The problem: Creator's Oddball is "a work that clashes with the rest of a creator's output," per the description. Basically, a work that in some way isn't like the other works a creator has made. The problem is, that's also the definition of Genre Adultery. The sole difference seems to be that Genre Adultery is a radical departure from the creator's other output, as emphasized by the description:

According to Genre Adultery's page, Creator's Oddball is apparently "for other sorts of one-time stylistic changes". This does not sound like a particularly legitimate distinction, and after this trope was repeatedly brought up in the Duplicate tropes thread, I decided to do a wick check, grouping works by radical departures from a creator (Genre Adultery overlap) and not-as-radical departures from a creator's output (not overlapping, since Creator's Oddball's description does not mention the change needing to be radical.)

Wick check: Link here, but here's the quick results:

• 31/50 wicks were a genre/stylistic departure radical enough to qualify for Genre Adultery, or 62%,
• 15/50 wicks were a genre/stylistic departure not radical enough to qualify for Genre Adultery, or 30%,
• 3/50 wicks were zero-context or unclear, or 6%, and
• 1/50 wicks were unclassifiable, or 2%

Analysis: So the usage mostly overlapped. There were several examples of a not-as-radical departure from a creator's output that technically wouldn't fit on Genre Adultery as well, but I still don't think the distinction is necessarily a valid one. This confirmed my suspicions that Creator's Oddball overlaps with Genre Adultery.

Possible solution: I propose both merging Creator's Oddball with Genre Adultery, and clarifying Genre Adultery's definition a bit to include not-as-radical departures from a creator's output—an unnecessarily restrictive definition IMO, since the expanded definition is perfectly tropeworthy.

What does everyone else think? Any other ideas or suggestions?

1. Creator.Stephenie Meyer: Meyer is largely known for writing fantastic romance books (e.g. Twilight is a paranormal romance featuring vampires and werewolves, The Host has aliens that possess human bodies, with both the human host and alien getting separate love interests). The Chemist is a largely mundane spy thriller (although it does still prominently feature romance). Radical enough for Genre Adultery.
2. Trivia.Brave: Brave is a fairy tale fantasy film that stars a princess, which is the kind of movie you would expect from Disney rather than from Pixar of all studios, who are typically more known for having more grounded and contemporary stories. Because it is such a departure from the norm, it is not uncommon for people to mistakenly claim Brave to be a Disney movie as opposed to a Pixar movie, which is not helped by Merida's later induction into the Disney Princess line. Radical enough for Genre Adultery.
3. Trivia.Hairspray: For director John Waters. Ironically, this actually led to a lot more controversy due to parents getting such earlier Waters material as Pink Flamingos for their kids, which in at least one case resulted in a 911 call. Yes, Hairspray is for the whole family. Anything else by Waters prior? Not even close! As expected, Waters himself found the situation hilarious. Radical enough for Genre Adultery.
4. Trivia.Nicolas Winding Refn: Refn's pretty much famous for his grim, surreal, gory and stylish Author Tract. And he directed in 2007 an episode for the lighthearted series Marple entitled Nemesis. Radical enough for Genre Adultery.
5. Trivia.Never Been Kissed: Raja Gosnell, a director known for over-the-top gross-out children's comedies and live-action adaptations of cartoons, directs a straightforward romantic comedy. Radical enough for Genre Adultery.
6. Trivia.The Lazarus Effect: David Gelb, who worked on a food documentary (Jiro Dreams of Sushi), directed a horror debut film, not a food film. Seriously. Radical enough for Genre Adultery.
7. Trivia.The Acacia Strain: It Comes in Waves is a post-metal album heavily influenced by Neurosis, Cult of Luna, and Inter Arma, with multiple instances of clean vocals, a more guttural harsh vocal approach from Vincent, lengthy atmospheric passages, and a general dearth of breakdowns. Word of God is that it was an attempt to explore a different set of influences and was not reflective of a permanent stylistic shift. The same wound up being true for Failure Will Follow, which was a sludge metal album that was written around the same time as Step Into the Light. Seems to be a deliberate attempt at Genre Adultery, so I'm putting it here.
8. Trivia.Energy Breaker: Though he only did the art, this fantasy RPG sticks out like a sore thumb among Yasuhiro Nightow's primarily sci-fi works. Enough of a departure for Genre Adultery.
9. Literature.Redwall:Redwall, an Animated Adaptation made by the Canadian company Nelvana, featured 36 episodes over three seasons - the first based on the original book, the second on Mattimeo and the third on Martin the Warrior. It was played on PBS Kids (really) by way of American Public Television in the United States and Teletoon in Canada. The show's respect for its source material, its strong writing, and unforgettable characters have garnered it great praise, and it is widely considered among Nelvana and Teletoon's all-time best shows, as well as one of the true icons of Canadian animation. 10. Creator.Masahiko Ohta:
    • Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?! It's his only full-length work which is straight-up isekai fantasy, as opposed to a Schoolgirl Series with light fantasy elements like Kotoura-san or Gabriel Drop-Out.
    • There's also Hagane Orchestra, a series of three-minute shorts about female mechanics in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, created to advertise a mobile game. Enough of a departure for Genre Adultery.
11. Trivia.The Marvels 2023: Nia DaCosta's previous two films were a gritty crime drama and a sequel to the classic 1992 horror film Candyman, a far cry from the light-hearted and comedic space adventure that this film is promoted as. Enough of a departure for Genre Adultery.
12. Trivia.BLOOD Plus: Blood+ is the only anime that Hans Zimmer and Mark Mancina have done music for, which certainly stands out since they're household names for soundtracks of movies from the West. Enough of a departure for Genre Adultery.
13. Trivia.Golden Eye 1997: While Nintendo has dabbled with publishing some licensed games, this is the only one to be a movie tie-in. It's also one of their most realistic games and an FPS, a game genre they've rarely touched since. Enough of a departure for Genre Adultery.
14. Trivia.Miracle Of Sound: According to a comment on "Machine Hearts", he doesn't normally click with anime-style stuff and NieR: Automata was an exception. Enough of a departure for Genre Adultery.
15. Trivia.Silver Spoon: Most of Hiromu Arakawa's works are fantasy series with high stakes involved (like Fullmetal Alchemist and her manga adaptation of The Heroic Legend of Arslan), but Silver Spoon is a Slice of Life series that takes place in contemporary Japan and has no fantastic elements at all. According to Arakawa, she wanted to challenge herself by making a more realistic series. Enough of a departure for Genre Adultery.
16. Theatre.And Juliet: In-Universe, after agreeing to Anne's "Happy Ending" for Juliet, William admits he likes it but is immediately returning to writing tragedies.
    Anne: Are you happy, William?
    William: I am. But after this I'm going to write so many tragedies.
    Anne: (slightly annoyed) I know.
    William: Like, really dark shit!
    Anne: I know! In-Universe Genre Adultery.
17. Creator.Norman Lear: Channel Umptee-3, being an animated Edutainment Show, fairly far from Lear's usual output. Radical enough for Genre Adultery.
18. Creator.Steven Erikson: Steven Erikson is known for his gritty, serious work, most prominently the sprawling, complex fantasy epic Malazan Book of the Fallen. He also wrote Willful Child, an affectionate, over-the-top Star Trek parody. Radical enough for Genre Adultery.
19. Trivia.Arcane: For Writer/Exectutive Producer Ash Brannon. He's well known for directing Toy Story 2 and Surf's Up, both of which are kids films. This is the first adult animated series that he's written for. Eh, a kids director doing adult stuff is radical enough for Genre Adultery IMO.
20. Trivia.Honoo No Alpen Rose: The anime is this for Tatsunoko Production, a company that built its reputation on fast-paced action and superhero shows and comedies like Speed Racer and Time Bokan. In their then-23-year history, this was the first time they made an anime based on a girls' manga. Radical enough for Genre Adultery.
21. Trivia.Barbarian: For writer-director Zach Cregger himself. Originally a member of The Whitest Kids U' Know, his previous film effort (co-directed with the late Trevor Moore) was a very poorly received sex comedy, but his solo directorial debut is a critically praised horror venture. Close enough to Genre Adultery.
22. Creator.Illumination Entertainment (1):
    • The short film, Penglai, is a massive contrast to everything the studio has worked on prior, as it is a 2D animated film (a first from the studio) done in a traditional Chinese style and in contrast to their past films, which consist of lighthearted comedies, it is a dramatic adventure story with little humor. It is also the first short they have done that has no connection to their pre-existing films. Enough of a difference for Genre Adultery.
23. Trivia.Sarah Kane: Sarah's last two plays, Crave and 4.48 Psychosis, lack the violence of her previous plays. She even created a pen name when Crave premiered so that nobody would come to it with any expectations. 4.48 Psychosis is pretty weird even for Kane- there's no named characters or stage directions, so anyone wanting to perform it has to improvise. Enough of a difference for Genre Adultery.
24. Trivia.Santa And The Ice Cream Bunny: This is the only known fiction film directed by Richard Winer, whose career was otherwise spent as a documentary film-maker. Enough of a difference for Genre Adultery.
25. Music.Suicide Silence: The self-titled was a complete jump into nu metal; while they had had extremely overt nu metal elements for a while, they were still a deathcore act at the end of the day. The self-titled, on the other hand, had very few traces of their established style. They would return to deathcore with Become the Hunter, making this a Creator's Oddball. Enough of a difference for Genre Adultery.
26. Creator.Lars Mikkelsen: Surprisingly, he's done some Danish dub work for children's cartoons like Monsters vs. Aliens, and even Naruto. Presumably, it was So My Kids Can Watch. If an adult actor does children's VA work unexpectedly, I think it counts as Genre Adultery.
27. Creator.Greta Gerwig: Considering her previous auteurist drama directing efforts, Barbie comes off as quite an oddball. Radical enough for Genre Adultery.
28. Creator.Hanna Barbera (2): Most of their live-action TV movies (on which Barbera was always keener than Hanna). As the name Hanna-Barbera is often associated with Western Animation, it can be weird to learn they did in fact attempt to branch out to include live-action material, some with animation components and some with none at all. This came ahead in the 90s when the studio formed "Bedrock Productions" to produce live-action content for TV, such as The Dreamer of Oz and the infamous Poochinski pilot. An animated studio doing live-action stuff unusually counts IMO for Genre Adultery.
29. Bizarre Puzzle Game: Night Shift is a Puzzle Platformer where a blue-collar worker has to activate switches, operate conveyor belts and repair stuff inside a gigantic machinery that makes... action figures based on LucasArts games and Lucasfilm movies. It seems easy at first, but soon you'll have to deal with the whole production process, including quality control and shipping. Despite being published by LucasArts and featuring several of their characters in the form of toys, it has nothing to do with the rest of their output and was quickly forgotten. Radical enough for Genre Adultery.
30. Recap.Bob Chipman Film Reviews I To L: Isle of Dogs: It's a Wes Anderson movie both like any other (his Signature Style is so well suited to animation that Bob was surprised he had only done it once before, with Fantastic Mr. Fox) and unlike them (on paper, it seemed like it could have just as easily been another Ice Age movie), and it works well enough to earn three and a half stars. The set-up and its execution are very dark, mature, and clever for a family film, the Stop Motion makes everything looks terrific and realistic (in an Andersonian way), and several members of his usual Production Posse give great vocal performances as the dog protagonists. Most of the review, however, dealt with the stylistic choice of the heroes speaking American English and the villains un-subtitled Japanese; Bob thought it came just short of sliding into Unfortunate Implications, though he could see why other viewers might disagree.invoked Radical enough for Genre Adultery.
31. Trivia.Mr And Mrs Smith 1941: A screwball comedy directed by...Alfred Hitchcock? Radical enough for Genre Adultery.

1. TakeThat.Honest Trailers: The Honest Trailer for Luca has the narrator admit that the movie is quite an Creator's Oddball invoked for Pixar, being quite breezy and unfocussed, but nevertheless still better than the last five movies from DreamWorks Animation. Not a radical enough departure to be Genre Adultery.
2. YMMV.The Miskatonic: This is by far the least sexually graphic work by Jack Cayless. For a Lovecraft homage, that's appropriate. "Least" implies that the work is ultimately not different enough for Genre Adultery.
3. Trivia.Novi Stars: This is MGA Entertainment's fashion doll line that has a heavy focus on the dolls' individual gimmicks^note Such as Alie's light-up feature, Una's legs filled with glitter and water.. Their previous lines, Bratz and Moxie Girlz were released as traditional fashion dolls and later had lines with gimmicks. The "Orbit Beach" line is the only release under the brand that lacks these gimmicks. Not radical enough for Genre Adultery.
4. Trivia.Manga Time Kirara: While not without its fair share of Kirara hallmarks, The Demon Girl Next Door is a more dramatic and serialized story in comparison to the more light-hearted works Kirara is best known for. Doesn't seem to be radical enough for Genre Adultery.
5. Trivia.Time Warp Trio: For WGBH Boston, who co-produced the show, as this may be the only show, besides Peep and the Big Wide World, they produced that never aired on PBS (but it was once planned for the network initially, more on that down below), however it currently does air on PBS Kids in Africa and PBS currently has distribution rights to the series, so it’s possible it could appear on the US network sometime in the future. Not radical enough for Genre Adultery.
6. Trivia.Winning Time: For Adam McKay, who started his career doing straightforward comedies with Will Ferrell, then moved on to dark comedies rife with social commentary, most notably The Big Short. This series would fall into the latter, though the social commentary takes a backseat to a more conventional docudrama. Not radical enough for Genre Adultery.
7. Trivia.Death Battle: While not the most unusual episode DEATH BATTLE! has ever done, having made Justin Bieber VS Rebecca Black during its first season, the death battle between Sun Wukong and Heracles is the first death battle to feature opponents straight from real-world mythology, not from any novels, comics, movies, manga, or anime. Not radical enough for Genre Adultery.
8. Trivia.Allegras Window: The only puppetry-based show created by Jumbo Pictures, which normally does animation. I don't think this is a radical enough change for Genre Adultery.
9. Creator.Illumination Entertainment (3): The Super Mario Bros. Movie, while having comedic moments, is a straightforward adventure film whose comedy is less gag-based and has much more detailed animation than their other, more mid-budget films. Not enough of a change for Genre Adultery.
10. Trivia.Bolt Thrower: Honour - Valour - Pride. While its core sound is exactly what you'd expect, the presence of Dave Ingram from Benediction on vocal duties singlehandedly makes it stick out among their discography. This is mainly because he sounds completely different from Karl (as his signature Barney Greenway/Kam Lee-esque gruff bellow is a stark contrast to Karl's raspy growl which many declare synonymous with their sound). Not enough of a change for Genre Adultery.
11. Trivia.Monsters At Work: Of sorts. Pixar hasn't done any television series since Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, focusing entirely on movies, shorts, and the occasional special. This qualifies to an extent, combined with the fact that it's the company's first Interquel, having only made sequels and (in the case of this franchise) a prequel. Might not be this way for long, though, as Pixar is planning at least one other show, ''Win Or Lose''. Not enough of a change for Genre Adultery.
12. Creator.Hanna Barbera (1, 3, and 4):
    • The Tom and Jerry shorts, when compared to the output of H&B’s own studio. The former were lavishly animated and featured almost no dialogue, while the latter was the exact opposite. It’s sort of a shame to see what the duo was capable of when given the proper resources.
    • This is also the case with their more obscure adult-oriented productions. While everyone can remember types such as Funny Animal and You Meddling Kids cartoons from Hanna-Barbera, they've occasionally deviated from their target audience to produce cartoons like the serious drama Devlin and the primetime adult sketch comedy show Jokebook. These shows are so against what people associate with Hanna-Barbera that you can change a the course of an entire conversation just by mentioning them.
    • Their obscure live-action TV special The Last Halloween marked the first and only time Hanna-Barbera used CGI to animate their characters. They've experimented with the technology before, but primarily used it for visual effects like with the Funtastic World ride. These three are not radical enough for Genre Adultery.
13. Trivia.Cannibal Corpse: A Skeletal Domain is this in comparison to most of the Fisher-era releases. While most of their later releases have individual motifs to distinguish them, A Skeletal Domain has more unorthodox and quirky compositions when compared to their usual style (namely "A Murderer's Pact", which features a full-blown neoclassical shred lead from Pat), as well as a much cleaner and more modern production style. Much of this can likely be owed to the influence of Mark Lewis, who produced the album (as opposed to Erik Rutan). Fan opinion is generally divided, but it is generally considered to be one of their lesser releases, and the band themselves have said that it is too clean and polished for their liking, which led to their decision to go back to Rutan, and while "Kill or Become" has become a live staple and is one of the most famous Fisher-era songs, they have not played anything else from the album since its tour cycle concluded. Doesn't seem radical enough for Genre Adultery.
14. Trivia.Hercule Poirot Kenneth Branagh: Kenneth Branagh had never directed sequels prior to Death on the Nile. Doesn't seem radical enough for Genre Adultery.
15. Trivia.Sanrio: While Sanrio Animation's animated content between the late seventies and mid eighties was already Darker and Edgier compared to its merchandise featuring Sanrio Characters, their 1982 theatrical conclusion to the Space Runaway Ideon series, Be Invoked, is their darkest work alongside the 1978 adaptation of Takashi Yanase's children's story Ringing Bell (Chirin no Suzu), and the Unico film series ^note , and the 1979 animated pilot Unico: Black Cloud and White Feather to a lesser extent . Chirin no Suzu is very depressing and melancholy despite being aimed at children and families with some very dark content. Be Invoked on the other hand is a violent space opera that's clearly not aimed at kids, and ends with all of humanity being wiped out. If Sanrio was already doing depressing or dark works at the time, then this work is not radical enough for Genre Adultery.

1. Trivia.Project R: While the group was created to make the music for Super Sentai, that is not the only show that they have worked on. They are also credited on the Darker and Edgier Kamen Rider series, Kamen Rider Amazons. Yes, "Armour Zone" and "DIE SET DOWN" were written by Mike Sugiyama (one of the group's lyricists) and composed by NoB. Not enough context.

3. Creator.Illumination Entertainment (2): Hop is their only film that is a live-action/CGI hybrid, as that film's failure caused them to stay strictly to animation. Unclear—is an animation style change alone enough?
