Original post:

Note: This thread was proposed by MacronNotes and covers Dark Skinned Blond in addition to Dark Skinned Redhead.

Here's the Trope Talk thread I started a couple of months ago when I was trying to narrow down the scope of both tropes.

Dark Skinned Blond and Dark Skinned Redhead have personality traits and other things associated with them but most people see nothing but the phenotype. I was hard pressed to find anything regarding the listed personality types for both descriptions. The few examples with context seemed more like Ambiguously Brown than anything.

Here's the wick checks for I did for each trope: Sandbox.Dark Skinned Blond Wick Check and Sandbox.Dark Skinned Redhead Wick Check wick checks. Interestingly, I got almost identical ratios for both tropes.

DSB

  • Dark-skinned Blonde: 27 wicks ~~~54%
  • DSB + additional context: 3 wicks~~~6%
  • ZCE: 20 wicks~~~40%

DSR

  • Dark-skinned Redhead: 27 wicks ~~~53%
  • DSR + additional context: 3 wicks~~~6%
  • ZCE: 21 wicks~~~41%

My solution

I think turning both tropes into disambigs + yarding whatever isn't covered by existing tropes is the best course action here.

Paging ~MacronNotes to the thread.

Anyway, disambiguating sounds good.

I don't really like the disambigs, since they're nearly identical lists. Maybe just redirect both to Ambiguously Brown, since a dark-skinned blond/redhead doesn't really correspond to any common phenotype that people know of anyway?

I mean I don't have an issue with it but since the last time I proposed that with Tights Under Shorts and Skirt Over Slacks and people voted against it.

As for the Ambiguously Brown redirect idea, I still prefer disambiguating. Plenty of examples for DSB and DSR have defined ethnicities.

[up][up] I actually knew a girl growing up who was black with naturally red hair. Genetics are a trip.

In this case, I also prefer the redirect to Ambiguously Brown over disambig (both of these seem like they were created with anime/manga in mind and that's typically what these characters are in that context), but either option is fine

[up][up]But either way, it won't be a trope anymore, so does it matter? The examples will be gone regardless.

[up]Which is why I said that it's not a "common phenotype that people know of" rather than "not a phenotype that exists IRL". tongue

Eh, I prefer not link non tropes to actual tropes because I think it encourages misuse and I don't want people to move wicks to Dark Skinned Redhead and Dark Skinned Blonde where it doesn't apply. I won't fight it if people want to redirect it.

Well, I was already planning to have the crowner set up like the one for Tights Under Shorts and Skirt Over Slacks when we get around to that part (one option for disambiguating both, two options for disambiguating one and turning the other into a redirect with the two being in opposite directions, and, in this thread's case, options for redirecting, which wasn't present with Tights Under Shorts and Skirt Over Slacks)

Edit: Actually, maybe four additional options for disambiguating one and turning the other into a redirect, but with the redirects' targets being either Ambiguously Brown or Phenotype Stereotype instead of the disambiguation page, plus one option for redirecting both to Ambiguously Brown and another for redirecting both to Phenotype Stereotype. Of course, I didn't get much sleep, so we have plenty of time to fix any oversights. I'm really only spitballing now to prevent the sort of mistakes made with Black Sheep's thread.

Refining my opinion on the Trope Talk thread: Both are using rare skin/hair combinations to create a striking look. That is definitely a creative decision, especially when they put wigs on performers of color, but not one necessarily done with narrative intent other than “looks cool” (I cited Rihanna as someone who favored this look).

House of the Dragon made the brown skin and white hair combination intentional (since the family was racelifted to black and the actors were wearing white wigs) AND plot relevant (it’s part of a Chocolate Baby plotline), which is more than most examples can say: but the same universe has done similar things with other non-Dark Skinned Blond phenotypes. So ultimately, it's still "looks cool".

I’ll agree with a disambiguation for both.

[up]That might be worth Yarding since the current state of "this character has a combination of this hair color and this skin color" can't be used for it because the current examples don't give a reason for why the combinations were chosen (such as if it was due to Rule of Cool, etc.).

I'm kind of reminded of how both Heroic Albino and Evil Albino were just "this character has white hair and red eyes plus a specific moral alignment" and were redirected to Albinos Are Freaks after it was launched to cover cases of discrimination against actual albinos instead of just being about any character with a specific hair color and eye color.

Of course, not having similar disambigs would be better, but I can't come up with the order.

The examples don't say if the hair color is genetic, artificial, or even implausible within the setting (eg. Game of Thrones/House of the Dragon runs on People of Hair Color rules, not real life genetic rules. Ariel on The Little Mermaid (2023) is a mermaid.). It's a good disambig target though.

[up]I agree. The examples that simply mention the hair color without the reason for it are in the same boat as the examples that got You Gotta Have Blue Hair deprecated (which didn't distinguish between characters naturally having hair colors that are impossible in real life or characters who simply dyed their hair).
