Recap / SMG4 - We Interrupt This Broadcast

Go To

📺

As SMG4 and Mario finally begin constructing the gang's new castle, Meggy's beanie is stolen, and she goes on the warpath to get it back.

Tropes:

  • Aerith and Bob: The names of the Flummies SMG4 shows Mario – Zummy, Tummy, Toople McNooples, Luigi, Kimbo Slice, Satan (in his KPOP phase) and… Brad. The background music even cuts out when SMG4 mentions that last one.
  • Bilingual Bonus: The sign on the Western Spaghetti Saloon is in German and translates to "Erotic Sheep".
  • The Cameo: Several secondary characters unseen in main-line episodes for months appear on the train platform to join the main crew on holiday, including SMG1 and SMG2, Belle, Rob, Whimpu, Kaizo, and JubJub.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with the gang going to the Wild West to find One Shot Wren.
  • Coincidental Broadcast: The commercial revealing One Shot Wren's whereabouts just so happened to play right when Tari and Meggy arrived. Tari lampshades the Contrived Coincidence, implying that the broadcast may not be so coincidental…
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Meggy snaps at Tari that One-Shot Wren gave her her beanie, thus why she cannot simply "get a new one". Most of the cast would already know this, but Tari did not appear in "Mario Babies", the episode showing that backstory. Even when Meggy first mentioned One-Shot Wren to Tari, at no point did she discuss the beanie.
    • At the beginning of "Mario's Tunnel Of Doom", Meggy is watching old footage of One-Shot Wren winning his third Splatfest Cup. When she and Tari investigate his room in this episode, three trophies can be seen amongst the debris.
  • Continuity Snarl: Meggy claims she "never takes off" her lucky beanie, except presumably when she's sleeping, but this directly contradicts several earlier episodes where she doesn't wear it, usually when she has her hair tied up in a ponytail. War of the Fat Italians 2022 is just one example.
  • Covers Always Lie: Downplayed. The thumbnail for this episode shows Meggy standing in a dark room in front of a television. That part is accurate, but next to her is Mario's hat laying on the floor, suggesting something nefarious happened to him, which is not true at all – Mario and Meggy do not interact (a rarity for an episode where both appear), and Mario is just fine.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Mario keeps saying he wants to go to "Spaghetti Land" for vacation, but SMG4 tells him that no such place exists. What's the name of the Wild West tourist town Meggy and Tari tracked One Shot Wren to? Western Spaghetti.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Meggy and, to a lesser extent, Tari.
  • Famed In-Story: Meggy, evidently, as the leader of the Inkling delinquents has an Oh, Crap! reaction to learning who they stole the beanie from.
  • Just Following Orders: The leader of the Inkling gang says they stole Meggy's beanie because they were told to do so, though who gave them the order is not revealed (not until Western Spaghetti, anyway).
  • Mundane Object Amazement: Melony, unsurprisingly, considers a trip to IKEA a great vacation idea. When SMG4 reminds her she can go to the one near her home whenever she wants, she waves her arms in celebration.
  • Otaku: Boopkins' ideal vacation destination is Japan, for no other reason then his love for anime. His friends are disturbed to the point of meme-facing by his ensuing intense reminder.
  • Oh, Crap!: The delinquent trio's leader panics when he realizes the beanie they took was actually Meggy's, and the latter is rather upset at them for it.
  • Out of Focus: In the intro, Belle briefly appears holding a sign saying "Looking for screentime".
  • The Reveal: As it turns out, One Shot Wren "fell off" and went into seclusion some time after that fateful Splatfest where he gave Meggy his beanie. Meggy and Tari eventually find out he took up a new job as a gunslinger in the Wild West.
  • Shout-Out: The episode starts with a parody of the King of the Hill opening sequence.
  • Secretly Wealthy: Mario's pizza business was such a rip-roaring success, especially after Marty took over the kiosk, that he had earned more than enough coin to pay for the construction of SMG4's new castle. This catches SMG4 completely off-guard. In a Pet the Dog moment, Mario asks for nothing in return except that the castle be fun for him to play in.
  • Serious Business: Since it was a gift from her childhood idol, Meggy takes her missing beanie very seriously.
  • Something We Forgot: Discussed and seemingly averted. Saiko realizes that no one stayed behind to keep watch over the Showgrounds, but Mario assures her that Marty (his cardboard OC) will take care of things. We then cut to Marty falling over in a light gust of wind.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: Half of this episode is about SMG4 finally beginning construction on the new castle and, since he has money left over, planning a vacation for the gang. The other half focuses on Meggy and Tari as they stumble into a mystery about One-Shot Wren. The two plots converge at the end when Meggy changes the gang's destination from Pee Pee Island to Western Spaghetti.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: During the King Of The Hill parody, SMG4 and Mario drink their cans of Bonk!, completely oblivious to all the insanity happening around them, including but not limited to Depresso crawling on Mario for a few seconds.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Crossed with Karma Houdini, where the Inkling gang gets away when Tari begs Meggy not to hurt them, giving them an opening to escape.
  • Wham Shot: Two, related.
    • The shot of One Shot Wren's vandalized statue, revealing his decline.
    • Just a couple minutes later, the shot of One Shot Wren's house, which looks like a tornado hit it and is surrounded by police tape.
  • Would Rather Suffer: Everyone's nonverbal reaction to SMG4 fixing to send them to Pee Pee Island. After Tari and Meggy give them an out, they rejoice as SMG3 name-checks Anything but That!.
  • Wretched Hive: Discussed. Bob suggests the gang holiday in Detroit. SMG3 replies he doesn't want to die.
