Recap / SMG4's Mario Bloopers The Floor Is Lava

Go To

Things get a lil spicy in the mushroom kingdom

A game of the famous "The Floor Is Lava" turns deadly when Mario attempts to make it more fun by summoning Satan, who covers the entire city in lava. Boopkins consequently becomes the insane "Lava King" and it's up to Mario to fix the fiery mess he caused.

Tropes:

  • Art Evolution: Old Man Hobo returns in this episode, with a new 3D model.
  • The Cameo: Extremely easy to miss, but if you look in the background in the scene where Mario's friends are hanging out on a mushroom platform, you can see FM, X, Cube, Jeeves, Yoshi, Sergeant Mark, Admiral Greg, and last but not least, Mark's mom (a.k.a. the Pointy Boob Lady).
  • Convection, Schmonvection: Only people who fall into the lava are harmed by it and all varieties of easily meltable and flammable objects float on it.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Played for laughs as SMG4 is set up to be the episode's deuteragonist but quickly drops in the lava after escaping the castle and is promptly forgotten about.
  • Exactly What I Aimed At: During the climax, Mario throws a fridge at Boopkins. Boopkins jumps over the fridge, which lands right next to the crafting table, and claims that Mario missed. The thing is, Mario somehow managed to throw the fridge while he himself was packed inside of said fridge, meaning that he was right next to the crafting table upon leaving the fridge.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Fishy Boopkins turns into "the lava king" upon being submerged in the lava. Mario still doesn't take him seriously despite his new powers however.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Mario succeeded in making "the floor is lava" more interesting, but can't make the call to turn everything back because the phone tower was destroyed in the lava.
  • The Ground Is Lava: Mario and Fishy Boopkins play the actual game at the beginning of the video. However, Mario finds it boring and asks Satan to make it more interesting. This ends up leading to a more literal version of the game when Satan fills the Kingdom with actual lava.
  • Immune to Fire: Not just immune to it, but Fishy is also a case of Feed It with Fire. JubJub is a straight example. And Old Man Hobo, for some reason.
  • Lava Is Boiling Kool-Aid: Objects like rubber floating tubes float in the lava just fine while everyone else burns to death if they fall into it... except for Fishy Boopkins and JubJub.
  • Noodle Implements: When Steve initially tries to explain his plan to Mario, it somehow involves the Chaos Emeralds, Macca Picchu, Donda 2 and Jerma985. This is especially strange as when the chicken explains the actual plan (crafting a giant bucket), it involves none of those things.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Despite being regarded as a minor nuisance by Mario, Fishy Boopkins as the "lava king" actually puts up a pretty good fight.
  • Playing with Fire: Fishy Boopkins apparently gains the power to manipulate fire and lava and those who died in it when he himself fell into the lava.
  • Smart Ball: Despite the Fridge Logic behind how he threw the refrigerator, Mario hiding inside of it and anticipating that Boopkins would dodge it was a pretty smart move.
  • The Speechless: Taken to its logical conclusion when Steve is unable to give Mario his plan on saving the world, so Steve uses a talking chicken to do the talking.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Even more surprising given how fast and loose the episode plays with the laws of thermodynamics.
    • Mario's unable to call Satan back and ask him to undo the lava as the telephone company got destroyed in the flood, taking out all their systems too.
    • Fishy Boopkins is able to pull people from the lava to safety, but they quickly die soon after as they've already taken mortal damage.
  • Temporarily a Villain: Fishy Boopkins, of all people, serves as the Monster of the Week after he falls into the lava and emerges as the "lava king".
  • Too Dumb to Live: Bob tries to stab a flag into his rubber boat and makes it sink.
