The problem: Power Walk is a trope about a dramatic shot of a team or group shots of characters as they dramatically and determinedly walk, often towards the camera. Yet due to its simple and misleading name, it's often misused and used in regards to a single character, with the idea that they "look cool/badass as they walk", which are often examples that could go into other walking tropes like Menacing Stroll, The Slow Walk or Unflinching Walk. It also has a case of "this happens" Zero-Context Examples.

Possible solution: Renaming it to something that makes it clear it's about a walking group shot seems like the obvious solution, even something simple like Team Power Walk, Group Power Walk, but it's probably better to think up something catchier. Most of the misuse can be moved to other Walking Tropes or tropes like Mundane Made Awesome and Slow Motion.

  1. Main.Literal Music Video: Hot Rod has a montage of the events right before Rod's big jump, set to John Farnham's "You're The Voice." It culminates with Rod and the members of his crew coming together for a slo-mo Power Walk, only to be joined by a crowd of people who all start singing. 11. AwesomeMusic.Live Action TV: * The Criminal Minds opening theme is appropriately creepy, but you've got to give it to Patterson Hood's Heavy and Hanging, which plays over the final scenes of season five's "Hopeless". 16. Film.Horrible Bosses: * Power Walk: Parodied and discussed. The trio attempts a "super cool slow-mo walk", but they suck.
  17. Film.Odd Squad The Movie: * Batman Can Breathe in Space: Zig-zagged. When Olive, Otto, Olympia and Otis are doing a Power Walk towards the camera, they're holding helmets. However, Oscar interrupts the walk and tells them that they don't need helmets so long as they roll up the windows tight. From then on, they're shown going into space without helmets and can breathe fine.
  18. Funny.Legacies: * Hope, Josie, and Lizzie's awesome Power Walk out of the Old Mill after defeating the Archne is undermined by the fact they're covered head to toe in the monster's remains. The scene being played compeltely straight despite them walking aorund comvered in bug slime just adds to it.
  19. Funny.Crisis On Earth X: * After the Lock-and-Load Montage and Power Walk of the heroes, Iris and Felicity comfort each other over all the goings on. And then Mick walks in, complaining that STAR Labs doesn't have any mustard. When the girls question why Mick didn't join the rest of the heroes, he replies that he didn't even know they were going out.

Most notably, in the middle of "The Carnival Job", which has the team walking out of the smoke in slow-mo. And it is awesome. ** In a Hilarious Outtake version of "The Carnival Job", the Power Walk is turned into a Slow-Mo Power "Skip." It is both awesome and hilarious.

Misuse: Applied to a single character (30/77)

  1. Main.Brought Down To Badass: Heroes: He may have gotten the cool Power Walk scene in Volume 2, but Peter Petrelli certainly turned up the heat on his awesomeness during his S3 Brought Down to Normal phase, thinking situations through, teaming up with the Haitian to take down Arthur, basically being a much better, smarter person than his V2 persona. Luckily, he retained these qualities even after he regained powers, mainly because he was no longer a God-Mode Sue.
  2. Main.Delayed Causality: In Film.Iron Man Tony gets knocked out of the sky and lands in a crater. As he rises, a tank starts firing at him. Stepping aside from the missile, Tony aims a forearm-mounted rocket launcher and fires back. As the rocket hits the tank, Tony turns and starts to Power Walk away. Seconds later, the tank explodes.
  3. Main.Camera Tricks: In a documentary or news program, the narrator walks briskly towards the camera for no good reason to convey a sense of "dynamic energy" or some such rubbish. Often parodied by having the announcer hit his head on the camera. May also include instances where the reporter/narrator walks toward the camera, not briskly, but kind of slowly as if to impart a sense of intimacy. A newsman's Power Walk.
  4. Main.Trampled Underfoot: Anastasia: Rasputin steps over a drinking glass that a guest at the ball had dropped as he makes his evil Power Walk through the crowd. Given a nice Call-Back later at the end of the film, when Anastasia destroys his reliquary by stepping on it multiple times, dedicating the blows to her family, Dimitri, and to Rasputin himself—"Da svidanya!"
  5. Anime. The Dagger Of Kamui: * Ninja Run: All over the place, unsurprisingly. Bonus points for Jiro doing a Power Ninja Run against the sunset with a group of ninja mercenaries he hired.
  6. Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light: Power Walk: A single-character variant. Yugi and Kaiba do this on opposite ends of the room before the duel begins. Holograms of Duel Monsters add to the effect.
  7. Awesome.Agents Of SHIELD Season Five: ** And bonus points for the iconic "Crossing into Darkness", a variation of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. theme, playing throughout this entire scene alone, especially with Mike Peterson performing a Power Walk down the Quinjet's ramp along with a host of other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.
  8. Awesome.Fate Grand Order: ** King Hassan's animation emphasizes just how powerful he is especially when he weakened Gawain in Camelot for you, with stylish and visceral animations like he's from Dark Souls or Devil May Cry. His Noble Phantasm is merely a single, powerful slash... preceded by a Power Walk and a Death Glare. Truly worthy of his title as Grand Assassin.
  9. Awesome. The Batman 2022: ** Once again, Batman does his slow Power Walk. It is no less intimidating for the fact that Penguin can actually see him. If anything, as the page image shows, the imagery of Batman calmly approaching Penguin's completely wrecked car, lit up only by the flames behind him, is even more intimidating.
  10. Characters.Borderlands Eridians And Vault Monsters: * Power Walk: It makes its entrance coming from a portal, using Eridian pillars coming from the ground below it as stairs to walk to the ground.
  11. Characters.Goblin Slayer Goblin Slayer: * Power Walk: Even more than the commentary about how cruddy his armor is, the light novel narration is obsessed with repeating its description of the way Goblin Slayer walks; almost every time Goblin Slayer enters a scene, he is described as having a "bold, nonchalant stride" while nonetheless stooping and coiling his muscles in perpetual readiness to lunge. And he walks like this everywhere, even in town. More than once has he been mistaken for a street performer caricaturing an adventurer patrolling a dungeon, and even his friends internally laugh and admit he looks stupid doing it sometimes.
  12. Characters.Jack Septic Eye: * Power Walk: Purposely given a badass walk.
  13. Characters.Oddworld Butt-Monkey: If there's comedy to be had and it's not at the expense of his enemies, it's almost certainly the poor hero getting battered and bruised all around. Even when he tries to do a Power Walk after gaining his Semi-Divine power, he stumbles all over himself and ruins the moment.
  14. ComicBook.Wonder Woman Historia The Amazons: * Power Walk: How Hera, and the rest of the Goddesses, are introduced in the first scene in issue #1. Hera getting an entire splash page to herself doing this. The first shot might fit the trope, but the single one of Hera is a single character example misuse
  15. Creator.Jackie Chan: * Not So Stoic: He has said that while advertisements liked promoting him as "the man without fear", he assures that it is not the case. In the fall through the awnings from the clocktower, he wasn't able to let go of his own accord, and told the crew to keep the cameras rolling until he lost strength and could no longer hold on. When he was holding on to a helicopter while swinging over a train, it took him three days to work up the courage to do the stunt because news crews were there and the pressure was at an all time high (the stunt came about in part because Michelle Yeoh jumped a motorcycle on to the train and he didn't want to get shown up). When he did pull off the stunt, he did a one-man Power Walk for the cameras and Hilarious Outtakes.
  16. Live-Action Films Guardians of the Galaxy: *** The film packs a whole bunch into the first few minutes after the flashback. We have Ronan ranting about how he will "rain Kree justice" upon his enemies, showing his zealotry, followed by crushing the skull of a captured Nova Corpsman with his hammer. Shortly afterward, we have Rocket snarking at the people of Xandar and their stupid haircuts, showing off his antisocial attitude, then he berates Groot for drinking fountain water, showing his care for Groot and Groot's own Gentle Giant nature. Of course, this all pales in comparison to Star-Lord, who gets two. First, we learn he cares so deeply that he'd tries to stop other boys from torturing a frog, and can't bring himself to accept that his mother is dying, running away. When he's grown up, after a lengthy Power Walk through rainy, deserted ruins, finally gets indoors; takes off his helmet, puts on a Walkman, and starts dancing to "Come and Get Your Love", as well as kicking and throwing small animals around, firmly establishing him as a Bunny-Ears Lawyer and rather crueler than the boy we were told about before—showing what his life as a galactic outlaw has done to the sweet kid. This is also qualifies as an establishing moment for the series itself.
  17. Film.Escape From New York: * Good Smoking, Evil Smoking: Snake smokes through the movie, and actually got the final shot with a Power Walk and a cigarette.
  18. Film.Scorpio Rising: * Power Walk: The young man, having finished dressing up in all his biker gear, walks down a street in a very self-assured manner. This is juxtaposed with clips from some old Christian movie of Jesus power-walking his way down a dusty road with his disciples.
  19. Film. The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou: * Power Walk: In the closing scene, the whole crew walks side by side to get back to the boat.
  20. Film.Twenty One Jump Street: * Power Walk: Schmidt, Jenko, and the nerds do it at prom. It doesn't look cool, though, since Schmidt and Jenko are the only ones with decent tuxedos.
  21. Funny. One Piece New World Era: ** Doflamingo saving Law and Baby 5 from a vicious pirate? Kind of sweet. A tearful Baby 5 clinging to his leg as he tries to do a Power Walk with his brother setting himself on fire (again) in the background? Hilarious.
  22. Manga.Death Note: * Power Walk: ** One each in the second intro and outro. ** Also Light does one with the Taskforce in the finale (looking like The Sopranos in their business suits). First entry is ZCE, second is single character example misuse
  23. Literature. How To Survive A Horror Movie: * Implacable Man: One of the five types of Slasher Movie killers, the book calling them the Strong, Silent Type (SST). They're huge, they feel no pain, they can Power Walk faster than you can run, and they like bladed weapons. Unfortunately, their single-mindedness makes them easy to lure into traps.
  24. Manga.Yamada Kun And The Seven Witches: * Power Walk: When the student council walks through the school halls to confront the Japanese chess club.
  25. MundaneMadeAwesome.Live Action TV: * Spaced at many, many points, including Brian taking Marsha's coat, and heroically power walking it into the bedroom with stirring, heroic music from The Magnificent Seven.
  26. Altered Carbon S 02 E 04 Shadow Of A Doubt: * Power Walk: The final scene goes into slow motion when Evil Kovacs walks into view.
  27. Recap.Brooklyn Nine Nine S 5 E 09 Nine Nine: * Answer Cut: ** Terry asks where they're going to get fresh clothes after their luggage blew up in the RV. Cut to the Nine-Nine doing a Power Walk while wearing the Boyles' trademark beige and khaki.
  28. Series.Kamen Rider OOO: ** Date arriving just when OOO and Ankh were about to be defeated by the two Beetle Yummies in #17. His entry is even more dramatic due to him doing a solo Power Walk and then finally revealing his transformation sequence.
  29. Webcomic.Erfworld: * Power Walk: Parson, suited up for battle in Book 2. Even makes that goofy demon hamster helm look badass.
  30. Wrestling.Vince Mc Mahon: * Power Walk: Fans sitting in ringside seats will often bow down and "worship" him as he walks by them on his way to the ring. Has grown into more of a Silly Walk with the passage of time.** According to Jim Cornette, this is actually how he walks in real life. He exaggerates and plays it up on camera, of course, but he does apparently have that strut in his personal life, and supposedly part of why he incorporates it into his character & exaggerates it so much is because he gets playfully mocked for it among his own inner circle.

  26. TopGearUK.Tropes H To Q: * Power Walk: Sort of. If the three presenters are driving three cars, there will inevitably be at least one wide shot of the three in a flying-wedge formation.
  27. Final Fantasy XV: * Power Walk: An early promotional image of Noctis and his friends walking away from a smoking building. ** The promotional image from E3 2013 has the gang still walking purposefully, but with their finalized designs this time around.
  28. VideoGame.Midnight Suns: * Power Walk: Most missions start and end with a slow-mo shot of your team walking across the Abbey grounds.

Sincere q: Why not expand to allow single characters? The tropes listed in the OP are more specific than "dramatic, slightly slowmo walk to look cool" (Menacing Stroll is for athletic, intimidating badasses, The Slow Walk is for when they're facing down a villain, Unflinching Walk involves explosions)

I think a single person doing the slow-mo-boss-walk (e.g. the image on Make Way for the Princess) has the same connotations.

[up] I didn't consider expanding because I felt that as it is written the core of the trope is the team aspect.

That and most of the solo examples either fell into other walking tropes or were ZCE of the "x does this" or "x does a Power Walk" nature.

I do think the "slow-mo walk looks cool" idea can be tropeworthy, but I feel it would be better as its own separate trope.

Rename. I'd rather save the "single-man cool slow-mo walk" examples somewhere and argue to yard or expand The Slow Walk for them at a new thread.

Calling in favor of renaming without expanding the definition.

What are our options other than Team Power Walk and Group Power Walk?

I ended up improvising since I didn't get an answer. I figured the existing suggestions would be fine, and a lot of what I added replace "power" with "determined" or "dramatic", so some of them weren't changed much.

OK, the page has been moved, so it's time to clean up both on-page examples and wicks. If the description needs any tweaks, go ahead and make them.

Took care of the on-page examples, as far as I know. There were a buttload of ZCEs (mainly ones with Word Cruft that says "does this" without saying what "this" refers to) and a handful of single-person examples, the latter of which I removed since we didn't expand the trope to include them, so a lot had to go.
