WildBrainTV is a Canadian cable channel and a spinoff of Family Channel that broadcasts live-action and animated programming aimed at kids and teenagers.
The channel was launched on June 1, 2011 by Astral Media (Family’s owners at the time) as the Canadian version of Disney XD, in accordance with Family’s ownership of the Canadian broadcasting rights to Disney Channel’s programming. Following Astral’s acquisition by Bell Media in 2013, ownership of the channel (along with Family and Family Jr., then the Canadian version of Disney Junior) shuffled over to DHX Media (now WildBrain) in 2014. However, the biggest change arrived in April 2015 when Corus Entertainment (owners of YTV, Teletoon, Nelvana, and many other major properties in Canadian television) acquired the Canadian broadcasting rights to all of Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and Disney XD's programming, and subsequently launched their own version of Disney XD. As a result, DHX Media rebranded their Disney XD under the Family Channel branding, becoming Family CHRGD (though it was more commonly marketed as just "CHRGD") in October 2015. In March 2022, it would rebrand again to its current name, WildBrainTV.
As a Canadian network, WildBrainTV is subject to Canadian Content laws, meaning a certain percentage of its daily programming must be produced in Canada. As a result, the channel has commissioned several original series, with their first original program being Nerd Corps Entertainment’s 2012 series Slugterra. They’ve also aired a few original movies, with the first one being Fresh TV’s horror comedy Bunks in 2013. While most of their Disney programming from their Disney XD days, such as Gravity Falls and Wander over Yonder, was lost to Corus, they did temporarily retain a few shows, like Randy Cunningham: Ninth Grade Ninja and Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero. However, cartoons from DreamWorks Animation like The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, Dinotrux, Voltron: Legendary Defender, and Dragons: Riders of Berk make up much of their American imported programming nowadays. They also air a number of European imports, like Zak Storm and Boy Girl Dog Cat Mouse Cheese. Canadian programming is largely made up of properties that WildBrain owns or distributes, such as Johnny Test (both the original series and the revival), Supernoobs, Inspector Gadget (2015), The Deep, Storm Hawks, and Fangbone!.
