Alzano Imperial Magic Academy

The biggest and most prominent magic academy of the Alzano Empire if not the world. It's located in Fejite in the southern part of the empire. It was created 400 years ago under the decree of Alica III and as a result the academy is owned by the state.

Faculty

    Rick Walken

Rick Walken

Voiced by: Jin Uruyama (Japanese), Ben Philips (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rick_walken.png
The headmaster of the Alzano Imperial Magic Academy.
  • It Amused Me: This is the reason he hired Glenn on Celica's recommendation.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: He is contracted to a water spirit named Selpie. She looks young enough to be his granddaughter, but she calls herself his wife. This of course causes everyone to think he is a pedophile and is also the reason he rarely summons her at school.
  • Retired Badass: When he was young he used to explore ruins which are potentially very dangerous.
  • Secret-Keeper: At the end of the first volume. He is informed that Rumia is the supposedly dead princess Ermiana.

    Halley Astry

Halley Astry

Voiced by: Shinji Kawada (Japanese), Christopher Wehkamp (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/halley_astry_ln.jpg
The instructor for Class 1.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: In the Light Novel and Manga, he was dismayed at the fact that the sacrificial student for Spirit Defence was defeated in the first round and at least hoped, he could have lasted a bit longer. While in the anime, he fully expected the student to fall in the first round.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He has a point that Glenn couldn't become a teacher since they know anything about his background and he doesn't even have a teacher license.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite how he demeans Glenn for being a third-rate mage, he still cares about the school and kept fighting to protect it during "Fejite's Worst Three Days".

    Zest le Noir

Zest le Noir

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zest_le_noir_ln.jpg
A professor of the Alzano Imperial Magic Academy.
  • Dirty Old Man: He's rather excited at the thought of Rumia becoming affected by his spells.

    Orwell Schuzer

Orwell Schuzer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/orwell_3.jpg
A professor of the Alzano Imperial Magic Academy. A rather eccentric young man who despite his personality is still allowed to stay thanks to his genius mind.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite his eccentricities, he still is a capable inventor who managed to create many breakthroughs in magic tools which is why the academy can't fire him.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He has a rather odd mind as shown when his answer to solving the problems of Alzano (which include a war with its neighboring country that may break out at any time) was to the hero of justice who gives people hope. For that plan he created a belt for someone to transform with and for the suit itself it took him three years to design it and three days to create the Transformation Trinket.
  • The Dreaded: He is just as feared as Celica due to tests of his inventions ending up rather disastrous till the point the professor, who is forced to become his partner is called a sacrifice. Glenn is even stated to be the only person not to be traumatized
  • Eyepatch of Power: He wears one for some reason. It could even just be there to show off how weird he is.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: This is how he views himself and Glenn, but Glenn doesn't return the sentiment and finds working with him to be an annoyance.
  • Hidden Depths: It should be noted that despite his oddness, he does know what kind of problems Alzano faces as shown through highly detailed descriptions, but his solutions on the matter leave more to be desired.
  • Mad Scientist: He builds many inventions in his lab that depending on usage can generate huge amounts of chaos throughout the academy ranging from robots that strip male students to test the Powered Armor he made or living vegetables that are carnivorious.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Deconstructed. Through one of his inventions, he gave himself boxing techniques far more advanced than any other participant in the tournament, but he failed to account that his lack of physical strength means he is unable to hurt his opponent.

    Cecilia Hesteia

Cecilia Hesteia

A doctor working in Alzano Imperial Magic Academy. She has rather frail health, despite this, she's still a devoted doctor.

    Leos Kleitos

Leos Kleitos

Voiced by: Kensho Ono (Japanese), Ian Sinclair (English)

A military researcher and Sistine's fiancé, who serves as a guest instructor at Alzano academy.
  • Asshole Victim: Subverted. While he was a manipulative jerkass, he suffered a Cruel and Unusual Death, courtesy of Angel's Dust from Jatice.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He acts like a kind, soft-spoken teacher and suitor, but he's revealed to be quite the Jerkass when he insults Sisti's dream of researching the sky castle. He only gets worse when he bashes Class 4 for ending up in a draw in their match with Class 2.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Jatice forced him to take Angel's Dust, causing him to rot away quickly.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Glenn attempts to use "The Fool's World" to give himself an advantage over Leos, but is quickly overwhelmed after Leos summons Tulpas to attack him. Subverted, this was Jatice in disguise.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: The stress of his team drawing with Glenn's causes him to develop these under his eyes. He loses it when he confronts Glenn at the end of episode 11 though, which indicates he was replaced by Jatice.
  • Foil: He's a Jerkass teacher like Harley, but the latter is played for laughs as a Butt-Monkey while the former is much more sinister due to his goal to marry Sisti for political power and his alliance with one of Glenn's enemies. Additionally, Harley tends to be brutally honest while Leos tries to hide his more unpleasant side at first.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: For some reason, he thought following Jatice's advice to provoke Glenn would somehow help him in his goal of marrying Sisti for power, failing to realize that this plan will result in Complexity Addiction and that his ally is Ax-Crazy.
  • Motive Rant: Has one at the end of the 10th episode, as if accidentally telling the coachman about the reason for his desire to marry Sisti.
  • Never My Fault: He blames his students rather than his leadership for their tie with Class 2.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: He seems pathetic when he has a Villainous Breakdown over drawing with Glenn's class. At the end of the episode, he regains his composure, curb stomps Glenn, and threatens Sisti with his knowledge of her friends' secrets. Subverted when it turns out that he was killed by Jatice before that fight, meaning his true combat ability is unknown.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Gets hostile with Sisti and threatens her when she persistently resists him.
  • Precision F-Strike: Normally a polite, well-spoken man, he loses his cool as Sisti attempts to resist him after failing to get away from him. Though this was actually Jatice in disguise.
Leos: Shut up, you damned kid. I'll make it so no one can ever see your face again!
  • Ship Sinking: Everyone, including Glenn, thought Leos was a good match for Sisti until he insulted her dream.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: Doesn't take Glenn's "The Reason You Suck" Speech well, advising him to keep his opinion to himself.
  • Sore Loser: While he tied instead of losing to Class 2, he doesn't take it well nevertheless and berates Class 4 for failing to follow his orders.
  • The Unfought: The Leos that defeated Glenn was really Jatice in disguise.
  • Unwitting Pawn: He's one to Jatice, who is only using him in a mad attempt to antagonize and kill Glenn.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Possibly subverted. Sisti thinks he used to be nice when he was younger, but he later admits to his informant that he just wants to marry Sisti for the sake of family politics, though it's not stated how long he had this goal.
  • Villainous Incest: His monologue at the end of the 11th episode implies that he and Sisti come from different branches of the same family, so forced marriage with her can make him the main one in the rich and mighty family.

    Fossil Lefoy Ertoria

Fossil Lefoy Ertoria

A professor specializing in archaeology.
  • Ambiguously Brown: His skin tone is dark, in contrast to every other character.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: It turns out his archaeological knowledge is useful to translating the notes of Alicia III.
  • For Science!: For the sake of archeology, he is willing to illegally enter ruins or even grave robbing in case it helps his research.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: He is rather disliked by other characters due to his rude behavior and selfishness with Eve even saying that she dislikes him even more than Glenn.
  • Honor Before Reason: Sistine tries to offer her grandfather's research in exchange for his help, but he refused due to wanting to discover the secrets of the past with his own talent.
  • Ironic Name: Although he is an archaeologist named "Fossil", he only investigates ancient ruins and temples instead of searching for actual fossils.
  • Jerkass: He isn't the nicest person considering the fact he steals artifacts to analyze them and considers his research more important than everything else including the Magic Festival.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: His huge physique isn't for show and allows him to survive dangerous ruins & temples without any trouble.
  • Old Maid: 37 years old and still a bachelor due to his stubborn personality and one-minded focus on archeology.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: This is his mentality about women wanting to become archaeologists.
  • The Unishment: As punishment for his theft and illegal entry into Kleitos territory, he was forced to become the assistant of the head coach Glenn, but he didn't do any actual work and instead used the trip to explore the ruins in the city where the Magic Festival is held. Also not helping the matter is that he is so stubborn, Glenn doesn't even stop him since it is easier to work without him.
  • Unseen No More: He is mentioned in several volumes since the first one, but his first true appearance is in volume 14.

Students

Class 2 students

    In General
  • Locked Out of the Loop: They don't know anything about the circumstances Glenn, Rumia, Sistine and Re=L find themselves in until Volume 10 in which they more or less demand to know the truth due to being sick of being out of the loop.
  • Took a Level in Badass: They become more skilled in combat in Volume 11 after getting training from Eve and Glenn.

    Gibul Wisdun

Gibul Wisdun

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bd549e90_7c40_43d2_ac72_0e55cf32bb5e.jpeg

Voiced by: Yutaro Honjo (Japanese), Alejandro Saab (English)

An honor student with the second highest scores after Sistine, but also a cynic who never tries to get used to his surroundings.

  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite how distant he may seem to his classmates, he still cares about them, and has great trust in Glenn after the instructor managed to earn his respect. This aspect of him sometimes makes him veer to the Tsundere boundaries.
  • Jerkass: He doesn't mince his words when talking about his classmates, is quite full of himself, and looked down on Glenn thinking he’s a slacker of an instructor until Glenn proved his capability.
  • Rushed Inverted Reading: During the school trip, he tries to look like he doesn't care what happened to Rumia, Re=L and Glenn while the others are worrying about them, but it was noted by Sistine that his book is upside down which he didn't notice, showing that he is concerned about them.
  • Stoic Spectacle: Befitting those glasses, he is very diligent and serious when it comes to learning.
  • Undying Loyalty: While it may not look like this. He is actually the student besides Sistine, Rumia and Re=L that has the most trust in Glenn. Best shown in volume 9 when When Glenn was going to activate something that could spell the death of everyone at the academy. When other students try to stop him like Wendy and Cash, he tells them not to do this since Glenn never did anything that would endanger them in the past and wouldn't do it now.

A timid, petite girl who is skilled with healing magic.

  • Idiot Hair: Has one thin strain
  • Shapeshifting: Initially, she was inept at this field of magic, but after Glenn aided her in mastering the skill she becomes good enough to be able to transform into a literal goddess.
  • Shrinking Violet: Her demeanor is described to be similar to a small animal.

    Wendy Nablesse

Wendy Nablesse

Voiced by: Yui Ishikawa (Japanese), Jad Saxton (English)

  • Ojou: She is an aristocrat like Sistine.
  • Unknown Rival: She considers herself Sistine's rival, but Sistine considers her a friend which Wendy acknowledges.

Other students

    Liz Filmer

Liz Filmer

The student council president and a third-year student of the Alzano Imperial Magic Academy.
  • Animal Motifs: She's been compared to a fox by Glenn, because of her slyness.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The reason she's rather energetic with Glenn is that he still treats her the same despite knowing that she's the granddaughter of a Mafia boss.
  • Blackmail: This is how she convinced Glenn to work for her by threatening to reveal some of the vandalism and thievery he committed, but managed to conceal.
  • Cool Big Sis: She was this to Sistine in her first year at the Academy which is why she always wants to help her out.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Her first true major appearance was in a side story about how she first got acquainted with Glenn and why she behaves like that towards him. The side story was eventually compiled in the Memory Records Volume 3 which ironically came after volume 7 in which she debuted in the main story.
  • Hot for Teacher: It's implied that she's romantically interested in Glenn due to him knowing her status as the daughter of a mafia boss yet still treating her the same instead of fearing her.
  • In-Series Nickname: Glenn nicknames her "Grey Fox" due to her sly personality and grey hair.
  • Minor Major Character: She is the student council president of the academy, but besides a few minor roles and debuting in a side story that focuses on her, she doesn't have a major focus like main characters such as Celica or Eve.
  • Onee-sama: She is considered this by Sisti, because of how much she helped her adapt to the school in her first year.
  • Student Council President: of Alzano Imperial Magic Academy
  • The Tease: Is this towards Glenn.

    Jaill

Jaill

A second-year student who participated in the mental defense competition.
  • Ambiguously Brown: He has tanned skin to show his status as a delinquent.
  • Ascended Extra: He becomes one of the members of Alzano's representative team.
  • BFS: In combat he uses a heavy broadsword without even needing to use magic to boost his strength.
  • Face of a Thug: He has a very threatening appearance, but he is not a bad guy.
  • Worthy Opponent: He respects Rumia for her strong will.

    Maria Luther

Maria Luther

A first-year student who managed to become part of Alzano's representative team.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: She has a stylized "Z" emblem on her shoulder, which means she is one towards the Pure Darkness capable of destroying the world.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: She was mentioned by Rick as one of the competitors he looks forward to and as he expected she became a member of Alzano's representative team.
  • Child Prodigy: She was chosen to be a part of Alzano's representative team and is the only year one student on the team.
  • Covert Pervert: She looks like an innocent child, but she is rather outward in showing her affection towards Glenn and has no problem with just being his lover.
  • Damsel in Distress: She is abducted by Luna and Chase for Jatice to start the ritual to summon the Pure Darkness.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She originally came from Rezalia, but was abandoned as a result of poverty. However, it later turns out her father intentionally sends her away for her safety due to knowing her status as an Apocalypse Maiden.
  • Genre Savvy: It's implied she's rather aware of classic hero tales since she outright calls Glenn a hero due to his many achievements and defines several attributes such as being a Chick Magnet, wondering how many more he will attract in the future and if the ones he rejects will become his enemy.
  • Hero-Worshipper: She respects Glenn a lot because he's a hero of Alzano and wishes to become his lover.
  • Hidden Depths: Although it might look like she's easy to panic, she's also good with words which is why Rumia considers her a powerful opponent. She is also among the only ones who manage to evade Luna's sleep spell which knocks out everyone except for Glenn, Eve, Rumia, and Priest Fais.
  • Marry Them All: Her proposition to other characters who are attracted to Glenn is that they should all become his lovers. This was naturally rejected by all of them.
  • Precocious Crush: This is how Glenn considers her love towards him since she is a first-year student, while he is an adult although the age difference is relatively minor five years.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Even before becoming a member of Alzano's representative team, the cast already knew her due to the many times she tried to seduce Glenn, which were later shown in side stories taking place before her proper debut.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Memory Records stories including her showcase that she continues to love Glenn even when his gender changed or when it seems like he is the panty thief of the girl's dormitory. This takes a darker turn with the fact she is the Apocalypse Maiden and eventual host of the Pure Darkness, which also has a similar obsession with Glenn.
  • The Social Expert: According to the author, she even surpasses Liz Filmer in conversation skills.
  • Squishy Wizard: Since she's younger than the other members, she's not as physically fit as them and has to undergo harsh physical training to become stronger.
  • Token Mini-Moe: Due to being the only first year of the team, she looks even younger than Re=L and is somewhat considered the mascot of the team.

Saint Lily Magic Girls Academy

A magic academy that grew into the third-largest academy in Alzano after receiving funds from various nobles and aristocrats. It is located in the lake region Lilitania, northwest of the imperial capital of Orlando. This magic academy is as the name suggests an all girls school and is also surrounded by lakes, forests, and mountains. This makes the school only accessible by train. However, this enclosed space along with the pressure from their parents caused problems with their students such as them forming cliques with each other. The biggest clique is the "White Lily" which is one of the oldest cliques of the schools and focuses on maintaining order. The second biggest clique is the "Black Lily" which in turn recently formed and focuses on freedom.
    In General
  • Crapsaccharine World: The school looks very beautiful at first thanks to its beautiful architecture, but inside the school, many students have psychological problems, because of how enclosed the space they are living in is. This causes students to form cliques to get some feeling of freedom and that's not even mentioning the students who joined cults, suspicious organizations or practice occultism. Glenn more or less sums it up:
Glenn: This school…surrounded by deep forests, lakes, and mountains… without the train, escape is pretty much impossible…. It’s basically a solitary island on land with how cut off from the rest of the world it is. A boarding-style school built in a remote region for noble girls. An unnatural isolated society that sterilized foreign cultures by eliminating vulgar desires… this is merely a birdcage. Even with such a fancy appearance, I can only think of the feelings of the little birdies trapped inside.
  • Gilded Cage: As noted above the school lacks the feeling of freedom, because of its enclosed its space. This along with the fact most of them didn't have a choice to join the school, because of their parents, has caused psychological problems for several students till the point they were willing to become part of a shady organization to obtain freedom.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Glenn complains to his class that they should be quiet and listen to the lesson, both cliques start blaming each other for disrupting the class despite the fact they both weren't paying attention.
  • Ojou: Most of their students are aristocrats or nobles whose parents forced them to become a student at the school so that they can become proper ladies.
  • One-Gender School: As its name suggests, it is a school for girls.
  • Order Versus Chaos: This is what the two cliques represent, but it's clear they both aren't doing good.
    • The order the "White Lily" clique follows isn't the order of the school, but rather the order they themselves have made such as having tea time during class and instead learning in the library with hired 'excellent tutors'.
    • The chaos or rather freedom that the "Black Lily" clique follows causes them to neglect classes and play games during them.
  • Wizarding School: It is among the three biggest schools of Alzano, but this is downplayed since the school focuses more on teaching etiquette and raising them into proper ladies.

  • Hopeless Suitor: It is more or less clear that her love for Re=L is rather hopeless since Re=L only sees her as a friend and the closest thing Re=L has to romantic attraction is Glenn Radars who sees her as a sister.
  • Legacy Character: She inherits her late father's codename, "Wheel of Fortune", once she becomes part of the Special Missions Annex.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She has this once she realizes that Re=L is not actually Illushia Rayford which means she just assaulted an innocent person who did not want to fight or hurt her.

  • Ojou Ringlets: She's an aristocrat, and has those ringlets in her hair.
  • Stupid Sexy Flanders: She finds herself attracted to Glenn's genderbent form, Renn Gladars, because of his teachings which she thinks is this trope since she didn't know (at the time) that Ren is actually a man in disguise. As a result she prefers that 'she' would stay as a male and was happy to find out the truth later on.
  • Summon Magic: As a result of training, she's able to summon a fairy to fight for her.
  • Support Party Member: She is more skilled in support magic and helps frontline attackers such as Genie or Collette.

  • Playing with Fire: After training, she became able to use fire magic to enhance her melee attacks.
  • Stupid Sexy Flanders: She finds herself attracted to Glenn's genderbent form, Renn Gladars, because of his teachings which she thinks is this trope since she didn't know (at the time) that Renn is actually a man in disguise. As a result she prefers that 'she' would stay as a male and was happy to find out the truth later on.
  • Those Two Guys: Ironically she becomes this with Francine after volume 8.

Genie Kisaragi

The maid of Francine.

  • Emotionless Girl: She shows no kind of emotion in the tone of her voice, but her dialogue is anything but emotionless since they are rather stingy and insulting towards others.
  • Honor Before Reason: This was her flaw as pointed out by Glenn. When she fought against Re=L in a mock battle, she refused to leave the battle despite knowing she couldn't win and support either Francine and Collette which where some of the factors why they lost. She discards this after this flaw was pointed out to her along with Ren questioning her how important it's more than her life.
  • Ninja Maid: She hails from a shinobi village and works as a maid for Francine.
  • Only Sane Man: She's this towards her class if not the entire school. She has many headaches, because of it.
  • Spanner in the Works: During her class' search of Elsa and Re=L, she accidentally found out they were getting kidnapped by Marianne who planned to bring the latter to "Heaven's Cross". Thanks to Glen's teachings, she forgoes the fight and instead leaves to tell him and everyone else what she saw which allowed them to save Elsa and Re=L and prevent Marianne's plan.

Kleitos Magic Academy

A magic academy founded by the Kleitos family after the war between Alzano and Rezalia ended 40 years ago. Unlike the Alzano Imperial Magic Academy, Kleitos Magic Academy had many magic scriptures and relics from bygone eras which allowed it to gain subsidy from the government which allowed it to grow into the second largest academy of Alzano.
  • Hufflepuff House: Although it is the second magic academy introduced in the series, Kleitos Magic Academy has the least amount of members who joined Alzano's national team (only one) and is also the only one which has not been visited by the main characters.

Faculty

    Gaysorn Le Kleitos

Gaysorn Le Kleitos

The headmaster of Kleitos Magic academy and the current family head.
  • Arc Villain: Of volume 14 due to being the cause of the timeloops although in the end Le Kill is the true threat especially once she breaks free from his control and plans on continuing it forever.
  • Karma Houdini: Played with, although he is not punished for the grievances he caused in volume 14 since Glenn is the only one who remebers the time loops. He is unable to continue the family line with the main branch since Glenn informed Leonard Fibel of Ellen's situation which allows her to leave the Kleitos household thus making Levin the only possible candidate to succeed as head which is what Gaysorn was trying to prevent.
  • Mike Nelson, Destroyer of Worlds: He nearly caused the world to go through an eternal loop due to overusing Le Kill's powers, because he wanted his granddaughter to become a stronger magician and make her chief magician of the selection so that the main house will continue leading it instead of the branch house.

Students

    Ellen Kleitos

Ellen Kleitos

Leon's sister and Sistine's Childhood Friend. Unlike her brother she does not have talent as a mage, but still takes part in the selection because of her grandfather.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Sistine finds Ellen's attempts to show attraction to her rather creepy due to her perverted gazes, clinginess and lack of personal space.
  • Broken Bird: As a result of the century of loops, she became a cold and distant person.
  • Childhood Friend: To Sistine due to the friendship of their parents.
  • Coming-of-Age Queer Romance: After the cycles are over with Ellen's memories removed, she is now attracted to Sistine. Glenn theorizes it probably comes from subconcious memories from the cycle which awakened those feelings.
  • Determinator: She kept going on with the timeloops for over a century to defeat Sistine and win the selection, but this is deconstructed since she still has her limits which caused her to make mistakes in battles she won in previous battles. She still retains it even after forgetting the loops and was able to win the respect of her schoolmates.
  • Flanderization: After the timeloops, she mostly shows up to show her affection to Sistine.
  • Hopeless Suitor: It is more or less clear that she has no hope in getting Sistine since she only has eyes for Glenn.
  • The Resenter: As a result of going through 5000 cycles, she gained a hatred towards Sistine for being the obstacle she can't overcome.
  • Technician Versus Performer: She is the technician towards Sistine's performer since all her tactics are based on what her opponents did in the previous cycles, but this is deconstructed since Ellen is completely incapable of improvising which makes her unable to defeat Sistine, who always is able to improvise and counter Ellen's moves.
  • Wistful Amnesia: Downplayed, although she lost the memories and skills she gained in the century, she still has her admiration towards Sistine, which also evolved into outright love.

    Levin Kleitos

Levin Kleitos

Leon and Ellen's cousin, but unlike them he comes from the branch house. He came to Alzano Imperial Magic Academy to become one of Alzano's representatives.
  • The Ace: He is considered Kleitos' Academy's best student which is proven by the fact he is the only one of his school chosen for Alzano's team.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: As a result of his talent, he is a rather arrogant person who considered himself above the other candidates. Until he met Sistine who completely overwhelms him in everything.
  • Covert Pervert: Despite being a rather serious person, he was the only one who went with Cash to peep on the women's bath.
  • The Lancer: He became second in command of Alzano's representative team.
