Luigi, no doubt because of the events of "Western Spaghetti"... that is, until Depresso comes along (though understandably so since he mentions doing murders).
  • Wham Episode: Four months in the making, and the new castle has finally been built. Also, there's one particular room that SMG4 has boarded up, suggesting that it contains a secret that he doesn't want to get out.
Luigi: "What about that room?" (motions to the boarded up door)
SMG4: "We don't talk about that room."
