The SMG4 cosmology finally comes to an end.

SMG4 Movie: Revelations is the third full-length movie based on Supermarioglitchy4's Super Mario 64 Bloopers, following Meggy’s Destiny and the 10 Year Anniversary Special. The movie serves as the conclusion to both the Revelations Arc and the Cosmology Saga.

Having survived his apparent demise at the end of War of the Fat Italians 2021, which saw Melony being forced to put Axol down in order to save the universe, Zero has resurfaced to threaten the SMG4 universe once again. This time he's possessed Melony and opened the God Box, which threatens to bring about The End of the World as We Know It.

Can Mario and the SMGs stop Zero and destroy him once and for all? What lies within the God Box, and what does Zero want with it? What secrets will be revealed? And will Melony be able to avoid the same fate as her boyfriend?

The movie premiered on April 2, 2022.

Tropes

  • Accidental Murder: When Niles decided to make the perfect universe and asked the God Box for help, it resulted in the God Box shooting multiple rays at Fred's universe. One of the rays hit Fred and killed him, and when Niles came back to fuse with Zero, he's visibly shocked at what his plan had already costed him.
  • Action Girl: In the evacuation scene, Meggy shows off her credentials as one by saving one of Desti's old teammates from a meteor strike via Diving Save.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Niles. Despite being responsible for the deaths of many, such as Spudnick and Axol in the previous Genesis Arc, his death is made sad as his last scene sees him desperately trying to regain his control as he still tries to secure a perfect universe for himself and SMG0 before going with SMG0 and accepting his death.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unclear who the "wannabe SMGs" Niles was talking about was. Seeing that he still considers the real SMG0 to be a "true" meme guardian as much as he views himself as one, that rules out those two guys leaving the rest of the SMGs as potential candidates (SMG1 being a likely candidate since he effectively "ruined his plan").
  • Animation Bump:
    • While briefly corrupted by anti-meme energy, SMG4 and 3 become much more fluidly animated, even having actual lip-synching.
    • Zero's true form is shockingly well animated, moving incredibly smoothly and never having the normal ragdoll movements of the series.
  • Art Evolution: While already present on the model revealed in "War Of The Fat Italians 2021", we can see Zero's arms more clearly. His arms are noticeably more detailed, seeming to resemble bones and having fingernails on his hands, something that wasn't seen in his early arm model, which was more simplistic in design.
  • Art Shift: Dramatic sequences in the mental scape are animated in a professional program as opposed to the series usual Garry's Mod animation.
  • Aspect Ratio Switch: Very brief but still. While most, if not all of the film is on a wide screen ratio, when Mario attempts to defeat Zero with a rock, it briefly switches to the usual Aspect ratio the episodes have.
  • Asshole Victim:
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: Melony faces off against Niles in her own mind, trying to regain control of her own body. SMG0 does the same at the end, to convince Niles to let go and pass on.
  • Big Bad: Zero, once again. Or so it seems. As it's revealed, however, Zero is a fusion between SMG0 (an innocent victim) and Niles, the true villain.
  • Big Damn Movie: The third one for SMG4, and the longest one at the time of release, clocking in at nearly 50 minutes. While the first one was a personal tale for Meggy and the second one was split between a celebration of the series before taking a turn for the serious with Zero’s first appearance, this one focuses on the backstory and ultimate goals of Zero, Mario and the SMGs’ voyage into the God Box, and the personal struggle of Melony to master her powers and accept Axol's death.
  • Big "NO!": The Box Club leader does this right before the power of the God Box causes him to explode.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The threat of Zero is finally stopped once and for all, the God Box is destroyed, saving the SMG4 universe, and Melony graduates Omnia Academy with full control of her powers, now intending to live her life to the fullest until she eventually reunites with Axol in the afterlife one day. Plus, the Box Club get their comeuppance, with their leader getting killed and them being forced to clean up all the destruction they inadvertently caused, and unlike the last time Zero appeared, none of the main cast wind up dying. However, it is not entirely without costs, as the innocent SMG0 dies along with Niles, though they ultimately make peace before passing on, and SMG3 had to sacrifice his pet Terrance in the climax, though he adopts an egg dog as a replacement afterwards.
  • Bookends: The quest to unearth the lore was started with a movie, and now it all ends with a movie.
  • Boring, but Practical: Anti-memes grant SMGs immense power when transmutted, but causes them to become Drunk with Power. When Melony is cornered by anti-memes, the SMGs resolve to sacrifice Terrence to power up Mario instead of risking death using the anti-memes. As it turns out, a powered up avatar with even only one meme energy is suffice enough to destroy anti-memes with ease.
  • Brain with a Manual Control: It's revealed that when Niles is fused with SMG0 he controls their eldritch body through a giant control panel that exists in Zero's mind. When Niles is attempting at one final grasp at the heroes in an attempt to prevent them from escaping the exploding God Box, SMG0 tears Niles away from the controls, causing their eldritch body to halt.
  • The Bus Came Back: After 8 months since War Of The Fat Italians 2021, Zero makes his full return.
  • The Cameo: ToyToy Kingdom appears as one of the destroyed universes in the God Box. Since SMG1 and SMG2 didn't come with the others to be able to revisit their old home, the only reaction this world got was Mario saying it looks boring.
  • Call-Back: The heroes evacuate the residents of the Mushroom Kingdom to the bunker from "Doomsday but Mario is Okay".
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Niles spares Mario as he still needs an Avatar for his new world with the heavy implication being that he's not going to extend SMG4 and SMG3 the same courtesy.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Melony's chibi drawing of herself and Axol.
    • Chekhov's Gunman: Terrance, SMG3’s favourite Ugandan Knuckles. Not only does he appear to fix the crashed Guardian Pod ship, but he lets himself get sacrificed so that the SMGs can use him for meme energy to power up Mario.
  • Continuity Nod: One of the destroyed universes featured is ToyToy Kingdom, SMG1 and 2's old home.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: SMG4 and SMG3 find they can manipulate anti-memes the same way they do to memes and with extra power to boot. They ignore SMG1's warnings about using that power and briefly get corrupted by the power, endangering everyone.
  • Darker and Edgier: This is by far the most serious SMG4 movie to date, and the one with the biggest death toll.
  • Dead Person Conversation: Melony is briefly able to reunite with Axol in limbo, after being swallowed by Zero. And while she ultimately chooses to go back to help her friends, Axol praises her drawing of them both and tells her he will be waiting for her in the afterlife.
  • Demoted to Extra: Most of the Glitchy Gang, who only appear at the start and end of the movie, while Melony, Mario and the SMGs take up the majority of screentime.
  • Despair Event Horizon: After witnessing Zero eat Melony, SMG4 becomes very depressed. When SMG1 and 2 announce that they'll have to destroy the God Box since they can't close it, SMG4 coldly repeats 1's sentence demanding them to destroy it all.
  • Disney Death: Melony appears to have perished after being eaten by Zero, but after meeting Axol on a literal stairway to heaven, she is given the choice whether to be with Axol in heaven or spring back to life to save her friends from Zero. She chooses the latter and is next seen bursting out of Zero's mouth.
  • Dope Slap: SMG4 smacks SMG3 and Mario upside the head when the latter two make it rain money in the skeleton strip club universe.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: The Box Club Leader meets his abrupt end less than 5 minutes in, when he gets overloaded with the power of the God Box and promptly gets fried and blown to kingdom come.
  • Drunk with Power: Anti-meme energy is very powerful, but it makes Guardians who use it become super crazy if they overdo it, resulting in SMG4 and SMG3 laughing manically and almost murdering everyone with the energy.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After being forced to kill Axol, spending a year struggling with crippling self doubts and being possessed by Niles, Melony finally masters her Fierce Deity power, defeats the fused SMG0, helping the true SMG0 to make peace with Niles in the mindscape and graduates college, knowing that Axol is waiting for her in the afterlife.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: After learning SMG0's backstory and deducing that Niles latched onto Melony, SMG4 promptly panics as he realizes that the entire reason that Niles was after the God Box was so that he could find SMG0 and merge back into Zero. And sure enough, Melony!Niles immediately comes crashing in to do just that.
  • Eye Scream: Melony deals a crippling blow against Zero by stabbing his fused form right in the eye.
  • Fusion Dance: This is the true nature of the "SMG0" that the gang has been fighting, comprised of Niles and the real SMG0 when Niles sought to make the perfect universe. Niles manages to join back with Zero in the climax to force another fusion.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Seeing as they have no way to close the God Box, SMG1 and 2 decide the only way to neutralize its threat is to destroy it and Zero while he's inside. However, the problem here is that SMG3, 4, Mario, and Melony are also trapped inside the God Box for most of the movie.
  • Good All Along: Zig-Zagged. SMG0 is only one fused half of the Eldritch Abomination everybody knows him to be, and he turns out to be a pleasant, helpful, friendly person. The other half, Niles, is the actual Big Bad in all of Zero's appearances, and is every bit a screwed up Tragic Villain there as he is here.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Once Niles accepts his coming demise and his failed plan and goes with SMG0 into the afterlife, his fused form closes its eye, and smiles as it falls into oblivion.
  • Graduate from the Story: Fitting for an arc that took place primarily at a college, it ends with a graduation ceremony. Melony is even the commencement speaker.
  • Grand Finale: The film serves as this to both the arc it’s part of and the entire Cosmology saga that started in 2018
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • SMG3 is forced to sacrifice Terrence so he and SMG4 can turn him into meme energy.
    • SMG0 makes a sacrifice at the end of the movie by convincing Niles to stop the last-ditch efforts on the latter's rampage, knowing that it will get both of them killed. It's more heroic when you realise how his sacrifice went completely unnoticed by anyone.
  • Humans Are Cthulhu: "The Great Beyond" is actually the real life GLITCH Productions office. Luke Lerdwichagul himself briefly appears when the heroes travel there and is considered by them to be an Eldritch Abomination. Similarly, the God Box is actually just a box of broken PC parts... but since all of those old computers had games on them, the SMG4 characters see them as the remains of destroyed universes.
  • Internal Reveal: Mario and the SMGs spend the first half of the movie believing that Melony is under the thrall of the Box Club Leader (who is long dead by the time they catch up to her), as they still have no idea of Niles’s existence. It isn’t until they meet SMG0 that they’re able to put it all together.
  • Karmic Death: The Box Club leader ends up being killed by the God Box, the very thing he worships. For added bonus, he was a Human Sacrifice to light Niles' way.
  • Killed Off for Real: The Box Club Leader, Terrence, and finally Niles and SMG0.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After everything they've done, the Box Club being given permanent janitorial duties under the supervision of Chris and Swagmaster and denied any right to participate in the Graduation Ceremony is the least they deserve.
  • Meaningful Funeral: The first thing SMG3 does when he returns home to the Internet Graveyard is hold one for Terrance.
  • Mood Whiplash: During the graduation speech in the final scene, we see still images from the emotional (like with Terrance's funeral) to the comedic, (like with Mario doing what he does best—humping spaghetti)
  • Morality Pet: One each for SMG4 and SMG3
    • Terrance, SMG3's favorite Ugandan Knuckles brings out his best side and leaves him heartbroken when he has to be sacrificed to save them.
    • Mario winds up becoming one to SMG4, with his terrified reaction to SMG4's Drunk on the Dark Side rant serving to snap him out of it. Too bad that it doesn't work when they decide to use Anti-Memes against Nile's ship.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: The true nature of the God Box? It's a bunch of broken PC stuff Luke tossed in. To the characters, however...
  • Never Say "Die": Played with. There's liberal references to death and killing but when Melony meets Axol in the afterlife, both avoid explicitly spelling it out.
Axol: I think you know what this place is. But don't worry, you're not like me yet.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • SMG3 and SMG4 almost kill Melony and themselves while Drunk with Power using the anti-memes to make a bomb.
    • Melony wins her Battle in the Center of the Mind and forces Niles out of her head. Unfortunately, this causes Niles to manifest in the real world, and he promptly merges with SMG0.
  • Nuke 'em: Both uses of this trope
    • On the comedic side: Mario, SMG4 and SMG3 nuke a ugly version of the FNAF universe with no hesitations.
    • On the serious side: Due to not finding a way to close the God Box, SMG1 and 2 decide to create a giant meme energized ball to destroy the box for good.
  • Oh, Crap!: Mario several times as SMG4 and SMG3 get corrupted by Anti-Meme energy. Niles has the same reaction when the meme guardians charge a massive anti-meme bomb.
  • Once More, with Clarity: Twice flashbacks show what really happened
    • We finally see the context of the first flashback Zero's arm showed Mario in the 10 Year Anniversary Special: It was from the perspective of SMG0, looking over the dead body of his avatar and being pinned by Niles before they became Zero.
    • Another flashback shows extra context for War of the Fat Italians 2021, upon the death of Ax0l: The spirits of SMG0 and Niles fled to their old universe in the God Box and into Melony's subconscious, respectively.
  • Only Sane Man: Mario of all characters finds himself in this role as SMG4 and SMG3 get corrupted by anti-meme energy and summon an energy bomb that's probably big enough to kill them all, laughing maniacally while doing so.
  • Percussive Maintenance: Exaggerated. Terrance is able to fix the ship by slicing one of the consoles with a chainsaw.
  • Power Up Letdown: Played with. Sacrificing Terrence to power up Mario turns him into big head Mario, a far cry from the titanic figure he became in War of the Fat Italians 2021, but he proves to be plenty powerful enough to defeat the anti-memes and escape the exploding God Box.
  • Real-World Episode: Downplayed. While the majority of the episode does take place in the God Box in the middle of the "Great Beyond" which is the real world, the characters perceive the world around them as an empty cosmic when near the God Box and they never realize that they came from a computer.
  • The Reveal: This is a movie called "Revelations"...
    • In reality, the God Box is an ordinary box full of broken parts from Luke's old PCs. But to everyone else, it's an Artifact of Doom containing the remnants of destroyed universes, surrounded by a dark space full of anti-memes.
    • SMG0 was Good All Along, Niles is the true villain of the Cosmology saga, and the Zero we've seen before is actually a fusion of the two, explaining how Zero was able to channel meme energy without a partner.
    • Niles is a being made by the God Box itself, brought to life by SMG0’s wish to have someone to help him take on the corrupted memes threatening his world, and together with SMG0 and his avatar Fred, created the Internet Graveyard and the meme life cycle. But Niles started to become unstable, and his desire for perfection is what led to the death of Fred, the resultant destruction of SMG0's universe, and the birth of Zero.
    • Killing Axol didn't actually destroy Zero in WOTFI 2021, but merely split him back into SMG0 and Niles. While SMG0 was transported to what remained of his universe within the God Box, Niles latched onto Melony so he could start manipulating her into becoming an ideal vessel to get back into the God Box, find SMG0, and join back with him.
  • Riddle for the Ages: How did the Glitchy Gang escape their bonds that they were trapped in the last episode?
  • Say My Name: Mario yells out Melony's name after she is eaten by Zero. Fortunately, she manages to survive.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: Averted. In contrast to the Genesis Arc where Mario spent most of the dramatic moments incapacitated, Mario specifically asks to come along for the mission to the great beyond and proves himself a valuable asset.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: As Niles madly rants about how he will create a new universe for himself and SMG0, Mario kicks him in the face and tells him to shut up and give Melony back.
  • So Last Season: The team fly through the Old Universe where SMG1 and SMG2 came from. Mario dismisses it as boring and they just move along.
  • Surreal Horror: To be expected when exploring a box of dead universes.
    • Played for Laughs: Mario and the SMGs come across universes with, among other things, giant bread memes and a giant Hank Hill dressed as Marge Simpson.
    • Played Straight: Melony's Battle in the Center of the Mind has her being haunted by visions of a fake melon family, a boardroom of suited Minecraft Axolotls and warped versions of her friends before Niles ramps it up to taunting her about her failures directly.
  • Take That!: It's safe to say that SMG4 is really tired of being asked to make Five Nights at Freddy's videos, judging by how SMG4, SMG3, and Mario casually blow up that universe for a laugh.
  • Taking You with Me: Zero makes one final swipe at the SMGs, Mario, and Melony when the God Box is blowing up with all of them inside. From the inside of his brain, SMG0 tears Niles from the controls to prevent them from reaching them. From the outside, it appears that he fails... spectacularly, to say the least.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Melony declares this to Niles when she sees the history of how Niles assimilated the true SMG0 and turned them both into a rampaging, universe-destroying monster.
  • Token Good Teammate: Shockingly enough, Mario becomes this to the SMGs as they begin to get Drunk with Power as they manipulate Anti-Meme energy. He even becomes SMG4's Morality Pet, the only thing that stops him from going overboard... at least until he and SMG3 try to blow up Niles' ship with a giant bomb of Anti-Meme energy.
  • Too Dumb to Live: The Box Club leader jumps into the God Box to receive unlimited power. It ends up being too powerful for him and kills him. Lampshaded by Niles.
  • Tranquil Fury: After discovering what Niles did in the past, Melony calmly declares that This Is Unforgivable! while still remaining furious. Pretty impressive, considering Niles technically caused Axol's death.
  • Villainous Breakdown: When Niles's plan is crumbling right before his eyes, he not only goes more and more desperate, but when SMG0 tries to get him to stop, he both sucker punches him lashes out at him frantically as he wants his dream of a perfect universe to be a reality.
Niles: (immediately after SMG0 begs him not to drag the heroes down with their failures) I AM NOT A FAILURE!! (punches SMG0) WE are the REAL meme guardians! We are so close to creating the PERFECT universe! The power of the God Box... is supposed to be OURS!!!
SMG0: You’re my friend, Niles... but I can't let you do this.
Niles: (desperate) I'll fix this don't worry! Just watch, JUST WAAATCH!! (bangs on a computer and points at his friend) YOU AND I WILL FIX IT ALL!!!!!!!! (eye glows red)
  • Villainous BSoD: After SMG0 tears Niles away from the controls to prevent their fused eldritch body from killing the heroes, Niles' anger quickly dissipates and turns to despair as he realizes everything that he had done up to that point to create the "perfect universe" for his friend and himself is now All for Nothing and that they’re about to die. SMG0 reassures Niles that the only thing that matters to him is that they're together and tells him to be prepared to be Together in Death with Fred, to which Niles finally smiles and accepts his fate.
  • Wham Line: When SMG3 asks the person who brought him, SMG4 and Mario back to health after getting blown up by the anti-meme bomb who the hell he is:
"Oh! My name is SMG0, and welcome to my humble little home!"
  • Wham Shot:
    • After being blown up by a ball of anti-meme energy, Niles!Melony, Mario, and the SMGs are sent hurtling towards one of the universes. Then we see a blue creature picking flowers in said universe, with the camera panning up to reveal he has one eye and a cap with a "0" on it...
    • As it turns out, SMG0 prayed to the God Box to give him someone to help cure the corrupted memes that were threatening him and Fred. And who is that someone revealed to be? Niles.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Mario calls out SMG4 and SMG3 for nearly getting them all killed after they got drunk on the power of anti memes and created a huge energy bomb. When Mario calls you out, you know you screwed up.
    SMG4: What... what... happened?
Mario: (glaring with ire) Don't you remember? You both went coo-coo crazy and blew us all up
    SMG4: Oh... that's right... Guys... I'm... I'm so sorry.
SMG3: The power sure did feel good though...
