Trivia / Sarah Kane

Go To

  • Creator Breakdown: Sarah's mental health was the subject of 4.48 Psychosis. One critic even referred to it as a '75-minute suicide note'.
  • Creator's Oddball: Sarah's last two plays, Crave and 4.48 Psychosis, lack the violence of her previous plays. She even created a pen name when Crave premiered so that nobody would come to it with any expectations. 4.48 Psychosis is pretty weird even for Kane- there's no named characters or stage directions, so anyone wanting to perform it has to improvise.
  • Missing Episode: Sarah wrote three one-woman plays prior to "Blasted" titled "Comic Monologue," "What She Said," and "Starved." However, her estate has prohibited anyone from performing or quoting from these works. They can, however, be accessed and read in a university archive.
    • It's worth noting that the author edited all of her plays until her passing, which means that the production of "Blasted" in 1995 may differ from the version that appears in the book.
    • Sarah was also against her plays being broadcasted on radio or television, believing that stage was the only place to leave a impression.
  • What Could Have Been: Sarah's initial aspiration was to become a poet. However, she eventually realized that her emotions and ideas couldn't be aptly expressed through poetry. Consequently, she decided to pursue a career in theatre instead.
    • Also we know that Sarah planned to write more than the works she did.
      • She was going to write a Tele-Play about anorexia but the producers ended the project at the first draft, she was going to write a piece for the RSC and an adaptation of Medea which never happened, and finally she was to write Viva Death, (working title) a third play that followed from Blasted and Cleansed, however she aborted it in favour of Crave.
