Recap / SMG 4 You Made Mario Do This

Go To

Marty's had enough...

SMG4's new castle is nearing completion, but one day a big problem arises – Mario's cardboard cutout employee Marty has blocked the path to construction and won't budge an inch. SMG4 exhausts all possible plans and uses all the help at his disposal to move the cardboard irritant, while Mario hatches a scheme that could have fatal consequences for everyone in the Showgrounds…

  • All for Nothing: As shown by SMG4 using Marty to deflect the bomb back at Mario, even if the bomb had hit its target, Marty would still have survived and the resulting explosion would have only further delayed the castle's construction.
  • Anti-Villain:
    • Marty blocks the castle's construction path and refuses to move, but only because he felt the Glitchy Gang took him for granted, leaving him feeling underappreciated. He gladly gives up the fight when SMG4 has a Jerkass Realization and decides to do right by him. Also helping is that despite being sentient and nigh-indestructible, the worst he does is opt to let everyone else break their backs trying to remove him.
    • In Mario's defense, he did try to reason with Marty, and only took extreme lengths when Marty made it clear he wasn't going anywhere.
  • Breaking Old Trends: You'd expect the SMG4 video following WESTERN SPAGHETTI would be a relaxed Breather Episode with low stakes, as has been the show's longtime tradition with the next episode following a major production. Instead, this episode jumps right back into the overarching story about building the new castle and gives Marty the antagonistic role that was teased in a couple of prior episodes. In addition, there are two major plot developments to the castle construction subplot – Marty gets co-ownership, and completion is given a set date.
  • Brown Note: Boopkins tries moving Marty by singing "24 Hour Cinderella" to him. All his awful singing does is knock out everyone but him and Marty and set everything on fire.
  • Call-Back: Two of the Goldeneye guards have doors attached to their groins, a continuation of their training shown in "Mario Gets His PINGAS Stuck in a Car Door".
  • The Cameo: Several side characters appear during the course of this episode (which gets lampshaded)
    • SMG4 throws at Marty, in order: Whimpu, Belle, Rob, JubJub, Bowser, Jeeves, Toast Guy, Beeg SMG4, Karen, Yoshi, SMG2, SMG1, Hal Monitor, Wario, Toadette, and Waluigi before running out of side-characters.
    • In the queue looking to move Marty, in addition to the main characters, are Marty McFly and Doc Brown, Morshu, Mordecai, Maxwell, Hat Kid, Mega Man, a Pride Demon, and various Mario enemies.
    • During the ending sponsor segment, Lawyer Kong appears as a prospective Morgan & Morgan client.
  • Comical Overreacting: Saiko's guitar not only fails to harm Marty in any way, but leaves a microscopic crack on it. From the way she reacts, you'd think she broke it into a million pieces, to the point where Kaizo and Bob express disapproval at her reaction.
  • Epic Fail: Everyone who tries to move Marty. Special mention goes to…
    • SMG4, who takes the water hose from Mario and sprays Marty into the dirt… only for Marty to rise out of the ground stronger than ever and now attached to a stone pedestal. The monster he then summons tries to stomp Marty to the ground, but only succeeds in breaking a hole in his foot, causing him to explode.
    • SMG3, who tries multiple ways to move Marty. At one point he sticks Eggdog to Marty's head like a plastic explosive… and Eggdog shatters into twenty little Eggdogs, the last knocking SMG3 out.
    • Meggy, who tries using a massive Killer Wail, but leans against it, accidentally knocking off its aim so the ink ricochets and nails a Pride Demon in the face – she shrinks down into just her head and feet before scuttling away.
    • Saiko, who smacks Marty repeatedly with her guitar. Not only does it do absolutely nothing, but it leaves a small crack, which she starts screaming in despair about, forcing Kaizo to drag her away.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Not only does SMG4 appeal to Marty's feelings and motives behind his actions and successfully persuade him to give up the fight, but in doing so, construction can resume and the castle is very close to being completed. The worst that happens is Mario getting blown up by the bomb that SMG4 swatted away, and even then he happily (if briefly) celebrates their new home coming very soon.
  • Fourth Wall Psych: When SMG4 defaults to simply throwing side characters at Marty, he looks straight at the camera and demands for more to be made. Turns out he's talking to his laptop, who promptly balks at him and explodes.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Mario tries asking Marty politely to move and tries to keep damage to a minimum. When that fails, he decides to call Swag and Chris for help and creates a highly dangerous bomb that could potentially wipe out the Showgrounds and all dwelling in it for them to launch. Fortunately, SMG4 foils Mario's plan and prevents a tragedy.
  • Hope Spot: SMG4 dousing Marty with water causes him to crumple… only to rise back out of the earth on top of a stone pedestal, making it clear that even if anyone finds out a way to break him, he's not going down so easily.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Marty earned the majority of the funds Mario gave SMG4 to build the castle. While Mario himself always thanked Marty for his work, he still failed to give Marty a cut of the profits. No one else even acknowledged Marty's existence as a character, much less gave him credit for watching the Showgrounds during the two months (in-universe) the Glitchy Gang were… temporarily indisposed.
  • Jerkass Realization: Running into Lui, Luigi's cardboard cutout, causes SMG4 to realize Marty's motives behind his actions, so he rushes all the way to where Marty is, apologizes for taking him for granted and trying to forcefully remove him, and offers him co-ownership of the castle. That's all it takes for Marty to finally fall over and allow construction to resume.
  • Mad Scientist: Mario dresses up as one, complete with unkempt grey hair, after Chris and Swag arrive to help him build his weapon to take out Marty. He may actually be one considering he created whatever it was used for the warhead they launched at Marty.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Marty's motive for standing in the way of the new castle's construction.
  • Oh, Crap!: SMG4 does this twice. First when he sees Goldeneye guards, tipping him off that Swag and Chris are nearby. Then again when he sees the bomb Mario and the army are ready to launch and learns the full scope of Mario's hair-brained plan.
  • Shout-Out: Removing Marty from the plinth he'd constructed is a parody of Arthurian Legend, specifically the Sword in the Stone part of the mythos. To further drive the point home, Bob (without SMG4's permission) told everyone that whoever succeeded in moving Marty would gain control of the Showgrounds.
  • Take That!: One of SMG4's attempts to move Marty is offering him a Grimace Shake.
  • Tempting Fate: SMGs 3 and 4 smugly ask at different points of the episode, "How hard could this be?" in relation to moving Marty. As they and the others find out, very hard indeed.
  • Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing: Marty, despite being a very strong sentient cardboard figure, doesn't need to move a muscle to defeat the Glitchy Gang; they end up suffering a lot trying to get him to move.
