Recap / SMG4's Mario Bloopers: Absolute Betrayal

Go To

The Box Club are at it again, and this time they've kidnapped Melony, believing her to be the Messiah that will help them open the God Box. The Glitchy Gang try to rescue her, only for things to go south as Melony ends up learning some uncomfortable truths...

Marks the true debut of the Revelations Arc after a few months of secrecy and buildup… just in time for its epic conclusion in SMG4 Movie: Revelations.

Tropes:

  • All for Nothing: Melony killing Axol with his permission to kill Zero for the good of the universe, crying while doing so, meaning the gang has lost a great friend? Yeah, turns out Zero survived and has been manipulating Melony in a different alias.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Zero once again scores a major victory as he successfully possesses Melony and heads off towards the God Box. And since no one else can see him as Niles, her friends are none the wiser to his return.
  • Connected All Along: Niles is revealed to be Zero.
  • Cliffhanger: Zero (now in control of Fierce Melony's body) and the Box Club leader head off in the spaceship formed by the ritual towards the Great Beyond and the God Box, while the SMGs and the Glitchy Gang watch in horror. And then the text at the end informs us the story will be concluded in SMG4 Movie: Revelations.
  • Covers Always Lie: The thumbnail shows Melony partially covered in blood with Mario staring at her in utter disbelief, as if to indicate that Melony takes a life in this episode. The episode itself has no actual bloodshed or deaths, but is still bleak in comparison.
  • Evil All Along: Niles turns out to be Zero, whose spirit has somehow bonded to her and essentially grooms her into becoming an ideal vessel with which to escape this universe and open the God Box.
  • Evil Laugh: Niles/Zero lets out an impressive one after The Reveal.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: Niles/Zero, having already forced Melony to Mercy Kill Axol and given her quite the Trauma Button, exploits it so he can subject her to the same fate. He indirectly does this to Axol too, since it means that the latter's sacrifice didn't mean as much as he thought it would.
  • Knockout Gas: The Box Club uses tear gas to incapacitate the Glitchy Gang and get their ceremony started.
  • Meaningful Name: Niles' name contains the word "nil", which means "nothing". This not only foreshadows that he was never truly there to begin with, but that he is Zero himself.
  • Not Me This Time: Saiko angrily confronts Mario about his involvement in Melony's kidnapping by the Box Club, since Mario is 1) the most recurring Box Club member and 2) his last appearance with them had him kidnapping students for sacrifices. Mario hastily reassures her that he's got nothing to do with this particular plan.
  • Not Quite Dead: It turns out killing Axol didn’t actually destroy Zero after all, and he’s been hiding in Melony’s mind between then and now, waiting for the right moment to take full control of her.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Yet again, the episode ends with a completely silent and dark gray end card.
  • Once More, with Clarity: Once it's revealed that no one else can see Niles, a montage plays that shows what everyone else saw in his scenes. Turns out, everyone else saw Melony either talking to herself or performing the actions that Niles supposedly did.
  • Rapid-Fire "No!": SMG1's reaction to Melony (or rather, Zero) opening the portal to the Great Beyond.
  • The Reveal:
    • The Great Beyond, the location of the God Box, turns out to be the real world.
    • Niles is actually Zero, and he's been hiding inside Melony's head as a Split Personality. The reason he's been training her was so he could take over her body and steal the God Box for himself.
  • Say My Name: Though it's not totally audible, Melony yells Zero's name when Niles reveals his true identity.
  • Unexplained Recovery: How did the Box Club leader escape that dimension and from Crash Bandicoot?
  • Wham Episode: Niles turns out to be Zero, who is well and truly Back from the Dead and visible only to Melony, and is revealed to have been "helping" Melony control her powers so she can assist him in his grand plan of tracking down and opening the God Box for nefarious purposes.
  • Wham Line: When Melony wakes up and calls out to Niles, her friends react with confusion. When she tries to point out that he's in the cage with them...
    Tari: Melony... No one's there.
    • And when Niles reveals who he really is...
Zero: It's been a while. Eh, Melony?
  • Wham Shot: When Melony realizes that no one else can see Niles, she demands to know his identity. He then reveals a very familiar red eye...
    • When Melony!Zero opens the portal to the Great Beyond, we get a glimpse of the room in the real-life Glitch Productions offices where Kevin and Luke do announcements for Glitch's other shows.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Subverted. The Zero possessed Melony looks like she's about to kill the Box Club Leader, only to aim her sword into the sky to make a portal to the Great Beyond. Zero even allows the Leader to join him as he heads for the God Box.
